The Sonic LEGO sets are so bizarre, because on the one hand you have completely made-up stuff like the Knuckles mech, and on the other hand you have things like a boat for Tails which is from Sonic the Fighters? At the end of the day I don't mind all that much, but it's so all over the place it makes me wonder how the design process goes

Villains I dont see very often; mute. Mute villains are the best, nothing can convince me otherwise.
One idea thats been on my mind is a mute villain confessing to the hero, either through sign language, or a perfectly executed scheme. You’re choice :))
Not sure if this counts, but I ran with it. Might try this again after I gather some ASL knowledge. Hope you enjoy :)
A Silent Movie
It wasn’t exactly easy to get Hero sat in front of the cinema screen. In fact, the planning for this trap had taken over sixth months. Not to mention the money it took to buy this building off foreclosure, and the multitude of investments into Hero-proofing the location.
It was even harder to get said hero to stop yelling long enough to pay attention to the image being projected from the back of the room. Not that their sense of hearing was needed for this experience, but Villain imagined Hero would appreciate the lack of noise-based distractions, including sounds they themselves were making.
The theater was notably large, probably the most expensive showing room of its day. That is to say, the upholstery was a little outdated. The popcorn had been swept off the floor, the swirling carpet surprisingly clean. The velvet of the seats did not appear stained, and the cupholders were absent of any discarded snacks or tickets.
The glow of the emergency exit lights were the only thing illuminating the room, and they revealed a dim image of the hero situated in the center of the third row, which was optimal seating in the villain’s opinion.
Clearly, Hero did not agree, considering how hard they were pulling at the restraints to try and exit their carefully selected theater chair.
It was futile, of course, and the hero finally stopped straining when the villain appeared a row below them, quiet as a mouse, standing with a finger pressed to their lips.
Villain retreated when the hero quieted, letting their attention shift to the screen and this special showing. Images flicked past, and Hero became engrossed in the story unfolding on the screen.
Shown was a news reel Hero recognized as the time Villain had crashed their Election Day speech. A zoomed out map of the city, marking City Hall with a red square. Grainy footage of two figures dancing around next to a dumpster. Once again the map appeared, now with two squares pasted on top. The pattern continued, and Hero was amazed.
It was an agglomeration of every moment they had spent together, every public battle, every nighttime-shady-alley encounter.
There was only one reason to collect these momentos, these reminders. It had all meant something to the villain.
The complete lack of kernels on the carpet certainly pointed to a level of dedication and commitment to this scheme.
Maybe, they were hoping it meant something to the hero, too.
Another scene zoomed out a final time, revealing all the markers spread across the city. Only, now, Hero noticed, a rather distinct pattern had formed.
Villain moved like a phantom, appearing again, this time at the hero’s side. The ropes at their wrists fell away like magic while Hero gazed at the awkwardly hovering villain. They presented the hero with a glittering object hung from a chain held loose around their fingers. It was a large ruby gem, expertly cut into the shape of a 3-D heart.
Stolen, no doubt, Hero suspected possibly from the large jewelry exhibition that had just entered town.
The screen flashed bright, and lit up the hero’s face as it contorted in surprise. They processed the scene as fast as they could.
A heart of red markers, a heart of ruby, a heart fluttering in their chest, a heart laid open in front of them.
“Oh,” Hero breathed, “Oh.”
Villain sucked in a breath.
This was it, this was the moment they got rejected because they couldn’t-
“I had no idea.”
Of course they didn’t know, it’s not like Villain had ever spoken about it.
Preparing automatically for the rejection, Villain started to withdraw their hand, cold-as-steel demeanor returning to them with all the familiarity of a security blanket.
It was so stupid of them to think that they deserved any kind of reciprocation, so stupid to think that the hero could possibly-
The hero snatched the charm from their fingers before they fully withdrew.
“I didn’t say no,” they spoke softly, and the villain’s heart skipped a beat.
