I recently reread the Fairy Tail manga...
Well, what can I say, from the very beginning of this anime / manga, I liked a couple of Natsu/Lucy and I were scared of their long-term relationship for a while
My fanatical desire for their relationship lived in my heart for a long time, until I realized a simple truth
They will be 100% together, I am no longer afraid of such a long development of relations, because it is already clear and understandable that everything will be fine with them
I'll explain:
In all my long (25 years) life, I have not seen so many hints from the author about their relationship
(How do I want to see so many hints about Kogami and Akane from the Psycho Passport🥲)
How many times did Lucy calm Natsu down, how many times did Natsu rush into battle, seeing that Lucy was in danger
You can say no, he was eager to fight for the guild and for his friends, yes you are absolutely right
But look at it from the other side, Mashima supports NaLu's day, he painted NaLu's daughter, can this not be considered a wild hint at their canon?
I believe that at the end of all 100-year quests and the continuation of these 100-year quests, Natsu will finally understand that it's time to take the relationship to a new level (to the level of Edolas, otherwise, knowing Natsu, he will transfer them to a completely different, unknown level)
So why am I doing this, just recently I was in a misunderstanding and even in a panic that they are not being made a couple, but after looking at several sites and blogs, I am convinced for the first time that they are canon and will be canon
A few facts:
• The author made bold allusions to their relationship several times throughout the manga (how many screenshots do I have on my phone, God)
• The author drew his daughter NaLu and adheres to their day, celebrating it annually with fans
• NaLu is officially canon in Edolas!
(After a while I expect it in the original world)
• Plus another chapter from the 100-year quest, which shows alternative characters from the original, where Lucy and Natsu have an interesting relationship, if you understand what I mean 😏
I will also present some screenshots in addition 😁

Well, thank you all for your attention 😄
Sorry for the mistakes, I'm working with a translator 🥲

As this term comes to a close, The Guild Awards will be taking a short hiatus. This time is always spent reviewing the process and seeing what can be revamped for the next term. We also love hearing from the fandom (ie: YOU!) for suggestions regarding any changes or additions.
Due to low level of participation in recent terms, we will be decreasing the terms to celebrating bi-annually instead. Our new terms will be held in March and October. We hope this will allow for more time so participants can find pieces to nominate as well as enjoy content that has already been nominated in the past. Remember, this event is held to celebrate the fandom creators, and can only continue to be held if the fandom participates.
We will officially be back in full swing on March 1st! We will still be around in case you have questions or concerns, but please take this time to read new fanfiction and find new fanart. We strongly encourage everyone to nominate different writes and artists for the next term, so to spread the love of this fandom around.
As the day gets closer to the start of the next term, we will be keeping everyone in the loop when it comes to changes and updates. We wish you a wonderful rest of the holiday season! Thank you again for making this such a wonderful experience! See you soon!

Would you rather binge watch the entire fairy tail series in one sitting, no sleeping (eating and drinking is allowed), or only get to watch one episode every other month (and not being allowed to consume any official fairy tail content outside of that single episode)?
wow! these both sound like terrible options LMAOOOO
328 episodes at about 22 minutes each totals to 7216 minutes which is 120 hours or 5 days. it's no one piece but it's certainly not the easiest watch in the world either. see the thing is i value my sleep a lot, so if this had let me get 8 hours of sleep and then do nothing but binge it i would be all for it, but if i don't get that 8 hours of sleep i would feel like shit! i would not be able to enjoy it because i would be too busy feeling like fucking shitty poopoo garbo and trying to stay awake
the other option also does not sound better! let's say that "every other month" means once every 3 months. for 328 episodes that's 984 months which is 82 YEARS. i would be dead. the poor nurse would come in to give me by semi-annual fairy tail episode and i'd still be on tartaros. doing that would be fine, but to not be able to consume any official media outside of that??? that's my hell!! i can only read so many nalu fics with the word luce in it. i need to ruminate my brain in the anime or manga to refresh their voices in my brain and make good, in character fics or i will Die
so gun to my head if i had to choose, i'd go with the first one, because at the very least it would be over quickly
thank god this is just a hypothetical

distracted, and it’s all your fault
G | Words - 1.2K | Fairy Tail | Nalu
AO3
Lucy hummed as she looked through the binoculars the client had let her borrow, not spying any suspicious activity. She placed them back down on the boulder she was partially hidden behind and sighed.
The team had taken a job that required them to keep a lookout for a group of bandits that had been terrorising the local town recently. They were suspected to have a base camp not too far into the forest.
Today was a day of celebration in the town—some sort of annual event similar to Magnolia’s harvest festival—so the mayor requested for them to locate the group and then hold them off if they attempt to attack during the festivities.
It hadn’t taken too long to locate them. Happy and Carla were keeping watch from above while Erza, Wendy and Gray took the south. That left Lucy and Natsu to the north of the bandits’ base camp with the town about half a kilometre behind them.
“Anything happen yet?” Natsu asked, nudging Lucy’s shoulder with his own.
She shook her head and tapped a finger to her chin. “I’m honestly not sure if anything will, at this rate. The mayor told us these bandits have been attacking in the dead of the night when there aren’t many people around, so it would be against their MO to rush in when the whole town is gathered in one place.”
“So basically what you’re saying is I don’t get to beat these guys up?”
“Sorry,” she said with a shrug. “Not this time.”
Natsu pouted, leaning up on the boulder, his knees on the ground practically touching hers. From her position beside him, Lucy got a good look at him. Her eyes roamed from the bulging muscles of his biceps, down to his perfectly chiselled chest, and up to his sharp jawline. The longer Lucy stared, the more her mind began to wander.
It was dangerous territory, something she preferred to leave unexplored.
As she finally reached his eyes, Lucy saw Natsu staring straight back at her. Lips shifting into a smirk, he raised a questioning brow. As he leaned closer, her muscles tensed up and she felt like her face was about to set ablaze.
“Something got you… distracted?” He teased, chuckling as he gave her his usual bright grin.
Lucy scowled, keeping her mouth sealed shut. He could be worse than that damn cat sometimes.
As Natsu leaned even closer, to the point where Lucy could feel his breath fanning her face, she lurched back and yelled what was quite possibly the most embarrassing thing she’d said in her life.
“Stop being too attractive!”
Lucy’s eyes widened as she registered what she’d just said. Her brain to mouth filter had completely flown out the window! And knowing what Natsu was like, he would never let her forget about this.
Oh, gosh, what if Happy found out? She’d be doomed for eternity!
In the distance, there was a muffled shout. Lucy yelped as Natsu suddenly pushed her down so they were both fully hidden behind the boulder.
Unfortunately for her, that also meant her head ended up against Natsu’s chest with his arms tightly wrapped around her midsection. Lucy’s tank top had ridden up slightly, meaning it was skin pressed against skin, which only served to worsen her state of fluster.
Slowly, Natsu peered up over the boulder. Lucy bit her lip, trying not to let her mind wander off as it had before. The last thing she needed right now was to be caught ogling him again.
Stupid Natsu and his stupid, handsome face!
“Looks like they didn’t spot us.” Natsu said, leaning up a bit further.
Lucy heaved a sigh of relief as Natsu let go of her. She hastily pulled her tank top down so her midriff was no longer exposed.
“Can… can we pretend that didn’t happen?” She asked, pointedly looking away.
“What? You calling me attractive? No way!”
“I didn’t say that,” she tried to deny, closing her eyes and crossing her arms over her chest. After a few seconds of silence, she opened them again to see Natsu giving her an amused look as he obviously tried to hold back a laugh.
“I’m pretty sure you did.”
“Something must be wrong with your hearing then.”
He snorted and rolled his eyes. “Lucy, you and I both know my hearing is far better than yours.”
She winced. Yeah, that wasn’t her best work. Lucy bit her lip as she tried to think of another excuse—a more plausible one this time. For a writer, she sure was short on ideas.
Come on, Lucy! Think!
“Hey, Lucy,” Natsu said as he repeatedly poked her arm. She batted his hand, but he continued to do it anyway. Lucy’s cheeks puffed up adorably and her lips pursed into a pout. “I know what I heard. You think I’m attractive!”
As he continued to tease her, Lucy’s eye twitched in irritation. He was lucky she thought he was cute.
“Fine! Yes, I think you’re really attractive! Is that really such a big deal?”
Lucy heaved in a few deep breaths, chest visibly rising and falling as she felt his gaze pierce her very soul. She gulped.
That dangerous territory had certainly been breached now, and there was no turning back.
“Well, I don’t know if I’d call it a big deal,” Natsu responded with a chuckle. He crossed his arms and placed them behind his head. “I think you’re attractive, too, but you don’t see me getting all embarrassed about it.”
Lucy sputtered as her eyes almost rolled into the back of her head. In her sudden state of breathlessness, she struggled to form her words. “I—you can’t,” she tried to say. “You can’t just say that so casually!”
“Why not? Geez, Lucy. You’re acting really weird today.”
“I’m weird?” Lucy jeered. She pointed a finger at him and jabbed his chest. “You’re the one calling me attractive when we’re not a couple!”
It was truly some sort of miracle that the bandits hadn’t heard them this time.
Natsu quirked a brow. “I’m pretty sure you’re the one who said it first.”
As her mouth opened and closed with only a few strangled noises escaping her throat, Natsu laughed. He slapped a hand on her shoulder as Lucy’s cheeks puffed up once more. If they weren’t trying to stay hidden, she would have Lucy kicked him into the stratosphere by now.
She sighed, picking up the binoculars and leaning up on the boulder again. They were here to do a job. She needed to focus.
And then, so quietly Lucy almost missed it, Natsu mumbled, “But what if I want us to be a couple?”
Her head whipped to the side as her jaw dropped open. Natsu? Asking if they could be a couple? The same guy who never seemed to show any interest in romance?
But he only got that look on his face when he was serious about something. Besides, he did just admit he was attracted to her.
“I… wouldn’t be opposed to that.”
Natsu stared deeply into her eyes. “You mean that?”
She shyly nodded, inhaling a shaky breath.
Without saying another word, Natsu reached over and clasped Lucy’s hand with his own. Their fingers intertwined, slotting together perfectly. Natsu gave Lucy’s hand a small squeeze and smiled gently. It was a simple gesture, but an intimate one all the same.
She squeezed his hand in return and gave him a smile of her own.
That dangerous territory had been breached, and Lucy couldn’t be any happier about it.

In response to the recent backlash you received me and my bf started dating a few months ago and we're now engaged. The reason why I love Nalu is because I see myself in Natsu's place. I and my gf used to be besties before dating. I did almost all of the things Natsu did for her while not knowing I was in love with her. We neglected all of the possibilities of us being together because we labeled everything we did for each other as friendship and never felt the need to change that. A big reason was that we were already too much close to each other. Winter cuddling, her wearing my clothes, those forehead touches and forhead kisses, collapsing on her chest or lap after every hard day, hand holding, getting oddly jealous whenever a guy touched her or tried flirting with her and all. We did these things way often to be called just friends. You might not even believe me when I say that I had once brought a truck full of red roses in front of her house because she missed the annual rose festival due to being sick. This thing bought me and her as a Nalu shipper in the first place when we started watching the show three weeks ago. Now we're updated with the sequel as well.
When someone asks how did I even manage to get together with her, honestly it was completely unexpected. I had admitted my feelings for her in a pathetic way because I had thought I was losing her at that time and I literally screamed in the hospital in front of everyone about how I can't live without her and I didn't care whether people call it love or platonic or anything else. All I wanted was her and nothing. I was screaming that I needed her hand in mine while walking through the hardships of my life. She was passed out on the infirmary bed the whole time and she regained consciousness after a week, she was so confused as to why people were laughing at both of us and also wiping their eyes. Funny that I didn't tell her any of that until the day I mustered enough courage to even understand my own feelings. And then I got to know that she loved me all along but thought I wasn't intetested in her. The exact thing Lucy assumes. Which is why I think a lot of Natsu's actions can be interpreted as romantic.
I died.

I dreamt last night I was giving tours in our house museum and two visitors decided that they were going to sit at our dining room table. And they didn’t understand why I got so upset that they were sitting in our antique Empire Style chairs and why that was bad.
I told my co-workers and their response was, “She had the dream!”
So apparently this is a very normal?? thing around here.

What are some things you wish the general public knew about how museums operate?
Oh, anon where do I even begin?
I think I wish the public were more aware that there are many standards, ethics and laws that govern museums and how they operate, especially in regards to collecting activities. Gone are the days where museums collected things willy-nilly and thank goodness for that, but we’re still dealing with the consequences in ways that most people don’t really think about.
Most people’s first thought are of objects that might be repatriated, but there are also objects that were donated completely legally, but with no rhyme or reason, like the object happened to be old and someone said “oh the museum might want it”, and the curator at the time said “we’ll take it!” and now the museum has twenty antique wedding dresses or a bunch antique furniture, that we don’t know much about except its handmade by so and so in roughly this time period and it's hard to make an exhibit about chairs that people get excited about.
Or how permanent loans from individuals can take up valuable space and resources for something the museum doesn’t own, but is still obligated to care for because an individual made a deal with the museum way back when and they are getting basically free storage and prestige for having their object in a museum.
Conversely, there are a lot of rules and standards about deaccessioning(removing objects from museum collections), that can make it very hard to do. Deaccessioning in some circles is a dirty word. Add in the human element and petty politics of boards and donors and it can become an even slower process than it should be. Even for objects that are going to be destroyed/thrown out because they are so broken they can’t be fixed/restored or they have mold and are a threat to other collections.
The second thing I think I wish people knew is that museums are not warehouses. Just because you don’t want your grandmother’s old rocking chair doesn’t mean we do. Storage is at a premium in museums and while it might be a nice old chair, we’d probably much rather have something that your family has stories about and that you know where it came from, rather than just some old piece of furniture.
I also wish people knew that there are more jobs in the field than just curator or docent, that are just as important and just as valid. Hollywood has made the curator very glamorous, and while it is an important job, there are other jobs in museums, like business admins, development officers, operations, event staff, front of house staff, social media managers, exhibit designers, conservators, and educators that is just as important for the functioning of a museum and don’t require an MA or a PhD and loads of debt.
There are many other things I could probably talk about, but these were the first things that came to my mind.
Thanks for the question Anon!

