In my opinion the number one thing AEW can do to improve the Women's division
Tumblr media
Put her on TV every damn week.
Did you know that the AEW Women's Champion wasn't on the latest episode of Dynamite? Did you know that she wasn't on last week's episode? (and that the amount of women's wrestling on that show was a cool 1 minute 6 seconds (according to cagematch)) Did you know that her only role the week before was as Ruby Soho's second? The same is true of the week before that. Because they had the women's Owen on maybe in AEW's eyes there were enough/too many women's matches on. The week before that she seconded Ruby in match that went 2 minutes and 6 seconds (according to cagematch). The week before, the go home show for Forbidden Door she didn't feature at all. The week before that Toni Storm had her most recent televised match on Dynamite (as of Thursday the 27th of July 2023), a seven minute title defence against Skye Blue. She's been on Collision only once.
And hey if that bit was boring then, good. Good because it shows how far I had to go to find the last time that Toni had a televised AEW singles match. Over a f*cking month. I think the topics I choose are making harder to refrain from swearing in these. Yes this is like technically the second one. I said what I said. And hey that might not be true because I believe she's been on Rampage during that time, I didn't bother to check. I didn't check because I have a suspicion that when I did that whole speech no one stood up and said "Actually you missed this specific episode of Rampage" because, and it feels rude to say but I don't think people care about Rampage that much. But you know who has never fought on Rampage, MJF. You wanna check? I did. In the references section should be a link to a cagmatch search showing every MJF AEW match, none of them occur on Rampage I even combed through the matches from before Rampage began for some reason. I don't know why but I had to be 100% sure.
The reason I bring up Max is that he is the AEW World Champion and Toni is the AEW Women's World Champion. And while theoretically those belts should be on an equal standing the women's belt is lesser, for no other reason than that the company presents it as such. I could now use maths to tell you the amount of TV time each has had since Toni become champion. But I don't need to because You and I probably can't remember much that Toni has done on TV since winning the belt because it's not much. Theoretically Toni should be presented as as much of a star as MJF is, and she's not even presented as being on the same level as FTW Champion Jack Jungle Perry Boy.
So the biggest change I would make to AEW's women's division is to prominently feature their f*cking champion. Call me a bloody booking genius. This is an elementary concept of give your champion TV time (especially more than Britt why do I see Britt more than Toni why has Britt been more protected than every champion since she lost the belt?) and make your champion a centre point for the division and make them a star.
Also you know what I saw when wading through AEW shows looking for Toni? Loads of talented women in dark matches. No I don't mean matches on AEW Dark just regular dark matches seen only by the live crowd. Riho and Nyla Rose and Emi Sakura and Abadon and Mei Suruga. They are hiding these women in dark matches. Mei Suruga has only ever had dark matches and matches on YouTube in AEW. That to me, a ChoccoPro fan, is really sad because they have this amazing talent but they won't use her because have they're weekly women's match booked so they don't need anything else. (Also the irony of me complaining that AEW only ever featured Mei on YouTube is not lost on me.)
In conclusion I want AEW to be better but we're still waiting, and we shouldn't be. So give Impact a go. Or become a Joshi fan, you're immediate thought on that will most likely be Stardom and they're great but TJPW (Tokyo Joshi Pro-Wrestling) is also a great shout. They are incredible and they have English commentary if you want it.
This has been Undisputed Queer-a.
Slay The System, Shock The Cis-tem, and see you Monday this was out of schedule but I really wanted to talk about it. Shout out to Toni 'The Bicon' Storm.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
February 20, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
Both global and national affairs appeared to shift over the holiday weekend. Events of the past week or so highlighted the global stakes of not stopping the aggression of Russia’s president Vladimir Putin. In turn, those global stakes highlighted that Trump’s MAGA Republicans are strengthening Putin’s hand.
Since October, MAGA Republicans have managed to delay a national security supplemental bill that would provide additional aid to Ukraine. Although a bipartisan majority of Congress supports the measure, House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) recessed the House on Thursday without taking it up, just days after former president Trump attacked the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and suggested he would urge Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” to U.S. allies if they didn’t meet a guideline of spending 2% of their gross domestic product on their own military forces.
On Friday, February 16, Russian authorities murdered opposition leader Alexei Navalny in prison, where he was being held on trumped-up charges, and on Saturday, Russian forces advanced into the front-line city of Avdiivka.
