#the worst part about being so picky about characters and how they’re written

So there’s this fic called Crimson River (idk if you’ve heard of it read it) it’s technically a wolfstar & jegulus, but that aside it’s quite a fantastic bit of internal monologue from Aberforth regarding James and Sirius.
“ The bond between James and Sirius is something entirely other. He has never before seen anything that could compare to it. What James and Sirius have doesn’t exist in history, and may never exist again - not just once in a lifetime, but once in any lifetime. This is not history repeating itself, therefore it is unprecedented. Aberforth had no doubt in his mind that James and Sirius could undergo any form of torture and come out the other side entirely themselves, but he does doubt that they wouldn’t toss everything that they are, and all that they stand for, if it could mean sparing one another any bit of pain.”
i do know the fic!! i think it’s impossible to be in certain fandoms w/o hearing about some fics and this is one of those. the whole thing sounds amazing but it’s just,,,the ships lol (although,,,if i’m hearing it right,,,zar might be…dipping a toe into j/s soon so i need someone to ping me if that happens bc i’d run so fast—i love their entire energy so much my god)
and this really sums it up why bc it’s so, SO accurate for j & s. they have a bond that’s so unique and so codependent, it’s hard to separate where one begins and the other ends. and zar gets it ykno? no matter what romantic ship they might be a part of, the other is an integral part to them and this passage captures it so brilliantly. esp that last bit about enduring anything for their own self but if anything happen to the other, they’d go feral. like, i firmly believe that sirius is a bit broken not because of azkaban but bc he lost james. if for whatever reason (not that it’s possible lol) james was alive & he still ended up going thru 12 years in azkaban, i don’t think he’d be as he was. james’ death is so fundamental to who he is post halloween, it’s just !!!!!! i don’t even have words lol
thank u so much for sending this to me <33

Being in fandoms for so long yourself, do you have any tips on how to approach fandom in general? It can be so overwhelming sometimes!
Honestly avoid fandom as much as possible. 'Tis a silly place.
Tumblr media
On a more serious note, I DO have a draft on staying sane on social media I’ve been slowly making. The main points are about knowing how your social media sites work in regards to tags, searches, cuts, filters, blocks, and mutes, and being liberal with using them for whatever reason you need. In general for this post: limit following counts and be picky about who you follow and why--don't just “follow back” because. Don’t sit in Discords that make you uncomfortable and keep utility servers to those channels needed and mute/hide the rest. I should get around to the rest eventually.
I maintain that sticking to what you love and with friends is better than trying to interact with “the fandom” at large. Especially as a property gets well known and a larger following, the vocal negative 1% seems to get louder and tiresome quickly. Protect yourself and your pals and enjoy what you wish, minimizing stress and drama and hurting real people over what’s supposed to be a shared interest of pretend characters and stories. More specifics of that below.
Limiting myself to some friends and branching off their recommendations, getting to know folks before hopping into servers or groups, helps a lot. I don’t have to engage with the entire fandom. I tend to hear about random dramas in passing, like a shadow underwater, because I interact with chill folks more interested in simply enjoying an interest, not in making it their entire life and identity and so having to be right or chase clout or whatever over a pretend world and make-believe characters, even if resonates with us.
Don't give too much of yourself away. Don't tell people all the ways to trigger you, or your vulnerabilities. Don't give away locations. Use basic internet safety and anonymity to keep folks at arms’ length as much as needed. You're not obligated to answer every DM, right away or ever. You can make some dear friends through fandom, but a single shared interest is not a guaranteed safe and healthy basis of relationships.
Focus on what you love, ignore what you don't. Yes, you want a healthy level of objectivity and criticism and sometimes you need to vent but overall, fandom experience is much better if you're actually enjoying the things you engage with. Don't force yourself to put up with things you don’t have fun with, but also let others have their fun (even if you don’t think that it is fun, if it isn’t harming other real people and dragging them down it’s fine even if you don’t get it). This can include leaving that fandom when the base material is no longer fun for you, leading to...
Remember that you don't own the characters and story; it's someone else's world, we just play in it. The creators are going to make choices and changes, some good and some bad; learn to accept that and keep fanon separate from canon. Interactions with creators via social media are also usually very surface level and parasocial; just because they make part of themselves visible and accessible, doesn't mean you know them, are friends, or are owed anything by their social presence.
Other fans have other takes; you may not like them, but they're valid. Sometimes those other ideas too can make you rethink or add to your own, make you realize some things you hadn’t considered due to a blindspot in your own experiences, and add to your understanding of characters and story arcs. So be open to others’ ideas. Find those of a like mind more or less and stick with ‘em.
Don’t let fandom ruin a thing for you. If you find yourself surrounded by a lot of negative opinions, especially about something you enjoy, you can speak up if comfortable, but if not, simply stop following/interacting. I cull my following lists regularly, and a lot of times remove people who tend to be negative about things too often for my taste. Their blog/timeline/whatever but I don’t have to interact with it. If I find my enjoyment of a thing souring, I ask myself if it’s due to the actual story/characters/how the creators act, or if it’s due to the corner of fandom I’m in and if I have to clean up and then see how I feel about the thing.
Don't assume the worst of people. I often make myself stop and reread what someone said, slowly and even out loud if I must, to make sure I understood. Go back some posts/threads/pages for context if needed. Some people are just bad at communicating. They may be ignorant of even the most basic of modern social manners, internet etiquette, and so on. English may not be their first language. I tend to assume unintentional oopses until someone makes it crystal clear they mean harm--it's generally easy to tell. Let things roll off your back; they don't know you, really, just the persona you present online. You don't know them and their issues, either, just what little you see. It's usually not worth the hassle and heartache to do more than eye-roll and move on with life.
Others won’t censor/remove everything you personally find a squick or trigger, but do advocate for proper tags, warnings, and hiding the content. Learn to skip past the crap you dislike to find the things you do; you do not have to read or view or comment or like everything. There's only so many hours in a day, and not everything is your taste.
My personal annoyance usually come from how people who engage with questionable content react to other fans being upset, especially when they didn’t take the proper precautions to warn/hide their content based on the site. Anyone who then revels in their “problematic” status and starts making their dark content “to spite antis” has lost sight of why they wanted to make that content to begin with and are acting like brats, IMO. Especially a waste when it can be well written/drawn, even if out of my own comfort area. Don’t do things for spite if you can help it; sometimes it leads to interesting things, but a lot of times, it ends up hollow and a regret down the road.
There’s likely more to this, but these are some general rules I’ve been trying to follow as I get older and realize a lot of time and emotional labor over fiction isn’t worth stress and negativity, but should be relaxing and fun, as the real world is difficult enough. Have fun and make things fun and positive for others when possible, don’t tear others down for the sake of it. Fandom is meant to be a shared interest and love of a thing, after all.

How I’d fix the SPN finale (from a fan with 0 writing knowledge):
Cut out the 20th episode and make 15.19 longer
Before Jack leaves have Dean ask for Cas back. They reuinite
Sam runs back to Eileen and they have a sweet reunion.
Montage of Sam & Eileen quitting the life, getting married, having a family, etc. Basically what the finale did but make it ACTUALLY happy. (I mean, what’s this about Sam not being able to so much as touch the Impala’s wheel without having a breakdown years after Dean’s death??) He has the domestic dream he always wanted.
Meanwhile we get shots of Cas and Dean continuing to hunt and drive around in the Impala. No more ‘world ending’ enemies looming over their head. Just the two of them out on the road, werewolf here, ghost there. Just some good old fashion hunting, the kind of stuff Dean loves.
Ideally Dean and Cas are explicitly shown to be together but even under the assumption that the can’t have an overtly Bi Dean (which I mean... wtf it’s 2020 why not?) This could still work? And would be ambiguous enough to get past network restrictions? I’m just saying if the writers really wanted a queer couple in the show they would’ve found a way of doing it
Maybe add a few scenes of them visiting some side characters (ie Wayward Sisters) to tie in the whole ‘found family’ theme the show’s been so heavy handed with over the last 15 years instead of it just boiling down to ‘found family’s great but like, they’re not ACTUALLY family like Sam and Dean are so they’re not as important’
I get the writers didn’t want to have ‘any loose threads’ and wanted to keep as much ambiguity out of it as possible but that doesn’t make for a satisfying ending! Give us SOME ambiguity, let us imagine that these characters live out happy lives for years after the show’s end. Them being happy in Heaven is not the same thing
The dog can stay, he’s great.
My issues with the ACTUAL spn finale:
Couldn’t they just have invited people to Dean’s funeral? Like.... Did it really have to look SO lonely? Again for a show so bent on hammering home the theme of found family shouldn’t Dean’s funeral have had a bunch of people? Wayward sisters, alt. bobby, alt. charlie, garth, Jack....... Anyone? Nah it’s just Sam and the dog, glad to see that after years of 'finding family’ no one cares about Dean’s death except Sam and a dog he’s known for like a week and a half
Also you know what’s fucked up? Dean was by far the most affected out of all the characters upon finding out how much control Chuck had over everything he did. Like... It really fucked him up. So ok, God’s defeated and Dean finally has some autonomy. He can breathe easy, he’s won, he’s his own man and this time he’s sure of it. Wait, what’s that? He dies literally a WEEK LATER? Excuse me? You’re telling me all that trauma and existential crisis and he got a single week as a reward for coming out on top?
Also that whole Cas induced ‘i’m not a killer’ revelation kinda feels less impactful knowing it only lasts a few days and then he dies (admittedly this one’s just a bit nit-picky but I mean...)
Also idk but it just feels kinda wrong for Dean- a character who’s been repeatedly shown to have 0 regard for his own life and seems hell bent on sacrificing himself especially the last few seasons- to just die like that? I mean, if anything It seemed like he’d have to learn to value his own life as part of his greater story arc (you can kinda see echoes of it all the way back from S1). I guess this kinda ties in to the last point with the added weight that he only gets killed off once he accepts that he’s good, full of love and deserves to live. Idk especially with how many times Sam’s had to talk him off of ledges these past seasons it just feels kinda ghoulish to me.
To show us the Harvelle Roadhouse  in heaven but make 0 reference to my girls Ellen and Jo is an actual crime and I will sue
Also why the hell was the vamp chick from S1 here? Like... what? I mean of all side characters to include (especially the one-off s1 background characters) why her? Honestly if you’d told me someone from S1 was getting brought back I’d’ve guessed Cassie but even then I don’t think the series finale is the right place to be like ‘hey remember THIS character?’ especially not when major characters like Cas get ZERO screen time
You know the worst part? It would’ve been so easy to make the ending good? Or at the very least ok? Like, with just 3 changes: [1] It’s made clear that Sam ends up with Eileen (I’m still not clear if that was her or some rando in the montage) [2] If they’d directed Jared in a way that presented Sam as happy or at the very least nostalgic instead of just horrible scarred for the rest of his life (I’m still so angry at that last Impala scene wtf) [3] If they’d just snuck Cas in to a single scene with Dean in heaven, even if it was hug I don’t think I’m asking for that much
Also I find it funny that the entirety of Sam’s life occurs over the span of a single drive. So what, a 20 minute walk and then Dean II shows up in heaven? They sit down for a burger and guess what? It’s Dean II’s kids! I just find it funny that lifetimes pass so quickly in heaven time, meaning that they’re just gonna be constantly flooded with new people all the time and never get anything done cause ‘Dad, I’d like you to meet your great great great great great-’
Maybe spend more than $0.03 on the aging prosthetics
Also didn’t Sam’s death feel kinda... off? I mean I’m gonna have to reiterate the whole lonely ending thing is weird in a show all about found family. Anyways the entire interaction between Sam and Dean II felt odd. Sam’s there, dying, by himself until Dean II walks in and, completely unprompted and without a trace of emotion, tells his dad that he can go ahead and die now. Couldn’t they have edited that scene so that it starts with Dean II already at his bedside? And I mean 0 disrespect to actor for Dean II (for all we know it could’ve been directed/written this way) but couldn’t he have been a bit more choked up about his dad dying? Like... Even a little?

