so peter and reader are best friends and reader always talks about how much she loves spider-man and peter always rolls his eyes and acts annoyed even though deep down it makes him happy. then one day reader was walking at night when she got like robbed or something and gets saved by spider-man. he swings her to someplace safe and when she calms down she starts freaking out that she met spider-man . you can add more but idk i’m not good at this but that’s jus like an idea??

“so you don’t think it’s like, a fifth date kind of revelation?” you asked peter as the two of you walked on the pavement. when a reply didn’t come out of your best friend, you looked to the side, only to catch him giving you the same look of exasperation, “what? oh, come on. i’m not in love with him!”

“you’re in love with him.” he concluded, “why do you even wanna know who he is?”

“i don’t know, i’m just-”

“in love with him.” peter reiterated, forcing you to give him a glare to shut up.

“curious.” you said, rolling your eyes.

the two of you walked in silence for a while as you made your way towards delmar’s deli. you had decided to go to peter’s for today’s study session and you were ready to eat off his ear again talking about spider-man. and he knew. he’d seen the new video of himself– the link to which you’d sent him– fighting off four guys at the same time.

you kept him updated on spider-man and even though he pursed his lips and rolled his eyes whenever you started getting all giddy about the new news, the only people who knew you had a crush on peter– well, spider-man– were himself and ned.

after getting your favorite sandwiches, you both made your way to peter’s place, a few blocks away. once you were inside, you made a beeline for his room, setting down your backpack on his bed.

“that’s new.” peter pointed, noticing the pop socket stuck to your mobile cover. you looked at it and nodded.

“there was only one left. i had to buy it.” you grinned as you sat down, pulling out your books.

“if you would just admit it, you’re obsessed.” peter chuckled, sitting down beside you.

“am not.” you raised your eyebrows.

“are too.” peter retaliated, making you roll your eyes at him again, “come on, it’s not a bad thing.”

you shrugged, “i just admire him.”

it was pretty late at night when you left his place, may was yet to come back and you missed her trying to make you stay for dinner. putting your hands in either pockets of your jacket, you began your walk to your place.

but just a few blocks down and you spotted a man in dark grey hoodie and torn jeans. you tried to walk past him but got worried when he started following you. as your steps quickened, his did too. just as you were about to run, the guy held your arm, pulling you into an alley.

you were shocked, he had pointed a knife right at your exposed neck. you tried not to move as he gave you an intimidating look, “hand me your money and we’re even.”

you trembled, trying to open your mouth. your mouth came out shakey, “p-please, i have nothing- j-just books.”

you felt the cold metal pressing against your skin, the slightest sting on your neck as you gulped, closing your eyes as tears pooled in them.

the next few seconds were very confusing. you were free, the pressure on your arm and disappearing as you heard a ‘thwip’. the knife was yanked out of the robber’s hand, and he got a kick to the side of his rib, making him fly further into the alley.

you gasped as your saviour landed in front of you, robotic eyes squinting at the guy, “come on, dude! ‘no’ means no.”

he yelled towards the guy before turning to you, noticing the tears in your eyes, “hey... are you okay? ...miss.”

your mouth opened, then closed. then opened. then closed again.

“it’s okay. i think you’re star-struck.” he tried to ease the tension. you noticed he moved his hands a lot.

“um... thank you for... knocking that guy out.” you wiped away your face and touched your neck, feeling the smallest cut, “i wasn’t planning on getting killed tonight.”

“you should clean that up.” you noticed he moved his hands a lot when he talked. it made your heart flutter a little. on the same night, the superhero had managed to save your life and make you feel all warm just by being the way you’d imagined him from the youtube videos.

you nodded at him, “i will...”

“you can call me spider-man.” he shrugged and you liked the idea that he might have been smiling at you under the mask. you noticed that he was making his voice sound thicker, putting on a heavy accent, but you tried to ignore it, following that he was in a full body spandex suit.

“i will, spider-man.” you smiled back.

“i... could walk you to the home.” he offered, almost immediately adding, “just to make sure you’re safe!”

you nodded your head, “well, unless you have to go save someone else...”

“i’m free for now.” he chuckled as as started leading the way.

as the two of you walked, a silence overtook the atmosphere. you tried to scan your brain for something, just so you could avoid the awkwardness, “i’m a big fan, by the way.”

peter wanted to laugh at your giddy voice. he’d never heard you be this shy around him– which, now that he thought, was making him a bit jealous of his alter ego, “thanks! just doing my job as the friendly neighborhood spider-man.”

once the two of you had reached your apartment complex, you faced the superhero, “thank you, spider-man.”

he did a little salute with two of his fingers, “glad to help.” and with that he took off, swinging away from you.

you sighed softly, feeling a little disappointed at his departure. you went inside and texted peter immediately– characters mismatched and all caps as you typed– ‘THETES NO WAY YPURE GONNA BELIEVE EHAT HAPPED!!!’

peter chuckled, watching the texts come through on his screen as he sat atop your building.

the brunette sighed softly, “man, tomorrow’s gonna be a long day.”

• But every time someone asks for advice you give them an answer and it always comes true out of convince! You promise!

• You were even popular because most would consider you handsome, your slicked back hair and magician persona made for a good eye catcher.

• Every time someone has a problem, you fix it. That’s who you were to the sonic crew!

• To sonic however, you were a pillar of some sorts.

• Sure you had more bark than bite but you proved yourself useful and caring of others, and sonic admired that!

• However, everything goes downhill when Dr. Eggman unleashed his newest robot that captures tails and cream.