The Munich Security Conference, the world’s largest gathering on international security policy, met this year in the midst of these events, from Friday, February 16, to Sunday, February 18. At Saturday’s lunch, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark made a surprise announcement. Denmark, she said, will donate all its artillery to Ukraine. She suggested other countries, too, could do more than they already have.
According to Jack Detsch and Robbie Gramer of Foreign Policy, Frederiksen’s announcement “left attendees grappling with some existential questions: Are they prepared not just to help Ukraine but also to defend Europe from a possible Russian attack on a NATO country? Are democracies capable of standing up against the threat of territory-grabbing dictatorships like Russian President Vladimir Putin’s?”
Sweden today announced it will donate about $682 million in equipment and cash to Ukraine, its 15th aid package to Ukraine since the 2022 Russian invasion. The European Union today announced it is committing 83 million euros, or about $89 million, in humanitarian aid for those in Ukraine and Moldova affected by the war. Three weeks ago it approved $54 billion in military aid.
There is increasing pressure, as well, to transfer Russia’s frozen assets to Ukraine. On Saturday, February 17, the U.S. Justice Department, which is in charge of a task force called “KleptoCapture,” transferred $500,000 in forfeited Russian funds to Estonia for fixing Ukraine’s electrical transmission and distribution systems. Biden promised more sanctions against Russia on Friday and has again called for House Republicans to pass the national security supplemental bill.
Indeed, the real elephant in the room is the fact that MAGA Republicans in the House are refusing to commit more U.S. aid. The Institute for the Study of War, a nonprofit research organization, assessed on Sunday that “delays in Western security assistance to Ukraine are likely helping Russia launch…offensive operations along several sectors of the frontline in order to place pressure on Ukrainian forces along multiple axes.”
MAGA Republicans are refusing that aid although it is popular both in Congress and among Americans at large. A Pew study released Friday, before news of Navalny’s murder broke, showed that 74% of Americans believe the war in Ukraine is important to U.S. interests; 59% say it’s important to them personally.
House speaker Johnson condemned Putin as “a vicious dictator” over the weekend and said he was “likely directly responsible” for Navalny’s death. But on Monday he posted to Twitter a photograph of him standing alongside Trump, apparently at Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club, flashing a smile and a thumbs-up sign. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has vowed to try to throw Johnson out of the speaker’s chair if he even brings Ukraine funding to the floor. Trump himself referred to Navalny’s murder on Sunday simply by calling it a “sudden death” before launching into an attack on the United States.
On Sunday, former representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) came out and said it: the Republican Party has a “Putin wing.” She said: “The issue of this election cycle is making sure the Putin wing of the Republican Party does not take over the West Wing of the White House.” Conservative pundit Bill Kristol agreed, in italics: “The likely nominee of one of our two major political parties is pro–Vladimir Putin. This is an astonishing fact. It is an appalling fact. It has to be a central fact of the 2024 campaign.”
Russian authorities have cracked down on those expressing sorrow for the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and are refusing to hand over his body to his mother and lawyer, who flew to the penal colony north of the Arctic Circle to reclaim it, saying they need to keep the body for “chemical analysis.”
Meanwhile, a Russian who defected to Ukraine last year has been killed in Spain, and Russian authorities have arrested for “treason” a dual Russia-U.S. citizen who lives in Los Angeles as she traveled in Russia after having participated in pro-Ukraine rallies.
Putin is facing an election next month, and he may have intended the murder of Navalny to frighten other opponents and intimidate Russian voters. But it is possible it had the opposite effect.
Yesterday, Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, stepped into his place, saying: “Putin didn’t only kill Alexei Navalny as a person. He wanted to kill our hope, our freedom, our future. But the most important thing we can do for Alexei and for ourselves is to go on fighting. I will continue Alexei Navalny’s work. Continue to fight for our country. I call on you to stand alongside me. To share not only the grief and unending pain that has enveloped us and won't let go. I also ask you to share the fury and hate for those who dared to kill our future. I speak to you in the words of Alexei, in which I believe truly: There is no shame in doing little. There is shame in doing nothing. In allowing them to scare you…. By killing Alexei, Putin has killed half of me. Half of my heart and my soul. But I have another half and it tells me that I don’t have the right to give in.”