A McDanno rec list for a new friend. (These are also authors I enjoy, so consider this a blanket rec list.)
The Bareknuckle Poet by pleasebekidding
After a serious accident left Steve temporarily wheelchair-bound, working towards his recovery, he enrolled at Rutgers for a year. He met Danny Williams in his criminology course, wearing pride pins and chipped black nail polish, so sure of himself that Steve found it breathtaking. What happened next redefined Steve's sense of self, his ambitions, and many of his priorities.
Tax Benefits by renecdote
“Everyone already assumes we’re married so maybe we should just...” Danny gestures broadly with his beer. He’s maybe a little bit… Not drunk, but definitely tipsy.
“For the tax benefits.”
Danny gives him an aggravated look. “Yes, Steven, for the tax benefits.”
Danny (jokingly) suggests they should get married. Steve takes him seriously.
ua kaha aku la ka nalu o kuu aina (the surf has pressed upon my land) by icoulddothisallday, TetrodotoxinB
Steve knows, he learned, how a man behaves. He can play his part. Danny, who is a good man and great father, looks nothing like what Steve was taught. Reconciling the two means giving up everything he's clung too for the last two decades, and there's nothing about it that's easy.
*potentially triggery AF (deals with effects of conversion therapy) but beautifully rendered
the art of leaving and saying goodbye by Verasteine
2007 is the year Danny learns that choice can be the worst kind of heartbreak. AU.
*warning for infidelity (not mcdanno)
in jest by apathyinreverie
“No, babe,” Danny shakes his head with a grin. “If the apocalypse were to go down while I’m elsewhere for some godforsaken reason, then you stay put and I’m coming to wherever you are.” His grin widens. “And I expect you to have cleared any aliens or zombies or whatever else might be messing with us off the island and to have set up a nice, comfortable military dictatorship for us to rule over by the time I get back.”
It’s a joke.
Of course it’s a joke.
Until it isn’t.
(A the-day-after-tomorrow-style apocalypse AU, where the world decides to end right when Danny is visiting one of the other islands with Grace. Because, of course, it does.)
not just friendship (romance too) by earthquakedream
Steve's gone and gotten himself a boyfriend. Danny's not sure what worse: the fact that he's stupidly jealous or that he actually likes the guy.
All I Ever Wanted (It Comes with a Price) by leviarty
Steve gets shot. Again. Danny is not okay.
* warning: a young grace shoots someone to protect both herself and a gravely injured steve
After All Our Troubles, We Have This by Banshi13
"I'm ending this," McGarrett muttered after a few moments of silence. "I'm not coming back until Wo Fat is in the ground. I'll dig his own grave and bury him myself if I have to, but my father is dead, my mother is running all over the world in hiding, my sister and I were uprooted from our lives, and now he's got Danny locked somewhere in a basement in the middle of Japan." He looked both Chin and Kono in the eye, deadly resolve in his eyes. "This ends. Now. This is the absolute last time that man interferes with my life and my family."
The Other Guy by haldoor
Danny tells Steve what he thinks is a funny story from when he attended Grace's school play. Steve doesn't think it's so funny; in fact, it makes him jealous.
Strapped by stellarmeadow
Steve's determined Danny's going to be prepared next time.
Warm to the Touch by veronicaluv
Danny didn't think twice about going to North Korea to find Steve. He just didn't know everything would go to hell when they got back.
Me and my heart (We got issues) by SquaresAreNotCircles
“I’m in love with you, Steve,” Danny says. He does it softly, quietly, laying the words into the darkness of Steve’s backyard like they’re something breakable, something to be tiptoed around. “I thought you should know.”
Steve’s heart jumps. It rams against his ribcage so hard it’s going to leave bruises. So hard he startles awake, and he almost yells before he realizes he’s outside because he fell asleep in one of the garden chairs in his backyard again.
how to be gay for your best friend in ten easy steps by commatme
See, the thing is that Danny doesn’t really do gay sex, what with being straight and all, but when Steve says I love you he sounds so earnest he makes Danny want to consider it. Which is crazy, right? He’s pretty sure that’s crazy, or at least a little unhinged.
It’s Not So Easy Caving In by paradis
The one where Danny used to be a heroin addict.
blame it on the ocean view by carryokee
Danny gives in, freaks out, and comes to his senses.
So Have I Loved You by Brumeier
In which Grace has a surprise for Steve's birthday and there's not a dry eye in the house.
take it back to a couple years yesterday by itsrosencrantz
Danny really, really doesn't want to go to his twenty year high school reunion.
Steve decides they're going anyway, and Danny takes it about as well as you'd expect.
View From The Shipwreck by flowerfan
Danny Williams isn’t in a great place – he’s a reluctant transplant to Oahu and an outsider at HPD. Former Navy SEAL Steve McGarrett isn’t doing much better, having suffered a career ending injury. When Danny’s young daughter Grace wanders into Steve’s bar after getting lost on a school field trip, Danny is drawn to Steve, somewhat against his better judgement – he’s got enough on his plate. He’s not exactly sure what Steve sees in him. As they spend more time together, Danny learns how Steve’s injury has changed his life in many ways, but not the most important ones. As one thing leads to another, Danny realizes that things might be looking up after all.
True North by lavvyan
“Tell you what, my dad’s throwing his annual Christmas Ball on Saturday. It’s not a trip to Aspen or anything, but it is nice. Fancy food and everything. You guys should come!”
On the trail of a suspected war criminal, Steve and Danny have to go undercover at a fancy ball. The sacrifices they make for the job.
Oh, and Steve's pining like the taiga. Nothing new there.
outside the lines by withoutwords
“I’m Detective Williams.” Danny says, not trying too hard to keep it smug free. “This is my partner, Detective Mackenzie.”
Ken Doll keeps his arms up, his eyes flickering between them all as if he's only seeing police for the first time. “Good cover,” he tells Danny, and it sets Danny’s teeth on edge.
“This is the part where you say sorry for assaulting a police detective, for compromising an investigation, and for acting like a complete asshole while doing it,” Danny growls, about to change his mind and cuff the guy himself.
“Sorry, Officer.”
The bastard is still grinning.
Boys Like Me, We Try Too Hard by romanticallyinept
Steve's always wound so fucking tight.
And Danny's worried about him. Legitimately worried about him. Because maybe Steve always lays into the perps a little hard, and maybe he follows his own rules and his own morals and doesn't stop to sleep unless his body's actually shutting down around him, but usually, Steve's okay at the end of the day. Usually, Steve's not leaning against the wall of the alley they're in, eyes closed and shaking, with the perp he'd cuffed a minute earlier lying on the ground and crying about his broken nose.
Steve keeps a secret, and Danny does his best to patch him back up when it comes to light.
Transformative by boxparade
“You know, I’d heard you’d changed a lot after high school, but I’ve gotta admit, this is a little weird.”
* trans (FTM) Danny
All the Way by VictoriaAGrey
Danny has lost count of how many times he and Steve have used the sexual tension between them for undercover work, only for it to be bottled away after the op is over. With Saint Michael as his witness, that ends tonight.
Nocturne in C# Minor (featuring Stevie Ray Vaughn) by minor_demimonde
So, to recap, Danny has beautiful eyes, great shoulders, a pleasantly-shaped butt, a delectable mouth, expressive hands, and he smells good.
You know, Steve has gone to bed with women who didn’t have that much going for them.
seen it in the flight of birds by Siria
AU from the beginning of Season 2. The Five-0 task force has been reinstated, but the new governor's determined to shake things up. Facing changes and unexpected betrayals, the team has to work together to face new challenges.
It Ain’t Me Babe (Nah), It Ain’t Me You’re Looking For (Babe) by tourdefierce
A story in which Danny makes lists and can't find his heterosexuality underneath all his homogay, Steve has a lot of faces, Kono is perfect in every way and Chin continues to keep Hawaii safe from the Five-O's general disfunction—Or, a story about Kono being awesome and how she likes her men with hearts in their eyes for each other.
Ratios, Decimals, and Percentages by fuchs
In which Steve takes an internet quiz and slowly loses his mind. Danny's okay with it.
Let’s Dance Like We Used To by AndreaLyn
There isn't a world in which Danny wouldn't go after Grace. So when Rachel moves the family to California, Danny goes with. Steve gets left to process life without Danny.
Gunfire, Rainfall, and Beach Erosion by thegrrrl2002
Steve and Danny are kidnapped. After which there is too much swimming and too much rain and it's all very romantic. If you are Steve, that is.
Moving In (To Every Single Aspect of Danny’s Life, Including the Boring Bits like Dry-Cleaning by westgirl
It felt wrong for Steve to sound unsure of his place in Danny’s life. His place in Danny’s life was at Danny’s side, driving him slowly insane. Steve should feel secure about that.
Always Known What I Wanted To Be by mickeysixx
Grace Williams has always wanted to be a cop.
The Taper Phase by popfly
It’s like being run over by an armored car, like the impact of gunshot to tac vest. The pride Danny feels for his daughter and something else, something about Steve’s tank top sticking to his stomach, the way his shorts stretch across his thighs. The goofy grin that lights up Steve’s face when he sees Danny and Charlie, waving one hand while he nudges Grace with the other.

Monsters ball
@thewritingstar Starsobafictober
Nalu AU ficlet part 1 of 3 (Halloween) part 2
Lambda Fairy Psi is holding their annual Monster Ball on Halloween. Everyone was dressed up as all sorts of monsters. From creepy supernatural creatures, mythical beasts of lore, even Disney villains, and of course a few half-assed costumes, but well, these are college kids after all. No one cared, it’s all about having fun on this All Hallows’ Eve!
By the time their sister sorority showed up the party was already in full swing. The music raged and disco lighting filters through every common room in the building. The frat had gone all out on food and kegs, anything else was bring you own stash.
The others girls fit right in with their Medusas, a Wednesday Adams, witches, and other typical monster costumes. But Lucy didn’t feel like going with the grain. To her the truly evil creatures were ones that you’d never see coming.
From across the room, Natsu spies the girls coming in. He’d had his eye on one of the freshman girls of Alpha Fairy Delta ever since she’d joined. Lucy was beauty and brains with a sassy wit about her. But he wasn’t alone in trying to catch this vixen. Sting Eucliffe from a rival frat gave it a shot only to be rebuffed, so did a guy named Dan who he didn’t really know other than being a football player. Loke was still trying, typical of a playboy. But he noticed that Lucy didn’t respond to direct action and played it cool. Maybe that’s why he noticed her smarts unlike the others.
“Hey Luce!” He waves her down.
“Natsu!” She skips towards him, swaying her hips in exaggerated fashion. “This party is pretty awesome!”
“Aww thanks!” He grins and brushes the non-existent dirt from his shoulder, “can’t say that I did anything,” he laughs.
She giggles at the silly remark.
“But tell me,” he looks her up and down, “you did get the memo that said Monster Ball, right?” He laughs again, “cause you don’t look like one.”
“Oh, I may not look like one,” Lucy sidles up closer with a grin, running her finger coyly along his chest. “But how do you know,” she looks up through half-lidded eyes and plumed lashes, “that I don’t have nefarious objectives?”
There’s that brain of hers at work. Leave it to this blond bombshell to dress as a black widow or something. He chuckles, “seductress? Gonna seduce me and kill me later?”
“Nah, no killing, but maybe I’ll torture you a bit,” she winks. “I’ve decided to make you my prey tonight.” Then she sashays away like those words wouldn’t leave any normal man cringing yet intrigued.
‘Ugh!’ Natsu groans in his head. If only she knew how much she was already torturing him! He licks his lips, well fine, it’s not like he had to make this easy...
Part 2 conclusion comes on Halloween 🎃 will it be sfw or nsfw 🤔 what do you think?

Hey Kae, Hope you’re doing well! If you’re taking requests, how about Nalu/Endlu “you’re mine. I don’t share” with a protective, jealous and possessive Natsu/e.n.d. who’s none too pleased that random would be suitors are bidding on that his girl (who he wants to claim for himself) for a date auction as part of a guild charity event. maybe he ends up staking his claim on Lucy With actions kissing her senseless in front of everyone and physical reminders like...
Tumblr media
Hi! I’m doing great! I hope you like this little bit. This was definitely a fun prompt (I had to do some research about Jewels and stuff. Apparently 100 Jewels is like 1 US dollar. That’s insane. And also, I hate math. So, hopefully, this all makes sense, I dunno?) Anyways! I hope you like it! :)
Nalu: You’re Mine, I Don’t Share
“I don’t know if I can do this.” The words were still branded on his mind. He couldn’t shake them. He had been going backstage to see how things were going. He hadn’t liked this whole thing, even from the very beginning. The idea that Lucy would be going out on a date with some random guy made his stomach twist into knots. But he had thought she was okay with it. He had assumed that she was fine, that she was happy to do it, for the charity auction.
“What do you mean?” Cana had asked. Natsu had been able to see them just barely around the curtains. Cana had been fixing Lucy’s hair. Lucy was wringing her hands.
          “I… I just don’t think I can do it.”
“You’ve done this sort of thing before,” Cana had said, leaning over Lucy’s shoulders to fix a pin with purls into her hair just above her ear. “Is this about Natsu?”
Natsu remembered the turmoil of emotions he had been feeling, now, standing at the stage with the whole group of men ready to bid, they only seemed multiplied.
“I can’t… I can’t get him out of my head, Cana.”
“I know, I know, Lucy. You’re in love with Natsu. When are you going to get over it and just ask him out.” Those words had hit him in the gut like Gajeel’s iron fist. He couldn’t breathe for half a moment, and then he stumbled away from the stage in a daze.
Lucy… Lucy’s in love with me.
How long had he been daydreaming about her? Since they day they had met? He wasn’t sure. He felt dizzy. The curtains were opening. The charity auction was about to begin. What am I going to do?! He knew he couldn’t let some random guy take Lucy on a date. It was preposterous.
Max stepped out on stage, “Hello, and welcome to Fairy Tail’s annual Date Auction for Charity!” There was a round of applause, and cheers. Natsu couldn’t even move. His hands were balled into fists, he was furious. I’m going to bid for her. The idea was suddenly so stuck fast in his mind, there was no way he could shake it away. I’m going to bid for Lucy, and I’m going to win her. He didn’t care how much money it took. She was his.
“The rules for bidding is simple! Bidding starts at 10,000 Jewels! Remember, this is for Charity! If you win, you get to go on a lovely date with one of the beautiful ladies of Fairy Tail!” More cheers. Yeah, yeah, get to the point.
“Let’s begin the bidding—” Natsu waited impatiently through three other biddings before Lucy stepped out onto the stage. She was gorgeous—as always. She made his knees weak, and his heart pound like crazy. But today she was even prettier. Maybe it was the way she was wearing her hair up, or the fancy pale blue dress. She looked like a princess. “Celestial Mage, Miss Lucy Heartfilia! Starting at 10,000 Jewels!”
“15,000!” Someone shouted, almost instantly. Natsu spun around to find the face, rage boiling in his chest like some sort of untamed beast.
          “18,000!” Another guy shouted.
          “20,000!”
          “25,000!”
Say something, Natsu! He could see Lucy’s brown eyes from where he stood in the middle of the crowd. She looked so pale, and anxious. Heart hammering in his chest, Natsu took a breath.
          “30,000… going once… going twice—”
          “35,000!”
“Hey, SHUT UP, all of you!” Natsu roared. A hush fell over the crowd. Lucy’s eyes widened, and her cheeks flushed as a smile touched her lips.
          “N-Natsu!”
          “I’m bidding… 80,000.”
          “E-Eighty Thousand?!”
“Eighty Thousand!” Natsu roared. He felt his cheeks burning, there was a twitch in his hands—inviting fire. He ignored it, letting his rage boil inside—silently daring anyone to try and outbid him. There were tears in Lucy’s eyes on stage, he could see them shimmering in the light.
“80,000… going once… going twice… sold to—” Before the rest of the sentence was out of Max’s mouth, Natsu was shoving his way through the crowd and onto the stage. “Um. Natsu. We don’t usually do that—”
“Natsu,” Lucy whispered. He stopped just before her, reaching out for her hands. That rage was still boiling in his chest. The rest of these guys are looking at her, watching her, imagining what they’d do with her… “You bid for me.”
“Of course, I did,” he said, and then with a surge of emotion, he leaned forward and quickly pulled her into a searing kiss. She’s mine. She’s mine, and I want everyone to know. He deepened the kiss, running his fingers through her hair, breathing in the scent of her perfume: cherry blossoms and summer rain. He leaned forward, tilting her back, she wrapped her arms around her shoulders. They were so close he could almost feel her heart pounding in time with his. When he pulled away Lucy’s face was bright red, her eyes half-lidded.
          “W-what…?”
“You’re mine. I don’t share,” he whispered. Her eyes widened, and her cheeks flushed an even deeper red.
          “N-Natsu—”
The crowd was cheering, maybe they were hoping for the same experience with the girls they won in the auction. All of these girls can kick your ass. Natsu almost laughed at the thought, but he was relieved to know that Lucy wasn’t one of the ones who might have to. You’re safe. You’re with me. That’s all that matters.
Thanks for reading!
Buy me a coffee? :)