• Though no one expected Dr. Eggman to throw everyone back in time to The Big Apple, everyone caught wind when you couldn’t predict Dr. Eggman releasing a newer and bigger bot that managed to catch Tails.

• Everyone you knew had become stressy not knowing what would happen next.

• Well, everyone except Sonic and co. (i.e; Tails, and Knuckles)

• Chaos knows they always have their guard up.

• But that was besides the point, point is, when everyone had been betrayed, lied to, and/or resented you (though not many) Sonic stuck around through and through.

• Everyone knows Sonic isn’t afraid of not knowing what will happen next.

• His unshakable confidence has the charming nerve to infect you to the core, and even changes you for the better.

• learning new spells and tricks, you have your own way of changing (though not many would bother to care after your unintentional scam, a win is a win in your book!)

• Now as for Sonic’s form of romance, let’s just say it isn’t as “romantic” as many (and myself) would like to admit.

• Sonic would actually be very nonchalant about your new-found relationship.

• Sonic is a naturalist at heart, so even if it’s a stretch, sonic loves to enjoy the sights (even if you aren’t there with him) but who knows! Maybe he might treat you to a nice coconut from green hills or even share a chili dog.

• An endearing trait of his I reckon is that he definitely teases you, though depending on which sonic, he might tease you more or less than the other characters (I.e; sonic boom sonic vs. Sonic movie sonic).

• However if we really are desperate for a certain blue-hedgehog’s affections, I think I’d be adorable if he had a thing for collecting various flowers from a shrub or something small-scale.

• Not only that but he’d be more than willing to take naps next to anywhere, on the beach, in a hammock, in a bush, but the strangest place you two were found was on top of a skyscraper in the middle of New York!

• Not to mention how soft your fur is, perfect cuddle material in his opinion! He also sometimes uses your overgrown ears as a blanket when it’s a bit chilly out.

• I’d like to think he also admires your latest magician skills, sure he’s not one for over-the-top romance but he’s gotta admit you’ve got a good grip on your flirt game for a guy so shakey.

• he wouldn’t reciprocate on your advances though. Or at least not in an obvious way.

• A few things he’d do to show (small) signs of affection is take note of places or things you like for a small trip or gift.

• Another thing he’d do is carry you bridal-style which might be a bit selfish on his end because he usually does this the most when you are in danger and need a quick pick-up compared to others where he just picks them up, throws them, and/or drags them.

• I don’t think he’d make a scene to others about you two being boyfriends either. Like if someone brings up a topic about relationships or whatnot, sure, he’d bring you up.

• Sure Amy would be disappointed but everyone else was mostly confused.

• To be fair, you two weren’t really seen as all that close. In fact, they rarely see you two together.

• The only times you two make any form of contact is when you need Sonic’s help with a villain, or when he shares a (few) snack(s) with you, or when you two are cuddling in an odd disclosed area and- ohhh.

• He isn’t flustered easily either, but one thing he goes absolutely weak for is the rare chance you make a grand gesture during a fight.

• Like if you had to make a risky distraction on the dime, sure Sonic wouldn’t be a blushing mess, but he’d be lying if he said he didn’t think you looked good jumping into action like that for him.

• But one thing he’d never admit is that he thinks your bunny traits are adorable, like when you scrunch up your nose when something makes you anxious, or even when you thump your foot when you get frustrated with something or someone. (It especially happens when he teases you, so he teases you even more)

• He may not be the most romantic boyfriend, but damn is it hard to be mad at him.

Desperately scanning the room, Austin locates a large trolley holding an AED, alongside an array of other equipment. He quickly wipes the foam from Kerians mouth before pulling the trolley over. Pressing a button, the AED emits a tone followed by a monotone robotic voice - "Attach pads to patient's bare chest". Austin tears the included package in half and pulls the pads apart, positioning one just above Keiran's left pec and the pressing the other against his ribs on the right. Plugging the wire into the machine, Austin is commanded to stand clear as the AED analyses Keiran's erratic heartbeat...

"Shock not advised, continue CPR."

With those words Austin jumps back on Keiran's chest, fuelled by desperation. The boy's ribs bend beneath his hands as his chest is repeatedly assaulted, each compression forcing a faint whisp of air from Keiran's mouth. After 30 chest compressions, Austin once again seals his mouth against his boyfriend's lips and blows a deep breath into his lungs.

The AED breaks it's silence with a tone followed by "Shock advised, do not touch the patient". Nervously, Austin places his finger on the shock button as the AED charges. A few second later, he releases the shock.

Keiran's slim body jerks as his chest twitches, his arms slightly bouncing at his side.

Analysing...

Shock not advised, check for a pulse.

Leaping towards his boyfriend, Austin harshly presses two fingers into Keiran's neck and is met with a faint pulse.

"I knew you could do it Keiran!" He whispers, lifting Keiran's limp torso in his arms and holding him close, feeling the boy's shakey breath against his neck.

Holy Shit, Worldbuilding?

I do my worldbuilding on the fly so it's definitely shakey. So awhile ago I did a whole like blueprint thing for Digits prosthetics. I've been wanting to do something similar with Donnie but that's a lot of machine. And I was reminded I never really did XD so have a very very simple write up/summary of some of the tech stuff in Robots & Gardens so far.

Reoccuring in-world tech

Teched shades/Teched glasses ->

Pretty fucking common. Some people possess modded versions. You don't buy them modded you pay someone to mod them or you figure out how to yourself. Kinda like the equivalent of jailbreaking and modding a nintendo device (side tangent fuck nintendo).