They reached out their other hand, wrapping their fingers over the still-outstretched hand of the villain. Instead of elaborating, Hero pulled the frozen criminal closer, connecting their lips in a gentle proclamation.
Actions spoke louder than words anyway.

i see this opinion echoed across the Doctor Who fandom: that we really enjoyed Maestro, and love the idea of The Devil's Chord, but feel like the episode was lacking a little something in the writing department. so here's my suggestion: they shouldn't have killed off Timothy Drake 👀🎶 hear me out:
from the start, we're introduced to Timothy Drake as a deeply talented individual, and one disgruntled with his position in life. his passion and genius have been squandered, and he's been relegated to teaching his craft to disinterested schoolboys. but we learn he has a darker interest...Timothy is a scholar as well as a composer, and he decides to spice up his day by telling his pupil about the lost Devil's Chord. and then, Maestro erupts onto the scene...and they are everything that Timothy has never been able to be. Maestro is loud, and flamboyant, and unreservedly powerful: every glittering gem on their body screams you will look at me, and you will listen. and while Timothy's polite-society conditioning and time-typical bigotry are his initial response, we can tell that Maestro intrigues him. in return, Maestro doesn't just talk to Timothy, oh no. Maestro all but seduces the man, by speaking aloud all of Timothy's most private thoughts: that he's a misunderstood genius, and that it isn't his fault he never got that break. in this way Maestro manifests as a Devil figure, luring Timothy into an unspeakable Faustian bargain. here he is, wasting his life and talent and songs away in some stuffy school...when he could have so, so much more. like Maestro, he could be powerful. he could be who he wants to be. and most importantly: he could make people listen to him. i would've loved a version of The Devil's Chord where Maestro manipulates Timothy Drake into drawing out the music of others, thereby killing them, and feeding Maestro in the process. perhaps there could have been a caveat to Maestro's power: as the Essence of Music, it could be that Maestro has to operate through a living being, much like a demonic muse. not only could Timothy get all of the attention he ever wanted, finally being recognised for his musical brilliance...but he could exact revenge on those who said he'd never make it. wouldn't this have been a fascinating parallel with The Beatles? what if we'd seen an increasingly power-mad Timothy Drake, rising to stardom in an alternate timeline where everyone is devoid of musical inspiration, leaving him as the sole musical genius in the world? what if the Doctor and Ruby's horror at a devastated world included the theme of creation for creation's sake, as opposed to the manic pursuit of adoration which Timothy so clearly desires? perhaps i have lost my mind. perhaps i am reading far too much into the way Timothy looks at Maestro in the latter half of the clip above. but i think the terror of Maestro would have come through even more if they'd kept Timothy Drake around, and trapped him in a Phantom of the Paradise-esque doomed narrative with Maestro whispering in his ear and helping him take control of his destiny 🎶🔥

Options for the next web serial Patreon vote
It's time to vote on what the next derinwrites web serial will be. Sample chapters for each option will be provided shortly, then a poll will go up so that patrons can vote on what web serial I should write next.
Inner Life
Nobody knows who they really are when they’re first born. But most people get time to figure it out, and when you’re a body-snatching alien parasite, you don’t get that luxury. The parasites that find themselves on the starship Jolly Codger don’t know what a human is, or what their spaceship’s mission is, or where they’re going. They don’t know who on the ship is an ally, and who is an uninfected human who’ll kill them the moment they’re detected. But they’d better figure it out, because the Jolly Codger has its own secrets and its own enemies, and the real threat isn’t the crew – it’s what’s chasing them.
Child of a Wandering Star
Tyk is a normal adolescent girl, interested in normal adolescent things – earning gems for her carapace, learning to be the best burrower for the hive, making her mother and father and altmother and altfather proud of her. But Tyk was born under a Wandering Star, destined to be a traveller, and it’s hard to really feel a part of a hive that raises you with the expectation of watching you leave them someday. Tyk doesn’t want to go. She’s ready to fight destiny.