So Klaus is referred to as “Nik” by mainly two people—Kol and Rebekah. This makes sense because they are his younger sibilings and they have known him their entire lives. Now, full disclaimer: I am very picky about the fanfiction I read. I absolutely love fanfiction, and I appreciate every person who takes the time to write the stories they come up and is gracious enough to share them with the world; however, it is really easy for me to be taken out of a story (one that is supposed to be canon or canon divergent) when characters are really OOC. Examples of this are: Elena being treated like a whiny homewrecker, the Originals being uncharacteristicly friendly or caring, Tyler being portrayed as being annoying because he has a vendetta against the man who murdered his mother and made him a slave, etc. It’s just not my cup of tea. One thing that has always frustrated me in the occasional fic I’ll try to read revolves around people calling Klaus “Nik.” I encountered this a lot in my younger days (I first watched The Vampire Diaries when I was a tween) and I was a Klaroline shipper. Now, I understand that the ship is narrative trash, and I no longer ship it. I’m getting really off point, but some of these fics had Klaus allow Caroline or whoever else call him “Nik” and it always bugged me. There is only one fic (I believe) that you have written where Elena calls Klaus this nickname and it is chapter 5 of bite-sized. I’m not exactly sure if that was a choice on your part or if it was the prompt (cuz the opening sentence is where it’s used), but I really like your character analysis and wanted to know what your thoughts on this topic are. Would Klaus ever let Elena call him “Nik” ? How does that come up? Whose idea is it and why? Also, I note that only in FE is “Nik” spelled like “Nick”. Is there a particular reason for this? Thank you!
Well, first off, I do agree, what characters call each other is important. I click off of fics for the same reason.
To answer your question, the “Nik” in chapter 5 of Bite-Sized is from the prompt I was given-- almost all of Bite-Sized is based on the fic prompt game “give me the first line and I’ll write a ficlet for it” so the prompter was the origin for that. Otherwise, you’re right, I never have had Elena use that name, and it’s on purpose.
So, to me, it’s not really so much about Klaus “letting” Elena call him Nick as it is about the fact that I don’t think she would ever think to.
Elena has a really different relationship with Klaus than either Rebekah or Kol-- obviously. For Bex and Kol, there’s that “younger sibling intimacy” that gets established through the nickname, and also that thing where they’re going to completely ignore the nickname their brother chooses for himself and use the familiar nickname-- maybe even the one their mother used for him when they were small?
For Elena, the name Klaus isn’t just Klaus as in the individual-- I think that name holds so much weight and terror and dread in it, because it’s the name of that formless nightmare that was her inevitable fate hanging over her head for months and months and months before she ever knew him. In my fics, when she names him, especially when they’re having an intimate moment and she uses his name, it’s almost like it’s an acknowledgment that the person she has become to close to is also the same person who is all of her worst fears embodied. It’s a nod to the fact that she’s allowed herself to become sucked in, and a reckoning with who she’s given her heart to. I very much like that idea that by calling him “Klaus” she has to confront her actions and who she is really doing this with again and again.
I’m also really particular about Elena calling him Klaus because that’s the name Klaus chooses for himself (”Niklaus is the name my father gave me. Please, call me Klaus”). There’s a lot in his character about forging his own identity and I like to reenforce it in text.
(Elijah therefore choosing to refer to his brother as Niklaus packs a punch-- he’s constantly denying Klaus’s attempts to forge his new identity by going back to the other name-- I’m sure there must be times in the show where Elijah does call him ‘Klaus,’ but all the Niklauses ring much more loudly in my ears, so.)
As for why I chose “Nick” instead of “Nik” for FE-- well, originally, I didn’t. I realized that I had gone back and forth in different chapters, and that I had to make a writing choice. I decided on the English “Nick” spelling for the simple reason that the first time we hear that nickname, it’s in Chicago in the 1920s. Bex and Klaus are having an American phase, and that name in that setting immediately put me in mind of The Great Gatsby (even though the flashbacks are set a few years prior to the book’s publication). It made me think about how the Originals are constantly changing and adapting the details of their identities to suit time and place-- how they’re cultural chameleons. I’m very fond of the idea that they’ve changed their names over time-- that maybe Elijah used to be Ilya and he’s anglicized it, or in this case that Klaus used to be “Nik” and it’s changed over time to “Nick.” This was my little nod to how slippery those details are with them. It’s significant too that Rebekah in particular is the one calling him that, because at least when the fic started, she was coming directly from that 1920s mindset (whenever I have Rebekah use an idiom, I try to find phrases that were popular from about the late Victorian era-the early 20s for this very reason-- although, obviously she’s adapted in the four years since her awakening). I’m pretty back and forth in my fic in general whether I think it should be Nik or Nick-- either works in my opinion, but I do like the Nick spelling quite a lot as a reference to that time and place where we were introduced to it.
A note on a couple of other things that drive me crazy in terms of who calls whom what:
There’s a very short list of people who might call Rebekah ‘Bex’ (Elena certainly never does!) (in fact, I would limit that list to Klaus, Stefan, and Kol)
It’s not canon but I do think Elena might get called Lena by some of her oldest friends-- really, Tyler, Matt, Caroline, Bonnie, maybe Jeremy (depends on his annoyance level with her)
And finally, the big big big thing that makes me stop reading fanfiction with Klaus in it faster than any other: what he calls people. I notice the big trend is to have him call people “love.” I’m definitely guilty of that in my earliest wranglings with the character. But y’all. He doesn’t use “love” all that much, or every time he’s referring to someone. It! Drives! Me! Crazy! OTHER characters do that, but not Klaus! What he says more often are “sweetheart” and “my dear.” (And I like to have him also use “dearheart” because it’s along the same lines, and I love it, so there.) He also does use people’s names. One of the things I most insistently edit myself on is making sure I’m not overusing any of Klaus’s various “endearments,” and that I keep those separate from, say, something Rebekah might say, like “darling.” Also, the thing about those endearments: they’re usually really off-putting and a sign that he’s not taking whoever it is seriously. It’s his weird intimacy thing he does when he’s in actuality being dismissive of the person (always a woman in the show? I can’t think of any instances where he calls a man any of these endearments, but please correct me if I’m wrong!)-- “Are you ready, my dear?” being the one that always pops up in my mind with huge fog horns.
A little FE detail which I thought was so sneaky (and was maybe too sneaky because no one has commented on it yet) is that Klaus never refers to Elena as anything other than her name from the moment he awakens from the daggering in chapter 41 onward. To me, that’s the most telling thing of all-- the constant, constant reassertion of her name-- her individuality-- her her her-- over and over and over again.
(ps “Now, I understand that the ship is narrative trash, and I no longer ship it” I choked)
Thanks for asking!

Reasons Why Ani’s Character Failed
Season 3 of «13 reasons why» has been out for a long while, but with the 4th and final season approaching my thoughts circle back to one drawback that last season had. Now, this show is badmouthed enough as it is, and it’s not my intention here. I love «13 reasons why», that’s why I care so much about the subject. I’d also like to point out that there’s no hate towards the actress who portrayed Ani. If anything, this is directed at the writers as feedback from a fan of the show.
Tumblr media
The reasons why Ani’s character was brought into the story are understandable. Yes, she’s a plot device for Bryce’s storyline, and she’s the new narrator. On top of that, she’s supposed to be the audience surrogate. She’s the new girl coming into this group of kids, and just like us she tries to figure out Bryce’s murder and all the personal drama that comes along. However, this concept obviously fails (seriously, after season 3 all people could talk about was how much they hated Ani). So where did it all go wrong, exactly?
The biggest problem with Ani’s character is by far her annoying personality. She’s nosy, spying on everyone and interfering with their lives. Surprisingly this reserved group of teenagers actually opens up to her. After everything that went on you would expect them to be more picky with who they trust. Characters don’t just confide in her, they feel obligated to justify themselves in her eyes. Like she’s some sort of angel.
Ani’s the one demanding the truth from everyone, yet she’s the one who keeps secrets. Her relationship with Bryce was meant to paint Bryce as a human being. In no way did Bryce deserve any redemption for his crimes, but it was essential to recognize him as a human, not a monster. Because once we see somebody as a monster, it becomes impossible to destroy them, they start to seem stronger than we are.
No matter how important it was to send this message, it didn’t do any favors to Ani’s character. She sleeps with Bryce knowing that he’s a rapist. She defends him in front of Clay, like a true rapist apologist. Ani with her hero complex wants to fix everyone, that’s why she’s all up in their business, that’s why she gets involved with Bryce. Unfortunately, she refuses to admit her own imperfection. She is a hypocrite. Even though at the end she acknowledges that sleeping with Bryce was the worst thing she’d ever done, it doesn’t excuse her actions.
Introducing a new character into an existing dynamic is quite tricky. Over the seasons the audience grew to love the established characters. So when you let someone new share screen time with the beloved cast, the newbie should be captivating enough. Moreover, it is unfair for a new character to take away too much screen time from the numerous preexisting cast. It is especially irritating when this character is condescending towards the ones who’ve been there since day one and comes with no character development. That again raises the question: why would you make such a dislikable character (not presented as an antagonist) a main one?
Tumblr media
The significant part of Ani’s character is the narration of the season. It’s one of the reasons for introducing her character at all… But was narration even necessary in season 3?
Season 1 had Hannah’s voiceover via tapes because the plot revolved around her, we were seeing life through her eyes. She was the one telling the story. The plot couldn’t go on without it. Narration in season 2 could’ve been avoided, however that season already had a different feel to it, so the writers didn’t want to shock the audience completely by the absence of a voiceover. The narration helped to concentrate on particular parts of the story, and ramifications that the tapes left on each character. We got to see events from different perspectives, not just Clay and Hannah’s.
Nevertheless, narration in season 3 was unnecessary and poorly done. It is annoying as it is, when somebody tells the audience everything that’s going on when we can clearly see that for ourselves, but when it comes from a dislikable character it is twice as bad. Narration brings something to the story when it makes the story more interesting, when it’s revealing something new. (That’s why inner monologues actually work, when written well). On the contrary, Ani’s never-ending story, full of lies and vague pretentious phrases, is boring and distracting from the plot.
Finally, let’s touch upon the whole – Ani being Clay’s love interest – thing. Since Hannah’s gone (and her ghost manifested by Clay as well) the main character needs another sidekick who’ll follow him around, because the audience needs Clay to communicate his feelings and theories at all times (which could be avoided, were Clay the narrator), and apparently Justin and Tony weren’t worthy enough to fit the part of his confidant.
Anyway, Clay and Ani being friends was fine, but where did this forceful romantic plotline come from? Dear writers, your main character does not always have to be in a relationship! We won’t respect Clay less just because he doesn’t get the girl. Honestly, most people will relate to him even more. Furthermore, it is important to show viewers, especially younger ones, that it is normal not to have a crush or date. The majority of teens doesn’t date in high school, and it’s frustrating to see characters always end up with somebody, like without that they can’t be complete or happy.
To be candid, Clay and Ani didn’t seem to have any chemistry. Both, their kiss and Ani telling her mom they’re dating, were unanticipated and out of place. There was no natural progression for them to be together at the end. After Clay finally sees Ani the way the viewers did all this time (ep 7), it’s difficult to find the moment where he starts to like her again or forgives her… Just because Ani comes up with the plan to save Alex from jail, it means Clay is in love with her? Clay? Angsty Clay who holds grudges and wants to take revenge on people (e.g. see season 1)? It’s hard to buy it.
Tumblr media
There was a theory that S3 was actually supposed to be narrated by Sheri. Unfortunately, Ajiona Alexus left the show. But could you imagine how much better would Sheri be instead of Ani. Sheri is a well developed character since season 1, who is liked by a lot of viewers. She has preexisting relationships with all the main characters, so it would be natural of them to confide in her. Not to mention her and Clay already had a thing in S1, so them ending up together in S3 would be logical and satisfying. Even if the concept of Sheri being the narrator couldn’t be brought to life, the next choice for that role would certainly be Clay aka the main character, not just a random new girl.
Taking into account the upcoming season 4, what can there be done to repair the damage? Even though some may argue it’s the easiest decision, I doubt that Ani’s character will be just written off (no matter how much I want it). I see only two possible outcomes. Either her character gets way less screen time, or she gets outstanding character development, although I have no idea what there could be done for the audience to like her. At last, it is vital that the writers get rid of her narration.
I hope the flaws of the last season will be fixed, because I’m excited to see where the story takes us next, and I don’t want to suffer through Ani’s character to find out.

