A Very Winchester Mystery

A special little ficlet for @ain-t-bovvered‘s 800 follower “Tales of the Winchesters” project! I visited the Winchester Mystery House a couple years back and couldn’t resist. Even tossed in a little personal easter egg from my time there because it was too good and I swear the ghosts played a little prank on me. Also, I’m sure the WIL CFO is perfectly decent person, but I needed someone to commit the crime :P

We know who the Winchesters are. We're not talking the originals, of course, though I suppose it's not out of the realm of possibility for them to be related. We are ghosts, after all, so the realm of possibility is quite large. We mean the new Winchesters. The brothers. The ghost slayers.

You see, the thing about this place that we inhabit is that it's very popular. Everyone comes here. Demons, ghouls, vampires, werewolves. They enjoy a little bit of whimsy as much as the next fellow. Some people even drag their own personal ghosts with them, pulled along by their attachment to some piece of jewelry or other. Those times are when we get the good gossip.

The Winchesters almost got me last week, but I got away because my daughter here was catching a flight for this vacation she's on. I guess that Dean boy doesn't do planes.

Sam and Dean smoked my aunt's bones a few year's back when she was haunting me. Now I'm a ghost, too. Irony, amiright?

'Pretty sure I'm half way to angry spirit, and I'm afraid the Winchesters are gonna nab me before my boy stands at the alter in a couple months. You guys have any tips on how to stay on the good path?' 'Sure Fred, find some good friends if you can. We have poker nights once a week to vent. Congratulations on the engagement!'

And that, my good listener, is why we are a little bit worried. To give you some background, the Winchester Mystery House is a big thing. People spend real money to come walk through Sarah's wacky rooms and miniature stairwells. Personally, at this point in our ghostly existences, we don't totally understand the appeal, but the point still stands that people are here constantly. They're always with a tour guide, but every now and again, people get away from the group and we have to set them straight. Nicely of course. We weren't lying when we told Fred to find some friends. Being together all these years has really helped us stay on the straight and narrow.

What you have to understand is that we all want to be here, and not for revenge. Absolutely none of us were trapped here and if we really wanted to, we could probably find a way to get a reaper to come take us up, though none of us knows how. Sarah Winchester was the most excellent of ladies. During our lives, she took care of us and our families well and we are simply repaying the favor in death. We keep the property safe, defending it from harm, and keeping the still hidden rooms clean until the property managers finally find them. Occasionally we play a little mischief on tourists who get off the beaten track, like that time some sisters missed a sign and found their ways into a private area and we shut the gate on them. They got out fine, but they knew what happened, and stayed on the path after that.

Anyway, it all started a few weeks ago when apparently somebody in the higher-ups of Winchester Investment LLC decided to get greedy. We don't really understand how that whole situation works because we only know what we hear or see in the newspaper, but we know enough. WIL is in charge of this whole operation and they run it for the descendants of John and Mayme Brown, the couple who bought the house after Sarah died, may she rest in peace. One night, someone tried setting the estate on fire. Nothing of this scale had ever occurred before and we may have lost our cool, just a bit. It happened again a week later. Needless to say, the Winchesters and their angel friend Castiel were all here now, and we were going to have to try really hard to get them to see what was happening here before they found a way to burn us all.

As it happened though, the Winchesters were surprisingly willing to listen to reason. It might be because we steered them into a room with only two doors, one of which lead to a 15 foot drop off and the other of which we blocked off with 20 or so ghosts strong, but you know, technicalities. They listened.

"Cas, what just happened?" Dean asked.

Oh my goodness, he was gorgeous! Those eyes. Mabel would definitely want to see him. She hadn't seen a cute tourist in weeks.

"Obviously the ghosts are preparing to kill us, Dean. I didn't think that would require an explanation."

The angel was a funny one. We've heard tell of them coming down to earth, but none have come to the house. They must think they're above fun, but we all knew this one is a little different.

"Yeah, yeah Cas. Thanks for the pep talk. I mean, how many of them are there. You can see them, right?"

"Ah, of course. There are currently 19 of them in the room. I believe there are a few more outside the door, but I don't have x-ray vision so you'll have to bear with me."

We really could have appeared to them then, but it was far too good a show to end it straight away. The tall one, Sam, looked like he'd swallowed a whole lemon while he looked between his brother and the angel. Castiel and Dean were so focused on talking about us that it was entirely impossible they'd forgotten about us. Watching them waffle and bicker before us in their FBI suits, it was hard to believe the vast quantity of stories we'd heard all the years before.

