When I was in ninth grade I wanted to challenge what I saw as a very stupid dress code policy (not being allowed to wear spikes regardless of the size or sharpness of the spikes). My dad said to me, “What is your objective?”
He said it over and over. I contemplated that. I wanted to change an unfair dress code. What did I stand to gain? What did I stand to lose? If what I really wanted was to change the dress code, what would be my most effective potential approach? (He also gave me Discourses on the Fall of Rome by Titus Livius, Machiavelli’s magnum opus. Of course he’d already given me The Prince, Five Rings, and The Art of War.)
I ultimately printed out that phrase, coated it in Mod Podge, and clipped it to my bathroom mirror so I would look at it and think about it every day.
What is your objective?
Forget about how you feel. Ask yourself, what do you want to see happen? And then ask, how can you make it happen? Who needs to agree with you? Who has the power to implement this change? What are the points where you have leverage over them? If you use that leverage now, will you impair your ability to use it in the future? Getting what you want is about effectiveness. It is not about being an alpha or a sigma or whatever other bullshit the men’s right whiners are on about now. You won’t find any MRA talking points in Musashi, because they are not relevant.
I had no clear leverage on the dress code issue. My parents were not on the PTA; neither were any of my friend’s parents who liked me. The teachers did not care about this. Ultimately I just wore what I wanted, my patent leather collar from Hot Topic with large but flattened spikes, and I had guessed correctly—the teachers also did not care enough to discipline me.
I often see people on tumblr, mostly the very young, flail around in discourse. They don’t have an objective. They don’t know what they want to achieve, and they have never thought about strategizing and interpersonal effectiveness. No one can get everything they want by being an asshole. You must be able to work with other people, and that includes smiling when you hate them.
Read Machiavelli. Start with The Prince, but then move on to Discourses. Read Musashi’s Five Rings. Read The Art of War. They’re classics for a reason. They can’t cover all situations, but they can do more for how you think about strategizing than anything you’re getting in middle school and high school curricula.
Don’t vote third party unless you can tell me not only what your objective is but also why this action stands a meaningful chance of accomplishing it. Otherwise, back up and approach your strategy from a new angle. I don’t care how angry you are with Biden right now. He knows about it, and he is both trying to do something and not doing enough. I care about what will happen to millions of people if we have another Trump presidency. Look up Ross Perot, and learn from our past. Find your objective. If it is to stop the genocide in Palestine now, call your elected representatives now. They don’t care about emails; they care about phone calls, because they live in the past. I know this because I shadowed a lobbyist, because knowing how power works is critical to using it.
How do you think I have gotten two clinics to start including gender care in their planning?
Start small. Chip away. Keep working. Find your leverage; figure out how and when to effectively use it. Choose your battles, so that you can concentrate on the battle at hand instead of wasting your resources in many directions. Learn from the accumulated wisdom of people who spent their lives learning by doing, by making mistakes, by watching the mistakes of their enemies.
Don’t be a dickhead. Be smarter than I was at 14. Ask yourself: what is your objective?

WRITERS AND FUTURE WRITERS, PLEASE LISTEN UP
i saw a few tiktok videos that was very concerning to me and i decided to share some of the knowledge i got because as a community of people who freely write things about characters, we need to protect our work. i have just decided to edit this post and to put the whole videos here since a some reblogs were of how i was spreading misinformation.
GOOGLE DOCS IS NOT SAFE (full credit to woppydoesthings on tiktok for information)
thank you to @lighteez for suggesting “reedsy” as an alternative option
thank you to @braingoaaaaaah for suggesting “click up” as an alternative option
thank you to @koungacris for suggesting “LibreOffice” as an alternative option
thank you to @stellarnathy for suggesting “notion” as an alternative option
THEY GOT THE AO3 WRITERS AS WELL (full credit to tiktok user sakuradarling) (sadly i can only add one video in per post and the tiktok user had turned off saving videos but i have decided to link the original video https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSFbq1PRA/)
apparently some thieves i am NOT calling them people because who with moral compass would do this shit? are copying, pasting and printing out popular fanfictions on AO3, binding them, turning them into actual books and selling them on places like Etsy WITHOUT crediting the original authors. which is why we can’t find some certain popular fics or authors on AO3
TUMBLR IS SELLING OUR WORK/PROMPTS TO THIRD PARTY WITHOUT CONSENT
i think i came across a post or two about it. i think my mutual @livelaughlovesubs has reblogged a post about it. check it out and turn on a switch on your blog settings that prevent this. stay safe and protect your works writers
spread the word everyone, because… genuinely what the fuck?