NALU Witch AU pt. 1: “Unleashed.”
Lucy is risking her life to complete the task assigned to her through her bloodline, but the ritual goes awry, and a dangerous entity is unleashed from its bindings.
Lucy shoots a cautious look over her shoulder and tightens her grip on the outline of her keys hanging off her belt, covered by her thick, black coat. There was nothing - and nobody - there but over the years, some of the more observant locals would no doubt remember a hooded figure who only appeared on one, singular day every year. That sort of attention could (and would) cost her life.
Nobody liked witches, after all.
The warmth of her keys against her thigh, although covered by her skirt’s fabric, was a reassuring sensation that helped soothe some of her anxiety. It wasn’t much, considering Lucy had willingly entered Fiore’s most prominent witch-hunting town - Hargeon.
Lucy kept to the shadows, hurrying through the alleyway as close to the stone wall as the space would allow. The candlelight from a window overheard flickered as she swept past, the fire reacting to the power under her skin. It burned brighter, the element pulling on her magic greedily, and Lucy hastily severed the connection.
Her mind had been so occupied with her thoughts that she’d let her magic flow free. A rookie mistake. Lucy could hear her coven's elders scoldings ring in her ears as she tugged her coat tighter around her body in an attempt to ward off the chill permeating in the air.
Lucy spared the candle one last glance as she turned the corner. Hopefully, the owners hadn’t seen the brief change because she’d be in trouble otherwise… All the locals in this town were educated on how to spot any form of magic, whether it was a faint link or otherwise.
This was something Lucy knew very, very well.
Lucy made sure to keep her magic under lock and key as she slipped into another alleyway, scurrying past the main road quickly. It may be nearing midnight and the townsfolk were tucked safely in their beds, but the main roads were still dangerous. Hargeon was a suspicious town filled to the brim with superstitions and stories of witches cackling in the night. Lucy didn’t want to take even take the risk for fear of being spotted.
A hooded figure rushing through the town late at night screamed witch, according to Hargeon’s logic.
Lucy hastened her pace as the edge of the forest came into view, relief flooding every cell in her body. She’d be much safer in the forest and be able to move more freely, compared to the way she had to sneak through the town.
The forest would protect her.
Her magic pulsed under her skin as she sidestepped a wayward crate, pace close to an almost-sprint, ready to let the thick branches and greenery envelop her.
If anyone did spot her, Lucy would be safe once she crossed over the edge. She just needed to get there. C’mon, c'mon...
A strange sense of foreboding filled her as her magic started to crawl within her body, whispering in her ear as gusts of wind grabbed hold of her hood and pushed it down.
“HEY!”
Lucy started, tripping over herself in surprise. She snapped her head towards the angry voice, pushing herself up from the concrete. The wind, although aggravated, gently caressed her golden hair so that the strands created a sort of halo-looking effect around her pale face.
Lucy cursed, snatched her hood over her head and scrambled back to her feet. “OI!” The man hobbling over to her shouted, raising his fist in the air. “Do ya realise what time of night it is? Who are ya -”
Lucy sprinted towards the forest, who had its branches already open to welcome her. The man shouted once more but over the roar of the wind against her ears, his words were drowned out. Her heart pounded loudly against her chest, her legs burning with the effort of her sprint.
Why now? When she was so close? He’d also seen her face. Lucy tried to stamp it down but the panic continued to bubble up, her throat starting to close up and making difficult to breathe.
Lucy’s hold over her magic quickly spiralled, mind too full of fear and run, run, run to maintain the concentration. The wind around her slapped against her skin, sending mini tornadoes created of dust, dirt, and leaves, empowered through her magic’s tether.
She could just hear her pursuers’ alarmed shout as he realised that magic had just taken place. Lucy heard heavy thuds of boots hitting concrete, sounding the arrival of more men woken from the frenzied shouts of witch! witch! witch! over the roaring wind.
Panic seized her heart as the ding of the bell in town square echoed throughout Hargeon. It rang and rang, causing the whole town to wake from its deep slumber and form an angry, raging mob.
There were screaming and shouting and Lucy knew that numerous torches had been lit by the way the element searched out her magic and pulled. The heavy hold that Lucy generally had on her magic was almost non-existent – letting the power go wild – due to her panic.
The fire drained her and the wind was violent around her, both intoxicated by the pulsing of the magic running through her veins. Her eyes stung with unshed tears and the sharp bite of the wind but the witch just blinked the pain away.
Lucy ignored the burn in her legs as she pushed herself to go faster. C’mon, c’mon. The forest was just a couple more steps away...
A hand snagged on her ankle and pulled hard.
Lucy fell with a cry, temple knocking against the soft earth while her ankle screamed from being yanked nearly out of its socket. She was certain something had been damaged. Her head pounded as she pushed herself up by her elbows, kicking at the hand still latched onto her ankle with her uninjured foot.
Her heel hit flesh with a resounding crack and the person who had grabbed her let go with a shout of pain. Not one to waste any time, Lucy scrambled to her feet once more, wincing at the sharp pain that shot up her leg. Thankfully, the man who had managed to grab her was still reeling from the feisty kick to his nose, so even whilst half limping she managed to get away.
Lucy almost cried when the branches swallowed her frame, protecting her from the angry mob aching to put her head on a spike.
The townsfolk wouldn’t dare venture into Flamevien forest. It was considered a dark blight against Hargeon’s reputation, a place wrought with evil and magic. Not even the bravest of men would risk stepping a single toe over the edge, for fear of being dragged into its depths and swallowed whole.
Flamevien was alive with magic, yes, but not evil. Never evil... although many considered the two to go hand-in-hand.
Lucy rested her palm against a burly tree trunk, ignoring her throbbing ankle as she tried to catch her breath. The forest was silent around her, its magic gently caressing her skin as comfort. Her own magic was vibrating under her skin and she furiously stamped it down.
Oh, how disappointed her master would be. She’d lost control so easily – it was like she had been reduced to a mere fledging once again – blinded by her panic and fear. She was nearly finished with her apprenticeship but no doubt this mess would force her progress back. A witch should never, under any circumstances, let her magic run rampant. A witch’s control must be like iron shackles, binding down the power until it is allowed to draw on the elements.
Her supposed ‘iron shackles’ had been reduced to mere string bindings, tearing apart with a single tug. Some witch she was...
Lucy had also caused the whole town to erupt into a frenzied, witch-hunting rage.
When word got back to the coven, Lucy would be in deep trouble. She’d be peeling the special moss for herb lessons for months. Lucy mourned the future of her currently clean fingernails - they’d be stained for long after that punishment ended.
The forest shielded her from the mob outside but did not keep their vengeful cries from her ears. The air reeked of smoke and she could still feel the element trying to reach her, although it was a fruitless effort, since Lucy had her control back. There was no way she was going to let it slip through her fingers again.
The townsfolk cursed, raged, and threatened her. Lucy shivered at some of the insults they directed at her… Fortunately, she was safe as long as she resided in the forest.
The difficult part would be getting out of Hargeon. Flamevien was surrounded by water on the outskirts - a product of the power it held - and the way she came was a one-way ticket. The people of Hargeon knew that and so they would wait for her… The prospect of burning another witch at the stake? Hargoen relished in it. Burning witches were considered acts of glory and brought great honour upon those who had managed such a task.
Lucy held her head in her hands, crouching down and rested her elbows on her knees, a heavy cloud of despair hanging above her.
How was she going to get out of this mess?
Lucy focused on her breathing to re-centre her soul. Inhale, exhale. Eventually, her hands stopped shaking enough that she was fairly confident she could finally get to what she had come to this wretched town for.
Lucy stood up and dusted off her knees and the back of her coat, rolling her shoulders and stared ahead with determination. She’d figure out what to do later. Now, though, she had a witch duty to complete.
The forest buzzed to life in time with her new resolution. Lucy watched as a cat with blue fur ran past, smiling mischievously in her direction. It disappeared as quickly as it came, blue body faintly transparent and flickering.
A spirit.
Lucy watched its tail vanish into the shrubbery before making her way through the familiar path. To the untrained eye, it was just a collection of thick, intertwined trees and vines but to a witch who had travelled to Flamevien annually for about six years, it was as easy to spot as the path to her own home.
Her ankle throbbed painfully and Lucy let her magic gather around the wound, soothing some of the aches. It wouldn’t do much nor would it last for long – healing magic was more Wendy’s forte than hers – but it would do for now.
Lucy followed the path, climbing over the tangled roots and pushing aside thorny branches. She only had to walk for a few minutes before a clearing appeared, her destination located in the very center.
Lucy couldn’t help the smile that tugged at her lips when her eyes rested on the house. It was an old, rickety thing so bent out of shape that just looking at it sends alarm bells ringing. The walls were cracked, torn down in some areas, allowing a free view into the interior. It was leaning a little too much to the left to be entirely safe, and thick vines clung to the stone.
It was an ominous looking house, with an aura exuding danger, and Lucy couldn’t help but be immensely comforted by it.
The magic residing in the house spiked at her presence, making leaves near the broken porch fly up and greet her, swirling around her head. Lucy let out a giggle.
“It’s good to see you, too.” Lucy smiled and made her way up the porch, avoiding the loose step. The door swung open at her approach, sending a spider crafting a web on the handle tumbling to the floor.
The inside of the house was as decrepit as the exterior, if not worse. It reeked of dust and dirt, making Lucy crinkle her nose in protest of the stench. Lucy expertly dodged the cracks and openings in the floorboards without having to put too much thought to it, used to the house’s weak spots after so many years of walking upon these very boards.
She could feel the house’s anticipation palpitating as she neared what was once the living room. It was where she would reside for the next hour, channeling her magic.
The living room was admittedly the most intact area of the entire house, although not by much. Cobwebs hung from every crevice and Lucy winced at the sound of rats scurrying away, startled by her presence. There was a large magic circle on the floorboards, staining the wood due to the repeated use of Witch’s Chalk over the years. She’d have to redraw it...
The candles littering the floor spontaneously lit up as she stepped foot into the room, passing through the open arch doorway. They were in exactly the same place as Lucy had last left them the year before. She gave a little flick of her finger and every second candle shot up in the air, bobbing in place, the light illuminating the dark space.
Lucy took a breath and unbuttoned her coat, shrugging it off. She gently draped it over a dusty armchair (it would need a thorough wash once she got home) and grabbed hold of her keys.
Most of her coven didn’t understand why she risked being exposed as a witch, and in turn, her life. Her annual trip here was something Lucy didn’t have a choice in – something the witches back home would likely never understand.
A witch’s duty was sacred (they all knew that) but this was Lucy’s. Nobody but Lucy could complete this task, and she would do so until eventually, the magic toll became too much, effectively ending her life.
Like her ancestors before her.
Lucy understood the risks. The ritual took more from her magic, soul and body as the years went on. It would become harder to continue, the toll ultimately becoming too much for her to bear. The house and Flamevien would suck up her power like a greedy leech until she had nothing left.
But she would do it. Lucy had to do it.
This was the secret that she kept from her coven. They would forbid her from coming, angered by her ‘foolish desire to continue her family legacy’.
This duty was a death sentence and Lucy would see it done until the very end.
Lucy let out a sigh, rubbing her eyes tiredly as if the action could erase her thoughts. Now was not the time to slip down that road. Her focus needed to be strong, her magic stable, and her soul open.
Lucy knelt down next to the lone armchair, pushing the molding furniture back slightly. She grimaced at the feel of thick dust bunnies coating her fingers but continued to search for the weak spot in the wooden floorboard, listening for the tell-tale sound of hollow wood. With a triumphant cry, Lucy curled her fingers over the small hole, cracking open the hidden space.
The witch stuck her free hand down the opening, fumbling through the items she’d stashed within it over the years, feeling for a particular object.
Once she found it, Lucy pulled her hand back and let the floorboard fall back into place. She wiped her hand against her skirt and uncurled her first, revealing an (albeit dusty) elongated piece of white chalk. It was getting a little cracked due to use so she set a reminder for herself to go purchase another one for next year.
Lucy redrew the magic circle, eyes narrowed with concentration, grateful that her hands were no longer shaking. Each line had to be precise. Anything that didn’t connect or wasn’t shaped right would undo the entire process, and she’d have to erase it.
Luckily, Lucy’s hands knew this magic circle by pure muscle memory. Redrawing the symbol was methodical and somewhat relaxing, effectively easing any leftover tension coiled in her gut.
Once she was done, Lucy stood back to admire her handiwork and ensure there were no faults. Thankfully, it was exactly as it should be...
Lucy took a deep breath and folded her legs underneath her, sitting in the centre of the newly drawn circle.
It was time.
Lucy slowly cracked the lid on her magic, letting the power willingly flow through her veins. It wanted to rush out, eager to create havoc and spread like wildfire, but Lucy kept it to a mere trickle so the space wouldn’t be overwhelmed. Exhaustion lurked in her weary limbs, the out pour of magic combined with her earlier exertion, made it rather difficult to keep her eyes open. Lucy shook off the feeling. This was a difficult spell and being tired would only cause complications that she couldn’t afford.
The air around her was thick with the intensity of her magic paired with the house (and the forest by extension), causing her hair to float around her head. Her eyes began to glow golden while her skin adopted an ethereal hue.
When she spoke, her voice echoed with the sound of a hundred dead witches, all combining their power. “Spirit of old, let us beg for forgiveness. Let it be our blood that seals the first love.”
A gust wind began to pick up despite being inside, forming a transparent tornado that circled around her, sparking with golden strains of magic. The candles were fixated in place through magic and the flames refused to die out, undisturbed by the violent element.
“Of bounds and shackles, we tether thy to this plane. For our power shall entrance the King, of golden ties and a forgotten caress.” As Lucy chanted, the spirits of her ancestors began to take form just inside the rim of the magic circle. As each one took shape, they joined hands and began to chant. They flickered with each burst of magic, transparent, but held strong as they performed the ritual with her.
“Let us bind you. We tether thy to this plane.” A hundred and one witches’ voices shouted into the space, emotionless and fixated. The circle written in chalk began to glow underneath her, the magical properties reacting to the pure, unadulterated force crackling in the space.
“Demon of old, may you rest until the night where the stars intertwine.” Lucy’s mind was not her own. The magic tied her soul intricately with her ancestors, making her feel their pain. Their desperation. If not for the haze, Lucy would be writhing in torment at the sensation of her one hundred souls being crammed into her body.
Heat began to spread, the moisture in the air hissing with steam... That was new. The candle’s flames roared to life, expanding twice the size of a normal fire. Lucy felt a piece of herself break as fire travelled around the circle, growing hotter as each second passed. It was blocked by the rim, unable to cross over, so it only grew taller until it completely surrounded her, blocking her view of anything but the element.
That wasn’t supposed to happen. The fire element had never reacted this way. The haze over her eyes began to crack due to the bubbling panic - this shouldn’t be happening. The spirits of her ancestors screamed at her, sensing the disturbance.
Pure agony ripped through her body as Lucy regained some of her awareness. “Stop,” she gasped. “Please stop.”
The witches only chanted louder, voices meshing with each other to create a mindless hum. Lucy’s hand twitched, the only visible sign of her pain. Her body was being controlled by the spirits.
“STOP!” The young witch screamed, voice hoarse from misuse. Her pleas went unanswered.
Lucy could only sob, unable do anything. Pain laced through her veins as more magic was drawn from her, making her soul writhe and shake. It was as if she was being torn apart by the very seams.
The fire slowed at the screams tearing from her throat, the tips reaching for her but was blocked by the magic circle’s barrier. It slammed against it in a desperate need to get to her, but the barrier was impenetrable, and the element became even angrier than before.
What was going on? Lucy had never seen anything like it. She’d been doing the ritual for years – and had been watching it be performed by her mother since she was a little girl. This was an entirely new development that had never occurred before. Had she done something wrong during the preparation – no, that couldn’t be it. She’d had gone through the ritual the same as she did every year.
The spirits around her continued to repeat the spell, withdrawing more magic at each spoken word. It didn’t matter that she no longer chanted alongside them and that terrified the young witch. Under no circumstances should the spell’s binding words halt, otherwise the ritual would render defective and volatile. That was the first lesson instilled in her by her mother. Her words were what gave her ancestors a tether to the living realm, allowing the connection to be formed through her magic. They weren’t supposed to be able to take control like this – they shouldn’t be able to take control.
Tears gathered in her eyes, dripping down her cheeks, the only other sign that she still had a tiny sliver of control over her body. Something had gone very, very wrong. Lucy tried to fight the spirits’ but one, young witch couldn’t stand her own against one hundred experienced witches whose only purpose was to see this duty completed, even in death.
One hundred pairs of glowing eyes bore into her and if Lucy’s body was her own once again, she would’ve shivered at the intensity. Her soul was flickering and that was shown as the witches’ visibility grew more transparent, the tether binding them to the realm stretching thin.
Lucy was running out of magic.
She would’ve collapsed in relief at this if she could. Under normal circumstances, Lucy would’ve been frantic, terrified out of her mind at how low her magic stores were becoming. A witch cannot survive without magic – the loss was going to kill her. However, Lucy couldn’t bring herself to care in this very moment. The pain igniting in every nerve in her body was pure agony, and she was so, so scared.
Lucy just wanted it to end.
The witches could sense how little magic she had left and continued the spell with more urgency. The fire element continued to circle around the rim, crackling and hissing as more magic poured into the space, pushing against the barrier.
Her limbs were straining with effort to rise but the young woman refused to let them, gathering all her strength to resist the spirit’s will. She had little strength left to begin with and after a few seconds of struggling, the battle was over. Lucy felt another piece of her break as her last shred of ownership over her body was given to the witches. Lucy could only watch in horror as the witches forced her arms to lift in front of her, palms upturned to the ceiling. A pinprick of blood appeared in the center of both her palms. An invisible entity cut a thin line across her skin from both sides of the original speck of blood, digging deeper as it went on. Once a substantial amount of blood was drawn, her fists clenched, letting the liquid drip down onto the magic circle.
Blood magic.
Lucy screamed but her voice no longer belonged to her so only the spell’s words escaped her throat, which only made her panic grow more intense. There was nothing she could do to stop this. Blood magic was prohibited, outlawed long before her time. It was a dangerous practice that had unseeable consequences – why were they making her do this? More blood splattered on the floorboards, drawn to the magical properties of the Witch’s Chalk. It travelled across the bare wood and reached each line, seeping into the white chalk and staining it red.
The magic buzzed in anticipation as the spell grew closer to the end. The entire room exploded in golden light, enveloping both her form and the witches circled around her. The light burned her eyes but she could not close them.
“Let it be our blood that seals you until the first love returns.”
Uttering the last verse drained her entirely. The candles in the air immediately went out and dropped, falling to the floor with a muted thud. The circle of fire vanished within mere seconds, and it would’ve been like the element was never there if not for the black scorch marks as a permanent reminder.
The spirits hold over her snapped and Lucy collapsed sideways, thoroughly spent by the ritual. Her head hit the floorboards with a thump and her entire body twitched as the spirits were severed from her soul one-by-one. Every single one of them looked relieved and worn out, but only a few gave her mournful gazes and guilty glances. Lucy watched them disappear until the very last spirit remained.
Mother.
The spirit of Layla Heartfilia looked upon her daughter, eyes shining with unshed tears. My precious star, her mother’s voice rang through her head, I knew it would be you that set us free. Lucy’s breath stopped at the familiar, loving tone that she had not heard for many years. Tears fell freely from Lucy’s eyes but she could not manage to open her mouth to call for her mother.
No, she wanted to shout as her mother’s form flickered. Please don’t leave me. Layla only shook her head, strands of hair falling from her bun. A sad, smile and a single tear trailing down her cheek were the last thing Lucy saw before her mother disappeared, soul floating towards the stars to join them.
Lucy openly sobbed, body shaking, as her own soul was drained of life. Everything hurt and Lucy just wanted to be back in her mother’s embrace, the familiar warmth to comfort her, as if she were a child again. Her eyes began to close, becoming half-lidded as Lucy slipped further into the hazy black.
A hint of steam rose from in front of her and her eyes were drawn to it, fighting off the sleep threatening to drag her under. What was happening? Magma soon replaced the steam, growing in size as her chest shuddered with each deep breath. It grew and grew, rising upwards. Lucy could only watch in her half-unconscious state as the substance began to take a humanoid form, hissing and gurgling.
Was this what the witches wanted?
The temperature spiked, waves of visible heat emanating off... whatever it was. Soon the matter began to crack, revealing tanned flesh, black specks of ash cascading towards the ground. A loud, deep groan sounded from the monster as pink lips were revealed. A pointed tongue swiped across the lips, revealing sharp, canine teeth. More cracks appeared but, from her angle, Lucy could not see above the being’s mouth.
Red scales glinted through the openings but they were only on one side of the being’s body, melting with its skin. There was a loud whoosh and a dark shadow hung behind it, but no matter how much she strained her eyes, Lucy couldn’t make out what the shadow was.
Lucy stopped breathing as the being crouched down, the transformation apparently finished, allowing her to see its face.
A shock of pink, messy hair appeared in her vision with a thick, sharp horn protruding out of one side of its head.
Demon.
Lucy’s heart seized as she registered what the spirits had just unleashed. Her vision began to blur as the face moved closer and Lucy tried to blink to clear it but it only worsened. His head tilted, the whites of his teeth baring at her through his elated grin. The demon rested his elbows on his knees as he stretched his neck, the motion making a loud crack.
“Ah,” the demon’s voice made goose bumps form on her skin, sending shivers down her spine. “Finally.”

Operation Get the Girl Chapter 1
(Please read the entire description if you haven't, it really gives a lot of information you need to know in order for this story to make sense.)
The Fairy Tail annual ball quickly approached. This was the one time that all the members of Fairy Tail got serious when it came to partying. The Ball was in remembrance of all past achievements and failures of Fairy Tail ever since the day it was founded. It wasn't taken lightly; people only asked others to this ball when they had romantic feelings for the other, unlike other dances and parties Fairy Tail hosted throughout the year, where people commonly went as friends. Tradition was to immediately alert the entire guild once one has been asked in a way of showing that they are no longer available.
Natsu Dragneel sat on one of the stools in the bar thinking circling his fingers around his empty glass. It was 11:00 p.m., and the guild hall was practically empty except for Mira and the Master, who was in his office. The young 14 year old boy was conflicted. He wanted to ask his crush to the ball, but he was terrified of rejection, or worse, losing his friendship with her. Lucy Heartfilia, even at the age of 13, was a beautiful teen with a gorgeous figure. Her personality was even better than her looks. If he didn't ask her soon, someone for sure would beat him to it.
"Anything on your mind, Natsu?"
Natsu sat in silence as Mira continued to wipe down the table in front of him.
"Natsu, you can talk to me." Mira said warmly while putting the cloth down. "It's about Lucy, isn't it?"
Natsu gulped. He knew he couldn't keep a secret from Mira, or Erza. The girls were too clever for their own good.
"Yeah, it's Lucy." Natsu sighed while looking dejectedly at his glass. "I...I wanna ask her to the ball." He quietly murmured.
"I knew it! I just knew it!" Mira squealed in delight. "Oh, you and Lucy would be so cute! Hold up, give me a second." Mira thought hard for a quick 4 seconds then screeched, "Nalu! I ship Nalu!"
"Mira, could you calm down?" Natsu exclaimed while blushing. "What if someone hears?"
"Someone like who? This place is empty."
"I don't know, just someone." Natsu looked away while blushing, and Mira fawned at how flustered the boy was from thinking about his crush.
"How long have you liked Lucy?"
"A little over two years."
Mira paused. "And you didn't say anything?"
"I was scared." Replied Natsu. "Still am." He said with a dry chuckle. Mira looked at him with pity, seeing a boy hopelessly in love with his friend and didn't have a clue on what to do about it.
"You act like she already rejected you! I'll help you out." She smiled brightly. "Operation Get The Girl is a go!

