Bite-Size Drarry - Under 10k (Part Three)

Pausing my RWRB reading (I have an ask about firstprince fics too and I’m working on it!) to answer this, which is the nudge I’ve needed. I’ve done this for Dramione before (under 5k), but I especially love tempting readers to Drarry.

Short works are the unsung heroes of fandom. They don’t get enough love, which makes me so sad, because you definitely don’t always need 100k to deliver a stunning story. These are your bedtime stories, your palate cleansers, your individual serving sizes of serotonin. It’s okay to enjoy these even if you only read slow burn 100k+ fics, I promise. Live a little!

This is a sampling of some amazing favorites, but I’m always reading new things and will add to it regularly. If you find something you love, I know the author would love to hear it, and so would I! Take a deep dive into their work to find other gems.

No Bones About It by @peachpety. T, 5k. To remain eligible to play football for Hogwarts University, Harry needs to pass his gen bio exam. Too bad he chose the course based on the hotness of the TA and not the leniency of the professor. With the help of his friends and a Magic 8 Ball, Harry seeks tutoring from Draco Malfoy, Hot TA. Cue: chance encounters, flirting in library nooks, and prophecies fulfilled.

Closer by @pennygalleon. M, 5.1k. All who know them are convinced that Harry and Draco are a couple. But that's just ridiculous.

Draco at Nineteen by birdsofshore. E, 5.1k. It's the middle of the night and Harry Potter is sitting on my bed looking distinctly weird. I've had some fucked-up dreams in my time, but this one... this one is something new.

From the Day We Met (I Loved You) by @dodgerkedavra. M, 5.1k. Harry receives a tiny, mysterious advent calendar on December 1. It takes him until December 24 to work out who it’s from.

Alabaster by @slytherco. E, 5.3k. It's not just for Harry, it's for them.

The Way You Say My Name by InnerLilith. E, 5.3k. In which Malfoy calls Harry pet names to get him flustered and riled up, and Harry gets flustered and riled up because he secretly likes it. The problem is that Malfoy is only teasing…or is he?

Mise en Place by @corvuscrowned. T, 5.4k. Draco needs to learn how to cook, and luckily, Harry knows his way around a kitchen.

The fact that Draco is using his newfound cooking skills to impress another man... Well, Harry just tries not to think about that too much.

But somewhere, among all of the spicing and savoring, Harry realizes that Draco is coming by for more than just a good meal.

Behind the glass by @quicksilvermaid. E, 5.5k. Harry would do anything for Draco. And that includes helping him satisfy a very particular kink.

Two of Us by @iota. E, 5.5k. The gang goes to a gay bar. Or: five times Harry accidentally pretended to be Draco’s boyfriend and one time Draco told him to put out or shut up.

Harry is still thirty-five and doing his best to look after his de-aged Auror partner (and forget about his long unrequited crush) until St. Mungo’s can brew the antidote. Only, Draco insists on wandering around Harry’s flat wearing nothing but Harry’s pants, flirting like his life depends on it and in the end, Harry’s only human after all.

He really, really isn’t. Potter is across the club, surrounded by his usual entourage, looking at Draco when he thinks Draco isn’t looking back.

I'm lying when I'm looking away by InnerLilith. E, 6.7k. Sometimes it takes a Purim party and a flapper dress for Harry to figure out what he likes. (Spoiler: He likes Malfoy.) Or: Come for the hamantaschen, stay for the sex.

Last Offices by @tackytigerfic. M, 6.7k MCD Harry prepares Draco's body in pureblood rituals with the help of his friends after his partner's death on the job.

Trouble with your tie, Potter? by @tenthousandyearsx. E, 6.7k. The last thing Harry expects when Slughorn partners him up with Zabini is Malfoy shooting them furious looks throughout the whole class and then unceremoniously snogging Harry in the corridor.

Harry really ought to listen to whatever Ron is saying, but it becomes impossible to focus when a familiar figure across the pub curls his fingers around another man’s tie. And when that man leans in with a wolfish smile, Harry sees red, and all he can think is mine.

Champion by @shealwaysreads. T, 6.9k. Harry thought his Eighth Year would be simple and easy. And it sort of is, though not in the ways he expected.

