for the third week of @shepscapades ’s hermitcraft character design event, i offer grian as an empires smp member!

ok so first off, that head. thats just p03 from inscryption. but grian. it fits! but also! go play inscryption go go its on sale Right Now (until june 30) go play it its so good then go watch this video afterwards join my fandom please please please join us

ok back to hermpires! so i originally was gonna take an empire from s2 and just insert grian into it, but while browsing through the esmp s2 wiki i came across/remembered hermitopia and my brain went yep! this one. so i thought a bit about what grian would do if he was an empires smp member and how hermitopia would happen, and i think grian would crash the economy on purpose. i mean it almost already happened when the hermitpires crossover happened so i dont think im too far off. i think grian originally exported something simple, like maybe sugarcanes or mud, something easy to farm yknow, but then i dunno got bored or something so he made a couple more farms. then kept making more farms. then the hermitopia we all know and love happened!

actually maybe hermitopia isnt grians first empire. i think grian has a separate empire but decided to invite his friends to help him make some farms and then it just kept going. then hermitopia happened. i like the collaboration aspect of hermitopia so i think thats how that happens. hermitopia isnt necessarily grian's but its under his command so it gets called his. (isnt there a word for this? was it vassalage? i think its vassalage)

with that in mind i went with a robot-y grian because grumbot and a snazzy cool suit because business man (sidenote im looking over my pre art notes and one of them is just capitalism man and. yeah! not wrong). i gave him more steampunk-y wings than the usual feathery ones cause that fit better. i gave him a crown not really sure why but it fits since without it the design was more Just A Guy but with it he's more Emperor yknow. the buttons have a g on it because he would and an (attempted) gold trim cause that looked nice and fancy. originally he was gonna have four wings cause fun fact four wings is part of my base grian design but four wings kind of crowded the drawing so i didnt include them (sad) and i also didnt include the tail hes supposed to have because i couldnt find a good way to add it in with the pose. but in my heart he has both four wings and a tail

*sighs loudly* so i Was going to draw them but turns out my own design is too difficult for me to draw. but i'll be making this post anyway bc this au has been cooking for so long i might as well!

Featherless Flight AU

aka dca avian au where these fucks r BIRDS

(disclaimer this is a sun x moon au. it also deals with heavy themes such as child abuse, death, violence, and. ya know. wutever tws come with the apocalypse (also these will not be talked about in detail in this post))

nothing robotic in them. just feathers, blood, and bones. a lot of that stuff may be lost or break throughout their story! but lemme at least tell u wut they look like (without having my own drawings OTL (i only have a ref for their faces (which im not confident of)))

a quick note for both of their designs, they r both Fully Covered in feathers, including their arms and faces (yes they have arms And wings). the only places that dont have feathers is their lower legs and hands. they have anthropomorphic legs. and their face shape is also similar to a barn owl, as shown here (ignore the lack of mouths, idk wut to give them)

suns design! he has the coloring and general design of a sun conure. hes full of bright reds and yellows, tho the green is replaced with a bit of blue. he has multiple crests around his head that fluff up similar to a cockatiel but theyre in a way that make it look like rays. in the drawing above is wut they look like without their crests raised; that is their default. suns feet r grasping feet which r 2 toes in the front and 2 in the back. sun has high speed wings so aes a lot faster. (if u dont know wut any of this means i recommend u look it up, im a bird nerd) sun is also specifically an omnivore (them having different diets is actually plot relevant)

moons design next. moon is the color of a hyacinth macaw tho his anatomy is closer to an owl. he has one large crest on his head like a cockatoo. its also colorblind! since its anatomy is based mainly off of owls, for moons ability to see at night means he can see less colors. and bc hes more sensitive at night his eyes r always half closed in light, making it look sleepy despite being fully awake. moon has raptor feet with 3 toes in the front and 1 in the back. xis claws r also much larger than suns. moon has passive soaring wings which is better for longer flights. and moon is a carnivore :)

theres also an eclipse but their design is an enigma to me even in my own mind

but back to sun and moon! if anyone is curious moon uses he/it/xe pronouns while sun uses he/it/ae pronouns. they r both aroace and love each other deeply (qpr babyyyyy). sun is genderfluid while moon doesnt give a shit (agender).

