Chance's Return to Dreamland

You wouldn't BELIEVE how happy I was to see this rip get requested man!! Chance's Return to Dreamland isn't part of the surprisingly many Season 1 rips to have exploded in popularity - think My Dr. Eggman Can't Be This Evil!, Dr. Soulja, Pikmin Park, you get the picture - but its a rip I've had sitting proudly in my playlists for years and a verified banger. And to see that I'm not the only one who knows it exists!!! That warmed my heart for some reason. Fuck yeah.

There's a lot of parallels you can draw between this rip and Door into a Hundred Summers, another one of my Season 1 favorites. Of course there's the obvious one - both are rap mashups utilizing rap music that isn't really commonly featured on the channel, with Chance's Return to Dreamland to date still being the only rip on the channel to use Chance the Rapper's Angels. But beyond that, they have a really similar, enchanting way of grabbing your attention - you click on the rip waiting for the mashup to start, only for the music to dramatically cut away before the song used in the mashup "introduces" it back, at a lower pitch. I'm certain this way of starting a mashup has been used in more than these two rips, yet its a huge part of what's kept them stuck in my mind for so long - it reminds me of Be Cool, Be Wild, and Be My Girl in how, even as early as Season 1 they were finding ways to subvert what you were expecting a SiIvaGunner rip to be by cutting the playback so abruptly rather than having the mashup or melody swap simply start playing more subtly.

But the real reason I associate the two rips with one another so closely, and perhaps the real reason they both employ the aforementioned technique of pausing the track used, is what they do with said track in the mashup - pitching it down to create a quite different experience. This is more exaggerated in Door into a Hundred Summers of course, which takes a tune otherwise radiating the energy of a crisp spring morning and gives it a far more reflective, slow, nostalgic feel. What's done in Chance's Return to Dreamland feels almost like the complete inverse - the tune of Kirby's Return to Dreamland's title screen theme is infectiously jolly, and the slight pitch-down is primarily just done to allow it to play harmoniously alongside Angels, a song already infectiously feel-good in its own right. The two thus compliment each other beautifully, sort of similarly to something like World Out There, where the two sources used in isolation already feel harmonious in emotional intent, yet elevate each other to new heights in the mashup.

It's just a damn good rip, yknow? Chance the Rapper is (perhaps unsurprisingly) not an artist I've listened to much at all, yet his and featured artist Saba's vocals in Angels are just filled with such sincerely feel-good whimsy, such sheer joy and happiness in being alive, a feel that Kirby has ALWAYS been top-tier at pushing - the experience of listening to Chance's Return to Dreamland feels like like frolicking in endlessly warm, sunny grassy fields with those you cherish. A pill of pure happiness of shocking quality and attention to detail for a rip made so early on in Season 1's life. And knowing that digboye is still around today, 8 years later, helping bring rips like the immaculate One-Winged DJ to life, just puts a big dumb smile on my face.

Name one idea for a plot you’ve had but never gotten around to writing.

                 this question is a bit hard to answer because i have so many plot ideas that i haven't gotten to write. not because i haven't wanted to but because they've fallen through due to the other person deleting, going inactive without telling me, dropping the thread without warning or just straight up disappearing. i did recently start working on potential arcs for my mashup timeline but i put those aside for the time being since i'm still unsure how i feel about this blog. or if i even want to put all of that time and effort into creating them only for like 2 people other than myself to care, ya know? anyway, the list of unwritten plots is rather long if i'm being honest but if i were to pick the number one plot idea out of that long list it would be fixing brub/aker's 2012 win/ter sol/dier run. i have been yelling about wanting to fix how the ending of that run left natasha and bu/cky's relationship ( mainly how it left natasha tbfh ) since 2021. but i'd wanted to fix it way before then whenever it was that i read it, maybe like 6/7 years ago because my buck.ynat shipper heart could not take that lame ass ending. in 2021 jess gifted me with sf/am which resulted in some top tier post wid/ow hunt natasha content and just amazing natasha content in general, so it once again reignited my need for that plotline.

