No, but really.
I had my own half-written post about this in my drafts already, but the hilarious thing about Sizz Lorr is that all available evidence suggests that he is a) a GREAT employer, and b) probably a pretty chill guy in general.
It's just the one completely unhinged little war criminal the Empire saddled him with that he's a raging asshole. And that my dears is what we call protagonist bias.
Even with Zim, there are a significant number of moments where Zim's... Zimness catches him off-guard enough that his intimidating demeanor slips, which just makes me think that 'sadistic, domineering fry-warden' is PROBABLY not his most natural state
This guy is ad-libbing his whole damn routine and it's just Zim's terrible luck that he happens to be fairly good at it.
*Wakes up in a cold sweat* Hold up, if Sizz-Lorr was "trapped, alone, WITHOUT HELP" during the previous Foodening...
That means he either had no employees other than Zim at the time OR HE LET ALL HIS EMPLOYEES TAKE THE FOODENING OFF what a man
Sizz-Lorr may he tough but between that and him casually letting the resisty eat at his restaurant, he's pretty based actually
#invader zim#sizz lorr#iz posting#meta#my meta#dealing with zim was so far out of this mans paygrade i swear#'take on an exile' they said 'its cheap exploitable labor' they said#not for nothing but for as miserable as zim was on foodcourtia i can only imagine made everyone elses daily life just as difficult#working with him under any circumstance is simply a nightmare#sizz lorr had no way of knowing what he was signing himself on to#hes just trying to run a restaurant here and instead hes setting up explosive devices and going on interstellar chases for space terrorists#AND AFTER ALL THAT IT DOESNT EVEN WORK OUT IN HIS FAVOR#give the man a break

A personal argument in favor of transgression in fandom spaces

Marquis de Sade (1740-1814), would he write Wincest, Reylo and Zadr fanfiction with obsessive yandere mafia boss tropes if he was alive today?
It's so weird for me to come to fandom at my current age (30) and with my background, I was not a very online teenager, I had an art tumblr growing up, but that was very far from the whole Superwholock bubble and discourse. My first interests reading were classic literature and stuff from school and Harry Potter for little bit, then Tolkien for a long time, then science-fiction and transgressive literature, starting with A Clockwork Orange, then Piano Teacher, Bret Easton Ellis, Yukio Mishima, Dennis Cooper etc. I'm a sensitive traumatized person (for reasons I won't explain) and I've been depressed and anxious most of my life, experiencing disturbing intrusive thoughts, so the themes in fiction that interested me were always the things I was most afraid and uncomfortable with in real life, traumatic events close to me that I had no other way to explore and no one else to talk to about. In a way transgressive art was always there for me, showing me how evil thoughts and experiences are not an exclusive thing, not a burden I must carry alone, those artists and writers also cared and thought about those things in meaningful ways, that was a relief. Slowly and with therapy I learned to organize my intrusive thought as creative thoughts, ideas I could use to paint or write, and this really really helped me.
The thing is I started to get interested in comic books too, this by the age of 20, reading them by myself and sharing my ideas with some close friends who didn't care about comics, but would listen to me. I started being active in fandom spaces recently, almost ten years after I started reading comics and, oh boy, is this a different environment. Where the morally ambiguous, weird and transgressive are very close to forbidden, people are divided among anti and proshippers, and exploring heavy themes and disturbing scenarios is frowned upon. I recently read about an Invader Zim artist who was bullied and had to abandon their blog due to attacks to their weird art. As if Comte de Lautréamont, Marquis de Sade, Georges Bataille and I don't know, the fucked up passages of the Bible never existed, to free us from the closed-mindness. It's all so backwards, restrictive and conservative. Not the fact that some people do not want to engage with these themes, you have the right to do so, but we accomplish nothing by judging and hating on people who want to talk about these subjects, who understand the human nature as a complex experience not imune to evil, malice, bizarre impulses and desires.
Talking about these things is different from supporting and agreeing with them, but they are a part of our existence and sometimes expressing awful experiences through art is the only escape someone have. To ignore the worst in us is a conservative attitude that idealizes a perfect conduct and ideal way of being, an hygienist perception of what it means to be human, with a lack of nuance and complexity that is just boring on top of being a form of censorship.