                                        Chapter Eight: Down and Dirty
                                                           o-o-o
“I know you’re here.”
Natsu’s eyes narrowed as if he were solving a math equation, staring down the numbers before waiting for the answer to jump out at him, not because he didn’t know how to solve said equation, but because he needed to see the bigger picture before he could submit his answer. Then again, he’d never taken a math test in his life, let alone written anything down on a piece of paper. Igneel had learned that Natsu’s tactile approach on everyday demeanors also applied to teaching the kid math through pebbles and twigs, and sometimes even berries he’d pluck off of bushes and pop right into Natsu’s mouth as a reward. Even Makarov never sat Natsu down and made him take written tests like the others, knowing he’d just get bored and set his paper on fire.
No, he prefered a more hands on approach to handling the problems that faced him, or rather, the problems that currently hid from him.
Natsu grinned as he stared as the restless body of water in front of him. His eyes traced the waves enthusiastically as adrenaline pumped through his veins. Never in his life had Natsu been so genuinely excited about water.
“Ne, Natsu?” Happy chirped next to him, frowning down at the water, cautiously keeping his paws away from the parts of the cobblestone path that were a dark gray shade from being damp. “We’ve been here for a while now...don’t you think that we would’ve found Lucy by now?”
Natsu looked down at his blue partner beside his feet before bending down and scratching him softly between his ears. “If it were anyone but Lucy, I’d agree with you Buddy.” Natsu told him, his eyes scanning the water slowly.
Everything had clicked when he ran into Bixslow and Freed, of course it wasn’t Juvia who soaked them to the brim with a giant wave. That wasn’t true to her style anyway, and if it were her, she would’ve sent the two swimming into the next town, not purposely of course. He knew just as well that Lucy had the capacity to do the same, but she wouldn’t do that to anyone in Fairy Tail, other than himself maybe. And it was absolutely uncanny of the blonde to help out a teammate in need, like helping Lisanna escape from Natsu’s teammates so that they could keep one of their own in the game.
“I know you’re here Lucy!” Natsu grinned, raising his right arm and swiftly brushing his fingers through his spiky pink locks, the heat of the dying sun locked onto his hair and spreading across his palm.
The water released a metallic smell that filled Natsu’s nose, leaving an unappealing taste on his tongue. He’d always resented walking next to this part of the river, and he could put all the blame on the smell alone; the perfect spot for many to throw jewel coins into the river and make useless wishes for future love or more money, which seemed so counterproductive to Natsu since the dummies were throwing money away to wish for more money. He couldn’t fathom what sense that made to anyone, with all the money that was glittering below the slow rushing water he could buy himself an exotic pet, like a lizard that breathed fire or even a five course meal that could satisfy him for days. Lucy, however, had scoffed at his statements of the wasteful money at first, believing in the fun of making wishes and throwing the coins in the water when the two of them had stopped for a snack at the bakery near the famous money wasting spot once after a job. Natsu wasn’t a huge sweet tooth, but the owner of the bakery enjoyed whenever Natsu came by ever since he’d scared off a man trying to rob the place once upon a time. He was so appreciative that he’d even developed a special recipe for cake that involved hot sauce mixed into the butter cream frosting and hot tamale candies baked into the batter. Natsu had told her she was nuts, nuttier than the chunks of almonds that were baked into the slice of cake that sat on her plate. She’d rolled her eyes at him, and looked out towards a couple holding hands and throwing multiple coins in the river. Natsu openly smirked at her when her eyes soon began to narrow, her eyebrow twitching in annoyance as another couple began to throw multiple coins into the water, followed by one small child taking an entire coin purse and turning it over so that her coins fell into the water with a giant splash, exclaiming to her mother that she’d have extra luck in making her wish come true if she used more coins. Lucy swallowed harshly, closing her eyes and reaching for her cup of tea.
Later that night, Natsu had knocked on her window and the two exchanged silent eye contact through the glass for a good ten seconds, before Lucy reached down to open it for him.
“I’ll get my coat.”
They hadn’t stopped sifting through the dirt caked on the bottom of the river until they’d picked out every coin they could find. Lucy had contracted a bad cold after their night of coin diving, but she’d treated herself by buying a new sweater with the jewel she’d acquired.
Natsu smirked at the memory, glancing down at the new coins that shone beneath the water as he walked by. They’d have to have another dive session soon.
Natsu stopped in his tracks, the thought of the water rushing through his mind and turning the wheels in his head. He bit down on his cheek inside his mouth, tasting even more of the scents of the coins before an idea burned brightly into his mind, a grin spreading across his face slowly.
“Happy,” Natsu began kneeling down onto the ground and looking to his partner “I’m gonna need ya to fly up high for me.”
The Exceed frowned at the Dragon Slayer “Huh?” he chirped “What for?”
Natsu laughed, stretching his right hand over the water next to him as he felt the fabric of his pants near his knee dampen. Images of a soaking wet Freed and Bixslow swam through his mind as his fingers inched closer to the water below. The liquid danced teasingly beneath his palm as Lucy’s face sparkled its way into his psyche next, making him grin mischievously as he felt the blood in his veins begin to simmer, shooting down into his hand. A slight steam began to rise up from the top of the water, tickling his skin as it left small drops of water to cling onto his muscles.
The dragonslayer grinned. “It’s gonna get hot.”
Happy sprouted his wings and let himself levitate a few feet above the water, eagerly waiting for Natsu to give him the signal to increase his height.
If Lucy wasn’t gonna come out of her watery hiding spot, he’d just have to make her. Plain and simple.
But then again, it was never that way with the two of them.
“Na-” Happy could barely exclaim before water spurted out from the river at lightning speed, directly at the Exceed. Natsu’s ears were filled with mixed sounds of rushing water and Happy’s cry of surprise as he watched his blue friend be launched across the golden sky, his little voice growing fainter and fainter as the jet of water rained down upon Natsu, dampening his hair and making it stick down flat to his temples.
“Happy!” Natsu exclaimed, motioning to hop up from his kneeling position before something cold and wet wrapped itself around his right arm, slamming him back onto the cobblestones, a sharp pain shooting up his knee. He gritted his teeth as he saw the water wrap around his arm like a vice, squeezing his arm tightly and leaving it numb. His eyes widened as he felt it pull him more and more into the river, the force immensely strong, as if a weight were on the other side. He growled a low growl of frustration, as the water had made its way up and above his elbow and clamped down onto his shoulder. He fought the liquid, pressing his feet onto the cobblestones and straining to stand up straight.
“Damn it!” he cursed to himself as he struggled to make a fist with his submerged hand. He felt the muscles in his arm strain as he saw small bubbles beginning to fill the water around his arm. He gritted his teeth even harder as steam began to rise from his arm, sweat dripping down his temple as he struggled to figure out why the water hadn’t evaporated away.
However, he didn’t have much time to dwindle on that fact, as his ears picked up on the sound of another jet of water shooting out of the river and this time, wrapping itself around his torso and neck. He coughed violently as the water hardened around him like a vice, and before he could even blink, he was swept off of the cobblestones and was dragged into the cold water, bubbles rushing into his vision and filling his ears. He grimaced as he tasted the metallic undertones of the water, a few coins lightly slapping his calves as he opened his blazing eyes to see nothing but dark blue depth up ahead.
Not bad he thought to himself briefly before his lungs suddenly were able to take in oxygen, his head breaking the surface of the water. He panted slightly as he felt his arms stiffen against his sides, the water around him feeling sort of like the jelly Mira spread on his toast at the guild.
“Sorry for the roughness.” a familiar voice apologized to him as he swiftly directed his attention towards it, eyes blurred and irritated from the water. “But I can’t have you evaporating the river on me like that.”
Lucy always had a certain way of showing everybody up, and he couldn’t understand how she did it each and every time. Whether it was opening the front doors of the guild and swinging her hips slightly as she walked in or even when she brushed her hair behind her shoulders as she doused a piece of paper with words from her pen, she always managed to stand out.
And seeing her in that moment was no exception.
She was like a fairy, balancing atop the rushing water as if it were solid ground, small droplets of water floating around her arms and legs. Her peach skin was almost tinted a darker orange with the sunset, making her blonde hair appear extra gold; it swished behind her shoulders in the wind, the red tie in her hair moving along with it.
She looked out into the distance with an embarrassed grin. “I’ll have to get Happy some really delicious fish after this. I didn’t mean to send him flying to the next town.”
Natsu spit some water out of his mouth and grinned at her. “What? And I don’t get an apology?”
Lucy’s eyes met his, and her sheepish grin turned into a confident one. She had a familiar twinkle in her eyes. “You’ve had this coming to you for a while now.”
“Tsk.” he shook his head. “I’m hurt.”
Natsu looked her up and down, her attire completely changed from the similar uniform look the girls’ team had donned. It wasn’t like he’d never seen her like this before, in fact it was the same outfit she’d produced in his memory of refilling the lake at the park. His eyes traced the long black zig-zagged line across her chest, the yellow and green straps of her bikini top overlapping them on her collarbone. The only difference that he could spot in her appearance was the suspicious red flag tucked into the side of her skirt. But yet, he felt that there was something else he was missing, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
“You’re not getting this from me.” she locked eyes with him as he looked up at her, her fingertips brushing the fabric lightly. “Not if I, nor the sun, has anything to say about it.”
She took a step towards him, ripples of water spreading out in lethargic circles as her slow gait brought her closer and closer to Natsu. He narrowed his eyes as she looked down on him with the utmost satisfaction. It added a small blush to her cheeks, brightening up her complexion a little, almost the same shade as the small amounts of pink painted across the sherbert sky. Hell, it even made her eyes more pronounced, bringing out that exciting spark that ignited her pupils whenever she was determined to do something.
He’d secretly always liked that spark. It reminded him of why she was his partner, why they picked each other.
He felt his mouth curl upwards in a smirk, and she stopped in her footsteps, frowning skeptically as he felt the water pressure around him tighten. This only made him chuckle softly, watching as his partner stared him down with a sour suspicion painted all over her face.
“It’s a good thing that I don’t give a crap about what the sun has to say.” he told her as-a-matter-of-factly.
He felt a delicious and familiar power boil through his veins, rushing down into his toes and fingertips. When he felt the bubbles begin to pop on his skin, his smirk transformed into a wide grin as he watched Lucy’s eyes widen in horror.
“Now I’m really fired up.”
And in just a flash, the river would be as well.
o-o-o
Lucy felt the heat on her face before she could even process what was about to happen. Her lips parted slightly, though her voice would not yield to her desire to use it as she watched the bubbles form rapidly around Natsu, popping like popcorn. The water around them began to stir uneasily, splashing against her feet and hitting her exposed skin where her sandals didn’t cover her completely. Her stomach dropped when she realized that the water was extremely warm, almost hot.
She looked into Natsu’s mischevous eyes, and her stomach dropped to her feet.
She’d wasted too much time.
A sudden roaring of boiling water filled her ears as hot steam blew all around her, stinging her eyes and making them water, making her gasp in surprise. Losing her footing, she fell backwards onto her butt, her Aquarius Stardress allowing her to remain above the water rather than falling into it. It took only a few more seconds before she felt herself sinking into the mud and stones that lingered below the once full river. She watched in horror as the steam continued to billow around her, frizzing up the ends of her hair and making sweat drip down her temples. She bit down on the inside of her cheek in frustration. What else did she expect from Natsu? He’d pulled a stunt like this before afterall, so she didn’t understand what logic in her brain told her that she would be able to hold him with her constricting currents. She glanced upwards at the sky, squinting through the steam. She could at least be relieved that Happy was out of the picture for the moment, the poor exceed probably draped over a tree branch with the wind knocked out of him, she’d make sure to give her apologies to the cat the next time she saw him.
The mud beneath her began to suction her more securely into its surface, and she grunted as she plunged her feet into the ground and clenched her fists, pushing herself up out of the mud, her fingers brushing against some coins as she did so. She let out an annoyed tsk as she wiped the mud off of her hands and onto her legs, shuddering as she tried to convince herself that she was at that spa in Bellea and the mud was just a moisturizing mask that would make her skin glisten.
She gritted her teeth and swiped off a piece of mud from her cheek and she looked ahead of her, the steam still billowing around her, shielding Natsu from her vision, and her from Natsu’s she soon came to realize.
This might be my only chance to turn things around she thought to herself as she closed her eyes and let her Stardress fade from her body with a swift flash of glitter. She reached upwards and tightened her ponytail, paying no mind to the small bits of mudd she felt caked onto her hair, it was the least of her worries.
Her fingers brushed against the sturdy keys attached to her hip, and she swiftly drew one from the keyring, her eyes quickly sweeping over the symbol on the top of it, confirming to herself that it was the key she needed.
She held it out in front of her, and poured her magic into the metal, the satisfactional feeling of a connection being made filling her body.
“Open.” she whispered.
This was her last shot, and there was no way she’d mess this up.
o-o-o
Natsu grinned to himself as the steam around him rose up towards the sky, the wind blowing the vapor away from the river that once existed around him. He laughed to himself, patting himself on the back for wiping out the water around him as if it were a mere puddle. He’d have to ask Lucy and Juvia to refill the river once the game was over, a favor to the winner from the losing team.
Natsu ran his hand through his ruffled-up hair, and grinned once he began to see a female silhouette begin to form up ahead, the curves all too familiar to him.
“And I thought you knew me by now!” Natsu called out to her in a taunting matter, his left hand clenched into a fist and resting on his hip, his other hand up hear his face, his thumb pointed at himself, the rest of his fingers in a fist. “Water can’t stop this dragon slayer!”
The steam was almost fully cleared, and Natsu finally caught a glimpse of his opponent.
She’d gone through another outfit change, her bikini top and skirt had been exchanged for a bodysuit and half sleeve look, coattails jutting out from her curved hips. She stood with her legs planted firmly on the ground-in the mud no less-her long, blonde ponytail draped over her right shoulder, and right below the tip of her hair was the infamous piece of red fabric he sought after.
“You may be right.” he heard her speak clearly, smirking as she lazily flipped her hair over her shoulder. “So maybe it’s time I leveled the playing field.”
It was then that Natsu realized that she wasn’t alone, another shadow stood right next to her at attention, ready to attack. Natsu zoned in on the pointed ears and long neck, and he immediately knew who was next to Lucy.
He watched as she held out her hand, and with a small flash, a bow and arrow materialized into the air and landed perfectly into her outstretched hand, her fingers wrapping around the weapon confidently. As swiftly as the weapon arrived, she pointed it towards him, her fingers wrapped around the tail of the arrow and string, completely in charge.
Natsu grinned at her, huffing in satisfaction. “It’s been a while, Sagittarius!”
“Moshimoshi!” the spirit beside the blonde nodded to the dragon slayer. “Natsu-dono.”
He held a similar stance to his master’s, bow aimed and ready to fire. The sight of the two of them almost set him on edge, sending excited chills down his spine as Lucy flashed him with a confident grin.
“A little too muddy don’t you think?” Natsu asked aloud, directing his question towards Lucy, looking her up and down. “Wouldn’t want someone’s hooves to slip out from under them.”
“You just worry about your own hooves, ‘kay?” Lucy fired back at him, shooting a nod towards the horse next to her. “We’ve gotten pretty steady on our feet.”
“I don’t doubt that.” Natsu nodded, grinning as he clenched his hands into fists, orange sparks of baby flames flying out from his skin, the warmth of the fire egging him on and increasing his adrenaline, the battle before him sure to be an exciting and thrilling one.
They stared each other down for a solid three seconds before the sparks ignited.
“Bring it on.” he taunted, his leg muscles twitching.
She smiled at him and aligned her arrow with her target, her fingers steady.
“Oh, I intend to.”
And she sent her arrow flying.
o-o-o
In the duration of his whole life, there was only one time that Elfman had ever felt an immense amount of fear. It was years ago, after he’d regained consciousness from the beast magic invading his brain seeing his little sister bleeding and dying on the ground, the rocks around her bright red and wet from the rain. The fear that he had killed his sister, that his innocent little Lisanna was dying because of his actions pounded through his body. And to make matters worse, this had all been too painfully true. Which is why ever since she’d returned to them, he swore he’d never let fear overtake him ever again, swearing to himself that he’d push away the fear and take control.
And it was because of this promise to himself that he now stood outside of the bakery with a pained look on his face, walking down the steps in a lethargic manner with a piece of cake sitting perfectly on a plate.
He kept his eyes on the manly pink frosting as he felt the blazing stare of his teammates on him. He didn’t dare look up from his dessert.
“She...gave me cake.” was all he said to them, to which they groaned collectively.
They had a long way to go.
o-o-o