                 i have chatted about the idea and how i would have changed it with a few muns over the years but it really isn't the same as being able to write a long term thread with someone. and i got tired of waiting and of ideas never coming to fruit so a few months ago i decided to start writing the idea myself and wrote a drabble. while i could have written it as a natasha + bucky thing i felt like doing so would have made it seem like i force ship it on this blog when that isn't the case. ( if i'm being 100% honest, i think there's a part of me that still has hope for a long term thread with a bucky--- very delulu of me, i know ) think that by using an entirely different character like phil, it not only gives me the ability to potentially write a m/f ship whenever i want ( find a m/f ship on here has been so hard for some reason. i had one but they don't seem active anymore. ) but also allows me as the writer to explore how a select few see her during this challenging and confusing time in her life. also, if i ever were to write something in this plot line, it would be from her perspective of course, but then having the drabbles be from someone else's perspective would be an interesting change in pov regarding the same topic.

29. what do you look for in a song or artist?

a big question with many answers. There are LOTS of things I look for in songs or artists not always in the same way or at the same time. I'm always conceptualising music as something that fulfills a sensory need, in the same way that food fulfills hunger and sleep fulfills tiredness, and that need is different at different times. Sometimes you want a big meal sometimes you want a light sweet snack and it's the same with music for me. I like the way different kinds of music can take you to a different world and make you feel so different, but can also match how you feel inside so surprisingly well, and either bring comfort to that feeling or entrench you in it even deeper. Sometimes I want bleeps and bloops to imagine myself as a funky robot. Sometimes I want dense shoegaze that sounds like a thick layer of raincloud because it hasn't rained in a couple weeks and I miss the rain. Sometimes I wanna get silly w it and dance to mid 2000s pop bangers. Sometimes I wanna sit and brood to goth music. Sometimes I want a 17 minute prog rock song to take me on a journey. Sometimes I wanna listen to jazz fusion and pretend im sweating my ass off in a tiny apartment in 70s NYC. Sometimes I wanna play weird YouTube mashups on repeat because they scratch my brain. For example. You get the point. I don't think too much about "good" music or "bad" music. If it fulfills a need in my brain, then that's good enough for me

Hello! I was wondering if you watched 5B yet and what are your thoughts on it. I always enjoy seeing your opinion on Lucifer plot.

So here's your answer a month late, anon, and I really hope you see this. I'm probably due for a rewatch but oh well! Let's see...

I liked it. I liked it a lot. There were flashes that called back to the sharp, dry humour of the first season that was what made me fall in love with the show.

I didn't dislike the musical episode as much as I thought I would (with the exception of the first song) - they made some really good song choices and the mashup was superb.

Dennis Haysbert as God was top tier and pretty much fit my image of what an all powerful divine being would be after billions of years. It suited the universe of the show. I found myself comparing and contrasting with my belief of God in reality, which is a very good thing. Though the joke about Jesús is a bit of a rabbit hole. **SPECULATION AHOY**

HERE is a link to an excellent thread about how Lucifer's mythos won't touch Jesus with a ten foot pole. It brings up how Lucifer going to Hell and showing Mr. Said-Out-Bitch the path to Heaven mirrors the Catholic belief in the Harrowing of Hell, wherein Jesus, during the three days he was dead, went to Hell and released all the "good pagans" who had been relegated there since they'd died before his birth. (Note: this is an oversimplification, I am Christian but not Catholic.) The thread also correctly points out that the existence of Jesus would make the worldbuilding in the show fall apart, what with the (sometimes wildly contradictory) characterization of Hell: "there is no structural need for a saviour in the show's cosmology."

It got me to wondering if the reason they've avoided Jesus so completely (not even a random reference to a stepbrother etc) is because they're setting up Lucifer to fill that role.

Now, this may not be news to anyone else, but it certainly was for me once I started considering the implications. Aside from the Harrowing of Hell example earlier, there's also the fact that they chose to make Lucifer God's son, and explicitly have the Celestials refer to each other with familial ties, rather than having the angels just be additional creations of God. Lucifer also has a connection with fire, being the Lightbringer (flaming sword): in the Bible, the Holy Spirit is usually represented as tongues of flame. And of course, Lucifer did literally become God at the end of the season.