Aliens + Whump 👽
Alien whumpee who gets captured by a scientist who wants to study them.
Alien whumpee who crash lands in the woods, and is found by a crazed conspiracy theorist who wants to keep them trapped in their home all for themself, scared the government is going to take them away.
Alien whumpee who crash lands in the woods, and is found by an alien enthusiast. They help tend to their wounds while learning all about alien biology. Maybe caretaker is also a mechanic and tries to help repair their ship to get them home.
Alien whumpee who's the size of an apple. A group of immature teens put it in a shoe box and take it home. Maybe there's multiple. You know that Hamster Hell YouTube video? Yeah, basically that but with small aliens. (TW: claymation animal abuse if you click the link)
Alien whumpee who's a part of an invasion program that's incredibly taxing. The training program treats them like living weapons, who's only goal is to compete the invasion for their leaders. They're nothing more than discardable drones. Perhaps the alien successfully infiltrates human culture, and in the midst of their deception they get a little too lost in the role. Is this still a part of the act, or have they come to care for these humans they're supposed to be invading? Perhaps the humans are much more thoughtful than their own. Perhaps Earth has become their home... (I'm absolutely obsessed with an Invader Zim AU of this idea you guys)
Alien whumper who kidnaps one person from each planet they invade, collecting various species like they're trophies.
Alien whumper who gets obsessed with a particular person from their recent invasion, deciding to take them back to their home planet to keep them as a pet.
Alien whumper who's job it is to travel space and study planets' most intelligent species. They're do this in less than ethical ways, and, unbeknownst to their boss, may smuggle one back to continue their studies off the clock.
Alien caretaker who finds themself having to care for a creature (be it human or otherwise) that they aren't too sure of. There's a language barrier, and they have no idea what biology the creature has. But they have to try.

(Shaking and frothing whilst saying this)
Human Zim is a sickly fucked up kid who’s been through the foster system multiple times. Gir is his little brother who is not really related to him but they met as foster kids and though Zim will say Gir can’t live without him it’s really the other way around.
Prior to being in the foster system, he was a gifted kid doing a variety of activities and excelling in science, math, etc.
One way or another the matriarch of his rather large family, Miyuki, dies. Whether it’s from a car crash or some mishap in another area, her death is very much blamed on him leaving him with no family who wants to take over his care.
Zim did manage to stay with his cousin red for a short time but that didn’t last long.
His health has deteriorated rapidly since miyukis death, he is kind of shit with school now, not that he’s even trying.
Dib comes to earth possibly when Zim’s around 12 of course. Dib isn’t exactly massively tall at this point but he’s a bit tall for an irken his age. He convinced his superior and mentor, tallest membrane to send him to some backwater planet where dib can focus on research. In reality, membrane is just trying to keep him out of trouble. Dib is his protege, a direct clone that membrane created of himself in hopes of guiding the next tallest.
Dib doesn’t give a fuck about being a tallest or commanding anyone, he’s more concerned with the study of lower level species and paranormal anomalies than weapons studies, or tactical battle planning. the irken empire regards as meaningless.
Dib is sent with his babysitter, Gaz.
When dib first lands he ends up meeting Zim who happened to be in the midst of running off with gir from his current foster home.
A little fight here, some choice words and Zim being overall panicked about seeing an actual irl alien.
Human Zim is scared of most paranormal activity and has a deep fear of being in space. His startled reaction fascinates dib, who asks if all humans look as sick as him. To which Zim responds that he’s the ideal human specimen and dibs nothing but a stupid looking lizard.
In an effort to keep track of the only human who knows that dib is an alien sent here to watch people, dib goes to zims school as another student. He’s a bit tall but he manages to pass as a kid to office admins who really don’t care about their job.
Torn between Zim trying to get him caught and mostly just trying to keep his distance as dib attempts to abduct him for research on his weird fucked up human body

New zadr fic! o/
Between the Stars - chapter 1 the departure
(Don't pay too much attention to the silly doodle. I wanted to draw what I have in mind. So here is Dib's ship and the hydroponic system he invented.)
