homecoming part 2 - eddie diaz x reader
part 1 here!
Tumblr media
Then:
"I'm pregnant."
Eddie stares widely at Shannon, at the girl he had been friends with in seventh grade and reconnected with at the senior year bonfire several months ago. That bonfire had been Eddie's first time trying a beer, and it had also been the night where Shannon and Eddie had had sex for the first and only time with each other. They had amicably decided that they were better off as friends, and Eddie had thought that would be the end of things, since not even a week later, he had met you. The new girl at school. The girl that had flipped his entire world on its axis. A girl that he saw his entire future with.
Eddie couldn't help feel like those future plans were crumbling right before him. Eddie knew what Shannon being pregnant meant. He was eighteen, Catholic, and born in Texas. His parents would have his head if he didn't marry her. He just didn't know how he was supposed to live a happily married life when his heart will forever be with you.
Instead Eddie does what he's good at: he plans and compartmentalizes. He starts forming a mental checklist:
To-do: Tell her. Break her heart and yours simultaneously Tell Mom and Dad Marry Shannon Enlist in order to provide for your future child
Hours later, Eddie sets to work on the first task.
Meanwhile in a blissful ignorance, you rest your head against the passenger window of Eddie's Chevy Silverado, a content smile on your face. The two of you had gone to your favourite pizza place, and Eddie was currently driving you back home. He had been quiet and subdued tonight, but you had chalked it up to him being stressed about midterms. Besides, you know that he's comfortable opening up to you on his own terms; you never want to push him before he's ready.
Eddie rolls to a slow stop in front of your house. He kills the engine, and drops his hands from the wheel. He takes a deep breath, then:
"Shannon is pregnant."
Definitely not midterm stress.
You're silent as Eddie continues. "I have to marry her. It's the only way, and it's killing me, because you're the love of my life." Eddie turns his body fully in the driver's seat to face you. His eyes are shiny and wet, but the tears don't fall - almost as if his body had told him he wasn't allowed to.
While Eddie is talking though, a distant alarm sounds in the back of your own brain. Pregnant. Late periods. When was the last time you had your period?
You eventually speak, shaky and voice wobbly. "I understand. Maybe in another life, eh?" With that, you press a chaste kiss on Eddie's cheek, and scramble out of the car, wet hot tears streaming down your face.
The next morning, you stare at the positive pregnancy test in your hands, and tickets to L.A. get booked.
Now:
Chris and Bee are two peas in a pod. The two of them walked ahead of you and Eddie at the aquarium, excitedly sharing facts that they knew about sharks. Eddie and you, though? The tension between the two of you was thick. Neither one of you knew how to start a conversation with the other, but that doesn't stop Eddie from giving you long glances out of the corner of his eye.
Could anyone blame him? You were stunning, and the fact that the two of you shared an adorable girl lit a territorial fire in Eddie. At the same time, there was also a big part of Eddie that was hurt and angry that you didn't tell him about Bee's existence.
Suffice it to say, Eddie Diaz was having a very complicated Sunday morning.
"So, you have a coffee shop?" Eddie tries, going for a safe topic.
You smile tentatively. "Yeah. It's also a bookstore."
Eddie's smile back is genuine. "You always did want to open one. Congratulations."
"Mommy!"
Both of your heads whip towards the kids. Except, it hadn't been Bee calling out for you. It had been Chris, referring to his own mom.
Shannon stands there before you. She looks at the two of you, then back at the kids, face stricken as if she had seen a ghost.

Plant Profile: American Witch Hazel - Hamamelis virginiana
Today's plant is better known for its use as a facial toner but this year I've witnessed a mass-bloom (the yellow dots in the image above) so I want to re-introduce you my ultimate late fall favorite!