But her destiny finds her when a star-egg falls from the sky and hatches a baby god. Soft-shelled, two-legged and clawless, this larva is all but helpless on its own and quickly attaches itself to Tyk. The Stargazers divine that it should be brought to Starspire, the place where earth meets sky, so that it can be returned to its people. This, here, is the destiny that Tyk was born to.
But Tyk’s not sure she’s cut out for such a gruelling journey, and she’s certainly not cut out for raising a baby god. Is this really her journey to make?
Silverbane
Jade was just looking to fulfil her jobseeker requirements and get her Centrelink payment. She didn’t expect to actually get the job working at the mysterious new pawn shop full of weird, creepy artefacts. She had no interest in dealing with bleeding knives, ghost dolls, and whatever the hell it is that keeps using all the mugs in the break room without washing them, even when nobody’s present in the shop but her.
Jade would like to be able to shrug and say that it’s none of her business. She really, really wishes that she was the kind of person who could leave things alone if they weren’t her business. But after snooping a little too deep a little too often, she finds herself tangled up in something a lot scarier than the occasional haunted doll, working for the kind of… “people”… who are perfectly happy to eliminate something the moment it becomes more dangerous to them than useful. And through them, she can learn more about how the world really works than she ever expected.
She just has to hope that it’s worth it.
Our Side of the River Styx
A woman who can see the dead joins forces with her zombie wife to become exorcists-for-hire, helping the dead and living alike find peace. But there’s something strange going on with the barrier between worlds; something stranger than murderous phantoms in white or menacing shadowy figures in hotels. Something… organised. Something growing.
The exorcists are out to pay the rent, not save the world. But when a string of supposedly unconnected jobs forms such an obvious trail of bread crumbs, what is there to do but follow it? Will our Styx-crossed lovers figure out what’s at the heart of this conspiracy in time to thwart it, or does this adventure end in a long-overdue funeral?
The Princess of Ruby Island
Every little girl dreams of being whisked away to be the princess of a magical world on their tenth birthday. But for Jessica Nyle, born on February 29th, finding herself in a strange magical realm on her tenth birthday at age 40 is surprising, to say the least. And what they don’t tell little girls about fantastical magical realms built from dreams is that they’re prone to environmental instability, which can cause mass famine. And that magical limitations can cause factionalisation and extreme power imbalances, which leads to oppression and war. And that the idea of an island made entirely of ruby sounds fantastic, but ruby loses its charm and value as a gemstone when it’s literally the ground you walk on and, as a probably unimportant side detail, one thing you can’t do with ruby is grow crops in it. So that’s less than ideal.
This isn’t the whimsical adventure that mass media had lead Jessica to expect as a child, where all you needed to do to save the world was be brave and true and hold love in your heart and believe in yourself despite everything. Being the Princess of Ruby Island is a dirty job that requires cunning, hard work, political acumen, and a whole lot of luck. And it certainly doesn’t help that forces festering on Ruby Island were quite comfortable filling the previous power vacuum and would very much prefer it if there was no Princess bustling about and messing up their plans.
This is gonna take the power of a LOT of friendships to sort out.
The Cinder Boy
Owen is a wizard’s servant, and has been since he was old enough to walk. He doesn’t remember the mother who abandoned him there or the world she came from, and has never really thought much on the issue. Until the day the old crone comes to the wizard’s tower and, defying the wizard who tries to throw her out (Owen had never, until that moment, see anybody successfully defy the wizard), tells him that his mother was one of the Cinderellae, the hidden organisation of destiny-weavers named for the punishment doled out to them if they are caught – to be burned alive on the town pyre. Other people, she tells him, will try to get their hooks in him, and this tower can no longer keep him safe.
With the help of three friendly breezes trapped in the bodies of helpful mice and a shard of mage glass for protection, Owen must journey into the dangerous world that the wizard’s tower has sheltered him from his whole life. He’s watched the wizard weave people’s destinies for years, but until now, he’s never had to weave his own.