Quick summary: One day, Zim disappeared from Earth without leaving a trace. Nothing.
From that day, Dib's madness grew bigger. All his troubles came, creating hatred in him for the Earth and all its population.
Years later, he left Earth and went to space to build a new life. He didn’t think he would find this stupid alien stuck on another planet.
They leave the planet together, and while they try to arrange some things from their past and in their minds, they don’t realize that far away, the Irken Armada is slowly rebuilding itself, preparing for its ultimate and last battle.
Well... that's a poor resume but I can't put all I have in mind.

You HATE Me, But I Hate YOU More: Ch.9
(sorry this took so long. A lot was happening)
Stranding before the great and mighty Tallest was invader Zim, with Minimoose and Gir by his side.
There was no one else in the room of the ship other than the pilots and such.
“Zim, we’re most grateful for your service” Red says, and Zim feels nothing but honored by this.
“Now this mission is going to be very, very VERY dangerous. But we know you can do it” Purple says, keeping close to Red.
“Yes my Tallest! I am ready to handle any mission you give to Zim!”
“Good. Now Zim, this mission is simple. We're going to give you the most dangerous and catastrophic bomb imaginable, and your going to carry it into the core of a very large and dangerous ship from an annoying group called the Resisty.” Red explains, while Purple seemed to be trying his best to stay quiet.
“The Resisty??? I've never-”
“-It doesn't matter who they are Zim. They're annoying and they're becoming a threat to the Irken empire.” Red says, leaving now room for anymore questions.
“Yes sirs! I will not fail you.” Zim says before being handed the small black box. Before returning to his ship, he's told the bomb will automatically begin the countdown to detonate once it gets into close proximity with the enemy's ship power core. Once activated, he would only have 10 minutes to escape the ship before the whole thing would explode.
Inside the Voot Cruiser, Zim navigates towards the Resisty’s ship, feeling oh so proud that the Tallest recognized his greatness for such an important mission.
The Resisty's ship seemed to be swarming with patrol units, so getting in wouldn't be easy and there weren't many floating asteroids to hide behind to get close enough. He would need some kind of divergence.
He looks towards the large and squirming sack that he had Gir retrieve for him, grinning clinically at it.
“Yes, you will make for the perfect tool…. Gir! I'm going to take out new friend to the enemy ship, you stay in the Voot Cruiser with Minmose and cause a minor disturbance until I call for you.” Zim says, and the small robot obays.
Zim gets into his space gear and grabs the sack before flying off, and Gir launches a mass of weenies as the surrounding enemy ships before flying off as they pursue him.
Aboard the Risity’s ship, Zim empties the sack, reveleaving the ginger haired girl from earth, Plotty Dev. She looked scared, frightened… but almost amazed by her surroundings. She was bound by her arms and left, her mouth covered by some device.
“Hello Plotty” Zim says, grinning.
“....!!!” Plotty couldn't believe it, she had been kidnapped by an alien who oddly sounded like her classmate Zim! obviously that must just be a coincidence, because she knew Zim was still back on earth at Prom with Dib.
“Yes, yes, I'm an alien. Now, you're going to make it up to me for all the times you STOLE the-Dib from me…! And no one steals from the GREAT ZIM!” Zim's face and tone quickly become grim. He pulls out some kind of remote control, pushing one of the buttons. The metal rope binding her legs came undone before shrinking and turning into a collar around her neck.
“You're going to be a good little human and run around this ship, and keep the enemy off my trail, and if you don't keep running, that collar will explode. “ Zim says, amused and disgusted by the girl's tears.
“Now GOOO! ZIM commands you!” Zim says, shoving her before activating the device. The girl panics and just keeps running.
Zim!? That alien was ACTUALLY Zim??? So Dib wasn't actually racist?? and what did Zim mean by taking Dib from him??? All these questions race through her mind as she continues to run.
Zim watches for a moment, feeling victorious, and ever so pleased that she would never be able to mind control Dib again.
“That's right, no one will be allowed to steal Dib from Zim, because the Dib-human belongs to me and only me! B-But that has absolutely nothing to do with being in love with the Dib-beast!!” Zim shouts out loud, feeling his face heat up. But he quickly begins running off, hoping he hadn't been noticed.
