Look. Even if you don’t like the horror in crimson peak, you have to admit the movie looks great and the costumes are fabulous. That moth vs butterfly symbolism?? Amazing.

It would be nice to read a Superman comic that’s more Clark than Kal.
It would be nice to read a Batman comic where Bruce does more good as himself for the issues than as Batman.
It would be nice to see Diana in one of her many jobs like a museum curator bringing beautiful pieces of history to light for people to marvel at or as a diplomat.
It would be nice to see Barry solving crimes with his forensic science without bolting off between every discovery to handle things as Flash.
It would be wonderful to read a story about these awesome heroes that was focused on what good their other identities do, with their heroic personas as background instead of the other way around. I hardly hear of stories that last more than a few issues or an arch that gives us a nice long look into their civilian lives, if anyone knows any longer arcs like this I’d love to read them.

Crimson Peak (2015), costumes designed by Kate Hawley Poor Things (2023), costumes designed by Holly Waddington
"The house really dictated how to approach the costumes, from a sculptural point of view, to give them extra depth, to give them a painterly quality. I didn’t want to get myself caught up in detail that didn’t feel like it meant anything, like generic lace or decoration. So all the details we made and they all came from the symbolism of the characters or the house itself. The leaves on Lucille’s dress were constructed by hand, with a single piece of cording. And for Edith, the motifs of the flowers, she blooms. It was about trying to create an atmosphere. [...] [Edith's] like a chrysalis at that point. She’s very fragile, so the butterfly is dying and becoming this little husk. [...] When Guillermo said to me, “It’s about a house that breathes,” that’s why we chose the lightest fabric, just a little thing to try and help the storytelling with the idea of the house." "[As Edith falls in love with Thomas Sharpe,] the silhouette of the sleeves becomes fuller, and the flowers start growing on her dress. You have the world of the moon, and black, and Lucille being the moth, and Edith being the butterfly.” - Kate Hawley
"I wanted texture to be everywhere in the costumes… for everything to feel like it was living and breathing – from an animal or a sea creature from a shell. It all has a kind of organic quality to it. There are curvy, linear shapes, and no sharp lines. Bella’s costumes are very airy. Those sleeves are like huge lungs full of air, and she’s just been reanimated so that felt like a good thing to include. The huge sleeves also affect her body shape, which felt like a good idea, because she is more creature-like when she wears these.” - Holly Waddington

my other favorite antidote to ahistorical applications of the Hair Up = Repression trope in historical media is in my own most beloved Crimson Peak
Edith's hair is always up when she's healthy and in control of her life, doing proactive things and taking steps to get what she wants. pretty much all the time in Buffalo, and then at Allerdale when she's exploring the house before the poison really starts to take effect. even when she and Thomas consummate their marriage, a moment in which her hair could realistically have been down given the context
Tumblr media
it really serves, once her hair is down all the time, to signify that she's losing herself and getting weaker- both physically and as a character within the story
Lucille has a bit less symbolism, or perhaps just a dark mirror of the way these things often work in modern media- she's letting her hair down because she's not hiding or repressing anything, but it's not a triumphant moment. it's a loss of control, in a negative way, as her life completely unravels around her. and showing off things she kept hidden for a very good reason (and she's trying to hold it together still- her hair is almost never seen all the way down; it's braided for most of the climax)
Tumblr media
Hair Up In Public was a marker of adulthood for a woman in that era, NOT repression. a sign of normalcy, yes, but also of maturity and power. and they make good use of it that way rather than imposing a modern framework on historical fashions

Elphaba not realizing the witch hat wasn't actually a good hat, and just wearing it because Galinda told her to one time when they were teenagers
Haven't spoke to her for like two years? Gotta wear the hat anyway.
Haven't seen anyone else wear smth like that? Probably just wear it anyway, she's good at that kinda stuff.
Galinda hates you? Well she doesn't hate the hat, stick that on.