They started strictly as business/work wear before coming to the public. For example I mention a sort of equivalent Digits and other construction workers have. It's work issued and they're actually safety glasses. So less customizable quirks. But work grade at least for the construction workers (and probably a lot of other trade work but we're gonna stick with construction right now) allows them to see plans, estimated scheduling, and general blueprints or schematics if needed. All visuals can only be seen clearly by the wearer themselves. From the outside the lenses tint. So you might catch light either on their face or peeking through the lenses but that's the most. Also massive rip if you need prescription lenses to see. You're either wearing contacts, going blind, or hoping a pair of prescription glasses can fit beneath.

For everyone else they are styled more like a very standard pair of glasses. There's a couple generations of them. With the most recent generations you can actually get them with prescription lenses (but you'll have to pay a shit ton more and it can damage some other functions. Mostly cosmetic but you can view things (news, shows, shit on the internet, etc), you can talk to other people (like calls), it can play music. The speakers are kinda shit though lol.

Lenses ->

Lol so yeah this is literally just contacts. Arguably far more dangerous and a risk than glasses. These are prescription and they are teched. Really simple advancement and not very widespread. Supposed to help with seeing in darker locations as well. Valuable for Hollis since she's technically doing illegal work and does have terrible vision. They can cause extreme eye damage. Great for precision jobs. They can cause extreme eye irritation and can blind you. The tech in the lenses can cause your eyes to appear another color. (Part of the reason why Hollis' eyes appear blue/blueish sometimes. Her natural eye color is brown).

Vapes ->

Lol they function just like normal ones. No one smokes tobacco really. They want death aggressive, fast, and fruit flavored.

Prosthetics ->

Very important. And hella reoccurring. A lot of people have them. Some people do by choice. But most don't, very common to have workplace accidents. Or to just need a modification for a job which is partially how we get to Donnie. They can vary a lot and the upkeep is costly. It's a whole business at this point the healthcare part has been stripped away from this common facet of the world. As in it's not always gotten out of benefit for the patient themselves but often encouraged and required. Through health they've gotten prosthetics more mechanic. Easier to mimic original human counterparts (human mobility is a wild thing y'all).

Filters/Filtration ->

I haven't dived super deep into this. Just know it's important and necessary. So people in smog ridden places (Which is a lot of places in this story) can breathe in their homes. And minimize some air contaminants and respiratory problems. Heavy on minimize cause it doesn't completely stop those problems.

Donnie's shit in particular

My beloved cyborg got a lot of shit going on. Please know that cyborg's are a rare phenomenon, his mods and prosthetics are top of the line because he works security, and he can only maintain them because of his economic status. But even then it's still a strain. On top of this he is mute which is a whole separate thing. It's not because of the prosthetics or anything. While they have some "fixes" they could've done for this they didn't want them.

He can sign but doesn't do it often because it's kind of a dying language in this world. And screen readers struggle capturing and understanding it. Most forms of communication with other people is gesturing and body language, typing/writing, or whistling (more specific situations for that one). But there's a secret here I am actively unclear how much of Donnie is machine and how much isn't like all the time. Which I kinda am pushing onto Donnie himself as well. I still have stuff to figure out about him lol.

Keyboard and holographics/projections ->

Strictly for communication. The keyboard is built into his arm. It's not a mechanical kind of keyboard. It's more of a projection with sensors tracking pressure? Or maybe just when their fingers go through certain letters of the projection. The keyboard has adjustable heights to make room for the words being written to be visible.

Can sort of broadcast/share screen the words as he's typing them to teched glasses. Got a finicky piece of tech on his collarbone. Should work through the synthetic skin but it doesn't (something he probably won't get fixed). Pick at the synthetic skin, move it aside, slide a finger over something (didn't make it specific it's literally just exposed tech 😅😅) and it'll share the words as he types.

Rando stuff that probably isn't set in stone

Since he's security and just has better/and more expensive prosthetics some of the overall force comes from hydraulics. Can produce a lot more pressure, force, and speed.

The lights you can see beneath his skin are mostly cosmetic. Some have purpose but Donnie definitely doesn't know which ones.

Donnie does in fact break their mods and prosthetics all the time. Very injury prone. (This one is set in stone as of now)

Donnie can have machine parts break in a way that damages human parts of him. Like if an insulation or hydraulic fluid line somehow breaks.

He can overheat. Maybe even a bit easier than some other people. Because he's so much machine and it's harder to regulate temperature with extremities gone. Has some resistance to colder temps though. He only sweats through places with actual skin. I haven't figured out if he has an internal cooling system. But he probably should. Just a rudimentary one cause I am not giving myself or any in world builders of Donnie benefit of the doubt.

Shuichi Saihara

When you first started dating, Shuichi was still really self-conscious about himself, and was worried about his impression on your Dad. So when he asked him to help with his driving test, Shuichi thought it would be a great way to bond. Thank god he wasn't wearing his hat this time, cause it would be gone by now. I'm talking it would have flow into the Atlantic ocean by now. Your Dad was absolutely insane behind the wheel, and Shuichi didn't need to be the Ultimate Detective to know that. He desperately grabbed onto the seat to stop himself from flying away. The majority of the time he was silent, but at the last hurdle a giant scream rung out Despite feeling like the world was spinning, Shuichi actually made a good impression on your Dad! He was super thankful and appreciated Shuichi's help. With a shakey hand, he gave a thumbs up, dreading having to do this ever again