He quietly tries to navigate towards the ship's core, using his pack legs to his advantage to maneuver around through the ship.
He can hear the guards quickly become alerted to an intruder, watching some of the guards run off, clearing Zim’s path. They must have noticed the human girl.
But just ahead was the ship's power core. Zim pulls out the small black box and brings it closer, activating it, but he panics when he realizes the timer on it wasn't set for 10 minutes, but was actually set for 10 seconds. He tossed the box and quickly makes a run for it, calling Gir to hopefully pick him up in the Vootcrusier.
He runs past a few of the guards, but just as Gir and Minimoose blast a hole through the ship to meet up with their master, the bomb goes off.
Zim jumps into the Vootcrusier before the bomb goes off, but instead of just blowing up, it begins to suck them and everything in before imploding, leaving a black hole behind.
Every Irken from the armada cheered, as the great and mighty Tallest had finally rid them of the dangerous and defensive invader Zim, once and for all…

[As the sunlight peaks over the forest, golden rays peaking in through the windows, warming everything it touches, Outis would wake up alone. Nothing beside zim except for a note on the floor and two bracelets. One of the bracelets is the one Outis had given Des recently, Meikos name spelt out in beads and a small daisy charm. The other one looks older, and more worn. Upon further inspection it would be recognized as a friendship bracelet from their childhood.]
[The note reads:]
"My Sunshine,
I'm sorry. I need you to be safe and you can't be safe with me.
I love you.
Your flower
Desde"
@hidden-in-the-grass
[Outis sits up, wincing. Ze looks at the empty space next to them, confused. He said he'd be there when they woke up..
They slid off the bed and onto the floor, seeing the bracelets first. Fear struck them. Desde would just leave these...
Ze spotted the note. They started reading, tears starting to roll down their cheeks.
They picked up both the bracelets, putting them on. Ze quickly drank a healing potion and darted out the door, running as fast as they could. Ze screamed his name over and over until their voice got hoarse, but even then, they screamed for their flower.
Ze tried their best to ignore the pain continuously shooting through their body until it got too much and they collapsed, the world going dark]

So from what I understand, the initial pitch for Invader Zim was that the main source of comedy was Zim thinking posing as an elementary school student was the best use of his time as a spy and making leaps of logic based on his lack of cultural knowledge. And we did certainly see stuff like that happen in the show, but I think over time there was a shift to more episodes focusing on the Zim/Dib rivalry or things going on in space that didn’t feature the skool setting at all or didn’t revolve around cultural misunderstandings to drive the plot. IDK if they did more of that in the comics, but here’s some ideas I feel were missed opportunities. Not including anything obvious like “skool dance” episode, or “forced to work with Dib on a project”.
1 - An episode that’s just Zim and Dib narrating short stories they wrote for a creative writing assignment. It might be low-hanging fruit for them to both write the same story of a real incident between them from either of their perspectives, or a self-insert wish-fulfillment fantasy about defeating one another. I kinda like the idea of Dib writing the kind of story he himself would enjoy, like a noir-style detective story with a supernatural twist or gothic horror ghost story. Zim would just copy a story told to him by GIR, which itself is a mangled retelling of something that happened on TV that neither of them actually understand, but no matter how ridiculous and nonsensical the plot was he’d read it like it was Shakespeare.
2 - Similarly, an episode that’s just Zim giving an oral presentation on a historical figure or event, but he gets a ton of stuff wrong due to misinterpretation, or mixing up factual sources with like, a historical fantasy. Like if he read TF2 lore and told the class that stairs were invented by Abraham Lincoln.
3 - Zim gets an exam/report card back and finds out he’s performing poorly, which makes him question whether he’s learned anything at all from all the time he’s spent gathering intel. He decides to put his plans for conquest on hold to spend more time studying, except he’s not studying anything actually assigned by the skool and nothing he learns is on his next test or useful for conquering the humans.
4 - Alternatively, Zim is warned that because of all his absences and poor performance he’s at risk of being expelled. Dib mocks him for it at the first, but then decides he’d rather not have to worry about what Zim’s getting up to all day while he’s stuck in class, so he decides to help Zim break into the server room for the skool’s computer system so they can change his report card, but because this is Zimworld the security system is ridiculously over-the-top and the stakes are a like a Die Hard movie.
