Ppl will say being AroAce is boring but personally I think the fact that I'm not like a majority of people and have a different experience of the world than them makes me rather unique and interesting.

So, opinions over the crows being a found family trope under the cut. If you go under the cut then it“s no longer on me but on you if you get mad
First: i obviously don't own the trope, i am just interested in character dynamics , the difference between fanfic treatment, headcanons and what we actually see on page. So i have a simple question to evaluate if , to me, they fit the trope:
"Do they SEE each other as family? (therefore: do they fit?)"
And i think to anwser we should stop doing what we always do and take them as a sole character because the point of the books have always been how they are all their own person so the right thing seems to look at them individually.
I already made a post on how the crows feel about each other, not all of them love all individuals there (ex: Matthias only loves Nina and only Jesper loves Wylan) but that“s not completely needed to be considered a found family , at least under my understandment of it.
Examples of what i think fit would be three:
-As prove they don't have all to love each other, the foxes from AFTG, Neil doesn't love all of them, doesn't love his brother in law and barely tolerates his cousin in law but he sees the foxes as a sole entity that becomes his family, those are his people
-The grisha squad on the same books, they don't exactly love each other individually but they consider themselves a group, their squad is pretty much separated from the other members of the army despite having all different ranks.
So the argument on the levels of love differing is not actually an obstacle to being considered a foud family.
So the question, are they one?
The awnser is a bit obnoxious but is the best way to put it then: It strongly depends on the pov
To Wylan? It“s obvious since he has this whole paragrah over his being his only friends ever, to Wylan they are his found family and he loves each member even if he is only actually close to two of them
To Kaz? Of all people susprisingly yes. He doesn't love all of them, he doesn't love Wylan, nor Nina, definitely not Matthias. Still, he constructs the Silver Six. Let“s take in count many of the dregs have been around more than Nina, Matthias and Wylan, three of them even try to stop him getting beating up, yet Kaz doesn“t give them the same treatment or thought, to him the group of six he went to the ice court with is the special one worth naming a club after. So in Kaz“s pov it counts. Yet despite being the main character, his pov is not the only pov.
While Wylan and Kaz are an obviously "yes" Nina and Matthias are an obvious "no"
Matthias exclusively sees Nina as family, he can be fond of the other crows but they are definitely not even close to family.
Nina can be without saying, she might love Inej, Matthias and Jesper but (with the exception of Matthias cause she is still mourning him) she doesn`t even consider them home, she thinks about Ravka as much (or even more) as often as she thinks about them. These are people she loved, that were important to her growth and keeps deeply in her heart, but they are no family in any way. It helps that, unlike most of the crows, Nina has a bigger social circle independent of them.
Now Jesper i think it“s complicated. He loves 5/6 and considers family 5/6 of them yet, does he consider them a group?
To explain my point i want to use yet another example:
-Katniss from the hunger games doesn't have exactly a group and she still has a family on her mother, husband and children, but you can get some characters she still considered family like Finnick, Haymith, maybe Rue if she had more time and before breaking ties with him, she did see Gale as part of her family. So it“s not like she has a group of people that are found family to each other, she gets individuals she considers as such, but thats in relation to her, not necesarily them forming a group.
To Jesper i recall it“s a group united by a common need but not exactly one he can consider a family, at least not on the way Wylan expresses it. Still, i think it“s too close to name it a "no"
Inej to me is a bit complicated too but less ambiguous than Jesper, with her i can say a definitive. She considers Kaz, Nina and Jesper as part of her family, but she same, she doesn't group them, to her it“s the individual conection and not seeing all of them as a family. So if you only take Inej“s pov in question then no, they are not.
The reason that it came to my attention was that someone made a psot saying
"If the crows aren't found family then what is this" and...it“s pretty much a backfiring proof
It was the paragraph of the crow“s goodbye to Matthias and it certainly prover everything i just said. And maybe it was on purpose to stablish the dynamics that the pov is from Jesper, the one who sort of liked Matthias the less.
Wylan does show love to Matthias and behaves as he lost a family member, picking up tulips for him, he doesn't comfort Nina like Jesper and Inej do, he actually is there for Matthias.
Kaz would later pay his respects for the silver six club.
Jesper and Inej very clearly don't love Matthias here, neither consider him a family. Sure they are hurt he is gone, they came to respect him and Jesper is thankfull for him saving his life, not to say lament someone as young as them is leaving the world just as he redeemed himself. Unlike Nina and on a way lesser extent, Wylan, they are not feeling like they lost a beloved one. Their words about him are towards Nina, to comfort her. So it doesn“t work as a proof that the six crows are a found family, it“s a proof of how much Jesper and Inej love Nina.
Now, there is obviously nothing wrong with hc them as such, writing them as such in fanfics or on tumblr au posts or memes. This is just studying character dynamics.
It CAN be taken too far thought, such as when people say Inej and Nina should have stayed on Ketterdam just for the sake of found family, ignoring Marya in favor of Kaz as a "parent figure" or that Nina was nothing without the other crows and her ending sucked because she is no longe with them (ignoring completely she called Ravka her home many times). That kind of takes are very shallow and prioritize fanservice over character narrative.

Chris is such an underrated character in both series and fandom.
Dude was in two main story books(grant it very small moments) and still seems less popular than characters like Alabaster 😭
Which no hate to Alabaster fans, just makes me a bit sad for Chris.
Personally I think he had so much missed potential. The fact he's dropped after tlo so insane. They brought back the labyrinth but not him???
Chris went through months of mental torture to the point that he'd lost the will to live.
Dude was refusing to eat or drink, like it was that bad.
Ntm that it was Minos who cursed him, I feel like that was definitely kinda just brushed over,we kinda acknowledge the damage he did to Nico but I feel like it's not acknowledge enough that Minos could've very easily done the same to Nico that he did to Chris and many others. Personally would be an interesting thing to explore Nico acknowledging that, like thats a reasonable thing to imagine could've happen to you or those close to you(considering they learn it was Minos from him threatening to do the same to Percy and co-)
But yeah. Also, been so cool to use him to explore more sides of Hermes kids. I see him being more diplomatic and having more psychopomp side if Hermes.
Also idea of him being able to understand other languages more easily. He doesn't even notice and everyone else is just like "how it take so long for him to be claimed???"
Also, knowing how he got Clarisse's attention. It's so interesting to me. I like to imagine she's like cussing out Luke than turns to Chris and just like "sup Rodriguez" than goes back to cussing out Luke hshsg
They're such an interesting pairing to me, Clarisse finding someone who truly understands her on a deeper level and stays by her even in her worse moments...
Like his last scene in the series is literally telling the others he'll stay with her...
Chris just the chillest guy at camp,I stand by that.
I am imagining before Michael was claimed him refusing to listen to Luke but listening to Chris hdgdg
He's biting Luke but will stop when Chris grabs him.
He's just like ">:( fine" chsgdg

