ok im waffling on about fallout instead of having breakfast but i saw a criticism of how the prisoners were treated that's stuck with me.
spoilers!
so i think the criticism wasn't incorrect, per se: it condemned the way the show portrayed the vault dweller's naive intention to rehabilitate their murderous captives. it found fault with a common, and horrible, message that tv shows like to say, which is that carcerial violence and even the death penalty is the only effective way to deal with criminals, who are a fundamentally Bad category of human. im sick of that message too! but i think that wasn't what was going on here, actually.
so like, the vault dwellers had only ever experienced violent loss the once, and didn't really know how to cope other than denial and repression of the ordeal. but they were all hopeful and enthusiastic that their prisoners, the invaders that came to kill them all and take their stuff, could be eventually welcomed into the community as their comrades. the champions of this cause were nebbishy dorks and painfully out of touch academics. this is pretty normal for how prison reformers are portrayed, if extremely fucking annoying for those of us who ARE in favor of prison reform.
but so of course when the son of the former overseer, Norm, speaks up and suggests killing the prisoners, because why should they share resources with invaders who explicitly wanted to keep hurting them? why should they show mercy to their attackers? everyone is appalled by this suggestion. because they had to reinvent the whole concept of vengeance right then and there, because grudges and cycles of violence are anathema to a bottle society like theirs. they have been raised all their lives to forgive and forget and now, put to the test, they're recommitting to this ethos: get along, let the past go, look towards the future, believe the best of everyone.
but the prisoners die, anyway. the prisoners are killed with rat poison. and the thing is that Norm who suggested it didn't do it himself. and the prison guard who's blamed for it, even though she privately agreed with Norm that the prisoners are dangerous and unforgiveable, she didn't do it either. it's not a moment of triumphant, cathartic vengeance and it doesn't prove that there's no way to negotiate with terrorists and invaders but kill them like vermin because that's not what the message is meant to be.
the message is that norm stands there in the middle of these inconvenient prisoners, these corpses dressed in his own people's uniforms, and he looks at the new overseer. and he knows that she killed them, and she knows that he knows. she wanted him to know. this is her message and he's reading her loud and clear. and he doesn't look like a guy who's just been backed up by authority, who's just been validated in his desire for the ultimate control over those who have wronged him.
he's scared and pale and the music is ominous as fuck. and he's inside the cell, he's directly in the middle of it.
because what just happened is that he realized his entire society is being held prisoner, and the overseer is the one with the rat poison. and that he doesn't know, anymore, what freedom and safety and justice actually mean, just that he doesn't have them and he doesn't know where to find them.
that's what that scene meant. not that rehabilitative justice is a pathetic delusion of people who have no idea how to make hard choices.
but that before you advocate for killing prisoners, you might want to see how big that prison is, first.
and which side of the bars you're standing on.

Continuing my hc that Tomura and Deku have the same age difference as the Shigaraki brothers (five years). I'd say it's likely AFO vaulted Yoichi when he was around 20 (Tomura's current age) which is the official age of adulthood in Japan and at which a person is no longer subject to parental authority.

Janvier — Les Étrennes (January — The New Year's Gifts). An adorable Paul Gavarni print that I believe is circa 1833-1834 since it appears to be from Gavarni's own Journal des Gens du Monde. The Boston Public Library has a better-quality version dated 1839, but in black and white.
- Tiens, Virginie, voilà du sucre pour tes étrennes.
- Et moi, mon bon Henri, je t'ai acheté un joli chapeau pour moi
Here, Virginie, here's some sugar for your New Year's gift.
And me, my dear Henri, I bought you a pretty hat for for me.
Besides the obvious joke of "I bought a gift for myself to give to you so you can give it back to me," a giant sugar loaf? Weird but practical at least?? (Unless it's mostly for Henri's use).
Their sleepwear is so cute. The nightcaps! Her little neckerchief!