5 - The skool needs a team to represent for an academic decathlon. Zim signs up because he wants to show off his superior intellect and Dib joins the team to keep an eye on him (and prove his superior intellect). Zim and Dib are the math and science experts while their other teammates specialize in different subjects but everyone except Zim at least knows enough about the other subjects to mostly get the answers right if they’re forced to answer something outside their specialty. Unfortunately all the questions Zim and Dib know the answers to go to their less science-minded teammates and they get stuck with all the insane questions about skinning moose and other lectures from Ms. Bitters that they didn’t pay attention to.
Either that, or they keep getting quizzed about pop culture trivia they don’t know because they don’t keep up with mainstream television. Zim ends up getting a question right that wins the game however because he remembered it from some insufferable show GIR watches constantly and everyone treats him like a fucking genius for it. Dib meanwhile is treated like an idiot for getting all the stupid pop-culture questions wrong.
6 - The class has to read some classic lit out loud and Zim’s over-the-top dramatic narration leads to him being asked to audition for the skool play. Zim scores the lead role and gets way too into method acting. To the point where Dib can’t even tell if he legitimately thinks he’s the character or if he’s just doing it to mess with him.
7 - Zim joins a skool club and quickly usurps the club’s leadership and rules over the other members with an iron fist, twisting it from its original purpose into just being a club dedicated to serving his whims/messing with Dib. It all falls apart for some stupid reason like one member leaving and forcing the club to dissolve because it didn’t have enough members or some forms not being filled out correctly or budget issues forcing a bunch of clubs to shut down. Meanwhile, Dib tries to start a paranormal club but can’t get any members and gets kicked out of every other club he joins for trying to steer it away from whatever its original purpose was to make it about the paranormal.
8 - Baseball/team sports episode. Zim and Dib are both actually pretty decent so their team begrudgingly puts up with them. They let their rivalry get in the way at first and don’t pay any attention to the skool’s rival team talking trash about their skool. Even when it turns into an 80s cliche where the skool will actually be closed if they don’t win the game they don’t care because it is a shit skool and if it closes they’ll just go somewhere else. It’s only when one of the rival team members interrupts Zim and Dib in the middle of their own little pissing contest that they finally get their act together and start strategizing with the rest of their team. They win and finally get a taste of what it’s like to be appreciated momentarily for carrying the team until everyone else finds out their shitty skool is staying open because of them.
9 - Some Yu-Gi-Oh/Magic-type card game becomes really popular and Zim decides to get into it to blend in and find a way to exploit it to gain power over the humans. Dib naturally gets in on it too and they get way too serious about it. It either becomes an over-the-top parody of Yu-Gi-Oh and its hyper-realistic holograms and battle arenas that turn card games into genuine life-threatening experiences for participants and audiences alike, or it satirizes the satanic panic by having some kind of reveal that all the cards are actually possessed by real supernatural spirits and the games are part of some nefarious third party antagonist’s plot to overrun the world with demons or something.

Trying to save the one thing he loves most about space.
Ficlet under the cut
I always imagined this sort of scene to Trapped In Dillard’s by Foxing,
It hadn’t meant to go like this.
The Voot groaned, cutting Dib’s attention from the static over the radio as he yanked his boots on. He’d begged Zim to stay where it was safe, where they could wait in quietly together in the ship until the diagnostics were complete or until a friendly nearby ship heard their distress call.
But Zim had never been great at keeping his ego in check. He’d insisted that as a solider of the Irken Armada, he was most qualified to depart from the warm confines of the ship and manually check out the exterior for damages.
It had been fine at first with Zim giving frequent call-outs of his observations as Dib began to map all possible issues.
At some point, he’d registered a low buzzing sound beneath Zim’s chatter.
Dib scrambled to flick a call out of warning over the radio once he’d realised what might be happening - but it was too late. The buzzing had stopped and Zim was cut off, static pouring over the radio as the cockpit clicked and flashed to life.
