04x02 - The Three Wise Monkeys
First S4 episode filmed. Filmed mid May 1988.
Armed robberies are rife in Sun Hill and Ted is grumpy. Yesterday he was moaning about being deskbound and today he's moaning about too many jobs at once. When they arrive at the scene it appears that their suspects have carjacked a woman in a blue Ford.
Two DC's are coming from Somerset to collect a prisoner of Ted's that he's already had in Custody for 28 hours. Ted wants another 24 hours to hold him so he can question him but Christine and Bob won't hear of it.
Tom is clearly still struggling as he struggles to calm his breathing while dealing with coordinating officers to find the Ford Sierra. Brownlow is also in CAD so he's trying his hardest to keep it under wraps. The mentioning of guns has quite obviously unnerved him.
Ted and Mike are driving around on the off-chance of seeing the car until its location is reported. Ted is irritated that 'the carrot crunchers are on the way down with a warrant' for his suspect. Ted spots a blue Sierra and 'camouflages' the car so they can take a drive-by.
Tumblr media
Does he carry these around with him always? 🤣🤣 TSG locate the car as they drive by making Ted and Mike take large sighs of relief!
Bob and Alec discuss Tom as both have noticed that he's twitchy and has a bottle of alcohol in his locker. Bob says he'll talk to him. Christine catches part of the conversation and says she'd appreciate it if he did talk to him because there's only so long she can turn a blind eye. She then asks Alec to treat the Somerset transfer 'by the book'. Bob tells Alec he could get arrested for what he's thinking when Christine walks off and Alec adds that he could 'get seriously out of order with her'.
Tumblr media
Yorkie and June speed off to find the car with TSG on board. Yorkie follows to observe as he was told to by Brownlow but TSG claim he has the three wise monkeys in the back and so should follow faster because they can't stop the car from this far behind. They patronise June and tell her to be a good girl and not report it to Sun Hill and one of them will 'show her his piece later'.
Tumblr media
The Somerset boys are charmed by Viv and keep trying to chat her up - she's not having any of it. Christine warns Jim that Ted has a short time left to update the file on the suspect because he's going back to Somerset whether Ted likes it or not.
The pursuit continues around a car park with Yorkie and June almost getting shot as the suspect fires at the windscreen. It's a farce from start to end. TSG are locked in the back and can't get out to fire back. When they manage to, Yorkie is inches away from losing his head when the one who patronised June fires without enough warning. Yorkie's revenge is perfect.
Tumblr media
Brownlow storms through the station shouting with Alec telling Jim he hasn't heard him lose his nut like that in years. Jim asks what's wrong but before Alec can tell him they're found earwigging by Christine. (Hello Derek just behind Christine who has just arrived!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brownlow is angry that the officers got so close to the armed men and that they almost got shot and orders Derek to set up a meeting with all concerned for 1pm in his office.
In CAD Tom is falling apart as Ken and Reg chat. He turns away from them to try hide a panic attack. "You're alright, it's over... no guns... there's no guns, it's over!!" he keeps trying to tell himself before he tries to get in his locker for a drink. Bob finds him and reassures him that he's alright and tries to calm his breathing. "What's happening to me, Bob?!" Tom sobs, clinging to him.
Tumblr media
In the canteen, Yorkie and June are clearly shellshocked. Christine asks June to follow her out to comfort her privately so no one else sees her cry, "Let it go, there's no men in here..." The TSG Sgt asks Yorkie to not make a complaint against the officer for firing without warning at a departing suspect. Yorkie reminds him they were told to keep a distance away and that he almost shot him and could have shot a passerby. The Sgt promises he'll discipline him when they return to TSG and he'll square what happened with Brownlow as long as Yorkie keeps it quiet. Reluctantly he agrees and the man calms the situation in the meeting as promised.
Tumblr media
Ted pulls in to the yard in time to see his suspect being taken away. He shouts at the two officers to take him back inside and the officer tells Ted to back off or he'll bounce his head around the yard. The suspect breaks the tension and Ted storms inside to deal with Jim for "letting him go". Jim tells him he has nothing after keeping the prisoner for 30 hours and Mike tells him he's made his point. Ted tells Jim to continue. Jim says it's easier to work with the system than bend it. 'Surely you learned that through Galloway's mistakes?!" They've really made Ted look like a poor copper for this changeover of DI's. Clearly the bending to fit the storyline started early (!) (Also wonder if they were trying to infer that Roy left under a cloud or if that referred to Roy as a whole?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tom takes a breather in the men's toilets when Ted arrives with his hipflask. He offers it to Tom who sidesteps him. Jim in turn goes to Uncle Bob and tells him he thinks CID might have been a big mistake. Bob tells him that rollockings happen, it won't be the first or last time. Jim thinks he's going to have to watch his back and Bob tells him that Ted is not a backstabber and - if it was the right thing to do, he has nothing to fear from Ted. Jim confesses he told Ted to work with the system. Bob laughs and tells him he's been telling him that for years. "But I'm just a DC." Bob reassures him that Ted would be the first to acknowledge that rank doesn't have the monopoly on being right.
Ted goes to talk to Christine about his suspect being taken by Somerset officers. She closes the door behind him and tells him that they haven't had much time to work out how the other works but he left Alec in an awkward position with no way of keeping the man longer. Ted insists he gets results but Christine points out her pips means her way is the way to go.
The TSG officer thanks Yorkie and June for not telling Brownlow what really happened. June scoffs and asks if he still wants to show her his piece? "Hard-nosed bitch!" he spits after her as both walk off to go sit with Tom, showing him their support.

SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL, SPEAK NO EVIL + ASTROLOGY:
Tumblr media
There is an ancient symbol that lingers at the edges of human consciousness, three monkeys, each representing a gesture of refusal. Onwe covers its eyes, another its mouth, the last its ears. “See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil,” they say.
At first glance, it may appear a simple morality tale: an instruction to remain pure, untouched by the wickedness of the world. But deeper contemplation reveals a labyrinth of meanings, and in each meaning, a mirror to the soul. Especially the darkness of the soul.
To see no evil is not to deny the existence of evil, but to recognize the subtle tyranny of perception. The eyes are doors through which the outer world floods in, often uninvited. To close them against evil is to acknowledge that perception itself can wound us, that to allow the image of cruelty to remain in the mind is to give it life newly within. Yet, is blindness a hidden moral compass, or is it ignorance? In refusing to see, do we preserve innocence or betray reality?
To speak no evil is to understand the terrible power of language. Speech is the most direct bridge between inner thought and outer consequence. Words are seeds: once spoken, they fall into the soil of other minds, where they may blossom into hatred, love, fear, or hope. To guard the mouth is to achieve a profound form of discipline, to recognize that a careless word can be a kind of violence. And yet, silence too can be a form of cruelty. In not naming evil, do we become an ally of it? Is speech a sword to be drawn carefully or a flame to be hidden under fear?
To hear no evil is perhaps the most mysterious of the three. The ears, unlike the eyes, cannot close themselves. Sound infiltrates even the most resistant soul. To refuse to hear evil is thus an act of internal fortitude, a rejection not of sound itself, but of allowing its poison to take root. But again, we must ask: is refusal to hear a path to peace, or a retreat from the duty of bearing witness?
In the end, perhaps the truest teaching is this: Evil exists not merely outside of us, but within. The covering hands of the monkeys are a reminder that the first evil to confront is the one born in our own perceptions, our own words, our own listening. The work is not to erase evil from the world, but to refuse to let it be mirrored in our own being.
Tumblr media
What we might learn from this: Everything is true but nothing is true. As Meurcault by Albert Camus from The Stranger believes.
Tumblr media
In what placements we see these archetypes:
SEE NO EVIL
or 12th House placements/ Pisces placements/ Moon + Venus Dominants
• Neptune governs spiritual vision, compassion, and illusion—choosing to “see” with the soul, not just the eyes.
• 12th House is the realm of hidden truths and the unconscious; avoiding evil through spiritual detachment.
• Also relates to Venus in Libra: choosing to see beauty, not ugliness or conflict.
• Moon in Pisces – highly empathic, may emotionally “tune out” harsh visuals or disturbing realities.
• Could be seen in Venus in Sagittarius – chooses to focus on the bigger picture, beauty, and philosophy over drama and detail.
• Ascendant in Cancer or Pisces – sensitive to energy; filters external visuals to protect emotional well-being.
•Sun in 12th House - Identity partially hidden or inward-facing. May avoid confronting external ego conflicts—sees through intuition instead of confrotation
• South Node in Libra/ North Node in Aries - Has a karmic pattern of avoiding conflict or seeing only the “nice” side of things. Soul evolution comes through seeing harsh truth with courage.
HEAR NO EVIL:
Mercury and Moon relevancy + 3rd House
• Mercury in Taurus – listens slowly and selectively; dislikes mental clutter or drama.
• Mercury in Scorpio - Hears everything, including subtext, lies, or manipulation. Chooses silence unless truth must be revealed. Rejects superficial or noisy input.
• Mercury in Pisces/Cancer (Very evident)
• Mercury retrograde (in any sign) - Naturally inward-facing thinker. Processes speech internally first, often skeptical of outer input. Tends to mistrust surface noise.
• Moon in Libra - Needs harmony in relationships. May ignore conflict or negativity to keep peace; dislikes loud or offensive speech.
• Moon in Aquarius - Detaches from emotional noise. Can observe drama without internalizing it. Hears with logic more than feeling.
• Chiron in Gemini or 3rd House - Deep wound around speech and hearing—may come from childhood ridicule, harsh words, or chaotic environments. Healing comes through mindful listening and silence.
• South Node in Leo/ North Node in Aquarius - Soul path involves detaching from ego-driven noise and moving toward collective insight. Learns to filter personal drama out.
SPEAK NO EVIL:
Mainly Saturn/Mercury + Silence is Power and Pluto Influences
• Mercury in Virgo - Speaks precisely and purposefully. Avoids exaggeration, slander, or emotional drama. Can be critical, but often internally. May over-edit speech.
• Mercury in Scorpio - Holds secrets. Speech is powerful, controlled, and often laced with deeper insight. Won’t speak unless it’s meaningful—or piercing.
• Mercury in Capricorn - Deliberate, serious communicator. Avoids frivolous speech. Speaks when necessary, usually to add value, structure, or truth.
• Mercury Conjuct Saturn - Speech is cautious, filtered, and often burdened with self-monitoring. Tendency to be quiet, thoughtful, or struggle to express freely—may “err on the side of silence.”
• Mercury Square Saturn - Feels responsibility around words. May have learned hard lessons through speech (guilt, backlash, miscommunication). Leads to cautious speech patterns.
• Saturn in 3rd House - Structured, sometimes sparse communication. Learns lessons around restraint in speech, or may experience karmic restrictions in early life communication.
• Mercury in 12th House - Inner dialogue is rich, but speech may be hidden, poetic, or secretive. Communicates from behind a veil; avoids directness.
• Moon in Scorpio/12th House - Keeps feelings under lock and key. Emotionally silent when hurt. Speech emerges only when trust is deep.
• South Node in Gemini/North Node in Sagittarius - Past life tendency to overtalk, gossip, or scatter information. Evolution involves learning to speak with higher purpose—or to embrace silence and spiritual speech.
• Pluto in 3rd House - Speaks very little—or very powerfully. Can be a word alchemist. Uses silence or speech to influence others deeply.