it’s funny how gwynriels are flooding your inbox with receipts of how gwyn will be an MC. especially her spy arc. she’s a valkyrie. a warrior. they forget that part of being a spy is that you gotta keep secrets which their favourite red head failed at😬 so what if she sat in a tree all night or for two? anyone could do that. even elain— who others have noticed be stealthy, nesta even wondered if she had been spending time so much with nuala and cerridwen that that’s why she didn’t hear her (elain) coming.
it’s not just gwyn who can be a spy. elain can’t be trusted— smh. and they think GWYN of all people CAN? she doesn’t even know anyone in the IC on a close level outside of nesta and/or cassian. are they pulling this info out of thin air? i honestly would not be surprised if lucien and vassa get a novel to themselves before their lovely gwyneth.
elain’s been here since the beginning and she’s here to stay. she won’t leave her family, her life she’s built for herself, the night court and especially azriel. if elain leaves then azriel wouldn’t think twice before following her. it’s canon that he has feelings for her and she him. azriel is probably already in love with elain. it’s right there all on the page, in the past four/five books. they just have selective reading. they choose which parts they want to read to prop up their ship and which parts to ignore. and they ignore all the signs that clearly state elain does not want to be within five feet of her mate. lucien? he only cares about elain because of the mating bond. i bet he would not look at her twice if they weren’t mates.
all the signs point to elriel. they can go argue with the wall idc. but don’t speak ill about my girl😤
I think thats what cracks me up about this whole Gwyn spying arc. She couldn’t even keep a secret, and they want her to be a spy? Just cause she did some beast watching? Lmfao ok.
Literally, Elain being stealthy JUST like Azriel. Both having the ability to sneak up on people, yet no one is suspicious of Az but turn around and think Elain is now evil/working w Koshei all for sharing the same traits Az has? Talk about misogyny. Exactly. Gwyn has no incentive to be loyal to the IC. Her friend is Nesta, thats it. Thats all she would care about. She’s not close to the IC and I dont see Mass emphasising how important it wS for Nesta to make friends outside of the IC only for her bestie to then be apart of it.
Vassien getting a book before Gwyn makes 100x more sense especially as Mass was interested in a swanlake/firebird retelling which Vassien suits.
Speak on it anon šŸ—£ļø
this isn’t even Gwyn hate. It’s pure facts. Elain is an ARCHERON sister. A character whose been here from the beginning. Who has experience with the cauldron, has interesting powers etc. She is currently more important then Gwyn. Im sick of people treating Gwyn as tho she has the same level of significance as Elain. Gwyn was JUST introduced. No one needs her pov rn.
If Elain leaves the NC, Az would too. He literally said even after 500 years he still didn’t know where he belonged. Elain and Az leaving to build and find a home together is such a beautiful arc. Elriel want each other. They follow the same pattern and parallels as the couples before them and in the massiverse. You know who doesn’t? Gwynriel.
according to gwynriels, only acosf exists that too their carefully selected, out - Of - context quotes are the only thing that matters as thats all they have. Mass didnt care enough about Gwyn to introduce her within the main series. She didnt even care to make Gwyn and Az attracted to each other on page yet im suppose to believe they’re endgame? Mass had the time to write elain & az blushing, smiling and sharing charged glances w each other yet couldn’t do anything similar w gwynriel? Its just sad. No wonder Gwynriels come up with so mang fanon HCs. They dont have much else. Eluciens can relate which is why both shippers get along so well.
Its been elriel since acowar, one of the most obvious things ever.
*our girl. Don’t speak Ill about our girl šŸ’…

idk i just feel like there's something particularly cruel about having a solid episode concept like "verosika hosts a fuck you party for blitz and everyone else he's fucked over," because its a great way to show a pattern of behavior in blitz and the effect he has on others he's been with and hurt!
then.. they put stolas there. stolas, "you have sex with me every month or your I.M.P is going under without my book you need, no exceptions until i legally gave you an asmodean crystal a year later, for your work", goetia, or whatever the fuck his last name is.
this episode is trying so hard to make stolas on equal levels to verosika and the other imps dumped by blitz, but if any of these hellborn actually knew how he got into a "relationship" with blitz to begin with, and how blitz never even had a choice in whether or not he wants to be with stolas, (even when they were kids!) i really doubt theyd want anything to do with him. stolas never explains that their relationship wasnt a relationship, just a transactional monthly hookup to literally keep blitz's business afloat. he doesn't, because he STILL doesn't fully understand what he did wrong, but understands it enough to know he had to be the one to break off the deal he made. i doubt he'll ever actually explain what the deal was to any outsiders who ask, because then stolas would be forced to actually be held accountable for his own actions, and we cant possibly have that! /sar
i think one of the worst lines from stolas in this episode, aside from most of them because i think hes annoying, was when blitz expressed he didnt know why anyone would care about him, stolas responds that this party, dedicated to blitz, because they hate him so much, shows how much they ""care."" and that might have some kind of point coming out of verosikas mouth- implying that these people genuinely cared for him at one point and he pushed them away- but absolutely not stolas's. so its no wonder that blitz responds by self deprecating himself, saying, "i dont even know why youd want to be with me." followed by stolas admitting that what he really wants is someone to care about him.
and honestly, thats another thing too. i cant believe that after everything, after everything stolas has claimed about wanting blitz because he loves and respects him, when blitz then asks WHY stolas wants him, stolas responds, "you know what i want? i want to know what its like to not be alone. i want to be someone's someone. i want someone to care about me." because it shouldve been his moment to explain to blitz what he sees in him, and why he fell in love with him to begin with the more they slept together. but it wasnt.
not only is it unbelievably selfish of stolas to make blitz go through all of this for almost a year, to not only have NO reason as to why he has/had feelings for blitz, (basically confirming to me that stolas never really cared about blitz or his feelings, still doesn't, and just needed to have an adult relationship someone who didn't outwardly hate his guts like stella did, because were 2 and a half fucking seasons into this show and still dont know why the love interest romantically wants the main character, and die hard viv stans still think the stoliz insta posts count as canon because they're on copium,) but to ignore the one good thing in his life that he insists that he genuinely loves, octavia, in favor of him acting as if he'll die alone completely if he doesn't have a partner..
y'know that one scene in adventure time where jake is like, "dude.. let's kill the horse."? thats how i feel towards stolas right now.
Let's kill the owl.
I'm so tired, Anon.