Natsu’s eyes widened as he watched Lucy switch the trajectory of her aim within a second’s notice, her response to him lunging at her all of a sudden. Natsu was able to catch a glimpse of her fired up eyes before his vision suddenly turned dark. A cold and damp substance smacked him right in the face, the feeling travelling across his arms and legs and permeating throughout his neck. He tasted earth and grime on his tongue, his face scrunching up with the metallic taste. He brought his arm up and swiped it across his face, clearing his vision for only a few seconds before he watched Sagittarius release his arrow, pointed at the ground like Lucy had moments before. He released the arrow, and Natsu’s vision was once again darkened by damp and cold black.
Lucy certainly knew how to use her surroundings to her advantage. Natsu silently praised her for using the mud around them, it almost made him smile as he thought back to the person he once thought Lucy was, back when they went on their first mission together. Back then, she complained over a snowstorm and hid in that Grandfather Clock looking spirit of hers. And now looking at her-well with what vision he had through the mud-she was getting down and dirty with the elements. It excited him, amusing him even.
His sharp hearing heard Lucy pull back on her bow once more, and he swiftly jumped backwards as he wiped the mud away from his eyes once more. The wet earth splattered onto his legs but he’d managed to dodge the brunt force of it.
Gotta stop her from shooting he thought to himself. He glanced down at the section of ground he was about to land on, and with a snap of his fingers he sent his fire blazing down on to the ground. The mudd succumbed to his flames, and turned hard and cracked. He landed atop of it smoothly, the dried pieces of mudd breaking off and hitting his ankles. With no extra second to spare, he launched himself towards Lucy.
Surprise filled her eyes as she took a half a step backwards as Natsu’s hand reached out towards her, adrenaline filling his body with the anticipation of victory.
However, that spirit completely left his body when he felt a hand grab onto his ankle and pull him down. He gasped in surprise as his stomach hit the ground hard, knocking the wind out of him as he gritted his teeth.
“What in the hell-” he said aloud before he turned towards the hand, meeting a pair of sapphire blue eyes piercing into his.
“Nice, Virgo!” Lucy exclaimed confidently, triggering a nod from the celestial being.
She was covered in mud, her pink hair matted up with the stuff, her usually neat dress adorned with the wet earth. She was in a similar position as Natsu, sprawled out on her stomach drenched in mud.
“Thank you, Princess.” the maid saidly plainly.
Natsu smirked at his partner, watching as she smiled back at him mockingly, swiping a piece of mud off of her cheek. “So we’re playing dirty now, huh?”
Lucy crossed her muddy arms. “Nothing dirty about it. It’s my magic, and last time I was concerned you’re the one who decided to play dirty.” she told him, gesturing towards the muddy ground around him. “I was looking forward to a mud bath from the spa, but this isn’t what I had in mind.”
Lucy watched Natsu as he laughed, propping himself up onto his elbows. “Sorry to say you won’t be making it to the spa. But the guys and I will be sure to tell you all about it!” he laughed. “This is the closest you’ll get to a mud bath.” his eyes swept around them, talking about the mud before he returned his look to the blonde.
Lucy closed her eyes in annoyance and huffed. “You boys are too dense to fully appreciate that spa. And this?” she gentured around her. “You call this a treatment?”
“I call this a pleasurable punishment.” Virgo chimed in, making Lucy sigh in exasperation. “Though it seems that Natsu-san wishes to get down and dirty with you.”
Natsu choked, coughing up the rough air in his lungs as Virgo’s words reached his ears. His throat felt dry as his eyes widened, to which he awkwardly glanced off to the side. Virgo had said some racy stuff in the past, that’s for sure, but her choice of words this time around made the fire in Natsu’s body heat up his face to a light pink. He glanced back at Virgo slowly, sweat beading on his temples as she looked right back at him innocently.
“Well, is it not true?” she asked him, looking from Natsu to Lucy.
“V-Virgo!” Lucy stuttered, her face glowing bright red. Her fingers around her bow shook uncomfortably.
“Is there not mud around us?”
Natsu and Lucy exhaled shakily, both of them releasing the uncomfortable stiffness to their bodies. Sure, that was his intention after all, in a matter of terms. He purposely didn’t dry up the ground below the water all the way completely, hoping he could use the mudd to his advantage to make it harder to move for Lucy, though he had no idea that she’d turn the tables on him and use the mud to her own advantage instead. Not to say that he didn’t think that there was a possibility that Lucy would have a plan up her sleeve, she wouldn’t be the person he knew if this were the case. She was smart, unyielding.
Natsu glanced up at the sky. He gritted his teeth as he realized that his time was almost up.
“You’re right,” he began, bringing his palms together. His words caught Lucy’s full attention, she tightened her grip on her bow, bracing herself for Natsu’s next move. His eyes swept down to the mud beneath him, then back at Lucy. He saw her eyes widen, and he knew that she knew what he was about to do.
“So, let’s change that.”
Screw the mud. Time to make things work in his favor.
His hands ignited, and he shoved them into the ground.
o-o-o
Juvia and Gray stopped in their tracks, halting their conversation as they watched the water in the river beside them begin to sizzle, steam billowing upwards to the sky. It reminded Gray of a hot tub, though hot tubs usually didn’t lose water as they heated up.
Juvia’s hair began to frizz up as she and Gray exchanged puzzled looks. Gray felt his face heat up from the steam, making him extremely uncomfortable as sweat pooled around his temples.
“What on earthland…” Juvia said as she watched the last of the water bubble down into the ground, creating streaks of mud in between the old cobblestones beneath the river. “What could be-”
She cut herself off as Gray shot her a look, and she immediately knew the answer.
“Natsu.” They both repeated in unison.
o-o-o
“Virgo!” Lucy shouted, throwing her bow out before her as it vanished with a flash.
“Understood!”
Natsu felt Virgo’s grip on him vanish. His ears picked up the sound of digging, and Virgo’s scent was suddenly dulled from his senses. No matter, he had work to do.
His flames worked almost immediately, spreading across the ground at a rapid pace and drying up the sticky mud, turning it into crust. He pushed against the ground and sprung upwards, running after his flames towards Lucy.
“Time to end this!” he exclaimed, giving everything he had in his stride. He watched as Lucy jumped backwards a little, her eyes darting to the ground and the fire that raced towards her.
The ground began to shake slightly, which Natsu picked up almost instantly. And with a sudden crack, he watched as a muddy figure popped out of the soft ground, an area his fire had not yet touched.
“Now!” Lucy exclaimed as she dashed forwards, leaping a few feet up off of the ground. Natsu’s eyes widened as the muddy figure, who he had quickly realized was Virgo, knelt down to the ground and held out her cupped palms. Her hands caught Lucy’s foot, and she sent the blonde flying up into the air. Natsu stopped in his tracks as Virgo winked in his direction and disappeared with a sparkling flash, right before his fire swept over the ground where she was standing.
Another flash of light caught Natsu’s attention, and he looked up to watch Lucy’s body engulfed in glitter.  He watched as the tails of her top melted away and when the light faded, she was wearing a new black and red outfit. She almost looked like a ninja.
“Sand Barrage!” she called out, throwing her palms together. A huge burst of sand spun in the air from her efforts, creating a sort of twister. The twister broke apart into four parts, and they shot out all around her, slamming into Natsu’s flames and effectively putting them out.
She landed atop of her hand, a little unsteadily Natsu noticed, her feet sinking into the huge layer of sand ungracefully. She grunted softly, but didn’t have time to focus on the ground as Natsu used his fire in his palms to shoot himself towards Lucy. She whirled around with wide eyes as she watched Natsu’s hand approach her waist, his fingertips inches from tagging her. She cried out in surprise, and Natsu was yet again met with darkness. He felt the sand invade his eyes and hair, falling into his eyelashes as he shook his head.
“No fair!” he exclaimed. “Ya don’t see me trying to shoot fire in your face!”
“That’s because if you ever did, you would never see the sun again!” she exclaimed furiously.
Natsu shook the sand away from his eyes only to see Lucy engulfed in light once more, changing back into her Aquarius Stardress. Without skipping a beat, she threw her hands down onto the ground and shot a heavy stream of water everywhere, dampening the sand. She heard Natsu’s advance, and her head shot upwards as she dodged his hand once more.
The two continued this dance of theirs for the next few minutes, Lucy dodging Natsu’s tag attempts and Natsu bending backwards to avoid Lucy’s lips, the mage trying her best to plant a kiss on him.
The ground around them had become nothing short of a disaster. Lucy’s water attack had made the ground soggy and almost impossible to walk or run smoothly on. Their scuffling hadn’t helped the situation either, mixing the wet sand with the dry dirt, which was mud again.
The final time that Natsu dodged her mouth, Lucy glared at him, angry fire brewing in her eyes.
“Get over here already!” she exclaimed, lunging for him once more, only slipping on her own feet and landing face first into the sandy-mud mixture.
Natsu burst into laughter as Lucy raised her head to glare at him, nothing but her eyes visible from under the tan and brown sludge. Her glare made him laugh even harder, making his muscles ache.
“You TOTALLY deserved that!” he exclaimed with glee, his laughter growing as Lucy’s attempt to scramble to her feet ended in her slipping back onto the ground. The agitated look on her face amused him as he made his way over to her to end the game, still laughing at an obnoxious volume.
That is, until he himself slipped in the mud and sand.
He fell face-first for the second time that day, and this time he heard Lucy’s laughter ring in the air.
“Karma!” She exclaimed “Doesn’t feel so hot, does it?!”
“Yeah, Yeah.” Natsu rolled his eyes. “Hilarious.” He propped himself up onto his elbows once more that day, and balanced on one of them to point at his partner. “I’m getting that flag from you! Even if I-”
He halted his speech, his lips parted from his unfinished speech. He stared at Lucy long and hard, making sure that his eyes weren’t tricking him. This made Lucy frown at him with confusion, obviously not seeing what he was currently observing.
“What?” she asked him, blinking slowly. “Is there something in my hair?” she patted her head worryingly, eyes darting around frantically.
“Where’s the flag?”
“Huh?” she frowned at him, her brown eyes big and naive. “What are you talking about?”
Natsu grunted as he hoisted himself up off of the ground onto his knees. “Your flag is gone.”
Lucy blinked at him slowly, and Natsu stared right back at her evenly, unwavering. She was leaning on her side, her left side of her body supporting her weight in the mud. Her key holder was exposed, some of her keys poking through prominently.
Her face slowly melted into an annoyed one, eyes narrowing.
“Nice try.” she said dryly. “You want me to look away so that I won’t see you coming towards me. That’s the oldest trick in the book, bud.”
“Luce, I’m dead serious.” Natsu countered, his eyes sweeping around them frantically, searching for any sign of something red. “Where is it?”
“Natsu, stop.” Lucy rolled her eyes, reaching for her hip. “I know for a fact that it’s right-”
She stopped talking as her fingertips only touched the green silk of her skirt. Her eyes widened as she slowly glanced down to find that Natsu was right. The flag was gone.
“What?!” Lucy exclaimed, releasing her magic and transforming back into her original outfit of her red t-shirt and black shorts. She patted her side down frantically, lifting her red shirt to see if it had sunk beneath the fabric.
“Hmph.” Natsu huffed. “I’d say I told you so but-”
“Oh shut it!” Lucy fired back, panic rising in her features as she hoisted herself up onto her knees, digging her hands into the earth around her. She threw clumps of sand and mud around her, digging till she reached stone. “No, No, NO!” she cried out.
“This is all your fault!” Natsu exclaimed as he copied her action, digging with all his might.
“My fault?!” Lucy exclaimed, grabbing a handful of mud and launching it in Natsu’s direction. “You’re the one who came at me like a mad man!” The mud ball hit Natsu square in the chest, which did not please him in the least bit. “And furthermore-”
Lucy’s eyes widened as she focused on something behind Natsu, a glimmer of something he couldn’t identify at first sparking in her eyes for the briefest moment. He frowned at her, until it dawned on him to turn around and follow her gaze.
There it was, sticking out of the ground like a newly grown flower. The red poked out of the ground ever so slightly, teasing the two of them.
Natsu looked back at Lucy, who met his gaze with her horrified one.
He smirked mischievously, and he took off running, laughing like a crazy person.
“No!” he heard Lucy exclaim, her breath heavy as she stumbled to her feet, slipping a few times before she dashed after Natsu, head outstretched.
The sky turned darker, signaling that the sun was ready to set.
Natsu cursed as he slipped once more, twisting his leg slightly. This sent him down back into the mud and sand. His scarf was heavy and wet against his neck, sticking onto his lips.
His ears picked up Lucy’s footsteps, and a competitive anger rose in his body.
The orange of the sky began to fade to black.
Enough was enough.
His eyes blazed with determination, and just seconds before the sunset was swallowed up by the dark of night, he launched himself up from the ground and wrapped his arms around Lucy’s waist, making her emit a startled shriek. They landed roughly in the mud, Natsu rolling on top if her and grabbing her wrists, pinning her tightly to the ground.
She stared up at him with her widened brown eyes, her chest rising and falling in perfect sync with his own. His drenched scarf fell halfway onto her chest, her ponytail sprawled out below him.  He looked down at her, studying her face while he caught his breath, grinning from ear to ear at his late-coming victory. His breath made her baby hairs shake, and her own tickled the tip of his nose, which sent exciting chills down his cold back.
“I.” he breathed out “win.” he said with a final breath.
Lucy continued to stare up at him, saying nothing.
Natsu grinned cockily down at his partner as she sank further down into the wet earth. “Too shocked to speak? I get it. But I did warn you that I’d win didn’t I?”
Then, she began to giggle softly, throwing Natsu off guard completely. Her eyes closed, a happy blush dusting her cheeks.
Natsu frowned down at her. Had losing made her lose it? Had the mud gotten to her brain or something?
“What are you-GAH!” he began to ask her, until he let out a surprised yelp.
She opened her eyes and looked up at him, sending confused shock directly to his beating heart.
Her familiar brown eyes were gone, and in their place were a pair of beady black ones with stark white pupils. Her lips curled upwards into a startling smile.
“Piri Piri!”
Natsu’s eyes widened in shock, his mouth hanging open as the girl beneath him flashed him one last smile before he was surrounded in a puff of smoke, his hands sinking back into the earth where he once held her wrists.
The smoke faded, and Gemini blinked up at Natsu innocently.
“Y-You…” he started to say, stammering off into silence.
“Good job, Gemini.” he heard a familiar voice praise the spirit. Her feet sloshed in the earth near him, and he felt her standing above him. “You’re free to go.”
“Piri Piri!” Gemini chanted once more before vanishing in a glittery veil. Natsu continued to stare down at the earth for a few more seconds before he turned his head to look up at the real Lucy, who was flashing him a victorious smile.
o-o-o
Lucy was concerned that she had thrown Natsu into a bad state of shock, watching as he glanced up at her, down at the ground, then back up at her. The charade continued for a couple of minutes before he finally spoke. She had to choke down several fits of laughter.
“When did you…” he asked her, pointing down at the ground to gesture to the Lucy imposter who he had pinned down just seconds ago. His brow furrowed in confusion, looking up at Lucy for the answer that wouldn’t come. She just stared at him, inspecting his face until she saw that it finally dawned on him.
“The steam.” he said aloud, clarification ringing through his voice.
Lucy nodded. “Have to admit that without you drying up the river, you probably would’ve won.” she told him, looking down at the red flag in her hands. “It’s a handy technique really, it’s helped me so much in the past year.”
Natsu remained on the ground, which unsettled Lucy a little. Was he really that discouraged that he didn’t tag her on time? If anything, neither of them had achieved their goal really. She hadn’t even gotten close to plating a kiss on his cheek, she felt like a lovestruck pre-schooler chasing after a boy who believed that every female on the planet had cooties. She frowned down at his back, reaching out to lay her palm on him to offer comfort.
“We should probably-”
Natsu suddenly lunged himself at her, grabbing her waist like he’d done to Gemini, and pulling her down onto the ground, Lucy squeaking in surprise. She felt the mud around her cushion the blow of her landing, the stuff tangling up in her hair. Her back became ten degrees cooler as the sand and mud pressed against her back. She even felt some splashes of the stuff against her cheeks and thighs.
The boy above her had a different aura than the one she had tried to comfort just seconds ago. This Natsu was smiling down at her brightly, laughing with amusement. She’d never been more confused in her life.
“What are you-”
“That was amazing!” he exclaimed excitedly as she looked up at him in shock. “I mean, wow! I never even realized what was going on! Using your spirits to fling you up in the air, and even using those fancy Star Dress things of yours all by yourself!”
A faint blush began to invade her cheeks, cancelling out the cold mud against her skin. The stars had began to come out now, and they twinkled around Natsu’s head in a cosmic dance. She watched the stars and her partner with awe, her heart beating to an unfamiliar tred. His features were lit so brightly, his exciting words almost blending into the beauty of the night sky as she just let him hover over her body, being okay with not being able to move for the moment.
Something shifted in Natsu’s face, and while she couldn’t quite put her finger on it, she realized in that moment that she didn’t want to look away.
“You...really are amazing, Lucy.”
He said it as if it were the most simple thing in the world.
Lucy’s heart pounded in her chest as the words repeated in her head, the sounds turning into ink-blotted text that swam tauntingly before her eyes, text she’d written herself from her novel.
You’re amazing
Breaking the silence between the two of them, Lucy dug her fingers into the mud and swiftly swatched it all upon Natsu’s cheek. She smirked as he glared down at her, bits and pieces of the mud dripping onto Lucy’s chest.
“This look becomes you.”
“Shut up.”
o-o-o
Happy sat perched on Natsu’s muddy shoulder as he and Lucy made their trek back to the guild. Natsu absentmindedly scratched the exceed in between his ears, the poor thing still wet from Lucy’s water attack. There weren’t any hard feelings between the two of them of course, after Lucy promptly told Happy that she’d make him a fish dinner the moment she saw him.