Today she urged the European Union not to recognize the results of Russia’s March election, saying that “a president who assassinated his main political opponent cannot be legitimate by definition.”
In the U.S., there has not been any apparent move from House Republicans to come back into session to approve the national security package. Indeed, Trump appears to be strengthening his hand over the mechanics of the Republican Party, with the state parties he salted with loyalists lining up behind him, supporters in Congress killing legislation at his demand, and lawmakers who are interested in actually making laws exiting Congress out of fear or frustration.
But the apparent support of MAGA Republicans for Putin is unlikely to play well in the U.S. Today, Republican candidate for president Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina, tricked the Fox News Channel into covering live what she said was a major speech, likely leading producers to think she was withdrawing. Rather than doing so, she came out swinging with an attack on Trump.
Aaron Rupar of Public Notice recorded her comments, spoken with the backdrop of the past week in everyone’s mind. Americans “deserve a real choice,” she said, “not a Soviet-style election where there's only one candidate and he gets 99 percent of the vote.”

Do we know any rituals for when a child is born? Gods to ask for their protection?
Mention is made very frequently in the sagas of a ritual that involves sprinkling a child with water (at ausa vatni) and is usually mentioned in connection with the child being given a name, which implies that these were done together in a single ritual. It's not described in enough detail to determine exactly how this was done or what it was meant to do, but it's generally accepted that it was a sort of initiation into full personhood and the web of human relations, because according to Harðar saga ok Holmverja it was the point after which it was considered murder to expose a child. No mention of the gods is made although it is clear that it was not considered the same as Baptism (skírn) and is not something Christians did. Preben Meulengracht Sørensen (2008, Initiation Between Two Worlds: Structure and Symbolism in Pre-Christian Scandinavian Religion) proposed that the sprinkling and the naming were structural counterparts to each other, that the water symbolically separates the child and is followed by the name-giving which correspondingly aggregates the child into human society (this is using Arnold van Gennep's terminology, which was originally articulated in French).
If you're not able to verify things with primary sources I recommend against Googling this. As one of the few well-attested heathen rituals in the sagas, a lot of modern people have done things based on it, but since there is so little detail, people have had to fill in the gaps with either guesses or things of personal significance to them. That's great and I encourage it, but some of that has now been projected backwards in time so that "The VIKINGS used to do this exactly THIS way (etc)" and it's all a bunch of:
Tumblr media
Sørensen suggests that some kind of divination may have occurred based on Helgakviða Hundingsbana I but simultaneously points out that it's such a special occasion in the poem that we can't generalize from it. He also points out that customs around birth are known from later folklore but that while some of it is probably pre-Christian it's impossible to tell the difference between what is and isn't. He cites the Barsel entry of Kulturhistorisk leksikon for nordisk middelalder fra vikingtid til reformasjonstid by Edvard Gotfredsen and "I livets skeden: Om passageriter i fornskandinavisk religion" by Britt-Mari Näsström, a chapter in Plats och Praxis: Studier av nordisk förkristen ritual. The latter is not accessible to me. Gotfredsen's entry has a lot more about the actual birthing process than about the newborn though it does mention that the pan-Scandinavian practice of the community serving food to the mother and birth-helpers after giving birth was called Nornagreytur ('norns' porridge') in the Faroe Islands, citing Vår gamle trolldomsmedisin by Ingjald Reichborn-Kjennerud. That work is also inaccessible to me, but thankfully it is documented by Karen Bek-Pedersen in Norns in Old Norse Mythology; I'll link to the Google Books preview rather than retype it: https://books.google.com/books?id=m1xwDwAAQBAJ&pg=PT70&lpg=PT70&dq=nornagreytur&source=bl&ots=bsYHs-FY9Z&sig=ACfU3U0-cM9DMcJgxmtY0-ESc-alMckx7Q&hl=is&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiPgdO6rdP4AhWeW_EDHZFqCFEQ6AF6BAgnEAM#v=onepage&q&f=false

Japan buys aircraft carrier landing system used by the U.S. Navy
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 09/02/2023 - 14:00 in Military
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) commissioned the Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS) developed by Raytheon under a foreign military sale contract of $ 8.6 million granted by the U.S. Navy in December 2022.
