Seven uncomfortable truths

Anyone wanting to fully understand the current Middle East crisis must face up to realities on the ground. For many, however, this is at odds with the schematic picture they have in their heads. Here are seven uncomfortable truths crucial to de-escalating the situation and finding a solution

Regional tensions will not de-escalate without a ceasefire in Gaza.

The war between Israel and Hamas is directly or indirectly affecting all nations, their governments and 400 million people in the Middle East. 

The military clashes on the Israeli-Lebanese border, the missile attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea, attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq, Syria and Jordan as well as subsequent American retaliatory action, Israeli missile attacks on Syria and the targeted killing of high-ranking militia leaders – these are all sideshows destabilising parts of the region. 

Yes, people in Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iran are suffering first and foremost because of the unscrupulousness and incompetence of their rulers, but in many places, the historical conflict between Israelis and Palestinians over land serves as a projection screen, a pretext or to fan the flames of conflict. It cannot be managed with security measures nor resolved by military means.

The axis of resistance is capable of more than terror.

Its members – Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in the Palestinian territories, the Houthis in Yemen, the Islamic resistance in Iraq and the Iranian-controlled militias in Syria – all share a common ideology with their sponsor Iran: enmity towards Israel and the USA. 

But this isn't just used to justify the armed struggle, it's also a way for them to gain political power and social influence in their respective countries. They participate in governments, control regions and benefit from injustice, state failure and local conflicts. The war in Gaza is boosting their popularity – at home and across the region as a whole.

But Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis and the like aren't simply taking orders from Tehran, they're also hybrid actors with their own sets of interests. To regard them simply as aberrant terrorist gangs in the service of Iran doesn't go far enough. For sure, they would struggle to operate without the financial and military support of the Islamic Republic, but not every rocket launch or drone attack is coordinated with the leadership in Tehran. 

It also had no prior knowledge of plans for 7 October. Operational autonomy with simultaneous strategic coordination by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards – this formula enables rulers in Tehran to ramp up pressure on the common enemy Israel and the USA without taking responsibility for it.

No one wants full-scale war, but individual flashpoints can still get out of control.

A direct confrontation between the USA and Israel on the one side and Iran and its allies on the other would come at a huge cost to everyone and is therefore in nobody's interests. The threats and sabre rattling continues, but the military attacks remain limited. They are aimed at deterring the enemy and encouraging a retreat; while at the same time signalling strength and determination to their own clientele.

But proxy wars harbour the risk of escalating unintentionally due to opaque chains of command and the fact that conflict parties aren't communicating directly with one another. To prevent this, those involved must shoot less and talk more.

American and British missile attacks on Houthi positions in Yemen aren't making Red Sea shipping safer – drone defence manages that perfectly well – they're turning the Houthis into heroes in the fight for the Palestinians and against Western imperialism. Equally counterproductive are Israel's attempts to drive Hezbollah from the border with military force, so that tens of thousands of evacuated Israelis can return to their homes and live in safety. 

Although from the area north of the Litani River 30 km from the border, Hezbollah can no longer fire precision-guided missiles at border towns, its rockets can still reach targets in Israel. Israeli intimidation is also boosting Hezbollah's standing within the populace. In Lebanon too, tens of thousands of people have fled from the south; Israel is seen as the aggressor. 

In view of an imminent Israeli offensive, many see Hezbollah as necessary resistance, even those who have nothing in common with the Shia Party of God and in more peaceful times would be calling for its disarmament. Diplomatic efforts are more promising, but without progress in Gaza these will come to nothing, as Hezbollah is only prepared to negotiate its withdrawal if Israel halts its attacks on Gaza.

Netanyahu needs crisis mode to stay in power.

Israel's prime minister was prepared to abolish the independence of the judiciary to save his political career, engaging with fascists to do so. These utilised elements of the Israeli army to enforce their settlement and annexations plans, which contributed to security force failures on 7 October. The process of reappraising these political and military-strategic errors will begin as soon as the war is over; most Israelis are already calling for Netanyahu to step down. 

That's why the prime minister has no interest in bringing the conflict to a swift end, he needs a permanent state of crisis to restore his image as Mr. Security. He promises not to relinquish security control over Gaza, to prevent a sovereign Palestinian state and to end Hezbollah bombardment in the north, even if this may result in an open confrontation with Lebanon. 

Instead of making concessions to free more hostages, Netanyahu and his right-wing extremist government are fanning the flames of the conflict to push through their own power fantasies. They are not partners, but an obstacle on the path to peace.

Israel's radical settlers and nationalists mean business and what's happening in Gaza serves their goals.

The Hamas attack has bolstered Israel's right-wing extremists; some of their racist views are reflected within the public. For the settler movement, the war in Gaza represents the one-off opportunity to promote their visions of a Greater Israel: the permanent settlement of the West Bank and Gaza, which goes hand in hand with the institutionalised unequal treatment of Palestinians (apartheid under international law) or their expulsion. 

These openly presented plans fly in the face of international law, UN resolutions and what the rest of the world, including close allies of Israel, regard as a solution to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

Nevertheless, there's little resistance. Americans and Europeans repeat what's not allowed to happen in Gaza without admitting that this is exactly what Israeli warfare is amounting to. No territorial changes? To the south of Gaza City, the army is building a military road from East to West that divides the territory and establishes a buffer zone along the border, twice as large as before. Of the 2,850 buildings there, Israeli TV broadcaster Channel 12 says 1,100 have already been destroyed; farmland is also affected. 

No permanent displacement of the local population? 1.9 million people are now refugees in Gaza, the destruction of homes and infrastructure – more than half of residential buildings, hospitals, universities, schools, mosques and churches have been damaged or destroyed – is hampering the prospects of return and a future existence. 

No Israeli occupation and settlement of Gaza? Netanyahu's 'day after' plan for Gaza may not entail settlement construction, but it does envisage a permanent military presence. Under his plan, the Israeli army should retain "unlimited operational freedom" and control of all land west of Jordan, i.e. all access by land, sea and air. The Palestinians are to be "demilitarised" and "deradicalised" and self-governed "as far as possible". This is a situation they are already familiar with – it's called occupation.

The most specific plans for post-war Gaza are coming from pro-settler organisations and real estate companies: Beach-side villas and the "promotion of voluntary emigration" aimed at scattering the population of Gaza throughout the world and destroying it as a group (genocide under international law). 

The International Court of Justice has called on the Israeli government to prevent and punish the direct and public incitement to hatred and expulsion and protect the people in Gaza from it. At a "Victory of Israel" conference in Jerusalem, 11 ministers in the Israeli government celebrated the resettlement of the Gaza Strip. It is high time that any support for this government comes with strings attached.

Using military means alone to fight Hamas is strengthening them politically.

Hamas is already more popular than it was before 7 October – not necessarily in Gaza, but in the West Bank their approval ratings have tripled. Although many people don't share their Islamist ideology, they respect them as a "resistance movement". 

Although people in the Middle East reject crimes such as those perpetrated on 7 October – sexual violence, the slaughter of civilians and the abduction of women and children – they fete Hamas as the only actor achieving something for the Palestinian cause – even if that's just steering international attention onto the suffering of the Palestinian people. The 7 October atrocities are either played down or dismissed as fake news.

This reality denial has assumed frightening proportions on both sides: the 7 October massacre is being ignored and denied in the Arab world; people in Israel don't want to see the suffering of civilians in Gaza. Existential fears intermingle with the desire for revenge, the other is dehumanised as a way of doing them maximum harm. But rather than creating any kind of security, this just generates more terror and violence.

After months of war, the aim of obliterating Hamas as a militia is proving to be unrealistic. Even if most of the fighters in Gaza in dead and all the tunnels and rockets have been destroyed, any remaining supporters will reform and find new recruits. 

And they don't need many to act as spoilers torpedoing any attempts to establish a post-war order. For this reason alone, it would appear sensible to use existing channels to the Hamas leadership in Doha for the hostage negotiations and indirectly involve pragmatists within Hamas.

Hamas will also continue to exist as a political party, social movement and ideology. That's why the world must find a way to interact with it, just as it once did with Yasser Arafat's Fatah – elevated from terrorists into negotiating partners when there was hope for a political solution to the conflict during the hammering out of the Oslo accords.

Recent documents show that there are politicians within Hamas open to progress along comparable lines. In contrast to the organisation's founding charter of 1988, its 2017 policy document no longer contains any anti-Jewish references; Hamas declared its willingness to accept a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders. The charter states that Hamas is not waging a war against Jews, but against the occupation.

In January, Hamas published a 16-page report which also explains its motivations for the 7 October terror attack. The document is titled "Our Narrative… Operation Al Aqsa Flood" and deserves attention – even as a piece of propaganda.

The "operation" targeted Israeli military sites and was aimed at detaining soldiers for a prisoner exchange, the report read. The Al-Qassam Brigades' fighters were committed to "avoiding harm to civilians, especially children, women and elderly people". Any targeting of civilians happened "accidently" and as "faults" due to the rapid collapse of the Israeli security and military system. What sounds like a mockery of the victims corresponds to the narrative in the Middle East.