Tumblr media
Witch-Hazel refers to members of the Hamamelis family, containing about five species, 3 of which are found in the eastern US and the other two in Asia. Our species of focus is the American Witch Hazel, a wide growing, often dominate understory shrub/tree common throughout forests of the American East. The plant has a lovely arching growth habit (Image 2 above), alongside trails in older-growth tall mountain forests, one always can spot witch hazel by a tunnel effect along the trails framed by its branches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For a quick technical analysis, Witch Hazel has oval alternate leaves that are asymmetrical and have rounded lobes along the sides (image 3 of pressed leaf). The bark is a grey or reddish brown with small lenticels (image 4 of 'trunk') and typically grows in clusters sprouting from deep roots. Typically the plant reaches about 20' in height and 20' in width, as I usually only see specimens this large in very old portions of woodland my assumption is that it takes many decades to achieve this stature.
The flowers themselves are divided into 4 portions with yellow ribbon-like petals present from October-December (image 5, 6, 9). The flowers are extremely fragrant in wet weather and mornings, the scent usually fades in drier conditions. Flowers lose their ribbons and recede into this hardened portion connected to the stem called a calyx (it looks like a rounded pod which can have about 4 seeds in it). The seeds actually shoot out of this pod as a dispersal method around the next fall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I brought up flowering because like many species in the northeast, there is never a consistent year for these things, while I see witch-hazel flowers every year I don't encounter blooms prolifically unless it's exposed to a lot of sun light. From my experience, a mass-bloom (in which every tree has noticeable blooms like image 1) occurs every 5 years about, I've noticed this in my forest since childhood but others may have more frequent encounters than me.
American Witch Hazel has a large range and is found throughout the Eastern US. The Northern limit of its range is Nova Scotia to Wisconsin staying mostly east of the Mississippi River south until its South Western Limit in East Texas and Northern Florida to the East. Allegedly disjunct populations also exist in Lost Maples Texas and the Eastern Sierra Madres of Mexico but those are fairly isolated from the main range.
There are two other Hamamelis species located within the same range. H. vernalis: Ozark Witch-hazel, which is a common horticultural specimen due to its reddish yellow blooms coming out just before spring and is naturally restricted to the Ozarks. H. ovalis: big leaf witch-hazel is a new species discovered in 2004, found only in one watershed in Mississippi and Alabama; this species has much larger leaves and red mid-winter blooms. Most people are unlikely to encounter these in the wild at all.
Tumblr media
Hamamelis virginiana can grow in both acidic and alkaline conditions, though I tend to find the densest populations on protected north facing slopes in mature forests near where water travels. I've also found it on pure rock on mountain top balds in New York before (image 7 above). This is because in the North, American Witch Hazel isn't as limited in habitat as in the Southern portion of it's range where it's generally restricted to only cove forests and bottom lands. generally there is an association with the Witch Hazel and decent moisture.
Speaking of moisture, Early English settlers (shown by Native Americans) used witch hazel branches as dowsing rod to find underground water sources. Sticking branches in the ground, and watching which portion bent upon encountering streams. It's likely the name 'Witch' in Witch Hazel derives either from Middle English 'Wiche' for 'lively' or Anglo-Saxon 'Wych' for 'bend' describing this use. [Info from US Forest Service].
Tumblr media
Witch Hazel is also a protector of the forest following disturbance. In a Canadian Journal of Forest Research Study by Taylor Benton, analysis found that where large scale canopy loss was present H. virginiana was found to increase it's basal area growth (think spread) by over 300%. This indicates that in the presence increased light and nitrogen, the dominate understory species are able to protect seedlings by increasing canopy shade!
In my own forest I've noticed this where Ash has died back, the Witch Hazel flowers more prolifically and frequently as well as becoming denser (Image 8 Witch-hazel in flower above a stream)
Tumblr media
Now what are the ecological relationships associated with American Witch Hazel? This species specifically provides one of the last insect oriented pollen sources prior to winter (other witch-hazel species often bloom in early spring), so species like the owlet moth which are active in winter, and late season bees get a food source from it. The leaves are occasionally predated by a gall wasp which forms many odd tents on the leaf in favorable conditions.
