Kai x Skylor: the two of them balance each other well, plus seeing Kai get all lovey-dovey around Skylor is just cute.

Fun fact, I used to hate Jaya. I thought it was really forced in the canon, and Jay's really obsessive behavior that is the catalyst for all of the events in Skybound always really bothered me? But tumblr has completely turned me around on this ship. They have their moments in canon, but in fanon they're really wonderful. thanks tumblr <3

lloyd and akita!! i'm gonna be so real with you guys i forget about akita so often ;v; which is a shame... i give her the award for most sidelined female character because she existed for half a season. but she and lloyd are sweet! I don't tend to ship lloyd with anyone personally, but i do love that they meet under the circumstances of "lloyd is in a world where his name and status mean nothing so he has no pressure to perform". it's a fantastic break for him. holy shit he deserves it

im gonna be so honest with all of you um. i actually. havent seen MotM yet. i was in the middle of my rewatch, and i got up to the point i stopped, right before MotM, and then Netflix changed their watch policies. and then of course i got busy

but from what i've seen of these two in fanon they seem alright! I usually prefer them in other wlw or mlm ships because of ONE ninjago vine compliation thing i saw with the two of them as this one tiktok and i've never been able to think of them as a couple since then. But they seem like they have a lovely friendship, whether that ends up turning to romance or not!

assuming he knows you wear it because you feel insecure, i think he would do his best to try to uplift you; especially if you guys are friends and/or partners! he cant stand the idea of you not liking yourself as much as he likes you, you know? makes it a point to tell you that he thinks youre attractive, as well as giving you extra affection... kind of goes overkill, will likely do way too much to try to cheer you up. like im talking he probably dedicates a firework show to you or puts your name in lights, stuff like that to let you know that he cares a lot... but hes got good intentions, i promise!

POMNI:

i think she would find out about the reason behind the box after you open up to her about it. she always just assumed that it was a part of your digital body... and it very well could be, just detachable, like how zooble can take parts of themselves off... not the best at comforting you and telling you youre pretty, but i think her awkwardness and stammering makes her words more sincere. they dont sound rehearsed and scripted, you know? it sounds more natural and earnest. you cant help but believe her when she says she thinks youre pretty, if you decide to show her what you look like under the box

RAGATHA:

also very sweet about it. does not ask for you to take off the box, but she does express that you can unwind around her... very reassuring whenever its brought up, in fact i dont think she wound bring it up unless you did, fearing that she would make you feel pressured to take it off. little scenario but i do think that if you took the box off around her for the first time she kind of just. doesnt notice for a moment before actually paying attention and she kind of just stands there and stares, before simply saying youre beautiful. doesnt make a big stink of it, you know?

JAX:

has probably drawn on your box at least once or put something on it (gum, stickers, slime, ect) but i dont think he would keep doing it when he finds out why you do it... though.... he does purposefully break gangles mask/steps on it so im not... actually sure about that. hmm... i think he would try to play it casual when you bring up your thoughts of yourself to him, though it may come off as him minimizing your feelings. to put it simply jax doesnt think there should be a huge fuss about it. i mean its not like its your real face... might lead to some conflict due to him not having much empathy, for you.. apologies to the jax enjoyers but i do think he would steal the box to try to prove that its not that deep

KINGER:

also thinks that the box is just a part of you before you fill him in on the reasoning around it. displays some brief curiosity before apologizing for prying. i think he would have a similar scenario to ragatha where he wouldnt realize that you took the box off around him for a minute... though unlike ragatha, he doesnt just say youre pretty. i think he would pick apart every part of your face and complement it.. though, i think he generally complements every aspect of you, face or not... you know? not quite as bold as caine, but just as much of a sap, you know?