"Alright, well what are we going to do about it?" Sam finally asks practically. "We can't go shooting salt rounds inside a century old work of art and we don't have enough salt for that many ghosts at once."

At this point, we were seriously confused about how they'd acquired the reputation they had. That said, the threat of shots being fired at dear Sarah's carefully chosen wallpaper was enough to make a few of us show ourselves. When our best diplomats, Mr. Jones, Margaret, and John, materialized before them, their reactions (or lack thereof) were disappointing though not surprising. After all, with decades of ghost hunts under their belts, nothing should really shock them anymore.

"I would strongly recommend that you do not fire inside our home." Margaret spoke first, in her best friendly intimidation voice. She practiced it daily in front of Sarah's looking glass.

Despite her warning, Dean raised his gun anyway. Effie giggled invisibly at the glorious eye rolling his actions earned him from both Castiel and Sam. The older Winchester swung his gun in her direction. Admittedly, it was fairly impressive how good his aim was from sound alone. Had he fired, he would have hit her squarely in the head.

"God, Dean, what did she just say?" Sam was definitely the reasonable one of the two.

"Yeah, yeah. I heard her. Ghosts say lots of crap, though. Just being on the safe side."

"We will definitely not be allowed back inside if we damage this home, Dean. Even if they do think we're FBI."

"Ugh, fine." Dean lowered his weapon as Castiel placed a firm hand on his shoulder. "What are we supposed to do then?"

"Listen to us, you goon." Mr. Jones spoke then, finally seeing his in. He was a gruff older man, his skin tanned despite his deathly pallor from hours in the sun picking fruit in Mrs. Winchester's orchards. He had died very suddenly one day when a branch had snapped and his ladder had fallen with him at the top.

"We're listening." Sam said quickly before Dean could speak again.

"We're good spirits. None of us are vengeful. We chose to stay here after our deaths, even after Mrs. Winchester passed, in order to protect her property. This place was a good home to many of us and she cared for our families like her own. We just help maintain the property and keep the visitors safe."

"Then why the recent deaths?" Castiel asked.

"Someone is sending people to try and burn the estate to the ground. We believe it must be someone at the organization trying to collect insurance money or something." John spoke now. "One of our younger ghosts, Elmer, lost his temper the first time. The second time, it was Charlie. We aren't vengeful spirits, but protecting this place is our purpose and someone is trying to destroy it."

"You can see we're very much in possession of our faculties, even after almost a century. More for some. But this home must be protected. If it is lost, we truly will go insane." Margaret had dropped her ominous tone in favor of something friendlier.

"Won't you disappear?" Dean asked. "Isn't it the house that you're attached to?"

"No. We are connected to the entire estate, down into the soil that we tended and farmed. We cannot be burned with this house, but if the house burns we will have nothing grounding us to our purpose and then we truly will become vengeful."

"We can't have you killing people, even if they are arsonists." Castiel answered.

"Then help us!" Effie appeared suddenly. She had always gotten impatient with too much talk. "We can't have this house destroyed and you can't have us killing more people. You must be able to do something."

And they could.

With our help concealing the security cameras and silencing the alarms, they snuck back onto the property after hours. We used Castiel as a communication conduit and when we found yet another man entering the property with gasoline and matches we alerted him and they called in an anonymous tip that someone was attempting to burn the estate. Rather than kill the man, we detained him until the authorities arrived and took him away.

A week later, the CFO of WIL was brought in for questioning and one of the Mayme descendants themselves took his position. Every once in a while, when the world isn't ending, the Winchesters take a day or two to come visit us. Castiel always brings the best gossip.

Control Ch. 7

You didn’t want to run, but your feet weren’t listening to your brain. All you could see was a blur of white and light blue while you advanced through the cold and noisy hallways of the hospital. It probably wasn’t that cold and noisy, but that’s all you could feel.

Then, you stopped. Why were you running? Why were you so desperate and eager to get to the front of that room? What would you say? “I came as soon as I heard. What happened?” it was true, you actually did, but you weren’t alone, Seven was with you. And less than 50 minutes had passed ever since you two were on your bed after… no, it’s not the time to think about this.

“I don’t think we should get there together.” you stop and hold his arm lightly.

“Are you sure?” he asks, adjusting his glasses. Ugh… did you break the frame when you punched him? Shit…

“I… I am not.” You admit, crossing your arms. “What do you think?”

“That I’m looking at your forehead and there is no ‘I’ve just had sex’ sign written on it, so I don’t really know why you are so worried.” You chuckle, regretting immediately for laughing at a time like this. “What about on mine?” he leans towards you, and though you know you should, you don’t back away.

“Hum… not seeing one.”