Propagating Witch-hazel for those crazy like me should be aware it is not an easy plant to start. The seeds require a period of moist cold stratification, then warm, then another cold (think 90 days of fridge, 90 days in warmth, 90 days in fridge) then it'll begin to germinate. If you have a full specimen you can attempt layering (which is covering a low branch in soil allowing it to root). You can take softwood cuttings in spring but they have to be kept frost free the next winter.
Tumblr media
Finally Landscaping advice! Witch-Hazel is best utilized in partially shaded non-south facing or moist areas in partial sun. While it loves total shade in its natural environment it really preforms much better in a garden with some sunlight. American Witch-Hazel also is a better performer in the scent category rather than a showy floral display, most horticultural specimens are derived from hybrids between Chinese, Japanese, or Ozark Witch-hazel (image 10 of possible H. vernalis cultivar above) as their coloring is much more interesting compared to our local powerhouse. However it must be said that American Witch-hazel is resilient and has some flower color variation (oranges and pinks) which are absent in other species.
So this has been my plant profile on American Witch-Hazel, please go into the woods and smell the haunting yellow blooms while the mass-bloom is still occurring. Happy Hunting to my Eastern American followers :)!

[Audio Length: 47:48]
"This is not the same coffee you've been bringing me," says Clint. "This coffee..." He gulps down the last mouthful and pours himself another cup. "This is the best coffee I've ever had. What is this? Where did you get this?"
"Four days," Bucky says thoughtfully. "I figured it would take you at least a week. I guess your taste is more discerning than either of us thought."
"None of the coffee has been the same," Clint realizes. He points at Bucky with the hand not cradling his perfect coffee to his chest. "You're doing a thing."
Bucky grins. "I," he confirms, "am doing a thing."

Sons of Mars refs and nods pt3
Final bits and bops and nods Sons of Mars made to the comics (and various other media)!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Great Mind "statue" is inspired off of DCAU J'onn's true form.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The exclamation "Moons of Mars!" comes from Identity. Cay'an comes from Martian Manhunter: The Others Among Us (written by AJ Lieberman, drawn by Al Barrionuevo) and she has a cameo in the background :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The red martians are visually inspired by the Draags from Fantastic Planet, mainly when they morph into strange shapes. Lore-wise, they're inspired by Young Justice's take on the Yellow Martians as priests and sorcerers.
Tumblr media
The Saturnian pod is named after the Saturnians from the comics (red martian clones made from the green martians, like Jemm). Visually the pod is based off of the ships from Disney's Treasure Planet asdfaf
Tumblr media Tumblr media
J'onn's melty face is from In my Life! (where J'onn has a climactic fight with Ma'al).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The shot of J'onn and Ma'al floating at a distance from a planet is a nod to a panel in Lazarus Planet, Martian Manhunter in: Songs of Pain (written by Dan Watters, art by Max Dunbaa).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This hypothetical panel of Ma'al attacking J'onn is a direct homage to Abandon All Hope from the Ostrander and Mandrake run. Knife arm and Pointy Stabby arm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
J'onn's inner thoughts about floating in the thought streams as a reminder that he's never alone and a part of something greater is pulled from Pilgrimage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the pose of J'onn and Ma'al holding hands is an intentional reference to a scene in Brightest Day where J'onn and M'gann combine their telepathy for a moment, I was surprised to find an eerily similar scene in Martian Manhunter (1988) (written by JM DeMatteis, art by Mark Badger) issue 3- where J'onn mourns the body of his deceased daughter over a grave. I had this final scene written and sketched out long before I read this comic, but I can acknowledge a parallel when I see it!
If you're reading this far, hi! I hope you enjoyed this deep dive into some of the references and writing decisions we picked up from the comics. Cataloguing thoughts like this as something to look back on is fun! I like it when references and homages aren't intrusive or disrupt the story, so I'm glad to hear a lot of people enjoyed Sons of Mars even without context to martian lore. And if you know the comics, I hope this was extra fun for you!