ZOOBLE:

kind of understands, since theyre a little... complicated and they like switching out their parts to fit whatever feel that want to have that day. but im not sure how deep their feelings would go, because i can kind of see them being similar to jax in this scenario, but less of an asshole. they wont take your box, nor will they write off your insecurities because they actually hold some understanding to them. i think they would offer to help you find a look that you feel comfortable with, sometimes a little something can change a lot of things, you know? but if its something more deep rooted, they would let you talk about it... doesnt speak much on the box since ultimately thats youre business. though, you cant help but notice them complimenting your skills and talents more now that youve opened up to them

GANGLE:

i think she would relate to it. i recall seeing someone say that gangle isnt actually more confident and happy with her comedy mask, rather its a false thing to pretend theyre happy. and honestly, i can see it. id tag the person but i saw this a while ago and i failed to save it </3

moving on, i think she would find some kind of relatability in you. like sure, its not the exact same thing, but you guys are both hiding aspects of yourself behind an object. she wouldnt ever dare make you feel pressured to take it off around her. i think out of all the characters, asides ragatha, shes the best with making you feel comfortable. you can take it off around her when youre ready. i dont think she would flood you with compliments, but i do think she would do her damndest to make you feel good about yourself. leaves you lots of notes reminding you how much she values you + little doodles

Hi!!!! I've been reading through this webnovel after seeing @ot3's pitch for it and started writing down some thoughts on the characters and worldbuilding and imminent murdering. This story is very, very long and I only reacted up to about chapter 33, so most of my thoughts will involve the worldbuilding and less the murder mystery aspect -- so if you're looking for theorizing you won't find much of that here. Since I'll be continuing eventually, I wanted to post what I did make note of to revisit later!

Most of these are not marked by chapter/section because I was lazy and I'm not sure how easy it will be to follow as a result, but everything is chronological.

The visual I'm getting of the solar system/local system/dimension they inhabit is kind of a blend of steampunk and fantasy and uhh some secret third thing. With the walls of their "universe" painted in that puella dollhouse witch lair style. Does the sun bounce around like a screensaver. Does it orbit their earth or is it on a fixed axis flung out into “space”? Does “space” even exist anymore? I’m assuming they’re in an enclosed area that they've created. Do they actively use arcane resources to keep objects (ie star and planets) sustaining themselves, or have they made them self sufficient?

"prosognostic overlap"…do ppl repeat faces? Are most people cloned at this point? What triggered the need for cloning surely medicine is advanced enough that childbirth or test tube babies are feasible? Can bodies be cloned and reinhabited to inhibit aging? Is there some disturbing psychological element to seeing someone with the same face as you? Does it make your brain short circuit? Kam mentioned having children earlier which I assume means people still give birth or have test tube babies, so i don’t know if it’s the result of cloning…but it does sound like a sameface sort of thing. What else would it be if not that though?

Actually, if they’ve figured out teleportation (whatever it was called when they went up the aetherbridge) - let's say they can atomize a body and reforming it elsewhere (though we don't know for sure yet, could also be a fold in spacetime) - transferring consciousness to an empty clone of yourself (and therefore effectively doing away with aging or death wholesale) sounds a lot more efficient and technologically practical than maintaining an organic system that naturally decays. Why keep on finding ways to push the human body past its limits when you could simply transfer a person to a new, identical vessel?

I feel like the key to immortality isn’t maintaining an organic body, which naturally tends towards systems of entropy (being a biological thing, entropy=decay), but rather delineating and separating human consciousness from its host and replicating its original environment perfectly. I’m not talking about making a copy of consciousness, which is just glorified cloning - I’m talking about *transferring* a consciousness.

You could almost call dementia itself the mind's tendency towards its own kind of entropy?

Though if you transfer a consciousness to a younger body, the dementia issue could still potentially remain. Depends on if it the author sees it as a solely physical phenomena (atrophy/buildup of inhibitors of the brain) or there's some metaphysical anomaly about amassing too many memories/"existing" too long in general

The way spellwork is described is really cool and feels super believable. Optimizing multiple concurrent spells into one “function” is intricate and sophisticated, and you have to dedicate a lot of brainpower to doing the math in your head. It’s like they’re coding the real world. I love the way lurina describes this it's awesome.

