Caldon and Kiva have the cutest platonic relationship that I have ever seen in a book.
I don’t care what you say, I love them.

I just finished the prison healer trilogy and oh my god these books were insanely good. So if you‘re into found family, a strong main character, elemental magic and slow burn romance you should definitely check it out!

My opinion on Jaren in The Blood Traitor:
Spoilers.
Frankly, Kiva is having a goddamn awful time in the last book.
First of all, she is hooked on angle dust and back in a place she'd thought she'd finally escaped. Not so good. But Cresta is helping her through it. (I love Cresta.)
Then she's kidnapped by Navok, who basically makes her his slave. She's rescued (yay!) everyone hates her (nay!).
When they're in the market and they're trying to get information about the rings out of that seer lady (I don't remember her name, sorry), she gives Kiva two options: kiss Jaren (the person who she is under the impression hates her) or take some angle dust (which she had previously been addicted to, and only recently recovered from). That is such an awful thing to do. The fact that Kiva chooses the angles dust over Jaren shows how much she's doing for him. He hates her. She doesn't choose that option because of that.
Later, she says, half delirious, "I’m in love with him, can you believe it?". I'm not really sure how to put what I'm thinking into words, but you can see what she did for him, right?
And then he kissed her when she was under the influence, half-unconscious and falling asleep?! What the fuck, Jaren. You need the tea talk.
Anyway, after Jaren nearly dies falling off that cliff, Kiva is crying a bit (understandable), but he kind of makes fun of her for it—at least, that's the was I saw it.
Then,
Jaren: You’ve been avoiding me. I have no idea how you feel. So I asked.
Kiva: I’ve been avoiding you because it’s what you want.
Jaren: I’ve been trying to talk to you for days, you know that. It’s been incredibly frustrating. You’ve been avoiding me because you’re afraid.
Kiva: I’m not afraid.
Jaren: You are. You’ve barely been able to look at me for weeks.
Kiva: You’re the one who wouldn’t look at me! You told me you wanted nothing to do with me — so I gave you that!
Jaren: I lied.
He says "I lied" like Kiva should have known that, should have seen through him and talked to him or whatever. It's like he expects, after a whole book of hating—or at least seeming to hate—her, that she accept that he was lying. That it was all fake. I think that's unfair. He's assuming that Kiva is avoiding him because she's "afraid", and completely ignoring his own actions. If I was Kiva, I would also be avoiding him because, know know, he's acting like he hates me.
By saying Kiva is afraid, it's a little bit like pinning all the angst on her. Which, yes, to be fair she did technically steal his powers, but their angsting is on both of them.
I think Jaren has a good reason for hating her. I would to if she'd stolen my magical powers. The thing that makes me hate him, however, and not her, is the fact that after spending the whole book ignoring her, being rude, and implying that he hates her and never wants to have anything to do with her ever again, he says "I could never hate you, Kiva." It seems, to me, a bit like he's gaslighting her.
He proceeds to tell her all the ways it isn't her fault. A good thing, but it goes against everything he's said and acted for the whole book.
I get that they obviously need to make up and stuff, but I think it could have been done better. In enemies(ish) to lovers, it tends to work better (for me) if they do hate each other and don't deny it. It's more like "I hated you before, but I don't anymore" instead of "I've pretended to hate you, but I actually don't".
Because Jaren does have a real reason to hate her. He could have just said like "I'm sorry for being an ass, but I promise I see you are now. And it's not your fault." I think that would make more sense.
Anyway, this is, once again, just my opinion. I'm not trying to be particularly hateful and if you loved this book, good for you.
I hope this made sense, thank you for coming to my TED talk, bonne journee :)