I really enjoy reading Cassie in BMTL. Children in fic are usually my pet peeve because they’re written as overly precocious, or not behaving as children usually do, or cloyingly perfect, but you seem to have found the right balance because Cassie reads as a very believable 5-year-old, even with the political knowledge leanings, which is well within reason for her upbringing. Do you find it hard to write her and get that balance? And is it the same Cassie in ‘ask me, I won’t say no’?
Thank you very much! I’m very attached to Cassidy as a character, and am pleased that she seems to have won over BMTL readers. She is, honestly, a breath of fresh air to write compared to Dan and Amy…she’s fully transparent in a way that Dan and Amy aren’t with each other. Her age has a lot to do with that, of course…and I was very strategic with picking her age for this fic, which determined almost everything else about it, honestly, including the political plot. I needed her old enough to have a personality, but young enough to still be completely reliant on her parents, and also, crucially, to not consciously *understand* what her parents do and how it affects their lives. Considering who her parents are, I think it’s believable that Cassie has a highly-developed vocabulary for a five year old. But at the same time, she doesn’t *really* know what words like “polling” and “opposition research” mean…they’re just things that her parents deal with everyday, that she absorbs subconsciously, and thus mimics back out into the world like all kids do.
I think the trick with writing kids is just not to be too precious about them, especially when it’s Dan and Amy. Like, obviously they love Cassidy, but it’s not like parenting has changed who they are as people. They don’t think raising a kid is this magical, sacred experience (although Dan might claim otherwise on his Instagram), and I suspect they barely think of themselves as parents…just barely-functioning adults who’ve somehow managed to acquire a tiny, confounding human. I’ve tried to convey that half the time, they don’t really know what the fuck to do with Cassidy, and like all parents…sometimes they think she’s infuriating and annoying. Of course, I’ve enjoyed writing Dan as a dad, making him struggle with feelings while at the same time, genuinely enjoying certain parts of fatherhood…whatever the Veep writers thought, S1-S4 Dan would have come around pretty quickly to being a dad. The social benefits alone would be enough for Iannucci-Dan to understand, on some level, that he’ll have to ‘settle down’ at some point.
The hardest thing about writing Cassie has been figuring out how young children process death, at an age where they don’t *really* understand it but still have some sense of its permanence. This will be on display more fully in the forthcoming chapters. I also do go back and tweak dialogue and descriptions in the fic, somewhat frequently, and I’ve modified a few lines slightly to make them sound more realistic.
And regarding ask me, I won’t say no, I guess theoretically, it’s the same Cassie, but the fic isn’t a prologue to BMTL or anything like that…so then technically it’s a different Veep timeline, haha. I wrote it while I was drafting Bring Me to Light, and just didn’t bother choosing a different name. And I think I just call her “Cassie” in that one-shot, instead of Cassidy, which is technically her full name. I’m very attached to the name, though, so across all my Veep timelines, Dan and Amy will have a kid named Cassidy. Dan makes a reference in Ep. 2.09 to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid when he tells Amy they should go work for Chung, so Cassidy as a name feels Veep-approved. (But originally I chose it because it’s spunky, cute, sounds good with both Amy and Dan, and also is an Irish name. There’s a vague fandom consensus that Dan’s family is Irish.)
I have a thing about names…I’m incredibly picky about them. I realize part of this is completely subjective and up to one’s personal taste. But at the same time, names have history and context and cultural connotations. You have to pay attention to how they sound. There’s a rhythm to names you have to figure out. It’s a big pet peeve of mine in fanfic when people just assign names to characters without thinking them through. I walked around for a week thinking about names for Dan and Amy’s parents. And Amy and Dan are both fairly classic, traditional names, at least from an Anglo-American perspective (like many of the names on Veep). They would have never have a kid named…I don’t know…Chloe or Bella or Mia. Those names are cute and trendy, but they don’t “fit” with Dan and Amy in my opinion. (Sidenote: I always wonder who on the Veep creative team came up with the name Selina, because it’s such an unusual name for an American politician…a Selina would never be elected to high constitutional office the United States, and I’m only half-kidding when I say that.)
(Also, I hated the name Meagan for a Dan/Amy baby. Like, really hated it, and even though Dan took it off the table in the absolute worst way, I was relieved it was gone. Obviously Amy could not name her baby Meagan after that. Also, knowing how Mandel plotted Dan and Amy’s S7 storyline around certain jokes, I am decently sure they only picked the name because Meagan rhymes with Egan and they could play with that. Meagan makes me think of the word “meek”, which is…not a character trait associated with either Dan or Amy.)

Fanfiction Questions
from here
Fandom Questions
1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?
Involved as in ‘frantically read every book I could get my hands on, daydreamed about being part of that universe and wrote stories/made art inspired by the books, if not actual fanfiction’? Mm, probably The Chronicles of Narnia when I was six or seven. The next great obsession was The Silver Brumby when I went through my horse stage around age 12, and then Sweet Valley High when I was 15. Hahaha.
2. What is your latest fandom?
Marvel! I’m not into comics and I’m definitely not interested in consuming every last bit of canon material or memorising the variations of every universe, but I love (most of) the movies and Agents of SHIELD is pretty cool.
3. What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?
Star Trek Voyager. No contest. I venture to suggest that the older fandoms, the ones that are all about defunct shows, are a hell of a lot more chilled. Maybe because we’ve come to terms with our shitty canon endings and learned that liking the ship you hate doesn’t make someone problematic, unlike some newer fandoms I could name (Yes I’m talking about you, Game of Thrones fans. What the fuck.)
4. Do you regret getting involved in any fandoms?
I’ve dipped a toe into one or two fandoms for shows or books I’ve really enjoyed and backed the fuck out when the vibe gets weird (oh hey, it’s GoT again), but nope. No regrets.
5. Which fandoms have you written fanfiction for?
All the Star Treks except TOS, and a Trek/MCU crossover. I’d like to write more for MCU someday. Plus I’ve written longhand entire notebooks full of teen romance shit that bore an uncanny similarity to SVH, and my first short story was a fantasy fic that featured a girl whose guardian was a wise talking lion who led her into mystical secret worlds, which is kind of familiar.
6. List your OTP from each fandom you’ve been involved in.
Wow. I’m going to define ‘involved in’ as ‘cared enough about to have an OTP’, but I’m guaranteed to forget a ton. In no particular order:
Voyager: Janeway x anyone who can get her off
Discovery: Lorca x Cornwell or Pike x Tyler x Burnham (or any combination of)
DS9: Kira x Jadzia Dax
TNG: Picard x Vash, I guess? I don’t really have any TNG ships
ENT: T’Pol x Trip x Hoshi (or any variation therein)
MCU: Cap x Widow
AoS: Coulson x Skye... no May... no Skye... I don’t know
CAOS: Madam Satan x Zelda
Timeless: Garcy
The Good Place: Eleanor x Tahani
The 100 (shut up): toss up between Clarke x Bellamy and Kane x Abby
Veronica Mars: Veronica x Leo (first run), Veronica x Logan (s4)
Orphan Black: Cosima x Delphine
BSG: Apollo x Starbuck
SG1: Sam x Jack
Arrow: Olicity (so over the show now though)
This Life: Milly x Egg
Yeah you know what... I’m drawing a blank. I can’t think of any other shows where I’ve been invested in The Romance that much.
7. List your NoTPs from each fandom you’ve been in.
I’m too tired to do every fandom, and besides, I can come around to almost any ship if the headcanons (or fics) are convincing enough. I do have a few hard no-gos, but they might be someone else’s OTP so I’ll shut up about them.
8. How did you get involved in your latest fandom?
Reluctantly. The MCU movies are not something I ever thought I’d enjoy beyond a dull evening’s entertainment. I never expected to get attached to the characters. And yet.
9. What are the best things about your current fandom?
Voyager is my forever fandom and the only one where I’ve really interacted with other fans. The best things about it? In general, everyone is just cool, accepting, open and basically awesome. And talented. I love my Party Bus people.
10.  Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?
Sure. The 100, Veronica Mars and Agents of SHIELD are the ones I’d dip into more frequently. I really enjoy crossovers between Trek and BSG or the Stargate variants, too.
Ship Questions for your Current Fandom
11. Who is your current OTP?
Janeway x Chakotay.
12. Who is your current OT3?
Janeway x Chakotay x Paris.
13. Any NoTPs?
A few.
14. Go on, who are your BroTPs?
Janeway & Tuvok! Also Torres & Chakotay, and I’d have killed for more Janeway & Torres in canon. (If they kissed sometimes that would be okay too)
15. Is there an obscure ship which you love?
Yeah. Paris x Seven. There are like two fics in existence, and yet ... the potential! (Sorry, B’Elanna)
16. Are there any popular ships in your fandom which you dislike?
Nope.
17. Who was your first OTP and are they still your favourite?
Janeway x Paris. And they’re still way up there, but not quite at the top.
18. What ship have you written the most about?
84% of my fics feature Janeway x Chakotay as either the primary or secondary pairing... holy shit.
19. Is there a ship which you wished you could get behind, but you just don’t feel them?
Paris x Torres. I mean, I feel them. I just don’t generally feel the need to write about them.
20. Any ships which you surprised yourself by liking?
Chakotay x Seven. In another universe, it could’ve been beautiful.
Author Questions
21. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote?
Actual story that was clearly fanfic? A farcical drunken romp told in the 24th century equivalent of email format called PADDemonium (see what I did there?)
22. Is there anything you regret writing?
Lol, a few things that should probably have never seen the light of day for various reasons, some of them leola related. But I’ve only deleted two fics that I can recall.
23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.
Relieved. It’s a 30k AU Chakotay moral dilemma backstory that brings in DS9 characters, Section 31 and his longstanding history with AU Janeway. I did so much research for it (way back in the days before memory alpha and chakoteya.net) and I’m really proud of how I wound in canon stuff across series but changed a few key bits and pieces. Only problem is, it’s a sequel to ...
24. What fic do you desperately need to rewrite or edit?
... Pressure, which I can’t even read without cringing. My characterisation of Janeway, even Angry Maquis AU Janeway, is way over the top and there are moments that verge on Mills and Boon and give me first, second and third hand embarrassment. God, I’d love to rewrite it. Actually, that’s a lie. I want someone else to rewrite it so I can read it without covering my eyes and moaning.
25. What’s your most popular fanfic?
Desperate Measures, by about 70,000 light years, lol. Although Fragile Things beats it on bookmarks.
26. How do you come up with your fanfic titles?
You know what? A fair percentage of the time, I think of the title first and come up with a plot second. Aside from that, I prefer shorter, punchier titles that clearly tie into the story (Flight Risk, Speechless), though sometimes it’s song lyrics (Burn Our Horizons, your body like a searchlight) or a literary quote (Required to Bear, All the Devils are Here) or a turn of phrase from the story itself (The Prisons You Inhabit). Hey that was fun. Thanks for letting me pimp the shit out of my stories.
27. What do you hate more: Coming up with titles or writing summaries?
Ugh, it depends on the day. Summaries are harder, I think. I never want to give away too much of the plot, but there has to be enough there for people to know whether they’ll bother clicking. Funny story: I actually ran the stats on this a few months back. Here they are for your edification:
Fics with a one line plot summary = 54%
With two or three line plot summary = 18%
With a short snippet directly from the fic = 16%
With a snippet + a one line explanation = 3%
With a one line plot summary plus a line to date the fic (eg "set in season 3", “episode tag to Worst Case Scenario") or the fic prompt = 7%
And finally, a quote from something other than the fic = 2% (that's only 3 fics).
28. If someone were to draw a piece of fanart for your story, which story would it be and what would the picture be of?
Ooh. I’ll say the final scene in Explosive.
29. Do you have a beta reader? Why/Why not?
I used to regularly ask @jhelenoftrek and @littleobsessions90 to beta for me, and both of them are brilliant at it. Lately I’ve been posting without sending my stuff off for editing. This is partly because I’m impatient to get stuff out there, partly because I don’t have as much time to write/edit, and partly because I’m a little less focused on improving my writing and more on enjoying it for its own sake.
30. What inspires you to write?
Little bits of episode dialogue I haven’t noticed before, other people’s fanfiction, stray conversations, fic prompts, song lyrics, random headcanons, fever dreams, dares ...
31. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?
I’ve been really lucky with comments on my fic. The least helpful comment I’ve ever received was on one of my early 30k fics and all it said was “Did you have to take the name of the lord in vain?” Which is kind of funny. The nicest thing anyone’s ever said? I’m very partial to the feedback that starts “I don’t even like this pairing/genre/trope/show but you made me love it”, and particularly “I’ll read anything you write, I don’t care what it’s about.” But all comments are gold. The little heart button is cool too.
32. Do you listen to music when you write or does music inspire you? If so, which band or genre of music does it for you?
I’m not someone who can tune out music I love, or leave it in the background to inspire me. If it’s on, I’m fully invested in it. I’m that annoying person in the car who flips radio stations every three seconds until I find something I like and then it’s on 11 and I’m singing along to it. I’m also really picky but extremely eclectic, although there are genres I can’t stand (anything with autotune makes me stabby). That said, sometimes I find a song that I can’t stop listening to for weeks and often that perfect combination of music and lyrics will inspire me to write a fic. For example, I just plotted out an entire J/C story because of this song.
33. Do you write oneshots, multi-chapter fics or huuuuuge epics?
All of the above. Although I’m not sure if my longest epic is huuuuuge or just huuuge.
34. What’s the word count on your longest fic?
101,467.
35. Do you write drabbles? If so, what do you normally write them about?
I have two drabble collections. One is all J/C, full of responses to random prompts and I add to it sporadically. The other is episode additions set on Kathryn Janeway’s birthday (May 20) and added to annually.
36. What’s your favourite genre to write?
Angst, definitely. Sometimes it’s smutty angst or fluffy angst or hurt/comfort angst, but often it’s just fucking unrelenting angst. And I’m okay with that.
37. First person or third person - what do you write in and why?
I did the stats on this once, too, haha. Pretty sure I came out fairly even on first and third person with a smattering of second person in there. I’m probably even-ish on present vs past tense, too. I make it a point to mix it up to avoid my writing getting stale or same-y. And sometimes a fic doesn’t really click for me until I try it in a different POV or tense or from a different character’s perspective.
38. Do you use established canon characters or do you create OCs?
I mostly write for canon characters - the fun is in all the different ways you can interpret and imagine them - but I’ve been known to throw in the odd OC, or focus on a character who only got a brief cameo appearance, or write about someone who only appears in beta canon, or who only rates a mention on screen.
39. What is your greatest strength as a writer?
Oh, wow. I’m not sure. I guess the thing I value most about my own writing is my willingness to try different styles, characters, pairings and so on. The thing I strive for most is characterisation that feels true, and I really love it when I get comments on that. Exploring a character in a way that rings true with a reader is the best thing ever.
40. What do you struggle the most with in your writing?
Overly long sentences and adverb abuse, haha. No, truthfully, there comes a point in most of my fics, particularly the longer ones, when I really just want to scrap it because in my heart I know it’s dreadful. Usually that passes once I slog through the ‘I don’t wanna’ stage because I’m a bloody-minded bitch, but sometimes fics do get left in the dust half-written. Honestly, though, they’re the ones that probably should stay there.
Fanfiction Questions
41. List and link to 5 fanfics you are currently reading:
This is hilarious because I was just talking on discord about my problematic ‘to read’ pile. My unread AO3 subscription emails currently number 29 and my phone browser has 71 tabs open. So here are 5 random picks from that list of exactly 100 fics I should be reading:
Sex on the Beach (E, Janeway/Chakotay) by @traccigaryn
The Ruby Ring (T, Janeway/Chakotay, Janeway/Tighe) by @trinfinity2001
Earth is But an Idea (T, Janeway/Chakotay, Carter/O’Neill) by @caladeniablue
Home (E, Janeway/Chakotay) by Cassatt
Wise Up (E, Janeway/Chakotay) by KimJ
42. List and link to 5 fanfiction authors who are amazing:
Only five? Shit. Okay. In no particular order, these are five of the writers I keep coming back to:
quantumsilver (also here)
northernexposure
LittleObsessions
Helen8462
Cheshire
But there are so many others. My chosen fandom is chock full of amazing talent.
43. Is there anyone in your fandom who really inspires you?
All of the authors above for various reasons, but also august because her writing is so spare and delicate and devastating, and runawaymetaphor because she writes the most delicious Janeway/Paris, and @seperis because I read In the Space of Seven Days literally 20 years ago and I still haven’t recovered, and I could be here all night raving on this topic but there are still many questions to get through.
44. What ship do you feel needs more attention?
Janeway x Paris. I’m so happy there’s been a little bit of a resurgence in J/P fics lately. Thanks, @curator-on-ao3, you’re doing the lord’s work.
I’ll also take Janeway x Johnson content any day of the week.
45. What is your all time favourite fanfic?
What the hell? I can’t pick just one! Ugh!
... but okay, here’s the first one that came to mind when I tried to think about this: if you came this way by tree. I’m not sure I’d call it my favourite, but it’s one I revisit often. Ugh, there are so many other fics I’m thinking of now that I really want to list.
46. If someone was to read one of your fanfics, which fic would you recommend to them and why?
Oh, that’s hard. I should probably pick an angsty smutty J/C because that’s a fair proportion of what I write and it’s good to let a new reader know what they can expect. But honestly, I think the best fic I’ve written is The Uncharted Sea. (It’s safe for work. Maybe not for makeup.)
47. Archive Of Our Own, Fanfiction.net or Tumblr - where do you prefer to post and why?
The Archive, of course. Where else can I find ad-free hosting on a stunningly user-friendly interface with absolutely no moralising content restrictions and the world’s best tagging system? That Hugo award is well deserved.
Tumblr is good for headcanons and meta and gifsets and a few other formats that I’m less likely to post on AO3 because I’d feel like I was pissing off people who subscribe to me by giving them some random garbage.
I also have my own website, but I’m not really sure why. Sometimes I post fic there that doesn’t make it to tumblr or AO3.
48. Do you leave reviews when you read fanfiction? Why/Why not?
I try to. Honestly I do. I love it when I get reviews, so I figure paying it forward is the least I can do. I’m less scrupulous about leaving comments when I’m busy or reading on my phone.
49. Do you care if people comment/reblog your writing? Why/why not?
I mean, I love it when people reblog, but I certainly don’t expect it. @arcadia1995 is amazing for reblogging stuff *blows kisses*
Nobody owes fanfic writers shit, but I feel like there’s a tacit agreement that if you like what you just read for free and you’re on a platform that makes it easy to do so, you leave a review or at least a kudos, because I’m not gonna lie, posting a fic you’ve worked super hard on and seeing it get very few kudos or comments is a bit deflating. I’m sure a lot of us have been there.
50. How did you get into reading and/or writing fanfiction?
During Voyager’s original run I was trawling the internet for Endgame spoilers (I don’t know why; I usually love surprises) and I guess I googled (or whatever the 2001 equivalent of googling was) something like “how does voyager get home” and somehow I stumbled across Revisionist History. At first I had no idea what I was reading - was this a lost story pitch that somehow got leaked? A professional novella commissioned by the showrunners?
Then I started following links and discovered yahoo groups and webrings and Trekiverse and fanfiction.net and all sorts of incredible things I’d never guessed at, including the now defunct ‘archipelago of angst’, a collection of Voyager writers who focused mainly on a darker Janeway than most of the other fic writers I was encountering, and I was hooked. So I wrote a few of my own pieces, and then I lost interest for 15 years. I’m still not sure how I got dragged back in.
51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!
Honestly, in what other way can I indulge my obsessions, hone my skills and talk about it endlessly with like-minded people? Where else can I instantly find a plethora of fiction about the exact topic I feel like reading about on my mobile device and for free? Fanfiction is fucking amazing and I’m so glad it exists in my life.