PROPAGANDA

Saix

Ok so his story (chronologically) is that he was trying to save a girl with his best friend and got trapped in a basically-cult at the age of 16. And in this cult he and best friend lost ALL ability to feel emotions. For TEN YEARS. and the whole time he was trying to get closer to cult leader in order to find out about what happened to the girl, and it’s basically saïx and his friend against the entire world. When you (player character) meet him its after those ten years have passed and his best friend regained emotions and left him basically alone in this horrible situation and hes just so angry and betrayed and hes convincing himself that he doesn't care about it and ALSO hes like kinda 50% possessed by the cult leader in a way? and during this segment he’s basically the Worst Guy. Hes aggressive to best friends NEW friends and this leads to him kinda ensuring the destruction of both best friend and his new friends (he intentionally stabs best friend), so yeah. He sucks a lot. But fan interpretations are always “oooh saix did a BAD THING and thats bad so he should be put in a nuclear reactor” which ignores his situation COMPLETELY or theyre like “ooooh hes my precious baby and he was hurt :( he was sad and had no agency whatsoever :( so every character should forgive him immediately” which. Is almost worse tbh because he really did spend a whole game harrasing two 16 year olds for being friends with someone.

Six (long propaganda)

Once again (just like with every morally grey character I think) there's a war between "she's a monster" and "she's an angel".

Six, as a character, is very cool because there's no dialogue or anything in the Little Nightmares games, and a lot of things that are just not showed. The whole point is everyone can have their own interpretations and theories. But Six is just so disrespected by the fandom !

On one side, it's "she's a monster, we hate her, she's selfish and uses people to get what she wants !"

On the other side it's "she's a kid and my favorite character so by default she can't be a bad person, she's actually a sweet and pure angel !"

None of them are right.

For the first ones... Six isn't that much of a monster. And I'm gonna say it : yes, she is a literal kid. That doesn't mean she can't be bad, but she thinks like a kid. She probably cared for Mono before she betrayed him – we can see her trying to help him when he was in the TVs. She probably has a reason why she betrayed him. There's a lot of different theories on that and none of them is more valid than the others because again you're meant to have your own interpretation, so I won't tell any of the popular theories here. You can think she did it for selfish reasons. That doesn't mean she's a literal monster, and that doesn't mean the people who don't think it was selfish are mischaracterizing her.

For the second ones... I don't even know what to tell you. If there's one CLEAR thing in these games, it's that Six is morally grey and could do something scary at any moment. As the player you're literally MEANT to be scared of her and what she could do. In the first game you are meant to slowly realize her hunger isn't human. You can also see how she doesn't try to help any of the kids trapped here, she's just helping herself. In the second one she does scary thing all along the game to keep you scared that she could kill and eat Mono at any time, only for her to betray him in the worst way possible at the end. We don't know her reasons but she still did it.

Six is a morally grey character. She's just a kid trying to survive in a world full of monsters. She's also full of darkness, acts like a creep and eats literal people. You can't say she's "just a monster", the same way you can't say she's "a little angel who did nothing wrong".

(Different Propaganda)The whole thing with Little Nightmares is that the world is terrifying and horrible. It is eat or be eaten in the most literal sense. Six does what she has to to survive. Has she done some bad things? Yes. Was it her fault? …Debatable. But the fandom treats this CHILD like she’s the worst person to ever exist. Like, she’s not even ten years old. She’s a survivor. Mono did plenty of questionable things too, but I’ve never seen anyone hate on him.

s2e1 The '37s - amelia name drop idea, but no ones really thinking about it yet.

s2e4 Elogium - somewhere in here, kathryn confides in either Chakotay or Neelix about the name "Philippa" that Mark wanted to name a daughter if they ever had one. :) her and chakotay have that intimate little scene in her readyroom/quarters i think, and neelix is just on the fence about having children (until he isnt) and i think kathryn would maybe have a lil conversation with him about her and mark's plans for their future or something idk.

s2e7 Partriution - tom and neelix bonding, something something laying foundation for kid naming ideas that comes up later.