after playing your game, i feel compelled to recommend you five pieces of media (that, ngl, if you say "oh, i love those already!" ill be unsurprised lol) specifically in the "kid's media that is mostly relaxing, with a couple wtf why was that scene kinda haunting, but still overall relaxing media to watch when youre in need of comfort" + one piece of media that is Not For Kids lol
1. the game series Psychonauts. feel free to watch let's plays if you cannot afford to play or just dont want to. it's 3-ish games? there are 2 main ones and then an almost-mini-game-ish that happens in-between the other two. i like Snapcube/Penny's playthroughs a lot (Snapcube is most famous for the memes and hilarity that is The Real-Time Sonic Dub series, but she does let's plays too!), but lots of people have good runs! i would also recommend looking at people's completionist runs especially (which id argue looking for "all cut-scenes + all memory-vaults + all dialog" compilations is a bit necessary for Psychonauts? because it's easy to have an unexplored corner of someone's mindscape actually have a really fascinating piece of lore that Isn't Needed To Progress But Adds To The Specific Character's Story that you accidentally missed. but also not a big deal if you miss them. anyway) if you want an introduction to it that spoils some gameplay of the series, i recommend this video-essay about it: https://youtu.be/7IkMD3JTzjM?si=brmpAdMEqPyYbqWx
"what about my game made you think id like Psychonauts?"
your comedy for one, but also the way you like to navigate people's minds. which i do mean in terms of psychology, but also in the sense of how Io's mind works in binary, how Io sees magic, and the error/connection communication scenes we see. it reminded me of how Psychonauts built its "magic-system" so to speak, to be about how to enter people's minds and how their mental health impacts the level you play through
early parts of Psychonauts, due to it being an early 2000s game, can get kind of "cure mental illness, let's fix you" about its asylum-patients in the first game and does err towards stereotypes about it, but i appreciate that the patients are never the punchline in this very comedic game. it instead approaches their problems with a lot of empathy. and i like how later on, due to Better Information About Mental Health being accessible public knowledge as well as generlly more accepted than in the early 2000s: the game is geared with a lot more nuance about how mental health isnt about "being fixed" or "broken". that being said, i do still think youd find the game-series in its entirety really interesting in an almost opposition of Sentience: because Psychonauts is an extremely visual game, and shows how every people works complexly in an extremely visual way with a lot of varying metaphors. in comparison, Sentience (by vurtue of being a text-only game as well as the literal binary code aspects of the narrative) is an extremely Io's-headspace-centered work whose gameplay isnt visual at all, yet still accomplishes nuance and complexity about all these various characters, and while using a magic-system that is unchanging (bc numbers, math, binary) yet variable (bc Io's works different than everyone else's). so i think youd have fun in a game so different than yours, despite the similar "magic-systems" around one's mental innerworkings, and that you'd tee-hee a lot through the game
2. Moomin, in any way you want to consume it since it is a book-novel series and newspaper-comic and has multiple adaptations, such as but not limited to into television and film. the book novels is the most introspective version, the newspaper-comic is funny and absurd often, the 90s tv show is wholesome and the most palatable, the most recent tv show is a decent blend and update that deserves the praise it gets, and thats not even getting into the multiple films or the more niche tv adaptations or theater productions or or or... anyway, i like the books and 90s show best, myself. you can watch the 90s show for free on youtube, if you want; it's best with ad-blocker tho, Moomin's youtube channel put a ton of ads in there last i tried to watch. and none of this info even gets into how awesome the creator, Tove Janssen, was as a queer woman who fought against facism throughout WWII anyway she could. Henry Kathman has a 3-part series he re-uploaded as one whole video with updates that's entirety is an overview of Jansson's life-story and much of the series and its many forms as he could access here if you want to learn more: https://youtu.be/FRCzmBd5psI?si=M7nIlSPV_Y77vlBn
"what about my game made you think id like Moomin?"
mainly "Moomin In November" (especially the book Ɨ Val, but not exclusively) if im being honest. or maybe Snufkin in general Ɨ Val? maybe also some Moominpapa Ɨ Kat??? i dont fucking know for sure on that one tho
this one is harder for me to describe why i see a thread, ngl. i just can see you decompressing with a blanket and a warm mug while either the 90s show plays or you listen to an audiobook. idk. it's just A Vibe that fits you, y'know??
i think youd find the character of "Little My" funny? (i put quotations bc, yes, that is literally how its spelled. i did not forget a word. she is little and her name is "My", she is Little My lol) i can see you using her as reaction-gifs/a profile picture and whatnot
3. Fraggle Rock. it's a Jim Henson tv show, originally from the 80s but since has been re-picked up, now airing brand new episodes. it's thesis statement for existing is "to end wars" by helping raise kids to be thoughtful and focused on coexistance with others. ngl, Frootbats/Emma can sell the show better than i can, she's been releasing a deep-dive per season about the show, (doing this video-series led her to realize she wants to someday be a puppeteer herself, and she impulsively made her own Henson-inspired puppet and then inserted said puppet into season 2's video, and has since made two more puppets. i love her puppets, so much. you can watch their creation over on tiktok. so theres your context for why there is a puppet in the season 2 video lol) she's almost done with season 3's video. this is season 1: https://youtu.be/Ziaok8744_o?si=xkb1u-_eK1Av-Gut
"what about my game made you think id like Fraggle Rock?"
i think mostly the humor between characters? like the Val and Io to Connie or to Klaus dynamics. Fraggle Rock often has a similar banter, albeit more based on affection than we currently see either Klaus or Connie hold for either Io or Val (which is justified bv of how early in the game everything is, whereas the Fraggles have all known each other all their lives with great fondness. ...that being said:) i especially think youd find Red's one-sided dislike for Uncle Mat hilarious. but all the characters are hilarious. i like to joke i am a "Cotterpin Rising-Sun with a Boober moon" and i, in no small part, say that bc i do think those two characters are sooo funny (they both as well as Sprocket and Cantus are my favorites, which is HARD bc i love everyone so much, but i love those three 2% to 8% more than all the other regular/recurring characters), i love all these guys, everyone makes me snicker and do that little "pfft" breath out of your nose, it's great
also, Frootbats/Emma goes into this better than i could, but the show has a lot of really interesting messages about the creative process. specifically in the way Kiki's Delivery Service movie does that kind of messaging, iykyk. which i always think anyone who polishes their creative skills should try to watch narrative media that tries to help people better understand their own creativity and how to best nurture it
and idk, for some reason im like "you specifically need to know Wembley exists". i do not know why. maybe he relates to a character from Sentience in a way i am only subconsciously aware of. maybe i see you becoming as obssessed with this guy as Frootbats/Emma already is. idk. i just feel like You Need To Truly Know Him for reasons i cannot fully articulate rn
4. Jak & Daxter game-series. it's a game-series ive only watched people stream who dont make VODs, i wish i could recc you people to watch it from, but youre kinda on your own, im so sorry. but its so good. if youre okay with gameplay being spoiled, this video-essay is SOOO good, i love Breadsword so much: https://youtu.be/nf7ol01Xm8Y?si=4o-h8a8LPsqGhu_1
"what about my game made you think id like Jak & Daxter?"
i cant do that without serious spoilers. but, uh, "Jak's descent" overall feels like itd be of interest to you? if you want to know more before you play the game, again, watch Breadsword
the first game is decievingly gentle on you, with a relatively peaceful world. and then the worldbuilding and plot just sucker-punch its audience and characters in the neck. i think youd be into what happens there and how Jak and Daxter face off against this (see: me struggling to come up with a word without spoilers and then partially giving up) kinda-totalitarian world they stumble into
5. Neverafter, from the Dropout app's "Dimension 20" show. it's tabletop roleplay game where you watch this cast of comedians try to do a horror season, focused on fairytales and folklore. speaking from a certified scaredy-cat myself, it is scary but the continuous breaths of fresh-air that is the players reacting to certain horrorific narrations with "wHAT THE FUCK, GUYS" was All I Needed to be able to survive this show without nightmares lol there's unfortunately not a review or video-essay i can send you to, not unless you feel like going on tiktok and looking around MouseAbolition/Kenna's account for analysis. so, uh, here is the first episode of the series in full? the rest is on the Dropout app: https://youtu.be/7GTogwQVmYE?si=e29lXKnhXrbfOEAV
"what about my game made you think id like Neverafter?"
again, we get into spoilers here. uh. so though i cannot say how (bc spoilers), i can say they get into a form of existential horror i think youd REALLY love considering the direction of your game. we get into a lot of all the variations of storytelling, like the countless varied endings of Sleeping Beauty or Little Red Riding Hood, and how Different Versions All Existing In Tandem yet seperate impacts these characters and their relationship to... for lack of a better term, the Big Freak that is the "authorship" or lack thereof or oral tradition of telephone and whatnot of it all...??? it's very good, i think youd be into it if you arent already
and that's all i got, but i thought some reccs on media to enjoy on your downtime (assuming you dont Already Know All Of These) would be fun for you and help you feel a lil refreshed, energized (maybe even inspired further? idfk) for future working on your game. thanks for the fun afternoon, ive really enjoyed your game šŸ’žšŸ’“šŸ’ž
Tumblr media
this is so well timed bc i've been running out of youtube rabbit holes to go down thank you soldier. I've at least heard of all of these but the only one I've actually read/watched is Moomins.
I've had a Dropout sub for years and I've still never watched more than like 2 episodes of D20 I should really get on that lol