In its report, Hamas also refers to investigations and statements from the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice, thereby speaking the language of the West. In statements aimed at the anti-colonial left wing and the Global South, it writes that it is not fighting against Jews because they're Jews, but against the Zionists occupying Palestine: "Yet, it is the Zionists who constantly identify Judaism and the Jews with their own colonial project and illegal entity".

The document is evidence of strategic thought processes within the Hamas leadership. Members of this leadership will attempt to convert their current popularity into political influence; any route to a solution to the Palestinian question must lead to them. Negotiations between Fatah and Hamas are already underway; Hamas could join the PLO in the medium term. 

The two-state solution is dead, but without Palestinian sovereignty, there can be no future for Gaza and no normalisation of Arab-Israeli relations.

For a solution in Gaza, to give dignity to the Palestinians and security to the Israelis, the withdrawal of the Israeli army and the free but internationally monitored movement of goods and people is fundamental. 

After all, no Arab nation will want to get involved in Gaza while it is under permanent Israeli military control. However, the financial, political, economic and possibly military support of neighbouring states is crucial for Gaza's resurrection.

That's why U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is making regular trips to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan and Egypt before conducting talks in Tel Aviv and Ramallah. In a bid to wrest a commitment to a sovereign Palestinian state from the Israeli government, he's attempting to lure it in with improved relations with its Arab neighbours. Blinken knows: for a normalisation of relations with Israel and unlike in the past – Saudi Arabia and other states will insist on Palestinian self-determination.

As this isn't on the cards, it must at least be promised by Israel and promoted by the U.S. and Europe. Should the Israeli government continue to deny Palestinians the right to state sovereignty, the Americans and Europeans should follow the example of the more than 100 countries that have already recognised Palestine as a state. Then, the unilateral position wouldn't be global recognition, but Israel's denial of Palestinian statehood.

Ultimately, the two-state solution envisaged in Oslo 1993 won't be realised, because most of what are now 700,000 Israeli settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem aren't just going to disappear into thin air – they're not going anywhere. A more realistic prospect might therefore be a confederation of two states – a proposal that experts have been mulling over for years that would solve the two big problems: the continued existence of Israel as a Jewish state and the Palestinian right of return.

This would allow for the existence of an Israeli and a Palestinian state (more or less within the 1967 borders), whose citizens – like those living in the European Union – are permitted to live in the other country without acquiring citizenship there. A settler remains an Israeli citizen and votes in Israel, even if he lives in the West Bank and is subject to the laws there. 

A Palestinian from Berlin or Bethlehem becomes a Palestinian citizen and elects parliament in Ramallah, even if he moves to Haifa or Tel Aviv. Laws would control immigration on both sides. Israel would remain Jewish and Palestine Arab – but people could live where they want or stay where they are.

This is difficult to imagine in the current situation, with such levels of mistrust, fear and hatred on both sides. But without vision, there can be no rapprochement. And without rapprochement, there will only be more violence and escalation – across the region as a whole.

Must it be this difficult to survive as a Community Health Worker?

The Ministries of Health in the Global South and billionaire-run charitable organisations reportedly face "several constraints" when it comes to paying the community health workers, most of them underprivileged women, they're heavily reliant on in executing their respective big-budget healthcare programmes. But the organisations actively promote their concern for the health and wellbeing of other impoverished women.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has granted funds to Women in Global Health "to research the status of women's leadership in the health sector in Nigeria, Kenya and India". However, the foundation hasn't yet been able to move on any further from "thinking critically" about how to support the community health workers.

Only 25% of women occupy leadership positions in health globally when over 65% of jobs in the health sector are held by women. About six million female health workers hardly receive any financial compensation for their life-saving services. Despite being the only source of primary health care to the poorest sections of the society, many community health aides have no access to transport facilities that would enable them to deliver their services in a timely manner without having to exhaust themselves by walking long distances to visit the targeted households. In regions plagued by conflict, these workers find it even more challenging to help the sick in the absence of essential supplies and transport.

Philanthropists, "in collaboration with" the governments of the respective countries their charitable programmes are put in place, find it cost-effective to budget healthcare programmes without giving the community health workers their due. These overburdened and unsalaried health workers, having no proper formal training, enough personal protective equipment, and protection against gender-based violence, are left to explore ways to lobby politicians from their remote locations in the hope of beginning to receive a living wage.

When frustrated community health workers go on a strike to claim their deserved remuneration, poverty-stricken adults and children are badly affected. The world's largest community health workforce, the Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), are still keeping up their fight for a fixed minimum wage and other basic benefits that any person performing tasks on behalf of the government should be entitled to.

We have social entrepreneurs commercialising Africa's issue of inadequate access to healthcare to solve it. It's disturbing to imagine a community health worker trying to interest the caregivers of a sick child into purchasing a solar lamp and other products in exchange for a diagnosis. These community health workers, at the mercy of the entrepreneurs who are slow to hire and quick to fire, will lose their only source of income – about 20 USD a month – if they fail to become successful salespeople. These workers, also labelled as "agents" by the social entrepreneurs, end up spending their hard-earned money on purchasing their respective employers' products to sell to the poor at a near-market price. Even the charitable organisations that take pride in giving the community health workers financial (based on "the geographic differences in labour costs") and non-financial incentives are simply the enablers of wage slavery.

However, a Coalition of these organisations began in 2019 after claiming to have demonstrated that salaried (the amount of the salary being as low as 10 or 20 USD per month) and digitally equipped community health workers can stop preventable deaths in the outlying parts of Africa where more than 80% of the community health workers still remain unpaid.

The essence of health aides has been known since the late 1800s when Russia's Feldshers treated people in the rural regions in the absence of physicians. But the the idea that the community health workers deserve a salary for their back-breaking work just started being popularized, through "in-depth research" and "advocacy", by the Coalition which is now composed of about five thousand community health workers, for-profit companies and corporations, and other non-governmental organisations.

But why do these social entrepreneurs, investing in micro-franchising Africa's health sector by training and monitoring the community health workers using advanced technology, avoid paying their employed workers a living wage? Well, they simply blame the World Bank for asking the respective governments of the countries they work in to avoid inflating the workers' wage bill...

For many rural healthcare workers who are merely treated as volunteers in the least developed nations, joining hands with the Coalition, that emphasizes on a goal of technologically upgrading the services of the community health workers, may be their only way towards getting any recognition, even if it's a monthly stipend of 30 USD, from their respective governments. At a time when many care workers of the USA, the country that dominates the international financial institutions like the World Bank, would rather wait tables at an eatery than work in the health sector, it's probably too early to imagine a bright future for the community health workers in economically poor countries. The question is, when will the few individuals in power face "constraints" that prevent the inequitable distribution of wealth in this world?

Natural Gas Bonanza?

Euro energy squeeze gives Israeli and Egyptian partners economic boost!

Most western nations have an embargo in place against Russia due to the special military action taking place in Ukraine. In response to E.U. support of the resistance to Russia’s invasion, Russia has cut the fuel exported to Germany. This sequence of events is giving the Israeli government the ability to provide natural gas resources to Western Europe that were previously dependent on natural gas from Russia, along with its Mediterranean economic partner Egypt. Israel can now make major economic strides and even compete with energy super suppliers such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia with respect to attracting international capital into the nation. This is good news for the post-virus financial outlook of the land overall, and places Israel in a position of world prominence in yet another category. This characteristic is added to technological and agricultural innovation, humanitarian, and medical benevolent support for other nations regarding disasters, and a reputation for archaeological discovery and historical preservation, that is copied around the world.

“This is what the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says, ‘I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit (benefit), Who leads you in the way that you should go’” Isaiah 48:17(AMP).

The main offshore facility supplying the natural gas through Egypt for the liquification process prior to European transport, is adjacent to the disputed maritime boundary between Israel and Lebanon. This will not affect the deal directly, but it may shed light on future conflicts that Israel may face based on prophetic biblical interpretation and the reasons why; envy and covetousness. The majority Muslim nations that surround Israel and currently remain in a state of war with her to this day, operate in situations between failed economies and even fractured political structures. These nations tend to accuse Israel of co-opting their resources directly or they make an indirect claim on these resources because the land (and in this case the seas that surround it) “rightfully” belongs to the Palestinian populations that are currently “confined” to Gaza and areas in Judea and Samaria. Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthis in Yemen and Hamas in Gaza would contend that the wealth Israeli companies currently possess should be in the hands of Palestinian Arabs. Passages in Ezekiel indicate that a future war in this region directed against God’s people will have to do with RESOURCES, and not competing religious belief systems. Iran and Turkey are also facing severe economic pressure which will easily provoke angst when compared with Israel. Adding Russia to this group of those who will have a bone to pick with Israeli economic success, frames a conflict scenario foretold almost 3 millennia ago.

Believers should be encouraged that Israel is taking center stage on the world platform and what that means in reference to the infallibility of the Word of God and His perfect will, for not only Israel, but all of us who worship the God of Israel!