Gonta Gokuhara

Car? What's a car? Gonta has never even been in a car his entire life, even when he went to school. He always just walked everywhere, that's what he was used to. So when your Dad asked him to join him on a driving test Gonta was happy to assist! He really wanted to make a good impression on your father, and wanted to prove he was worthy to be your boyfriend. Oh dear god get him off this thing- For a first experience in a car, this was NOT ideal. Your Dad was infamously known in your family to be an erratic driver, and Gonta had never even been on a roller coaster before. His heart nearly jumped out of his chest as he gripped on anything he could grab onto. So many screams almost escaped his throat but he was trying soooo hard to not be rude! Gonta is a gentleman, he can handle this! Yeah, at the end when your Dad thanked him, he gave a weak smile and nod, legs shaking. When he offered to drive Gonta home, he QUICKLY declined and said he'd walk! For the next few months just the sight of a vehicle made him break out into a cold sweat

Hm, riding in a car, huh? Kiibo never really had to ride any vehicle or public transporation before, so this was a new experience. He had a minor moral crisis (a robot in a non-conscious vehicle? Is that appropriate, does he need to ask it's permission?). With your Dad's reassurance, Kiibo was able to shake it off and join him! If he had a heart, it would have lept out of his mouth at this point. The constant road bumps and sharp turns threw his systems out of wack. It felt like his eyes were spinning in their sockets. He kept trying to give feedback and tips, but every movement quickly shut him up in fear. He managed to be quiet at the beginning, but near the end he couldn't hold in the screams anymore At the end of the drive, Kiibo managed to realign himself and give some good feedback. He made sure to make notes on the speeds your Dad was going and the angle of his steering. Your Dad nodded his head and took notes, grateful for the input. After he got home, Kiibo pretty much collapsed into your arms (thankfully you didn't fall over from the weight of his metal) and nearly cried. He was pretty sure it was retribution for entering the car without it's consent. Just hold him for a bit, he'll get better

Kaito Momota

Driving lessons? Hell yeah he'll join! Kaito was already good friends with your Dad, so helping him with a driving test was a no brainer. Not to mention he's gonna be an astronaut, he's gotta get used to G-Force. Let's go! Oh lord. Oh lord oh jesus. Kaito is a brave boy... BUT NOT A BRAVE ENOUGH BOY FOR THIS- Sure, he isn't great on roller coasters, but he never expected to experience anything like this in his life. For some reason it was even worse! Probably because one wrong wheel turn and they could be dead. Unlike a lot of the others, he did NOT hold in his screams. Kaito was screeching at the top of his lungs, mouth foaming The moment he stepped out of the car, Kaito collapsed onto the ground. Feeling the sweet sweet earth was comforting. After thanking him, your Dad tried to console him, but Kaito insisted he was fine. He just needed a few moments or else he'd probably throw up. Thank god rocket launches are this bad! ...right?

Kokichi Ouma

Kokichi doesn't really give too much a damn if your Dad likes him. It's a nice bonus and makes it easier during family events. But even if he didn't like him, Kokichi would date you anyways. When your Dad asked him to look over his driving test, Kokichi decided why not? He was bored anyways, might as well do something to pass the time Okay, so he was fine... at first. For the first half he was actually having fun! It was kind of like a roller coaster at an amusement park and it was super exciting. He had his hands up and everything, laughing like crazy. That all came to a sudden halt when they were 1 second away from crashing into a tree, only saved by a sharp turn. Now he was scared. Kokichi realized that this wasn't safe fun anymore, his life was in the hands of an inept man. For the rest of the test, he was crying and screaming in fear After the test his face was covered in tears, and was left sniffling like a child. Your Dad asked if he was okay, but Kokichi did what he does best: lie. Nah, he was totally fine! All that crying was just a joke. That answer satisfied your Dad, but inside Kokichi was still shaking and scared

Korekiyo Shinguji

The thought of a man his age not having a license intrigued him. Most adults earn their license early in their development, usually at age 16. When your Dad asked for Korekiyo's help, he happily agreed. It would be a great way to study and inspect your father, and get a good read on your family's history and behaviors Jesus christ. Korekiyo has never experienced anything like this before. Let's be real, he is a kinky bitch, he's used to getting thrown around. But whiplash is not sexy! His body was as stiff as a board the whole drive, in fear of losing a limb. He's never thrown up in his life, but this is definitely the closest he's gotten. At first it was mildly interesting, even humorous. But at this point Korekiyo's plan to study and inspect was thrown out the damn window. All he could think of was the inevitablity of meeting his dead sister in the afterlife After the drive ended, and his life was spared, he let out a sigh and loosened up again. Your Dad thanked him for the company, and Korekiyo humbly accepted. At the end of the day he realised he didn't learn a damn thing about your father or your family that whole ride. Maybe it should stay that way

Rantaro Amami

When your Dad asked him to help with his driving test, Rantaro happily agreed. He had a good relationship with your father, and felt this would be a great way to get to know eachother. Drive around, chat a bit, have a good time Rantaro is a chill man. Nothing really fazes him, and even if it does he's pretty good at hiding it. This was no different, but fuck it was the hardest situation he's ever encountered. His mouth was tightly shut and his eyes wide open. He tried his hardest to initate a conversation, but every bump made his mouth clamp shut. Even if he got the words out, there was no way your Dad would hear, he was too focused on aceing this test At the end Rantaro put on a good facade of calmness. Your Dad tried to apologize and see if he was okay, but Rantaro brushed it off and assured him he was fine. The day ended on a good note, but Rantaro was sure he'd never drive with your Dad again... at least until he got his license

Ryoma Hoshi

Ryoma was fine with being a passenger. Your Dad was trying to get his license at a higher age, that's admirable. He can't really reach the pedals on a normal car anyways, so Ryoma thought it couldn't hurt to try out a normal sized car for once. Can't be that bad right? This man already knew he was going to be dead soon, he now accepted this car would be his tomb. Death Row was a distant dream, his body will be found in a pile of scrap metal. With every bump they hit, his body would fly up off the seat, only saved by the seatbelt. Ryoma was completely silent the whole time. There was no point in screaming Even when the car stopped, it took a hot minute for Ryoma to even get out. It took your Dad calling his name to break him out of his trance. His voice was calm when accepting your father's appreciation, but inside Ryoma was still ready to shake hands with the devil. He loves you so much, but that day it was tested

I knew it was ~problematique obviously but still I had managed to preserve only my favourite bits in my mind and convince myself the bad bits weren't as pervasive

the eleventh hour still has an incredible charm to it that I am not immune to. parts of it were deeply magical to me even all those years later. I remember whole sections by heart

the chemistry between 11 and Amy is both deeply exciting and incredibly tender. instant and extremely powerful.

