my mom is quite overprotective, too overprotective and sometimes embarrassing sometimes. however, i was reading stuff on reddit about overprotective parents and they frame them as abusive. i know my mom isn't abusive, she's just over protective because of circumstances in her life and quite lonely. i know its coming from a place of love and when i talk to her we have good discussions and she's willing to see my point. she's not theperfect parentandmademistakesandidontwantppltoseeherasbad

I guess maybe the first thing to say here is that the crowd on Reddit tends to be an overdramatic bunch, especially in communities where interpersonal relationships are being discussed. Pretty much every relationship question I've ever seen on Reddit has people saying, "dump him!" or "cut off all contact with that person immediately! They're abusive/toxic/a narcissist", even in the most innocuous of situations. Reddit can absolutely be a helpful place, but the people on there are just random people, and they're not always right.

That said, like with a lot of things, abuse is a spectrum. Certainly, there can be parents who are overprotective but not abusive, but there can also be parents who are overprotective to the point of abuse. If you feel like your mom's actions are mostly just embarrassing or annoying, it's probably not abuse. The fact that you feel that she listens to you and that you have good discussions is a good sign. It may not be an ideal situation for your emotional and social growth, but from what you've said, it doesn't sound like the situation you're in is traumatic.

However, if you feel like your mother's overprotective behaviors are causing you serious emotional distress or emotional harm, her actions may be abusive, whether she intends them to be or not. Emotional abuse can be really complicated because it's not black and white. A parent can have the best of intentions and still be abusive. A parent can be a good parent some of the time and still be abusive. A child can love and care about their parent while still suffering from their parent's abusive behaviors. A parent can become a good parent and never be abusive again, but that doesn't erase the damage that they inflicted. A parent can have reasons that make sense for why they are the way that they are, but it still doesn't mean their actions are good or correct or helpful. We can have empathy for people without validating or supporting their actions.

Someone who I think talks about these issues really thoughtfully is actually the former child actress Jennette McCurdy. In her book I'm Glad My Mom Died and on her podcast Empty Inside (as well as several podcasts she's done to promote the book, many of which you can find on YouTube), she discusses the intricacies of living with an emotionally abusive mother. In particular, she talks about how her mom was her favorite person, even as her abuse was ongoing, and how she didn't realize how dysfunctional her relationship with her mother was until her mother died. I do think that's true of a lot of abusive situations, especially emotionally abusive ones- it can be hard to accurately assess them when you're in the middle of them, because you don't really have anything else to compare them to.

Ultimately, if you're worried about your situation, the best thing you can do is talk to an adult that you trust about it. For example, that could be a friend's parent, a teacher, a school counselor, a therapist, your doctor, a family member, or a child helpline. They can help you figure out how to handle the situation you're in and what to do about it if changes need to be made.