Avvar History Reconstruction, part 7

Finally, I’ve reached the last part of this project! “Avvar History Reconstruction” is my attempt to piece together what’s known about the Avvar history, starting from their journey south-east (still as one with the Alamarri) through the birth of their tribe, the toll of Tevene occupation, the wars with neighbouring nations, all the way into the Dragon Age.

It took 10 000 words, 29 pages, and 13 maps to cover over 3000 years of history, and it just barely scratches the surface. There are many blank spots that might never be filled, as the series seems to be moving away from the Frostback Mountains. But that just means it’s a free space for headcanons.

Part 7: Current state

The Avvar people still reside in the remote parts of the Frostback Mountains. Their population numbers are unknown but they are able to endure in the harsh environment with relative success.

They are not recognized as sovereign state by any of the neighbouring nations, and the situation is unlikely to change in the years to come. The Avvar don’t have a central government, each hold is led by a different thane, and they don’t seem inclined to significantly alter their way of living and imitate Ferelden by uniting the tribes into a new nation. Occasionally, they form alliances with nearby holds, but there has been no large-scale movement since the rise of warlord Balak during the Steel Age. Gurd Harofsen, the leader of the Jaws of Hakkon, may have had a potential to follow in Balak’s footsteps, but his warmongering tendencies were thwarted before he could threaten the Lowlands. Even if Gurd did succeed, I find it highly improbable that attacking the Lowlanders with Hakkon Wintersbreath on the leash would benefit the Avvar as a whole, much less that it could grant them sovereignty. It’d certainly result in a great chaos - comparable to a Blight, from what we’re told in the Jaws of Hakkon DLC - that would lead to resistance forming in the neighbouring nations. Ferelden, still weakened from the real Blight, would suffer heavy losses, but the chance that the Jaws of Hakkon could vanquish the Lowlands is extremely infinitesimal. All in all, I see no signs in canon sources of the Avvar becoming a sovereign nation in the near future, either through peaceable unification or through conquest.

It appears that the Avvar tribes are concentrated in the southern part of the Frostback Mountains. The northern and central regions were probably depopulated as a result of the Tevinter occupation and the conflicts between Orlais and Ferelden, forcing the Avvar further up and south into the Frostbacks. The eastern frontiers may overlap with the lands inhabited by the Chasind people. The Avvar tribes who live near the Korcari Wilds possibly share some characteristics with the Chasind.

Let’s review the Avvar settlements one by one.

Stone Bear Hold is the only Avvar hold whose current location and status are fully known, as we can visit it in the Jaws of Hakkon DLC and observe the Avvar lifestyle from up close. It’s situated in the far south of the Frostback Mountains. According to Arvid Rolfsen, a few generations ago, when he was very young, the hold was located further north, but it moved into the Frostback Basin due to unspecified reasons and remained in the same place for a couple of decades.[1] The Avvar holds are said to be temporary, but it’s unknown what’s the average time between relocations. It might range from several generations to a few seasons, depending on the situation in the hold and the access to food sources, though I believe that it’s usually on the longer end. The Stone-Bear Hold inhabitants appear to obtain their nourishment in large part from hunting and foraging, but it’s also evidenced that they regularly engage in animal husbandry, and possibly in growing crops.

The Journal of Gurd Harofsen contains the following description of Stone-Bear Hold:

“The tales tell of this area, but the Stone-Bears, a hold of fishermen and chicken farmers, have lived here for generations and seen no sign.”[2]

Codex entry: On Avvar Cuisine can be obtained by interacting with a swine head inside a merchant’s shop in Stone-Bear Hold, and there’s also a number of pig carcasses and sausages placed around the room, suggesting that the inhabitants of the hold raise pigs for meat consumption. The food items found in the hold also include cheese, indicating that the Stone-Bear folks keep dairy animals, and this is confirmed in conversations with Svarah Sun-Hair, as she references goats multiple times.

Svarah: “Pens are for goats and chickens, not hold-kin.” [...] “We have no need of your lowlands, not when our goats are fat and our fish are plenty.”

(Fun fact: Avvar swear words commonly reference domesticated animals, examples: “goat-lovers” used by both Svarah and Hask;  “goat-kissing” and “chicken-craps” used by Svarah.)

The evidence of arable farming among the Avvar is less apparent in-game. Some of the food items found in Stone-Bear Hold resemble bread, pies, and potatoes, suggesting that they do grow crops in larger quantities, but I do not recall any confirmation of that in dialogues or codex entries. The farming practices are, however, referenced in the official tabletop guide, though this source has debatable canonicity, so… take this with a grain of salt.

“In late spring and through the summer, the air becomes warm and humid. The farmers among the Avvars take swift advantage of the brief planting season by moving down from their stone-walled holds and into the foothills to grow crops, which they tend in nomadic fashion as they herd their flocks of goats and keep wary of lowlanders.”[3]

All in all, I would say that the Avvar people do not relocate often, certainly not as often as the fully nomadic Dalish. Stone-Bear Hold shows signs of permanence, or at least semi-permanence. Perhaps in the past, the Avvar had practiced a nomadic lifestyle of typical hunter-gatherers, but they’re transitioning into another mode of living.

Now let’s take a look at the holds we haven’t visited.

Red-Lion Hold is the hold that gave birth to the new iteration of the Jaws of Hakkon. It was destroyed during the Blight and its inhabitants had to flee. Gurd Harofsen described in his journal that “The darkspawn struck Red-Lion Hold. I heard the news in a tavern in Redcliffe.”[4] so I assume that Red-Lion Hold was located south of Lake Calenhad and was attacked by the darkspawn horde before Redcliffe, though its exact location is a mystery. Therefore, its placement on the map is just one of my ideas. When the news of Red-Lion’s destruction reached Gurd, he left the mercenary group he was part of and returned to his homeland. He gathered the survivors and set a new course for them, and they became the Jaws of Hakkon reborn. The newly formed faction was unlike the other Avvar tribes. As Gurd declared in his journal “We will build no home, for homes can die.”[5] And indeed, they were continuously on the move, searching for Hakkon to bring him back and set him on the Lowlanders, until they reached the Frostback Basin. This wandering behaviour is seen as odd among the people of Stone-Bear Hold, further suggesting that the typical Avvar settlement is somewhat permanent. As I discussed previously, I doubt the Jaws of Hakkon’s plan would in any way improve the situation of the Avvar people.

Stone-Bear Hold also has contact with other Avvar holds, as evidenced in conversations with Svarah:

“Other holds share oaths with the Jaws of Hakkon. They are sworn to defend or avenge them.”

as well as the ambient dialogue heard after defeating the Jaws of Hakkon: 

Avvar man: We should have a feast and invite the other friend-sworn holds.

Avvar woman: It feels like ages since we saw them. Should the lowlanders come?”

However, these holds are never identified by name, and it’s difficult to say how distant they are from Stone-Bear Hold.

Edvarr Hold is the hold from which chieftain Movran the Under and his son Hand of Korth originate. Its name is only referenced in ambient dialogue during the fight with Hand of Korth, when some other members of the hold, who followed the Hand into the Fallow Mire, may exclaim “For Edvarr Hold!”. However, it could also be how Hand of Korth decided to rename the Hargrave Keep after claiming it, and if that’s the case, the other hold led by chieftain Movran is unnamed in-game, as he himself doesn’t identify which hold he’s governing while speaking to the Inquisitor. Personally, I’m assuming that “Edvarr Hold” does refer to the hold led by Movran, and I’m using it as such. Edvarr Hold is probably located somewhere in the south-eastern part of the Frostbacks, in or near the Fallow Mire region, which is bordering with the Korcari Wilds. Movran has sent his son, Hand of Korth, to get rid of the Venatori in the area. Amund, the Sky Watcher who handles funerals among his tribe members, can also be found in the Fallow Mire, further leading me to believe that Hand of Korth did not go too far from his original hold. Depending on the player's choices, the settlement might actually become abandoned, as Movran takes his tribesmen to Skyhold, and he can be exiled together with them to Tevinter. If this option is chosen, Movran and his people relocate to Tevinter, possibly for the rest of their lives, which is rather intriguing, and I wonder what will become of them in the future.

“We have received word that "Movran the Under" has made good on your judgment of armed exile in Tevinter.  He and his clan immediately staked a claim to a large section of land along the Imperial Highway, at the edge of the Silent Plains.”[6]

Fennec-Tooth Hold is a settlement mentioned in the codex entry “On Avvar cuisine”. It had been visited by an Orlesian noble, so I would place it on the western slope of the Frostback Mountains. Its current status is unknown, though I like to think that it’s still inhabited. If it survived the wars between Orlais and Ferelden, it might yet thrive.

Wyvern Hold, Kinloch Hold and Vigil’s Keep were inhabited by the Avvar in the Ancient Age, prior to Tevinter occupation of the south (see Part 3 and Part 4 for more information). Judging by the information available, they were never reclaimed by the Avvar, even after the Imperium ceded its territories.