Hiiiiiiiii šŸ‘€ šŸ‘‰šŸ‘ˆ thats SUCH a cool redesign for Zariel, it got me so excited to DM a DiA campaign. Any tips for running it? I LOVE YOUR ART ITS SO AMAZING AND THE COLORS ARE SO PRETTY, THANK YOU FOR SHARING IT OKBYEE
Aww thank you so much! ā¤ā¤ā¤ I LOVE Descent into Avernus, but my love is a complicated one. I do think it is a really good, albeit difficult module, to learn how to become a better DM, though... I will explain.
The lore in DiA is pretty flat and the campaign is pretty railroady by design. If you have a roleplay-heavy group, I think it is best to heavily alter the module and incorporate things in there, that are very relevant to your players. That is also its magic though, because you can make the conscious decision to just use DiA as a base and structure, that you then heavily alter. The premise of the main quest is cool and imo easy to follow, so taking that and shaping everything around it can be pretty neat. I don't think I would have learned as much as a DM, if I had just used a "perfect" module that already did everything for me. If that is not what one looks for though, that's also understandable.
Tips:
In DiA, the characters start in Baldur's Gate, which is imo the absolute worst decision I've ever seen. Elturel's fate is integral to the story, so I recommend having your PCs at least see what happens to Elturel. I recommend the oneshot The Fall of Elturel for that, where the PCs become witness to Elturel's fate from afar. It will also cover the low-level sessions in a neat way. Having at least one player character with a connection to that city also really helps. Otherwise, your PCs will just go "Oh wow how terrible. Anyway, I'm not from there anyway, don't know anyone from there, never been there, whatever lmao."
Some people cut out the Baldur's Gate part, but my group enjoyed that area a lot, so you can use it for roleplay-heavy sessions and fleshing out the lore. It is also a great sandbox to figure out how you as the DM will implement your characters goals and backstory into the plot, before venturing forth. Having a player character from Baldur's Gate or with a connection from there is also perfect. SPOILERS: Same thing with Candlekeep as well. It is a wicked cool location that is not explored in the module at all, but it might end up a very interesting mini arc for your PCs if you approach it on your own terms.
To flesh out the lore and make everything feel more lived in and logical (note: there are some very silly bits in the module, that would make a thoughtful player immediately go "that makes NO sense lol"), I recommend checking out the Alexandrian Remix. It can go on huge tangents that are unnecessary for your own means though, so don't feel like you have to stick to it 100%. It does have some really neat ideas and fixes for the lore though, and I have ended up using it more than the actual book lmao.
Avernus as a Sandbox is also great. In general, if you find a way to give your players choice in where they go in the Nine Hells, they will probably have a good time. I think they should def feel pressure and know of a goal, but also make sure that they have power over what road they take there, you know?
I mentioned Candlekeep – Elminster's Candlekeep Companion is also an amazing resource if you wanna flesh out that location. I have also heard of some people adding adventures from Candlekeep Mysteries in there, but I didn't do it myself cuz my players felt time pressure.
Contrast the evil, awful and depressing with moments that are nice and calm, even if it's just roleplay opportunities. Otherwise everything will feel like a drag. On the other hand, don't be afraid to then overwhelm your players by throwing a bit too much at them afterwards. High tensions and emotions are perfect for the setting imo, but you need to design it with ups and lows as to not overwhelm.
I have completely rewritten some of the Forgotten Realms lore, changed characters' genders and names and races in the book (Ravengard is a woman in my story, Reya is a dragonborn, etc.) especially about the deities. Don't be afraid to make the story your own. I also incorporated the player backstories heavily into the plot, which makes them sometimes go on completely homebrewed sidequests. Embrace that and don't be afraid of it!
Sometimes players also see connections where there are none, or they speculate about super wild stuff – and this might be controversial – but sometimes it is really neat to take some of those ideas (not all! otherwise there is no surprise) and make them actually relevant, even if they weren't before. If your players are engaged, that is always the best possible situation. Making some of their thoughts true can be on one hand extremely satisfying for them, and on the other hand they will make your own made-up-world much more interesting, because they collaborated unknowingly in making it so much richer and complex.
It really helps the flow of the campaign to have at least one PC that is: Morally dubious, or interested in deities, religion or lore. If not, you as the DM can attempt to make them more interested until they actually get to Avernus, through new goals or revelations. The themes of the Nine Hells have a lot to do with corruption and betrayal and emotions, so having characters with themes that go into that direction will make it easier to keep your players engaged.
This is my own opinion, but maybe play a couple devil npcs with this motto: There are certain good deeds only a devil can commit. Devils are the enemies, but they also have to become your allies. Your characters will be literally walking through a plane that is inhabited primarily by devils, and they will have to speak to some of them or parlay, if they don't want to be ripped to shreds immediately. Devils are smart and cunning, and many would prefer to talk it out, instead of risking their lives in the Nine Hells. This can also be an opportunity to explore corruption or redemption arcs, or to explore fiendish pacts. Both can flesh out the story tremendously. šŸ‘€
The setting gives you the opportunity to explore some esoteric and theological concepts. IF that is your jam (it is certainly mine), think about how you make that digestible to your players. They could find lore in a library, find strange ruins, meet a powerful deity, get visions by other deities, be manipulated by archdevils, etc. You don't have to leave it all as subtext, because devils and angels and otherwise literally become a central point of the campaign. Also don't be afraid to get weird about angels and devils. They are from a different plane – making them a little alien, letting them have absolutely wild opinions about the universe, not needing to fit them into our ideas of science – that is rly interesting stuff to explore as a PC and also DM. Resources (optional)
Flee Mortals by MCDM, Tome of Beasts (2023), Tome of Beasts 2, Creature Codex have really awesome monsters
Encounters in Avernus
The Encyclopedia of Demons & Demonology by Rosemary Ellen Guiley is a book that I own privately for some creative projects, but I got some neat inspiration from it for my campaign too!
A lot of the lore in Dnd is very questionable, but especially in the older versions you can find some wild and creative shit (and also lots of problematic rubbish you can just filter out lmao) that is mentioned once and then never again. Little nuggets like that usually inspire me the most and a simple sentence can spawn an entire lore or mission idea for me. Some books that you might find interesting (try to find a pdf version online cuz they aren't printed anymore) are Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss, Fiendish Codex II: Tyrants of the Nine Hells (3.5), Guide to Hell (2e), Manual of the Planes (3.5).

