Thinking about the themes of disability in httyd that are present even before Hiccup becomes an amputee; existing in a world that hates and doesn't welcome you but refusing to change yourself for the convenience of others, instead stubbornly making accommodations for yourself where you can

once again reigning myself in from getting involved in reddit discourse over the necessity of deeply repressed and closeted characters onscreen. this will not lead to a productive discussion close tab <3

Thinking about episode 9 of A Kind of Spark.
-
I love how Keedie reengages with an old interest to help herself recover. That is a real thing that autistics do a lot to help themselves feel better. Whether it's an object that we love, or a topic that we used to learn everything about, going back to those old interests can make us feel safe and whole again.
I love that the show had that. I'm so used to stories about autistics that use the same five tropes over and over again (which isn't bad...but it starts to feel impersonal). You don't really see autistic characters do things like get burnt out and then recover with a special interest. I'm so happy about that being portrayed.

okay i get it but i also think its important to acknowledge that there is a difference between knowing from an audience standpoint that a character should be queer VS it firmly being acknowledged verbally within the narrative as a solid aspect of that character's identity irrefutably
#this reminds me of keeley jones from ted lasso like i get it shes “always” been bisexual but its so hard to tell if the writer is being#sincere in their representation or not#people joke about queerness bc haha lol look a gay person or look hot super model slept with woman#in keeley's case it was literally a joke intended to shock rebecca like that is not confirmation that is a joke the writer is making#it needs to be said or expressed in a way that is outside of a throwaway haha gotcha joke#the doctor has been kissed by men and kissed men in moments of celebration and theyve been laughed off#hes made comments that the audience is SUPPOSED TO think are jokes. queer audiences just see past that and straight audiences dont#its important that it was not only said but talked about even if it was in passing. it wasnt a punchline or the set up for a joke#donna comments that a man is hot > the doctor agrees enthusiastically that the man was really hot >#they both acknowledge the doctors attraction to men and his openness about it > donna says it was always obvious#its not about creating his queerness its always been there its about finally being in a place to say it out loud#from a narrative standpoint you could say now he's the kind of person who talks openly about his attraction and feelings#from an audience standpoint i hope we can acknowledge that its bc they couldnt outright say he was bisexual/lesbian/queer/trans/nombinary#now they can#thats the difference i think#doctor who

one thing i love about this fandom is that while we're still miles behind where we should be in terms of 'men don't have to all have the exact same body type to be beautiful' and while they're all, yes, tall and conventionally attractive
we have a tangible example of four men who look different. who present different. but are all admired and seen as beautiful and attractive and whatever other adjectives you'd rather use. who are real and human and that means their bodies change sometimes and sometimes we even get to hear how they feel about that, a chance to care, a chance to see them as real humans--and they let us into that, to some extent, but also, there's a capability of the fandom to see beauty without comparison here too. and it's showing. and yes it's not perfect. but our little brothers (and please don't think I'm just talking about cis boys too, I'm not) can grow up and see that you can look different ways. have different colour skin and hair and eyes and different builds and styles and whatnot and be attractive to millions.

I really hate how people act like Ben ur typical “white male” love interest. This is Mindy and she always projects her characters into BJ.
But Ben is Jewish so to me, seeing him be a leading men, be desired and get the girl is great when media often projects Jewish men as undesirable and there’s a lot to say about people making “jokes” that are borderline anti semitic when referring to Ben or the actor and yes calling him “ugly” rubs me the wrong way.
100% completely and totally agree. As a jewish person myself it’s been super frustrating and hurtful seeing people have really just bad takes about Ben and invalidating his space in this story as a Jewish man. Because newsflash he is also a part of an oppressed community and calling him another “white” man is super hurtful to the Jewish people who enjoy this show and feel represented by him. And yeah yes it is borderline antisemitic and casually antisemitic. Being kind and respectful even if a ship isn’t endgame is kinda like basic decency that I wish more people had!