For the five ask game: how about an au where each holder of one for all are able to swap bodies?

This was previously unknown because, y know, most of the other wielders died pretty much instantly after they handed the quirk over. So a fun surprise for Yagi and Midoriya

1. Ok, so the trigger to swap needs to be something that Nana and Toshi didn't activate it in their years together, so I've decided the users have to mutually want to be where the other is. That's the only reason Toshi didn't switch into Nana's body at that last flight with AfO, because Nana was standing her ground there.

2. So decades later, as Izuku stares down a lake full of villains, he really wishes All Might were here. Back at UA, as Nedzu continues his lecture to Toshi, the hero really wishes he'd had any time and could be at USJ. And then suddenly he is, in a tiny body with a broken hand flying through the air with two of his students.

3. Izuku gasps in pain and tilts over, Nedzu asks "All Might, are you alright?" Izuku gapes at him in his two wrong body, but then says "USJ is under attack, they- we need help!" With a few more shakey breaths, he manages to stand and adjust to the pain. One For All feels far away from him now, Nedzu immediately gets one of those giant robots to carry them to the USJ, while the rest of the teachers hurry over too.

4. All Might is extremely confused as they land, and wonders if he's dreaming until he sees the Nomu over Aizawa and moves, One For All flowing through Izuku's body naturally under his order. Shigaraki is extremely taken aback by a tiny green kid as strong and as fast as All Might.

5. He's even more taken aback by the robot lifting part of the roof off the USJ itself and telling the villains to surrender before Nedzu asks something to All Might while the mic is still on. Toshi realizes what's happening and that he needs to be back in his body, and Izuku wants to be in his too, so they swap back in a blink as the other teachers burst through the front door.

Simulations of Cybernetic Meadows - Recreating Life

Part 1 - History of Technology

The New Yorker recently put out a great article, covering the modern day conversations we're having about how "lifelike" AI systems are:

It's a great article, which covers a lot of modern discourse around the last 25 years around how we've attempted to make "lifelike" machines. In an age of incredible speed and velocity in progress, we often forget how things have ended up this way. If you look, it turns out the quest for lifelike machines has been going on for a lot longer than people might suppose.

1st Century Antiquity - Age of Inquiry - The Mortal Hephaestus:

When people think of lifelike robots, they often jump to the robots of the 20th century. The past, however, is deep and full of secrets for those who know where to look.

Hero of Alexandria was a master craftsman, and mathematician, famous for one of the world's first steam engines, and Heron's formula for calculating the area of a triangle. He also created some of the first known humanoid automata.

This video is slightly misleading, as it shows a combination of his efforts, and that of another, but Hero himself was able to create moving automata that used weights as potential energy to drive wheeled devices around a room. The Herakleidon Museum does also have videos recreating his original mechanism.

The Greeks were, in particular, prolific in their creation of automata which mimicked life.

18th Century - Artisanal Age - Dreams of Automata

The writer is a mechanical automaton, created in 1770, by the aritst Pierre Jacquet-Droz. It is a marvel of early engineering, using a series of what are called "cams" to direct a machine in the shape of a child to write sentences.

It combines the mechanical aspects of writing, with the aesthetic appearance of a child, in order to create a work of art. It is also one of the first programmable machines, using a series of replacable letters to change what words are written.

But machines with lifelike qualities are not just limited to human motions. Master British automata makers John Joseph Merlin and John Cox created an astoundingly lifelike rendition of a swan in 1773, which preened its feathers, and caught fish from a pond.

Both of these devices were driven by the creation of advanced clockwork, and machining technologies. As with today's semiconductor revolution, clockwork started off the size of rooms until it was progressively miniaturized into the palm of your hand.

While the 18th century artisans and mechanists were able to create wondrous mechanical motions, they were not truly able to replicate the mechanics of "thinking". The writer is one of the few examples of programmatic "thinking", but cannot independently operate.

20th Century - The Cybernetic Age - Adaptation and Evolution:

The advent of thermodynamics, and the rise of electronics, led to new means by which to create "living machines". In the 20th century, it also led to differing approaches to simulating life, such as cybernetics and expert systems. Walter Grey's tortoise robots are a great example of the cybernetic attempts to create complex behaviours by using simple rules in the form of both a light and touch sensor.

This robotic tortoise was able to exhibit very lifelike behaviours and reach goals without explicit instructed programming, such as with The Writer automaton.

This is a key "adaptation" and evolution from the concept of an automaton. Whereas automatons had simulated the mechanics of life though motion and muscle, robots such as the tortoise started to simulate the mechanics of thought through electronic wiring and circuitry.

The rise of the integrated circuit, and transistor, has been key to allowing modern automata/robots to reach advanced levels of ability unthinkable in pre-modern times.