Dib flung himself over the co-pilots chair, clamouring desperately towards the oxygen helmets kept in a corner compartment of the ship. Yanking the radio off his spacesuit belt, he threw his helmet on and slipped a second one under his arm.
“Zim,” Dib called out over his radio, “please tell me you’re alive.”
Nothing but the rush of static responded.
Dib whirled over to the airlock, reaching up and snatching an overhanging a lifeline to clip to his belt. He took a steadying breath, and punched the code in to open the airlock.
Usually, looking out into the open vacuum of space was soothing to Dib - the mundane reminder that he was just a small part of the universe, a leaf in the stream of a much larger river. It was a welcome relief from the crushing pressure of being his father’s prodigy. Now, the vast vacuum of space chilled him to the bone as he looked around the sides of the ship for his only friend. He was met only with a crushing black emptiness sprayed with dying stars. One wrong move, and nothing stops you from vanishing in an endless drift towards a certain and slow death.
He steeled his grip against the top of the airlock door and pulled himself upwards, letting go at the last minute to float towards the top of the ship. He looked desperately to the topside of the ship where he knew Zim was working, noticing a little hysterically that the hatch was still open and unmanned.
Swallowing, he looked up and around at the consuming blackness around them, their only grace a nearby set of dwarf suns emitting a dim light.
When his eyes finally landed on something floating some distance away from the ship, Dib’s heart jumped. He squinted as he took the binoculars out of his suit pocket, adjusting them hurriedly as the picture of Zim’s red suit slowly came into focus.
“Zim!” Dib called in vain over the suit comms, using all of his strength to launch himself off the ship with the help of his suit thrusters.
As he floated, he didn’t know if it was the scene that was slowly becoming closer or or the freezing temperature of space, but Dib’s blood felt sharp and icy as it forced its way through his body, biting pains emanating from his chest. Zim’s body was unmoving and, much to Dib’s mounting panic, unmasked against the void. His face was basked into the deep shadows of space and light of the nearby suns. His body, for the first time ever, was completely limp.
After what seemed like years, Dib finally reached Zim. He knew Irkens, with the the help of their Paks, could withstand the pressures and temperatures of space for an intimidating amount of time, but Dib didn’t know the limitations once the body had already sustained injuries from electrical charges. Already, Zim’s face was beginning to crystallise and bloom into a deep deadly blue. Dib yanked the helmet out from under his arm and pulled it over Zim’s head, clasping it desperately to Zim’s suit with shaking hands. He watched as the mask signalled it was delivering a much needed flow. Pressing one hand to Zim’s chest, he allowed himself a small rush of relief as he felt Zim’s chest move with a fragile breath.
Dib pulled Zim closer, cradling his neck carefully and pressing their torsos together as he inputted the recall command on the lifeline.
As they were yanked back towards the ship, he braced himself for the unceremonious crash against the floor of the spacecraft, twisting to ensure he broke Zim’s fall.
After a moment, the airlock closed swiftly. Dib reached over towards an emergency kit for high flow oxygen, clicking the hosing into the back of Zim’s helmet. With a pained grunt Dib slumped backwards, pulling Zim’s body up and into his lap, allowing the quiet hiss of air soothe him. He brushed a hand over Zim’s shoulders and arms, coming up to cup a hand against the helmet where Zim’s cheek slowly began to slowly radiate back to his usual green colour.
Dib let his head fall back against the wall behind him, taking a deep shuddering breath.
Even with everything he has seen on this escapade across the galaxy - from the extraordinary planets and individual lifeforms to the nebulas and vast galaxies, he’d never been as euphoric to see his alien again.

Doppelganger adrift (part 4)
His claws twitched.
“…I’ll say it to you.”
He stood suddenly, too quick—pacing two short steps before turning back, fists clenched at his sides.
“But if you laugh or die or say something smug, I will eject you into space after all this is over.”
His voice was trembling.
He stared at Dib like the words were clawing their way out of him.
“…When I first came to this planet, I thought you were pathetic. Loud. Inconsequential.”
A pause.
“Then you wouldn’t shut up. You wouldn’t go away. You chased me, questioned me, tried to expose me—but you were always there.”
His breathing hitched.