JPALS, which is a high-integrity differential GPS navigation system based on software and precision landing system, ensures greater safety and greater operational capacity for equipped aircraft.
JPALS allows aircraft to approach and land on ships at sea while operating in all weather conditions and is integrated into the F-35 fighter.
Tumblr media
Japan does not have complete aircraft carriers, but is converting two Izumo-class helicopter destroyers into aircraft carriers capable of operating the fifth-generation F-35B fighters that Japan is buying.
JPALS is scheduled to be deployed in JMSDF's JS Izumo in 2024.
Tumblr media
Japan is preparing Izumo to operate with the F-35B.
“The urgency with which this contract was concluded is proof of our commitment to collaborate closely with our JMSDF partners, which is fundamental to the call for the 2022 National Defense Strategy to reinforce the robust deterrence in INDO-PACOM [Indo-Pacific Command],” the commander said. Charles Steele, deputy manager of the PMA-213 JPALS program.
According to the deputy manager of the PMA-213 International Programs program, Casey Edinger, JPALS is a critical facilitator of the improved landing capabilities of the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter for coalition partners.
JPALS is currently being deployed on all U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships. Japan joins the United Kingdom and Italy to acquire JPALS, which is currently deployed in HMS Queen Elizabeth of the British Royal Navy and ITS Cavour of the Italian Navy.
Tumblr media
JPALS has supported F-35B deployments on U.S. Navy Amphibious LH-class assault ships since 2016 and F-35C deployments on U. Navy aircraft carriers since 2021.
“Taking advantage of existing production resources and historical technical/cost data has optimized the use of declining supply sources, avoided significant price increases and avoided any impact on the deployment schedule,” said John Britt, director of hiring at PMA-213.

Fics Rec (written by me)
You know what? Screw it, I feel like this. Top 5 fics I, AO3 user Szarka, have written, according to myself.
1) Uncle John (The Lone Ranger)
I have put so much work into this one! And then nobody read it, because it’s a dead fandom, but still, maybe this is the fic I’m the most proud of. It deals with the adoption of Dan Reid, and him, John and Tonto kind of adjusting to being a family of three now.
2) Land Without Magic (BBC Merlin)
Magic reveal fic. Idk, I just feel like this is one of my better works. Arthur gets to make a wish, it seriously backfires, and as a consequence, all of the magic gets drained from Camelot. As the show itself keeps insisting, magic is a vital part of the land, so this is... Less than ideal. Arthur finds himself in a race against time to discover what is going on and somehow reverse it, before he ends up causing the death of all magic users in the kingdom.
3) The Holmes Family Secret (Sherlock Holmes, some version of him that lives in my head)
Also known as “the one that got me accepted into film school” (I didn’t think I stood a chance so I just went “whatever” and submitted my latest fanfic). Also one I know did some tangible good in the world, based on comments I received. So we both agree that the “Sherlock has a secret sister who is running a world domination gig out of a high security prison”-plot line in BBC’s Sherlock was stupid, but what if it wasn’t? So, Holmes has a secret sister fic, but instead of being a supervillain, she is severely mentally ill and institutionalized. Also make it Victorian because that is  clearly the superior Holmes version.
4) Jack’s Monster (The Incredible Hulk TV show)
Yes, there is such a thing, from the 70′s. It has a shockingly small fandom, despite being one of the best TV shows ever made. This is the other fic where I received some comments making me feel like I did some good in the world. Within the show, Dr. Banner (called David for some reason) is being chased by a newspaper reporter, Jack McGee. THEY ALMOST NEVER MEET AND IT IS THE CRAZIEST TENSION I’VE EVER SEEN ANYWHERE BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE. By the time I got through the first season, I was sitting on needles enough to write a fic about them actually meeting. Also shippy, because of course.
At this point, it becomes a bit of a tie, as there are multiple fics I like on the same level. Special shout-out to Old Ally (MCU crossover with that one really very bad Russian superhero movie), The Kidnapping Ring (Green Hornet Britt and Kato getting-together fic), Outsiders (Luke Skywalker discovers that he is asexual fic), and Two and Two Together (post-canon fic to the second Superman cliffhanger serial). Anyway, I had to pick something, so I’m just taking the most recent one:
5) Some Kind of Loophole (Arthurian Mythology)
Easily the most relaxed writing experience I had from all of my fics. And I maintain that it’s quite good, despite the plot being, well. Not the deepest. After it is revealed that Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot have that affair, King Arthur discovers some weird legal loophole that would make it acceptable, supposing he too starts sleeping with Lancelot. It takes him a while to figure out that Lancelot would actually be into it.