Everyone had slowly made their way back to the guild once the sun had set for good. However, Natsu could easily say that Lucy and himself looked the most messed up out of everyone else. Sure, there was mussed up hair with leaves caught in it, and sweat gleaming on skin, but when the two of them approached everyone else, the stares that they’d received made Natsu feel as though he were naked. Lucy huffed beside him, running her fingers through her ponytail to loosen the dried up mud.
Then again, he might’ve reconsidered him and Lucy’s appearance after catching a glimpse of Levy and Gajeel coming into view. He saw their matted up hair and sweaty faces, which he paid no mind to until he noticed that Gajeel’s belt was wrapped around his waist inside out, his stomach peeking out from his wrinkled up shirt. Levy hadn’t looked much better, with her headband almost falling off of her head and her shirt also rolled up, Natsu slowly began to piece the picture together.
His nose caught a strange scent, and he only had to glance over towards Wendy to figure out the source of the scent. Her eyes were wide and her face was pale, looking absolutely flustered as her stare fell down to the ground.
Natsu grinned. He’d have to confirm something with Gajeel later on.
Natsu and Lucy approached Gray and Juvia, who looked them up and down slowly. Gray raised his eyebrows at Natsu, while Juvia silently giggled to herself.
“Do I wanna know?” Gray asked, lifting up a styrofoam cup to his lips to gulp down the sloshing water inside of it, glistening with ice cubes that he undoubtedly created himself.
Natsu smirked, wrapping his arm around Lucy and pulling her into his side embrace, making her emit a surprised yelp. “We know how to rough it up in a competition!” he exclaimed. He glanced at the wet tips of Gray’s hair. “And what, you two just got your hair a little wet and did some slip and slide?”
Juvia immediately looked off to the side, her face glowing bright red. Gray coughed on his water, hacking up the liquid as Natsu and Lucy looked at each other with confused looks on their faces.
“What’s gotten you two so-” Natsu began before Juvia lunged forward and grabbed Lucy’s arm, prying her free from Natsu’s hold.
“Wh-Juvia?” Lucy asked in surprise before the water mage tugged her off to the right.
“C-Come with me Lucy-san!” Juvia exclaimed awkwardly as the girls left Natsu and Gray by themselves, watching them run over to Lisanna and Erza. The girls gathered in a tight circle, their faces hidden from any nosy eavesdroppers. Faint chatter erupted from the small crowd, but Natsu honestly wasn’t the least bit interested in what they had to say, for the most part anyway.
Girls were too weird.
“Alright, kids!” a booming voice rang out over everyone, who immediately ceased their conversations to turn towards the voice with excitement in their eyes, while some members looked sullen, knowing all too well that their defeat was to be announced.
Everyone made space for Makarov to walk, pooling around the guild master and making him the center of attention. “As usual, these games always bring dear joy to my heart. Nothing beats watching everyone do their absolute best to win!” He took a pregnant pause, allowing everyone to absorb his words before he grinned from ear to ear. “That, and gloating rights.”
Collective laughter and eyerolls spread among the guild members, signaling the desire for their master to get down to business, to which he didn’t disappoint.
“Now, I want both teams to line up single file, girls and boys.”
The circle around Makarov dispersed, teammates joining up with teammates shoulder to shoulder. The effort only took about a minute or so, and then the girls were facing the boys, all of them in a neat and parallel line.
Mira began to giggle to herself, and leaned over to whisper something in Erza’s ear. Contrary to last time, Natsu tuned in his ears to catch what she had said to Erza, who had smirked and nodded her head after listening to Mira’s words.
“We already know that our team won. Why drag it out and give the boys some false hope, huh?”
Natsu heard Gajeel grunt in annoyance beside him, Natsu realizing that he wasn’t the only one snooping on the girls’ conversation.
Makarov cleared his throat. “Now then,” he began, looking to his right towards the female team. “I would like all the female members who have been tagged before sundown to please get out of line and stand off to the side.”
Natsu and the guys watched as Kinana, Laki, Mira, Wendy, Evergreen, Bisca, and Cana all left their places in line to obey Makarov’s order. The girls left in line moved closer together to fill the gaps made by their teammates.
“And likewise gentlemen.” Makarov nodded to the men. “If you’ve been kissed by one of the girls before sunset, please leave the line and join this group over here.”
Now it was the girls’ turn to watch the line of guys shrink. Jet, Droy, Romeo, Bixslow, Freed, Elfman, and even Gajeel left the line. Gajeel had a visible storm cloud over his head, slightly sulking as he joined the group off to the side.
Natsu immediately pointed at the Iron Dragon Slayer and burst out in mocking laughter. “This is too good!” he exclaimed, laughing even harder “Way to go Levy!”
“Shut it!” Gajeel yelled back at Natsu, steam rising out of his head as he muttered something under his breath, which of course Natsu was able to pick up on.
“Still worth it.” he’d said, and quickly took a glance at Levy before adjusting his belt slightly. Natsu followed his gaze to find that Levy’s face began to glow bright red as she grabbed fistfulls of her shirt.
“Levy-chan?” Lucy had whispered to her friend, who began to awkwardly laugh it off and told her it was nothing.
Natsu looked back at Gajeel, a mischievous gleam in his eye.
Alright Gajeel, now I definitely see what’s going on.
“Now everyone!’ Makarov exclaimed, looking left and right at the members who still stood in the untouched line. “Congratulate yourselves on a job well done! You all were able to shine today, living up to the Fairy Tail name!”
On the girl’s side stood Lucy, Levy, Juvia, Erza, Lisanna, and Charle. They all met eyes with the boys across from them. Natsu, Gray, Laxus, Alzack, Happy, Loke, and Lily all equally stared back at them.
“If only I were able to tag Charle!” Happy said aloud. “Or even better, that she would have kissed me to get me out of the game!”
Charle rolled her eyes. “Seems it wasn’t meant to be, Tom Cat.”
Gray smirked. “Nothing I didn’t expect from the girls.”
“Absolutely.” Natsu agreed, crossing his arms. “Even though we totally dominated over them today.”
Lucy rolled her eyes. “As if.”
Erza nodded, agreeing with the blonde. “Try the other way around boys.”
Makarov held his hand up for silence to ensue once more.
“Now for the results!” he announced as his eyes landed on each of the winning members on both teams standing before him before he continued. “If I understand correctly, the correct flag has not yet been confiscated, at least to my knowledge.” he turned to the boys. “Can I assume that this fact is correct.”
Natsu swallowed dry air as he and his teammates exchanged questionable glances, each of them looking hopelessly at the flags still tucked into the winner’s hips. The proud looks on the girls’ faces didn’t help their case either.
“...No.” Loke was the one to speak first. “At least, I haven’t captured it.” he looked at his teammates with a hopeless grin. “I think we’ve screwed up in that department.”
“Way to rub salt in the wound.” Gray muttered under his breath.
“I see.” Makarov replied. He glanced over all the faces of the men for a few seconds before sighing to himself. “I tell you kids all the time that chasing after a woman who doesn’t wish to be chased is frowned upon, and yet the one time it’s acceptable, you don’t pull through.”
A collective amount of groans spread throughout the crowd.
Makarov waited for everyone to silence themselves before he spoke once more. “Tell you what,” he began, taking a quick glance at the girls, who then began to frown to each other. “I’ll make you all a deal.”
The chatter began once more, softly this time, waiting for Makarov to say his peace.
He sighed as he extended his arm towards the girls. “Well, since these girls are the only ones who haven’t gotten tagged, it’s obvious that the flag is with one of them. If you boys can correctly pick who has the real flag, then I’ll make sure all of us get a nice trip to the spa!”
“What?!” everyone exclaimed, some more jubilent than others.
Makarov shrugged. “Eh, I’m feeling generous.”
The winning team of men began to laugh with joy, Natsu’s excitement rising from his core as he saw the sour faces that the girls put on, rolling their eyes at each other and taking swift glances towards the boys while whispering in each other’s ears. The horrified look on Lucy’s face amused Natsu to the highest degree. “Oh, it’s over now!” he exclaimed, high fiving his teammates. “We’ve got this down!”
The girls all looked into the eyes of the boys before them, their arms crossed defiantly.
It was Erza who spoke next.
“Let them try.” she said, glancing at her girls with a confident smile on her face. She flipped her scarlet hair over her shoulders and glanced over at the boys with a condescending smile. “They still won’t win.”
“Oh?” Laxus sneered. “Wanna bet?”
“Absolutely!” Mira exclaimed from the sidelines. She flashed a thumbs up. “There’s no way that they can win!”
Natsu and the others were too caught up in their glee to listen to anything the girls were saying to bring them down. This was it, this was their chance to win once and for all.
“You only get one chance.” Makarov informed them. “So choose wisely. It has to be a unanimous decision from the whole team, so all of you over there can join your team to decide on your choice.”
The boy’s team all gathered together before their options, muttering to each other in a low volume as to not let the girls hear their conversation.
“Well?” Loke asked the guys around him, glancing over to their competition. “Who are we going with?”
“It’s not Juvia.” Gray informed them. “She showed me her flag when our sparring was over and done with.”
“Not Levy either.” Gajeel said, nodding his head confidently. “Her flag’s blank. Didn’t see our crest on it when she tied it o-”
He cut himself off as everyone immediately began to stare immensely at Gajeel, who began to choke on his words, coughing as if to deflect the words that he was about to spew. His eyes cautiously darted around his teammates, and with a low growl of aggression, he hastily finished his sentence “It ain’t her. Moving on.”
Natsu grinned. Oh, he was so gonna have some fun with this.
“Okay, well, what about the rest of them?” Loke asked everyone, his strategically calm voice filling their ears. “Do we have any solid proof or any suggestions as to who could have it?” Loke turned to Natsu. “You were the one to find Lucy. Did you happen to see anything?”
Natsu frowned before shaking his head. “The flag got lost in the mud around us for a few minutes, but I wasn’t able to tag her before the sun set. Besides, when she went to pick up her flag it was covered in mud. I didn’t see the Fairy Tail Crest.”
Loke nodded. “Alright. Anyone else?”
Freed and Bixslow frowned to each other. “We saw the flag on Lisanna’s hip before we were ambushed.”
“Erza...bakery…” Elfman muttered in shame.
“We’re going about this wrong.” Laxus said gruffly, catching everyone’s attention. “We can’t fully go off of what our eyes did or didn’t see. We gotta get into their heads, think like them a little.”
The boys digested Laxus’s words for a minute, each of them deep in their own thoughts trying to solve the riddle before them.
“Well? Any ideas?” Laxus asked them, frowning to himself.
“It can’t be Charle.”
Everyone turned their attention to Happy. He held his paws together calmly, a look of concentration on his face. “My beloved is smart, and she can dodge attacks pretty quickly.” He glanced over towards the white feline and his eyes stopped on the red piece of fabric tied at the end of her tail. “But she wouldn’t take on that responsibility.”
“What makes you say that?” Gray asked him.
Natsu felt something touch his calf, and he looked down to see Happy looking up at him confidently, his paw touching Natsu’s skin. “She had someone she wanted to look after.” Happy said, obviously referring to Charle and Wendy’s partnership.
Natsu smiled and ruffled Happy’s fur affectionately. “Damn right, Little Buddy.”
“Alright, So Juvia, Levy, and Charle are definitely out.” Gray reported. “So that means it’s between Lucy, Lisanna, and Erza.”
A small bit of laughter filled the air, and everyone turned their heads to the source.
Their choices of females stood calmly before them, their faces looking all too smug as they smiled at the boys haughtily, copying Erza’s confidence in that they thought they couldn’t outsmart them.
The girls who’d been tagged were giggling softly, covering their mouths to try to muffle their laughter.
Natsu made eye contact with Lucy, and in response, she smiled coyly at him. Her eyes swam with a secretive glitter, and it set Natsu’s spine on a competitive edge.
She was mocking him.
o-o-o
Lucy’s stomach danced with butterflies as she smiled cockily at Natsu, the glare he shot back at her making her giddy with competition.
The flag was still safe and sound, there was no way they’d figure it out.
She watched as the crowd of boys broke apart, their faces serious and bodies stiff. Lucy took a swift glance to her left and right, her teammates confidently standing their ground like she was.
“Well then, have you made your decision?” Makarov asked, to which the boys nodded slowly.
It was Loke who stepped forward, raised his right arm, and pointed at their choice.
o-o-o
Natsu had an uneasy feeling in his stomach.
Their choice...it was too easy.
She blinked at Loke slowly, frowning in the direction of his finger.
“Oh?” Makarov questioned. “What’s the logic behind this choice?”
Loke adjusted his sunglasses cooly. “It seemed like the obvious choice.”
The pit refused to leave Natsu’s stomach as he was convinced that they’d made the wrong choice. It had seemed so perfect at the moment, even he himself had been so convinced at the time that they’d made the right choice.
And as soon as Loke pointed to one of the girls, Natsu knew that they screwed up.
“She’s the only one that none of us would’ve gone for.”
“She’s stealthy enough to not give up anything.”
“She looked too proud eating that piece of cake!”
“It’s her!”
“It has to be!”
She smiled at them through her scarlet hair, and with another smug grin, she whipped her flag off of her hip and held it out in front of her in all its glory.
It was blank.
The boy’s jaws dropped to the ground in astonishment as the girls cheered and laughed, celebrating their victory.
Erza walked over to Loke, who stood there in a stunned silence as she flung her flag playfully over his face.
“Better luck in the next games.” she told him sweetly. “We told you that we’d outsmarted you.”
“But…” Gray frowned, pointed at Erza and then directed his attention to the gleeful group of girls who still held unopened flags on her hips. “Who has the right flag then?”
The girls laughed once more, making Gajeel burst out in an annoyed grunt, telling them to quit their act.
“Yeah!” Elfman exclaimed, putting his hands on his hips. “Stop laughing and man up!”
Erza’s gaze went from Loke to Elfman, who instantly took a step backwards, still shaken up from their encounter in the bakery.
“Man up?”
Everyone turned to a pouting Levy, who rolled her eyes and untied her flag from her hip. She held it up for the guild to see, the blank red square shining in the moonlight.
“Let’s get something straight here.” she began, her pout turning into a sly smile. “Manning up isn’t something that we plan on doing. Ever.”
It was then that Juvia stepped forward next to Levy, and held her blank flag up with her right arm.
“You see, why would Juvia and her teammates have to man up when we’re fine being the strong women that we are?” She said proudly, as Lucy stepped up next to her. The blonde flashed everyone a confident smile as she untied her flag and held it out in front of her.
“We’ve managed to take all of you down with just a small piece of fabric.” she told them proudly.
Her flag was also blank.
“So why would we man up when our womanly vibes were enough to win?” Lisanna chirped, flashing her blank flag in the air.
Everyone was silent, their eyes wide as they digested the girls’ words.
“Th-Then that means…”
All eyes went down to Charle, Happy’s eyes bulging out of his head.
But, she turned her nose up at all of them, bringing her tail down towards her front paws to swiftly pull off the red tie on her tail. “Hmph.” she closed her eyes, unfolding her flag and holding it out for everyone to see. “As if we’d resort to stooping to become a bunch of tomcats.”
The blank surface was blinding against the moonlight.
“What?!” multiple voices exclaimed, pointing at the blank flags that the girls proudly held out before them, frustration filling their voices and bodies.
“Cheaters!” Bixslow exclaimed, putting his hands on his head as if he were about to fall over. “How in the hell is this a fair win when none of ya don’t even have the right flag?!”
“Cheaters! Cheaters!” his babies chanted angrily above his head.
“That’s a new low, even for you guys!” Gray exclaimed, crossing his arms. “What gives?!”
“How dare you accuse Juvia of cheating!” The water mage exclaimed. “Juvia and her team would never cheat!”
“Get your facts straight!” Erza retorted. “It’s so obvious the sun has gotten to all of your brains!”
Everyone began to yell at everyone, bickering loudly.
Makarov’s voice boomed out loudly, telling everyone to cease their yelling at once.
Makarov looked at each of the members a second at a time before sighing to himself, calming down his voice.
Natsu, however, remained oddly silent.
He usually was the first one to jump into a tiff like the one that happened moments ago, however there was still something eating at him. His eyes danced on the flags in each of the girls’ hands, trying to figure out what it was exactly that they were missing.
A certain puzzle piece that wouldn’t fit...a math equation that was missing a variable….an optical illusion….
“The girls have not committed any cheating of any sort.”
He looked over each girl quickly, his eyes scanning their bodies until they landed on something that he’d previously overlooked, something that he didn’t even think to consider.
An illusion…
Natsu’s eyes widened suddenly, drowning the accusations of his teammates and the proud laughter of the girls as he suddenly put his mind to work.
It wasn’t that they were missing a piece of the puzzle, but that they were just looking at it from a different angle, paying more attention to certain pieces than others.
Paying no mind to the piece that really mattered.
“How?” Gray asked aloud to which more laughter erupted from the girls as the sound of footsteps filled Natsu’s ears.
“It’s because you’re unable to think like a woman.”
Everyone turned towards the person who decided to walk forward into the blank space between both teams. Her blonde ponytail swished gracefully behind her as she smiled to herself softly.
Natsu watched as she tucked in her muddy flag into the side of her shorts.
His stomach sank to his feet as he watched her hands slowly move from her hip and raise themselves up to her ponytail, grabbing onto her blonde locks as if to tighten the red tie that held her hair together.
She made eye contact with Natsu once more, and when his eyes widened in understanding, she flashed him a cocky smile.
“It’s time that you all…”
Her hands grabbed onto the red tie in her hair and she swiftly undid the knot, setting her hair free to fall and cascade over her shoulders in a blonde waterfall. The wind picked up as she did so, making her hair sweep over her brown eyes. Her intoxicating scent filled Natsu’s senses and she slowly unrolled her red hair tie, releasing it from its roll and holding it up for everyone to see.
The Fairy Tail Guild Crest shone brightly in the moonlight, every male member into a stunned stupor.
And with relish, she finished her sentence.
“...opened your eyes.”
Nobody spoke.
That is, until somebody did.
“Are you FUCKIN’ KIDDIN’ ME?!”