“I told myself it was because you were obsessed. That you needed me. That your brain wasn’t right.”
He looked away, jaw shaking.
“But it wasn’t just you. It was me. I… I needed it. I needed you.”
Zim’s voice was barely audible now.
“I’ve done everything I can to convince myself I don’t care. That I’d win if you just disappeared. That I’d be stronger without you…”
His hand lifted, gesturing vaguely toward his own head.
“But when that thing wore your face, I— I wanted it to be real. Not because I’m weak. But because…”
He forced the words out like they burned:
“…because if I die out here, I don’t want it to be with regret.”
He turned away again, shoulders shaking.
“…I needed to say that. And I didn’t want to say it to something pretending to be you.”
Silence.
Then, quieter:
“I wanted you to hear it.”
-
Dib watched, the disaster that was Zim’s expressions as his voice pivoted back and forth from clear and erratic. It was like the Irken was both a soft renewing rain fall, and a disastrous defensive thunderstorm. It left Dib with a little empathetic whiplash and he remained staring with a dumb look on his face for an uncomfortable amount of time.
A sound that could give a hyena a run for its money reached them for a split second like something crying out in pain.
“I’ve been cheated twice.” A voice, Dib’s own perfectly replicated one called from a vent above them. A final clicking noice and then nothing.
The lights flicked on, brighter now than before. The ship had regained power, as if the mimic had been the very cause of the ships malfunction to begin with.
Dib couldn’t find the words. He wanted desperately to respond to Zim’s words and free the irken of the limbo and worry so perfectly etched into it ethereal features but they eluded him at every turn. Words, such fickle things.
“What would you regret?” Dib finally landed on, ironically regretting the question. He knew he should say anything at all back, something to scream back at Zim. Me too, to all of it, I need you to. However he instead he just sat staring at the wall.
-
Zim didn’t turn when the mimic spoke.
He flinched—once—like it had struck him in the back of the head. But he didn’t react beyond that. He stared at the floor, fists at his sides, chest tight and frozen.
“I’ve been cheated twice.”
The ship shuddered, just once, like exhaling. Then the lights returned.
Brighter.
Alive.
The hum of the system purred back to life like it had never failed.
The curse had been broken.
But Zim still stood in the wreckage of his own vulnerability, waiting for something that never came.
He didn’t hear laughter.
Didn’t hear mocking.
Didn’t hear Dib’s usual snide retorts or nervous attempts to smooth things over.
He heard a question:
“What would you regret?”
Not the answer.
Not acknowledgment.
Just more ambiguity.
More silence.
Zim turned slowly, magenta eyes flicking over Dib like he couldn’t quite read him. Not now. Not after saying the thing that should’ve undone the world.
He’d expected… something.
Even rejection. That would’ve been clean.
But this?
This was limbo.
“…Never mind,” Zim said. Flat. Not angry. Not cold. Just vacant. Like the breath had been knocked out of him and he was trying not to show it.
He handed the laptop back, claws loose.
“Looks like the ghost got bored.”
He turned toward the door, slow and stiff.
“If we’re lucky,” he muttered, “this thing has autopilot back online. We’ll be back in orbit within a day.”
He didn’t wait for a response.
He just walked out of the room.
-
Dib cursed the universe. Clarity snapping him back to his senses at the obvious hurt Zim was trying to cover for. He was up and out the door right behind Zim in seconds and he grabbed at the alien’s writ almost missing. He lurched forward a little too far and stabilized himself against a wall. Like the panic had rendered his legs half-operable or something.
“I need you.” Dib huffed still recovering his balance. Zim didnt turn at first but he didn’t pull his writ away either. “I- I get it now, not knowing if you’re going to say something right.” Dib scoffed at himself.
Zim’s eyes finally met his own and he couldn’t name what he was seeing in them.
“Do you ever feel like- maybe… you’ve been looking for something painfully right in front of your own face?” Dib asked. His nerves were shot but he persisted he had to. He had one chance.
-
Zim had almost made it to the corridor bend.
Almost.
He heard the footsteps first—too fast. The kind of chase you don’t make unless it hurts not to. Then—fingers wrapped around his wrist, warm and unsteady. He felt the jolt of impact as Dib braced against the wall, heard the sharp inhale as his balance barely held.