World Central Kitchen Calls For Independent Investigation into Killing of Aid Workers in Gaza
An independent investigation is the "only way to determine the truth," WCK said.
— By Kevin Shalvey | April 4, 2024
Tumblr media
LONDON -- The foreign-aid organization World Central Kitchen called on Thursday for an independent and international investigation into the killing of seven of its workers in an Israel airstrike in Gaza.
"An independent investigation is the only way to determine the truth of what happened, ensure transparency and accountability for those responsible, and prevent future attacks on humanitarian aid workers," the organization said in a statement.
The seven aid workers were killed Monday night when their three-vehicle convoy, including two armored cars, was struck after leaving the Deir al-Balah warehouse in central Gaza, where the aid workers had helped unload more than 100 tons of humanitarian aid brought to Gaza on the maritime route, according to the statement from WCK, a humanitarian organization dedicated to delivering food aid.

The organization, which was founded by chef Jose Andres, described the airstrike that killed the workers as a "military attack that involved multiple strikes and targeted three WCK vehicles."
"All three vehicles were carrying civilians; they were marked as WCK vehicles; and their movements were in full compliance with Israeli authorities, who were aware of their itinerary, route, and humanitarian mission," the non-governmental organization said Thursday.

WCK said it had asked the U.S., Australian, Canadian and Polish governments to "join us in demanding an independent, third-party investigation into these attacks, including whether they were carried out intentionally or otherwise violated international law."
A senior adviser for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said claims that the Israeli strike was intentional were "absurd."
"The last thing we would want in the world is to endanger civilian lives," Ophir Falk, the adviser, told ABC News on Wednesday.
WCK said Thursday that it had asked Israel to preserve all material -- including documents and communications -- that may be relevant to the strike.

Commercial radio isn't "booming", it's barely paying the minimum wage
The PR-wing of the commercial radio community in Australia is getting everyone excited about a new report - that they commissioned and is weirdly in their favour - about how with commercial radio in Australia turning 100 years old this year on November 23rd.
Tumblr media
A few takeaways from the report include:
About three hours of locally significant content per day in regional communities
74% of Australians surveyed answered “sure, why not” when asked if they think commercial radio and audio build a sense of community.
Over 1/3 of the jobs in commercial radio are in about 1/3 of Australian society (that being regional Australia)
And it was on the jobs issue I wanted to rebut the argument that Australian radio is “booming”.
It might be easy to try and point out that anyone born in the last 40 years doesn’t know what the antenna on their car is for, or how the Australian commercial radio industry has very poorly stepped foot into podcasting and internet distribution, especially in regards to local and regional content, one of the biggest voids in the sphere of content available today.
But instead I’ll share a personal story that might tell you how booming commercial radio is in regional Australia.
Late 2009 I accepted a role that I was so unqualified for that it was a joke. Twenty-seven years old, with only volunteer broadcast radio experience on my resume, having only even stepped foot in Western Australia once before at the other end of the state in Broome, let alone the small town of Esperance found on the far western side of the Great Australian Bight on Australia’s southern coast, 720 kilometres from the most remote city in the world, a forty hour nonstop drive from home.
Tumblr media
The population of over 13,000 people had just shrunk a wee bit after the shock closure of the Ravensthorpe nickel mine in January of that year, but on a freezing cold Saturday morning this young buck who could not name song by The Travelling Wilburys found himself on the corner of Andrew and Demspter Street sitting at an outside broadcast studio in sub-zero temperatures (possibly).
I fell in love with the town of Esperance and its small population. It was a crime that I didn’t know who the Wilburys were considering one of its members had holidayed there, and it was a shame that 14 years on I appreciate the then Radiowest, now Triple M, playlist a lot more than that 27 year old did.
I moved on from that station to Star FM Port Macquarie just over a year later with many great friendships and a much more robust understanding of how to be a leading voice of a local community.