He’d better figure it out fast. Because danger is brewing in the kingdom, and he seems to be somebody’s pawn. He just wishes he knew whose.
Drops of Blood Like Neon Stars
This one is already being written on and off in my free time. Promoting it to main story would allow me to spend my full time on it and ensure weekly updates.
Vampires are good at stability. Life in the Scarlet City has been stable, despite the competing blood factions, for a long time, as has been their mutually beneficial relationship with the human city above. But when a drastic political play by young vampires coincides with a mysterious slate of human murders, Lissa needs to find out what’s going on and put a stop to it before the City is plunged into all-out war.
Holy Light
It’s been 164 years since the Rapture, and 157 years since the end of the world, but humanity’s still doing what humanity does best: holding on. Ageless and resistant to damage and disease, the people who had the luck and quick thinking to hide themselves from God’s purifying light as it uplifted every soul it touched a century and a half ago live on in the dark, doing their best to keep going forward in a world trying to end. But with no new souls coming into Earth, no children have been born since the end. And all it takes to be abducted to heaven is one mistake, one small kiss of sunlight. Eventually, humanity is going to lose this fight.
But Claire thinks she might have found an answer. A way to bring new children into the world once more, a way to return to the flow of normal time. And if it works, then just maybe, they can save the world.
I Am Not The Chosen One
Hannah is having mysterious dreams of a gate on a hill. Jake is getting urgent messages from a strange man in the mirror. Victoria might have accidentally summoned a demon, and Blaire is the luckiest unlucky seventeen year old in the world and has almost died three times this week alone, which is great for his tiktok career but less so for his long-term survival. But the thing that’s really interfering with all of their lives is the shadowy organisation of strangers who keep trying to abduct them.
They’re looking for the Chosen One. The Chosen One, firstborn child of the lost princess of Vanalia, needs to go with them through a portal to a magical land to save everyone there from a tyrannical dark lord, but anyone other than the Chosen One would almost certainly die. Hannah, Jake, Victoria and Blaire are pretty sure that none of them are the Chosen One, but the strangers seem dead set on trying anyway. The only way out seems to be to find this lost princess or her firstborn child for these strangers, and send them off on a magical coming-of-age adventure. But how does one even go about tracking down a Chosen One?

Mephiles and Infinite have a lot more in common then most think...
I'm a bit rusty of my Mephiles lore but bare with me.
Both infinite and Mephiles have a lot of similar traits/story beats I don't see lot of people talking about, so I wanted to compile some.
Both were separated from loved one(s) by force (Mephiles to Iblis & Infinite to the jackal squad)
Their backstories are very intimately chained to Shadow (Shadow sealing Meph away & Shadow killing Infinite's squad)
Both were experimented on my older male scientists (Duke of Soleanna & Eggman)
They both torment or harm Sonic during their story (Mephiles kills Sonic & Infinite imprisons Sonic)
Both DESPISE Shadow (obviously)
Shadow doesn't remember them (Mephiles due to the timeline & infinite due to not being 'important' in Shadow's mind)
Both are extremely smart and determined (Mephiles is the mind and will of a literal GOD & Infinite was strong enough to take Sonic down, but also led a group of highly trained mercenaries)
Both are after revenge (obviously)
They can both summon minions (Mephiles' little nightmares & Infinite's illusions)
Both come from disliked games (called the worst in the series)
They both have crystals/gems in their designs (crystalline form & Phantom Ruby)
I just love them both and don't see a lot of people give them the credit they deserve!

Steven Universe x Danny Phantom Crossover
Tumblr media
Dannys parents instead of hunting ghosts are studying otherworldly technology. They find a kindergarten and dismantle an injector. They also try to study the warp pads.
Not entirely sure how it’ll work yet, but the thought is is that they make a machine and Danny accidentally turns it on, and it was similar if not nearly the same as an injector. But instead of injecting deep into the earth, it hits Dannys flesh and it kills him/revives him. And he has a gem now.