Starker for 002 in the ask thing if you wouldn't mind dear author 💜 -StarkerBrain3000
002 | send me a ship and I will tell you:
when of if I started shipping it.
Hard to pinpoint. I saw it probably just after Civil War for the first time, thought ‘hmm’ and then watched the massive backlash to it appear. Never paid much attention to it, though, mostly because starker didn’t sit in any of my inner circle of blogs I follow at the time, so most of it was peripheral and given the weird amount of hate Tony’s character got I already only followed hella select blogs in the MCU fandom.
I got way more into the ship about 3 months ago though. Went on a reading binge and then made this blog. I’m not sure why it happened to be when it was, but I’m already established as a fic writer elsewhere and felt a bit burnt out. This pairing has been like a nice vacation because I like producing content for it and this is a surprisingly interactive fandom? The most interactive I’ve ever dealt with anyway.
my thoughts:
Good lord people on this site take shipping and fiction in general way too seriously. Don’t get me wrong, I live and breath social justice- I have a gender studies degree- its a big part of my life. But antis seem to fundamentally misunderstand how fiction affects reality and how reality affects fiction. They remind me a lot of anti porn feminists in the 70′s claiming that porn made men violent towards women when that’s A- not definitively proven even now and B- you don’t watch an hour long porn flick and become a misogynist, you were already misogynistic and then the porn reaffirmed your shitty values, and the shitty treatment of women in the porn was because misogyny already existed in mainstream culture and was thus included in the porn. Which is generally how fiction affecting reality works- something preexisting in the culture is reinforced by mainstream media and then reabsorbed by the audience, which is why people can watch slashers without you know, turning into one.
And the fact that antis remind me of that particular group of feminists doesn’t leave me with a high opinion of them really. They lack a lot of critical thinking skills, don’t even seem to understand how fan fiction works also, and they also keep redefining the definition of pedophilia for... fuck knows what reason because it sure shit isn’t to help victims of actual CSA. They’re irritating at best and absolute hypocrites at worst- like who the hell says ‘save the children, kill yourself’ and thinks that’s actually acceptable?
As for the ship itself I’ve always preferred AUs, and this pairing is no exception though I’d never actually write it in canon. Canon sideways maybe, but it’d have to be pretty sideways for me to consider it. Plus I find it more fun to make my own sandbox to play in rather than the writers of the MCU’s box. I’ve already seen them in that setting, I want to play with them in new settings lol. That said I’ve not written much of this pairing before so its all new stuff and this particular fandom offers new tropes to play around with! That’s what had me most excited walking into the fandom, the way people toyed with the characters.
What makes me happy about them:
The unique dynamic they have- I’ve always been drawn to characters who have an interesting dynamic. Plus Tony Stark is one of my fav characters in anything anyway and I ship him with almost everyone (minus Pepper, no hate to Pepper!). I figure that’s why this ship came about too- Tony is interesting and well drawn out as a character, and I loved Tom Holland’s Spidey. He’s the best who’s had the character in my opinion so pairing them together was probably something inevitable. Other than that I like the way the fandom toys with their characters- not always in character, but still a lot of fun to read and imagine!
What makes me sad about them:
Well, half of them are dead, so...
things done in fanfic that annoys me:
Good god, daddy kink. Its not even that I find it annoying, its just that its a hell of a squick for me so its difficult to find something that doesn’t include that and surprise daddy kink is not where I’m at as a person. Granted most people warn for it, which I’m grateful for, but it does permeate the fandom in a way that makes it a pain in the ass to find something I want. And honestly that’s really only it, and its more of a personal preference (seriously, no hate to anyone who likes that- you’re clearly all in good company lol, its just not for me) than an actual annoyance.
things I look for in fanfic:
I’m really picky about how I like Tony written. I’ve been writing the character for years now and fell into my own habits with him, though I do get pretty consistent compliments on how I write him so I’ll assume I do an okay job. But the result is that I have a hard time when people write him in ways I don’t like or wouldn’t write myself. Sometimes its just random squicks that pop up in a story, or sometimes I outright dislike the way he’s written. That said I do find that the starker fandom does the things I hate with Tony’s characterization in fic much less.
This, I think, is primarily due to the fact that he’s made the more dominant one in the relationship always (and people treating top/bottom like its a fucking dominance thing is something that annoys me in general mostly because its built on the misogynistic idea that being penetrated is being dominated but also because sex positions aren’t a fucking personality trait but I digress). As per my previous rant I don’t care for the idea of the ‘top’ being the dominating one based on that alone, but I do like that people writing Tony in that way reduces the amount of Wuss Tony fics in the fandom. Actually, I don’t think I’ve read a single one like that. Its my Number One I Hate That in other MCU pairings, making Tony some weak little waif in need of protecting. Though I gotta admit I don’t care for Peter in that position either- clearly he’s capable and able, please don’t turn him into the wuss. Bonus points if everyone thinks he’s soft but then oh no he’s actually dangerous shit lmao.
Still though, my pickiness over how the character is written can sometimes hinder my ability to enjoy a fic.
My kinks:
Bro finding an entire fandom who likes feminizing dudes if fucking mint. I have my issues with the term, but I do feel men get the ass end of the stick when it comes to aesthetics and the easiest solution is to stick them in aesthetically pleasing shit and if that’s women’s clothing and lingerie so be it lmao. I also like the kind of gender bending that goes on in that too, I find it subversive in a way that doesn’t need to be spoken aloud if I want to swing it that way, or flat out more pleasing to imagine. Seriously, men’s clothing is boring as fuck so skirts? I’m here for it. Though I wish there was more fem!Tony stuff in the starker fandom- its actually something I write a lot of when I write him in other pairings (particularly winteriron).
Other than that I’m a big fan of anything sensation play related. So ice play, things fucking about with heat, sometimes electric play stuff, taking away someone’s senses (blind folds, bondage, blocking out hearing in some way- that type of thing). Things like feathers are nice too. I’m also fond of gags, preference for ball gags or impromptu cleave gags. Theoretically soft dom stuff though I will never understand why bondage is considered not terribly kinky. I know a lot of people are into it but the idea of trusting someone enough to tie me up and actually listen if I decide I want out of it? I have too many trust issues to relate lmao. But it does make for a good bit of fiction as I’m sure some of you have noticed in my writing (given that I do love to write some kinky stuff). If you want something sex related specifically for whatever reason public sex gets my goat, not sure why because if I were a random passerby I’d be pretty fucking annoyed at the people in the bathroom but hey, whatever floats your boat on the page, right lmao.
I’ve thought about some more extreme things too, knife play and toying with things like fear being two of those things. But I’d have to have the right opportunity and context to work them in.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:
Well, Tony is dead so. I would have preferred him with literally anyone but Pepper though. He literally had more romantic chemistry with Rhodey (who I do incidentally ship him with). But the MCU is  bunch of cowards so clearly they would never end up together. But they’d make a better pairing than him and Pepper, in my opinion.
Peter I’m fine with him being with MJ, I like them together on screen and I really like her character. If not her than Ned would also be a good pairing for him!
My happily ever after for them:
Well we gunna have to unkill some people but that’s what fanfic is for, right? Beyond that because I prefer AUs so much their happily ever after will depend entirely upon what universe I’ve imagined up for them :)