s2e15 Threshold - obviously where stuff goes down. some less obvious side notes i have on it are that the re-evolution happens between Threshold and Meld. kathryn and tom are aware of their children existing on the ship by Meld. also need to mention somewhere that i think Kes would be the one to suggest they use "Edward" for the boy's name, she tends to suggest the names of her relatives to the doctor, i think she'd just kinda one track mind it haha. and maybe neelix or tom would stink "Owen" 'cause Tom hasnt worked through his daddy issues yet. the more i've sat on the naming process ideas the less i like chakotay, tom, AND kathryn being involved in it lol. i dont think amelia would be an obvious choice to chakotay. MAYBE he's the one to suggest philippa if kathryn did tell him about the name's significance to her (or neelix). its not super important but its something i ruminate on. babies end up getting situated in chakotay's quarters. neelix and kes (mostly neelix) do a lot of the babysitting while the babies' parents are on the bridge. oh i guess also like, its REALLY conveniently in a scene showing that the spy on voyager is in contact with the kazon -> seska. so they're like, vaguely aware at this point of how the warp 10 experiment went,, probably are aware of the triplets being kathryn and tom’s. kathryn and tom are avoidant of their children. tom for his mentioned daddy issues, afraid he'll mess them up, doesnt know how to parent, doesnt want to, etc. kathryn has this huge complex about being unfaithful to mark and that being so visibly apparent to her with these children, ummmm i think shed also beat herself up about being the first to have children on voyager, what her crew must think of her, etc. (before naomi is even born!!! IDIOT) aside from her struggles with her appearance too like yikes girl, visible failure moment. ALSO i think deep down shed know (and even said in the ep) that she was the one initiating things down on the planet and that she wanted children and everything so shes gotta grapple with this act she somewhat knowingly performed and got a clutch of eggs out of haha. oh my gosh ALSO!!!! idk where to mention this but i REALLY dont think belanna would be that involved with the triplets like, all that much if ever especially in earlier seasons. doesnt really seem all that interested, you like, never see her interact with naomi (yes itd be cute but weird that it doesnt happen all too often if at all i cant think of any times rn). like her daddy issues are mad buried and tom's not interested, theyre not even dating yet!!! YES in later seasons i think shed dabble in it just as tom is, and maybe she even pushes him to because of how uninvolved her parents are! but as of right now shes like nty about it haha.

s2e16 Meld - conveniently you dont see kathryn on the bridge in this episode, only her senior officers are seen visiting her in like her readyroom and sickbay and stuff. she's avoiding the bridge for a bit post-Threshold because shes feeling a little insecure about things and hates the looks her crew gives her. but mean!tuvok in this ep does not pull punches and i think hed berate her on like, her avoidance of the bridge or w/e. maybe say the warp 10 experiment was a bad call and she signed off on it idk, she feels really vulnerable afterwords but its an ugly truth thing for her that gets her to overcome her trepidations.

s2e17 Dreadnought - its still early post-Threshold and kathryn's 100% okay with blowing up the ship to save lives and doesnt really consider her children at all.

s2e18 Death Wish - the first time Q tries to tempt kathryn with turning her human again. :) establishing Q being into kathryn while in her hyperevolved state.

s2e20 Investigations - tom has his arc of being sassy with chakotay and overall a bad crew member. add onto it with the au that he and kathryn are both avoiding the children like a plague and leaving chakotay to take care of them. really funny that i think tom walks in late to his shift and bragging/lying about delivering Sam's baby like YEOWCH salt in the wound for chakotay he sure wasnt that ecstatic about his own kids. MAYBE theyre sleeping with each other to relieve lizard tension. chakotay's not vibing this situation at all. so understandably the two boys are a BIT on edge with each other for a surplus of reasons both fake and real. seska gets to see hyperevolved TOM for the first time in this ep but not kathryn!!!!! like to think him and seska would have a little quip about being lizards lol.

s2e21 Deadlock - just another early post-Threshold scenario where Kathryn's not really lingering on her children being part of the equation still. naomi is born in this ep, thats something haha. this might be an ep where she starts to linger on it though, feels somewhat guilty for neglecting them. maybe her and her other self would talk about it before one of them dies.