RE: Tumblr selling data to GenAI companies. (prev reblog.)
At this point I'm truly wondering what to do, really. (Glaze your art and so on, sure) But even the words we write, our personal thoughts, asks, everything is getting fed into these fucking machines from any site available. "Make your own page!" - Services like Squarespace, which are what I and most of my peers use, have sneakily added the option to allow third-party crawlers to harvest data. And portfolio websites are not social media. I want to interact and I have to reach clients.
Are we reaching the point where we have to post only previews and send finished art via Newsletters or post behind paywalls? Print it out and send a pigeon to our followers' homes?
I'm so fucking tired. So angry.
I've been an artist through life-threatening depression, through working and studying full time, through moving house and country, through the pandemic.
And this? This might just be what breaks me.

Review: Blast Effects by 3D Damsel
Blast Effects are becoming more and more popular in the Transformers toylines.  What can make a giant alien gun look even cooler?  How about a huge coloured laser coming out of the end!  Lots of the larger figures in the mainline Transformers toyline are coming with blast effects now, though sadly not many for the smaller bots. With this new trend, it was only a matter of time until some Third…

Hello friends!
I know it's only August, but I thought I'd start early:
If you have the legal right to vote in the United States, there is no benefit to you in not voting. All that not voting does to you is remove your most powerful legal ability to impact the identity of those who represent you in the government.
By the time you reach the election, by the time ballots are printed and you are filling in a bubble or pressing a button or flipping a lever, your only meaningful choice for who to vote for are the people who are listed on the ballot.
Because we live in a two-party system, in the vast majority of jurisdictions*, you are choosing between members of two parties. If you vote for someone who is not a member of one of those parties, you are throwing away your ability to meaningfully impact who wins that election. It sucks. it's shitty. It's unfortunate. But if you want a third party candidate to have a chance in a major race, it starts years before the election, not when you are standing in front of your ballot in November.
And if you think, they're both the same as each other--they're not. For literally any policy that you care about, there will be differences. Pick the policies you care most about, find the one who sits closer to you and vote for them. That is the only way that laws will move in the direction you want, by electing people who vote for policies that are closer to what you want.
I studied game theory in college, and from my standpoint it was one of the most useful and educational classes I took during my entire academic career, because of this key idea: If you want 10, and your options are 0 or 5, 5 is a better option for you. Something gives you more than nothing, even if you want a lot.
You will not get a politician who agrees with everything you want, unless you run for office yourself. Pick what you care the most about, and vote based on that. See voting as harm reduction. See voting as public transportation. See voting as whatever gets you out to vote.
But vote.
*There are a few independents in office. An independent or third party candidate will not win the Presidency in 2024.