I hope you're all doing well and fine and I send lots of love especially for those who struggle in a way or another during the holidays. 💖

Personally I feel a bit indifferent about the holidays; not that many good memories of them, and I’m used to work my way through Christmas (I love the vibes at work on Christmas). This is the first Christmas in over 10 years I’m not with the meemaws and peepaws at work and I don’t know what am I supposed to doooo. Probably read some tooth-rotting holiday fluff laced with some festive smut while downing some glögi, so here we go. Some of these are from 25 days of harry and draco, run don’t walk to check out this year’s (and the previous!) advent fics. So cute, so good. Here's some of my favorites:

The best Christmas he ever had by @gnarf ❄️ 1,965 words

Christmas had never been less appealing to him than this year. That was until Arthur Weasley showed up at his door, dressed as Santa, inviting him to the Burrow.

I'm absolutely weak for the Christmas at the Burrow-trope, and this little story definitely hits all the right boxes. It's warm, adorable, cute, everything you need and more.

“Ah, you must be little Teddy Lupin!” Harry frowns, that voice sounds oddly familiar. Shaking himself he turns to face the newcomer, plastering a smile on his face that promptly disappears as he takes in the man in front of him. “Malfoy?” alternatively, The one where Draco Malfoy is a kindergarten teacher and Harry definitely needs to keep an eye on him. Closely.

I strongly feel that a fic with some cute Teddy-content never misses. This fic starts in the fall and continues all the way to New Years Eve and has some disgustingly good fluff and domestic vibes. All in all an easy and cozy read for the holiday season.

Changing with the season by @harryromper ❄️ 36,225 words

Harry's determined the first time he hosts the extended Weasley clan for Christmas will be a success. The Grimmauld Place advent calendar has other ideas ... until Draco shows up to help. A 25 Days of Draco and Harry story.

Adorable, warm, funny, very very festive. Definitely hits all the holiday spirit needs.

The Curious Case of the Disappearing Stockings by @thealmostrhetoricalquestion ❄️ 11,549 words

It's Harry's Eighth Year, he's surrounded by Slytherins, and Christmas Stockings are going missing all over Hogwarts. At the risk of being mocked ruthlessly, Harry won't verbally declare that Malfoy probably has something to do with it, but... well, Malfoy definitely has something to do with it.

This was such a fun little fic. The dynamics between Harry and the Slytherins were amazing, and the stocking fiasco was just too adorable. And there's just something about the holidays in Hogwarts for me personally. Very sweet and endearing.

Eight Drarry Nights-series by @phoebe-delia ❄️ 9 works, 6078 words in total

This is a series of fics based on prompts given to me on Tumblr, one for each night of Hanukkah! The prompts aren't all and don't have to be related to Hanukkah and/or Judaism; some are and some aren't.

This is the perfect series to read at bedtime, having some fuzzy socks on, a warm blanket up to your ears and snow falling silently outside. Like said in the description, all of the little fics are not festive but I think the big picture gives all the holiday vibes I'm craving for.

Forever Was a Lie by @thesleepiesthufflepuff & art by dustmouth ❄️ 22,001 words

After breaking up with Charlie, Harry heads to Rome for Christmas to search for answers to a previous heartbreak. What he doesn’t expect is for Draco, the man who broke his heart five years ago, to be running the bed and breakfast he’s staying at.

Now this is not a traditional holiday fic per se, but a bittersweet, angsty, second chances story that takes place over Christmas in Rome. It has this wistful feel throughout and is right up my alley. I devoured this and it left me feeling all warm and fuzzy in the end. Also the gorgeous art really puts the whole thing together.

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the place, Not even Kreacher was stirring, too snug in his space; The mantle was empty, not a stocking in sight And Harry had gone to bed for the night; He sat, unhappy, wrapped tight in his bed As visions of loved ones danced in his head; Meanwhile at the Manor, Draco stood in the snow And smoked a cigarette, no light but its glow; Two men, more like boys, distant and sad With only the lonely times that they had. When what to their wondering eyes did appear, But a future so bright, so distant and clear It was just out of reach, a handsbreadth away Unless they both made a choice on this day To take what they wanted, perhaps with a shove Before falling, falling, falling in love.

