I love the decision to match Meng Yao's clothing exactly to the colour scheme of the Cloud Recesses buildings in ep4:

Like, look at that! Meng Yao quite literally blending into the background - as if perfectly camouflaged, image perfectly chosen to suit his current setting… or as if he belongs there, as if he fits in perfectly to this specific place.

And then there's Lan Xichen in his customary blue, accented with white, matching the shades of the tassels and hangings. He, too, looks perfectly placed in this setting, as if he is a natural extension or an integral part of it - as of course he is; this is after all his home - but rather than blending seamlessly with the background he is part of the tasteful ornamentation that draws the eye, beautiful and noticeable though without being ostentatious.

And so when you put them together they make for a visually perfect pair in this setting. As if they belong here together, complementing one another as they complete the picture; one aligned with the unobtrusive but crucial structure and one with the restrained but lovely ornamentation, in perfect balance.

To paraphrase the title of one of the songs from the soundtrack... if only life could have been like that first meeting.

So I've been watching The Three Kingdoms, and like many C Dramas it has a lovely soundtrack! But when I got to the start of episode 33, I got sudden whiplash from the music... because I knew I had heard it before somewhere else. That place being from the apparent "OST" of The Untamed.

Now The Three Kingdoms aired in 2010, nine years before CQL crashed into our lives! So what is going on here? It's not like they were even made by the same TV network??

no cause as much as I would love to believe that LWJ grabs WWX's hand in that reunion scene on the mountain after 16y of trying his best not to touch him is because he's finally realized how much he needs WWX with him and will never let him go again, there will always be that lil voice in the back of my head that knows LWJ grabbed him to keep him from butchering his song of love with that god-awful make-shift flute like "no honey, im taking you to gusu so u can actually learn this, not going based off of fever-ridden memory like u didn't even remember me confessing to u with the song's name how u gonna remember intonation?"

i know we talk a lot about tv/films being taken off streaming and disappearing entirely because they only existed digitally but the fact that that happens with music too drives me insane

or like... song versions can be altered and you just lose the original. i have songs on apple music where the title randomly changed months after the fact. songs that were changed to take out unlicensed samples, the superior sample-ful versions lost to anyone who didn't pirate them first.

i have so much non-american music greyed out on streaming because the licensing deals changed and it's no longer available

and, yeah, for a lot of these songs they exist on physical albums and can exist in their original forms out there for whoever bought them, but digital singles? if they're gone... they're fucking gone to anyone who is only willing to listen to them "legitimately"

that's insane to me.

Kinda random, but have you noticed that they swapped JGY’s song in Spotify for a new version? It came up on shuffle today and I thought I was going crazy for a minute.

I do not use Spotify. I find streaming services predatory and awful*, and in fact I loathe the entire tech/gig economy for the most part. Sorry, I can't answer this question. I'm sure they probably have their reasons. I know some songs have shifted every now and then, likely due to licensing issues.

That's one of the reasons streaming isn't for me. I don't like my music library arbitrarily changing without any warning.

*(Bandcamp is a good alternative for those artists who are signed up for it - money goes to the artists!!)