So here we have the whole Trinity represented: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Just as Jesus being part of the Trinity means he is also a part of the whole, so too does Lucifer now have all three represented within himself. (Note, I may be a Christian but I'm not a theologian. The nature of the Trinity is one of the deepest mysteries of Christianity and the exact definition has been argued for centuries, you're only going to find my own interpretation of it here on tumblr dot com.)

What to do with this information? I don't know. I just find it very interesting.

Now that detour is out of the way, other things! I thought the episode with Dan was a lot of fun. Structurally I know they wanted to give the character a last chance to shine before he was taken away but I also found it very interesting, once the twist at the end was revealed, that the entire time I thought it was God fucking with Dan and it turned out to be Lucifer. Already without the omnipotent powers of the Almighty Lucifer is controlling and manipulating everything with absolute precision. "God complex" indeed.

Some things that made me head tilt: Chloe was much closer to her original character than she has been in what feels like forever, making smart choices, taking no shit, and spending lots of time with Trixie. I loved how she was able to work WITH what she now knows of Lucifer instead of constantly trying to fight against it. ...Except when she didn't, in order to drive the plot.

When Lucifer told her he thought himself incapable of love I kept waiting, and waiting, for Chloe to point back to the latter half of s4 (to say nothing of the previous seasons) and say "then what do you call that??" but she never did. I understand her need to hear the words and think that's perfectly in character, but it is also in character for her to follow the evidence and challenge Lucifer when he goes off the rails. I know later on she says that she doesn't believe he's right, but they never talk about it, and that's also not in character, especially for this season. It just felt like they were throwing up ANOTHER pointless roadblock, especially since it gets resolved (sort of) a few episodes later. (To be clear, Lucifer coming to the conclusion that he's incapable of love after inferring it from his Dad is perfectly in character, but it's ALSO in character for Chloe to help him through it, because she knows him so well, instead of just accepting it.)

I also wish we’d gotten a bit more of a chance to unpack when Lucifer LOSES IT over the threat to his Dad, I thought that would be something that would hit him like a ton of bricks afterwards but it was never examined and I feel like that was a missed opportunity.

I liked Chloe quitting the LAPD, I always thought that would end up happening, though I disliked how she pulled a Lucifer about it and did it without communicating. I also don't like how it was framed as "I'm giving up my dream for my boyfriend" and not "I want to support my boyfriend and ALSO the police force is, like, hella corrupt and I don't want to be associated with them any more." I always thought they'd do better as private investigators anyway. I'll be interested to see their dynamic in season 6 without the structure of the LAPD.

The finale was really fun and I loved our first look at Heaven, but it frustrated me that the whole resolution hinged on Lucifer's (or I guess Lilith's) ring. When Chloe convinced Lucifer that she was going to fight no matter what, I was waiting for him to insist that she take the ring, which he never did, of course, because it would ruin the grand confession. (And it was! It was a great scene! I just don't believe that Lucifer wouldn't take every practical step to ensure Chloe's safety). Even if it fell off or something in the battle so you could still have events progress the same way.

Aside from that, the season hit most of the right emotional notes for me (Dan's death was brutal, what a sendoff for the character! Though that being said, I'm surprised that once Chloe found out Dan was in Hell she didn't immediately demand that Lucifer go and get him. In fact I'm surprised that Lucifer didn't just do it, unasked. I imagine once it was explained to Chloe that it would require the nonconsensual use of a dead body that would sour her on the idea, but Lucifer clearly has no such qualms. I'm sure we'll get more of that in season 6 though.)

I'm looking forward to the final season. I'm kind of ready for closure, to see where all of this has been leading, and be able to assess the story as a whole. I'm pretty sure it isn't going to end the way I'd like, but that's fine, it just gives me more to play with in my series.