šŸ›ļø šŸ±šŸ›Œ 🐱 (← us at the sleepover)
US AT THE SLEEPOVER!!!! THATS US!!!!
but I’ve been thinking a lot about my favorite Japanese translations lately, so I’ll drop three of those! I should seek more out actually
1. Black Rain by Ibuse Masuji
This is extremely heavy, following a family from post-nuclear Hiroshima (I wanna say in 1945? 46? Quite immediately post bomb).
I remember being really intrigued by the way that it explored the social stigma around those with radiation sickness after the fallout. So much of history focuses on the fear, the chaos, but what happens to those who bear the marks of a loathed history and carry it forward? Especially in a society so rooted in conformity and communal acceptance?
Reflecting on it now, it’s interesting to think about — now living in a ā€œā€ā€ā€ā€post Covidā€ā€ā€ā€ā€ world, there’s something like embarrassment about catching it now. So late? When ā€œeveryone’s already had itā€? How shameful, in a bizarre way, to have illness that reminds everyone of a time we want to move on from. It’s obviously not the same, but it’s such a wildly different societal context now than when I first read it, you know?
2. A Personal Matter by Ōe Kenzaburō
Another heavy, and frankly crude, story of a young father struggling to come to grips with his newborn son’s significant disability. Do not mistake this for disability representation; it’s honest and filled with self-loathing, blame towards the world for something random.
What stood out to me about this was how awful it was. The descriptions of people were simple and cutting, lacking any sort of tact or softness. As someone so afraid of writing anything even remotely ā€œgrossā€ — a subconscious fear of it ruining a readers immersion, somehow — I find it inspiring and brave.
I read this before getting back into writing, but I would love to revisit it again on a technical level.
3. Tokyo Ueno Station by YÅ« Miri
I devoured this ghost story (not in the scary way) in a single sitting. It’s a beautifully crafted commentary on the sort of… arbitrary nature of class disparity, with the main character — a recently deceased laborer— sharing multiple life milestones with the imperial family; he was born in the same year as the emperor, lived in the park that (iirc) the imperial family is set to visit before the upcoming Olympics. They’ve cosmically crossed paths and yet ended up nowhere near one another, and the author begs you to ask why.
It’s a reflective story on how the world around him continues to push on and ignore the issues that lead to his life being plagued with misfortune and misery. Excellent all around.