So I came upon the realization that the Three Wise Warriors (my OCs) would fit so well in a cross-over episode with the turtles, and uh
It's the silliest thing, but I love it

I know people like to give Hylia designs a lot of eyes because Christianity™️
But consider instead: Mouths
her statue has only a smile visible
her whole thing is about hearing her voice
Godess Harp + Music
Zelda tends to be capable of telepathic speak in some form
the two games where Links connection to Zelda is important to the plot both put an emphasis on her smiling
her big statues in Skyward Sword straight up mechanically sing
and also: Eyes are Ganon's thing (and by extension Demise)
Also the juxtaposition between the "classic Christian divinity" symbol of eyes on Demise/Ganon and the "classic eldritch being" symbol of mouths on Hylia would be pretty neat

Hear no evil. Speak no evil. See no evil.
Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka!
They're the Descendants in the Isle of Dawn. Three friends that appear to be young men that are the self-proclaimed welcome committee of the isle. They all look up to Betelgeuse highly as a senior.
They are named after the three stars in the Orion Belt, and are themed after the three wise monkeys. Also, all of them are fluent in sign language!
(More about them under the cut!)

These three are named after the stars in the Orion Belt and are themed after the three wise monkeys.
Tumblr media
Alnitak - "Hear no evil"
Alnitak is the most vocal of the group. He seems like a mischievous troublemaker, and he may talk bluntly, but he's actually pretty sweet. Sometimes he could be tactless but he almost always means well unless he thinks someone deserves the flak. Give him a ball of yarn and he's bound to knit you a warm sweater to cuddle in during the cold days.

Tumblr media
Alnilam - "Speak no evil"
Alnilam seems to be the voice of reason of the group. He is hard of hearing and mute, so he mostly communicates via sign language. He can't produce honking sounds on his own, so he uses his own personal instrument to alert/detect other sky kids. He may seem intimidating at first since he appears serious, but he's kind! He's always up to lend a helping hand to those who need it.
.·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ . .·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ . .·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ .
Tumblr media
Mintaka - "See no evil"
Mintaka is the quietest and shyest of the group. He often prefers to be on his own, but seemed to feel comfortable with his friends, Alnilam and Alnitak. He often appears aloof; unbeknownst to him, he has more than a few admirers from afar. Among the three, he's the first one to befriend Saiph because he's rather soft-spoken like a calm Rigel.
.·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ . .·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ . .·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ .

Three wise monkeys has been my favourite of the Owen and Andy big finish audios so far. Mild spoilers ahead.
Especially their love/hate bickering, the almost constant joking-not-joking flirting, and the fact that they just call each other out as fundamentally good men who care too much about their jobs which is why they wouldn't succeed in being greedy rich bastards (and why Owen won't actually leave Cardiff despite having grand plans). Also that Owen somehow, despite being dead, is the same disgusting and horny little gremlin he's always been (the sweets, 'porn is my porn, these days, actually'). Andy is such a stickler for the rules, Owen encourages him to live a little. Owen needs to be reined in and reminded that there are things, and people, worth the effort of carrying on, and Andy fills that role, whilst reassuring him that he hates him.
Also I cackled at the assertion that it's 'hot' that a female commanding officer is still called Sir.
I do ship it romantically, however, they are also my brOTP. I ship them being best mates, getting kebabs together and getting into trouble.