Finally watching my Blu-Ray for Underwater (2020) and...
Tumblr media
(1) A while back I came across multiple Reddit threads trying to figure out where Gunner Wright (Isaac Clarke, Dead Space), Will Eubank's friend, made an appearance in the film as a character he played in Eubank's 2011 film, Love. Folk made it seem like this was the hardest Easter egg to find in the film because no one could spot him.
Listening to the Audio Commentary, however, Eubank mentions that Wright is one of the two drill workers who don't reach the bulkhead before Norah (KStew) closes it. Wright is also the commercial voice at the end of the film greeting Norah, Emily, and Smith when they enter the main hall of the Roebuck ("Welcome to the Roebuck!"). IDK, it helps to buy movies instead of just streaming them if you want more information.
(2) One of the deleted scenes reveals that the helmet that Rodrigo (the token Black guy) had a huge hole in the corner of the protective glass. The final scene just shows him staring at the helmet forlornly then giving Norah one of the undamaged helmets. I feel like they removed that scene purely because the hole creates more questions than answers (specifically, how did Rodrigo's suit not get flooded). But, they also could've just rewritten his death if they really wanted him to be the first to die. Like, dude could've just stayed behind, but, eh. Shock and awe.
(3) In at least one version of Rodrigo's death, he says a "hail Mary, full of grace" prayer before his suit implodes and he dies.
Tumblr media
(4) In the same scene Capt. Lucien reveals he thinks all of his crew is pretty much fucked. Smith asks him, "What are we looking at captain?" When he sees Lucien studying a map. Lucien says, "We're dead" and pats him on the back. Smith and Co. don't know French, which is why he says it that way.
(5) Eubank suggests, that if people wanted to, they could read into the idea that Capt. Lucien kind've went mad when he (and his old crew) was working on Shepherd Station after his daughter died. Just based on the Cthulhu references on the map in his old locker.
(6) For whatever reason, they did a lot of shooting with a real rabbit (they named "Little Paul"), then replaced it with a stuffed rabbit just to change how the actors would interact with it.
(7) The scene immediately after Rodrigo's death apparently contains a moment where Cthulhu (or "the behemoth") is nearby watching Norah right before she jumps onto the elevator. Effectively, this suggests the "deep ones" (or "the clingers") that constantly attack them are never far from where Cthulhu is and that it's stalking them throughout the film.
(8) Smith and Emily being the only reported survivors at the end of the film means none of the twenty or more evacuation pods that Capt. Lucien sent out at the start of the film made it to the surface.
(9) the majority of the film was filmed on practical sets (akin to Pacific Rim) and said sets were built on gimbals inside of an abandoned LOWES building in New Orleans.
(10) Love, The Signal, and Underwater might all take place in the same universe because of the appearance of Gunner Wright playing the same character (Capt. Lee Miller) from Love.

hey! i came across a list of lud's boundaries a few days ago, one of which was "don't write fanfic about him or his friends" which is valid, but i wonder whether the person who wrote that was simply assuming or actually knew something that i didn't?? i wouldn't be here if i hadn't indulged once or twice, so this isn't an attack on you (clearly), you're just one of the bigger authors who has like public social media and i got curious?? i guess? the only time i've ever heard ludwig reference fanfic was like once on the pod where he made a joke about it. obviously rpf is inherently weird and a touchy subject but he doesn't seem to give that big of a fuck idk guy i feel like i'm a detective going around and questioning suspects lol my bad still no clue as to why i'm in your askbox
i mean i dont really know it might be something that he said a long time ago or it might be something that someone just decided but honestly he has opened ao3 and read fanfic on stream (and was pretty chill about it in the clip) so i think it's fine LOL but i keep all my works archive locked for a reason and my public social media is intentionally on a website he doesn't use + i don't maintag my fics, or really any of my posts for the most part. i'm big proponent of separating rpf from the people it's about (it's what hockey fans have been doing for ages) and avoiding pushing it in their faces. fanfic and ship content should be for the fans and not cross that border (and for the record, i don't think any of it is "real". it's fiction based on their personas). i honestly think donating to creators directly to ask if they're cool with fic is super weirdChamp and i'm glad that's a mostly bygone era lmaooo. i doubt they seriously give a fuck as long as nobody is like sending that shit to them.