Because I’m currently unemployed and my province is in recession wooo
GET TO KNOW THE BLOGGER.
Can be used for RP and non-RP blogs to get to know a bit about the person behind the screen!
1. FIRST NAME: Ashli
2. STRANGE FACT ABOUT YOURSELF: I can say the alphabet faster backwards than forwards. I am also a proud BlackBerry user in 2020.
3. TOP THREE PHYSICAL THINGS YOU FIND ATTRACTIVE ON A PERSON: Eyes and smile are the first things I notice. After that I feel like it’s different things I find attractive on a person or reflective on personality.
4. A FOOD YOU COULD EAT FOREVER AND NOT GET BORED OF: Hungarian-style cabbage rolls. Beef belongs in them, not pork.
5. A FOOD YOU HATE: Meat pies of any sort (they’re too rich for my palette to handle and literally make me feel sick).
6. GUILTY PLEASURE: I don’t believe in feeling guilty about things I enjoy if they’re not hurting anyone.
7. WHAT DO YOU SLEEP IN: In the winter I go full-on fleece PJ’s because I’m Albertan and it gets down to -40*C here. In the summer, a t-shirt or tank top and Lululemon pants/shorts.
8. SERIOUS RELATIONSHIPS OR FLINGS: Serious relationships because I lack self esteem.
9. IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN THE PAST AND CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE, WOULD YOU AND WHAT WOULD IT BE: Generally speaking I believe everything happens for a reason, however, as a recently unemployed journalist, I do wish I had paid more attention to job openings while working at my last newspaper that was shut down in January. I genuinely loved what I was doing, where I was working ( the pay was practically minimum wage but it was a job), so I didn’t pay attention to them before, and now I’m literally living in one of the worst areas of my country to find a job, and unable to afford moving to where there’s work.
10. ARE YOU AN AFFECTIONATE PERSON: If I’m comfortable with the person, yes.
11. A MOVIE YOU COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AGAIN: The Star Wars prequels.
12. FAVOURITE BOOK: I read a lot so it’s impossible for me to narrow down to one book. The Harry Potter series (specifically Prisoner of Azkaban) will probably be amongst my favourites, especially given it was the first book series that made me love reading. Beastly by Alex Flinn is one of my go-to rereads when I’m looking for something romantic because I really enjoy the way the book is written, and as a girl that often ends up RPing guys, it’s nice to have that “male” type perspective on a romantic relationship. The Immortals Series by Tamora Pierce is also a long-standing favourite.
13. YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO KEEP ANY ANIMAL AS A PET, WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE: Cats. I could so easily by a “crazy cat lady,” but I just have two at the moment.
14. TOP FIVE FICTIONAL SHIPS [IF YOU ARE AN RP BLOG, YOU CAN USE YOUR OWN SHIPS AS WELL]: Dearka x Miriallia (Gundam SEED, obvs.), Anakin x Padme (Star Wars), Trunks x Pan (DBZ), Mitsuhide x Kiki (Snow White with the Red Hair), Sakura x Syaoran (Cardcaptors)
15. PIE OR CAKE: Cake. I’m super picky with pie.
16. FAVOURITE SCENT: The smell in the air after it’s rained in the summer, OR what my sister and I like to call “warm sunny kitty,” which is how the kitties smell after they’ve been sleeping in a sunbeam all afternoon.
17. CELEBRITY CRUSH: I don’t really crush on celebrities as much as I’ll find a character attractive in a show or movie that I’m watching. I recently binged “Spinning Out” on Netflix which unfortunately got cancelled after the first season, and I really liked Justin Davis, played by Evan Roderick, so I guess he might count as my current celeb crush?
18. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO: Right now  I’m very much in Star Wars obsession mode so I’d like to go to Disney World to check out Galaxy’s Edge. Eventually I want to see the life-size Gundam in Japan and visit Cat Island, and visit Greece and Italy.
19. INTROVERT OR EXTROVERT: 100 per cent an introvert.
20. DO YOU SCARE EASILY: Probably.
21. IPHONE OR ANDROID: Android. Apples rot.
22. DO YOU PLAY ANY VIDEO GAMES: Yeah, I’m slowly catching up on games while I’m unemployed. Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is a recent favourite, but I’m super excited about the remaster of FFVII coming out.
23. DREAM JOB:  I don’t like limiting myself which is why I like being a journalist/photojournalist where I get to experience and do a number of different things. That said, if I could do nothing but shoot events for a newspaper - and sadly newspapers don’t employ straight photographers anymore - that would be ideal. Potentially I wouldn’t mind delving into the political realm with behind the scenes stuff, or combine my love for nerdy things with writing/photography and somehow get paid for it. And paid more than just above minimum wage LOL.
24. WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH A MILLION DOLLARS: Buy my dream camera, the Canon ID X, repair the gear I have that needs to go in. I’d look into opening up a viable independent local newspaper for central Alberta that isn’t tied down to a corporate, American-based chain or operating as a political propaganda machine, and once I have some job security, move into a place of my own.
25. FICTIONAL CHARACTER YOU HATE: Athrun Zala. He’s very much a self-righteous character that believes he’s the only one that really knows what’s going on, and the only one who NEEDS to know what’s going on. Much of the friction he created within the Le Creuset Team was as a result of him not letting his teammates know that Kira was a friend and Coordinator piloting the Strike. I believe they would’ve approached battles differently if they had known, and it would’ve eliminated the doubts of Athrun’s leadership when they were searching for the Archangel on Orb, and honestly may have saved Nicol’s life in the end. If he wasn’t so self-righteous, he also wouldn’t have played into Durandal’s hand in Destiny, trust Kira and even Lacus to be on the right side of things, and perhaps even prevented that whole Cagalli-Yuuna situation. He might even actually let one of the many women fawning over him (he honestly doesn’t seem interested in ANY OF THEM, Cagalli included), and let Dearka and Yzak know what was going on in Destiny when they were left in the dark about Durandal’s master plan, and what role the Archangel and Athrun were playing in the war.
I guess what bothers me, too - and it could just be the Dearka in me talking - but he gets preferential treatment a lot. As far as I know, the story is Dearka was demoted for his defection from ZAFT, while Athrun, who defected AFTER Dearka and didn’t even have the balls to return right after the war returned in Destiny and was given back his red coat and a FAITH badge as if he’d never done anything wrong in ZAFT’s eyes....only to pull the same shit again.
Honestly, the man has no direction in life, and is somehow lauded as a hero and exempted from any sort of repercussions of his actions.
26. FANDOM THAT YOU WERE ONCE A PART OF BUT AREN’T ANY LONGER: Voltron. Miriallia-mun and I were both into Voltron when it came out and even cosplayed Hunk and Keith together and it was the best. But as it goes with many fandoms, the show got hijacked by brutal shipping wars where one couldn’t just enjoy the show. The fandom then became really toxic, calling for the creators to be assaulted or worse at conventions, or insinuating they were homophobic because they didn’t make their slash pairing canon. I couldn’t have cared less about ships in the show, and the final season showed some catering to toxic fan pressure and had some poor plot points which honestly left me uninterested in watching the show after the final season.

all of them for romeo
ask  me  questions  right  NOW
who  will  they  take  advice  from,  no  matter  what  it  is?  who  won’t  they  take  advice  from,  no  matter  what  it  is?
who  will  they  take  advice  from??  easy ….  no  one  …..  KJSDKFJ.  rom  is  a  smart  kid  when  it  comes  to  academics,  but  that  aside  he’s  not  very  emotionally  intelligent  and  the  worst  part  about  it  is  that  he  refuses  to  let  other  people  influence  his  choices  regardless….  he  has  such  a  weird  way  of  thinking  and  he  knows  it  but  everything  just  makes  sense  in  his  head???  he  justifies  everything  he  does  so  it’s  not  like  he  makes  dumb  decisions  just  bc  he  wants  to.  so  like.  yeah  he’s  not  gonna  listen  to  someone  else  when  he  thinks  that  the  things  he  does  are  definitely  logical.  for  example  when  his  dumbass  switched  majors…..  he  told  no  one  he  was  gonna  do  it  because  he  didn’t  want  anyone  else’s  input  and  he  def  wouldn’t  have  listened  to  them  anyway  …..  for  smaller  things  tho  obviously  he  wouldn’t  mind  advice  but  honestmeme  unless  ur  his  parents  he  simply  will  not  listen  if  he’s  already  made  up  his  mind  …  in  conclusion  someone  please  get  him  a  therapist  for  christmas
do  they  like  romance  in  the  books  they  read  (or  in  the  book  they’re  in)?
yeah  but  he’s  annoyingly  picky ….  he  doesn’t  really  read  as  much  as  he  used  to  when   he  was  a  kid  (lets  go  third  grade  rom  reading  at  tenth  grade  lvl  where  is  that  energy  now)  but  when  he  gets  the  chance  to  he  tends  to  gravitate  towards  stories  that  have  romance  in  them,   though  there  has  to  be  some  other  element  thrown  in  there  bc  just  romance  bores  him.  even  though  he  gives  off  love  interest  in  a  coming  of  age  book  vibes …  he  rlly  thinks  those  kinds  of  characters  and  books  are  boring.  so  fcking  boring.  did  not  enjoy  any  john  green  book  nor  did  he  get  the  hype,  thought  augustus  waters  was  pretentious  and  don’t  get  him  started  on  lfa.  so  yeah  he  likes  romance  when  it’s  done  well  but  he  doesn’t  necessarily  seek  it  out  and  won’t  die  if  it’s  not  there.  he  has  what  u  may  call  “high  standards”  ig  which  sends  bc  he’s  just  a  lil  more  developed  version  of  every  soft  boy  next  door  character  that  he  finds  soooo  annoying   and  soooo  pretentious.  anyway  yes  mans  just  wants  to  read  some  mystery  and  dystopian  books  in  peace  but  well -  written  romance  is  always  a  plus
what  age  do  they  most  want  to  be  right  now?
you  don’t  know  how  BAD  rom  just  wants  to  be  like.  35.  that  exact  age  for  no  reason  other  than  he  romanticizes  the  idea  of  being  ~  settled  down  ~  and  being  in  a  goood  place  career - wise  and  not  having  to  worry  about  whether  or  not  he’s  made  the  right  choice  and  if  he’s  gonna  graduate  uni  n  end  up  living  on  the  streets  until  he  has  a  stable  income  (IF  he  gets  there   haha)  or  whether  or  not  he’s  gonna  be  able  to  come  for  christmas  but  yeah  he  really  loves  the  idea  of  all  of  this  being  OVER  and  his  parents  finally  coming  around  and  visiting  his  tiny  studio  in  new  york  for  thanksgiving  while  he  tells  them  all  abt  his  next  project  and  (hopefully)  being  married  along  w/  kids ….  if  he  wasn’t  so  worried  about  his  career  and  where  he’s  going  to  end  up  tho  he  rlly  wouldn’t  mind  the  age  he’s  at  rn  like ….  he’s  in  his  prime ….  but  yeah  he’s  too  caught  up  in  the  uncertainty  of  whether  or  not  he  made  the  right  choice  to  be  fully  comfortable  w/  being  here  SDKJFJSD  but  that’s  life  he’s  gotta  deal  w/  it  he’s  not  special