Attending an after party | New York City, NY | September 11, 2024
Monse 'UFO Tapestry Jacket’ - $1,490.00 Monse 'Harness Tapestry Bustier Top’ - $740.00 Monse 'Tapestry Pleated Combo Mini Skirt’ - $890.00 Vivienne Westwood 'Grace Boots' - $1,270.00
It isn’t all that surprising that Taylor would tap Monse for some of her looks. The two designers at the helm, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, first met when they were working together at Oscar de la Renta - one of Taylor’s longstanding favourite brands. The pair still serve as Odlr’s creative directors. As a result, Monse’s clothes retain some of the femininity and classic looks of OdlR, but honed with a sharper edge.
Kim and Garcia’s Fall 2024 collection for Monse was inspired by UFOs and AI technology, taking futuristic scenes of alien invasions and rendering them in a more classical, historical artform: the tapestry. To me, I read this as a beautiful merge point of the imagery on Tortured Poets. Specifically of course the imagery from “Down Bad” (which, based on streams, seems like a healthy choice for a third single).
The bustier silhouette, the short pleated hemline of the skirt, and the buckle details which both I and Vogue reviewer Laia Garcia-Furtado tapped as “straitjacket-inspired” feel very pulled from the aesthetic world of Tortured Poets.
I don’t mind the print overload between the bomber, bustier, and skirt. In fact it sort of feels like a symbolic reference to how fully immersed and, well, down bad she was in that situation. Overwhelmed and fully engulfed by the feelings of a love bombing artfully translated as an alien abduction. The tall boots also tie in to her current style preferences but, as you know, I’m more of a minimalist heel gal myself. If it were me I would have been tempted to do a long trench (perhaps even leather, to tie into the buckle details and to go Matrix-y with it) and glittering sock booties for a cleaner and sparklier party-worthy finish. A Vivienne Westwood orb bag or even a necklace would also have been great here.

Good Omens graphic novel update: April 2024
Admin & updates
PledgeManager
Earlier this month, we launched the PledgeManager, where shipping is being facilitated. If you missed it, you can read the initial announcement here. We have been adapting the FAQ page to add further recurring asks, so please do visit there if you have a particular query as a starting point. You can view this here. We are working through all queries received - some are taking a bit longer than others, as they need to be raised with PledgeManager, or others involved, so we appreciate your patience in these instances where we are yet to get back. The most common question, which we include here, is the sock sizes:
Tumblr media
If you need to change your size, you have the ability to self-unlock your order and make any adjustments you need to. For socks that are part of a tier, there is a button to unlock and modify on the bottom of your receipt where you can alter your choice. If they were an add on, PledgeManager recommends that you remove the item from your cart and add it again with the correct size selected and complete their order to finalize the change.
Shipping
We are also aware of queries arising about the shipping rates themselves. While we have been open from the start of the project that shipping will be charged at a later date, we understand that the resultant cost has come as a surprise to some and that some prices are higher than expected. We want to be transparent on this: we have been working with our fulfillment partners on confirming product weights and the rates for shipping globally during the months since the project’s completion. The cost of doing this ethically - ensuring that everyone involved in the process from creators to those packing boxes is paid fairly, as well as ensuring the packaging is robust at this scale - is substantial.
We’ve done our best to minimise extra costs around shipping, while also not cutting any corners – we want your pledge rewards to reach you safe and sound. We have also subsidised costs across a number of territories, but costs for shipping to many locations remain high. The final thing we’ve done is lock in shipping costs now, a year out from fulfillment. We expect third party shipping costs to increase over the coming year, following the upwards trends across the board so far, but we will continue to absorb any subsequent rises.
We want to assure backers that the shipping does not include a profit margin for us, and every charge to our backers is something we’ve tried to minimise.
We absolutely understand that this is disappointing to many, and we endeavour to keep making the surrounding campaign the best it can be.
The timeline
The PledgeManager will run across 2024, and close at some point ahead of publication date (Spring 2025). When that date has been decided, we will give everyone as much notice as possible.
FAQ
As above, here is the centralised FAQ page. This will be updated over the coming year.
Cameos
Prior updates had noted the deadline for this has passed, however given the new publication date of the graphic novel, this has been extended slightly for God Tier and Archangel Tier backers. Please check your messages and emails if you backed either of these tiers and have not submitted your likeness.
Merch and more
Things are ramping up at Good Omens HQ, first of all with this delivery of one or two mugs at the warehouse:
Tumblr media
We’ve also got David Aja’s print featuring Aziraphale, Crowley and Dog, in their glorious orangey hues which will appear in Serpent Tier+:
Tumblr media
The trading cards are at the testing stage for game mechanics, while some of the early design prototypes are in for artist variants and we really can’t wait to start sharing these with you when they’re a bit further down the road. Almost there.
For those ready to capture your inner Pratchett and Gaiman on the page (Demon+), we have your notebooks:
Tumblr media
More from Colleen…
We’ve continued to see gorgeous artwork arrive from Colleen and here’s one that slipped into our inbox this week:
Tumblr media
And we thought we’d sign off this month with a glimpse at our favourite antiquarian bookshop:

I don’t know anything about books and stuff, but when ordering the lackadasiy print, I noticed that the hardcover version is waaay less expensive than paperback
isn’t it usually the other way around?
That's a third party merchant with one of the ages old original paperbacks, I imagine. I don't have any control over how they price it. I'll just say, uh, you definitely don't have to pay that much for the book if you want one.

Could you write a continuation of 'A Private Meeting" where it's revealed Rook was messing with them in some shape or form?
I've been thinking about this prompt and this is my ideal outcome. double post for today!!
part one
Tumblr media
*ੈ✩‧₊˚ a private meeting (rook ending)
summary: yuu makes a list of the top five cutest third years. the following-following conversation type of post: short fic characters: technically rook, vil is there, so is epel additional info: romantic I think, idk, reader is gender neutral, reader is yuu
Tumblr media
"Well, that was a complete waste of an evening,"
Vil takes long, graceful strides into the dark Pomefiore lounge. It's already past ten, and most of the dorm is asleep.
Not him, though.
An inexplicable sense of disappointment is heavy on his perfectly postured shoulders tonight. He would never admit it aloud, perhaps not even to himself, but he was greatly looking forward to unfurling that piece of paper and reading his name.
He stops.
"I don't know why I even bother," he mutters to himself, just loud enough for his vice housewarden to hear.
"Ah, do not be so forlorn, my Roi du Poison! You already know the prefect holds you dear. There is not a doubt in my mind that your beautiful name was the first on that list!"
"...And frowning like that will give you wrinkles."
Vil turns over his shoulder to glare at Rook.
"Not that. This,"
There are a pair of muddy boot prints sprawling all across the pristine lounge, already dry and caked over the perfect carpet.
Vil doesn't need to be a hunter like Rook to know what creature they came from.
"Epel,"
Rook peers over the housewarden's shoulder, and tsks. "Shall I have a word with him? He's likely still awake,"
"No, no. You've done enough tonight," Vil says. "I'll handle this."
He leaves the lounge, and his vice housewarden, behind. This evening had already been more than frustrating, and he was not going to spiral over a little mud.
"Felmier," he opens the door without knocking. "Here. Now."
Even if he were not intimately familiar with the room and bed assignments for each dorm, he would know which blanketed lump was Epel.
Only one of them jumped, anyway.
Epel peers out from under his covers like a small child.
"...Now?"
"Do not make me repeat myself,"
He hesitates, and slowly slips out of bed, and comes to the door. Vil pulls him into the hallway as to not disturb the well-behaved students.
"I have already had an impossibly tedious day, and what do I come back to find? You, all over the carpet in the lounge. How many times do I have to tell you to wipe your feet before coming inside? Are you a toddler?"
Epel winces. "...Slipped my mind,"
"Of course. Of course," he mutters. "You will be responsible for your mess. Dawn. I want all of it gone before breakfast."
Vil was expecting him to argue, or, Sevens forbid, negotiate, but Epel says nothing.
And then: "Where were you, anyway?"
His eyes narrow. "I don't see how that's any of your concern,"
"Meeting?"
"Do not change the subject,"
"...Cause I saw Ortho about two hours ago, and he said-"
Vil takes a deep, calming breath. Now is not the time to spiral. He needs sleep. He needs quiet.
Epel blinks. "...I'm not trying to antagonize you or nothing. I just thought you should know,"
He pinches the bridge of his nose between his fingers.
"Know what, Epel?"
"...That I have the list,"
Pause.
Vil looks down at the boy. Had he heard that right? No, he couldn't possibly-
"The prefect let me keep it after the party. I thought it was funny, so..." Epel looks away, almost sheepishly. "I have it in my desk right now."
Many, many new possibilities come from this. Epel is lying. He's distracting him. There's no way...
Vil is quiet. He should scold Epel for fibbing, but the slight possibility that he's telling the truth...
...that the real list is in that room, right now, with Vil's name on it...
"Show me,"
Epel disappears into the quiet room, and comes back with a folded piece of lined paper, almost exactly identical to the one Grim had eaten.
On the back is a game of hangman, and, unmistakably, the prefect's handwriting.
"I don't understand," Vil murmurs. "If this is it, what did we have?"
Epel shrugs. "Mix up?"
"No," he says, turning over the paper in his hands. "Rook would have checked. Thoroughly. He would have known..."
He stops. The thought hits him before he can even finish his sentence.
"...Unless..."
Vil's perfectly manicured fingers slide under the fold of the paper and open it.
There, in the prefect's familiar handwriting, is a list.
At number one: Rook Hunt.
Not a doubt in his mind, huh?
Vil re-folds the paper, confiscates it in his pocket, and looks down at Epel.
"Go to bed. You'll start looking undead if you keep staying up this late,"
"But-"
"No buts," he says firmly, turning to walk back in the direction he'd come from. "And... You may sleep in. Forget about cleaning the lounge tomorrow."
"-I have someone else who needs to be reminded of his place."