“Oh, really? Too bad, I would like to have one to make Zen and Yoosung jealous, but it is what it is…” why are you laughing? Why did you stop running? “But hey, if you want me to turn around and come back in five minutes, I won’t mind.”

“No, it’s fine.” It is, indeed. You know what wouldn’t be fine? Drag Seven to your messed up world when you feel guilty and lying all the time.

“Okay, so let’s go.”

You know the reason that brought you here didn’t change, the situation is still bad, but… the small talk with Seven made you feel lighter, somehow. Even though he is acting different from what you remember, there is still a goofy side you didn’t know it would be useful to calm you down.

He didn’t ask any questions when you decided to rush to the hospital, he told you the entire ride here to stay calm, since there was no sure of what happened yet. And now… he’s walking beside you, close enough like a friend, far enough like a bodyguard.

If an outsider looks at this, they would never guess what kind of relationship you two have. Can he guess? If he can, will he tell you? If he won’t, will you insist on figuring out? It was just sex, it was just a punch. He is smart, flirty, bright. You were angry, horny, confused… but it was just sex… wasn’t it?

No, not the time to think about this. You can’t depend on him to calm you down again. Calm… yes, you need to stay calm when you face… Jumin.

Jumin sees you standing in the end of the hallway. Your eyes lock with his, he wonders if you two share the same facial expression right now. No, his eyes aren’t that widen, his chin isn’t shaking, and his lips aren’t curled. He’s not about to cry like you are.

The expression in your face… he’d seen more than he would like, to be completely honest. He saw it that day at his office, he saw it when you were reading that book and the character you liked was murdered, he saw it when Glam and Sarah lodged an appeal and almost managed to get away with what they did, and he saw it when he called you a whore.

“What have you said to offend her?”

“She slapped me and you’re asking me what I have done wrong?”

“Oh, I doubt it was that hard, she is such a weak little thing. And besides, I know you more than I know her, son. You definitely said something hurtful to her.”

“Yes, you really don’t know her, father.” Neither did Jumin.

He was visiting his father the second weekend on a roll now. They would see each other on the company every day, but most talks were strictly professional. Jumin wouldn’t come so often to his father’s house ever since he got engaged, weekends were filled with trips to vineyards, cherry farms and golf courses, where he was teaching you the sport. The last golfing lesson was three weekends ago, one day before the break up. And now, Jumin wasn’t interested in golf for his own entertainment, it became a social requirement for business once again.

No golf, no vineyards, no cherry farms, just a lot of ideas for cat projects and silent lunches with his father during the weekend. Bu this one wasn’t being silent, though it wasn’t being less awkward. It was the first time Jumin told more details about the night you were gone.

Why did he decide to tell his father? He didn’t, it just slipped when Mr. Chairman was talking about his next business trip. “The shares of this pharmaceutical company have grown exponentially, it’s impressive for a country going through an economical crisis, don’t you think?” “MC slapped me before going, I found the engagement ring on the nightstand a few hours later.”

Chairman widened his eyes for a second and his son noticed how he held his breath for a second, then his expressions looked serene again and the questions started. The first one, though, surprised even Jumin.

“Did you tell Jihyun too?” no, he didn’t. Even though V was way more reachable than before, he was still a little distant. And Jumin didn’t know how to explain this, but he felt it wasn’t right to talk to V about it, his friend was still grieving Rika’s death, he probably would never stop, should he really shower V with the spot of negativity and anger that stained the break up with you?

Also, what Jumin really wanted was somebody to be on his side. His father was dealing with liar and cheater women not so long ago, if someone would understand his pain, it would be his father. For the first time, Chairman would be able to understand his son’s intricate thoughts. O Or at least, that what was Jumin thought.

“She seems like a sensible young lady who would never go to the extremes of hurting someone physically unless she got provoked.”

“I wasn’t provoking her, I was making her tell me the truth.”

“And what would be that truth?”

“It… it doesn’t matter anymore.”

“It does if you come to my house two weekends in a roll and look so tormented, son. I understand if you don’t want to tell me what happened, since this is between the two of you, but… but don’t lie to yourself that it doesn’t matter. I… have learned recently that lying and pretending that something doesn’t affect you will bring nothing but more pain.”

That was unexpected, this coming from the man that basically taught Jumin to never allow the vulnerability to come in? The Glam and Sarah ordeal definitely let a mark, huh?

“MC… lied to me, father. Like those women.”

“Was she after your money?”

“I guess not.” Much on the contraire, since you refused vehemently to his offerings of paying for your studies. Come to think of it… you weren’t after anything material, were you? “But she lied, doesn’t matter how you look at it, she lied.”