"The Blood Traitor" by Lynette Noni
"The Blood Traitor" is the third (and final) installment in "The Prison Healer" series, and it is a truly grand finale.
"The Blood Traitor" relies heavily on the theme of addiction to tell part of the story. So, if you're sensitive to that, tread lightly.
This final part of the series begins with Kiva facing the fallout of her sister's scheme. She's abandoned and broken, but she befriends an unlikely ally, who seems to be hiding her own secrets. They get through some pretty tough situations until they are separated and the story really begins to take off.
I realize the more I get to know Kiva, the more I cannot understand how she's survived so long on her own. It's actually unbelievable. She's not the fierce heroine that she should be due to her experiences; at least not in my opinion. I wasn't too bothered by this, but it was a little annoying for her to be in constant need of someone's aid - especially after she supposedly survived by herself for so long in Zalindov.
Caution: Spoilers Ahead
Speaking of Zalindov, I was a little disappointed in this series as a whole due to the lack of Zalindov in the second and third books. The series is called "The Prison Healer," but the prison is only briefly revisited in the last book. I would have loved to see more of the story play out in Zalindov - this prison that is supposedly impenetrable, yet somehow these characters keep getting out. The prison was fascinating in book one. It made for a very unique story, but that was about all we got from it.
This book also lacks in the romance department, quite like the others did, but I never felt like I missed it. There were enough platonic interactions with so many of the other characters that it made up for the two main characters who were essentially ignoring each other.
"The Blood Traitor" was definitely more intriguing than "The Gilded Cage," in my opinion, but neither of the books hold up to "The Prison Healer." Despite that, "The Blood Traiter" was faster-paced and genuinely entertaining. The reader got to experience more of Wenderall, however, I would have loved for that to not have been so rushed. Those other kingdoms were truly fascinating and I would love to see a spin-off where Lynette Noni writes more about them.
I also have to say that some of the plot points and resolutions were a bit elementary. I would have wished for things to be less... superficial? Alas, I think that's the YA element once again giving me just a smidge less than I want. So, the novel can't be blamed for that one - I think that just comes with the territory of YA.
I'm not dissatisfied with this book, or this series. It turned out how I hoped, and I really liked these characters and their endings. There were so many plot twists that I didn't count on and I was kept guessing throughout. Lynette Noni really did a wonder with this series. Though it's not on my all-time favorites list, I'm glad I read it. And I'm still glad for the recommendation (sorry for the time it took me to get through it).

February 2024 Reviews
Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian (★ ★ ★ ★/5): a basic little YA fantasy that reads well but is surprisingly violent. There’s clearly a lot of heavy shit going on here and I’m looking forward to seeing how the author will write it out
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson (★ ★ ★ ★/5): had a bit of a slow start but definitely picked up from there. I love a good little suspense and mystery read
Beta by Jasinda Wilder (★/5): I’ve read some bad smut books but this one takes the cake. Absolutely full of inconsistencies and bad dialogue. Please stick to wattpad
Everfair by Nisi Shawl (★ ★/5): I loved the idea of this book more than the book itself. It was hard to get through and a bit boring
The Gilded Cage by Lynette Noni (★ ★ ★ ★/5): another great addition to this series, much more action and political drama with another insane ending. This series is keeping me on my toes
The Blood Traitor by Lynette Noni (★ ★ ★ ★/5): for the series finale it could’ve been better, the main characters didn’t even talk to each other for 75% of the book. Overall not too bad of a series though, I would read it again
Happy Place by Emily Henry (★ ★ ★/5): man I had expectations for this book and I definitely shouldn’t have. The same problem every 10 pages and honestly who knew what tf was going on ever
Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters (★ ★ ★ ★/5): a historical fiction piece about lesbians! A bit slow with no real plot but I enjoyed it nonetheless

Lynette Noni deserves more appreciation
Lynette Noni is an Australian Author and her books are amazing. They consist of
The Medoran Chronicles - YA fantasy, Harry Potter x Xmen vibes
Summary: Alexandra Jennings steps through a doorway to find herself in another world, Medora. While waiting to find a way home she attends a boarding school for teenagers with extraordinary gifts. There she makes friends and learns that a threat is looming, in which she might be the only one to save Medora.
Books include: Akarnae, Raelia, Draekora, Gravevale, Vardaesia and We Three Heroes (We three heroes is a set of 3s novellas each based on, one of Alex's best friends and their involvement/reaction to what is happening and roughly takes place between the events of Gravevale and Vardaesia)
The Prison Healer Series - Fantasy, Dark YA, elemental powers
Summary: Kiva has spent the last 10 years of her life at Zalindov, a death prison, waiting for her family. When the Rebel Queen is sent to Zalindov, Kiva must fight to keep her alive. ( I can't say much more because there are so many twists and turns and betrayals and revolutions that I don't want to spoil the whole series)
Books Include: The Prison Healer, The Gilded Cage and The Blood Traitor
Whisper Duology - YA science fiction, Stranger Things Eleven plotline vibe x Xmen
Summary: A girl only known as "Jane Doe" has been locked away in an experimental lab for 2 1/2 years and hasn't spoken a word. But when a new evaluator comes and starts to chip away at her walls, one word could change the world. As secrets start to unveil and twists and turns around every corner. Nothing is as it seems. (Also it is set in Sydney Australia which is where I live and its so weird reading about places I have gone to, in a science fiction novel)
Books Include: Whisper and Weapon