Skyhold too may have been inhabited by the Avvar at some point in history. The fortress had been claimed by many different groups of people, including the Chasind[7] and the Alamarri.[8] The name “Skyhold” might derive from the Avvar, seeing as it fits the naming convention of the Avvar settlements.

One of the notes mentions the hints of Avvar imagery in Skyhold.

“Avvar totemic representation of mabari, which followed into early Fereldan imagery. Ancient; we can't know if they were carved here or brought later. Interesting note: the kaddis pattern is subtly different than is typical, with unmistakable Tevinter elements. A strange addition if the occupants were Fereldan. Rivets in the pillar are often marks of generations of occupants, but eight seems high given how often Skyhold changed hands. Unless these are breeding generations of mabari. An interesting question would be: "eight starting from what?"[9]

These totems could represent the first generations of the mabari that deserted their previous owners and instead joined with the “barbarians” living in the lands occupied by Tevinter Imperium. The mabari breed was originally created by Tevene mages to help subdue the local population.[10] The Alamarri (and subsequently Fereldans) become known for their connection to the mabari, but the war dogs also accompany some Avvar people, such as Kell ap Morgan, a former Avvar jarl.

However, even if some Avvar had lived in Skyhold, it was many, many years before. Prior to the Inquisition relocating there, the fortress had been completely abandoned, probably for the last few centuries.

Speaking of Kell ap Morgan, he used to be a leader of an Avvar clan. His home is briefly described in the novel “The Calling” by David Gaider, though only in the form of a Fade dream. It’s implied that Kell’s clan suffered a great loss, something that affected his wife and child and caused Kell to abandon the Frostback Mountains and join the Wardens down the line. It’s possible that his entire hold has perished, though the reason has not been revealed in the novel, nor in any other media, as far as I know. The name of the settlement is also a mystery.

Another briefly referenced Avvar clan pops up in the story of Marethari Talas. When Marethari was a young mage, the First to the Keeper, her clan set camp in the Frostback Mountains, though it’s unclear where exactly. Likely, it was the eastern side, bordering Ferelden. In the winter of 8:82 Blessed, after a good hunting season, the clan was attacked by Avvar warriors for an unknown reason. The name of their hold is also unknown. The Keeper was gravely wounded in the attack, and many members of the Dalish clan were killed, including Marethari’s husband. Marethari took leadership of the survivors and ordered them to go into the Ferelden lowlands, while she went the other way, into an alpine forest, to seek out the Witch of the Wilds. She returned three days later, and the next day, the previous Keeper of the Sabrae clan died.

“And the Avvar tribe fell prey to what some survivors said were trees come to life, the wrath of the Mountain-Father himself.”[11]

The tabletop campaign also includes an Avvar settlement called Redhold, but as I mentioned, its position in the canon is debatable, so I’ll only point out that it exists in the RPG guidebook.

Summing up, there’s only one Avvar settlement that we can really examine from up close, with possibly two more persisting into the current times. As such, a lot of guesswork and headcanoning is involved when discussing this part of the Dragon Age setting. Each Avvar tribe is also a bit different from one another, but they still share core values, such as the worship of spirits. I encourage everyone interested in Avvar lore to explore it and draw their own conclusions, but what matters in the end is to have fun. I certainly enjoyed working on these theories, and I hope you enjoyed reading them if you reached this far.

Tubbo makes memory bad jokes due to logging onto the server near Ranboo’s house. He begins to recap the previous last stream (SEE PREVIOUS SUMMARY FOR DETAILS.) before proceeding to gather basalt for the interrogation room.

This interrogation room will be used for dramatic effect.

On his way to Snowchester, Tubbo noticed the disappearance of the vines. He is too confused by Hannah’s Among Us statues to pay them much mind. He then checks up on Michael before finding a place to build the interrogation room.

Tubbo decides on a location for the interrogation room. This room is being built within Snowchester’s walls of defence. It is being made of all the traumatic blocks in the server’s history, including obsidian and blackstone.

Tubbo runs out of blackstone and proceeds to find more for the interrogation room. Instead of gathering it himself, he steals, mainly from Eret.

In unrelated news: Among Us is now canon.

Tubbo declares two things. One, that gadgets need to be placed in the interrogation room and Two, that a suspects list must be created. He proceeds to finish off the build. He then declares his want to appear threatening against the suspects he brings in.

By doing this, the interrogation room is essentially trauma incarnate.

No-one is allowed to know that this room exists until Tubbo begins interrogating other users of the server. Due to this, he needs to hide the room in plain sight.

The room is dark on purpose, with the only light sources being redstone torches and the magma block ceiling. With shaders on, this looks terrifying without the sole lantern giving it atmosphere.

Tubbo marvels at his creation, saying that it is “so spooky.” before accidentally getting high on acid. (what?)

The first thing he does after getting sober is speak to Foolish. Foolish ends up being the first person he interviews.

FOOLISH INTERVIEW SUMMARY

Tubbo informs Foolish that a nuke went missing. Foolish was the only person online on the server at the time the nukes went missing aside from Tubbo and Jack Manifold. Foolish informs Tubbo that he was building at the time the incident occurred. Foolish is confused as to what is going on, calling them fireworks. He is nonchalant about the matter, brushing off the severity of the situation.

Tubbo is aware of Foolish building for Kinoko Kingdom. He asks Foolish if the motive would have been for Kinoko Kingdom’s benefit. Foolish denies as he is unaware of what goes down in Kinoko Kingdom.

Tubbo asks if Foolish has seen any strange books. Foolish asks to clarify. They narrow it down to a cooking book. Foolish says yes. Tubbo reiterates to Foolish how severe the situation is before declaring Foolish innocent. Foolish still believes that the nukes are fireworks.

This confirms that whoever stole the nukes was not online on the server at the time of the incident!

Tubbo and Foolish then begin to discuss the nukes and other Snowchester internal affairs, goofing off in the process.

Foolish cannot come up with a proper suspect list, only saying that anyone in Kinoko Kingdom is unlikely to be the culprit.

Tubbo assigns Foolish the job of reconnaissance.

Technoblade, Jack Manifold and Ranboo are ruled out as suspects.

Foolish suggests members of the Eggpire to be culprits while informing Tubbo of his invitation to the Red Banquet.

Tubbo tells Foolish to look for dead nature, meaning signs of radioactive fallout.

They then to continue to discuss the suspects list, who is on it and who is not on it before Foolish gets sent back to the interrogation room.

Immediately after, Foolish places Sam and HBomb as possible suspects. Tubbo agrees with Foolish’s proposal on HBomb being a suspect. The two of them set off for HBomb’s mansion.

Foolish expresses discontent at nuclear weapons being used as his builds may get caught in the crossfire.

However, the two see HBomb and Niki in the distance and chase after them. Foolish points out that the grass path to Niki’s underground city appears a bit dead. They travel to in Niki’s underground city and ask her where HBomb went. She express confusion at the remark and denies any affiliation, lying in the process.

Tubbo tells Foolish to guard the exits while Tubbo asks Niki where HBomb is. Niki comes up with an alibi involving L’Cast. The two end up leaving through the portal for a moment before entering again. They scout the city to find HBomb hiding within the walls.

The two begin speaking to Niki about HBomb. She still expresses confusion. HBomb pipes up and...

HBomb is playing a new character unrelated to HBomb himself.

This character has purple skin and speaks in a Russian accent. He does not have an official name as of now, so I will refer to this character as Pyotr until new information on the character is made available.

Foolish and Tubbo travel to HBomb’s mansion. Foolish brings up Connor as a possible suspect, coming up with a hypothesis that this was a group operation. They continue to rule out people as suspects.

Fundy is placed as a suspect.

They eventually make it to HBomb’s mansion where they report on the surroundings.

Foolish has a theory that the main culprit may have used HBomb for their whims via Cat Maid rules, framing him in the process.

The two comes to a consensus that HBomb is not responsible for stealing the nuke, although he may still be responsible for other parts of the operation.

Ponk is placed as a suspect.

The two leave HBomb’s mansion, travelling back to the spawn region, continuing to rule out people as suspects.

Punz and Eret are ruled out as suspects. Foolish confirm that no-one is obvious and is unsure in who could be the culprit.

The two travel to L’manburg to discuss past relations, bringing Wilbur up in the process. Tubbo shows Foolish the secret underground area of L’manburg. Tubbo remembers Wilbur’s library, eventually leading Foolish to Pogtopia via the tunnel.

Foolish witnesses the remains of Pogtopia and other nostalgic areas, with Tubbo telling and showing him the conflicting memories this brought him.

PARTS OF TECHNO’S OLD VAULT ARE STILL FULL OF VALUABLE ITEMS. THIS MAY BECOME USEFUL LATER!!!

Tubbo tells Foolish who built certain buildings prior to Foolish joining the server before taking him to a secret bunker Tubbo and Tommy used. They meet back at the interrogation room for the final time.