s2e25 Resolutions - forced exposure therapy for kathryn!!!!! learns while on New Earth that she likes bugs. Unfortunate <3 she also discovers she has an instinctive fondness for heat; she keeps slinking into chakotay's bed to snuggle up against him for warmth, wakes up next to him its real awkward, both choose not to read into it in the beginning but hahaha im trash for bed scenes like that where chakotay stirs to leave and kathryn would squeeze him tighter or something so hell stay with her. ummmmm i think her and chakotay would argue a lot about the kids for a while, then after the storm she kinda changes her tune and FINALLY gets more involved with them. had a side plot idea that Ed gets sick and kathryn gets REALLY frantic about it, like as its happening and his fever's getting worse shes begging whatever deities will listen that shell change and do better for these children if they let him live IDK HAHA.

s2e26/s3e1 Basics - seska gets to see threshold!kathryn here for the first time and she can BULLY HER about it. >:) i wanna dabble with these eps like, THOROUGHLY and i really havent yet, but i think seska would get a little booty injured about chakotay choosing kathryn's weird lizard offspring over his own son. SPEAKING OF SON i love the kolopak stuff about fatherhood it compliments the AU SOOOOO MUCH bc kolopak's like talking about the illegitimate children of a tribe being taken in despite their heritage JUST LIKE HIM!!!!!!! like chakotay could easily be talking to kolopak about his struggles with caring for these three infants that arent even his or something. maybe its vague haha. but inbetween Resolutions and Basics, kathryn's DEFINITELY pulled back on all that growth she did, like its a little different, but chakotay's frustrated about what to do. ALSO minor thing, but kathryn gets to eat weird eggs and bugs in this ep for survival and gets to make her crew do it too and i think that's awesome. :) also tiny note that the planet they get stranded on is hot and dry and i think kathryn and tom and babies would struggle with that so i think she'd be grouchy.

s3e8/s3e9 Future's End - just have to start that this ep has its opening with janeway as her like practicing tennis in her room and saying she's out of practice and 5000% AU associate her rusty skills with having a tail. :) canon compliance kinda necessitates these episodes have kathryn and tom look like, normal human. :/ the AU has to compliment proposed/used/failed solutions down the line in episodes as they organically occur like Ashes to Ashes where that's their FIRST time testing something to try and make Lyndsay Ballard look human, which to me means they wouldnt have attempted it prior to that episode and its waaaay in season 6. theres potential like, temporary disguise/genetic alteration ideas too like what they do with neelix and chakotay in some episodes, but i dont think theyd be able to do anything about hiding their tails! and these are the eps where the holographic emitter is ESTABLISHED so they dont even have that haha. the solution that seemed the EASIEST to me is like, some technobabble explanation accompanied by the weird time travel shenanigans voyager experiences in these episodes causing their genes to revert BACKWARDS just like they do in time. :) so theyre like, legit back to normal for a bit. but the triplets remain unaffected because they were born that way. i think building up to these eps, kathryn's like DABBLING in parenting but kinda noncommittal. this is also around the time that the triplets would start i think likeee talking or walking? put a pin in it i guess lol. kathryn and tom are hyped to look like themselves again, maybe act a little overindulgent on earth, being able to not stand out and get weird looks and all that. was thinking maybe the babies dont recognize her when she looks normal and a part of her feels sad about it. eventually they turn back when they return to their own time.

s3e11 The Q and the Grey - Q being infatuated with the only hyperevolved lady in existence real? i dont have some of the important details and ideas figured out in this ep, only that i can have fun with kathryn getting turned human and chakotay getting hyperevolved for a time. :) was thinking that when Q takes janeway to the continuum, that's when she gets forcefully turned human, i think she'd decline if he tried bribing her again. subsequently ms. Q feels a little threatened by janeway and she agrees to work with chakotay to help win Q back. i think the idea i'd had was that she'd hyperevolve chakotay to try and get janeway interested in him and not Q but idk if i like that idea. or she just does it for giggles. ANYWAY janeway at this point is kinda over it in regards to getting turned human again, it doesnt work. i think she'd assure chakotay that he doesnt need to change for her. :)

s3e12 Macrocosm - liked the idea of kathryn being alone but finding philippa uninfected and crying somewhere in a jeffries tube or something so she has to carry the baby around while she saves the ship.

um. yeah. the war. it was like, a whole thing? i wont explain the whole thing here but like. generally enstars in its current state At This Moment has 4 primary Years to choose from

chronologically:

1. War Era

- in which the school is radically changed by an extremely passionate student council president in order to raise talented and unique idols. he does this via "war"

- usually referred to in flashback sequences.

