Using both Dania and IPA for transcription in my thesis is slowly driving me crazy. As a rule, I write all my papers in Doulos SIL because it is perfectly readable and supports IPA. HOWEVER, using the Danish transcription system Dania, which is developed, and therefore very good, for Danish requires me to either use the Dania font or give up every Dania symbol not supported by unicode, which is A LOT of them.

So here I am, changing the font of almost every transcription I do, which goes directly against the reason I even downloaded Doulos SIL in the first place. But at least it's quite entertaining to be writing things in Dania before changing the font.

​I cannot reiterate enough how much I appreciate my girls and I am happy that others can see that I do. When I did a presentation on my thesis I also couldn't stop complimenting them hehehe.

I am actually super upsetti spaghetti that I cannot mention literally everything they've said. You need to read the transcripts for that.

But yeah, oops, it looks like I might have to scrap Martha's quote in case I need to make space for other things, but that means I will not have a Martha quote and that upsets me. But Martha just didn't have much to say and that isn't a bad thing. She sent me a message even before she decided to sign up, cause she said she was interested, but also worried she wouldn't contribute a lot since she didn't have that many thoughts and opinions on queer representation.

And she was right. She really didn't have a lot to say. But as I also said: no information is also information. Her not really caring is another example of how queer women (in this case, this individual queer woman) look at media.

This does mean that she only have 2 interestiing quotes, because yeah, like I said, I am making things too difficult for myself so I have a separate quotes document where I wrote down all interesting quotes categorised by person. And one of those quotes became redundant, so she only had one. Welp. That's how it goes.

And ah yes, ANNE+. I got Anne, Lily, Sara, Jip and Maya. Anne actually chose her own alias for non-ANNE+ reasons, but it's still pretty funny. I tell people this and people always lose it. If you read the end of Sara's transcript it's just her who cannot stop laughing after I told her that it'd be an ANNE+ name.

I do have two exceptions: I named Kat after Kat Addison, because she loves The Bold Type. She was my first respondent, so that was before I came up with the idea to pick ANNE+ names. A fun thing is that I do have Kat and Muis now. And Martha requested that I would use a random name generator, so she's Martha, not Esther or Janna or whoever's left.

Unhappy bc I was assigned four more one-hour interviews to transcribe and I rapidly discovered during the transcribing of the last round of interviews that I frickin hate transcribing. I don't know what it is because it's pretty mundane work that I'm usually fine with, like along the lines of data entry, but if I do it for more than an hour at a time I get super antsy and become physically uncomfortable. Like I have to take at least an hour break between every hour of work, and the most I've ever been able to transcribe in an hour is 8 minutes of audio (and that was with perfect audio that had no fritzing or echoes or background noise), so it takes like bare minimum seven or eight hours for me to be able to transcribe a one hour interview.

It has been a running rumor for a few months, but nobody really believes it, the stone faced great sage and their welcoming grace? No, never, impossible. There are scholars attempting to refute it but their attempts are short-lived as a few months later you settle back in sumeru, and your lazyly hanging robe you wear now is pushed slightly forward around the abdomen, just enough for it to be an untold fact.

Alhaitham drags your vanity stool to your bedside, a soft creaking sound coming from the friction between the woods. You side down the pillows with a smile on your lips “fine, if you don't want to read alchemical botany why don't you use the white book?” as he glances over he read the simple title ‘weight distribution in columns depending on materials’ and sighs heavily.

There is a small whisper in the last few months that the child could be meant to be one of the great sages but the matra keeps it down when someone starts with it.

When he is born Alhaitham reads to his son some of the books he kept from his parents.

The one year old is perched on his lap, leaning against one of his arms while they both look at the book, one of them reading attentively the words and explaining some concepts while the other is attempting to fall asleep.