Nona the Ninth Reaction - Chapter 17
only nearly 50% of the way through this book and we’re already on day four. and the description that ā€˜Hot Sauce draws her gun’ on this day is very ominous
ā€˜That fucking shuttle’ Palamedes i am not as smart as you, i am both very concerned and totally clueless about what Palamedes realised about the shuttle. i guess my main theories are Pyrrha has either been taken/went willingly for some unknown reason to the Emperor’s shuttle, or she’s been taken into BoE custody for some reason??
from We Suffer’s perspective i guess it makes sense that she wants Nona to be Harrow, because despite their overall perspective on necromancy, having a Lyctor who could actually help them fight against the Houses could be incredibly helpful for BoE. at least i hope its that because Harrow did help kill an awful lot of planets in the last book, and i imagine some of BoE might want revenge
ohhhhmfg Pal and Cam’s situation is so tragic. Palamedes has technically survived but from his perspective he’s doing exactly what he rejected so firmly in GtN, killing her. this is just cruelĀ
and for all my theorising about Nona i didn’t consider what Pal suggests here, that Nona’s some kind of full soul merger of Harrow and Gideon. for starters i think its unlikely, given Nona has her similarities but is very different in many unique ways to both of them. and on a more personal level i just hope thats not the case because i like my character’s souls unmerged please and thank you
i wonder if Nona’s going to be able to do something about the RB eventually, given she seems to be able to understand it. also describing it as ā€˜low[ing] sadly, like a cow’ feels like a very pointed comparison given John apparently killed a whole bunch of cows a couple chapters ago. i mean i have no clue what the fuck it could mean or why but it feels significantĀ
i’m still very intrigued as to whose side the Angel is on. based on her story here she’s clearly not associated with the Houses, but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s with BoE either. she’s kind to Nona and a good teacher to the kids seemingly but i still think she’s suspicious and don’t fully trust herĀ
the absolute irony of John’s motivations apparently being to save the Earth and everyone from climate change, only to years later be killing planets and using them for miningĀ
ā€˜An interesting group, your family’ ohhh shit, first Hot Sauce and now the Angel seem to be taking note of the strangeness of Nona’s situation. and i’m curious whats up with Hot Sauce and the Angel’s relationship, what with her having already told Hot Sauce the survival advice she gives the rest, and Hot Sauce being so determined to look out for her. i wonder if Hot Sauce has confided in the Angel about Nona’s cut not healing, and thats why they seem suspicious of Nona’s family here
oooh is Nona’s drawing that seems to disturb the Angel an awful lot her drawing her dreams, of Gideon maybe?
oh the kid’s plan and swearing this oath is going to go so so badly. i feel like there’s no way they’re not gonna find out Nona’s related to necromancy sooner rather than later
wtf Hot Sauce is very ruthlessly practical about Born in the Morning’s dads being ā€˜baggage’. itsĀ  hard to believe she’s roughly the same age as Jeannemary was in GtN. like don’t get me wrong, Jeannemary went through an awful lot but she and Isaac were also ā€˜annoying teens’ in the way Hot Sauce really hasn’t gotten to beĀ

So Hana; I came across a post talking about unpopular twst opinions and was wondering if you had any.
Hello Violet šŸŒøšŸ’ššŸŒ·
I hope it’s okay for me to call you Violet šŸ’ššŸŒ·
This is a rather interesting question šŸ¤” and I had to think on it a bit. I honestly don’t know if some of what I say is unpopular or not, so I guess I’ll express a few of my opinions that I have. ā˜ŗļøšŸŒŗ
I guess before I list them I should say that this is my opinion only. I don’t mean to hurt anyone by expressing them nor am I calling out anyone. Literally just my thoughts. You’re allowed to agree or disagree✨✨
Normally, I would assume I wouldn’t have to put a disclaimer such as this because everyone has their own opinions and we should all have an open mind but I’ve seen the internet lol and wowza on how some act to such things lol šŸŒŗšŸ™
I hate the guest room. Personally, I’m not into that kind of mechanics in gaming. It’s not for me. The fact that we have to do it to level up friendship levels irks me. And it’s a complicated system too which is another annoying aspect. I also kind of blame the guest room function for personal stories being lowered since those have been replaced with furniture. It’s just an extra chore that I’m not really into.
Event wise: I think we have too many octa (+ ortho and ace) in them. My diasomnia bias aside, I don’t think the other characters get enough spotlight. When was the last time Ruggie was in an event? Cater? Riddle? Jack? Kalim? Rook? Deuce? I know octa make them money but still, give the others more spotlight? I don’t count the beach or Halloween event either. Because Halloween, half the cast is in it and beach event was similar. Even New years I don’t count, because eventually, we will get them all in new years outfit. The usually four character events is what I’m speaking of because that’s when you get proper screen time and development for each character. I can literally go on lolol
I don’t know why this would be unpopular but it seems it might be? But I don’t hate RSA. They have a lot of potential story telling wise and their side of things. And I know there’s biasness with NRC and we wanting them to win, but I feel there’s more to RSA than we know. Like how we shouldn’t judge villains, we shouldn’t judge the ā€œheroesā€ either.
Jp schedule wise I don’t think they are too slow as many believe. I think for the working female class, which the game is aimed at, the scheduling is perfect since it was made for them after all. It gives them time for daily life and twst gaming. Doesn’t mean I don’t get impatient either lolol
On the other spectrum, EN is going too quick. With events and main story. Slow down. What are you trying to accomplish except burn out your fanbase?
I don’t want an anime. We will get one. There’s a high chance and I’ll watch it obviously. But I honestly don’t care for one. The issues that an anime will bring…is a lot.
I don’t think the gameplay is boring. As mentioned before, the game was made for the female working class. So the gameplay is to the point, and depending on the event, can be challenging. But grinding wise and all that? It’s pretty working class friendly. If I didn’t have the auto lessons and battles, I wouldn’t be playing it. It’s because of those mechanics that I am. Thats what stops me from playing many mobile games. The constant forced to play and keep track. Hence part of why I’m not into Hoyoverse games.
I don’t really care for ā€œthis place in twst = this place in IRL.ā€ to me, it’s a game in a fantasy world. Is it interesting to see some of the influences? Yes, of course. But that’s it. I’m playing this game for the fantasy setting, the magic, the story, and the characters. I don’t really care to add, realism, I guess you could say? (I’m trying to escape reality okay? Why would I want it in my games?? 🤣🤣)
I wish we had more magic in my magic world. And I think it mainly applies for book 7 for me personally and how ā€œwow, tech is going to beat malleus and save the dayā€ but I kind of wish that isn’t the case. Yes, it makes for fun story telling and memes. But, for a magic based dorm, I want a magic based solution. That and the fact, I don’t care for the implication how magic is slowly being taken over by technology. Kind of hits close to home you know?? With all the AI shenanigans.
I hope two certain popular theories aren’t true and I’ll leave it there. My personally thoughts on them is, I hope it’s not that predictable and I had hoped for a different route for such characters/events.
I’ll stop there before I make a whole essay for you to read lmao 🤣🤣 I have more thoughts that I could share but this is already so long šŸ˜†
I don’t know if this was a ā€œunpopular opinionā€ or more me rambling but I’ll let you decide that Violet šŸ™šŸ’žā˜ŗļø
What about you? What are some of your thoughts?
Would love to hear other’s opinions as well ā˜ŗļøšŸŒŗ