I bring up this anecdote because through COVID things were rough in the wedding industry and Britt and I considered changing many things in our life. One possibility was moving somewhere regional and quiet, somewhere far away, somewhere like Esperance and when the job advert for my old job as breakfast radio host popped up I got in touch. I loved the town and would have cherished the seachange, now with two daughters and now married to the girl I wrote letters to the last time I lived there.
Thirteen years on, with the Esperance population slowly growing, with industry slowly building, and the possibility for remote work in Australia slowly increasing thanks to the NBN and Starlink I thought things might be a little brighter for a modern family moving to the Great Southeast of WA.
The cost of goods has increased 36% since I last worked in Esperance. If you paid $60,000 for something in 2009 you were paying $86,000 for it now.
The average wage locally in Esperance (according to the ABS - 2021 to 2006) has increased 65% over (about) the same time period.
The cost of renting has actually doubled.
Esperance-Goldfields property purchase prices have increased about 13%.
But the wage on offer for the same job had decreased 7% and was most likely in a smaller team even though it was only a local staff of seven for two radio stations (I was the sole local programming hire) when I was there in 2009. There was the possibility of increasing the wage by also doing radio advertising sales but I’ve proven in the past that an advertising salesperson I am not.
The same role, for a slightly larger audience which would be begging for local stories and content in an ever-globalised content world, was paying $938 a week after tax - $177 more than the minimum wage.
If commercial radio can’t afford to pay local content creators more than $177 a week over the minimum Australian wage I cannot believe that commercial radio is soaring in popularity. Instead, commercial radio in Australia sounds like an industry that has ignored advances in civilisation, in communication, in broadcasting, and how societies work in 2023 and is just hanging on by the threads of people who haven’t got CarPlay yet.
Rest in peace, commercial radio. You were my first love, but at one hundred years old maybe it’s time to pass the batten to someone who understands how to be an integral part of a community.

Lit Review/Discussion Prep #7
In this week's readings on Public History, we learn how Public Historians try to balance providing a historical site for the community while focusing on Heritage Tourism and the Commodification of the Past. Historical sites need financial aid to maintain the site in a usable condition so that the community can see their history being preserved correctly so that generations can see their history. However, profiting from the historic site can be controversial because the site's primary goal is to inform and present the history of the community to the public and not to be doing this public work to profit from the community.
In chapter 4, Heritage Tourism and the Commodification of Contested Spaces: Ireland and the Battle of the Boyne Site, Ruth McManus and Gerry O'Reilly writes about how Public Historians has used Irish history more as a product than an information site for tourist and the community in this area.1 They write that Public Historians in Ireland must show how Ireland was transformed into the culture we understand and see today.2 While continuing to read this chapter, Ireland has a significant GDP percentage in tourism that supports over 200,000 jobs in the country; this section of the economy helps support Ireland as a whole and the local businesses that profit from the tourist coming into the local towns.3 Without this section in Ireland's economy, they would take a hit that would affect all aspects of the economy locally and nationwide.4 They write about contested land that was fought over and how historians should not be profiting over this event because while they are profiting, hundreds of people died for their right to that land.5 Public Historians need to show the people's sacrifice over fighting for that land and the freedoms they believed in during the time.6 This reading helps us understand the real-world problems that circle historical sites and the profit that can benefit the whole country while respecting the historical events in that area.7 The locals, national government, and historical institutions work together to benefit the most in economic and historical understanding while showing the sites to the tourists traveling to Ireland.