started a rvb rewatch and I'm remembering the pain of just how little there is to work with when it comes to ct and her personality while simultaneously being reminded about just how deeply she and wash mirror one another
#she and wash have a lot of symbolism going on w red and blue lighting that i just never picked up on fully#ct is the type of character who easily shows her anger and frustration#wash is the type who lets his anger boil underneath the surface and doesn't outwardly express it until its already too late#ct often lashes out verbally vs wash lashing out physically#ct worked w charon bc she was hoping to make a deal to stay out of prison#wash made a deal with the chairman to get out of prison#ct died trying to do the right thing#and wash planned on dying to do the right thing#there's also them being “the worst fighters”#ct went toe to toe against lina for a bit. wash went toe to toe against e-tex for a bit#ct is openly very sus#wash tries to make himself /not/ sus#oh there's also ct knowing exactly what tex was while wash tells alpha that tex was confusing#wash cares about the rules/protocols when it comes to people getting just punishment. ct cares about ppl getting just punishment#they are at their cores the same#gdudfghghti I'm having so many feelings about these colorful halo guys#anyway i stand behind my hc that ct gave tex the data bc wash was waaaaay to obvious#and that ct wasn't sure if she could trust tex in the slightest to do the right thing with all of that data#she had to have faith just like wash had to have faith in caboose and the reds in s6#their decisions to have faith did end up backfiring on both of them though#ct obvs got killed by tex and wash got thrown in jail bc caboose didn't turn epsilon over#oh and wash stole church's identity and ct got her identity stolen by the innie leader#the comparisons are endless I'm going to stop now lol#ct is more or less just s8 wash#edit to clarify on the hc bit: i don't think ct trusted tex as a person but bc of what she knew about tex she believed it was important to—#give tex the choice to make a decision about what to do herself. and she trusted that tex would do right by alpha if nothing else

it's time for these two to answer some questions!
first of all, they will be answering 15 questions. i checked the canon prisoners' interrogations again and i noticed that for some reason haruka and yuno's t1 interrogations had 30 questions, but all other prisoners had only 15? so yeah, we'll be going with 15 questions to make my job easier jdkdldld.
most questions were taken from the canon interrogations and i came up with some questions as well.
these interrogations will reveal some info about the prisoners, like their families, friends, interests, what they did before arriving in milgram, etc. most questions and answers aren't that deep, however, some of them may reveal something about their crime that hasn't been mentioned in their mv or voice drama. it's up to you to figure out how important their answers are though <3
now, if you're wondering, can these characters lie in their voice dramas and interrogations?.. yes, they can. it would be too easy if everything they said was true, don't you think so? don't worry though, what they say is true most of the time and some characters will be completely honest with you.