“Did she ever consider telling you the truth?” You told him you did.

“Maybe.”

“I see.” Chairman places the fork on the plate and takes a sip of the wine, looking down for a moment. “Love is about restraints, isn’t it?”

“Pardon?”

“Love.” He takes another sip. “It makes you hold back. You don’t want people to see certain sides of you, and though it sounds selfish, I tend to think it’s an altruistic feeling, you know? Not wanting the one you love see something they wouldn’t like about you. In the end, is about protecting their feelings, and your own, somehow. It’s almost like… an instinct, if you think about it.”

An instinct… Jumin knew how instincts were opposed to rationality. And he wasn’t being rational during those three days, so it was instinct? You weren’t being rational when you lied, it was instinct? He was trying to protect you, in a very distorted way, but he was.

Were you trying to protect him on your own distorted way as well? In the end, were you two more alike than he thought? No. It couldn’t be. His father was confused, the Glam and Sarah ordeal was still twisting with his mind. Or was the age affecting his judgement?

“I disagree, love isn’t about restraints.”

There were problems with this relationship between Jumin and you, restraints weren’t any close to being one of them. If they were, you would still probably be together. And despite what his father believes, it really didn’t matter anymore.

After this lunch, Jumin’s visits to his father went back to their normal recurrence. He didn’t need to deal with lectures and these attempts of deep reflections on love. His father was getting softer, it wouldn’t take long for him to get needy and look for another empty woman that would fill his desires for a while. Hopefully, this one wouldn’t have a sister disguised as a student trying to get married with his son.

And now there is space for regret. Maybe Jumin shoudn’t have stopped his visits, they weren’t good for himself, but maybe were for his father. Love is about restraints, it is about not showing his frustration and anger for his father not to feel lonely. And since today is Saturday, he would probably be with Chairman when he had a heart attack.

But he wasn’t, all he got was a call from their doctor. Chairman Han was hospitalized.

Jumin was already in the hospital when he called all the RFA members, and though it wasn’t time to think about this, he was surprised how he didn’t even hesitate to call you first.

“My father is in the ICU, MC.”

“Wait, really?”

“Yes. He had a heart attack, he is unconscious now, the doctor is still examining him.”

“Jumin, I… Stay calm.”

“I am calm.”

“I know you are. I… I’m coming.” And you hung up, probably thinking he would say you didn’t have to if you didn’t want to, but… if he said that, it would be a lie.

Because in the minute he saw you in the end of the hallway, Jumin knew he wasn’t calm.

Then you walked in his direction and hugged him.

“He’ll be fine, and you’ll be fine. Everything will be fine.”

It would, because you were here. And he was calm.

Drag me to the angst cliff and push me down, somebody help Jumin Han because I’m putting him through HELL!

Tone-wise, anything from fluff to darkfic is welcome. I have a soft spot for stories that juxtapose content and tone, or that are very different in tone to their source material!

Backstory or worldbuilding: I love stories about how familiar people or places came to be that way. Anything from distant past to five minutes before the story starts is absolutely welcome

Far future: I also love stories about characters many years later, or about the ways they’ve changed their world. I particularly enjoy stories about characters stepping into the roles of their mentors or being deeply changed by the power they wield.

The Arcadia Project, Mishell Baker

Where to find it: The Arcadia Project is a three-book series of new adult-ish urban fantasy novels (Borderline, Phantom Pains, and Imposter Syndrome).

If you’re looking for a fifteen-minute fandom, I’d like to formally invite you to read the preview available on goodreads, then write me a fic based on whatever you think the rest of the book might shake out to be. I suspect whatever you come up with will be interesting and possibly hilarious and it would definitely be an awesome gift to receive (tw for preview: suicidal ideation and discussion of suicide, psychiatric institutionalization, sexual assault mentioned briefly)

Likes: I initially came to the Arcadia Project for its depiction of mental illness. I fell in love with the characters, but I would very much be open to an OC-heavy story set in the same universe. I love how willing Baker is to make all of her characters abrasive, and how characters struggle on-screen with being better and kinder and healthier people and don’t always succeed.

Damar, Robin McKinley

Likes: Damar is a super nostalgic canon for me—I read the books for the first time in middle school and a lot of the way I come to these books is like super informed by that. If you give me the tropeyest trope that ever trooped I will love it :D I love the richness of detail in these books, and the way the world feels lived in—there are lots of details that allude to history we don’t see on screen. I’d love to see your take on that backstory and worldbuilding, if that’s something you’re interested in!

Prompts:

There is a vanishingly small possibility that you, writer, are interested in writing a story about orange merchants in Daria. If so, yes? Very yes?