Rambling “Booksmart” thoughts from my 3 viewings of it (spoilers below!)
1) How much was I like Molly & Amy in high school? My senior quote included a quote from The Hours: "Perhaps there is nothing, ever, that can equal the recollection of having been young together. Maybe it's as simple as that." That, for me, actually sums up a lot of the joys of this movie. It wasn't angsty or taking itself too seriously like Lady Bird; it wasn't about shitting on its main character like Edge of Seventeen; it wasn't about loneliness like Eighth Grade; it wasn't about meanness like most of Mean Girls - it was about all the incredible joys that come with being a teenager, whichever way you choose to teen.
lots of rambling thoughts-
-the chemistry/casting is a huge part of what elevates this to something golden. I just completely accept that Kaitlyn & Beanie have been best friends since birth. sign me tf up. Give them Michael Cera and Jonah Hill's careers!! -Billie Lourd's entrance is one of the funniest things I've ever seen and then every time she popped up was just another miracle of laughter -this is like. soft Daria & Jane. Daria and Jane were a bit before my time but their '90s cynicism was something my friends and I were really drawn to and there weren't a whole lot of teenage girls repped in media who felt like us and we loved them. What I also really liked about that show is that, like this movie, it was not afraid to slap its protagonists on the wrists for judging "cool"/popular kids. Daria and Jane loved each other but the one time you saw them do anything remotely affectionate in the show was in the last (I believe?) episode when Daria hugs Jane and Jane is stunned/seemed kind of uncomfortable with it. I loved the love between Molly and Amy, its openness, it's two-way Ann & Leslie feel -being best friends with the teacher? Seriously, legit. I was super close to my favorite teacher junior year and then she moved away that summer and gave me her phone number so we could keep in touch. /I've been that person who would still meet up with my favorite gym teacher like years after graduating, just to get lunch and catch up -while this genre of comedy is usually a tad too crass for me, I realized it made a huge difference when it's made by/about girls - one of whom is a lesbian!!! It's not just nonstop escalating dick jokes! It doesn't demean or hypersexualize teenage girls!! Groundbreaking!!! It wasn't like, let's be as gross as possible because dicks are everyone's favorite thing to talk about. the sex jokes felt super real/were derived from very real things (oh, Ling Ling) -that scene in the swimming pool was gorgeous. everything about it. -I liked that Amy had a crush on a girl who wasn't just like Conventional Hot Chick. A straight dude writing/directing this very likely would've done that -I think maybe most poignantly, this movie made me miss high school. So many teen movies are about how high school sucks, how it's the worst, how it's lame, isolating, or scary. This reminded me of all my fun times with my friends and what a great ride we had -my generation's high school movie was Mean Girls. An iconic and hilarious film, but not at all kind to lesbians. Having one of the leads be an out lesbian in this film, to see her be the one who gets to hook up (well, almost / I do think that happened way too fast for her character but whatever) - that is revolutionary. I'm so so so so glad for (and a little jealous of) Gen Z's wlw who get to own this movie. Lesbians aren't the butt of the joke or the freaks anymore. They're the lead you're rooting for. -BILLIE LOURD
(A couple of small quibbles: I realize it's a staple of the genre, but I didn't love the girls getting drugged. I guess it was a creative way of doing that kind of sequence but eh. Also, Molly's comment about porn being like a documentary for an inexperienced lesbian is ... not good!! Yes the Cardi B joke was funny but young wlw, that porn was not made for you in mind and if you must, proceed with caution! And whether you're straight or gay, making out with someone who was mean to you, just to prove a point, is... not the best. Molly had a bunch of set-ups to telegraph that she'd end up with the sweet/desperate rich boy; I would've loved more set-up for the girl Amy ended up with)
2) More things I love:
-how this captures that people stop caring about cliques in senior year. I remember 2 of my grade’s coolest girls like adopting me partway through senior year because we had some classes together and they thought I was funny. Suddenly they were saying hi to me in the hallway amidst all their super cool friends and even though Being Cool had never been a goal of mine I felt so legit bc these two crazy popular girls liked me. I thought of that when Nick exudes nothing but sheer joy at the sight of Molly at his party. It’s so sweet. -Barcelona -I love that this movie doesn’t fall into the cliche of making The Cool Boy Our Protagonist Likes into a douche so she’ll go swoon into the arms of the less cool guy who likes her. Nick may be a shameless flirt but he isn’t written as someone who’s evil and I like that -I love that they never go “omg, I can’t believe Ryan’s straight!” The belief that she’s queer is not challenged -Amy grinning like an idiot when Ryan’s arm touches her leg :))) -with the close-ups of feminist accoutrement in Molly’s room and the bumper stickers on Amy’s car, it really struck me how amazing it is that these are our leads. Characters like this were the least popular ones/people who got made fun of in shows/movies when I was growing up (see: Jessie on Saved By the Bell). I LOVE that unrepentant feminism is such a huge part of them -Billie Lourd takes my breath away -I want to take Hailee Steinfeld’s character out of EDGE OF SEVENTEEN and put her in this movie, where Molly and Amy would befriend her and she could date someone who wasn’t a sexist dick -I still wish Hope had been a little better developed/hadn’t been so mean -I want to hang out with my high school friends
3) Third time seeing this and honestly laughed just as hard as I did the previous two times. The jokes all land and the deliveries, the facial expressions, the camaraderie is all perfect. I like that the notion of pushing past stereotypes is even applied to Amy’s parents, when Molly makes a comment about them being Christians who totally accept their lesbian daughter. That was a nice, small touch. (It also comes up again when the pizza delivery man who, while a douche, seems to be being nice in some way by warning them to be safe and turns out to be a wanted criminal).
Also - is Avril Lavigne’s Sk8r Boi a dated reference for this movie? Is Sully? Do the kids not have to sit alphabetically at graduation? Because everyone’s grouped with their friends. Also I went with my gay bff to see this and we died bc the theater kid’s extreme reaction when Molly kissed the dude on stage was exactly my friend’s reaction from a moment before. And if the party was so late, couldn’t they have had dinner with Amy’s parents? They’re so sweet and they put so much effort into that adorable meal (I loved Lisa Kudrow in this omg). Why did they not pick her up from jail? Why did they not take her to the airport?? (These aren’t super important questions, I guess, I’m just being kinda nit-picky. I love the last shot/line of the movie)
I’m glad it’s where it is not.I do still kinda feel like we could’ve done without the teacher hooking up with the 20-year-old student. Not sure what that brought to the table and I actually thought her saying “how crazy would that be if I just showed up?” was funny without her actually showing up. At a party with all her students. Did no one else notice her there?

-A/n: A little teaser for what coming! I’ve never written a true au before in my life so please give me constructive feedback. I’d really appreciate any comment at all you guys have so I can do better in the future. I feel like I’ve always gotten away with very simple au, and this was truly a challenge and I don’t think I’ve done the best job.

Chapter 0 - Introduction
1 - Hanbin’s group
Tumblr media
Kim Hanbin:
Tumblr media
For a boy with heart made out of gold, Hanbin’s childhood was anything but. Faulted for having his head in the cloud, his peers thought of him as insane simply because their parents never liked the way his imagination fueled the curiosity in his heart. Always asking what-ifs and how-its, he was far ahead for anyone his age and had it not been for the why-nots he’d asked so often, Hanbin could’ve easily been deemed a genius. His parents had always told him to believe with all his might for at one point in time, visiting the moon was mere stuff of fiction. But he was still lonely, isolated for believing in things beyond what was presented, worlds outside the scope that was comprehensible by simpleton. The night after he had received his letter, Hanbin was restless for the universe had exploded in questions, but most important of all, it gave him an answer for his loneliness. The moment he had read the first line of the letter, bold and prideful “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry”, Hanbin felt at home. He felt at home even though he knew nothing of this magical world, or even that he was someone they referred to as muggle-born. Hanbin finally felt like he belong.  Kim Jiwon:
Tumblr media
Jiwon had always been a force of life despite being dealt the worst cards even before he was old enough for school. His family wasn’t rich, barely making ends meet even, but what they had was love. His parents and brother love him very much and those around him knew, they knew that they’re the reason for the sparkles inside his heart. Jiwon felt like summer’s firework to those around him, warm and vibrant. He had the courage to conquer the world but also the heart to realize being on top wasn’t everything. He understood struggle, the hardship of life and how it could callous even the softest heart. Perhaps his compassion was his downfall for he too began to sympathize with the wrong crowd. He thought it was cool to be around the sort of people his parents had so sternly described as “the wrong sort”. His brother didn’t understand and parents disapproving of seemingly anything he did. So in the end, he was lonely in his own home. something was missing in his heart and it wasn’t until he had met his fellow housemates that he realized what it really was, real friends. They taught him the true value of friendship and that to be brave, he needed to be openminded about things his old crowd would laughed at him for. For the first time in years, he had dreams, he wasn’t afraid of being happy, and he wasn’t ashamed of his likes and dislikes. And for the first time in his life, he found a purpose, realized that home extended to even those who aren’t related when a certain young captain extended a welcoming hand and taught Jiwon what quidditch really meant.
Tumblr media
Cr.
Kim Donghyuk:
Tumblr media
There was no doubt that Donghyuk was the epitome of sunshine and the crisp warmth of summer, and he himself wouldn’t dare argue or deny the fact. Yet there was a part of himself that no one knew, beyond the happiness that could be felt simply just by being near him. There was a darkness in his heart that fueled his fascination, dictated his interest that no one understood. For someone who was so often liken to the sun, Donghyuk had always thought the best time of day was when the sun safely tucked away in bed. The stars so brightly shine above, magnificent and ethereal. His favorite season? Winter when the sun barely shine, shied away behind a dark plume of cloud, rainfall or snowfall, he wasn’t picky. Donghyuk had always felt out of place, the constant expectation weighted down his shoulders and it too, weighted down his heart, dulled the light behind his eyes. He felt as if there was no place in this world for him, no place he could truly be himself and belong... No place until a young Gryffindor captain breathed the most beautiful sentiment after a night out star watching. “Stars cannot shine without darkness.” It seemed so simple, just a passing comment yet nothing had ever resonated with his heart the way the strange boy did. Donghyuk could see too a loneliness in his eyes and that was all he needed to stick around.
Song Yunhyeong:
Tumblr media
Yunhyeong had always solved life’s problem with a smile on his lips. There wasn’t much that could dampen the light in his heart and the grin on his lips. Even at the age when his peers were still worrying about what present they’d get for Christmas, Yunhyeong already knew what he wanted out of life and where his passion laid. His parents had always been there, always supportive of their’s son decision even if it was as crazy as opening up a cafe in the muggle world for they knew Yunhyeong’s talent was too great to not to share. Their friends, however, didn’t quite share the same sentiment, always thought they were too soft on him. Of all the reputable profession, how could his parents accept such a silly dream. He felt helpless listening to the well disguised derision thrown at his parents not only by their friends but also his grandparents simply because they chose to be supportive. So for the next few years of his life, auror was what he had chosen to be his dream despite the protest of his mom and his dad’s sorrowful gaze. They knew he did it for them, to make them proud but he had failed to realize that it was him that made them happy. So he carried himself as any reputable auror could, serious and even if it meant watching from the sideline as his friend enjoy their days. His days were dark and rigid, wasn’t until a certain sunshine entered his life and reminded him that “Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” He reminded Yunhyeong of the lost dream to travel the worlds, to learn all the recipes his brain could hold, and most importantly, to have fun. Once more, Yunhyeong was abled to breathe easy.

2. Y/n’s Group
Tumblr media
Cr.
Y/n: (If you’re wondering why I left the middle top panel blank, it’s because I truly believe in doing my best to make the story personable for any reader. Yes, some details won’t fit perfectly with everyone but it’s my hope that a big part of it, you’ll be able to see yourself in place of Y/n. I don’t want to fall into the trend of inserting these beautiful Asian models because one, I know for sure not all of you are Asian. And two, not everyone fit the body type and me included. I hope you understand my choice. Thank you.)
Tumblr media
“A muggle born Slytherin”, what a funny joke that must’ve been. Some laughed, other giggled, few grimaces from the oldest bunch at the table donning that beautiful shade of emerald. You hadn’t understand it, a smile on your lips still that they hadn’t tossed you out and deemed you too muggle to do magic. A stiff silent sunk into the large room so beautiful with the constellation twinkling, beautiful warm light from hundreds, thousands floating candle instilled a sense of wonder in your chest. Your smile slowly worn away as the laugh too died away when the magical hat once more spoke with certain, “A muggle born Slytherin, another one for the book.” By the time your body settled into the wooden chair by the group of second years wearing sympathetic smile on their lips, you knew something was wrong. Your first year was spent futilely trying to convince the 7th years, the last fews lingered still from an outdated mindset, that there was more to being a Slytherin than devil worshipping and discrimination. You’ve forgotten how many time you were shoved into the dirt, tripped on your walk to herbology, and how they had so cruelly laughed at your very ironic existent. The magical world that had given you an out from the mundane one your parents had always taught you to dream to escape suddenly darken with hopelessness. Yet when the world seemed to be at its worst, a beautiful young boy showed you that inside each person, there will always be a light and a dark side. Junhoe had lifted you from the bottom of the dark hole you had dug yourself and taught you that just because a person belongs to Slytherin, doesn’t mean their eyes must be blinded by one shade of green. The world exist in a beautiful blend of colors and to be bounded by a single color, a single shade would be disrespectful to your own soul.
Junhoe:
Tumblr media
There’s no one truer than the Koo when it comes to the meaning of living, breathing Slytherin. Perhaps that in itself a contradiction for they stand tall to shield those who suffer injustice, use their wit and cunning brain to play the world to their favor. They’ve managed to stay true to the meaning of the Emerald and silver logo they wore so proudly on their chest without succumbing to the evil of the world. Perhaps that’s why they’ve always been hailed as the royalty, true heir to Slytherin. Needless to say, that title comes with the weight of the world as it was passed down to Junhoe, the eldest boy in the family. He suffered greatly as the old school beliefs often meant he was belittled, jeered for simply being proud of his heritage, being proud of the house he was placed in. The world he lived in perhaps seemingly glamorous to those unaware of what lied behind the closed door of his grand home. Junhoe had always hide behind the sass and sarcasm, use it to hide that behind the cold exterior was just a boy with stars shining in his eyes. He had no friend for his fellow housemate feared him, those from adorning other crests couldn’t wrap their head around everything he stood for. He was lonely in the quest to show there was more to being a Snake than just the stain left behind by the greatest evil that ever was. Lonely until he met you, a walking, breathing paradox being beat down by the world for being proud of who you were - a muggle born Slytherin. Suddenly his world brighten up and for the first time in a long time, he walked down the hallway of the school with a smile on his lips.