Ashes in Her Wake | C13
Tumblr media
The average distance a horse could travel was about 40 km to 64 km per day, with some stop time and foraging. A well-trained horse could reach about 160 km per day with frequent breaks to regain strength to carry on. A Direhorse had two extra sets of legs than a horse and could reach 95km per hour with all of their legs working together if they had to flee. So faster and durable than a horse and could go further.
Alma found it interesting to keep track but ultimately, she had little reference of the land to truly estimate her position from her last in her three days of travelling but she knew how to track her position of going North then east. But by assumption, based on speed
She was not near the heartlands, but she had progressed away from the Upper Plains for there to be a distinct shift in biome; the grass was more tinged with red tips, beautiful multi-coloured flora on winding bushes and huge areas of open fields which starched on for miles and miles, so it was a fairly easy route to see where she was going. Stopping a few times to rest before carrying on.
On the morning of day four, however, Leyapay refused to be saddled and trotted away grumpily every time Alma tried to approach her with the saddle.
“<Come on,>” She set the saddle down in a huff, following her mount to pull her back to camp rather than letting her wander off.
They had made camp in a fairly nice area near a distant river, taking refuge in a bush pod so they both had protection from the elements but the pod bushes were getting further and far between. So her refuge would be less safe once the bushes were gone.
The solution to that was a tent.
Alma didn’t have a tent.
She caught Leyapay and patted her back leg to pull her attention around before the Direhorse turned with a huff. Alma connected back to her before she felt the Direhorses tiredness. Not exhausted like the typical end-of-day stop but a consistent tiredness that came with overworking. She wasn’t used to this sort of travel. Before they left the upper plains and the Kinglor forest, they had long stops at the field labs so it didn’t matter but now they were here…
“<Okay, we can stay here a few days.>” Alma decided, “<But then we should get moving.>
Which did give her time to think about her camping situation. So it wasn’t all bad; she could still be productive.
Leyapay trotted back with her for a few meters then turned off to hunt for pitcher plants to feed from and disconnected from her as she did so. Alma sighed, wincing at the sharp disconnect but returned to her bush pod camp and set her basket back in with her saddlebag. Unpacking some of her tools again and refitted her hammock back to where she had put it for the night and ultimately emptied the basket out to use it.
Perhaps it was happenstance but Alma had spotted blooms close to the nearby stream on her way. Not Rain Thistles that the Upper Plain has but these ones she noted only opened in direct sunlight so she assumed it was related. So that would give her something to do as she pondered. Gathering supplies was oddly enjoyable after all.
She eyed her mount, balancing the basket as she went her way towards the river that was about twelve metres from her bush. Her spear, she kept looped at her back ready to use at a moment’s notice. Just in case because… this was still unknown territory.
Sure, gathering blooms would give her supplies to turn to thread to loom into material. Enough would see she could craft a small tent which would require means to not only create an actual structure but also structural support.
Leyapay only had a saddle and two means of storage. Both were filled with the need-to-survive items that had been gifted to her or the shit she had stolen from the field lab. She couldn’t carry a tent in a basket or a bag. A wheel-drawn wagon was out of the question in Na’vi cultures so some sort of sled to be dragged was the next best thing.
Another Direhorse might actually help. If she created a tent that folded or broke down and became compact, she had a means of having a tent. But she had only one kuru and no other company. So a sledge of sorts made more sense.
Alma knew the sledges were often made of wrapped-together reeds. The Zeswa tents were massive and took time to collapse as the Zakru walked. Their tents were designed in a manner to become sledges for the Direhorses to drag. Reed frames were stripped and the fabric was stored. The frames were then folded into natural segments and set into a sledge-like configuration with a cover to keep things contained. Anything within the tent often was set inside and attached to the saddle of the mount.