In the second reading, Packaging the Past, Britt Baillie, Afroditi Chatzoglou, and Shadia Taha write about how the community heritage is called into question in how they are presented to the world and also questioning the goals of "information" verse profit when marketing these historical sites all over the world.8 For historians to understand the problems they see in these communities, we need to take it back to theory and how theory in the history field can help future communities and Public historians to create heritage sites that benefit the course of information of the community rather than profit.9 They get into how historians used Marx's definitions of product and the exchange of commerce between people of a community.10 They write that we as public and traditional historians need to think about the product in commerce as a service rather than a money transfer in these heritage sites worldwide.11 That was the standard for how these heritage sites operated, and the rise of problems that accord from this way of thinking.12
In the article, Between War and Tropics: Heritage Tourism in Postwar Okinawa, Gerald Figal writes about how the Battle of Okinawa has weaved into the site's modern-day uses and how historians need to balance the new with the old.13 While the United States Government wants the site to be respected to honor the men who died in the Battle of Okinawa, the Japanese Government wants to use the land to promote tourism and produce profits that the Japanese government can use in other projects.14 This struggle between two governments on the use of the land and how these conflicts between the governments cause confusion on the historical site and the problems of profiting over respecting the historical events on the land.15
In the last reading, Cities for Sale: Merchandising History at South Street Seaport, Christine Boyer writes about how a historical seaport has been replaced by financial institutions that developed the land and the port that used to be there.16 The author explains how New York has held profits over historic preservation in creating these districts that destroy the area's history.17 While writing about the history of New York City, with Main Street and Wall Street being the city's business centers, the creation of financial institutions all over the city hinders the story and the picture of New York City's history.18 This piece shows how public historians save the history of a city that promotes profits over historical sites all over the city limits.19
Overall, these pieces help show the problems with historical sites and the economic aspect of the community. Protecting the history of a community is essential, and providing the community a place where they can benefit from as well betters everyone. Public Historians need to find a balance in this endeavor and give the people a place where their history is protected and help the locals in return.

Thomas & friends season 8
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thomas's on-screen appearances in the TV series were developed by Britt Allcroft. Main articles: Thomas & Friends and Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go He was a fussy little engine, always pulling coaches about. He had six small wheels, a short stumpy funnel, a short stumpy boiler and a short stumpy dome. ".a tank engine who lived at a Big Station. Thomas was described in the opening to "Thomas and Gordon", the first story in book number two, Thomas the Tank Engine, as: Thomas in The Railway Seriesĭespite becoming the most popular character in The Railway Series, Thomas did not feature in the first book, The Three Railway Engines. Reginald Dalby created the character, as he was responsible for illustrating books 3–11 and repainting the illustrations of books 1 and 2.Īlthough Thomas locomotives are seen today on various heritage railways, the locomotives are either unpowered decoys or converted from other locomotives, as all of the prototype LB&SCR E2 class locomotives were scrapped between 19. It had often been erroneously assumed that C. Payne was not credited for his illustrations at the time, and it is only since the publication of Brian Sibley's The Thomas the Tank Engine Man that he has started to receive major recognition. Thomas has always been shown with a curved front buffer beam in the television series. The accident, in Thomas Comes to Breakfast was partly devised as a means of correcting this. This was an illustrator's mistake that was perpetuated in subsequent books. Awdry was unsatisfied with one detail of the illustration - the fact that the front end of his footplate featured a downward slope, which meant that his front and back buffers were at different levels. Thomas as portrayed by Hornby and the TV series is based on one of six E2 class locomotives fitted with an extension to the front of the water tanks. This may have been chosen simply because Awdry had a photograph to hand. Awdry selected a real locomotive for Payne to work from to create authenticity: a Billinton designed 0-6-0 E2 Class of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. After Awdry's wife encouraged him to publish the stories, the publisher of the second book in The Railway Series, Thomas the Tank Engine, hired an illustrator named Reginald Payne.

Thomas wasn't originally based on a prototype rather, the initial stories were an accompaniment to the toy made for Christopher.

This engine looked rather different from the character in the books and television series, and carried the letters NW on its side tanks, which stood for "No Where" according to Awdry. When Awdry created Thomas, the engine existed only as a wooden toy made for his son Christopher. TV series and Hornby based Thomas on this prototype belonging to the LB&SCR E2 class The programme became an award-winning hit around the world, with a vast range of spinoff commercial products. In 1979, British writer/producer Britt Allcroft came across the books, and arranged a deal to bring the stories to life as the TV series Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends (later simplified to Thomas & Friends). Thomas's best friends are Percy and Toby, though he is also close friends with Edward. Thomas first appeared in 1946 in the second book in the series, Thomas the Tank Engine, and was the focus of the four short stories contained within. All of the vehicles in The Railway Series were based on prototypical engines Thomas's basis is the LB&SCR E2 class. Thomas is a blue steam engine and has a number 1 painted on his side. He became the most popular and famous character in the series, and is the titular protagonist in the accompanying television spin-off series Thomas & Friends. Thomas the Tank Engine is a British anthropomorphised fictional steam locomotive in The Railway Series books by Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopher, published from 1945.