He’ll still be a sort of halfa like Steven, and taking into account how beat up Steven is when the gem is taken from him, I don’t think either of them would survive long without their gems.
I chose turquoise for his gem because it is green like ectoplasm and it has some symbolism for death in both Egyptian and some native cultures. So it seemed appropriate.
If he were to go to homeworld he’s techinically be in blue diamonds court. Though there isn’t a turquoise gem there. So I’m thinking that he’s the only one. I’m not sure what his role in gem society would be but turquoise also has symbolism or protection. So maybe he’d be like ruby as a fighter/bodyguard.
The only weapon I’ve seen with a hand gem is a glove so that’s what i gave him. It also suits his fighting style of just hitting people

It's been a hot minute since I've posted a gemsona. I have a few cool ideas that I've wanted to do for a while but haven't really had the time. The only reason I did this was because I needed a bit of destress from studying for finals (wish me luck!). I guess I'll go into the lore info now lmao
Gem: Moonstone
Gender: Female
Court: Any
Purpose: Sings for the Diamonds to entertain them.
Weapon(s)/Power(s): Powerful voice that can reach deafening levels if the gem so chooses
Voice: Michella Moss
I had this idea for Moonstone when I decided I wanted a gem that's whole purpose was to sing for the Diamonds. I know that the pearls have already been used for that (such as for What's the Use of Feeling Blue) but I figured that the pearls would only be used when a moonstone wasn't immediately available. I designed her based off an opera singer because I feel like that kind of music would be something the Diamonds would listen to. My very first draft of her was her head looking like a music note but I couldn't really figure out how to incorporate that into her design without having it look awkward so I resorted to the spheres because I felt they still looked alien and other-worldly. I also debated whether she should be a fusion of Sapphire and Pearl because honestly, the design ended up looking like it. I ultimately decided against it because I felt like I could do more with her character if she was separate from the gems we already know, but I wouldn't be opposed to a fusion of Sapphire and Pearl being a moonstone, much like Sapphire and Ruby form a garnet, which already exists on Homeworld. Also, I imagine her voice would have the ability to be deafening loud, like a banshee. Finding her voice was tough for me. I had considered Kristen Chenoweth for a while but I felt like her voice was too high for me. I also looked at Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins), Cynthia Erivo (Harriet), Emma Rossum (Phantom of the Opera), and Emily Rohm (Ride the Cyclone). I eventually settled on Michella Ross (FNAF voice of Ballora) because she has such a mature, deep, and sultry voice. This was pretty close to what I wanted Moonstone to sound like.
Total drawing time took about 2 hours, but technically the whole process took like 3 years since I came up with her concept in 2021.
On a sorta related note, I wanna start using text watermarks because they're easier to read than my signature so if my artwork is ever stolen, I can easily be identified by just looking at the watermark.

when you accidentally acquire a child in an alternate dimension but you still have a job to do
basic-ish explanation of the au under cut (it's long)
teehee i made a second sonic au focused around zero and venice :)
this is post forces where zero, no longer infinite but still with the phantom ruby, ends up in an alternate future of "what if the war continued and the world was destroyed" and he meets venice, a child with a god sealed in a gem in their forehead
the gem is the only remains of solaris despite being destroyed and snuffed out, gods don't die easily. this gives venice limited power over time and fire, and even altered their body by giving them wings reminiscent of solaris' wings. because of the time altering abilities of, as i'll be calling it, the solar orb, time is completely frozen in venice's future further limiting their powers.
enter zero, who ended up in the frozen future through means i have not figured out yet dw about it, and as soon as another living being started existing in said future, time started again. venice finds him almost immediately and attaches to him because when you and this stranger are the only two people in the world, you stick together, much to zero's annoyance in the beginning. venice also recognizes the phantom ruby as another sealed god (a friend suggested calling the god valtron but rn i'd prefer it stay unnamed as neither character know its name, hell even solaris lost its name)
so it's basically just these two lonely people learning to trust each other and survive in a world now ticking along (venice doesn't remember anything before the solar orb and has a messed up sense of time either way) though they do eventually get out of venice's future and into the main timeline during the restoration and zero takes up mercenary work again, just under a different alias and mask than infinite (the first one), cause yknow, he'd be hunted down probably. venice wears a mask pretty much identical to zero (or null as the alias yes i know very clever) cause zero is fully aware venice looks very similar to silver (also a note that venice can make their wings essentially disappear, though they just turn into orbs against their back where back quills would be)

So, How About that Magic System?