5) Blame It On The Alcohol - listen. this episode has a lot of problems. not a huge fan of kurt being defensively biphobic (although it’s not a deal breaker for me - a lot of people REALLY hate that scene and it ruined kurt for them which i can sort of understand but i don’t think it was a huge deal) and. god i kinda hate will’s plot line in this episode LMFAO. the voicemail always makes me die a little bit. HOWEVER - this episode is FUNNY AS HELL. ‘why don’t you crack open a fourloko, count boozy von drunk a ton’ is always a one hit KO for me. sue pushing the aural intensity coach down the stairs is so fucking funny. this episode is honestly mid tier at best, but idk. i think it’s funny and i love seeing kurt pine and the music was super fun and this episode just makes me smile (and i love beiste being there for will!!! i wish beiste would’ve been will’s best person at his wedding instead of finn tbh 👀)

4) The Power of Madonna - this episode is so good!!! i feel like some of the more musical themed episodes fall a little flat on plot, but i adore the plot of this one. and there are some super iconic lines from this one (my growing feminism will slice you in half like a righteous blade of equality! mercedes is black, i’m gay - we make culture). and jesse st james???? like admittedly sometimes he gets on my nerves but he’s actually so genuine in this episode, it’s clear he actually cares about rachel by this point. “come out so we can talk. or at least sing about it.” like yes he’s also a dramatic theatre nerd but that’s always how rachel gets her feelings out so offering to sing about it (i think, at least) is so sweet. also i mean. it’s MADONNA. the music is PHENOMENAL. listening to 4 Minutes genuinely makes me feel like the gina linetti headphones meme. express yourself is so fun and cute. THE VOGUE RECREATION IS SO GOOD AND ICONIC. definitely a comfort episode for me

3) New New York - this episode is a favorite partially because the first time i saw it, i was hanging out with an old friend of mine and while i don’t talk to her at all anymore, whenever i watch this episode i remember being in her room and petting her cat and it was a very good time! but also this is just such a solid episode top to bottom. we see rachel enter queen diva mode yet again, but this time it’s artie who helps her wake up from it which i think was smart and helped make the NYC friend circle feel a little bit more cohesive. also the klaine content! the blam content! the kelliott content! glitter rock vampire!!!!! mercedes showing up at the end!! what’s not to love

2) Never Been Kissed - listen i’m aware i’m a klaine stan first and foremost but that’s actually not the main reason why this is ranked so high. genuinely, it’s the music. this is the ONLY boys vs girls mashup episode where i feel like both teams fucking KILLED IT. every time i watch this episode, i change who i think won. and i know a lot of people hate the original ‘teenage dream’ because yes it is kind of overproduced and it is annoying when the music shows blaine singing two lines at the same time. however - i do not care, that song is so fucking good imo. i really hate the acoustic version in s4 just because it sounds so sad, the context really makes it hard for me to listen to. but blaine singing teenage dream the first time him and kurt meet………poetic cinema!!! i hate the beiste plot point because a. it’s just kind of uncomfortable but b. beiste always deserved better!!!! sometimes i forget that the main plot point IS everyone thinking about beiste because genuinely the music is the main highlight of the ep and i try not to think about how disrespectful that was to one of my fav mckinley faculty members ever

1) Original Song - this will never not be my favorite episode. this episode has EVERYTHING. it’s funny, it’s sad, it’s romantic, it’s awkward, this episode is honestly peak glee to me. season two is probably my favorite season because of that, i feel like the whole season did a very good job of staying in its lane and i love that. i love the sadness of pavarotti dying and santana feeling rejected by brittany, to the absolute hilarity of ‘only child’ and ‘trouty mouth’. i love how this episode flat out has quinn saying “rachel deserved better than to live in lima being stuck by finns side, i’ll take that bullet for her so she can go be a star.” and honestly “get it right” is one of my favorite glee songs ever. when rachel sings “so finally someone will see/how much i care” i literally get goosebumps every single fucking time. also i love how “loser like me” was more of a love song to kurt than it was a ‘fuck you’ to sue? like “i’ll get you back when i’m your boss” i headcanon was written by puck because he always admired how kurt knew he was destined for greater things than being tossed into dumpsters. the girls are wearing doc martens which kurt wears all the time!!! can you imagine the ND girls going thrifting to try and find shoes so they can support their bestie from the stage 🥺🥺 and that’s why kurt is the first person to jump to his feet and dance along!!! they’re all besties!!!! like deadass klaine getting together isn’t even a top three moment from this episode for me, which should tell you a lot considering how much i love those two. also MCR gets mentioned a bunch??? like i have never listened to their cover of ‘sing’ in its entirety because it kills me inside - i genuinely love my chemical romance a lot. so whenever they get mentioned i always kind of giggle about it lmfao