sun is more bubbly and energetic. very much high energy bouncing off the walls. hes the kind of optimist where u cant tell if their "bright side"s r trying to help or be condescending. its a master at back handed compliments. heavily a perfectionist and will reach the point of screaming fits if wut he doesnt isnt perfect. ae has a lot of self image issues. ae hides a lot of aers lack of self confidence and doubt behind a wall of "im the best", tho that wall can crash very easily. a bit of a flirt, but mainly bc he just enjoys seeing how ppl react. he takes compliments from everyone but moons compliments r always the best

moon is lower energy and calmer. at least, he acts like it. hes more reserved and if it wasnt for sun he wouldnt have any friends or talk to ppl at all. he fears abandonment and sun is the only person who has stayed with him this whole time and is the only person he truly trusts. is very aggressive towards anyone it doesnt know. despite being shorter than sun (hes 6ft while sun is 7ft) it definitely does a good job at intimidating ppl. over time when xe becomes comfortable with someone xe will eventually calm down and show a bit of a softer side to them. when xes actually calm and likes someone xe can be a bit... chaotic :)

im honestly not sure where ill start their story since ive already thought about their childhood but i also wanna write about their adulthood as well. the story of their childhood mainly deals with the abuse they went through, then with adulthood theyre shoved into an apocalypse bc... y not :) (btw the apocalypse is mainly just bc ive been enjoying apocalypse aus a Lot lately and wanna write one. the child abuse is for their development and to show y they act the way they do. while it will be fun to write their development, i am by no means saying abuse is okay and this topic will be treated carefully and seriously.)

the first 2 eps i thought it was fine, but it didnt really captivate me as much as id hoped. but then ep 3 changed everything for me. i started to think "how could living armour work logically? everything so far has been edible, so this must be too, right?" i actually managed to think of the exact thing that this series did. that really made me realise the worldbuilding in this was something unique, and it only got better and better with each episode. its really managed to captivate me and i look forward to "delicious donderdag" every week :)

ANIME ORIGINAL LETS GOOOO absolutely bonkers show that almost slipped by me because it initially tried to fool its audience into thinking it was a regular dramatic military show. it still is but theres also a giant robot who plays by saturday morning cartoon giant robot rules. if that sounds like tonal whiplash to you, trust me, it is. and its amazing. have i mentioned how homoerotic this one is as well? yeah. originally a tier below this one, but immediately after finishing this post i watched the newest ep. i had to make an exception and edit the list because ep 9 changes everything. i havent been gobsmacked by a show this hard in a while.

(return of the) show(s) that execute their own premise very well;

i havent read the manga for yubisaki to renren so i cant compare, but the quality of this adaptation has been very consistent. you need a little sweet romance every once in a while :) this is one of those series where the characters really grew on me the longer it went on. im always a fan of mixing realistic struggles with romance and this one has been doing it well so far

adaptations that are ok (i read the manga for both of these);

i've been a mashle fan since before s1 aired. and the anime has some good changes and additions here and there! but its not very consistent in terms of quality, it does that shonen thing where the animation quality suddenly spikes for certain action sequences, but it also frequently had a lot of scenes where they recycle shots a lot and nothing interesting happens on the screen for a considerable amount of time. still! its a fine adaptation. and yeah the op for this. blew tf up lmao? very strange to see happen in real time

i actually rlly like the manga for this one. i read the whole thing up until vol.6 before the season started (all that was available back then) and it made me cry multiple times throughout. i was sort of missing that connection with the show, though some of the later episodes still hit. its mostly to do with the animation quality, which isnt that great unfortunately. the voice actors are knocking it out of the park though