“I doubt he is truly listening to you”

“You would be surprised by how much the biology faculty showed children can learn before school”

“I believe they meant before the 5 years mark, not 6 months”

Maybe even wants you to do something similar, it could be an essay, thesis or even storybook but he would want it to have some banter between you two or little comments like “it's good that you remembered to spell correctly postganglionic fibers, I don't have to correct you anymore”

He uses kaveh as an underpaid nanny just plopping the toddler on his lap and leaving without saying a word. He does stop when his son's drawings start to feature more houses and structures than people.

When your baby grows he is the smartest of his class, reciting everything his father read to him since before his birth, even if he refuses to acknowledge it al haitham is really proud of his son and his little shelf with math Olympics medals or the certificate he got from the first place in a writing competition.

Even then the moment your son turns 18 and has to decide what branch he wants to go into is the hardest week of his life, dreading the possibility of another architect in his life. He is quite happy when he choses spantamad, even if he would have like him to go for haravatat.

[The friend still stands while Cueball looks at his computer.] Cueball: When did we forget our dreams? Friend: What?

[Cueball stands beside his friend.] Cueball: The infinite possibilities each day holds should stagger the mind. The sheer number of experiences I could have is uncountable, breathtaking, and I'm sitting here refreshing my inbox. We live trapped in loops, reliving a few days over and over, and we envision only a handful of paths laid out before us. Summary of results - Intercultural and cross-linguistic perspectives on the whump genre

Here is a summary of the results from the research thesis, "Intercultural and cross-linguistic perspectives on the whump genre"! This was part of my studying a Master of Contemporary International Studies. The research aimed to explore how whump-interested people connect with the whump genre cross-culturally and cross-linguistically.

Back in June/July this year (2023), I sent out a questionnaire open to any whump-interested person, and also invited interviews for bilingual whump-interested people. I've finally finished my thesis, and overall was awarded an A- for it!

The full thesis is available now to read on Academia.edu, and will also be available on IPU New Zealand's library website in January 2024.

This research was approved for Human Research Ethics Clearance by the IPU New Zealand Research and Development Commitee on 3rd May 2023 (HREC-2023-05-03-01).

Summary of results (Questionnaire)

233 respondents | 92 different cultural/faith-based identities

The questionnaire was used to answer Research Question 1, "How do the aspects of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and Schwartz’ universal human values reflect in the characteristics of whump genre identity?"

The questionnaire explored four themes associated with whump genre concepts - “agency,” “comfort,” “stoicism,” and “knowledge” - and found (p. 87):

For the theme of “agency,” questionnaire participants tended to perceive a greater importance for agency for the caretaker and whumper roles. This may be related to the caretaker and whumper role characters’ abilities to carry out their roles of caretaking and whumping respectively. While the cultural dimensions did not appear to be factors inherent to the theme of agency for the whumpee role in a whump genre story, this appeared to work towards supporting the cross-cultural enjoyment of whump. For the theme of “comfort,” hurt comfort, physical comfort and long-term recovery may be more accommodating of cultural dimension dynamics and have a greater capacity to fully realise the goals of Schwartz’ values. For the theme of “stoicism,” the way in which these dimensions can so diversely be applied to this theme suggests a cross-culturally applicable ground. For the theme of “knowledge,” the balance between the certainty of a known whumpee and the uncertainty of an unknown whumper indicate variable tolerance of ambiguity within the whump genre. This suggests a cross-culturally applicable ground.

The interview was used to answer Research Question 2, "How do bilingual whump-interested people perceive the ability to convey themes of hurt comfort (a subgenre of whump) in different languages?"