Chapter 9
xxx
The car ride was filled with silence that almost felt suffocating. Why did Natsu have to go and say that?! Dan was probably ready to press charges if her impulsive best friend decided to carry out his “promise.” Then she would have to bail him out, scold him, and threaten to never talk to him again. Lucy knew he’d probably beg for her forgiveness, but would commit attempted murder all over again.
That was Natsu in a nutshell.
Dan broke the silence. “It seems Dragneel hasn’t changed much.”
She laughed and gave him an apologetic look. “Sorry about that. He’s just a little overprotective.” Overprotective might have been an understatement. Gray and Erza were overprotective, but Natsu? There was always a hint of jealousy radiating out of him when it came to Dan.
Natsu was in a happy relationship, so maybe jealousy wasn’t the word for it. Was the idea of someone else taking up her time, something that he couldn’t handle?
Dan chuckled, his eyes still focused on the road. “Nothing wrong with that. It shows just how much he cares for you.”
While that was true, Natsu still carried some sort of grudge against the man.
It was then her mind ran back to just moments before Dan showed up at her apartment. Natsu was trying to tell her something, but in all honesty Lucy was too caught up in her own fears to listen. She knew it was something serious and she could feel it in her heart that what he had to say would change the dynamics of their relationship.
Lucy wasn’t ready to deal with that.
“Are you okay?” She heard Dan ask.
She caught him stealing a few worried glances in her direction.
Lucy only smiled and nodded. “Yeah, its just been a while since I’ve been to one of these.”
“A party?” He questioned.
Lucy shook her head. “No, a party is meant to be a place of fun, friends, and laughter.  This event is meant to be nothing more than a competition to see who has the most money and who can get the most dirt on a person.”
“It’s been a while since I’ve been to such an event, but I don’t remember them being that unbearable.”
“Trust me when I say it’s a nightmare. I remember when my parents were called unfit because they decided to let me go to school in the city instead of being home schooled. All because nosey people wanted to know how “little Lucy” was doing.” She sighed heavily at the memory.
“Yikes.”
“It’s part of the reason why my family and I took ourselves out of that lifestyle,” she said flatly.
“Well, you won’t have to worry about that tonight. Anyone who tries something will have to deal with yours truly.”
Lucy smiled softly.  “Thanks.”
He smiled back at her as they pulled up in front of a brightly lit mansion.
Getting inside the Orland home was easier than getting valet parking. Once inside Lucy was complete awe of the place. She had forgotten how much money the Orland’s put into their annual event. From a live band to the detailed ice sculpture of Magnolia’s famous Sakura tree in the middle of the room.
The Orlands really knew how to go all out.
“Legion Corps Vice-Captain and Heartfilia Heiress an item?” On most days Lucy would be ready to chew out the person who dared make any sort of accusation about her, but she was all smiles when she was met with her co-worker Jason.
She waved at him. “Hey, Jason! I didn’t know you were working the event tonight.”
“You think I’d miss the Orland’s try to bounce back after what happened? I’m lucky enough to get the opportunity.” He was right. The press were outside in droves, but only a select few were allowed inside.
Probably to minimize any false news circling the air.
Jason holds up his camera. “Mind if I get a picture of you and your date?”
Lucy and Dan happily obliged as Jason began to take a few pictures. He wasn’t the only one as a few others managed to follow his lead. No doubt these pictures would make it online articles and magazines. She can already feel a call from her father coming in within the next few hours.
Lucy could hear a few murmurs from press and guests alike as they stared at her and Dan. Let the rumors begin…
Just as Lucy was ready to glare daggers at the people an announcement of the hostess’ presence towards the stairs.
At the top of the staircase stood Minerva clad in a blue tight fitting dress. Next to her stood a tall man with blonde long hair. Lucy quickly deduced that, that was fashion designer Rufus Lore. He was known as the youngest designers, getting his start with Sabertooth Collections as a teenager. Lucy remembered his early years were filled with other designers claiming he stole his work. Claims that were never proven.
Minerva looked out into the crowd and cleared her throat. “Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for attending our annual charity event. As you all know, my father could not be here tonight to grace you with his presence.”
‘Because he’s a drug dealer.’ Lucy thought.
“While he may not be here, I hope to represent the company to the best of my abilities. Do not forget that we will taking donations for various orphanages such as “The Rosemary Children’s Association.” Sabertooth Collections as well as the Orland family, hope to give the children of Fiore a bright future and we need your help to make that happen. Aside from that, the night is young and all the champagne won’t stay chilled for much longer. Please enjoy the festivities.”
The crowd clapped as Minerva was escorted down the flight of stairs by Rufus. It didn’t the woman long to spot Lucy and Dan in the sea of people. She broke apart from Rufus who disappeared into the crowd and with a few graceful strides, Minerva was at their side.
Lucy sensed a few of the press snapping photos near them. Yep, she was definitely getting a call from her father.
“Mr. Straight, I’m so glad you could make it!” Minerva says offering him a handshake.
Dan shook her hand with a charming smile. “I was honored when you sent me the invitation, Ms. Orland.”
Minerva glanced at Lucy as if she was just now noticing her. She was scanning Lucy from head to toe as if she was trying to find a way to make some backhanded comment about her appearance.
While she’d like to comfortable shorts and a t-shirt any day of the week, fashion was something Lucy never played around with when it was time to get serious.
Minerva pulled Lucy in gave her a cheek to cheek kiss. “I’m so glad you were able to make it, Lucy. Tell me, how is your mother’s health?” Oh, right. That lie was still a thing.
“She’s better, thanks.” She needed to change the subject.
Lucy looked at Minerva then at Dan. “I didn’t realize you two actually knew each other.”
“Mr. Straight has been working closely with us to create the Legion Corps’ new line of tactical uniform. We have yet to really discuss the details with the public, but I believe within the next few weeks an announcement should be made.” Minerva said proudly.
Dan chimed in. “Our collaboration was part of the reason I came back to Magnolia. You’d be surprised to see the ideas we came up with within a week. I’m almost sad I have to leave. I would have loved to dive deeper into that beautiful brain of yours just a little longer, Ms. Orland.”
Was that flirting Lucy sensed? It was easy to forget Dan had a tendency of being a smooth talker, but one would think that after all these years he would turn it down.
Minerva waved him off. “You’re far too kind. The companies research team deserves all of the credit.”
The conversation was cut short when Rufus came in and informed Minerva that other people requested her presence. She politely excused herself from the two and disappeared into the crowd.
“How about we start off this night with a dance?” Dan offered as he bowed with a stretched-out hand.
Lucy giggled and took his hand in hers. “Of course.”
The sounds of jazz music echoed from live band as Dan gently pulled Lucy onto the floor. It took no time for Lucy to find herself in his embrace as they slowly moved with the music.
“Reminds me of our first dance.” He says in a quiet tone.
Lucy looked up at him confused. “Our first dance?”
“Back in college. You were so upset that night and all I wanted to do was make you smile again. Do you remember?”
How could she forget?
Xxx
Lucy had just finished working on a big assignment for her Multimedia Reporting class. She had spent the last few hours analyzing the same audio files of the big Second Trade war.  Lucy had listened to those files so many times that when she heard the loud music blasting from the fraternity house as she made her way inside, it almost sounded foreign.
Lucy had no intentions of going to any sort of party after the busy week she had. On a good day, she would have no problem partying with her friends, but there came a time when a girl needed to be alone. She was ready to hit the sheets and read her favorite novel “A Cursed Love.” A book she never knew she needed until Levy presented it to her as a gift.
Surprisingly, it was Levy that had been the one to finally drag the blonde out of her dorm after countless hours of pleading and promising to help her study for her Spanish exam that was to come in the next few days. That girl was lucky Lucy loved her dearly or her butt would have stayed home.
Lucy threw on whatever she could find in her closet and wrapped her hair into a bun. It wasn’t her best look, but there was no reason to get dolled up for her current location.
Stepping into the frat house she spotted Natsu through the crowd of people and smiled. Suddenly the tiredness she felt seemed to melt away. He always had that effect on her. He was like a ball of energy that selflessly shared its power with others.
Natsu had offered her a drink and teased her about her low tolerance when she declined. She huffed and attempted to bite him. What else could one do in her situation? Let him slide? Nope! Natsu liked seeing her flustered and she wasn’t having any of it.
Lucy suddenly felt someone wrap and arm around her waist which startled her. She was relieved to see it was Cana who began to pull her away.
Natsu called out for her over the loud music asking to save him a dance and she accepted. A small blush crept up to Lucy’s face and she hoped it went unnoticed as the sight of him disappeared.
It wasn’t the first time the two had danced.
Natsu reluctantly became her test subject once she joined the dance team. Any moves or tricks she wanted to try out, he was her guinea pig. He wasn’t bad at dancing like she believed him to be. He wasn’t perfect, but he was good at following instructions when he wanted to.
This time, however, was different.
He wasn’t helping her with a new routine, he genuinely wanted to dance with her at a party. What if he wanted to dance to a slow song? That meant they’d be close. Really close. He’d have his hands around her waist while hers would be wrapped around his neck. She’d be able to get lost in his eyes as they swayed to the sounds of the music. She’d want to lean up and kiss him before any second thoughts cloud her mind.
The desire to ask him to go back to her dorm with her with hopes he’d comply, would have lingered as she slowly pulled away from him.
The idea of what could transpire between the two caused the pink blush surrounding her cheeks changed to red.
Maybe reading nothing but romance novels was bad for your health.
“Having naughty thoughts?”
Lucy was brought out from her thoughts and was met with a devious smirk from Cana.
“N-no!”
“Right and I’m not tipsy.” Cana mused.
If she was, it was hard to tell. Cana could fake being sober if she wanted. She was a master drinker and could drink anyone under the table. Many have tried and failed miserably to beat the brunette.
A habit that Lucy sometimes envied yet disliked at the same time.
“Did you need me for something?” Lucy asked quickly changing the subject.
“As a matter a fact I did!” Cana pulls out her phone and grins.
“I want you to take pictures with me so that asshole of an ex-boyfriend I have can see how much fun I’m having without him.”
“Trying to make him jealous?” Lucy asked.
Cana scrunched up her face in disgust. “Hell no! If he sees me having the time of my life with someone else and gets jealous then that’s his problem. I just want to prove that I don’t need his dick to be happy.”
“Wouldn’t a guy be better suited for that? Gray, maybe? I’m sure he wouldn’t mind.” Juvia on the other hand…
“You’re much cuter than Gray and it gives me an excuse to do this!” Without a moment’s notice, Cana pounces on Lucy earning her a small squeak from the young Heartfilia. A second later Lucy heard the small click of a camera and evil laugh from Cana.
“Don’t we look so cute together!” Cana exclaimed as she waved her phone in Lucy’s face. Lucy looked at the phone screen and smiled. Cana had an arm wrapped around Lucy, who was in mid smile as her friend leaned in for kiss.
“You tried to kiss my cheek?” Lucy questioned.
“I was aiming for your lips, but I guess I’ll have to try harder next time.” Cana winks.
Lucy rolled her eyes at her friend’s teasing. Cana was never one to hide her sexuality and she was rather bold. No matter who you are, if she found you sexually attractive you were going to know about it.
Cana snickered. “I’m only teasing! Besides, I know a certain soccer player who would kill for a kiss from you!”
Lucy laughed nervously and waved off her friend’s accusations. “Natsu doesn’t like me in that way.”
There was no use in denying her feelings for Natsu. Most of her friends knew long before she even came to terms with it. However, there was no way Natsu would ever think of her as anything more than a friend. In the years that she has known him, there was no indication that he was remotely attracted to her the way she was to him.
Cana’s eyes widened and looked as if someone took the last bottle of beer. “Are you kidding me? He’s Lucysexual!”
Lucy’s looked at the brunette quizzically. “Lucysexual?”
Cana looked at her friend with a smug expression. “Erza and I made it up! He’s attracted to hot blondes, with big boobs and have the name Lucy Heartfilia.”
“Th-that’s not true!” She yelled.
Lucy would have expected Cana to come up with such a ridiculous word, but Erza?
Levy soon appeared with Juvia following close behind. “Are we trying to convince Lucy that Natsu likes her, because I’m all for that.”
Lucy made no effort to hide the betrayal she felt. “You’re supposed to back me up here!”
Levy shrugged as she took another sip of her drink. “I’m not going to lie. The two of you were always joined at the hip. He’s possessive of you and will probably kill the next guy who looks in your direction.”
Lucy wasn’t sure why she was looking sympathy from Levy. She would join forces with the pink haired man when it came to teasing Lucy. High school was all fun and games until her two close friends found a common interest and that was poking fun at her.
“I wouldn’t say possessive and Gray would do the same!  I don’t see you guys throwing him on me!” Lucy eyed Juvia, hoping that the woman would agree with her comparison.
“Juvia used to think of Lucy as a love rival, but it is clear who her heart belongs to.” Ah, yes, the wonderful “Love Rival” phase that started at the beginning of their friendship. It took a while for Lucy to convince Juvia there was nothing going on between her and Gray.
Lucy rolled her eyes. “Why do I even bother?”
Cana thought to herself for a moment and then her devious smirk returned. That was never a good sign. “Why don’t we test this theory?”
Levy raised an eyebrow. “What are you proposing?”
“Natsu asked Lucy to dance. If a slow song comes on and he shows up that means our lovable pink haired friend totally has the hots for her.”
“I don’t thin-“ Lucy began, but was immediately interrupted by Levy.
Levy clapped her hands together and smiled brightly. “That sounds perfect!”
“How are we sure a slow song will play?” Juvia asked.
Cana looked at the DJ and grinned. “You leave that to me. I just need you two to be good little distractions and get those two away from Natsu.” She pointed behind the women.
The women looked over to find Gajeel, Gray and the man of the hour drinking.
“Piece of cake!” Levy said.
Lucy seemed to be the only one against the plan. “Hold on! Don’t I have a say in this?”
“Nope.” Cana said simply.
Lucy gave Juvia one last look, hoping to get through to her friend. “Juvia, you’re not going to go along with this?
“If this is a plan that involves Juvia getting close to her darling Gray then she is ready.” There was determination in Juvia’s eyes as she responded.
Lucy didn’t know what she expected.
“I’m going to go talk to the DJ. You guys get in position.” Cana orderd.
The three women broke away from Lucy to commence their plan. It didn’t long for Levy to drag Gajeel off and Gray was so busy with Juvia clinging on to him that Natsu was left on his own. Lucy looked over at Cana who was flirting with the DJ and whispering who knew what into her ear. The DJ blushed and nodded at Cana.
In no time, Cana made her way back over to Lucy.
“You’re up after this song. Go find him and make sure he asks you to dance.”
Find him? Wasn’t he…?
When Lucy turned her attention back to Natsu, all she found the space he had occupied filled by another person.
Lucy looked around. “Where did he go?”
“I saw him heading outside. Better hope he doesn’t leave.”
Lucy sighed. If her friends went through all this trouble just for her, she might as well go through with the plan, right?
Cana gave her a thumbs up as Lucy walked away.
What was the worst that could happen? It wasn’t like she was going to confess right then and there. He was just going to dance with her to a song…a slow song…possibly a love song.
Lucy’s legs started to shake and her confident stride across the room didn’t feel so confident.
This might have been a mistake.
Before Lucy could back out, she found herself opening the door and suddenly she wished she backed out of this sooner.
Her heart sank to the pit of her stomach at the scene that unfolded before her. Natsu was there with his lips pressed against Lisanna Strauss, who seemed to be really into the kiss.
Lucy was aware of Lisanna’s crush on Natsu. She was subtle about it, but if you paid attention Lisanna’s interactions with him, figuring out her feelings for him was a no brainer.
There was always a small pang of jealousy Lucy felt whenever Lisanna and Natsu were together. Whether if it was for a project or them casually hanging out, the sight of the two left a bitter taste in Lucy’s mouth.
Lucy begun to slowly understood Juvia’s jealousy earlier on her friendship.
To say Lucy was shocked wasn’t the best word. Heartbroken? Upset? There were so many words that could describe how she felt.
Natsu has never shown any interest in Lisanna, that Lucy could notice, so why in the world was this happening?
Maybe there was a spark between the two she was just too blind to see. An attraction that was so strong that Lucy could never begin to understand.
Not wanting to be spotted she closed the door gently and leaned up against it to keep herself steady.
Lucy felt the urge to cry. Her eyes burned as the tears formed and it took everything within her to choke back a sob.
She knew she was fool for believing that Cana’s plan would work. She was even more foolish for thinking he was interested in her in the slightest.
Her internal meltdown was interrupted when she heard her name being called.
She quickly wiped away a stray tear before looking up at the person. It was Dan Straight. “H-hey, Dan. I didn’t see you there.” Lucy blinked back the tears a little confused. She half expected Cana to be in front of her ready to eavesdrop, but the sight of Dan threw her off guard completely.
They had crossed paths a few times, but not enough for her to know him that well.
“Are you okay?” He seemed genuinely worried.
“Yes, I’m just a bit stressed. I was hoping coming here would relieve that, but I guess I was wrong.” Dan looked at her for moment. Lucy knew he could sense there was more to her story and whatever it was, was happening right outside that door.
“Dance with me.”
For the second time that night, he caught her off guard. “No, I-“
He puts up a hand to stop her.
“I will have none of that. Let me take your mind off of whatever it is. I’m not the most skilled dancer, but I can at least try to make you smile.” He held out his hand.
He was sweet, she had to give him that.
Lucy contemplated for a second.
She could decline, go home and possibly cry herself to sleep. The idea was tempting, but then she’d have to devise an escape plan because going out the front door was not an option.
That was too much work for an already emotionally tired mind.
The other option was to accept Dan’s offer. There was nothing wrong with dancing with him. From what she’s heard Dan was a nice guy and didn’t seem like a complete creep compared to most of the drunk partygoers.
Lucy smiled halfheartedly and took the young man’s hand.
Dan pulled her onto the dance floor pushing through the crowd of people.
Cana was the first to spot Lucy and her expression mirrored that of her other friend’s as she passed them. Confusion.
They didn’t know what had transpired moments before this moment. They didn’t know how hurt she was, but she would tell them and they’d understand.
At least, she hoped they would.
When the song started, Dan pulled her close and gently swayed to the sound of a guitar emitting from the speakers.
She closed her eyes in hopes to block out the stares she received, but the feeling of holes boring into her wouldn’t go away.
She tried to take her mind off it by listening to the music and listening to the rhythm of Dan’s heartbeat as she rested her head against his chest.  It worked for a few seconds until she heard the faint sound of Gray’s voice. She could have sworn she heard him call out for the young man that currently plagued her thoughts.
When the song ended she politely thanked Dan and walked away. Not even a second later Cana pulled her over to the side still in complete shock. Levy and Juvia soon joined her their expressions unchanging. Lucy told them what she had seen and their faces forming into a mix of sadness and sympathy.
Lucy decided to head home after that. She didn’t see Natsu or Lisanna for that matter, but it was probably for the best.
As the days went by Lucy spent most of her time working towards getting an internship with Sorcerer Weekly, her dream job.
Lucy knew that this was an excuse to avoid Natsu which was the hardest thing to do. Being a part of extracurricular activities that sometimes-crossed paths with the soccer player and sharing the same circle of friends made things very difficult.
Natsu was the first to give up the charade and did all he could to move forward with their friendship. Even when she insisted she was busy, he would want to be “busy” with her.  It took Lucy some time, a day and a half to be exact, until she started feeling comfortable around him again.
The image of him kissing Lisanna, never left her, however. That was something that would take her a while to get over.
Whenever Natsu wasn’t around Dan seemed to make his presence known to Lucy quite frequently. He would visit her after practice and walked her from class to class every chance he got.
Shortly after he asked her out on a date. Her friends thought it was a bad idea, but what was the harm?
Lucy thought that by agreeing to be his girlfriend would rid her of any feelings she might have had for Natsu.
Oh how wrong she was.
When senior year rolled in, Lucy had gotten accepting as intern for Sorcerer Weekly and got herself an apartment that was close to her new job. Dan had left for about a month and a half to start his military training, which left Lucy alone. Well, not completely alone.
She always managed to find Natsu either rummaging through her kitchen or passed out with Happy on her bed. The first few times she would scold him and wonder how he managed to get in without a key, but she quickly got used to him being there.
She got to see more of him, so she couldn’t complain too much.
Lucy would never admit it, but she loved coming home to Natsu.
She loved scolding him for leaving a mess or for breaking into her apartment. She loved being able to cook for him and Happy. She loved seeing a smile on his face when he asleep and wrapped up in her sheets. She loved how he always looked as if he had the best sleeps  in her bed.
She loved him.
The time Natsu spent at her place caused the feelings she had for him to make its way back to the forefront. It was as if her efforts to push away her feelings and be happy with Dan went down the drain.
Lucy would be lying if she said she was excited when Dan returned. Natsu grew busy with his firefighter training and didn’t come over as much. Dan was still the charming prince that showered her with compliments, affection, and so much more, but it wasn’t enough.
Not long after, Natsu announced that he and Lisanna were dating. It made her blood boil.
Lucy couldn’t understand why.
She was in a good place with her boyfriend and yet the thought of Natsu being with someone else still managed to make her feel envious.
There was a huge part of her that couldn’t bring herself to feel anything but jealousy. The feelings she had weren’t fair. It wasn’t fair to Dan, Natsu or Lisanna and yet she still had them.
By the time Lucy was ready to put her jealousy behind her, Dan decided it was best for them to part ways. In a way, Lucy was hurt, but she was more relieved than anything. She didn’t want to continue to hurt Dan without him even knowing.
Now here she was a few years later, still alone and still in love with the same man she’s tried so hard to get over.
Xxx
Dan chuckled causing Lucy to look up at him. “Same old Lucy. You always had your head in the clouds.”
She must have been out of it because they had stopped dancing at some point.
She laughed nervously. “Sorry, I was…trying to figure out what your other reason was for coming back was. Did you have something else to do?”
Dan thought for a moment. “If I’m being completely honest with you, Lucy, I was more eager to see you again.”
Lucy looked at him shocked. “Y-you were?”
“I was afraid that you had moved on and I’d lost any chance I had of seeing your gorgeous face again.” Lucy blinked blankly for a moment to register what he was saying. She could feel her face grow warm.
Dan leaned in to get a good look at her. “You okay? Your face is looking a little red.”
Taking a step back Lucy nodded quickly. “Y-yeah! It just got really hot all of sudden.”
“I’ll get you some water.” Dan escorted Lucy off to the side and ventured into the crowded room in search for a suitable beverage.
Lucy sighed once Dan left. To think one of Dan’s reasons for coming was to see her again. As sweet as it was the thought alone turned her into a bundle of nerves.
“Is that who I think it is?” Lucy immediately perked up at the familiar voice behind her.
“Oh my gosh! Mira?!” Lucy pulled her friend in for tight hug and received one from Mira in return.
“I had no idea you would be here tonight!” Mira exclaimed.
“With what’s been going on with Minerva’s family I thought she could use a friendly face!” Lucy replied. Laxus then appeared behind the two with two glasses in hand. He greeted Lucy with a small nod in her direction and handed her the clear liquid that looked more like water than any form of wine.
“You’re only having water?” Mira wasn’t a lush like Cana, but it just seemed odd that she chose water as her drink of choices. It was then the realization hit Lucy. Her eyes widened as a blush appeared on Mira’s face and Laxus looked away awkwardly.
“Three weeks.” Was all Mira said.
Happiness couldn’t even begin to describe how she felt for Mira and Laxus. She contained her squeals by bringing her hands up to her mouth. “Congratulation!”
Mira’s smile widened. “Thank you! We’re hoping to announce it right after the wedding or at least before I start showing.”
“Your secret is safe with me! Not even my date wi-” Mira interrupted her.
“Date? You have a date? Is it with someone I know?” Mira always enjoyed learning about Lucy’s poor excuse of a love life. Lucy never understood why.
There were times when Mira would joke that Lucy and Natsu looked good together. A thought Lucy already considered.
She started ignoring the woman’s comments right after she suggested that Gray might have a thing for her. Good thing Juvia was nowhere near them at the time.
“You’ve crossed paths with him a few times.” Lucy said.
Mira’s eyes lit up and she eagerly looked around. “Finally! Where’s Natsu?”
Lucy frowned at the question. Why would she think Natsu was here? More importantly, why would she think he was here with her?  “Why would I be he-“
“If it isn’t the dazzling Mirajane Strauss and her husband to be.” Dan’s voice sounded behind Lucy as as she felt his arm wrap around her waist.
Mira’s eyes widened in complete shock. Even Laxus looked surprised to see the man “D-Dan, I didn’t know you were back!”
“Not for much longer. Although, if given the right reasons, I might change my mind.” He looked over at Lucy with a warm smile causing her to blush. She heard a faint snort coming from Laxus and turned just in time to see Mira lightly elbow her fiancé in the stomach.
Mira brought a hand up to her mouth and she urgently looked at Laxus. “I’m not feeling too well. Laxus, would you mind escorting me to the restroom?” She gave Lucy a quick hug before pulling Laxus off.
That was weird to say the least.
Dan was the first to speak after the couple’s departure. “I hope she’s alright.”
“I’m sure she is…” Lucy’s words trailed off when her eyes were met with Minerva from across the ballroom floor. She was talking with a group of people when Rufus walked over and whispered in her ear. Minerva’s thoughtful smile she held for most of the night fell.
Minerva gave the guests an apologetic look and if Lucy looked hard enough there was some irritation as well. With a handshake, she walked away from the group of people with Rufus in tow, disappearing around a corner.
Something was up. Minerva was never one to leave a party. In fact, she lived and breathed opportunities that would put her family on the front page. What could possibly pull her away?
Lucy quickly turned to Dan ready to give the good old “I need to powder my nose” excuse, but he beat her to it. He was staring at his phone with annoyance dancing in his eyes.
“I have to make a quick phone call, beautiful. Excuse me.” He didn’t even give her time to answer before he briskly walked off.
‘It must have been important.’ She thought to herself.
Lucy didn’t dwell too much on his abrupt exit as it gave her the chance to figure out what was going on with Minerva.
Just as Lucy was ready to follow the raven-haired woman two men stepped in front of her.
Lucy had forgotten the type of people events like this attracted. Rich people, yes, but most of the guests were questionable, creepy, and snobbish. The two men before her fit all three categories.
Jose Porla and Duke Everlue were a part of one of the richest families in Fiore.  One was a billionaire entrepreneur and the other was part of a lineage of authors.
Lucy had only met them a few times through their business with her family. Jose was the one that used to creep her out the most. When her mother was present he made no effort to hide his attraction her. He tried very hard to be the charming stud he wishes he was, but he just came off as pushy.  “I never thought I would see the day when a Heartfilia would grace us with their presence again.”
Lucy put on her best smile. “Mr. Porla, it’s been a long time.”
He takes Lucy’s hand, leaning down to gently kiss it. “Please, call me Jose.”
The feeling of the man’s wet kiss and mustache brushing against her skin made Lucy’s skin crawl.
She pulled her hand away with a polite smile. “R-right…”
Jose looked Lucy over and as flattering as it was supposed to be Lucy felt like she was on display. “You have grown up to become quite a sight, my dear. You definitely are Layla Heartfilia’s daughter. Don’t you agree, Everlue?”
Everlue shrugged his shoulders clearly unimpressed by the blonde before him.
“I’ve seen better.” Was the short man’s reply.
Lucy didn’t let his words get to her. The man had weird taste and would call the most beautiful women ugly. Her mother was one of those women who received his harsh critiques.
Lucy smiled to show his words did nothing to her self-esteem. “You’re just as direct as ever Mr. Everlue. I would like to send out my sympathies for the loss of your old library. As a person who avidly visited the facility, it pains me to see the building be tarnished in such a way.”
The man shifted uneasily as if the topic made him uncomfortable. He glanced at Jose for a moment, who seemed to be too distracted by Lucy to even notice. “It doesn’t really matter to me. The building was old and set to be taken down anyway. Someone did me a favor,” he said with trying to show his disinterest.
A pretty indifferent statement for someone who almost had his building burned to the ground. Whether it was going to be torn down or not, that building was what put the Everlue family name on the map. It’s one thing to tear down the building on their own accord, but it’s another when someone else deliberately does it. It should have been unsettling.
Making note of his response, Lucy held her smile. “Of course. If you’ll excuse me, I’ll be on my way.” Far away from them was very ideal. “Wait!” She felt Jose grab her arm with long, clammy fingers. She flinched at the sudden contact and quickly pulled away.
Jose smiled one of those creepy smiles, as if Lucy wasn’t already weirded out. “I was hoping I could ask you for a dance.”
Not even on his best day would she consider him as a dance partner. “I would love to but I can’t because…because…”
Where the heck was Dan when she needed him? Her eyes darted around the room in hopes to find the missing man, but there wasn’t a trace of him.
Lucy felt a warm hand gently grasp her shoulder and she sighed with relief.
“Because she promised me a dance.” Lucy’s heart leaped out of her chest at the voice.
That didn’t sound anything like Dan. Not even close.
That voice was something she spent years listening to and could point out without having to second guess herself. There was still a sense of hope within her that she was wrong.
Lucy slowly turned her head to the person who now stood by her side and her heart stopped.
This could not be happening.
Next to her stood a tall man wearing a black suit which revealed his white partially unbuttoned shirt. On most people, such an attire would be deemed sloppy or unkempt, but the look was working for him. The next thing Lucy noticed was his jet black spiky hair. It was as normal as any other hair color, but on him it looked so unnatural.
Jose glared and looked the man up and down, as if he was sizing up his competition. “And who might you be, boy?”
The man in question gives Lucy a quick wink and holds out his hand towards Jose.
“Zeref Vermillion at your service.”
Only one thing came to Lucy’s mind.
‘You have got to be kidding me…’