btw full disclosure i did go through a phase of trying to listen to hockey romances last spring and i think the only hockey romance where i actually enjoyed it and made it through the whole book was the one where the female main character was so magically Hot and Sexy with magical hypnotizing breasts that she ended up in a poly relationship with like the goalie, and a forward, and i think a bitter injured player dude? i lost count at one point. everyone was bi and everyone was having sex with everyone else and there was actually not much conflict at all just a lot of shared hottness. im personally one of the painfully monogamous to a fault bisexual types so all the poly shipping was a little shocking and scandalous for me. but truly the book transcended not being relatable and jumped into such insane levels of absurd that it was extremely entertaining. the woman character would meet a dude and i would think oh ok THIS is the love interest. but then she just... kept collecting love interests. like pokemon. it was wild. and trust me in that book the hockey did not matter one bit lmao.
so yeah. thats my bar for quality in romances usually.

Call me crazy but i think the whole ā€œwho is more evilā€ sentiment is like. Objectively Not The Point of the show? Like. Theyre *vampires* theyre all sorts of fucked up and evil and thats on purpose. This show is basically if queer coded villains were all the main characters. Their terrible choices only make them more interesting. Personally (having not read the book) i started out not liking armand but THEN we started to get his fucked up little backstory and inner monologue and now i love him so so so much. Like YEAH he orchestrated claudia’s death but honestly? That is the most interesting thing they could have done with him!! I want him to continue to lie and kill and make fucked up choices, hes such a fascinating, tragic character, and i love him for it!!
yeah I've said often about iwtv, books and show, that I think its all about choosing your favorite horrible little guy because they all suck lol. it's not quite evident in the show as an overarching theme yet but I also think a major theme of the books is that the vampires forgive each other for unforgivable things because ultimately they are all each other has got in immortality. they HAVE to operate on insanely radical levels of forgiveness or they'll either go insane or some other vampire will take them out for hurting someone important to them. and to be clear I think it's totally fine to disagree with this (me with armand and marius obviously lol) and to think on a personal level that some of them are worse than others but thats not a distinction that the text is very much concerned with

sorry to be that person who inboxes you about your post that blew up, but i'm wondering if you could elaborate on your feelings re: great cities? as someone who was pretty disappointed by the second book i'm curious as to someone else's take on it
do not apologize i love that you messaged me about this because i love to talk about that series LMAO. i genuinely do love it a lot and think about and draw manhattan often because he lives in my head rent free 24/7. And I don't think its bad as much as it is just kind of mid, but it's literally like in that post, I love some characters and concepts but I don't think they're often executed well.
Especially as someone who loves some of NKJ's other work the writing style and commentary just felt much more surface level and juvenile than what I expect from her. It was very much like baby's first introduction to racism and gentrification as a concept. It's less ABOUT racism and gentrification and more using racism and gentrification as a shorthand to identify the Bad Guys. It felt really silly to me that all the main characters, people with vastly different backgrounds, have identical politics and all know how to speak in updated social justice terminology. And of course all the bad guys are cartoonishly and obviously bigoted, with the exception of Aislyn who is instead just portrayed as stupid. It's this very simplistic rendering of bigotry that I feel like is a huge waste of examining racism through the concept of a personified new york, because there's so many interesting ways you can go with that.
speaking of main characters....i don't feel like any of them exist as fully realized people other than manhattan, aislyn, brooklyn, and neek. The majority of them just aren't very interesting because they don't seem to have any kind of inner conflict or arc, especially compared to Manhattan who seems to be shouldering every subplot and the entirety of the books' emotional weight.
The first book I think you can ignore a lot of this for just because the concept goes so hard and it follows that simple avengers-style structure of introducing characters and assembling a team, but the second book has majorrrr issues even just purely structurally, I think stemming from the fact that it was supposed to be 2 books originally. Because of that there's just way too much happening and none of it feels explored or resolved. The city multiverse tree shit did not need to be explained and the explanation just did not make sense and that makes me sad to say that because cities as eldritch beings is such a banger concept and I normally love 4D nonsense so thats how you know its bad.
More than anything I just feel like it's such a waste. It's such a good concept with some really interesting characters that live in me forever. Personified new york and eldritch evils as colonizers is just so symbolically rich and I would have loved to have read the version of this story that felt as well thought out as 5th season did