The interview questions were categorised into themes:

Theme 1: Preferences for language when interacting with fiction

Theme 2: Comparisons of different languages’ abilities to convey physical and emotional pain

Theme 3: Limitations or difficulties experienced when conveying whump in, and across, different languages

Theme 4: Cultural, social, and/or linguistic reasons influencing pronunciation of “whump”

Following transcription of the interviews, a thematic analysis involving examining code co-occurences found (p. 123):

For “Theme 1: Preferences for language when interacting with fiction,” preferences tended to be associated with the availability of media, the ability to connect with the author’s intended meaning, and the level of ease and comfort with which interviewees could engage with the fictional media. For “Theme 2: Comparisons of different languages’ abilities to convey physical and emotional pain,” interviewees’ comparisons highlighted differing ways of presenting and conveying pain in language, for example, through language features and words. Overall, interviewees felt that the languages which they were fluent in were generally equally capable of conveying physical and emotional pain, although different languages tended to approach the communicating of pain in different ways. For “Theme 3: Limitations or difficulties experienced when conveying whump in, and across, different languages,” the perceived limitations and difficulties experienced across languages tended to be associated with difficulties in conveying semantic, pragmatic and cultural meaning across languages, and tended to stem from the differences between sociolinguistic approaches to communicating ideas in languages. For “Theme 4: Cultural, social, and/or linguistic reasons influencing pronunciation of “whump,” common cultural, social and linguistic reasons for interviewees’ pronunciations of “whump” included how interviewees expected the word to sound based on their expectations of the letters in the phonological environment, the impact of a lack of having heard the word spoken aloud, sociocultural influences, intuition and language education.

Research Question 1 explored cross-culturally applicable aspects of the whump genre. The findings suggested that themes of the whump genre accommodate variations in cultural social orientations and values, thereby enabling an interculturally common ground among whump-interested people.

Using qualitative research (interview), Research Question 2 explored how bilingual whump-interested people perceive and connect with hurt comfort themes across different languages. The findings suggest that multiple factors contribute to how bilingual whump-interested people engage with the whump genre, including but not limited to first and second languages as a tool to experience closely or otherwise distance the subject with, the availability of whump media in different languages, and manner of conveying aspects of pain and comfort through lexical, phonetic, grammatical and cultural aspects of language.

as an academic, and as someone who claims to be responsible and organised, i have started to accept that there are limits to how much more I can push myself through this journey. I can see when my adrenaline depleted, and when my mind and soul just yearns for rest. i've pondered on it a lot, i've been studying nonstop for 16 years (starting from 1st grade to now). with only summer breaks in between each for rest, but the latter years especially starting with A-Levels has become heavier. i can see now why some people take months off after studying. or why others take a year gap before going to college.

i crave for that extended break. i feel like i'm reaching my end. this thesis is very well nearing its end too, but i fear that i might reach a conclusion before it does.

it's 1am and right now i aim to finish up the rest of this transcript, which i should have accomplished last week. but because of the burnout, i ended up taking more time to rest and be idle than to actually work on it. it's starting to overwhelm me, even though i cannot be overwhelmed by it. i'm transcribing nearly 3 and a half hours worth of interviews. while the findings are truly eye-opening (and i can't wait to share this with all of you once it's done), and inspiring to write about, i also fear that my own creative juices for research writing is dwindling... while i wait for the facility's approval of my transcripts, i'll write some mini research papers just to get the hang of it again. i'll even read some research papers and theses so that i'll get in the groove of writing some. maybe if you guys have any research articles to suggest, you can send it in the comments below 🤍

Being a hobbyist bookbinder gives you a lot of power in curating what populates your bookshelf. Sometimes I use that power wisely, like saving my fiancé €50 by handbinding their PhD thesis (not shared, since it's labelled with their name).

Other times, I give iconic works of fiction the Penguins Classics Clothbound treatment they don't deserve—only true goffs will understand. (AN: f@#% off prepz!)

It's an early Christmas gag gift, which I'm considering pairing with a transcript/mock screenplay of The Room.

Inspired by this incredible work of art, which was one of the posts that lured me into bookbinding in the first place. You can see samples of the wonderful typesetting in that post.

I used this resource to generate the HTV cover elements, which made things so much quicker and more precise than doing it from scratch. The temptation to use the generator for EVERYTHING I make from here on out will be hard to resist.

That said, I have about... four?? ongoing binding projects, all with unique covers. There's no danger of Enoby becoming Just Like Other Girls yet 🧛‍♀️