Shakey represents another branch of 20th century robotics, the expert system, led by ideas similar to the 19th century automata, but updated exponentially. By using several sensors, Shakey was able to navigate around rooms and create internal representations of the rooms it was in, in order to perform objectives.

21st Century - Age of Artificial Neural Networks - Memory and Thought:

Similar to the age of automata, we have entered another age of biomimicry, this time using Artificial Neural Networks. Instead of attempting to replicate the mechanics of actions, we are instead attempting to replicate the organic mechanics of thought. One of the key ideas behind life is that it is self-sustaining - it operates all on its own. 18th/19th century automata weren't able to do this and 20th century automata/robotics did to a certain extent, but were often still viewed as machines with function.

Sony's AIBO represents a more "lifelike" kind of design - where the entire system is driven by "curiosity" rather than by specific instruction. While it posseses some subroutines, similar to its 20th century counterparts, it surpasses them in how it can also adaptively learn new behaviours to better suit its surroundings, both in practical settings (finding its way around) and social settings (recognising people, and interacting with them in a socially "successful" way). The fields of reinforcement learning and artificial neural networks allow for complex behaviours to be simulated for the first time. Sony's AIBO is an excellent example of this in practice, with the robotic dog able to learn through positive reinforcement verbally, or via tactile methods, to promote certain behaviours.

It can even use computer vision capabilities to recognise specific users on sight, as well as allowing it to create its own internal model of the world around it. Much like the 18th to 19th century automata, AIBO also attempts to replicate the actions of life itself, with its design, and actions, replicating that of a puppy or small dog. Unlike the automatons of old, however, the use of tactile, vision and sound sensors allow its form to play some function in its operation aside from aesthetics.

Cybernetic Meadows - The Future?

As we endow robotics systems with ever greater ability, how will we interact with them in the future, and how lifelike will they truly become? Humanity has always, in some form or another, sought to replicate life itself through the medium of art and engineering. Only in time will we see the results.

Saw Monkey Man and Mars Express in the same day.

They're both beautiful films, fresh original stories in long established genres that have very clearly learned from their predecessors, and have a ton of parallels and reference to the classics, without being derivative.

I'm less familiar with the revenge-rampage action movie, but Monkey Man is very Hero's Journey, Dev Patel's character is a man with no name, archetypal hero. In a good way, it's very by-the-books; inciting incident, entering the strange world, first encounter with the villain, death and rebirth, there's literally a goddess.

Again, I'm not that well versed in rampage revenge, action, beats-up-everyone movies, so I recognize Kill Bill, which is itself direct homage and remix of a bunch of things. Movie shouts out John Wick by name. I saw an interview clip where Patel talks about The Raid (I still need to watch that one). The violence is gruesome and visceral. The fights are mostly legible and impactful, but it is also kinda video games. There's a lot of up-close shakey cam, and it does get a little tiring like watching some one else playing a first person game can be.

Mars Express is a science fiction detective story, and I know more points of reference there.

This one I'm kind of anxious about over-hyping. I think you can pretty easily tell if you like the kind of movie Monkey Man is and you'll have a good time. There's ways Mars Express might not land for some people. It might be kind of weird, or too specific an art style, might be too slow and methodical *

I went in with kind of middling expectations, and found it a really satisfying watch.

It kinda has everything:

The most obvious, it's got some Bladerunner, it's got some Asimov robotic's laws, there's Cowboy Bebop vibes, definitely some Nueromancer, there's some shades of Martian Chronicles, there's Ghosts in Shells, there's Robot Cops+, oh there's some Cronenberg flesh monstrosities, there's some Electric Dreams, there's weird robot sex.

It's serious, and moves at a steady pace, but there's also a good current of humor and satire throughout. There's brief moments with exceptionally dark implications.

It does a lot for me when I feel like the world building of a story is well considered. When I can tell the creators thought about not just how speculative elements would function and interact, but how characters in that world would relate to and think of things, I really like it.

The first character the movie introduces is a robot, that speaks with a very human voice, that's got just an edge of Customer Service Brightness to it, and it pretty succinctly tells you kind of a lot about how a character like this moves through this world.

Hesitation.

That is the first emotion coursing through his body, a wariness to accept an offering so simple and yet, so important. Any time someone has offered a hand to Rhys, it has led to a tragedy in some form or another. They fear what will happen if, yet again, a hand is imprinted within theirs. Eyes glance between the offered hand and to the person doing the offering, the way xe looks at Rhys with a hopefulness behind those eyes. A hopefulness that Rhys wants too.

At first he goes to give over to xem the silver mechanical hand, the robotic part of himself. It is a suitable offering, perhaps. A form of distancing, people do not get hurt if it is separated from him. But he halts, brow is lowered and furrowed at his own decision. It's rude, wrong. This isn't how he wants the story to go. No hiding, no burrowing, no pretending the hurt can just stop. Rhys needs to face it all head on.

It may well be the common denominator in the past experiences wasn't him, but his affiliations. Maybe this time, things can be different. Xe is giving Rhys an opportunity, to do something better with his time whilst Atlas rebuilds. And with a promise as deep as not letting go... His mechanical hand withdraws, replaced by his left hand. The one that still makes him feel real.

Taking Micah's hand into his own, Rhys can only give an affirmative nod. Their voice shakey, unnerved and anxious about what is to come. ❝ Better not break that promise, okay? ❞ Silently, it is followed by a singular thought. ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ( because i'll cry if you do. )

Pikmin 1: (Human's age: 17-18)

Olimar: More like a father to them. After he saved from the shelter they were trapped in, it was a moment of excitement, then confusion as they first met. At first, they didn't know how to communicate with him, because they assumed he would have a different language than them, but Olimar could understand their language, so they communicated that way. After they explained their situation, and Olimar explained his, they decided to help him search for his ship parts, despite their lack of knowledge of the outside world. Olimar, feeling bad about the human's situation, accepted their help, and also offered to help teach them some of the main skills needed for survival for as long as he would be on the planet. As the days go on, he does indeed teach the human how to survive while they help him and the Pikmin find the missing ship parts. In the world were they successfully fix the Dolphin, they say goodbye until they meet again.