Me wondering when people are going to stop expecting every piece of queer media to deeply adress every nuance of the queer experience when it was actually just built to be the happy tv show etc fluff that the gays never seem to get in the media

man.. shipping with characters from movies is so hard..
#ash rambles 💚#I'm the kind of person thats super particular about my self inserts#i need them to be lore accurate and have super fleshed out backstories. i aspire to create the characters i want to see in media#and they will always be their own characters before they are me#that being said. i have such a hard time making an s/i when there's no wiggle room#this new guy I'm crushing on.. the story is so fast paced#and he's really in love with another girl#i love him and all that. but it feels like there's no room for me. that just pisses me off! ugh!#i feel the same way about k.ili too though not to such a great extent#idk man. i just hate when this kind of thing doesnt work right#writing my inserts is my greatest passion and i truly am proud of some of my lore#I'll always care for them as characters more than as a vessel for me to kiss pretty characters and i know all my friends can agree that 90%#of what I've sent them is writing about my s/is and not my f/os LMAAAOOO#but yeah. it's so hard for me to figure out where my self insert goes in this movie#also um. i dont want to have an s/i just be a useless side character that just stands there. i know this might sound silly but#as a brown woman who didnt grow up with much representation and to this fucking day has not seen a single punjabi woman in the media i grew#up watching.. i dont want my characters to be useless#ugh sorry I'm rambling sorry for being so negative#anyhow. I'm almost done with the first movie. crush boy is so handsome!!! gamers idk how long i can keep his identity a secret#hahaha what if you were a blacksmith and i was a cute writer and... and we kissed..? haha jk..... unless..?

i would like to know more about the mobility aid whump !
Alright!
Disclaimer: Please notice that I'm going to talk only from personal experience, so what I'm saying might not apply to everyone!
(For context! My condition is characterised by extremely frequent and painful dislocations, so my aids aim mostly to avoid that or to give me the time and stability needed to recover from bad dislocations! Aside from wearing braces daily, and from these acute episode recovery times, I live a very active life, so the issues I've encountered are radically different from someone with a SCI, for example.)
Now, let's get straight into the whump (on top of the whump your poor fave is already experiencing):
-Braces: Fantastic, fantastic invention. They make everything easier, but can be awful if they're not used carefully. Personally, I wear AFOS, (they basically keep your ankles in place and prevent things like foot drop, therefore reducing the likelyhood of tripping on your own feet). Now, here's the issue. Shorts are a terrible idea. When it's really hot and you want to wear shorts and you're planning to go for a walk, the only way to prevent chafing your shins to the point of bleeding is wearing knee high socks. 🥲
Same thing goes for all rigid braces that come in contact directly with the skin, like knee braces and rigid corsets.
And while braces can help a lot with stability, if used improperly they can lead to issues like atrophy.
Also, not whump, but honorable mention for finger splints. The metal ones are sooo comfy and make your character look extra badass. Just saying.
-Canes/crutches: Blisters, blisters, blisters. Blisters and tendinitis to no end. When canes are used only for balance, it's not a huge issue, but if you have to put pressure on them (this applies more to crutches than canes tbh), you tend to get blisters all over your hands and tendinitis in your wrists. Especially with crappy hospital crutches. That's why most long term users tend to have their own customized aids. It's a game changer, honestly.
Also consider. A character who faints often using canes to give themselves enough stability to safely get to the ground instead of faceplanting.
Last thing: perpetually cold fingers during the winter.
-Wheelchairs: This only applies to manual wheelchairs. I know nothing about electric ones.
Hospital wheelchairs, once again, are terrible. They will most definitely give you terrible sores on your palms from propelling yourself. The pushrims BURN your skin if you only think of doing sudden movements. They're heavy, bulky, get stuck everywhere, and there's an extra chance of ruining your furniture. 😮‍💨
Active/custom wheelchairs, on the other hand are a whole other universe. They're tailored to the user's needs, they are ultra light and compact, and super easy to maneuver, and you can actually do wheelies in them to roll over obstacles or difficult terrains (unlike hospital chairs). However, this makes them less stable and a higher fall risk.
Not to mention the perpetually frozen fingers during the winter months (hello frostbite!).
Due to inactivity, a whumpee in a wheelchair is more likely to feel cold, and to develope atrophy and muscular issues. Not to mention, wearing and tearing of arm/shoulder joints and contracture of the shoulders and back from the constant self propelling.
Not to mention, pressure sores! That's pure hell to put your whumpee through, and potentially dangerous!