Good Saturday, y’all.
Topic of today’s rant: PEOPLE PRINTING AND SELLING FANFIC & GENERAL FANDOM ETIQUETTE
Profiting from fanfic will ruin it for everyone.
I want all of you who gift us your stories to be safe from lawsuits and beware that your content might be stolen.
Not to be on a soapbox and preaching to the choir but here are.
There are many authors pulling their work off AO3 because people acting on bad faith are printing and binding fics to sell on etsy thus infringing copyright laws. Fanfic has always been a grey area and we are allowed to exist in this grey area because we are not profiting from it. The minute money is exchanged, every party involved is breaking the law.
Why am I complaining about this yet again? Because we might be deprived from enjoying fanfic with the freedom we currently have because the fanfic authors will fear getting sued. If third parties are stealing our work and selling it, publishers and studios won’t care to know who sold it. It is your handle (thus IP address) on the sold fanfic. Because, get this, they are doing downloads straight from ao3 with your usernames.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Manacled is being pulled from ao3 because the author will publish it as a book. People are putting the book at risk by selling printed versions of it on Etsy.
Tumblr media
I believe many of us who fall on the 20 years of reading fanfic side rather than on the 20 year olds reading fanfic will remember the Anne Rice days. These are not fully over because her son is carrying on the legacy of suing everyone who writes fanfic of her work. And if I may say, she didn’t invent vampires and should’ve taken many seats. I digress.
I am not sure of the levels of awareness within this community and to what extent it can affect all of us. TikTok is a massive contributor to this problem (as it is to many other problems. Again, I digress) since booktok and the binding folks discovered ao3.
You might think, I only post on tumblr so my content is safe. Well, they are finding their way here too. They cringe because tumblr is for old people but they still make their way here with their bad manners and pillaging behaviour.
I want all of you who gift your stories to be safe, lawsuit free, not lose your content and not be afraid of sharing.
I wish I had a definitive solution to this problem but I can only think of small actions:
report the etsy accounts selling fanfic/fanfic commissions,
report the TikTok accounts selling binding for fanfic work,
go back to the days of putting disclaimers on your notes that you don’t own the characters and you are not profiting from the story.
Tagging some authors* here for visibility so you can cascade to more people. Absolutely no pressure tag.