This is the first in (what I hope is) a series of posts regarding various topics regarding the worldbuilding in my Sonic Awakening fic. I don't think I'll be able to cover everything I've brewed up in proper context within the text and I would still like to share it. I'll try to avoid spoilers as much as possible, but each post will assume you've read through the most recent chapter. In this case, Chapter 13.
Types of Energy
Like canon, chaos energy is the McGuffin that powers most of the super powers and super science in Awakening. However it's not the only type of energy present.
Chaos Energy
Chaos Energy (not to be confused with the god Chaos) is the energy of will and is present to some extent in all sentient beings and is, in fact, what grants sentience to an extent. The 'will to power' if you will. In this way, a person's chaos energy could be analogous to a soul, but the amount a person has in them can change overtime.
Every person has some baseline capacity for chaos energy, but a select few are 'sensitive' to it. At present, these would be our boys Sonic, Shadow, and Knuckles.
The Chaos Emeralds contain large amounts of chaos energy and can be drained with use, temporarily losing their bright hues. When combined they allow the performance of miracles, turning the will of the user into reality. After this they tend to disperse themselves to recharge.
The Master Emerald sits (normally) on Angel Island and keeps it afloat in the sky. Until recently it had played host two both Chaos and Tikal. The gem has always had a 'personality' about it and fills those around it with a fervent desire for action. It seems to have a thing for Shadow for some reason. It's not mutual.
Ruby Energy (2 types)
Ruby Energy, as emitted by the Phantom Ruby and the (so called) Nascent Phantom Ruby, is the energy of imagination. This allows the user to perform miracles that defy reality. Not great when in the wrong hands. Are both Ruby's the same gemstone at different times in its existence? Can it travel through time seemingly at random? Yeah, probably. It doesn't require your understanding or consent.
Ruby Energy reacts destructively with Chaos Energy. That's probably not a big deal, right?
Gaia (2 types)
I haven't quiet settled on what I want to do with Gaia energy just yet so I'm just going to say Dark and Light Gaia energy is a thing. Yup.
I'm leaning towards Gaia energy being all about desire, but won't need it until story #3.
Chaos Sensitive Individuals
Individuals who have the ability to utilize chaos energy, either from the ambient air or from their own reserves, to do impossible feats. In the past, they were much more prevalent but in the time of the story, only four three remain. Damn, all males and two of them are gay.
Sonic
Our boy blue is a natural. He has no idea who it works but he just goes with it. He has a large reserve of chaos energy and is able to produce prodigious amounts by running quickly. His rate of production is directly tied to his heart rate.
Shadow
With chaos energy worked into his entire being at the point of his creation, Shadow has massive reserves and suck in ambient chaos energy when needed. He has a practical understanding of chaos energy.
Knuckles
The last of the great Echidna and Guardian of the Master Emerald has spent his entire life training and honing his ability to utilize chaos energy, informed by centuries of Echidna writings. The effortless and flippant way that Sonic and Shadow use chaos energy irks him on occasion.
Silver
Who?
What about the Robots?
So if chaos energy is basically a soul and determines one's ability to enforce one's will on the world, what about our lovable homicidal children of Dr. Robotnik, Metal Sonic and Sage? Welp, what powers these lovable scamps? Chaos Drives. Do with that what you will. No themes of existential dread to be found here.
I'll probably come back here and expand as needed. If you've got any questions, drop me an ask.