Pikmin 2: (Human's age: 21)

Louie: At first, shakey start of the friendship, then really good friends, then it gets shakey again, crashes for a moment, then gets back to being friends again, but Louie is kinda obsessive over them cause they're kinda like his first friend/person that isn't part of his family that he cares for and its kind of a scary friendship. After Louie starts crashing down onto the planet's ground, Arcadia/Spruce follows him to where he is falling. At the first moment, they don't know how to speak to him, due to him seeming to be asleep, but when they approach him, he abruptly sits up, spooking Arcadia/Spruce. When they ask if he's okay, he hesitates but then nods as a sign that he is ok. Arcadia/Spruce is happy that he's okay, then they get the signal from the Freight ship asking him if his senses are fully 'functional.' (Hehe, robot pun) After he confirms his shape and walks around, Arcadia/Spruce follows him to help him find what he's looking for and helps him learn about the Red Pikmin and the Onions. Then after finding Olimar and flattening the Paper Bag blocking the way, they gather the battery they found and carry the battery to the ship. How they became good friends was because the human brought up the topic of food when they were exploring around together while looking for Olimar and Louie was paying attention to every word they said. Especially when they talked about the food that could be made from the creatures of the planet.

Sancho: At first, they didn't know who he was and assumed he was a good guy, but as soon as Olimar said that he was the guy who sent him back to the planet, they pulled a complete 180° and started yelling at him. Sancho took their yelling as a showing of gratitude though, and 'hired' them to be the 'Official PNF-404 Bodyguard and Treasure Collector.' Arcadia/Spruce attempted to yell at him again, but Olimar stopped them from yelling anymore, due to the fact they'd probably lose their vocal chords if they stayed there yelling at him the rest of the time.

Pikmin 3: (Human age: 24)

Alph: Literally that one friend duo that is "Innocent but Chaotic." They met after Arcadia/Spruce ran to look for help after Olimar got kidnapped by the Wraith and Louie ran away from them after realizing what Olimar was walking into, Arcadia/Spruce escaped from the Formidable Oak to go and search for help. Whenever they saw the Drake malfunction and crash to the surface, they followed the trail of smoke that was being left behind by the ship. When they find the Drake, they look nearby for any of the people who fell from the ship, only to find Alph knocked out in a body water. They dragged him out of the water, tried to tap him to wake him up, and even shook him to get him to regain consciousness. It worked, but after Alph fully woke up, he panicked out of fear of who or what they were. After a feeble attempt to calm Alph down, it surprisingly works, and Alph trusts the human, but still being cautious about them. When they find the Pikmin, Arcadia/Spruce asks if he has a whistle, and when he says yes, they tell him to call the Pikmin to him. They basically teach him how to use Pikmin as well like how they taught Louie, but they take more caution as Alph isn't a Hocotatian and doesn't know how to lead the Pikmin well. They became friends after Arcadia/Spruce asked to know more about the Drake and what it can do, and Alph just hyperfixated over everything it could do.

Brittany: Ladies, gents, and non-binary pearls, if you're looking for that one friendship that makes you think, 'I ain't never seen two pretty best friends,' here's the two pretty best friends. At first, when Brittany saw them with Alph, she thought, "WHAT AND WHO IS THAT!?" She was mortified because she thought the human was a monster of some kind, but after Alph explained what and who they were, Brittany still held up her guard, but calmed down. They helped Brittany learn about the Yellow Pikmin, then helped look for some fruits and spoke about the seeds in the fruit and what could be made with the fruit and the juice, and then talked about some of the fauna on the planet. They got along nicely, and Brittany sometimes does the human's hair before they go out on expeditions.

Charlie: He is literally like the grandpa that Arcadia/Spruce wishes they had. After he was saved from the Phosbat's belly by the crew and the human, he played it cool before asking who they were. Yes, he was terrified of them, but after being told that they were a good human, he was alright with them. When they heard some of the stories that he told the crew about how he went on many dangerous adventures before this, they were interested in hearing the stories he had. Sometimes, when the human gets sad, he'll share some quotes of inspiration or just tell them stories to attempt to distract them from being sad. It works sometimes, but sometimes it doesn't.

Pikmin 4 (Human's age: 20-22)

Dandolimar: Still like their father figure, just taught more about Dandori. Same way of how they met Olimar, just with them failing to help him find the ship parts and finding Moss. After they found him on the ground, his space suit damaged critically. They were worried that he was gone, but Moss with the group of Pikmin that they had with them carried Olimar to the Onion, anad then he was Leafified. After that, they were happy that he was alive again, but he couldn't remember too much. He could only think of four things: The Pikmin, Moss, the human, and Dandori. Meaning he remembered that he promised to teach the human how to survive, but he couldn't remember what for. The human felt sad that they failed to get him off the planet, but Dandolimar could only try to calm them down. He did successfully and the human felt less sad about it because if he was okay with being on the planet, then they were okay with him being there. (Also fun fact: After that entire thing, Arcadia/Spruce put a stick with a leaf in their hair to look exactly like him and the Pikmin. Mostly so people would know that he basically raised them, but also cause they thought it looked fun.)