i was so beyond excited for this one. i replayed the op a million times, watched each preview, rewatched multiple episodes. and then. ep 5 happened. and i started to realise. oh this show kind of sucks doesnt it? the pacing of the first ep was great, but the rest? way too fast. it became clear with ep 6 that theyre trying to do a double cour show with half the length, which is why they started hauling ass plot-wise. now. i was an arajin apologist for the longest time. but at that point i honestly started to loathe him. even when he stepped up, his praise still felt sort of unearned. and to top it all off, shindou's motivation sucked so he felt like a lousy antagonist. ep6 was better than 5, but it really made me lose my enthusiasm and hope for the series. and right as we were talking about them probably not having time for a filler ep, ep7 happened. feels like a waste of time to do an ep like that when you've still got a whole 2nd arc to go through. but who am i

it started off pretty good honestly. but then chris went to the hospital and it kind of just dwindled from there. this season does so much with characters that have not even been properly introduced like how am i supposed to care about these people if i barely know who they are. the stuff with finn and leo respectively was good though. but the lore dump? lord help me. also vijay just kind of. exists to be there in the background huh? i would not call him a main character they never give him any attention. wendy had another ep again and he didnt get shit. again. also i think finn was stupid as fuck for not listening to lala but again. who am i. i know we cant destroy high card because we need a show but. cmon man.

they're just vocal synth characters so there aint much lore besides like some flavor text/settings decided by the authors of the banks. but u can basically turn the real-life meta arnd them into lore lmaooo. adachi rei is a robot that's actually being built out of a dude's home thru crowdfunding (love you missile). utane uta (more popularly, defoko) is the standard default VB that comes w utauloid, the voice engine they're both on

so see the whole motivation behind shipping them is that rei is the only other voicebank to have no actual voice provider besides defoko. they're both completely machine synthesized w/o human samples, and defoko's flavor text also says she's a bot so there's so much fuel arnd it lol (esp. in regards to them being robots). personally for me too the idea that it took the only other provider-less vsynth 11 years to come out after u is so. rei having come out in 2019 and utau itself being out since 2008. they've got a jaded senpai-rabid kouhai thing going for me as a result, amongst other things. u can extrapolate a lot of fun details from actual community meta like this

other than that your best friend is fanwork and songs! i'm a huge fan of sho (FRAYLOVEBOT)'s few pieces of work for them and it rlly informed my view. quick search of レイウタ on twt will also net some interesting stuff. there's also the songs kikaijima and satsurikukyo that got mildly popular (there's a translation for the first song). theyre the basis for a lot of reidefo work... but ur imagination is ur limit really. most of the meat is on twitter unfortunately but i'll try my damnednest to reblog some stuff here too

Why do you think that is? - honestly i dont think about this nearly as much as i should because its such a good concept. i think theyve definitely encountered eachother before (like Long long before. maybe during fl4ks archivist days. personally i think since zer0 and fl4k are both nonhuman they r probably significantly "older" than the rest of the raiders at least like..physically? if that makes any sense. YAAAYY TIME TO TALK ABOUT TAG FORCE 6 LESTER!!!!

yeah ok so he doesn't actually kill anyone in Tag Force 5, his personalized route is effectively "WOW this child needs to be medicated" and he psychologically torments Akiza at one point, but it is remarkably murder free (the same. can not be said of Jakob's route Where He Fucking Kills Lester and Primo and You Just Have to Sit There and Watch. GOD) Also sidenote Lester's endroute png is sooo so cute ;__; the text is a little harrowing but don't worry about it.

APORIA only does a kill at the very end of his TF6 route, when he INADVERTENTLY KILLS HIS FUCKIGN HUSBAND AND CRIES ABOUT IT AND I EXPLODE TEN THOUSAND TIMES!!!!!!

