Hi there, fellow readers and writers! I’m Claris (she/her).

I write a wide variety of works including poetry and fiction. I also post book reviews biweekly and fanfics weekly, though expect more of my focus to be on original works this year!

I published the first book in my murder mystery series, “Winner Takes All: A Harlow Mystery” in June 2022, and you can click here for more details about it! Current WIPS:

"An Engagement To Die For:” The sequel to “Winner Takes All,” the murder mystery that I self-published last year (June 2022)! Edits are now finalized, and I’m currently ramping up preparations for publication for this book! 

A fantasy novel inspired by the video game series King’s Quest. I am currently still writing its first draft and I’ve spoken a bit on this blog about how it’s going so far. I just finished writing the first draft in mid-February, so this WIP is on a break for now while I work on...

I also have other novels I’m writing during this time, butttt I won’t tell you what they are yet because they’re very early in the writing process. XD

Currently Pitching/Querying:

“Sadie’s Search For The Missing Necklace:” A kidlit fantasy book inspired by Gwyneth Rees’ Fairy Dust series and Daisy Meadows’ Rainbow Fairy series. As of this writing, I’ve attempted pitching “Sadie’s Search For The Missing Necklace” once, but had no success—so this book is returning tot the pitching/querying trenches!

Fanfiction:

You most likely know of my writing fanfiction for The Last Story, Bravely Default/Second, and Escape The Night.

I’m currently posting chapters for a The Last Story/Super Smash Bros. crossover fanfic called “Super Smash Bros: The Next Story!” You can read it on either Fanfiction.net or Archive Of Our Own! New chapters come weekly, and Chapter 20 will be the final chapter!

I also have been posting occasional oneshots as well.

Have I mentioned that I love my physical therapist?

She showed me this today

She uses it herself diagnostically but she mentioned that I am the first client she ever showed it to. I love this thing. Which I said and she nodded and said she thought I would like it.

This, for me, is doing some of the things the pain scale is just failing me at.

She showed it to me because I was talking to her about having an issue with giving a pain scale number because it is “split” as best I could describe it. I can tell that different elements of my pain are giving me different levels of pain and this radar chart lets me talk about it.

What we tend to think of as the 0 or 1 to 10 pain scale is that furthest dot on the example radar chart: Nociceptive / Physiological. She describes it as stubbing your toe, your body notes that input and its severity and sends that message up the line, saying I hurt and I hurt X amount, so that the brain can decide how to respond.

But she showed it to me because I was trying to convey to her that I’m noticing a split in the pain scale I use

My #1 post of 2022

I just heard the fan theory that the Borg are “farming” the Federation. Essentially attacking the Federation in ways they know will just barely fail in order to provoke the Federation to keep coming up with new tech that the Borg can still steal from single vessels. The Borg could beat the Federation if they deployed in full force but this way, they get all the technology that the Federation comes up with to fight them. This might be a standard Borg tactic. They just ping creative species until the advancements are tapped out and then they go full force assimilation.

And, having heard that, I think I like that better than a large chunk of stuff that has been done with the Borg in cannon at this point. That I find interesting.

The Tuesday Writeblr Review: Intro!

Good morning, Folks!  Welcome to The Tuesday Writeblr Review introduction post!  

I first brought up this idea with the fantastic @livingdeadwriteblr, my co-host for this project, because I wanted something similar to Storyteller Saturday or Wip Accountability Sunday to encourage actually writing, updating our wips, and interacting with each other that is available to people who are very busy on weekends, such as myself!  Let’s get into it, shall we?

How it works:

Respond to THIS POST in some way to be added to the participation list!  

Being on this list is what will let your fellow participants it’s okay to send you asks & otherwise engage with you under the umbrella of this project on Tuesdays!  Being on this list will also put you on the taglist for weekly wip update compilations and a monthly post of fresh asks to pick from!  

(Of course, you are also free to ask your fellow participants questions off the top of your own head!  It’s all about making progress on wips and starting conversations, my friends.)

We encourage you to interact with each other on Tuesdays and take the rest of the week to make some progress on your wip and post an update, the update just needs to be posted BEFORE the coming Monday and have both me (@lookslikechill) and @livingdeadwriteblr tagged in it to be included in the wip update compilation post the next Tuesday!!  That is the way it will work each and every week, as well.

Wip: Breathing Flowers

Words written this week: somewhere around 1.1k

Warning: mention of death and suicidal thoughts , also the ocs are having a flight

"Hyma. I loved you. Loved. And because of you I got this stupid disease. But not because of what you think. I loved Ethan too. And they loved you too! And they loved me too! Who am I kidding? Ethan probably still loves us. But you only love me. I got this stupid disease again just because I didn't wanted to broke their heart."

All this was said with such a plain tone. She had the surgery. And for the second time. Emotions and feelings are even harder for her to express now. I didn't know what to do.

"And you came here to confess? And left Ethan alone. I bet you told them you left. I bet they suffer a lot now. Hyma forget me. This won't happen. Better go back to Ethan. I don't want them to die because of something as stupid as love."

