Aaa thank you! Totally cool to do that, I’m so glad you like it, writing that fic got me into Arthuriana in the first place!

…also it was some of the first writing I did after a long time of… not writing any fiction at all, and then there was a 10 year break where it sat in a folder in my closet and didn’t write hardly at all some more… and then I finally pulled it out again and finally finally finished it.

So I have a lot of mixed feelings about it, especially now that I’ve learned so much more about Arthurian literature and gotten so much deeper into it. La Morte d’Amour is best classed as a fanfic of Heather Dale’s song Trial of Lancelot, because I knew very little of Arthuriana at the time and was writing it as a fix-it fic in response to that song.

After reading a bunch of classic literature (and falling in love with the Vulgate Cycle), I feel almost a little embarrassed… even though I was very proud of it when I first wrote it! So it’s gratifying to hear you like it so much, helps me feel better about it as a story. ;)

(I had originally planned to write more and expand on it, but at this point I’m probably going to write Vulgate fanfic instead, heh.)

It took Guinevere roughly five minutes, even in her weakened, semi-delirious state, to realise that she was being handed an opportunity unlike any other that would ever come her way again, and after that it was simply a matter of working out how to make the very most of it.

Some considerable time ago I was chatting with the lovely @mihrsuri  about our enormous love for this movie, and that I'd never quite managed to write very much about these three (I tend to focus on Gawain and Galahad with an occasional side order of Tristan or Dagonet). Guinevere is a fascinating character in this version of the story, although underwritten, and I like to amuse myself by wondering how it might have turned out if they'd given Keira Knightley more to do, and/or a little more space to make the character work. She's very clever and clearly a political mastermind, and surely she would have figured Arthur and Lancelot out and found a way to turn it to her (their mutual) advantage, rather than striding right on in there and blowing the whole thing apart. And if she had...maybe Lance wouldn't have gone on that ridiculously suicidal charge against Cerdic at the end there...who knows? :D

arthur, crushing his goblet in his hand:

merlin: arthur’s been in a bad mood recently :( i should cheer him up

merlin, remembering when arthur was put out when merlin brought morgana flowers and not him: i know just the thing

merlin, bringing a bouquet of carnations, roses, and tulips and setting them on arthur’s table while he’s eating breakfast: good morning, sire

arthur, trained on flower language in hopes that one day when he was to take a queen he could woo her easily, trying not to audibly choke on his sausage as he reads merlin’s declaration of love sitting in front of him:

arthur, who recently found out about merlin’s magic and was trying to find a way to bring it up, catching him in the act and watching merlin panic to explain himself:

merlin, Freaking: and i swear to you arthur, i have only ever used it for you. my magic is yours. my life is yours. i am yours. i would never do anything to harm you. i have protected you for years and will continue to do so at your side if you’ll have me

arthur, already believing them to be courting, desperately trying to figure out if that was a proposal for marriage or not but tired of being confused and deciding fuck it: here.

merlin, taking it: i…uh…huh?

arthur, watching merlin with hawk eyes and trying to figure out what he’s thinking and feeling: it’s my mothers sigil

merlin, confused as FUCK but is focusing on the fact that arthur is handing him something of his mother rather than a death sentence: my…my lord?

arthur, realizing how scared merlin’s must be about him finding out about his magic and trying to comfort him while also proposing, killing two birds with one stone: i will always keep you at my side, merlin, so long as we both shall live. if you’ll allow me.

merlin, almost collapsing with relief and tearing up, smiling at arthur as if he had parted the storm clouds to allow sun to shine down on them in that moment: of course…of course, arthur. always and forever.

merlin, watching the castle staff rush this way and that: wow. this banquet must be incredibly important

sir leon the long suffering, day one ride or die, one of the original merthur shippers: banquet? merlin, this is for your wedding

merlin, overworked and exhausted: my WHAT? to WHO??

leon, regretting everything he’s ever done in his life that led him to this moment: to…arthur?

Arthur having to explain his love life to the council: I'm married to Gwen, who is in love with Morgana, I'm also in love with Merlin, and everyone but Morgana is in love with Lancelot. It's really not that complicated.

Currently imagining Arthur + Gwen + the knights asking someone (maybe druids?) who this famous "Emrys" is and they proceed to do a version of "We Don't Talk About Bruno" while Arthur, Gwen and the knights grow increasingly more distressed with each line and Merlin hyperventilates in the background

The envy Arthur and Lancelot would have had for each other must have been insane.

Because Merlin is secretive with Lancelot. He tells him things he would never tell Arthur, he opens up to him and Arthur knows he can never have that trust. Never have that closeness not while he’s king and Merlin a servant.

But to Lancelot he’s been secretive about protecting Arthur. It all resolves around Arthur, opening up about protecting Arthur, giggling over using magic to please Arthur. Lancelot knows it will never be him on the other side of the devotion not like this.

just like he will never be Gwen’s because she loved him once yes but at the end of the day it’s Arthur she chooses.

and in Arthur’s eyes Lancelot is Gwen’s first love will always be known as such and will always be looked at as such even if she loves him she loved Lancelot first and Arthur can’t help but think if she could have him she would.

Anyway I’m so sane about them and at the end of the day how they still understand why it’s like this because they would choose the other as well.
