One of my fave narratives of the writer's strike was watching every studio-friendly Hollywood news source go ":( this movie was delayed due to the mean ol' strike", meanwhile random Wallace and Gromit-obsessed Twitter account DiscussingFilm would include "because studio executive, [executive name], refuses to pay workers fairly out of greed" on literally every piece of news, no matter how tangential to the strike, and anyway I'm pleased to see they're still at it

CLIFFORD IRVING
CLIFFORD IRVING
1930-2017
AMERICAN WRITER, FRAUD, WROTE A FAKE AUTOBIOGRAPHY ON HOWARD HUGHES
In 1972, Clifford managed to convince the American publishing company McGraw-Hill that Howard Hughes, America’s wealthiest man, wanted him to write his autobiography. Clifford’s evidence for this was a letter he claimed that was written by Hughes and said that Hughes sent him audiotapes as well as a manuscript.
Howard Hughes, was a plane fanatic and one of the richest men in America, he also had been a recluse since 1958 and difficult to be contacted.
Giving Irving the benefit of the doubt, the publisher’s editors invited Irving to their New York office and produced contracts for both Irving and Hughes to sign. Irving’s friend Richard Suskind forged Hughes’ signature. McGraw-Hill didn’t look into it any further and sent Irving and Hughes cheques, Irving’s wife deposited the checks into a Swiss bank account that she opened under the name ‘Helga R. Hughes’.
Irving and Suskind got their hands on an unfinished manuscript which was written by Hughes’ former business manager, James Phelan; Phelan had no knowledge of this. Large parts of this manuscript were used for the autobiography and Irving claimed it as his own.
Irving delivered the completed manuscript to the publishers in 1971, and they planned to publish it a year later.
Hughes’ lawyers heard of this and intervened, however; McGraw-Hill continued to trust Irving and believed the writing samples were authentic. Hughes had no choice but to come out of seclusion for two months before the books release date on March 1972. Hughes held a telephone press conference with reporters and denounced the book as fake and McGraw-Hill finally rescinded Irving’s contract.
The police got involved and instead of going to trial, Irving pled guilty and was ordered to pay back the advance and sentenced to 30 months in penitentiary. He filed for bankruptcy that same year. His wife was sentenced to 2 months imprisonment and Suskind was given 6 months for theft and conspiracy.
Irving’s story The Hoax was published in 1981 and the film adaption THE HOAX was released in 2006 starring Richard Gere as Irving.

For anyone keeping up with The Hoax on AO3...
Chapter 16 might be delayed. 😬😬
I've been sick- technically, I'm still a little sick... But I'm also mentoring at a FIRST Robotics competition this weekend.
If time allows, I'll put it up on time. If not, it'll be posted sometime next week.
Thanks for understanding!