Louie: Lemme tell you, man for real just treats them more kindly than others, but when he abandons them, Arcadia/Spruce feels like they did something wrong. They meet him after they flee from the Rescue Corps when they recovered Olimar, they assumed that they would be in trouble or in danger if they were brought back with him, so they fled as quick as they could. After the Rescue Corps leaves the planet with Olimar, they meet Louie and team up with him to 'help' find Castaways that have been deathly injured. At least, they assume they're helping the Castaways. At first, they don't trust him, but after realizing he looks like he's a Hocotatian like Olimar, they slowly start to trust him. When they're defeated on the last Dandori Battle against him though, Louie flees on foot, leaving Arcadia/Spruce and Moss behind to deal with the Rescue Corps. Thus making their friendship a little strained.

Moss: Human's best animal friend. They met Moss with Olimar after she was fainted somewhere. Arcadia/Spruce searched for the treat, gave it to Olimar, and Olimar gave the treat to Moss. Moss is a big dog and the human is her secondary owner.

Pom and Oatchi: At first, they don't like each other, mostly cause Arcadia/Spruce thinks they'll try to do something to them and Moss. After they get recovered and are bought back to the Rescue Base, they basically are the two friends who just talk about their dogs whenever they can. Oatchi absolutely loves to play with them and Moss. Pom also understands them even with their kinda jumbled up sentences. (Example: Pom: "So how was your day?"

◇A/S: "So cool! Day gave big searchings! Found tiny bug creatures and really, REALLY BIG bug creatures!"

Pom: "Really? What did they bugs look like?")

The Rescue Corps: They met when Arcadia/Spruce and Moss made it to the Corps. Arcadia/Spruce thought they'd be mad at them for turning Olimar and the other leafing Castaways into leaflings, but since Olimar explained their reasoning for turning the Castaways and him into leaflings, they seemed to welcome them with (almost) open arms.

Collin is just confused on what they are, but he treats them like he would any normal person. (Although Arcadia/Spruce acts more like a child, rather than their actual age.)

Shepherd thinks they're adorable. (in an innocent way) She likes how the human treats Moss and Oatchi and always plays with them before Pom heads out for an expedition. She's one of the people Olimar accidentally tells Arcadia's/Spruce's past to, but she knows it's probably supposed to be secret, so she doesn't tell anyone. She feels bad for the human, but she's actually happy that they're there.

Dingo is, in many ways, jealous of them. They act more like friendly rivals, kinda, but their 'rivalry' is only known by him and Pom. Arcadia/Spruce has 0 idea of the so-called rivalry and thinks it's just another way of saying that they're friends. There are times when he's nice to them, but only whenever they need help with things in the wild or whenever they are having trouble with anything around the base. Otherwise, everything is a competition when it comes to them doing anything. (Pom learned it after Dingo vented to them about how he was jealous of how the captain thought Arcadia/Spruce was adorable.)

Bernard just thinks of them as a cool little human. He respects them after hearing that they've actually helped out Olimar many times when he was in trouble as a leafling. (Also, the fact that they have a lot of energy when they run around the base just reminds him of when he was a kid. He was a really fast paced kid when he was little.) [At least, what I headcanon kinda-]

Yonny: They're afraid of him, since when they first met him, his first sentence to them was, "I wonder if you can survive being experimented on..." When that happened, they immediately started crying cause they thought he was actually going to experiment on them and possibly even kill them with the experiments. Yonny likes them though, even though he was banned from testing any experiments on them without their consent.

Ross's relationship to the human though is... what's the word?

Oh yeah-

a dumpster fire.

Honestly, the only reason it's bad is because of the fact he constantly talks about his mother(?) and how she spoils him and everything.

Note, if you take a moment to think about why this would cause problems:

Human's family was killed in the 'War of Humanity.'

They could've been friends with Russ if he didn't brag about his mother a lot, but because of that, I'd see them just being acquaintances, but the human avoid every conversation with him.

Extras:

(All and in both the good end and bad end) Pikmin: They're like the family they gained after Olimar saved them. Sometimes, they'll play with the Pikmin or will even just have pretend parties for them. After the captains escape from the planet though, the human becomes their leader.

Snavi: In the good end timeline, Arcadia/Spruce finds a baby Snagret with the Pikmin after Olimar leaves and raises it to be a pet that also acts like a defense mech. The Snagret is like a Downy Snagret, but instead of it thinking everything is food, it just fights to defend itself, as it evolutionized to eat mostly plants or seeds. When they try to take care of it, it's wary of them at first, but when they find it a fruit to eat, it starts to trust them. After a year, it becomes a grown-up Snagret and basically aids Arcadia/Spruce when they summon it with a call they made for it when they need assistance or when they find food or it's time to rest.

(Welp, this took a whole day to come up with, and I don't know if I'm proud of it. [I'm proud. :)] But here's their relationships with the characters. I wanted to give the human a fair amount of good friendships, but I also didn't want to make them seem really dislikable because of the fact they have a lot of friends and nobody disliking them. Arcadia/Spruce in the good end's personality is the personality you'll see on a person that tries their best to survive while they also try to protect the ones they care about if they're around. In the bad end, their personality would be based around a person who feels insecure and feels like they can't do anything on their own because Olimar's 'death' would affect them like that because their main goal was to help him escape. After Olimar is revived though, they act more like a child around him, no matter if he's 10 feet away from him or even right next to him. But when they're with anyone that they don't trust, they're very bashful and timid around people they don't trust fully. So both timelines of the human are basically just opposites of each other.

Also, as a side note, from now on for future posts, I'm using Arcadia for future posts-

You can still call them Spruce, though. I'll understand who they are because Spruce is Arcadia's other name.