Naruto Fic Recs: The Sequel
Since this post seems to be my most popular, and I’ve read  more since making the first one, I figured a follow-up was necessary :) I was a little more picky adding stories in this list, so it’s shorter but guaranteed-to-be-good fics.
Link to Part One here.
Gen/Self-Inserts
To Shape and Change: Minato replaces Naruto. It’s adorable, maybe because I adore Minato lol. But I really enjoyed it! :) Sadly, I do think it’s abandoned, but what’s written is fabulous.
Weight of the World: A fem!Naruto and a self-insert, but I REALLY love how the writer does the character. Also, it has pretty fabulous character development and I guess she could come off as Mary Sue... but she IS Naruto lol. Also, Kakashi has a pretty amazing role in here and I adore it for that. Seems to still be updating (keeping hope out for it anyways lol).
Accidental Companions: Hurt/Comfort. Someone sees Naruto’s life, though he finds it hard to believe before trying to help the poor boy. Starring: Kakashi’s ninken!
Come to the Sand Side (We Have Ramen): This is my favorite story currently. It sucked me in and I read it all in one sitting! Gaara and his siblings are adorable and I love how they handled Naruto slowly falling out of love with Konoha and the Sasuke situation. It was cute and hilarious, with ample angst! <3 Definitely rec, and, bonus, IT’S COMPLETED. And this writer is pretty fabulous too! :D
Phoenix Rising: Features de-aged Sasuke and amazing dad!Naruto! This is utter fluff and over 300k, though I think it’s abandoned. It also has side fics and they’re also rather cute and amazing! Definitely rec giving this a read!
Dancing with Demons: Naruto raised by demons, need I say more? Really amazing world-building and interesting characterization of Naruto. The whole nature vs. nurture thing ;) :D
Time Travel
Chibi Ninja: The whole of Konoha 12 + Sai goes back in time and it’s utterly ridiculous but so cute. Also, I love the reactions to them haha. I read it for the fluff and the cuteness, definitely not a serious fic. Abandoned, sadly.
Making Up For Lost Thyme: Ongoing and features BAMF Naruto and Sasuke and lots of hilarity! It’s SasuNaru, but currently gen beyond them being a cute old and married couple while still twelve lolol. I love this a LOT :D <3
What’s the Worst That Can Happen?: I really love how this writer does Kakashi, just wanted to say that. Anyways, Naruto and Kakashi travel back to Minato’s time and it’s well-written and on-going, so I do adore this fic.
What Once Was Will Never Be: Naruto travels back, claims his Uzumaki heritage, is adorably powerful and oblivious, and basically all my favorite time travel tropes on top of being KakaNaru. Ongoing.
reverse: KakaNaru (of a sort), COMPLETE and LONG, and features Kurama gratuitously stealing chibi!jinchuuriki and causing wars. Really, this is utter fluff and totally amazing, I might just love this more than backslide by this writer, and that’s saying a LOT.
The Yellow Dyad: OHMYGOODNESS. THIS. READ THIS. IF NOTHING ELSE, READ THIS. SOOOO GOOD. MinaNaru and the pairing is just the CUTEST and so PURE and Minato is just the most ADORABLE and Naruto is an utter BAMF and OHMYGOODNESS. READ THIS. Ongoing and very long <3
Forever and a Bit: Ongoing! Naruto and Gaara time travel and they have the most pure friendship ever <3 Features a Sasuke that is peeved that Naruto doesn’t pay him enough attention ;) SasuNaru.
Because Now I know, All My Roads Lead To You: SasuNaru; Sasuke and Naruto time travel. Features pining!Naruto and sexuallyfrustrated!Naruto lol. Oh, they also leave Konoha in a very bad-ass way, imho, and Itachi gets sense knocked into him. Definitely different from other time travels and on-going!
Kako no Kage (Shadows of the Past): Sasuke and Naruto time travel (SasuNaru)! Their relationship is the cutest and it’s on-going!
Mutt: Time Travel, KakaNaru, and it’s just a one-shot but well-written and adorable <3
A Calculated Error: Features unmotivated but overpowered Sasuke and Naruto accidentally finding themselves in the time before the founding of the villages :D Sasuke and Naruto friendship <3
Completely Undone: KakaNaru and this link is to PART ONE of the trilogy. The stories in the series are pretty long and really well-written. I have to admit, there’s some confusing story lines, but it’s pretty good and the third part is still on-going. Totally rec :)
Cross-Overs
Harry Potter
Find Me a White Knight Cloaked in Black: This writer is fabulous. Sadly, I think this is abandoned but there’s still over 50k and it’s so well-written. Harry is a BAMF and doesn’t give a damn about anyone... or so he likes to pretend ;)
Not Troublesome at All: Shikamaru/Harry; Shikamaru saves a Harry that crashes through the Mirror of Erised into Konoha. Sadly, abandoned, but still pretty close to finished to deserve a read!
Sneaking Around Konoha: Kakashi/Harry. Over 99k and really well-done! Harry and Teddy move to Konoha for a peaceful existence... but we all know that just isn’t possible for Harry ;)
Ink Deep: Complete and so cute! Neji/Harry. Really just love this. Features tattooartist!Harry
Slash
Rare Pairings
All Started With a Smell: ShikaFemNaru. I know this is under the slash section, but, you gotta read it and see, and I read it for the pairing cause I really love ShikaNaru and there’s not enough long fics for this pairing! I guess for those who might be picky, this is more het than slash, but I put it here cause of the  pairing.
Soulmate Story Collection: All the rare pairings and just amazing deliverance on each prompt. Really amazingly well-written and I rec the other works by this writer too! :)
To Calmer Waters: Shino/Naruto; cute and it’s very much an AU, but their relationship is the cutest thing. Really love it, it’s a friends-to-lovers type and pretty fluffy and Naruto develops really well.
monogatari: Gaara takes a leave of absence from being Kazekage and is surprised when Naruto follows him to his hide-out. One-shot. (Btw, why is GaaNaru a rare pairing? WHY AREN’T THERE ENOUGH OF THIS PAIRING? Or have I not been looking in the right places??)
As is the Sea Marvelous: MadaTobi; I really love this pairing and there’s not enough fics for my fix. It’s blackkat who wrote this, so you know it’s going to be good and it IS.
KakaNaru
With Nothing on My Tongue: There is hardly enough for this pairing, but this is on-going and features smart!Naruto! Slow burn as well!
Prince of Konoha: Can I just say that I adore this one-shot? It has a different power dynamic and I think it’s slightly co-dependent, but definitely interesting and I’m hoping there’s more to this AU! Features a Naruto who was raised to become Hokage by the Sandaime
SasuNaruSasu
Ramen With a Smile: Utterly cute one-shot. Just give it a read, you won’t regret it :D
Flesh and Bone: I love arranged marriages and the fact that it’s SasuNaru? Love this writer btw. Long one-shot.
Cohabitation: I don’t know what it is about this one-shot, but I keep rereading it and cracking up every time. You should totally read it, if only for the laughs haha.
Deception: This writer writes SasuNaru so well <3 I love this Modern!AU and definitely adore the way their relationship comes about! Completed!
Corporate Secrets: A/B/O SasuNaru, modern!AU... I already know you want to read it just by that, bonus: completed.
Predators: So.... this is a dark!Naruto and kind of a dystopian!AU. It’s tagged and has lots of warnings, but definitely worth the read. Not much fluff, but well-written and I enjoyed it! Completed.
When Love Fades: I really love the getting back together trope, and this is angsty, for sure, but it’s well-written and Sasuke and Naruto both develop and grow. Should totally read. Bonus: completed.
Give Us Our Daily Ramen: This is my favorite and it’s hilarious <3 You should totally read this. Features: Naruto’s friendships and his business are the highlight of this fic. Completed!
So, I have a lot of SasuNaru bookmarks on my ao3, so I’m just going to link my Naruto bookmarks and you can search the relationships for SasuNaru... or anything else haha. You can find them all here lol.
You can find my Harry Potter fic rec list here, if you’re in that fandom :)