I felt actual physical pain reading this, watching the years go by and Christmases to pass. But it was a good pain, the kind I crave for especially at this time of year. Slowest of slow burns, endearing, touching and funny friends to lovers holiday excursion. Loved this.

How to Handle Hannukah by Blowfish_Diaries ❄️ 10,445 words

Harry and Draco have decided to cohabitate. And to throw a Hannukah party. Enter latkes, spreadsheets, and Pansy beating everyone at dreidel. This is a fluffy, domestic fic to celebrate the holiday season and add another chapter to the "How to Handle a Matzo Ball Soup Emergency" series.

This is a sequel to the amazing "How to Handle a Matzo Ball Soup Emergency" and one of my absolute favorites along with the first part. I highly recommend to read the first part, but I think this works as a standalone aswell. It's incredibly well-written with fluff to die for and some class a smut, everything you need for the holiday season, even though today the 15th of December I’m posting this is the last day of Hanukkah. A definite must-read along with the first part.

Love, Actually, is All Around by @punk-rock-yuppie ❄️ 9,975 words

"General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed—but I don't see that—seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified, or newsworthy—but it's always there." —Love Actually, 2003 It's Christmastime, and Harry has just started as the new Minister of Magic. It just so happens that Draco works in his office as well, a holdover from Kingsley's tenure. Naturally, love is in the air.

Now hold up. Love Actually is one of my favorite movies and oh how I love this fic. Adorable and cute packed with holiday vibes.

I’m swooning over this fic. It has the perfect ratio of angst, fluff, hurt, comfort, smut and holiday vibes. It made me laugh, it made me cry. It's so incredibly lovely and definitely a must-read every holiday season.

What got to me most in this fic was that little part in the beginning about Harry's trip to London as a kid with Petunia. It really punched me in the gut and got me tearing up. The whole story was sweet and Harry's thoughts and feelings were written out so beautifully.

I love this so much. Made me feel so safe and warm and festive, a certified holiday vibe. All the coziness you need this time of year in a pretty little package.

Happy birthday darling Fay @thesleepiesthufflepuff!!! You are such a ray of light and a joy to know, and I am so so so grateful to be able to call you my friend. You deserve the whole world, but I hope this fluffy little thing inspired by Clodagh and her jammies will suffice. Wishing you the happiest of birthdays and all the puppy snuggles today.

Harry paced restlessly up and down the hallway as he waited for the dog trainer to arrive. It had seemed like a good idea at the time — Dog needed to be trained, and No Bark, No Bite had the highest ratings in the neighbourhood. Harry had been full of hope as he’d filled out the online form, visions of long walks with his faithful companion swimming through his head. It had all come crashing down, however, when the confirmation email came through.

“Draco Malfoy will see you at 10am on Wednesday morning.”

So here Harry was, contemplating whether he could just live with the fact that Dog refused to go outside so that he could escape the doom that was fast approaching.

It wasn’t that he didn’t like Malfoy anymore. No, he quite liked the git now that they had all grown up a bit and let bygones be bygones. The problem was quite the opposite, really. Because Malfoy — Draco — was smart and witty and charming and fucking fit. And Harry knew Draco worked with animals. Knew his job was in Harry’s own neighbourhood. And now he was coming here to Harry’s house and he’d know that Harry was fucking incompetent — and a liar, because Harry had told him only three days ago that everything was fine and he didn’t need help with his new puppy but thank you very much.

He was so stupid. Stupid stupid stupid.

Draco chewed on his lips as he walked up the path, once again questioning the wisdom in taking this job. He should have handed the client on to Cassie as soon as he saw the name. Should have packed his bags and move to another country. Because now he had to work with Harry and be professional. Had to pretend that the mere idea of Harry with a puppy didn’t make his insides melt.

He sucked in a breath and knocked on the door, relaxing minutely when he heard a faint crash from inside followed by colourful swearing. At least he wasn’t the only one who was nervous.