- this era is never depicted as the Current Era in any of the series' 8 year lifespan.

2. ! era.

- this is the Present Day of the first game. generally the two main games are discerned between with the amt of exclamation points. its confusing

- main story follows a rookie unit into stardom by challenging what the student council president sets up back in the war.

- this era ends with a graduation event, and all students moving up a grade or graduating out.

3. !! era.

- the Present Day of the second game, which introduced 3D mvs and rhythm game aspects.

- the major status quo change here is that that old student council president has now started a large Production Agency Conglomerate, called Ensemble Square, that oversees all the characters and their units

- 8 new characters / 2 new units are introduced as they begin a new year. generally follows those two new units as theyre haphazardly thrown together and forced to perform, though has a good and healthy amount of content for other units as well.

4. Post-Grad !! era

- current day as of right now on JP servers.

- another graduation event was held back in march 2023 in which the second graduating class, well, graduated. everyone else moves up in grades as intended

- well, actually, just kidding? that Big Production Agency Conglomerate, Ensemble Square has now also absorbed the 3 named idol schools into the ES Academy. we dont know much about this currently tbh.

- honestly not much about this era in general is known. we havent gotten super important stories about the new school environment or anything yet to my knowledge. theyre still running stories and events that take place before that last graduation, or stories that dont take place at the academy (and thus we dont see it)

just. the whole thing is so well written. it plays with itself. one of my rereads was via my print copy of it and hussie talks about how the format of hivebent only works because it follows the established structure of the first few acts of homestuck. it makes fun of its own format and shitty structure and unfolds in such a cool way. and the characters holy fuck the characters weve already seen them but every single one is so richly characterized--even the flatter ones are immediately appealing and/or intriguing!!! theyre all so unique and distinct and yet the web of their relationships is so complex and yet casual.

like. the friendships and relationships make sense and theyre all connected in different amounts that makes putting them all in a story so cool. its like inviting all your friendgroups and the friendgroups on the outskirts of those ones that circle back to your own into a big discord server and then your one weird nerdy friend says ok guy2 iit2 tiime two play the game that wiil blow up the planet that my giirlfriiend 2aiid we 2hould play for game niight.

i actually do have a TON of behind the scenes/process stuff up on my patreon for $2. every thumbnail/color rough/scrapped page comp i've done is up there, and i've been writing detailed commentary on the comic as a whole because it's something people expressed an interest in reading. there's a decent amount of it right now and ill have a new batch of commentary up sometime in the next few days

as for more generalized stuff about process ill stick that here under the cut but unfortunately it is going to be EXTREMELY unhelpful because my process habits are very bad.

so as for prewriting/pre-planning i do almost none of it. i've been trying to get better at doing that but i get so so so bored of that so fast. here's a screenshot of my first outline, cropped to just show everything i've drawn so far.

as you can see this all means pretty much nothing and i also didnt quite follow it. we didn't get the mia and greg postmortem and swiss rolls stuff for turnabout samurai because i later decided to scrap it. later down in this document there are slightly more detailed notes about some specific scenes, but really its all super lose.

Recently i tried to write a more detailed outline for the upcoming parts of the comic, and the stuff that happened in this most recent batch of pages was documented there pretty well

but already the stuff i wrote in this outline for later batches is not accurate to what i want anymore so to be honest the outlines are kind of a wash for me. what's really the meat of my pre-planning process is i just have a private discord server where i dump notes.

the reason i use a discord server for this is because its super easily accessible from every device i have, and doesnt require backing up between locations. i also just dump chunks of canon text in there that i want to pull exact dialogue from when i'm doing my transcript rereads.

a lot of these notes are completely useless and redundant

most of them are snippets of dialogue i want to put in on later pages. almost none of this dialogue will ever be used. for starters, a lot of it is different takes on the exact same handful of scenes and so by default are mutually exclusive bits of content. i like to just dump as many ideas as i have in there even if theyre contradictory, and then just read back through and pick my favorite/most appropriate ones as i get to actually drawing whats coming up.