Alma set her basket down as she approached the first collection of blooms. A few blues and purple but her eyes were to the beautiful shade of forest green blooms. It was good quality, her fingers touching over it to get a feel for it before she pulled the bloom; she’d rather not collect anything unripened and useless. Content to feel this was workable, Alma gently pulled the bloom but she curled the bloom at a slight circular motion to fully release it without hampering its condition.
Personally, Alma didn’t need anything massive for a tent; it was just for her and perhaps Leyapay so the scale was just them. A small reed frame was workable but it would take a few days to gather and more to craft, excluding the fact Leyapay’s saddle needed adjustments… and if her Direhorse would be willing to accept the extra weight a tent frame would need.
Still, that was some time away, she had to make the fabric. She still had the spare hammock; she could use that to store any fabric sheets she’d make beside her saddlebag.
Alma took her time harvesting the blooms and filling the basket, noting how a little bigger they were as she did so, getting the other two colours and qualities as well; the colours these threads would spare her any dye for them; she had little patience for that. More work than she could give right now. Natural colours worked just as well.
There was little point in getting too much as well; she needed to process it all and spin it before it could be of any use which again was a time burner on top of keeping track of food supplies and making sure everything was in order with her camp.
She could spend all her time today working on getting what she had gathered spun into yarn or looming thread, it may not be enough. Still, there were still bushpods ahead to be her camp and staying here was counterproductive long-term; the plants needed to regrow their blooms in peace. She could follow the river to keep close to the blooms so she wouldn’t run out of raw materials on her trip through this region.
Better plan for now.
Inside, she settled down onto the grass, organised the blooms by colour and began to prep the blooms into useable fibres to spin with her tools. Her fingers worked, but her mind still wandered.
With a fair idea of her camp situation, the next concern was food. Her supplies were low now and while the bushpods had pod fruits, it was not enough for her to live on. Her dried meat was nearly gone now and there were only a few recognisable root-based plants she could dig up.
Her side now had healed, and her rib felt strong enough to actually handle a weapon in a useful way. Her burns were healed enough to not compromise her flexibility. So she had little reason to turn away from the notion of hunting for meat. Kìoetey had learned within days of using a bow. Natural instinct, even but she had no bow to consider a ranged weapon.
She could grit her teeth with the butchering process, even if it made her queasy but Okul hadn’t cared when they brought a dead Meer Deer to her; she needed to learn how to butcher respectfully. They had gone on about uses of things she hadn’t considered, telling her to bury and return to Eywa on what she couldn’t use and showed her how to dry or cure the meat for travel. To process an animal, its meat and by-products, it would cost her two days minimum to stay at a camp.
So getting a tent was probably a priority first. Bones would be useful for making more tools and in her case, she could do with more resources on hand. Hide would be good as well, come to think about it. Plenty of uses as well. Any tent she’d made would need to be made waterproof. Looming fabric was her current plan but hide would cut down a lot of work to create her tent. It could take her weeks, maybe a month to produce enough fabric to be used as a tent.
Alma sighed deeply, tossing her prepped ball of fibres into the pile and reaching for the next. Leyapay seemed to trot by into the bushpod then happily sat down and rolled onto her back to scratch an itch before she flopped back onto her side to rest.
“<You sleep like you’ve been shot.>” Alma remarked to her mount, “<I thought you were more graceful than that>”
The Direhorse didn’t move or get up.
-
By lunchtime, the blooms had been processed and Alma threw the seeds that she found inside out and let them scatter naturally downwind and took some water from the river to her fire to boil for lunch. She took the time to take a mental inventory of her food as she prepped a simple vegetable stew.