Harry opened the door, his hair even more wild than it was on pub nights. A tiny black puppy crouched behind him, eyeing the open door in fascination but making no move to step outside.

“Potter.” Draco held out his hand, determined to remain professional. “How can I help you?”

A disaster. It was all a terrible disaster.

Draco had stayed barely half an hour before declaring he knew the problem, but wouldn’t be able to fix it today. He had almost run back down the street, as if he couldn’t stand to be near Harry any longer.

Harry knew he was weird and awkward, but he thought he’d had it vaguely under control that morning.

Sure, he had a dog named Dog. Well, Dumbledog, at Teddy’s insistence, but even Harry wasn’t strange enough to go around calling the poor little thing by her full name. And yes, he couldn’t work a normal job like Draco did, and yes, Dog was largely purchased with the plan to train her as a therapy dog to help him with his anxiety. And yes, he was so fucking gone on Draco that he could barely string two sentences together.

But that didn’t mean Draco had to run away, did it?

He could only hope that he would be able to hold himself together better next time they saw each other.

Harry had been so sweet and so concerned about his dog, all of Draco’s heartstrings had been stretched beyond their limits. And he had a dog named Dog of all things, which Draco would have laughed at if it had been anyone else. Instead it was Harry, and Draco felt all stretched out and upside down. Like nothing in the world could ever be the same now that he had seen Harry cuddle a tiny, wriggly ball of fluff named Dog.

So here he was, a tangle of yarn in his lap, knitting needles in one hand and instruction book in the other. Because poor Dog was cold and there was only one thing he could do when faced with a puppy who refused to go on walks with Harry Potter due to the cold.

Learn to knit doggy jumpers.

Harry was baffled.

“So, Dog was just cold?”

“Yeah,” Draco replied, tucking Dog’s paws through the front legs of her new little jumper. “Hopefully this is enough, but we might need to get her booties too if her feet are sensitive.”

“They sell booties for dogs?”

“The Muggles do, yeah. They’re quite sweet, actually.”

Harry blinked. Had Draco just called a Muggle invention sweet?

“Could we not just use a warming charm?” Dog looked very sweet in her jumper, but Harry couldn’t help be confused by the fact that Draco hadn’t immediately turned to magic.

“Oh, Dog is allergic to warming charms. I checked last time, but you were so worried about her I didn’t want to say anything until I had a solution.”

“Oh.” Harry could only stare at Draco, silently willing his expression into something acceptable. “Thank you, Draco. That’s very thoughtful of you.”

This man was going to be the death of him.

“Dog is allergic to warming charms,” he muttered to himself furiously. “Honestly, Draco, could you have been any more obvious?”

He sunk into his couch, running his fingers through his hair. He didn’t know how Harry hadn’t seen right through him, he hadn’t even tried to hide how stupidly in love he was.

Love. Fuck. He loved Harry Potter and now he’d lied to him and fucking learnt to knit for his dog and…

There was only one thing left to do.

“So she needed the booties, then?” Harry blinked sleepily at Draco, who had turned up unexpectedly while Harry and Dog were having a nap.

“Well, she seemed to walk happily last week, but I thought it was better safe than sorry. How has she been?”

“She’s been great! I think the jacket has really helped, thank you so much.”

“I’m glad to hear it. I’ll leave you to it then.”

Draco began to walk away, and Harry made a snap decision.

“Wait! Did you want to come for a walk with us? You know, to check on Dog’s progress?”

Harry was an idiot. A sweet, bumbling, adorable idiot. And Draco was a fool.

Dog had loved their walk, prancing through the fallen leaves and chasing squirrels as far as her lead would allow. Harry, however, had looked positively miserable as his eyes watered and his nose streamed and his fingers turned blue.

“I told you to bundle up, Potter,” Draco had said, only half of his old sneer coming through.

“I put an extra sweater on!” Harry had exclaimed, as if a sweater would keep his extremities warm.

“What about a hat? A scarf? Some mittens?”

“Oh,” Harry said, tilting his head in thought. “I don’t think I own any. Gave them all to Dobby.”

“Potter, Dobby died ten years ago.” He’d tried to be soft, tried not to snap at the foolish, stupid man beside him.