Zim didn’t turn.
Didn’t speak.
Just stood, frozen. Listening.
“I need you.”
That stopped him cold. Not like fear—like gravity.
Something in his chest stuttered. He felt the words hit like a power surge to his Pak—like something that hadn’t been wired into him but had always been waiting.
Still, he didn’t move.
Until—
“I get it now, not knowing if you’re going to say something right.”
A flicker.
His shoulders tensed, his posture shifted just slightly toward Dib—not away. Not recoiling. Listening.
Finally, he turned.
Eyes met eyes.
And Dib asked the question:
“Do you ever feel like—maybe… you’ve been looking for something painfully right in front of your own face?”
Zim stared.
His expression was unreadable at first. Not angry. Not confused.
But cracked—somewhere deep in the core of him, something broke open. Not in a painful way. In a way that let light in.
“Only every time I look at you,” he said.
It came out without flourish. No drama. No grin. No sting.
Just truth.
And it sat between them like a heartbeat.
Zim took a step closer—not fully bridging the gap, but close enough to feel Dib’s pulse in the air.
“You know the worst part?” he whispered. “I think I’ve always known.”
He didn’t smile.
But the look on his face?
That was the look of someone finally free.
-
Dib’s entire body relaxed and he let himself drift, using the wall to slide to the floor and sit. He started laughing. It was soft and light, and if ever a laugh could be, it was kind.
“Only every time I look at you. I’ve always known.” Zim’s words repeated, bouncing around his head like a game of pong. If he could rewind time he’d do nothing else with it, just hear him say all of that a few more times. Just to solidify it.
“I knew… but I was scared of it until now.” The human admitted and then simply waited.
Zim watched Dib slide down the wall like the panic had drained out of him and left acceptance in its place. The laugh—it made Zim’s spine go stiff. Not because it was insulting. But because it was alien. Not sarcastic. Not exasperated. Just… soft.
And real.
He’d never heard Dib laugh like that before. Not once.
Not even when they were pretending not to like each other as much as they did.
And now?
“I knew… but I was scared of it until now.”
Zim stayed standing for a moment longer, body still catching up with his brain. He could feel the Pak processing this interaction like a data stream it had no template for. There were no enemy readings. No calculations to make. No threat. Just this quiet moment—this earned breath in the aftermath of ghosts and gravity and terrible honesty.
He sat.
Not beside Dib, but in front of him. Cross-legged, antennae slightly tilted forward.
Not asking for closeness.
But offering it.
“I don’t want to scare you,” Zim said finally, voice softer than it had been since they met. “I don’t want to be the thing that waits in the dark and steals your face.”
He stared at his claws. “I think… I have been. For a long time.”
Then he looked up. Eyes catching Dib’s in the stillness.
“But if this is what happens when we stop running from it…”
He reached out—slowly—and touched Dib’s hand, claws barely brushing knuckles.
“…Then maybe we were always meant to be chased.”
And for once?
Zim didn’t pull away.
-
Dib leaned forward. The man was a paranormal investigator, but he was also a scientist. Demanding a new theory be tested.
He entwined his four fingers with Zim’s three and they fit, like they’d been always meant to fit. That thought, a final push.
Dib leaned forward, his movement slow as to offer retreat if Zim needed it.
Zim met him half way.
A final defining experiment.
Dib’s lips hesitantly touched Zim’s own.
-
The ship was silent now.
No mimic. No alarms. Just the hum of systems returning to life—and the low, steady sound of two pulses finally syncing.
Their hands stayed clasped, mismatched digits woven together like it had always been that way, like the universe had written their anatomy in anticipation of this.
Dib’s lips met Zim’s—cautious, gentle, but real. No theatrics. No ceremony. Just that final experiment, tested at last. And Zim? He didn’t flinch. Didn’t pull back. If anything, he leaned in, trembling just slightly, as if still shocked that this hadn’t killed him.
That instead—it had saved them both.
They stayed like that. For one breath. Then two.
When they finally broke apart, there were no words.
There didn’t need to be.
Some truths are louder when unspoken.