What would your ideal book be like (as in, what theoretical book would be your absolute favourite) what genre, page count, setting, characters, etc would it have?
oohhhh this is such an interesting ask. hmm i'll have to lay this out in dot points
BE READY FOR LOTS OF TEXT!
also i am indecisive and messy so my opinions will probably change idk T-T
alr here we go
- genre: psychological novel? im not exactly sure what the genre is but i love when books follow a mentally ill character that's just trying their best to navigate through life, and the book is about the way they interact with their surrounds and respond to issues and cope with their past and come to decisions, iykwim?
BUT I WANT FANTASY in it too so it will be epic. i love fantasy world building and i love when it makes so so so much sense. it would be cool if they had elements and got sorted into elemental groups too- that is so satisfying and fun to read.
- page count: probably 500. personally i think a normal book is 300, and it seems daunting when it's got like 700 pagesz but considering that this is my ideal book, i think i'd be sad if it had less than 400 pages (cus the story would be over soon) so i'd say 500 pages is the perfect amount.
- setting: in terms of time, i never really cared for it. i realise that i should probably have a preference on which century i like to read, but i find that characters can be mentally ill and epic no matter if they are from the future or the past.
in terms of location, hmm i wouldn't want to read about a character being anywhere with tropical or summery vibes. i like my characters knee deep in snow and drenched from head to toe in rain. it keeps them depressed and relatable ^^ (/hj....?)
oh also it would be cool if the country and places were mad up, since that this is a fantasy.
WAIT OR asia. i am obsessed with books that focuses on/is based off asia :)
- characters: trios are the best and i will die on that hill. ok like i dont need the trios to be together 24/7 but i need there to be THREE main characters if you know what i mean. one of them can be an antihero idc. it just has to be THREE.
oh also i love to read in the perspective of characters who are ambitious and feisty and impulsive because they're the opposite of me. but also i'd like them (idc abt gender) to be cunning, witty and good at making plans.
another character that i need in the trio is the smart one. there HAS to be a smart side character or else i will NOT fall in love with the book. i need the character who makes all the entensive plans. i need the character who is a walking dictionary. i need the character who hates to fight and would rather be learning but is somehow good at it and therefore forced to fight alongside the makn character. (oopsies im just describing the poppy war. but that is not a crime ;])
if its a soldier poet king trio i will be obsessed with it forever and ever
ok so for the stuff that u didnt ask but im gonna include:
-writing style: advanced. work my mind to death but enrichen it at the same time. i dont mind a difficult and layered magic system- in fact i LOVE THOSE, as long as they make sense and they are creative. do not give me that "she let out a breath she didnt know she was holding" bs.
i want "the night circus" level description when it comes to settings. i need to see taste hear smell FEEL the fucking surroundings
-vibe: doomed from the start. i dont want my characters to be happy. make me fall in love and then break my heart and do not apologise for it :,) (shit am i masochistic? damn)
- others: it would be cool if it is somehow relevant to our present irl current political state/ real world problems. it would be even cooler if it somehow fits a ton of mitski songs. also gayness is very welcomed
yeahh thats all i got for now. oops i wrote alot. at the start of my reply i was thinking along the lines of solitaire and crime and punishment and no longer human, but then it was all scrapped and i based it all off of the poppy war trilogy because it did fantasy and character dynamics/personalities/backstories SO RIGHT.
tysmmm for this ask. i would love to ask it right back, but i dont know who you are :(( ahsvsj feel free to tell me anyways tho in my askbox as an anon !!

finished The Price of the Phoenix! review under the cut-
tldr: this book is gay as FUCK and on top of that its quite good
im gonna get it out of the way right now: Kirk and Spock are gay as hell in this book and its actually insane to read. every interaction between them- whether it be the original Jim or the clone James- was dripping with tension and longing and actual textual love. this was Amok Time levels of "how the fuck did this (insanely gay shit) air" and I applaud Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath for it. Spock's unwavering loyalty to Kirk, both Kirks, and it being his driving force throughout the novel, the mind link between him and James, the raw emotional state he's in... and both Kirks and how they rely on Spock, know him, love him... LORD
ahem. anyways. this is a GREAT Spock novel. the character exploration for Spock here is just so good and so compelling. this is Spock at some of his lowest, barely holding himself together, fighting his emotions down and just trying to keep going. Spock wants Omne DEAD and he wants to be the one to break his neck. he's so viciously furious and grief-stricken, its honestly beautiful to read him in such a volatile state. this isnt a side of Spock we often get to see, and what else could bring him to this point besides the faked death of his captain, the abduction, the cloning... great to see just what will drive Spock to literal murder and vengeance. his POV chapters were my favourite throughout, especially in the rare tender moments he shared with James. so many facets of his character are on display here, and all so wonderful to read
my second favourite part of this novel was the Commander's presence. what a POWERHOUSE she is. I thoroughly enjoyed how she effortlessly manhandles both Kirks whenever she needs to, and how bad this throws him off. she's a wicked fighter, every fight she has with Omne is fantastic to visualize. shes also ruthless and cold, with a lot of great Romulan logic on display. I love love love that she was one of the main characters in this novel, I love how we got to see more of this genuinely fascinating character, makes me wish we got more of her and the Romulans in TOS. her romance with James was predictable, but I found I quite enjoyed it, especially since they made it very clear that she wouldnt be bowing to him, nor him to her. they'll definitely make for an interesting couple
the issue of the two Kirks was a fascinating thread throughout. its quite the moral conundrum- the rights of the original, what to do with James, what rights does he have as a copy, what can they ask of him, etc. I dont think theres honestly a true right answer, and thats the conclusion they all seem to reach, as the best they can do is send to him to Romulus with the Commander as her princeling. its not an entirely satisfying conclusion, but I think thats deliberate, because I dont think there is a satisfying conclusion in this scenario. they cant keep James on the Enterprise, they cant just let him loose, the best they can do is keep him under lock and key and secrets on Romulus as the Commander's boytoy. a fate I wouldnt mind, tbh, but hey thats just me
Bones gets a couple of chapters, and I loved his. his relationship with Spock is what shines most for me from his chapters- his care for Spock is made very obvious, and the two of them are shown to be able to talk with just their eyes, much like Kirk and Spock do. I wish we could've had more with Bones, but that would've thrown off the structure and flow of the story, so I understand why his chapters were limited
Omne himself was an interesting villain. I wasn't super invested in him, but I did find the idea of him interesting. I think he's the weakest part of this novel, in that his whole thing relies on the idea of the alpha male, and a lot of him felt like... how do I describe this. you know when youre a kid, playing some sort of battle with your friends, and you make some shit up like 'oh you cant get through my shield' and 'I have a SHIELD BREAKING HAMMER'? thats what Omne's repeated one-upping felt like, after a point. the fight scenes with him were good, I could very much buy that he was physically stronger than our protagonists, but when it came to his tech and especially his last appearance on the Enterprise... yeah. im not saying I disliked it, but it did feel weak
overall I quite enjoyed this book. it was a slower read, I tended to read a chapter or two before going to bed every night, and I liked it that way. not one I picked up and tore through, but that isnt a criticism. sometimes books just want to be enjoyed slowly, and this was one I felt I wanted to take my time on. for my first TOS book, I thought it was really good, and ill definitely have to look into some more TOS books to read once im through my current to-read stack

NO SEXISM, RACISM, HOMOPHOBIA, TRANSPHOBIA, OR ANY FORM OF DISCRIMINATION! This is a safe space and though I am open to a difference of opinion especially when it comes to fandom based things, I will not tolerate any blatant hate in any form. Be a decent human and be respectful.
Boundaries-
Be honest and authentic, Be open minded and not ignorant, and having open and civil communication
That’s a bit about me, be kind, the world needs more of it, and I hope you enjoy the dumpster fire that is this blog :))