Ultimately, no suspects were ruled out despite a few people being discussed.

Foolish tries to come up with any theory that could lead to anywhere before Tubbo halts the investigation for the time being.

I based some of this AU--namely the concept of the Crucible and how magic is channeled--on the Carry On series by Rainbow Rowell. And Duck is trans in this, because any good wizarding school is inclusive.

After three years at Amnesty Academy, Duck is used to the objects being magically propelled through the air. But a ruler zipping through the air and smacking the back of his head is a new, unpleasant experience.

He tracks it to two chairs to his left, the new third year with the silver hair. He hasn’t even been here a day, what the fuck the is his problem?

“Hey, what the hell man?”

“You know very well what.”

“Uh, no I don’t, and I don’t appreciate bein hit with a fuckin ruler!”

“The maybe think before you insult someone next time!”

“I didn’t fuckin insult you! I don’t even know your name!”

“Ahem.” Ned, their Charms professor, looks down at them reproachfully, “gentlemen, while I know the review of Zone of Truth is rather dull, I’d appreciate it if you didn’t entertain yourselves with mindless conflict.”

“Sorry, Ned.” Duck mumbles, sending his pencil shooting below desk level to whack the other guy in the leg at the exact same moment he whips his pen at Duck’s hand.

“OW!”

Ned sighs, “I hate to do this, but-”

“Detention! Lovely, my first day here and I’m in trouble. Thank you so much, Duck Newton, for landing us here.”

“You started it!” He growls as they take their seats. God, he hopes this isn’t one of Woodbridge’s days.

“Huh, only two.” Mama wipes her boots on the mat, closes the door behind her, “Afternoon, Duck. And…”

“Indrid.” Says his nemesis, “It is nice to meet you Professor C-” he cocks his head, “you really prefer I call you ‘Mama?’”

“Yep. Never could get behind that more formal stuff. Let some of the first years call me ‘Ms. Mama’ if they really need to feel like they’re showin some deference.”

Mama is deputy Headmistress of Amnesty. The only reason she’s not fully in charge is that she’s not a witch and some families object to that. So The Quell technically runs the school while Mama does most of the actual day to day work. She also teaches a course of non-magic practical skills because, “some things you can’t magic your way out of. Like taxes.”

Duck loves her class and, while he doesn’t understand why someone would opt into this weirdness, he admires the guts it takes as a fifteen year old human to walk into a wizarding school and declare that there was plenty you could learn there even though you couldn’t so much as send a spark from your fingers.

As he and Indrid watch the clock tick down, Mama pulls a bag from her satchel. The contents are cookies, which she offers to each of them.

“Barclay tryin’ out new recipes?”

“Course he is. Kid is gonna be the best damn kitchen witch in the country by the time he graduates. Guess he’s plannin to spend the summer drivin around and learnin the food magic of different regions.” She smiles, “bet you’ll never guess who’s goin’ with him.”

“Joe?”

“Bingo. Apparently he wants to study niche cultural magic.”

Duck’s pretty sure there’s another motive; sharing a van bed with Barclay. It sounds fun, roving the country, discovering new places with someone handsome by your side.

All that’s by his side is a glower hiding behind red glasses.

“Mama? I, ah, would it be possible for me to leave five minutes early? I’m supposed to get my pairing from the Crucible tonight.”

The older woman looks between the two of them, “Better tell me how you landed here first. Ned just said it was an argument.”

“He threw a ruler at me outta nowhere.”

“It was not, you know what you said.”

“The last thing I said before you hit me was ‘“nah, man’ when Billy offered me a pizza roll from his lunch.”

Indrid goes still, “Oh. I, ah, I misheard you. I thought you said 'mothman.' I apologize. I ought to have given you the benefit of the doubt.”

He seems so suddenly downtrodden that Duck shrugs, “Yeah, you should have. But it ain’t the worst thing that’s happened to me here. Not by a long shot.”

“No kiddin” Mama leans back on the desk, “Two of you can go at five til.”

His evening turns uneventful after that; dinner, hanging out with Juno and Aubrey, half doing homework and half fucking around on his phone in his room (the agreement between the school and the government is that a long as the students don’t post vidoes of themselves doing sick stunts with magic, the government will ignore any explosions and/monsters in the vicinity of the school).

He’s never had a roommate; when the Crucible spat out his name in fire on his first day, there was no other name with it. Almost everyone else rooms in pairs or trios. So his belongings are strewn about the tiny cabin that makes up his home away from home. Which is why, when the door creaks open at ten p.m, he sits up and prepares to fire off a spell.

Indrid stands in the doorway, one bag over his shoulder and another in his hand. He looks tired.

“Hello, Duck. Ah, I guess that one is my bed, then.”

The class schedules for Amnesty are generated by the heart of the school itself. Indrid isn’t entirely sure what that means, but the heart must not be terribly creative. It stuck him in divination class. He’s been seeing the future since he was five, managing it with his drawings since he was eight. Even the professor has no idea what to do with him, since the images come in like a garbled T.V signal when he uses a crystal ball and the cup shattered when he tried to read tea leaves.

At least Barclay gave him a conciliatory caramel while they swept up the shards. It made him feel a bit better, though whether that’s due to enchantment or Barclay being exceedingly good at cooking is hard to say.

And now he has to go to “Magical Weaponry.” Magical Defense he understands; there are still lots of malicious forces out there, or even just everyday evils that it’s good to be able to ward against. Plus, Vincent is a good professor, enthusiastic and understanding.

Professor Minerva is just as enthusiastic but twice as loud. This is their first day in the actual gym, as opposed to at a blackboard, and his visions suggest it’s going to go poorly for him. As it should; he’s not a fighter, he’s a disaster.

At Amnesty, magic is channeled through objects. Most people use wands or their hands but some, like Aubrey, use jewelry (a necklace from her mother) or another accessory.

Duck Newton uses a sword. Or he’s trying to. The sword seems to be winning.

“Exert your will on him, Duck Newton, he answers to you!”

“I answeeer to only the capable.”

“Shut up, Beacon.” Duck adjusts his grasp, but nothing happens until he drops the sword and sends a spell through his fingers. The target explodes. Indrid suddenly feels a bit better about his own probable performance.

Duck notices him, indicates the practice area next to him is clear. While they started off poorly, his roommate is doing his best to demonstrate southern hospitality. He invites Indrid to eat with him, helps him when his visions offer no help in navigating the grounds, and even lent him a blue and green shirt (Amnesty's colors) for his first Spirit Day. Duck is the best thing to happen to him in his first month here.

By the time class is over, they have six broken targets, a shredded mat, and a knife that is now a very confused frog between them. They manage to laugh about it, even as Duck scoops up the amphibian and tucks him into his shirt pocket.

It’s then that Indrid realizes he has a crush.

“You comin to the game tonight?” Juno measures her sapling.

“Assumin nothin comes up and nobody’s tryin to kill me, you know I’ll be there.” He loves cheering Juno on during her soccer games (hey, not everything has to be magic based, even at a wizarding school).

“Drat.”

The hissed frustration draws his attention to the far end of the work table. Indrid is trying to coax his Venus Flytraps to perk up, but they remain brown and limp.

“Need some help?”

“Please, as you clearly know what you’re doing.” Indrid tilts his head towards the sapling pine tree Duck is working on. If he does his growing spells right, he’ll be able to take it home as a Christmas Tree during winter break.

“You tend to picture words or, uh,pictures when you do your spells?”

“Images work best. The trouble is that the futures sometimes make it difficult for me to picture a spell clearly.”

“What if I try describing how I’d see it and you picture what I say?”

“It’s worth a try.” Indrid closes his eyes.

“Okay. Think about the roots drawin water up from the soil, about the traps absorbin nutrients from prey. That brown is goin green as they do, they’re stems are growin stronger…” he grins as the plant turns bright green, it’s mouths open, “hey, ‘Drid, look”

“Oh!” Indrid flaps his hands, “it worked! Now I can keep them healthy and big andohno, nono not again.”

The table cracks and collapses as the plant turns gigantic, blocking out the light from the greenhouse roof.

“Holy fuck, that’s great!”

“Language, sport, but I agree.” Thacker, the head of the magical Horticulture classes, whistles as he looks the plant up and down, “this is mighty impressive Indrid. Wonder if we could use it on some pumpkins come fall…”

“I don’t recommend it, unless you want them to chase people.” Indrid points to one of the heads, which is swaying in the air and lowering closer to him. It snaps and he leaps back, falling to a pile of potting soil. Thacker raises his walking stick and the flytrap returns to its proper size.

Duck helps Indrid up, but his friend stays quiet through the end of class and on the walk back to their room.

“You know it ain’t anythin to be ashamed of, right?” Duck flips on the light, “we all fuck up spells now and then. Hell, Aubrey is on track to be the best spellcaster this school’s ever seen and she still has trouble.”

“But mine go haywire constantly” Indrid flops, dejected, onto his bed, “forget mastering my powers, I’ll be lucky if I graduate able to keep them in check. If I graduate at all.” His hand searches the bed blindly; Duck sets the weighted, plush bat into so Indrid can set it on his chest.