every now and then ill dump all this in a google doc and arrange it roughly chronologically so related takes go together, but i havent done that in like six months so its all just a huge mess right now.

the reason i can get away with such bare bones planning is because i have a very strong mechanical understanding of how this story is supposed to function. in the two and a half years that has gone by since i came up with the idea and started working on it, almost nothing has fundamentally changed in my big picture narrative goals. knowing the exact shape of what i'm building towards makes it really easy to let the more minute details come to me in the moment. they either are congruent with that end goal, in which case they can stay, or they're more extraneous/irrelevant in which case they get cut.

when i get stuck, more often than not i just slide into mia @demonkix's dms and make her hear out my rambling. thanks mia. shoutout to mia.

now, here's probably one of my biggest sins: i do not script anything. there is no finalized dialogue until i am writing it directly onto the page. unless i'm directly lifting from the text, that is. ill have a rough idea of what needs to be said in each page when im drafting, and sometimes i'll write in rough dialogue on the draft. but most of the time ill just sketch out the approximation of the speech bubble andd either leave it fully blank or jot in one or two keywords in to remind me of what the dialogue should be. then the actual dialogue gets written in once the art is finished

do not do this. i can not stress how frustrating this is for myself. i do this every time and i always hate it.

the reason i dont bother with any proper scripting is because the dialogue bends to the art. not the other way around. a massive amount of my process is dictated by what im in the mood to draw, and by keeping the actual character interactions as flexible as possible until the art is done, i can ensure i dont get stuck at key points because the thing that has to happen is something i dont feel like drawing.

in general, my process for drafting pages is just rough thumbnail -> color rough -> go actually draw the damn thing

however there ill be times when i just do not bother drafting at all and jump immediately into drawing a page. if you go look at the stuff on patreon youll see that in the beginning i pretty much just drew everything after the first batch straight through.

this comic is a lot of work so the most important thing is that hte process is fun for me. i really hate granular planning and itd just slow me down a ton so the process is really just vibes from point a to point b. hope this somewhat answers your question

Days N Daze / Post Party Depression

This song can fit in multiple places in Jackal’s timeline but i fit it mostly in the very beginning.

When Lyrebird is in her teens she spends a lot of time being stupid. She and her friends have fun breaking into abandoned buildings and harmless things that slowly escalate until theyre pulling street scams on unsuspecting passerby. When they pull a con unknowingly on a Mafia Bouncer. Everyone runs leaving her the sole perpetrator left to face the mafia.

After she ends up in the mafia, Lyre’s whole life is turned upside down. Suddenly her stupid cons have forced her into a real life of crime- a runner and helper for the mafia. She never wanted to be a criminal but she doesnt see a way out.

This part fits into just about every part of Jackal’s story. Man of a thousand masks. In this section it serves as the first instance that Lyrebird has to become her masks. Before they were just for pulling scams but now she wears them every waking moment- anything to hide her fear and uncertainty.

Shakira / She wolf

THIS SONG!!!! Is jackals main anthem i think, it makes me think abt him SO MUCH. Mainly I see it as Lyrebird coming to terms with who she is becoming. She learns to lie better, wear her masks like a second skin, shes not stealing chump change anymore- but something much more valuable. Information.

Mike Hough / Gambling man

Gambling Man represents the majority of Lyrebird’s late story with Nathan. As time goes on Lyre grows closer to him, falls deeper in love. I like to use gambling as a motif for Jackal and Dallas.

Lyre knows things are impossible but shes willing to place her bets on him, stay by his side even if the odds aren’t in her favor. A million to one odds and she still wouldnt leave. Unknown to both of them is how Nathan is her devil in disguise

Lyrebird saw the signs- saw a hit on her head- Nathan warned her- but she chose to stay. Now she’s paying for her sins, a bullet just inches away from ending her life- shes dead in everyway but physical. But she’s still lingering on her feelings- reality yet to truly sink in.