BUT ANYWAY. TAG FORCE 6 LESTER. AGAIN, NOT ONE OF THE MAIN TIER CHARACTERS. IN THAT GAME. so like his final heart event starts the same as Primo's, but he duels Yusei and Crow instead of Yusei and Akiza, and he doesn't actually kill anyone like Primo does (though he does threaten and taunt them as the Ark Cradle manifests)

and then when you actually go up into the Ark with him he immediately starts Saying Things That We Get a Little Scared Over

^This is why it's such a pet peeve of mine when people seem to assume the Three Emperors either A.) are humans who were turned into robots or B.) are partially human/flesh and blood cyborgs--it's a pretty fundamental part of them that theyre NOT human, or even really "alive" (in their personal views, anyway!) youre trying so fucking hard to set up this unit spin off. im going to be horribly honest with you: i dont really care, and i think this is such a corny way to do it. i think torchwood (the show) is something people see with rose-tinted glasses a lot of the time, but i do think its slower introduction to the characters, completely isolated to its own tv show, made more sense. i feel like this weird vibe of just setting up these big personalities who all neatly fit into the exact archetypes you'd Expect... i dont know. i dont care for any of them. i love big weird non human robot-adjacent entities and i dont even care. and that fucker has cable-like tentacles too. i should be sold.

i think its also cuz they are like so obviously these Scifi archetypes for shows like this which is fine but leading first with a quickfire round of rather than getting a softer introduction to them just sort ofmakes them feel like fake cartoons. i think thats sorta why ive never truly warmed to paternoster gang too.

like i think my issue - and im welcome to be proved wrong, whenever we do get this unit spinoff - is i feel like its leading with the idea of "i want a spinoff" first rather than an attempt to fill a specific niche or hole for stories. i feel like sja and torchwood were both very specifically shows that would be in the universe, but would cater to things that would not suit the proper show, and had their own cast driving it.

ok so i know none of this is crazy news to anyone with a working brain but i want to feel smart for using my brain and thinking for once

me rambling about the imagery used in ATARASHII GAKKO!'s MV Tokyo Calling under the cut :o3

– just as a baseline for my rambles, the song (i think) is about how many people in japan live boring lives just for the sake of being able to pay their rent, and how that shouldn't be the case

– the choreography in the video oftentimes resembles the wings of a bird, an animal associated with freedom and peace

– the kaiju, as i'll be referring to the giant versions of the girls, are the only characters who do the dance mentioned above. i think they're potrayed as the monsters and "villains" of the MV because freedom is the exact opposite of what big corporations want

– idk what to refer to them as. i guess the heroes? but when the girls are in costume, i think theyre meant to represent those in higher power. they're depicted as the heroes because of this

– they move robotically in comparison to the kaiju girl's more fluid movements, again representing how the latter are living more freely

– this ones a bit hard to explain but!! to me, none of the poses they strike while in costume have that same synchronicity that the kaiju girls do in theirs

they're spaced out, each of them doing their own thing, while the pose the kaiju are doing looks to be more of a group effort. probably just a coincidence, but i think this could show how people have to band together to accomplish smt... could also show how the people in power do nothing to help eachother at the end of the day

– i was gonna make a point about each of the girls having a red leadership armband when in costume, but i remembered they have them even outside of costume,, i guess it still works if you see it as both of the groups having some sort of influence over the population

– i'm also aware that the school uniforms are their usual getup, but in the sense of this video i see it as being about how the youngest people in a society are usually the ones to step up against something

– their costumes still resemble their original school uniforms. i think thats meant to represent how their innocence and freedom was taken away while working in their jobs,, neither this nor the point above are probably that deep but. lol!!!

– there's a group cheering for both parties near the end despite of the opposing roles that they play. ofc this is a sweet little scene to show how just a few people's efforts can inspire others to do the same :o3

– in this scene, the kaiju immediately accept this and celebrate along with them, but the hero girls look almost shocked to be included

note that they didn't do anything to stop the kaiju at all, so in a way they did help and thus are deserving of the same praise as the kaiju

– wrapping up my thoughts now!! i think the fact that all 3 groups shown in the video are potrayed by the girls shows that its up to the person themselves to take action. nobody is gonna do it for them