“What do you mean?”

“I’ve never lasted more than a year at a magical school. Or a non-magical one. I started at Mt Vernon when I was fifteen. Tried Deep Hollow and Shasta the year after that. I’m powerful but I can’t seem to channel it well, and three different schools decided I was more trouble than I was worth.”

“Bullshit.” Duck rests a hand on Indrid’s knee, “you’re strugglin with somethin; that means you need more help, not less. And if anyone gets it into their heads to kick you outta Amnesty, I’ll raise a goddamn ruckus.”

Indrid chuckles, quiet and disbelieving.

“I’m serious. You know Aubrey and them would side with me, and Joe knows school policy well enough he could probably find a reason why them tryin to get rid of you was against the rule.”

“Thank you.” Indrid’s smile is a rare flower, fragile and stunning.

“You want one of those calm-down caramels Barclay made?”

“Please.”

Duck grabs the box from the cabinet of their little kitchenette, then snags a Coke and a pineapple soda from the fridge. Indrid is no longer horizontal, is instead sitting with his back to the wall so Duck has space to join him.

Under the fizz of fresh bubbles, his friend murmurs, ‘“Have people really tried to kill you?”

“Yep. Someone sent an assassin after me my first year, and there was a Dire wolf on the grounds last winter that was clearly locked on to my scent. Perk of bein a Chosen One.” He grumbles as he swigs his drink.

“...Who on earth sends an assassin after a fifteen year old?”

“Right?! Fuck if I know, they never got any information out of the guy. Fuckin prophecy I swear, I didn’t even want these powers, let alone to be some kind of hero.”

“I sympathize.” Indrid rests his head on Duck’s shoulder, “there are prophecies around my birth as well.”

Duck clunks their bottles together, “To bein’ fucked over by stuff we can’t control.”

Indrid drains his soda, then perks up, “Oh! Oh dear, you should go if you want to be there for Juno’s match.”

“Come with me?” Duck can’t get the image of the two of them sharing a giant pretzel while smushed thigh to thigh on the bleachers out of his head.

His friend grins, “Of course.”

Duck hoped, after his not-great time in middle school, that a magic academy would be asshole free. But no, there are assholes everywhere, and these ones have even more tools for tormenting their targets. He’s never been one, nor have any of his friends. The one time someone tried to bully Barclay, Dani sicked three spectral hummingbirds on them until they apologized.

Indrid, odd and new, is an easy target, though he seems to hold his own just fine (and his proximity to the most powerful witch in school does scare off many potential antagonists). But three guys in their Magical Defense class have zeroed in on him.

They’re standing in line to practice against an evil eye when Indrid’s glasses, the ones he doesn’t take off even when he sleeps, hit the floor by Duck’s feet. Duck scrambles to grab them before they get stepped on, wondering why everyone is making such a fuss. Then he turns and backs up in alarm.

An eight foot tall moth creature is where Indrid should be, red eyes wide and claws clicking together anxious.

“Who let that thing in here?” Someone yells from behind him.

Indrid’s antenna flatten.

“Fuck, wasn’t expecting him to be that big a freak” one of the bullies scoffs.

Black wings twitch.

“Newton, give him the glasses back so we don’t have to look at him!”

Indrid trills, upset, and leaps into the air at the same moment Aubrey yells, “that’s enough” and Vincent shouts a reminder about no flames in enclosed spaces and also detention for you three. Duck is to busy climbing out the window Indrid flew through to pick up the details.

One two-story fall later, he’s chasing a dark shape into the Monongahela forest. While the parts of the woods near his hometown of Kepler are non-enchanted, this chunk is magic down to the moss (he plans to write his final year project on how those halves of forest mesh on an ecological level). One of the worst aspects of the enchanted portions is their tendency to re-shape around travelers. His usual way around this is to have an unwavering sense of where he’s going and pretend the woods are giving him an unchanging path to get there. But that trick does fuck-all when he doesn’t know his destination.

After two hours of searching he’s no closer to finding Indrid, it’s getting dark, and he’s debating heading back to the school for help. He hasn’t been this deep in the woods since he fled the Dire Wolf, and he knows the deeper you go into the trees, the wilder the magic becomes. Bad news for him, even worse for his friend who's out there somewhere, upset and alone.

Eight gigantic eyes glitter at him from the dirt, and he quickly rearranges who has it worse right now.

Throwing a burst of light into the trapdoor spiders eyes buys him enough time to bolt to a tree and climb. As soon as it crawls free of its burrow he freezes; if he’s remembering right, they use vibrations to locate prey.

Fuck, that thing is the size of a VW Beatle. Why is that even a thing? No spider needs to be this big!

In spite of his stillness, it spies him and sets its forelimbs on the tree-trunk. There’s nothing else for it; he draws Beacon, pictures the spider shrinking, and casts his spell.

A soft crunch of leaves signals it hitting the ground, now an unremarkable size for an arachnid. Just as he steps down a branch, a second trap door opens and an enraged spider bursts out, looking for it’s friend. When it can’t find it, it turns and snaps its mandibles at Duck. This time, Beacon does nothing, no matter how Duck commands and curses as his eight-legged doom gets closer.

A crackle of electricity and then this spider disappears as well. On the other side of the trunk, red eyes regard him with worry, “are you hurt?”

“Nah, all in one piece thanks to you.” He holds out his hand, “you wanna head back?”

“Yes, please.” Indrid flaps to the ground, Duck following him on foot and then turning them towards campus, “you did not need to come look for me.”

“Course I did, not gonna let my friend get swallowed up by the forest. Oh, here” he holds out the red glasses, “you want these back?”

“Not just yet. That is, if this form is not too alarming to you.”

Duck takes in the glossy feathers, the charming ruff, the way the face is still obviously Indrid yet excitingly new, “I’m good.”

Light flickers from black claws, stars and flowers spinning out with ease, “It’s so much easier when I’m like this. I never foresaw my disguise charm being an issue, but the older I’ve gotten the more it seems to influence my ability to control my spells. But, well, you saw how people reacted. Even you were startled.”

“In my defense, I thought you’d been eaten by, well, you.” Duck casts the same spell, vines of light chasing the red flowers, “I’m still sorry, though. You ain’t horrible like this, ‘Drid; you’re fuckin stunnin. Never seen anyone as incredible as you.”

Indrid stops, looking down at him, “Do you truly mean that?”

Duck rises on his toes, pecking his cheek, “Yeah, I do.”

The Halloween Formal is the most elaborate event at Amnesty. Indrid feels that if there’s any day he’s within his rights to be in his true form, it’s when everyone else is dressed as monsters.

He doesn’t have a date. He thought Duck was in the same predicament. Then his friend left before he was half-done grooming his feathers, saying he needed to get flowers for his hot date.

Ah well. At least Indrid will get to see him there and spend some time with his friends.

He checks his reflection in the gleaming black walls, orange and purple lights glowing and jack’o lanterns floating above his head. He adjusts his robes, the nice red ones his father sent him, and prepares to enter the ballroom.

“Hold up.”

When he turns, Duck is standing there in his black dress shirt and green tie, looking for all the world like he’s alone.

“You got one more thing to put on” He holds out a bracelet of flowers, sized to slip perfectly over Indrid’s hand. There are matching flowers pinned to one side of Duck’s hair.

“Oh. Oh my. You really-”

Duck uses a small spell to bend Indrid into a kiss; it’s a bit messy, since their mouths aren’t meant to fit together, but Indrid would not trade it for all the magic in the world.

“Yeah, ‘Drid, I really do.” With that, Duck offers his elbow and they walk arm in arm into the great hall.

Dear Lee - Zuko x Reader

Summary: After being rescued from prison, you discover that you fell in love with a lie.

“Hand me the prison keys.” Zuko ordered to the semi-conscious warden that he found in front of his uncle's cell. 

Warden Poon was barely able to open his eyes due to the hard confrontation he had with Iroh.

“But, Prince Zuko…”

“Just do it.” Zuko didn’t even try to use a calm tone this time, even threatening Poon with one of his fists on fire.

With no other choice, the warden handed the bunch of keys to the prince. He no longer wanted any conflicts, mainly because he didn’t have enough strength to do so and also because he knew that his firebending was inferior.

With the keys in hand, Zuko began his plan, starting to free the remaining prisoners from the tower. Initially, his intention was just to free his uncle, but as he had failed to do so, he decided not to let the opportunity go in vain.

Most of the people who were there weren't dangerous, but very prestigious. Big business owners, high-ranking military men, former rulers. Even his uncle was only there and not in the Boiling Rock, as he was part of the Royal Family. Fortunately, thanks to this foolish choice, Iroh had benefited from the average security prison to escape.

When Zuko finally thought he had just opened all the cells, he came across one that was different from the others. It wasn’t surrounded by iron bars, but by large metal plates with a small window in the middle, apparently where meals were placed. Not even his uncle had been put in such a bad place. Could someone really be there?