“I guess I just didn’t think about it.”

And so now Draco was awake at 2am, for the third night in a row, knitting furiously.

“And I thought he’d just bought the little sweater for Dog, and I thought it was sweet that he’d found booties that matched. But…but these all showed up on my doorstep yesterday, and they all match Dog’s things, and I don’t know what it means.”

Harry sat on Ron and Hermione’s couch, head in hands, a pile of knitwear on the floor in front of him. The hat, scarf and mittens had been on his front step that morning when he and Dog went for their first walk of the day. There hadn’t been a note, but the yarn was so distinctive. They could have only come from one person.

“Harry.” Hermione spoke gently, as if she had something important to say and didn’t know how Harry would take it. “Why would Draco buy Dog a sweater instead of just using a warming charm?”

“He said Dog was allergic to them. Said he checked on his first visit but didn’t want to worry me.”

Ron made a strange choking noise before excusing himself to the kitchen.

“Harry, charms can’t cause allergies.”

“But…why would he buy her a sweater then?”

“Harry…” Hermione looked at him softly, as if pleading with him to figure out what she already had. He looked again at the bundle of yarn on the floor, at the uneven stitches and slightly lumpy shapes.

“He didn’t buy them, did he?”

Hermione grabbed his hand. “No, Harry. He didn’t.”

“But, why?”

Ron’s voice came from behind them. “HE’S FUCKING COURTING YOU, MATE.”

Draco trudged up Harry’s front path. He’d promised himself after last time that he wouldn’t be back, but he’d gotten a text from Harry that morning asking him to come over.

He’d tried not to hope, tried to ignore the warmth swelling in his chest.

If Harry had figured it out, surely he would have said something before now. After all, it had almost been a week since he’d dropped off the knitwear.

He was so caught up in his thoughts that he didn’t notice the door opening, but he couldn’t ignore the exuberant ball of fluff jumping all over him. The exuberant ball of fluff wearing…a knitted bow tie?

“She was meant to give you this, but she was too excited to wait for me to tie it on.” Draco looked up from Dog to see Harry standing in front of him, a timid smile on his face as he held out a small roll of parchment. Draco took it tentatively, eyes flicking back to Harry as he unrolled it.

My owner is an idiot, but some would say that makes him cute.

Will you go out with him? Dog is optional on dates.

Harry rocked back and forth on the balls of his feet as Draco read and reread the scroll.

This was a terrible idea, he should have bought flowers or whiskey or-

Draco dropped the scroll, his face unreadable as he stood. Harry opened his mouth, unsure of what he was going to say, but then it didn’t matter because Draco was reaching for him and cradling his head and kissing him.

Maybe he hadn’t been so stupid, after all.

Unfinished Friday

Share an unfinished WIP! Thanks @skeptiquewrites 4 tagging me in yours 🥳 My main wip is anon but here’s something else I started working on a month ago. It’s titled Selfish, so I think it was supposed to be about Draco being selfish lol and also some surrealism/dream stuff. It’s been a while since I looked at it. No warnings I can think of.

“Harry Potter will solve all my problems,” Draco says. It’s a cold windy Sunday for mid-June, which should be the first sign that something is wrong.

“Why are you talking about me like I’m not here?” Harry asks. He’s sitting at a painting easel in the middle of the forest, wearing checkered boxers and a purple jumper that says, ‘Puddlemore United Nan’ in large blocky letters. The canvas is bare, but there’s red paint splattered all over Harry’s fingers.

“This is my vision, not yours,” Draco says, and the thick mud at his feet creeps up to his ankles.

“Are you sure about that?” Harry asks and presses his thumb to the blank canvas. “This is sort of fun,” he says as he leaves a single red thumbprint on the page. “I’ve never finger painted before.”

“You’ve got a shit definition of fun,” is all Draco can think to say because he’s starting to notice the rain. The rain is red, too.

Harry grits his teeth and punches his fist right through the canvas. It falls to the forest floor. “You know, you really piss me off.”

The gaping hole in the canvas is big enough to jump though. You can’t see what’s on the other side. Draco wrenches his feet out of the mud and dives into the hole head-first.