As anticipated, low meat and fruits. Seeds were more plentiful. There were a few cloud-spitters about so harvesting more wasn’t too bad but they required prep-time to go further. The handfuls of seeds were encased in a nodule shell so that had to be boiled or steamed to soften for her to get entry to the goods. Carrying them around in the shell was care easier to carry them so she could harvest as she went. Not a concern.
The seeds, if need be found be ground up to be made into flour, so it was a seed-grain staple that the Zeswa certainly made good use of. So it had plenty of uses so there was that for her. At least Okul showed her how to make their Grain soup, a Kame’tire speciality.
Alma checked her herbs and seasoning, glad to see the small canteens weren’t that low. She had written on the bottom what was in and what plants produced them. Salt, she was near out of. Once she hit an ocean or a salt-water body of water that was easy to get more of.
She took her time in prepping her meal, adding a little more to have an extra serving for the night before she repacked her supplies up once the stew was cooking. Leyapay still slept like a dead horse all the while.
Alma ate it quickly, setting a lid over the leftover stew and setting it to cool down before she returned to her pile of floof and spindle and carried on with her yarn.
Leyapay eventually woke after a few hours with a gruff, startling Alma enough to drop the spindle and glowered as her sleep-disorientated Direhorse pottered out to the afternoon sun.
“Aye, yai yai…” Alma picked up her spindle, picked up her fluff and put it into the basket before she trudged outside with it; probably wise to get some more sun today. Alma left her finished bobbins inside by her things and took a seat on the grass.
She still had a few hours of light left before bed as well so better make the most of it.
Leyapay totted about, wandering back and forth, to the river, in the river; slip once and tried to play it off by sticking her tongue straight into a pitcher plant. Alma rolled her eyes at her antics.
-
Alma was almost done with her blooms, three left of a fine quality then she noticed movement up north of her bushpod and kept an eye as it came closer to realise it wasn’t a creature but a group.
A group of six Na’vi on the back of Direhorse and clearly a wandering group. She watched, a little nervously as they seemed to change from one course directly towards her when they noticed her presence here. The closer they got, she noted they looked very Zeswa-like in attire and hairstyle but they were very far from the Zeswa’s home Camp.. Traders, maybe?
Four were male, one being a child, with two women. They had two sledges between them but it looked like they all shared the burden of supplies between the five Direhorses. She could feel their eyes on her and how they took note of her humble and clearly makeshift camp in their approach.
Alma rose to her feet, fiddling with her spindle but offered them a Na’vi gesture as a welcome to be polite. Na’vi didn’t see strangers as dangerous without provocation so it was counterproductive to be grumpy and wish them away. They wouldn’t harm her.
“<I see you, wanderer.>”
“<I see you, Traveller.>” Alma greeted back, eying the group but she felt a great sense of excitement to actually… talk to the people. Three days without interaction with a person who could talk back so this was a wonderful change. Maybe they could help her properly navigate.
“<My name is Vayhìp of the Zeswa. I travel with my son, Taru, my mate Kìpe and friends, Po'u, Wayhe and Vasat. The night is a few hours away, would you mind our presence for the night?>”
“<I am Alma.>” She greeted. “<I will need to relight the fire but you’re welcome to join me.>” She said, gesturing to her makeshift space. Why not?
Vayhìp nodded once before the group dismounted. Leyapay, interested appeared from the river and trotted very happily to the newcomers.
“<Leyapay.>” Alma tisked softly, coming to pull her away to get the group to unpack.
The boy gasped in delight. “<This one’s beautiful! She is not of the plains?>”
Alma smiled, running her hand down her sail. “<She is of the Clouded Forest. Her name is Leyapay.>” She introduced.
Taru laughed. “<That’s a funny name>”
It really was. Leyapay’s name in English is directly translated to Foggy. A pun, so to speak as she was from the clouded forest, renowned for fog and mist.
Alma helped a little with the group, restarted the fire and set down some of their baskets into a neat pile
“<Ul’ma, you’re a long away from the Hollows.>”
It took a second before she realised sharply she was being spoken to by the other woman, Vasat as she took the basket from her but she stalled a little on the fact the woman had… said the wrong name. Or perhaps had misheard her name, was the other conclusion.