Ranking My Jarchie Fanfiction
I’ve been in the Riverdale fandom for a long time so I’m going to start this off by stating that in the very beginning, the main ships were Beronica and Jarchie. Crazy right? Bughead wasn’t really a thing. Now, there are barely any Jarchie scenes in the show but I still write Jarchie fanfiction on wattpad here.
I love writing reviews and just writing period and after re-reading my fanfiction for the first time in months, I’ve decided to write a brutally honest review. So let’s begin.
Tumblr media
5. Meadow Of Flowers
Tumblr media
For some reason, this is one of my most popular fics. Though it always seems that way right? The things you write that you’re most proud of never get the recognition you think it deserves, but the things that have been slapped together hastily seem to do very well. A. K. A the fanfiction writer’s curse.
Here are the good things: the idea and the plot started off great. It’s a cute, clear concept. It’s not complex or hard to comprehend. The prep draws flowers on the goths notebook, the goth surprises the prep by drawing more flowers, and the prep tries to get to know him so he creates a tumblr and messages him anonymously. The text messages sent between the two are funny. It’s a good laugh, something to snicker at when you’re bored and have free time. The characters are really interesting. Archie has an infectious attitude and watching Jughead try to deal with it is equally as entertaining.
Here are the bad things. The plot loses itself somewhere in the middle. All of a sudden Jughead has an ex girlfriend that comes back in town and his father is the leader of the Mafia or some while crazy crap like that. There becomes too many irrelevant characters. None of the rest of book actually has to do with the main concept, the meadow of flowers drawn on a piece of paper that brought them together. I really don’t know how that concept got so lost. But even still, it garners up tons of reads. For what reason? Probably because of the text messages. Archie’s dirty pick up lines and Jughead’s insertion of memes are probably the only thing that keeps readers coming back.
The writing also extremely lacks. It’s a dialogue based book. There’s not much substance there. It’s literally all quotes. Definitely not my best work. I’d say it’s my worst. I cringe when people tell me they love it so much.
I haven’t updated the book in months and honestly I don’t think I’ve ever going to. If anything, I’ll delete all of the wild chapters and keep the text messages. This fic is the definition of the cringe side of Wattpad and I promise you my other fics are nothing like this trainwreck.
4. Treehouse
Tumblr media
Treehouse is my only ongoing fanfiction. It’s probably going to be my last Jarchie fanfic. I’m not sure if it’s my last fanfic on Wattpad though. I’ll have to see. I’m kind of over the Riverdale fandom and the show if I’m being completely honest.
Jughead and Archie spend a summer in the latter’s treehouse getting to know each other, but once they get back to school the story gets twisted into a lot of dirty rumors. Jughead wants to forget what happened, but Archie wants to further their relationship.
Good things: Characterization. Jughead is fem! In this book. He’s bubbly, innocent, and an all around strong character. He’s an activist, a vegan and a super inspiring person. He’s extremely lovable. It’s easy to support and fall in love with his character. I wrote Jelly Bean, his sister, older in this book. She’s also a dynamic character. She has her own issues as well. The book doesn’t just focus on Jarchie, it focuses on Jelly Bean’s problems, Archie’s problems, Betty’s problems, and my OCs problems individually. Their lives all intertwine and that’s another aspect that makes the book great. The writing is good and the storylines are relatable.
Bad things: Because there are so many storylines, the book drags. I’m often left to wonder what the actual plot is. There’s no climax or end goal. It’s more like a look of the lives into each person, which isn’t a bad thing, but it causes the story to feel slow and sometimes meaningless. There are currently 19 chapters written and published, but it feels as if there’s much less because nothing has been accomplished and nothing has been destroyed yet.
Despite that, I do think it’s an entertaining read and in terms of writing, I think it’s easy to follow and easy to love.
3. Circumlocution
Tumblr media
My readers like to call this book Hell.
I am usually a fluffy fic writer. My books do tend to have angst, problems that need to be solved that eventually work out, but this is not one of those books.
Jughead and Archie dated in high school until Archie left one day out of the blue. Jughead never got a call, never got an explanation, but was instead left to deal with his miserable life without one of the people who made it bearable. Archie comes back to Riverdale a year later, finds Jughead at a bar, and offers to take him home on a long, awkward, emotional car ride into the unknown.
Good things: the plot is amazing. There’s very few settings, the most used one being the car, so it’s easy to follow. It’s structured, the chapters flashback to a couple of years ago so the reader can piece together what happened to Jughead while Archie was gone and what happened to Archie after he left. The flashbacks give a glance to both sides of the story as the characters stay clueless to the whole truth until the very end. It’s my shortest, most consist fic, numbering in at 25 chapters and a heartfelt epilogue. The writing was done very well, every emotion is felt. The anxiousness, the tension, the hatred, and the hint of affection they both still had toward each other are displayed well. There are subtle clues dropped to allow the reader to guess what happened, and little details start to make sense at the very end.
Bad things: even with that “glowing review” there are some shortcomings I think. I’m also very picky about my own work by the way, so in reality these fics may not be as bad as I’m making them out to be.
Because there’s very few settings, I think sometimes the setting does get lost. I think the car could be described more. I think the mentions of the road could be used. Maybe I’m fussing, but there’s lots of times where there’s just conversation and the reader assumes that it’s in Archie’s truck because that’s where they last were. Still, I think there should be reminders instead of just still dialogue. For instance, how much moving around can you do in a car? The only other locations are pit stops to get food. The rest of the locations are in the flashbacks, which don’t really play a huge part to the story itself.
I also think that maybe the book is too dark at times. One thing that I hate about wattpad, is the number of dark fanfics written by 12 year olds who romanticize topics like depression and self harm. I didn’t romanticize the topics, but they’re there and I tried to be respectful and treat them with the seriousness that needed to be there. There’s physical abuse, substance abuse, self harm, it’s a lot. It’s why my readers call the book hell, because it’s a lot of emotions at once, especially when you grow so attached to two characters and grow to vouch for their relationship to work out in the end.
My favorite part of the fic is the epilogue because it shows someone reaching out, getting help, and trying to get better. Its the right approach.
My book is also called hell because of the ending... but I’m not going to spoil that for you.
I just think that the mood in the fic could be lighter in some aspects. There needs to be more breaks for happy flashbacks, or more light hearted conversation. Sometimes I feel as if the transitions are too quick. Jughead could go from yelling at Archie to slowly easing up when they reminisce about the past, but I think the shift should be more gradual. Still, in terms of plot/structure/and writing, it’s my best fic. Hands down. So why is it at number 3? Let’s see.
2. Nameless
Maybe this is where my bias steps in.
In reality, this would be tied with my number 1 choice because this is one of my favorites, though I don’t think it’s technically better than circumlocution in terms of plot. This is another book that drags on for longer than it’s supposed to.
Nameless didn’t have a name. He was 17 Years Old. He didn’t talk to anybody but his social worker. He didn’t show emotion. He spent his days reading and coming up with names until one felt right, for the boy had amnesia after a terrible accident that separated him from his parents and his old life. Archie comes around, and soon he learns to stop viewing with the world with indifference and hanging onto the past.
Good things: Characterization yet again. I’m very good at characterization. Although the Riverdale characters are not mine, I’m very good at giving them their own unique personalities to fit my plots and ideas. Nameless is obviously Jughead, but his character is so complex. My favorite thing is watching him grow as a person throughout the book. He seriously learns how to love, how to deal with people, and how to accept himself and what he has. Watching his relationship grow with his adoptive parents and his adoptive siblings is just as amazing as watching his relationship grow with Archie. I think that the writing is done well, though there is some things left unanswered in the end that I ended up explaining in my final author’s note. The plot is consistent as well.
Bad things: Like I mentioned earlier, I do think it drags on. Some scenes are definitely unnecessary and there’s some chapters that can be scraped out. There’s no reason for why there needed to be 60 chapters.
As a fanfic writer though, I think it’s safe to say that most of the time fics are filled with a lot of irrelevant chapters for fluff. They’re fillers, sure, but most people read for the fluffy scenes of a relationship. Chapters like that are also important for live updating a book. Sometimes it’s just easier to throw in a filler to give readers what they want in order to work on plot centered chapters. It’s something I’m conditioned to, but something that isn’t really a pro when writing a real book, which is something I want to do. Maybe I’m giving myself too much crap for this, but eh it’s definitely something that needs fixing.
Another thing that needs work would probably be my tendency to introduce characters and forget about them. One of my original characters, Jay, was a big part in the middle of the book, but then he slowly faded away and wasn’t brought up again until the epilogue.
1. Aberration
Here it is. My first Jarchie fanfic. My pride in joy. Look at the love this fic has been shown? My goodness. 116k. It’s probably my greatest accomplishment. This is my favorite fic and guess what?
It’s total bias.
But let me get into why this is good first. (Jughead being asexual is the best part)
This book is a coming of age story. It’s probably my only fanfic that takes place in the actual Riverdale Universe. All of my other fics are AU’s with the only connection to Riverdale being their names. It starts with Jughead and Archie at 4 years of age and goes up to age 27 with an epilogue at age 33. That being said, I can’t give you a specific plot summary because sooooo many problems arise and so many problems are solved throughout the years. It’s a glimpse of their life, and it’s beautiful.
Good things: sticking to canon. (In the beginning at least) Jughead is just as lost, confused, and edgy as he was in season one. (I say season one because Jughead in season 2 felt like a whole different character and I feel like the writers kind of ruined him. There’s such thing as character development but I think they went overboard. Anyways, that’s a different story.)
Their childhood is written as I envisioned it. There’s canon conversations, like Archie’s proposal to Betty when they were kids. It’s sweet.
Besides sticking to canon, I do a good job of sticking to parallels since there’s such a wide range of events and incidents going on. I think it shows continuity in the characters from when they were 10 to when they were 20.
Not only that, but the plot is just all around entertaining. There’s always something to aww at, something to get mad at, something to laugh at, something to cry at. It’s emotional, watching them grow up and go through all sorts of things. The problems that arise are real coming of age problems. People lose friends, make new ones, go through identity crisis, deal with loss, deal with stress, deal with home issues. It’s all there and very real. It’s raw. I love that. The character development is also amazing. Watching little kids turn into strong men and women is really interesting and fun to watch.
My favorite part is that Jughead is ASEXUAL.
I did so much research. When I found out that Jughead was supposed to be asexual in the show, I took my chance and ran with it. I did my best to represent the asexual community in this book. It’s what makes it so unique. It’s why this is my favorite. I get lots of dms about how this helped people figure out how they identify or get trough what they were feeling. I’ve put resources to the AVEN website, a safe community for asexuals. I did my best and I love the product. I love that I’ve helped people. This really is why this is my number one. Besides that representation, Kevin Keller is gay, Archie is bisexual, Liliana (my og character) is Hispanic, and my other og character, Aaron, is African American. Everyone loves my OCs in the book, especially Jackson. Representation to me is soooooo important. It’s one thing that I really nailed.
Another thing that I love about this book is that my development as a writer is so obvious. As the chapters go on, I get better and better. I start to fall into a style, and it’s so enjoyable to see that reading it again. The chapters get more descriptive, the grammar starts to improve, and the plot starts to get more complex.
However, in terms of technical aspects, it’s probably one of my worst written fics in the beginning. Still not as bad as Meadow of Flowers, but close.
Bad things: First of all, it’s written in present tense. That’s not totally against writing rules, but it’s unconventional and it’s more common for stories to be told in past tense. Again, I didn’t really know what I was doing. It was my first time writing in third person. It was my first time taking a crack at storytelling in years.
The grammar is awful. Because it’s in present tense, my tenses and verbs are sort of messed up at times. It feels awkward. And if it’s not that, it’s the fact that I for some reason can’t spell for my life. It makes for some very embarrassing typos like “he pressed a quick piss to his forehead.” I also didn’t know that whines and wines were two very different things.
...
I used wines as a verb for most of the book. If I was writing in past tense, I probably would’ve caught onto that mistake 100 chapters ago.
That’s another thing, the book is actually 100 chapters long. Despite that though, it doesn’t really drag like the other books do because there’s a new problem that comes along with every age. There’s not many dead spots, but some people do lose interest in it after the two graduate high school which is around chapter 60 I want to say? There’s a table of contents in the beginning that separates the chapters by what grade of school they’re in and by age. It’s convenient. You’ll need it if you don’t feel like sitting through elementary school Jarchie. Or maybe you don’t like college Jarchie and you want to skip to adult Jarchie. I’m telling you, it’s convenient.
But back to the grammar thing, I didn’t know that most quotes didn’t end with periods at the time, and that’s a huge problem that doesn’t get corrected until maybe my fourth book. All the dialogue had periods at the end instead of commas. For instance:
“But you said I could,” Jughead whined.
^That’s correct.
However, this is what I did:
“But you said I could.” Jughead wines.
^That basically sums up how bad the grammar is throughout.
Though technically imperfect, it’s definitely still a good read. The plot is amazing. 116k reads should tell you that it’s worth the read if you can get past those mistakes. Although I’m being hard on myself about it now, no one really noticed it. If they did, they never called me out on it. Honestly, writing on Wattpad has low expectations so just separating paragraphs correctly boosts your writing into the good category. Honestly that’s my biggest pet peeve. I used to do it too, but I can’t read a book that has huge paragraphs of dialogue without a separation between which character is saying what. It gives me headaches.
There’s tons of mistakes in this book, trust me. However, I think I’m going to leave the mistakes there. I want to look back on it, pisses instead of kisses on foreheads and all.
Anyways, I spent a good few hours writing this review and I doubt most people are going to read this but it’s going on my blog because it’s an honest evaluation.

Honorable Mention
That sixth book you see in the first image? The one with the flowers on the cover? It’s called Alphabet Jarchie and it’s my ongoing one shot book. I take a word from every letter of the alphabet and write a one shot about it. Obviously I can’t really rank it with my fics, but the one shots are helping me cut to the chase in my writing, and I think my ideas are pretty good. So if you don’t feel like sitting through my longggggg fanfics (though they are pretty enticing but this is me being harsh) you can check out my one shots.
This was fun.

I just recently got into the comic community like I read some comics because I really enjoyed the Batman games and the animated series and Jason is the character that intrigued me the most but recently I see more and more people complaining about the new comics on how they don’t portray Jason and Batman the right way and similar stuff. Has it always been like this? I see major backlash at “new” comic writers and just wanted to ask which comic writers managed to portray them right?
Thank you for your ask! This answer might be a little long, but please, bear with me, I’ll try to explain my train of thoughts as best I can.
Since most comic characters have existed for multiple decades their portrayal depends on the time they’re in (the gold-, silver-, bronze- and modern age) and  the writer. In addition, the readers interpret stories differently.
So take Batman for example. Created in the 30s, Batman is a lot different now than when he was first introduced. Since he’s existed for such a long time, I personally don’t think there’s any right or wrong way to write Batman or characters like him because of 50+ year long history and the fact that he’s changed so many times. In some stories he’s very strict about his no killing rule (modern series), while he kills in some other stories (Dark Knight Returns). In the beginning of his creation in the 30s he used guns which has now changed into a no-guns policy.
I don’t know if people has always complained about comics, but I think it’s more apparent now than ever due to social media and the overwhelming and awful trend of being negative and nit-picky about everything. I was hesitant for a long time to get into comics because I kept reading comments about how “shitty” comics are and “comics are the fucking worst” and “this is a mess and here’s why” etc, which isn’t something I found to be correct at all. I enjoy 9/10 comics I read, I’m having a blast immersing myself in gorgeous art and witty and wonderful writing.
Some fans have a very personal connection to a character and believes a character can only be portrayed in one “correct” way/most enjoyable way, and every portrayal of a character not coinciding with their preferred version is “wrong”/not enjoyable at all. There’s nothing wrong with wanting a character to be a certain way, but I don’t believe there’s a right or wrong answer on how to portray a character.
This also comes down to the writer and the story itself. Is it main continuity or a limited series that won’t affect main timeline at all? If it’s not main continuity (Elseworlds in DC) that gives more room for changes in character as it won’t be part of a larger, ongoing story. Elseworlds can make heroic characters be the villains and villains be the heroes, and it won’t affect the main story.
If it’s main continuity, there are the issues of stories being connected and having consistent portrayal of a character so that everything runs smoothly. Since DC has so many ongoing series at once written by different writers, each with their own personal experience and interpretations of characters that bleeds into their stories, it’s very easy for Batman to be written one way by writer #1 in series A but written completely different by writer #2 in series B while series A and B run at the same time. This often creates inconsistencies with characterization that many has a problem with.
As for which writers manages to portray a character like Batman “right” is difficult question to answer, for multiple reasons:
1. I’m not very knowledgeable on Batman or Batman writers
2. It depends on what you consider to be a «right» portrayal
3. If you want writers who has been more commercially successful and made more popular/classic stories, I think you should find some reading recommendations made by people who are far more knowledgeable than me.
(I have a list compiled by multiple recs lists, don’t hesitate to tell me if you want me to share what I’ve found or any of my personal recs).
As for Jason, it’s a tad more complicated due to his more complicated (and short) history.
Ultimately, it comes down to your own opinion and no one else’s, what you think of writing and characters. What some people consider to be a “bad” way of portraying a character might be your favourite interpretation and vice versa.
Sorry for this being a bit long. I hope I answered your questions, and have fun reading!