Screams. We screamed a lot. She told me everything. But I wasn't feeling guilty. It wasn't my fault I didn't love Ethan. You can't force love. They are stupid for not having that damn surgery.

Ian started laughing. She was still sounded like before, but the way her cold eyes looked at me made me shiver.

"Ethan wants to die for years. They wanted this for years before they met us. "

Notes: I'm tired. I'm almost done with Hyma's story and I'm glad. As for the context , the disease that they are talking about and that all three had is the Hanahaki Disease which if not treated can kill you.

“Your employer was shot,” she replied, choosing to omit he died. She didn't know company protocol and preferred to wait for the police, though everything would end up dealt in-house, anyway. Yueliang knew little about the dealings of chaebols and company politics, but she assumed it wouldn't be like the TV dramas. Judging from the secretary's behaviour the deceased wasn't well liked, or they were used to assassinations. I need to learn more about these people, though this company may no longer be required reading with the boyfriend's death. “Please inform the police to canvass the building opposite this one. There is a shattered window in the stairway between floors twenty-one and twenty-three. They should check the CCTV.”

“Will Deputy Director Kim need medical assistance?” Spurred to action, the secretary grew more lifelike, going back to her desk and picking up the phone.

A medical examiner would be more suitable. She nodded. “An ambulance should attend. Please inform me when the police arrive. I'll lock the door until then to preserve the location.” She didn't wait for an answer this time, but the unhappy look on the secretary's face was an intriguing reaction.

Yueliang shut and locked the door, then turned back to assess Miss Park. She had her head out of the bin by now and was sitting on the floor behind the upturned table. She made for a pathetic figure with her tear-stained face and slouched posture. She'd kicked her boots off at some point during Yueliang's conversation with the secretary and curled her red painted toes into the plush carpet like a cat kneading. “Miss Park.” Yueliang crouched beside her and put a hand to her forehead. “How are you feeling?”

“Awful,” she croaked, sniffing. “I'm so embarrassed.”

“It's a natural reaction to stress,” Yueliang replied in a soothing voice. “You’re not injured?”

Miss Park shook her head. “You saved me.” She dipped her head. “Thank you.” She sniffed again and said, “Is Deputy Director Kim okay?”

She hasn't realised. “I've asked for medical assistance,” she replied, avoiding the truth.

TTWR Update: Still no freakin’ title

Roshi nodded, lowering his eyes to burrow deep holes into the cracked, dry ground. “Give them some time to mourn. An hour, at least, to lay their families and friends to rest.”

Ebe nodded and went off to inform the people of their decision. Roshi stayed, on his knees, letting apathy consume him as he wallowed in the suffering of his people. Ken was gone, toiling away in the poppy fields of the Alliance. More than half of his neighbors and friends had been slaughtered the night before, and now he was asking them to march deep into the Dry Lands on a hunch of salvation to the East. He closed his eyes, fighting back the helplessness deep inside his heart, hemming it in so it would not destroy any remaining hope that may yet linger there.

A heavy hand fell on his shoulder, and his eyes opened. Tattered, burnt pants led to a shirt that had been torn to shreds as his eyes traveled up the figure in front of him. The man who had been mourning his son only a few feet away a moment before stood over him, dirty face streaked with the wet reminders of his pain. He knelt down in front of Roshi and stared into his eyes, his own bloodshot from the memory of his loss.

“Thank you, Roshi.” The man’s voice quivered as he spoke. He wrapped his arms around Roshi’s shoulders and pulled him close, burying his face into his chest. “Thank you for not letting us die in that hell. Thank you for trying to save my son.” He pulled away and met Roshi’s eyes once more. “I would follow you to the ends of the earth. Never doubt that.”

Tuesday Writeblr Review: Which OC would be the most likely to do something absolutely insane on a triple dog dare?

Thanks so much for the ask! 

And I find it hilarious how easy it is to answer. LOL! I’m currently in rewrites for my Fanon to Canon story and Arlo would, without a doubt, do anything on a triple dog dare. Which is why, I’m sure, Parker goes to great lengths to make sure that doesn’t happen. And, of course, there’s Mason who is probably doing the daring because he’s a dork and we love him for it. 😆

TTWR: Do you listen to music when you write? Or do you prefer silence?

When I was writing Siren Radio it was quiet jazz or lounge music, sometimes jazzhop.

Runners is either a playlist designed specifically for Runners (with anything from Assassin’s Creed II music to this to this on a loop (never just once, not ever), or ambient fantasy music with tavern or village music layered behind it, there is no in between. 

Farm Hands is this with some kind of ambient music layered over it but I haven’t found the right music to layer consistently yet D:

Tuesday writeblr review: Last sentence you wrote in your most active WIP. How do you choose your OC names?

My current WIP is a (not so) short story for @vhum called Fairy Summers. The last sentence I wrote is:

"We're leaving early." Her voice echoed off the rocks, joining the ambiance of leaves rustling and waves lapping.