read on ff.net
Every year, the town of Magnolia hosted a video game convention. The dazzling events and wide variety of it made the convention a very popular place for fans to gather. A young man named Natsu Dragneel lived there in Magnolia and he was quite the video game enthusiast, buying the newest games as soon as they hit the market. So, obviously, the salmon colored haired male went to the convention every year. Whether it be with friends, or just by himself, Natsu didn't mind. Video games were his true comfort, and that annual convention was almost like a second home to him...Most would say that Natsu's one and only love were the accumulated copies of video games in his possession.
Although...there was one particular blonde that caught his attention. At every convention he went to, Natsu always saw the blonde headed girl in question there. One time he was able to get close enough to the girl, and saw that she was cosplaying as one of his favorite characters from the video game, Fairy Tail. It was at that time, Natsu started developing feelings for the woman. Although, he was too...thick-headed...to notice it then. Eventually, though, the feelings he had for her grew, to the point where even he knew that he had fallen for the mysterious blondie. Now, Natsu was not one to hide his true emotions, so the man decided that when the next Magnolia video game convention rolled around, he would tell the blonde of his feelings.
Well...how would he do that? Now, Natsu is what you could call romantically impaired, so, he asked all his friends on what he should do. From the girls he got romantic mushy stuff, which wasn't much to his taste...and from the boys he was told to use pick-up lines. Pick-up lines, he could probably do...but he only knew video games. Well then, how about video game pick-up lines? Seems like a win-win. For the next couple of weeks before the convention, Natsu searched the internet trying to find the best gaming pick up lines. Most were hilariously bad, but there were some that the man decided he would try to use.
As the day the convention arrived to Magnolia got nearer, the salmon haired man became even more panicked. Would the pick-up lines work? Would she like him back? As the male thought about it more, the more defeated he felt about the whole ordeal. He could just not say anything and live the rest of his life...but he knew that he would regret it if he did not. Alas, the day the convention started finally arrived. (Natsu was so nervous to the point that he was slightly shaking, not that he would admit it.)
The man looked everywhere for his mystery girl, but saw her nowhere. Maybe she didn't come to the convention this year, although highly unlikely. Still, Natsu felt dejected, and went to go sit down on a nearby bench, too depressed to look at the stuff provided at the convention. That's when he saw a flash of yellow in the corner of his eye. It was the blondie! The salmon haired male quickly got up and ran as fast as he could in the direction that the girl went. Finally, the blonde stopped at a Fairy Tail booth, looking at all the merch with much passion. Well, now was his chance. Natsu quietly went up to the blonde and gently tapped her shoulder. The blonde spun around, a little frightened that she was abruptly...tapped? "Jeez! You scared me!...Is there something you need?" The blonde said, having put her hand over her heart, trying to calm herself down. Natsu's mind drew a blank, he never thought he would have gotten this far. After an awkward pause, the salmoned haired man gulped and nervously stuttered, "I...I..I'm on a quest for your heart." The blonde girl blushed, but grinned and replied, "Do you like Nintendo? Because I think wii would look good together."
Now it was Natsu's turn to blush, but managed to spit out, "Full character customization could never capture your beauty." "For you I would travel all levels around the world," Lucy said, cheeks ablaze, challenging the odd pink (salmon) haired man in front of her. Natsu took the unspoken challenge, and countered the pick up line with, "Are you a magic flower? Because you're burning me up!" Of course it wouldn't be right unless Natsu used a pick up line involving fire. After all, he is a pyromaniac, but that's for another time...The blonde quickly tried to think of another game related pick up line, not wanting to lose the unofficial game. Ah, she knew exactly what to say.
"I'd raid your dungeon." Lucy smirked, knowing it was worth saying that when she saw the mystery man in front of her choke and turn as red as a tomato. Looks like the blonde won this round. "...My name is Lucy...what's your's?" The blonde asked, waiting for the stranger in front of her to stop his choking fit. Once the salmon haired man finally got control over himself he replied,"Natsu. The name's Natsu." Oh god, that sounded way better in his head…
Lucy giggled, "Well Natsu, what spurred whatever that was, on?" Only Lucy would ask something like that, quite analytical that girl is. The man stuttered, "Well I uh...You caught my eye? And I just uh...felt the need to come and say hey? I mean not to be a creep or anything but I saw that you're very interested in Fairy Tail which is my favorite-"
"No way! You like Fairy Tail too?!" Lucy exclaimed, eyes gleaming, cutting the man off. Natsu gave a small laugh, rubbing the back of his neck, grinning, "Yeah! I have all the installments. Fairy Tail is just such a wonderfully designed game...in fact it was the first game I ever bought." The blonde gasped, "It was my first game too! Fairy Tail got me into this awesome world of gaming hehe."
The two hit it off after that, conversing about the latest games, who their favorite character was, etc. As the time passed, the more they learnt about each other. It almost seemed as if it was a conversation between two old friends (cough lovers cough) instead of complete strangers...After a while, Lucy's friends, who accompanied her to the convention, motioned her to hurry up, wanting to go visit the other booths. The blonde looked back at them, giving them the 'I'll be there in a minute' look. Looking at Natsu again, Lucy apologized, "Sorry, my friends are waiting on me...It was fun talking to you! Oh! Before I forget, here's my number." The lady took out a pen and small notebook from her purse and wrote down her phone number on one of the pages. Ripping the paper out and putting it in Natsu's palm, the blonde blushed and smiled at the man in front of her. "Here you go!" The salmon haired man grinned, trying to make the sexiest face he could muster, "I'll be sure to call you later." The blonde blushed even more, and quickly walked away toward her friend group.
"Oooh who was that hot piece of ass?" A brown haired girl purred, slinging her arm over Lucy's shoulder. Lucy rolled her eyes and pushed the brunette's arm off, "His name is Natsu and he likes Fairy Tail. He's a sweet guy, not someone that would suit your taste Cana." The brunette pouted, pulling a bottle of alcohol out of her purse,"Aww that's no fun, I was hoping I could make him my play thing." "I don't know if that would be a wise decision...It looks like Lu-chan took a liking to him." A short, blue haired girl piped in, giggling.
"I...I did not! Sure he's a cute and funny guy...and we have a lot of things in common...but it just...wouldn't work out." Lucy defended, moving her arms in a shape of an X. "If you think that...why is your face as red as a tomato?" The bluenette smirked, knowing that Lucy obviously had feelings for that man. Well damn, she got me there, Lucy thought.
Natsu was quite dumbfounded. He finally got the courage to talk to his dream girl, who he now knows as Lucy. They were hitting it off really well, at least that's what the man believed. Yet, now the blonde was walking away with her friends. He wasn't ready to say goodbye yet...sure he had her number but it wouldn't be the same as talking to her in the flesh. He knew what he had to do. Natsu built up the courage and followed the blonde and her friends.
"Wait!" Lucy turned around, giving the man in front of her a questioning look. Natsu took a deep breath and continued,"It's dangerous to go alone...Here, take this!" After that was said, the salmon haired male quickly grasped the blonde's hand and held it. The girl blinked once, then twice, trying to process what just happened. Soon afterwards, though, Lucy snorted and squeezed Natsu's hand.
"Dork."