Self-Titled: Should’ve Said No (Do y’all remember her performance where she has on a tearaway sweatsuit with a dress underneath? Yeah. I think about that sometimes.)

Fearless: You Belong With Me (It was a single for a reason. It’s literally iconic and catchy as hell.)

Speak Now: ENCHANTED (Any other answer is simply false. This is also Taylor’s best album. I will not be taking any criticism because I’m right.)

Red: I Knew You Were Trouble (Again, it was a single for a reason. The last chorus?? The adlibs with the YEAH-EHH-EHHH YEEEAHH-YEEEAAHH YEAH-YEAH live in my head rent free. Knew it right then! Knew it right then!)

1989: Blank Space (Listen, I feel like an idiot choosing a bunch of singles as the top track, but like I said, they’re singles for a reason. Blank Space was the blueprint for Reputation with how Taylor twisted the narrative so I will not allow any slander. Also the lyrics set the scene, the music video was ICONIC, and I love how her voice sounds in the song.)

Reputation: I Did Something Bad (I am correct. The singles from Reputation were some of her worst, sorry. Ready For It, Endgame, and LWYMMD were not the move and I will not apologize for saying it. Obviously lwymmd had to be the lead single, but it still isn’t a top tier track. Anyway, the mashup with this and no body, no crime is a fucking banger. I also just want to smash an expensive vase whenever I hear this song or like hit a big red button on the beat drop like Lil Nas X does in the Industry Baby music video.)

Lover: Idk (I know the obvious answers are Cruel Summer, Cornelia Street, & London Boy. I honestly haven’t listened to any of the songs on this album in their entirety. Paper rings is cute but like most of the songs on Lover, it’s more childish & whimsical. That vibe doesn’t always suit Taylor imo. Speak Now is whimsical too, but it’s something else entirely. I guess I’ll say Lover bc I like the time signature of it. I think it’s a waltz if I’m not mistaken. Idk, I haven’t listened to it in a while.)

Folklore: I literally don’t know the songs on this album. I could not recite a single lyric. I know the names, but I did not listen to this album. If at all, I would’ve only heard it if someone else’s spotify shuffled and they skipped past a song on this album in favor of a different Taylor song.

Evermore: NO BODY, NO CRIME (The only answer. Idgaf. Champagne Problems is repetitive and kinda boring. Sorry, but it had to be said. No Body, No Crime is a STORY. It is a true crime podcast in a SONG! With harmonies for EVERYONE! The vibes it gives off are immaculate. It’s not full-on country, but it kinda is and it’s great. It’s basically like Taylor made her own spin on Church Bells by Carrie Underwood, which is a banger.)

There is sooo much I love about Shirahama's art work and style but good god her character design and world building designs are top tier. Like a lot of fantasy based manga does mashup plants and animals for a fun little twist but there is something in the way she does it that just makes all her creatures and fauna extra believable in a fantasy setting. I think its because she mashes up the most unexpected species together, like it's so delightfully creative and inspired.

And her people are BEAUTIFUL with a variety of everything, hair, skintone, height, body types, costuming, etc. And she does it in such a manner that feels like a good mirror to everyday life which is SUCH a good thing because life is just naturally that way instead of doing it in a tokenized manner! Frankly all the more serious subjects in Witch Hat as well are handle so gently and given proper respect that they dont feel like someone beating you over the head or added clumsily, but instead feel like genuine lesson she is trying to share with her readers, especially younger ones.