I choose my OC names completely at random. Sometimes they’re based on people I know (loosely) so their moniker comes from that person, sometimes I search for the definition of a name that suits their ‘destiny’ or personality, and sometimes it’s just really, really random. There’s... not really any rhyme or reason to it. Haha, that was probably really painfully vague and I am so sorry.

It was a workday, which means a breakfast of a Kroger-brand granola bar.

Inspiration? I don’t know her. My inspiration that doesn’t come from procrastinating something else is usually a new song that fits a WIP perfectly.

Summary: The one where the Chosen One is fated to stop a villain’s nefarious plans. The problem? Said Chosen One doesn’t want to be the Chosen One!

Status: Second draft is complete!

Genre: Urban Fantasy

"Winner Takes All." 

Summary: The one where the heroine, after finding out her ex-boyfriend got murdered only one day into her seven-night stay an isolated beach resort, must find out who the killer is before she becomes the next target.

Status: Second draft is complete! Editing/writing the third draft in progress.

Genre: Murder Mystery

"An Engagement To Die For.” 

Summary: Sequel to “Winner Takes All.” The one where an engagement party takes an unfortunate turn, and the heroine (with her friends) must find out who the killer is again before they become the next targets.

Status: As of July 17th, the Camp NaNoWriMo goal has been reached, and the entire first draft is complete as of July 23rd!

“The Next Chapters,” a The Last Story/Rune Factory 4 crossover fanfic.

Please note: This crossover contains major spoilers for the entirety of The Last Story as it takes place post-game for The Last Story, and will eventually contain spoilers for the entirety of Rune Factory 4’s main plot for all three arcs, as this fic takes place during the events of Rune Factory 4.

Tuesday writeblr review: Tell me a little something about your favourite character, but nothing plot-related. Something that will almost definitely never come up in the story it's so unrelated to the plot. Ji-hoon has very specific criteria when it comes to what kind of shoes he wears. Typically it’s some kind of leisure shoe -- designer -- but he’s also got a few options in formal styles.

Magnolia is a southern bell, pure refined lady and assassin. She and her brother, Blane, take freelance jobs trying to prove they’re both worthy to join the Brotherhood, despite knowing women aren’t allowed. She’s still bare bones, but I have plans for her to be awful in a way that’s fun, but makes me wanna pull my hair out 🤣🤣🤣

Wip: Breathing Flowers

Current Word Count: 4110

Warnings: the main character is having a panic attack to be careful ( nothing explicit )

I started to hyperventilate. A panic attack. I hadn’t had one in a long time. I tried to calm down. I already knew what I had to do so it didn’t last long. But then something happened. I started to cough. I felt like I couldn’t breathe any more. I felt something moving in my throat , then in my mouth and I managed to get that thing out of my body. When I looked down on my hand I saw two yellow flower petals. I was confused and scared. Flowers don’t grow inside of people except when..

In my mind appeared the memory of my grandma tell me about people that cough flowers because of love and how they died because of those flowers. It wasn’t possible. It was just a fairy tale grandma used to tell me to scare me , right? I thought I was hallucinations or something like that. It had to be! Maybe because of the shock caused by the panic attack. Maybe because I was tired. I threw the petals in the trash bin and went to sleep. Next day everything would be alright and this would have been just a bad dream.

But how wrong I was..

Notes: Omg! I finally got back to writing!! I had a couple of weeks of break bc I was too busy with school , but now I'm back! Continuing with Hyma's Story with which I have a love-hate relationship. Also this a two weeks worth of writing bc I forgot to post this last week.

“How many now, Aukoo?!”

Aukoo glanced at the scales in her hand, then behind to the cowering townspeople. Those protected by her influence had a golden aura. “Not enough!”

Adnu hissed through her teeth as she ducked the swing from a goblin's poisoned blade and phased through his body. A black mass swirled behind as she exited, which she threw to the ground and stomped on with relish. “Now?!”

Belias yanked his axe from a dzoavits' head and yelled, “That was one more, Adnu! One! How many do you fucking think there are now?!”

Adnu tossed her head. “How am I supposed to know the weight of a mortal's soul?” she grumbled. An ifrit pounced and she couldn't find time to snark at Belias and split the ifrit in half.

“I can't fucking believe you're still fighting against your King?!” Belias yelled at an approaching dzoavits, who paused.

“My King? My King is he who commands our army!” The dzoavits leapt and Belias dodged as another dzoavits stepped into the empty space.

“You fool! Belias is our King! That other one is an imposter! How dare you attack our King!” Blades clashed, fire swirled, and the pair fell back panting. “If he weren't our King do you think so many of us would betray our side?!” He gestured to the line of dzoavits helping to protect Aukoo's shield.

Belias's outrage at his people rushing the defensive line in the and charging over the bridge made him bellow to the heavens, “I am Belias, the Firebrand, King of the dzoavits! Betrayers of the King will die!”