With some caution, the firebender turned the key in the lock and subtly opened the door, placing his head inside the small gap he had opened.

“Hello?”

Unfortunately, Zuko identified someone lying in the back of the dim cell. 

And that someone was you. 

But since you hadn’t responded to his call, he was uncertain if you had heard him. So, the prince decided to enter the cubicle and shook you gently, trying to awake you.

“Hey. Wake up.”

It all seemed too confusing in your head when you started to wake up. A familiar voice rang in your ears and a small amount of light illuminated the cell, but the brightness irritated your eyes since you hadn't been dealing with it for weeks.

“Hey.” He called you again and then you finally remembered who that voice belonged to.

“Lee?” You questioned in an uncertain but hopeful tone.

“Y/n?” Hearing your name coming from his lips filled you with happiness.

Without restraining yourself, you wrapped the prince in a tight hug and he reciprocated you a bit shyly since he didn't expect that demonstration of affection, much less to find you in a place like that. But you didn't care about his shyness. Just having him in your arms was good enough.

“I'm so happy that you're okay, Lee.”

You called him Lee again. After all, he was Lee to you.

For you, he was the guy from the teahouse you used to go to after your earthbending training. The guy who had caught your interest so suddenly that when you noticed you would show up to see him even when there was no reason to.

For you, he was the guy who made you laugh even when he didn't mean anything funny. He had such a weird and grumpy way of looking at things that you couldn't help but think it was cute.

For you, he was the guy who had taught you a bit of swordsmanship and when he wielded those double swords, you were even more attracted to him. He always seemed to dance with them. And he made it look so easy when you knew it wasn't.

For you, he was the guy you had your first date with. In fact, you weren't even sure if it was a date, but you always treated the memory with the amount of affection you think it deserved.

You couldn't forget when you had dinner with him and he yelled at one of the waiters, apparently a little embarrassed by a silly comment. You also couldn't forget how you tried to hold his hand and he allowed it, walking with you like that for a while. You couldn't forget the fountain where you took him to and how the candles magically seemed to light around it. It was the perfect place and the perfect time. You could almost feel that he wanted to kiss you just as much as you wanted to kiss him. And suddenly, he left, leaving you with a coupon for the teahouse he worked at.

Shortly after that small step in your relationship, you graduated as part of the Dai Li. You wished you could protect your people and you felt that that was the right way to do it. You had grown up in the Lower Ring and aspired to bring some justice to this region. It is a pity that you got it all wrong and chose the worst way to achieve it.

Before joining the other agents, you had a last cup of tea at your favorite spot. You already wore the typical Dai Li costume and you expected the farewell to be kinda hard. But to your surprise, that day, Lee didn't show up, just his uncle. You said goodbye to Mushi and asked him to deliver the message, but it always hurt you that Lee wasn't there to hear it in person.

So, you met again. And you had so much to say to your dear Lee.

“Why didn't you come to say g-”

“Not now.” Zuko interrupted you a little roughly, but it wasn’t intentional. He just was in a hurry. “I’m sorry. We need to go before they find us.”

He cautiously broke away from your embrace and lifted you, pulling you by your hand. However, you were so weak from the hard days in prison that you almost fell backward. Fortunately, he reacted quickly and held you tightly by the waist so you wouldn't fall.

“What’s wrong?” Zuko asked worriedly.

“Nothing. Let's go.”

You broke free from him politely, trying to prove that you were well enough to walk alone and get out of there on your own, but deep down, you knew it was all just a lie. You had been tortured during so many days that you didn't even know how you could still speak. You didn't even know how you could still pronounce the word hope. Perhaps it was the fact that you were from the Earth Kingdom. Your people were known for being enduring and strong and so were you. You had to go on despite everything.

“Let me help you.” Zuko offered again but you denied.

However, when you started to leave the cell for the first time in weeks, your body again lost its balance. You were so thrilled to finally be able to touch something other than cold metal walls that you didn't look at your steps. Until warm hands held you again.

“Please, I just want to help.” He practically begged this time and you could feel his hands tightening around you. 

“Fine.” You said it reluctantly, knowing that he wouldn't take no for an answer.

Zuko was pleased to finally get your consent and cautiously, he put one of your arms over his neck, supporting your weight against his body. The prince could easily carry you on his back, but he knew you were a proud person and would be offended if you were treated that way. He wanted to give you the proper respect. After all, you were a fighter just like him.

“Now, can you tell me what happened?”

Zuko wanted to ask that question since he found you in that cold, dark cell. It never crossed his mind that you could be so close to him and he never noticed. And if it weren't for his change of heart, you might have rotten there and he would never know.

He wanted to know why you were in that tower since you weren’t a relatively important person.

He wanted to know why you seem to be a thousand times more mistreated than the other prisoners he had released. You could barely walk without stumbling and that didn't match the determined person he met at Ba Sing Se.

He couldn't help but look at the injured extension of your body. All he could see was a large number of bruises, burns, and marks. You looked like a macabre work of art and probably the artist of this work had a mind as macabre as.

He wanted to ask so much. Zuko was immensely concerned about your condition, but at the same time, he was more concerned with how he would say he wasn’t who you thought he was.

“Fire Nation happened.” You finally responded sarcastically. “Do I really need to tell you that, Lee?”

Zuko didn't dare to say anything. Every time he heard his false name, everything seemed to get worse. So he decided to go down the stairs with you in silence. If he could take care of your safety by pretending to be Lee for a while, then he would do it.

“Why are you wearing these disgusting clothes?” The red suit with golden details annoyed you a lot since it looked a lot like the clothes of that woman you despised so much.

Zuko remained silent. You couldn't help but be irritated by his attitude, but you knew you were dependent on him at that moment. You could either adapt to his sudden silence or return to your unhappy cell. Although even if you wanted to return, Zuko would never let you go back.

You finally made it out of the tower and your eyes shone with excitement. How long have you been since you breathe some fresh air?  You were so happy that you would have jumped, screamed, and even danced a little if some guards hadn't shown up.

You quickly let go of Zuko and placed yourself in front of him.

In your mind, you were stronger than him. You were the person who had been blessed with the ability of bending. You were also the person who had been trained to be an elite fighter and serve Ba Sing Se, even it was all a big fat lie. You couldn't change the fact that you joined Dai Li and were manipulated to do bad things, but you could use your strength to do things differently from now. And so you would protect Lee.

You took a rigid stance and levitated some blocks of earth. You were ready to attack until you hear them communicate with Lee.

“Prince Zuko!” One of them spoke up trying to communicate with the man behind you, but that didn't make any sense. He wasn't this Zuko guy.

A woman ran towards you with fire daggers in her hands, but that didn't make you back off. You knew you were superior and even if you weren't, you would force yourself to be.

When you tried to throw the rocks at her, you were stopped, with your hand being held behind your back.

Only one person would be close enough to you to act that fast.

“Lee, what are you doing?” You tried to get loose in vain. 

“I’m sorry.” Zuko whispered.

Before you could answer or try to earthbend something with your feet, Zuko threw you over one of his shoulders, almost like you were a sack of potatoes.

"Stop."

You didn't understand why he told you to stop until you realized that the order wasn't for you. He was talking with the guards.

“But, prince Zuko, she’s the Dai Li agent that princess Azula-”

“I don’t care. I’m ordering you to stop.”

You couldn't understand anything anymore. Why did Lee seem to have authority over those guards? Why weren't you being attacked? Why were they constantly calling him prince Zuko?

“I’m afraid we can’t, Your Highness.” The guard with fire daggers replied.

And then, a battle of flames started.

You were outnumbered. You knew that Lee was good with swords, but that would be insufficient. You would have to fight. Only you could defend the two of you.

"Lee, please." You practically begged, pulling his shirt with as much strength that you could. 

"I'm sorry, Y/n. For everything." And when he started to firebend, your heart shattered into a thousand pieces.

Lee never existed.

Battles of Mackinac Island (1812) & (1814):�� Fights for control of the Old Northwest of America and Great Lakes during the War  of 1812.

The War of 1812 (1812-1815) between the US and UK is sometimes cited as a “forgotten” war.  However, that would be an inaccurate description and depends on the participants you ask.  Remembered in the United States as a “Second War of Independence” it was treated as sort of a victory due to the lack of territorial change and the major victories such as the Battles of Lake Erie, Baltimore, Plattsburgh and New Orleans.  In Canada, at the time a British colony, its remembered for its role in forging an Canadian national identity and the repelling of repeated American invasions.  In Britain, its little remembered other than as a sideshow for the Napoleonic Wars.  Meanwhile, for the Native American tribes that fought on the side of the British its largely remembered as a devastating loss that lead to permanent displacement and the consolidation of American expansion east of the Mississippi River.  The war was in fact a military and political stalemate and had multiple causes and was fought by participants who were ill prepared for the management of executing a war at that time and was marked by repeated blunders and tended to favor a defensive over offensive strategy between both sides.