Q.01: Tell us about your family.
Akio: Me, father and mother. I'm an only child.
Aimi: Dad, mom, grandma, grandpa, my big brother and me! I love all of them a lot!
Q.02: Do you have any pets?
Akio: A pet hamster. Mother got him for me because she wanted "to help me feel less lonely" or something like that.
Aimi: Two dogs! They're so big and fluffy, I love them!
Q.03: Are you in any school clubs?
Akio: I left archery club after the president had to transfer to a different school and others refused to let me take his place because "I was too young". I wanted to join a different club but.. other students wouldn't let me for some reason.
Aimi: I tried to join many clubs in the past, but they always either had "too many members" or I was told that I should pick a different club that would be better for me :')
Q.04: What's your type?
Akio: I'm okay with anyone who's loyal enough to follow me everywhere and do everything I say. If they praise me a lot, that would be enough for me to become interested in them. I just want someone who can see how talented I really am.
Aimi: Huh, I've never thought about it before.. Honestly, I think I'd just want my partner to be my best friend too. It would be nice if they could protect me in case something happens, haha..
Q.05: Can you speak any language other than Japanese?
Akio: English and Korean. My mother is half-Korean, so I guess it's one of the reasons why it was easy for me to learn it.. It's not like I'm not smart enough to learn it without anyone's help!
Aimi: No :(
Q.06: Are you closer with male or female prisoners?
Akio: I hate all of them, but I always end up spending a lot of time with Kuroki for some reason. Guard 001's older brother also keeps trying to become friends with me. So.. Male prisoners, I guess? Talking to female prisoners is boring anyway.
Aimi: I'm friends with everyone here!.. Well, at least I hope that they think of me as their friend too. I want to be friends with you as well!
Q.07: Would you call yourself a good student?
Akio: I was the best student in my class, I thought you knew that.
Aimi: Not really :(
Q.08: What's your favorite food?
Akio: I didn't have much time to eat because of school, so I guess I'm okay with anything (something is crossed out) my mother cooks.
Aimi: It's hard to decide.. I'll go with sakuramochi!
Q.09: Do you have any hobbies?
Akio: .. Shouldn't studying be enough?
Aimi: Origami and watching movies with my big brother! Drawing is very fun too, though I'm not that good at it.
Q.010: Did you have any friends before Milgram?
Akio: Of course I did, didn't I tell you I was the most popular student in my school?
Aimi: .. I want to believe I did.
Q.011: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Akio: Someone famous and respected.
Aimi: I've never thought about it before and I don't really care.
Q.012: Are there any prisoners you can't stand?
Akio: Most of them, but especially Hanasaki and Yano. Himura is annoying too.
Aimi: What are you talking about, I love all of them!
Q.013: Do you have any special skills?
Akio: Honestly, the fact that someone as perfect as me exists can already be called a special skill.
Aimi: I don't think so? My classmates always told me that I'm good at making them laugh though.
Q.014: Would you say that your mental health is good?
Akio: I heard some guys from other class say that I'm so narcissistic, they thought there must be something wrong with me. Their words don't bother me, but the fact that my parents agree with them does worry me a bit.
Aimi: Umm, maybe? I wouldn't say I'm depressed or anything like that.. I have a loving family, two adorable pets and lots of friends, why would I be sad?
Q.015: Between ethics and emotion, which do you prioritize?
Akio: Emotions are useless and ethics don't matter to me. I just do what I think is most logical.
Aimi: I think both of them are important in their own way. I hate to say it, but sometimes I'm not the one who controls my emotions and it's actually my emotions that control me.

Writing a story that revolves around teen heroes growing up and having to exist in an adult world with problems that can't be solved by punching is really funny because every single character can be placed into one of the following two groups:

every other week or so im struck with the powerful urge to become an editor on the limbus wiki. its been an uphill battle every time i see smth that i know and isnt on there or that could be fixed. but holy shit would i never do anything else
#i cant imagine how much context i could glean if i knew korean btw#in japanese they tend to have a lot more distinct dialogue quirks so its easier to tell who writes the flavor texts#(i am in camp 'every single description comes from a character')#and also the amount of Theory you can get from comparing what lines stay the same in each language. or comparing nuances in word choice#so many of my thoughts are wondering which parts of each translation were truest to the original text#like. in english theyre 'sinners' but in japanese they're 'prisoners'#in korean is it a word that means both? or maybe there's a specific connotation they're going for?#japanese has a regular ol' word for 'sinner' too it's very much deliberate methinks. were i a stronger man id be picking up the duolingo#anyways can you tell its my first day back on the adderall#tumblrs lucky i usually dump this on the discord friends the blog would be flooded#nightmare nightmare nightmare#post edit just something interesting but did you know in the bull observation logs one of the lines is pretty clearly rodya in japanese#but the english version of the line is almost certainly heath#weird innit#edit 2: theres a couple more instances of this (albeit less apparent) which is leading me to think that in the original texts#rodya and heath have similar dialects and the translators went with one or the other. interesting to consider the distinction between#a deliberate translation choice and simply separate people making their own interpretations. much to consider