Witch Hat Atelier really is such a breathe of fresh air. I'm always so dazzled with every new chapter 😭😭

Did a fic trope tier list with a friend and figured I’d share it here (under a cut bc it has a few M rated tropes (like 3 generic ones nothing super explicit but just a heads up) I put them in order within the tier as well as some general explanations (mostly because I am bored and do not want to edit anymore)

Some clarification:

Friends to enemies to lovers is actually the superior mashup and I live for it. Also first kiss and missing scenes are like obligatory bc I write them a lot and I also like reading them.

College >> HS AU every time for me. Also aging up characters to be in their 20s is the best bc the freedom of being adults living by themselves and getting to do things is nice. HS (esp HPA or normal HS for DR) are fun and cute and I like reading them. But I just love the freedom you get with adult AU’s and exploring how characters would change as they get a bit older. 

Okay the blue tier. I love dark fiction but I am super picky about it. Exploring dark and taboo topics is interesting and I like to read them but it’s hard to navigate the really good ones from just that feel just edgy for the sake of it. Ones that manage to actually hit emotions and interesting characterization are top tier. The good ones are great but the bad ones are just painful.

As for PWP- keeping it mostly sfw but if I can exchange any character name and it wouldn’t change the scene.... I really don’t care and won’t enjoy reading it all that much. However, if it’s IC and well written who needs a plot? 

Character death just depends but grief/mourning is something I love reading so if it’s done well- I’m in. Miscommunication and unrequited just have to be done right but can hit hard when it is done well (otherwise it just feels forced and convenient). Gen fics are good as long as the premise is, I don’t need shippy stuff but the lack of ships does mean less attention so gen fic gems can be hard to find. 

AUs are just ones I’m picky about. Fanfic is nice because it skips the world building stage of writing some but some AUs require it and it’s hit/miss for me- just picky with these. Kind of depends on my own mood and just how it’s executed. Characterization changes a lot in an AU setting so it depends if I still vibe with it (not a bad thing- people act differently in different situations but its why I’m not always in the Mood for AU’s) 

Some soulmates stuff gets me and some just doesn’t. Most of my favorite works of fiction revolve around fighting destiny and thats a trope I really like and soulmates being a destined partner thing is kinda not my thing. Some are really good though and I don’t mind reading them! I just generally prefer relationships being depicted as difficult and requiring work as opposed to just ‘meant to be’. I def like it more than I used to (soulmates and hanahaki used to just not do it for me but theres fics I really like with them now- esp hanahaki) 

Rarely is where I’d read it if someone rec’d it but probably would never search it out

I meant to put crossover in rarely and I’m not redoing this. But I’ll read a themed crossover but like characters from multiple things probably won’t read (fun in RP but usually messy in fics)

Baby fics... if it’s an infant. No. If it’s an aged up single parent kind of deal. I’ve read that for a couple ships and really liked it. 

Alright thinking about it sex pollen is kind of just... SFW despair disease. And I will clarify that I do love fics that use mind altering game mechanics (status effects/despair disease/love hotel/gift items) as a plot device in either a SFW or NSFW context but general just sex pollen is boring to me. 

... I rarely find crack funny (sorry) 

ABO fits under the PWP qualification of it just doesn’t ever feel IC to me because it feels contrived and more about the ‘roles’ and that just isn’t my thing. Pregnancy just makes me uncomfortable in general so...

Okay I’m bored so here’s my thoughts on the first three kingdom stages:

TBZ:

I had pretty high expectations for them since I saw what they did on RTK. And they delivered absolutely on that, it was a very interesting stage, I enjoyed the theme, doing a ASOFI/GOT theme, it suited the song well. I think there performance ability is top freaking tier. If I had a criticism it’s that the visual/performance elements overshadowed the song performance itself. I feel if I dont watch the video it doesn’t have as much impact.

Ikon:

Loved what they did with their song mashup, I love how they reworked both and made something very interesting and very different to the original. I could listen to it on repeat. I think they did great with a limited visual element, it was simple but effectively done.

BTOB:

Even tho I am least familiar with BTOB I think theirs was my favourite of the three. Excellent balance of visual/performance elements and the musical elements. Live vocals always on point and I really love the traditional styling and action that they incorporated in it. I think BTOB and their team should be really proud of what they delivered.