Background:

-1781 with the American victory at the Battle of Yorktown in Virginia saw an end to major combat in the American Revolution.  1783 saw Britain finally recognize America’s independence.  Anticipating America as a major commercial trading partner.  It sought to offer generous and lenient terms to the 1783 Treaty of Paris which included granting the US all territory east of the Mississippi River and south of the Great Lakes, an area sparsely populated by Europeans at the time and held a variety of many Native American tribes.  This territory was considered the Northwest of the United States at the time and from 1787-1803 was referred to the as the (US) Northwest Territory and encompassed all of the modern US states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois & Wisconsin.

-The area was important to the Europeans and later European Americans for its role in the fur trade Great Lakes fishing and geopolitical control over North American continent.  

-Following the 1780′s until the time of the War of 1812, American settlement in the area grew but remained sparse and relegated to a few scattered settlements with Native American tribes sometimes friendly and sometimes hostile to the United States residing alongside the new settlers.  The fur trade remained dominant in terms of economic interest.  The British also maintained a military presence in the area despite the Treaty of Paris handing over the territory to the Americans.  

-Tensions with the British backed Native Americans and European American settlers boiled over into the Northwest Indian War (1785-1795) which resulted in an US victory at the 1794 Battle of Fallen Timbers.  American settlement into Ohio Country was ascertained after this point and the British withdrew their minimal forces in the area (Ohio).  Though tensions remained, due in part to some British presence remaining in the sparsely settled Northwest.

-The other major development of the 1790′s and onward was the French Revolution and later Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century which grew out of that.  The United States had to determine its course of action relative to the greater European conflict between France and the various older monarchies they fought, namely Britain.

-Under President George Washington, the US adopted a stance of neutrality that sought trade with both Britain and France.  The Jay Treaty he had signed with Britain was very controversial but Washington saw economic prosperity for America rather than war as its ultimate goal.  Neither France nor Britain responded well to neutral American trade with its rival.  The French Republic and the US fought a limited low level conflict called the Quasi War (1798-1800) which ultimately ended in no victory for either side and the old Franco-American alliance of the Revolutionary period gave way to a new one based more on free-trade.  Coupled with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 which expanded American owned territory to the Trans-Mississippi, the British saw these developments as undesirable.

-From 1792-1815 aside from a previous 14 month peace Britain and France remained at war.  For the most part Britain dominated the seas with the Royal Navy while France under Napoleon Bonaparte dominated the European continent.  Britain maintained blockades of France as well as providing mostly subsidies to its Continental partners in Austria, Prussia, Russia and others rather than provide many ground troops since Britain possessed a small but professional army.

-Only after Napoleon’s invasion of Portugal and subsequent betrayal and conquest of Spanish ally did Britain provide a large long term ground troop presence on the continent, fighting in the Iberian theater’s Peninsular War (1807-1814).

-During the course of these events America’s merchant fleet doubled and became the world’s largest neutral merchant fleet.  This caused resentment in Britain who felt it might be eclipsed by the US eventually in terms of trade.  

-The US was not untested during this time having fought the First Barbary War against Tripoli (Libya) by using a naval bombardment combined with a US Marine and Arab-Greek mercenary force to defeat the Barbary pirates at the Battle of Derna.  A treaty was signed freeing all American sailors taken as prisoner and made slaves by the Muslim pirates of Tripoli.  The war demonstrated American power projection overseas for the first time and was noted by the European powers of the day.

-However, the French rivalry with Britain drove most events in and around America’s relations with Europe and the practice of impressment by both the French and British navies caused real ire in the US.  Impressment was the force pressing into service of sailors to work aboard British or French ships and it included the stopping and seizure of neutral American military and merchant vessels and their crews.  The British practiced it more than the French and Britain argued that any trade that benefitted France in war time was not to be permitted.  This angered the American government and public at large.  

-Additionally, Britain argued they were looking for either runaway British subjects on the ship or refused to recognize British citizenship being renounced in favor of American citizenship and in their eyes were simply fulfilling Admiral Horatio Nelson’s famous quip “England expects that every man will do his duty.”

-America saw this as a clear violation and illegal of the rights of neutral nations.  President Thomas Jefferson responded with the Embargo Act to in his mind hurt European trade to the point they would ease up on America and cease impressment.  It did not work and in the end hurt American trade more.

-By 1812, under President James Madison, the push for war in the US reached fever pitch in some quarters (outside of New England).  The US could no longer stand for British impressment which included taking Americans who were never British subjects along with the continued British support for Native American aggression in the Northwest territory now known as the Michigan & Indiana Territories.  Britain had promised to sponsor a Native American buffer state in these territories in the event of a successful war with America.  They would also provide weapons, men and goods to support this effort as they had in the past.  To answer this support was Tecumseh’s Confederacy, a mix of Native American tribes under the leadership of a Shawnee leader named Tecumseh.

1812: War is declared and the Capture of Fort Mackinac.

-In June 1812, the US declared war and indeed war might have been avoided on Britain’s side had their Prime Minister Spencer Perceval not been assassinated at the same time in May 1812.  Perceval had hoped for a diplomatic resolution to tensions with America, knowing Britain could ill afford war in the Americas.

-America declared war but had a small regular army due to a longstanding reliance on the militia system which had existed since colonial times in the 17th century.  Their plans involved invading Canada but due to the understanding that militias in some states might only operate locally were not well coordinated and faced many logistical issues to coordinate.

-News of the war’s outbreak reached Britain’s Canadian colonies prior to Britain itself so it required the small number of British troops supported by local Canadian militias Native American auxiliaries to fight the war on Britain’s behalf.

-Issac Brock, a Major General in charge of the defense of Upper Canada (Ontario) sought to make early gains to offset the American plans at the war’s outset, one plan involved capturing Mackinac Island in the Great Lakes due to its strategic location.

-Mackinac Island is a relatively small island located near the Straits of Mackinac where Lakes Michigan and Huron meet in the Great Lakes chain.  Today it is located between off the lake shore southeast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and near the Lower Peninsula.

-Mackinac was a place of spiritual significance to the Ojibwe and other Algonquian speaking peoples of the Great Lakes region.  Said to be the home of Gitche Manitou or creator spirit.  It also became a vital trading center for the French and later British fur traders in the region.  It was ceded to the Americans following the 1783 Treaty of Paris and held a small fur trading outpost and fort by the time of war’s outbreak in 1812.

-Brock dispatched a force of 600 regular British troops, Canadian militiamen, frontiersmen and Native Americans to surprise the American force on Mackinac.  Due to Mackinac’s remoteness and other more pressing factors, news of war’s declaration in June 1812 had not yet made it to the island by the following month.

-Fort Mackinac occupied a limestone ridge overlooking the harbor on the southern end of Mackinac Island.  It faced several deficiencies despite holding a commanding view.  The force was small to begin with and only had seven cannons for its defense with only one capable of reaching attacking ships in the harbor.  To make matters worse, they acquired their water supply from a spring fed on higher ground above the fort which meant their water supply was easy to cutoff in the event of siege

-Roberts having captured a fur trader named Michael Dousman who had been dispatched by American commander Porter Hanks to investigate reports of unusual activity at nearby St. Joseph’s Island was able to get valued information from his new captured informant on the condition of Mackinac’s defenses.  Having learned the Americans were unaware of war’s declaration and now having a layout of their defenses Roberts implemented a plan.

 -On early morning July 17th The British/Native American force would land on the northwest side of the island at a spot to be aptly called later, British Landing, some two miles from the fort.  They landed on the shoreline and marched through the small road and woods through the island’s center taking high ground above the fort.  Awaking the few villagers on the island they removed them from harms way and placed a cannon on the ridge above the fort at dawn and fired a single shot to warn the Americans of their presence.  They sent a flag of truce to Hanks demanding surrender of the fort or face a siege.  Hanks complied without firing a single shot and surrendered the whole garrison as he feared resistance would lead to a massacre from the Native American contingent.  Having captured the fort without a fight, the British now controlled the whole island and the area around it.

-Roberts released the American garrison on the promise it would not fight for duration of the war.  The permanent residents-fur traders and a few farmers were offered the choice to swear an oath of allegiance to the British Crown or they would be allowed to leave, most took up the oath and carried on with their business.  The British did not loot any homes, resided in the fort and paid for some food to their Native American allies while the regular soldiers were fed on rations intended for the US garrison kept in government storehouses.

-Most of the Native Americans contingent left, returning to either Wisconsin or to help Tecumseh fight the Americans elsewhere. Meanwhile, the British consolidated their position on the island.

1814: Battle of Mackinac Island

-The British also captured Fort Detroit and it with that fort captured, the Americans could not attempt to retake Mackinac Island.  In 1813, the Americans had a change in fortune from the disasters of 1812.  They won the definitive naval battle on the Great Lakes, defeating the Royal Navy in the Battle of Lake Erie.  They also recaptured Detroit and pursued the retreating British into Canada catching up with them at the Battle of the Thames where they killed Tecumseh and shattered his Native American coalition as a threat once and for all.