Harry and Aerin interaction, on as epic or not-epic scale as you want. Like, visions? Both summoned through time to fight a massive threat? Going out for coffee together?

Harry/Aerin! I have no idea how you’d make it work but yay fantasy femslash. This is probably a good candidate for an out-there au if you’re feeling that :D

Earthsea, Ursula K. LeGuin

Requested Character: Tenar!

Likes: I love how grounded Earthsea is. It tells stories about people, first and foremost. The magic system is epic, and there are so many stories that could be told in this world! As stated above, I’m only up to date as far as Tehanu. I’m fine with spoilers, but I might be totally lost if what you want to write relies on further books.

Tenar (& or /) Ged being domestic!

Ged having to learn how to do farm things over again without magic, and Tenar teaching him

Just… spending time together. Cooking or working or talking or just sharing each other’s warmth.

The aftermath of the end of Tehanu—being controlled like that must be horrible and I doubt they left unscarred. How does that affect them and Tehanu down the line?

AU where Tenar stays as Arha in Atuan. How this works out is up to you :D

Tehanu being a kid or Tehanu being a dragon or, of course, Tehanu being both a kid and a dragon. Cue hijinks.

younger!Tenar in her first few years in Earthsea! What was it like, adjusting? Living in the city?

are there any habits she picked up in the Tombs that are hard to break, or that she’s kept for her entire life?

What’s her reaction to big crowds? Attention? Not having the time and space alone that she’s used to?

Where does Tenar have unexpected gaps in her knowledge? Like, does she know how to cook for one, or only for a whole temple? does learning how to navigate new places while seeing them make it harder?

Tell me more about women’s magic. Could a woman, given motivation, become a wizard? How does this dichotomy interact with a more complex or modern understanding of gender identity?

Emelan, Tamora Pierce

Likes: Wow, real elementary school hours here. I first read the Circle of Magic books when 10 felt really old. The concept of ambient magic is awesome and I love how big and intricate the world always feels. I’d love to see our characters continue to grow and teach, or to see more of the world around the Pebbled Sea or beyond!

Main four

Future fic! What are they doing five years post-Will of the Empress. 10? 50? How have their powers developed?

On the dark side, I’d love to see someone seriously try to get Tris and/or Briar to do war magic for them. Is it possible, with any amount of force or magic, to trap one of the discipline crew at this point? How else might they be compelled or encouraged to do what someone else wants?

Life at Discipline sometime during those four years. Lessons? Adventures? “Ugh Little Bear peed on the floor again, Briar it’s your turn to clean it up!”? I want to see what takes up their time when no one’s life is threatened.

Letters! Epistolary fic! Show me what they thought was important to share with each other while they were out in the world, and what they decided not to tell.

Teachers

Backstory! We know a little bit about what each of their teachers’ lives were like before, but I want to see more. Show me what a day in the life of dancer!Lark or farm girl!Rosethorn was like.

i did a quote online at progressive just to get an idea of how much the insurance would be for a 2005 yzf r6. i am 18 years old had my motorcycles license for 2 years and have been riding smaller bikes for 2 years now the r6 i am looking at costs 6000 with very low miles and an aftermarket exhaust from a dealer and i will be making a 2200 trade in which will go towards the bike but the rest will have to be financed. i heard the online quote is wrong because i didn't use my social security number and is different from the real quote i should get. also the loan will most likely be under my parents name and if u know of what type of coverage i will need since it is financed ive been doing alot of studying but thought id ask on here. i live in wisconsin which isn't a very populated area which should also make a difference if u know anything or need to know anymore just ask thanks alot

Im currently insured with Geico. I got my plan back last year when i had a beater car (2001 nissan maxima). My premium was only 260 or so for the whole year, whiche came out to 40 bucks or so a month. ive since bought a new car (2013 nissan versa) and switched it with my old car. my monthly payment only went up 4 or 5 bucks as a result. This rate is fricking great and i have no problems. however, when i go to refinance (for lack of a better word) my insurance or simply shop around, for some reason the quotes they give me skyrockets my payments to 260+ a month!! the same is for other insurance providers aswell, even the insurance offered by my bank! what gives? why the huge leap? i have a clean record (no accidents ever, last speeding ticket was 4+ years ago), what was at the time, a brand new car, aswell as a better job (was working in a restaurant, now at a lawfirm). Sure, ive moved since i first got the policy, into a poorer neighboor hood, but does it really warrant a 200 dollar increase? Someone please help me wrap my head around this. im 21 and am still pretty clueless when it comes to this sort of thing""