Joey Batey / Her sweet kiss

As Lyrebird leaves Chicago, shes forced to realize and truly come to terms with the fact the person she’d devoted the past five years of her life to has gutted her irreparably. Theres still that yearning- but he wasn’t worthy of it. He didn’t deserve her love.

Fin / Ship In a Bottle

Lyrebird is well and truly dead now. Her corpse washed away in the Chigaco waterfront only to reach the shore and be devoured by scavengers and vultures. She's truly alone now, but she's in control of her narrative now. This is her battle. Her ship. And she didn't need crew who would betray her- this is all her own battle to win.

im having many thoughts... el and am sitting down, el SO uncomfortable. theyre sure that if am learns everything hes gonna wanna leave. but its only fair to tell him, right? so they start out. they try to be chronological and make some sense, but it gets very frantic very quickly. am has to tell them to slow down and breathe sometimes. often.

el tells am that it was all their fault they got there. that they were messaging seth a lot on anon, signing off w a pumpkin, and then when seth leaked his address they got up and went there. they had nowhere else to go rly, it wasnt a particularly hard choice. seth took them in, didnt care for what they wanted from the first moment. told them either that or the police. didnt even care for their name. they were just pumpkin anon to him.

they tell am abt that first lonely year and how rly, seth fed them, there was a roof over their head, they had their little cage, it wasnt all that bad at all. they asked for it, right? right. seth cut off their fingies but they agreed, seth asked them whether that was okay and they agreed for him. they wanted so desperately to get his approval. they tell am how... its hard to remember. its painful and also, painfully blurry. seth did and said stuff... they just cant remember. whenever seth touched them theyd just dissociate. the pain was much easier to deal w, the whippings and such.

then seth brought kane home. oh, they wish kane never had to experience that, but they were so glad to have him there. a friend. their first ever friend rly, aside from jello, since theyd left the cult. they tell am that kane had it horrible, much much worse, they wish they couldve done smth to prevent it.

they feel like its all their fault. maybe if they never went there, seth wouldve never realised he could just keep ppl captive and torture them without ever getting caught. they refuse to go into detail abt the torture kane went thru, they just keep repeating how absolutely inhumane and terrible it was. they emphasise it was their fault for not being entertaining enough on their own for seth.

they get to the part w bellamy and it gets so hard. they dont even say it, they rly just ... shrug and gesture w their hands and cry and just try to convey that bellamy killed seth. they dont admit they miss him. just choke out "and ... and now we're here, ig"

I was thinking to hard about this, so I going to post this.

dolorem theory ahead! i have no reason to cut the post but just in case imma do it anyway.

Ehhh I was rewatching the first dolorem animatic (Daniel in the Den fuckin VIBESS!!!) by @/vibesoda and i paused on this frame:

Now this frame is k4 looking at the portraits of the past rulers of HBG.

The one on the end is obviously Couri (his little frown :,)) which would suggest that the portraits are in chronological order, which makes sense of course.

However, in the book when the old king is mentioned, the book gives a more elderly description of the king, so i’d imagine the old king looks more like:

This guy over here

So that leaves the question:

Who the hell is this guy?

We should also note that this portrait was drawn with out eyes (unlike the previous one) despite not having anything covering theyre eyes (like Couri’s).

So who do I think it is? Well…..

....…you can kinda see it…...

well at least i do, and yes I know this is the biggest stretch i could ever pull but it’s just a theory :D

And just to finish said theory off, the reason why Couri and the others may not have known abt Marcus (in addition to Nerdi and Geo who were probably his prince and guard/advisor(?) respectively), is because the old king probably crowned him before they came along and then he abdicated and went off the grid because something happened and the old king who was still alive and well just retook his place in the throne until he could find someone else to take his place.

And even if it isn't Marcus, i'll bet that its someone in HBG >:3.............................maybe..

Now, there are A LOT of holea in this theory that I just can’t fill. For one the picture in the middle could’ve just been a picture of the old king when he was younger, and if there really was a picture of an old king in the hallway of the castle, wouldn’t Couri and K4 have searched it up by now?

I’m sure there more questions but that’s it for now.

And of course there’s the very real and extremely probable possibility that I got the whole thing wrong, but oh well I had a eureka moment so I had to write about it. K bye