Alma, as a name was not against any of the Na’vi gramma or language rules the Na’vi developed so it didn’t stick out as alien or even too foreign to the Na’vi. Names that had Bs or Ds were immediately known as alien since the Na’vi didn’t have those letters in the alphabet, G didn’t exist at the start of the name and typically only appeared in the latter half of a name, like Kitangi. J also didn’t exist which is why the Na’vi called Jake Tsyeyk in the Na’vi language. Alma, as a name could pass as a Na’vi name.
Decidedly, however, Alma decided not to correct the Na’vi woman. It was probably because her accent was not perfect yet as to why she misheard.
“<It is. The Clouded Forest is no longer my home.>” Alma sighed sadly, not lying since it really was a long way and not her home. From the Clouded Forest to the Kinglor forest, up and out of the Upper Plains to… where the hell she was now. Probably about 100 klicks now from the Upper Plains by her estimation of the last three and a half days. “<I take a wanderer’s path.>”
“<Are you heading up towards the Spires? The Ke'awa Kame'tire will surely offer a home for you.>” Vasat wondered.
“<Is that not west of the Clouded Forest?” Alma couldn’t help but ask. She was sure it was, right? Or were the Resistance’s data wrong?
Po’u snorted a little, passing by her with a basket of fruits that looked unfamiliar but smelt good and sweet. “<It is north of the Clouded forest, past the mountain range and easy to access through a series of cave systems that are easier to transverse than the world above. You can come through to access the spires from The Heart of the Plains by crossing its small ocean. I’m surprised you don’t know this>” gesturing to her attire to make a point.
Alma pursed her lips tightly. They thought she was Kame’tire… which was a fair assumption based on the presenting facts of her clothes and Direhorse. Should she correct them? Or let them live the assumption.
“<I’ve lived a very sheltered life with little venture.>” Alma reasoned, setting the last basket down. “<It’s pleasing to hear I am heading in the right direction then.>”
“<It is two days of travel north and you go north-east for half a day before you reach the Stone Herd of the Heart of the plains, We came from there >” Vayhìp spoke, guiding his son to help his mother as they freed the Pa’li from the sledge and detached saddles and set them down. “<Then simply north until you reach Rider’s Regret then northeast to Stone Landing where another Zeswa trading post resides. They can find means of getting you across or direct you to the Spires from there.>”
“<Are you traders?>” Alma asked, setting the stand over the fire before Vasat hung her cook pot over the top and Wayhe went to collect water.
“<Yes, but mostly from the Heartlands to The Circle. As the Zakru wander the Heart of the Plains too, not just the Upper Plains so some of us travel to not only gather trading items but also to keep company to the wandering giants. We paint them and make them beautiful. It makes them happy>” Vasat smiled.
Their conversation halted and soon, Alma helped them as they worked together to build up their tent. Not massive, not tiny either and they tied their hammocks to the reed supports.
It gave her a lot to see; to understand how their tents worked. It was still very open, but she noted how they built it up facing away from the wind. Using bone-based strakes to keep the fabric pinned to the ground. It was good to learn from and she helped with setting down the mats underneath as the group settled the baskets into the tent and settled down. Wayhe just set a mat down as they were out of space for the last hammock.
By then, the twilight had set in and soon, food was being prepped and cooking. Alma set her cook pot beside the fire to heat up, listening as the group conversed but mostly, Alma found herself talking to Vayhìp and sipping some sweet berry and milk tea. Like a hot milkshake but…wonderful.
“<Your Pa’li, she looks young. Has she been your mount for long, Ul’ma?>” Vayhìp was asking.
“<No, the Tsakarem of the clan, Okul found her and brought her to me before I left. They thought my travel would be safer on a mount. I had planned to travel by foot as I have no Ikran. I considered a Pa’li if I got to the Upper Plains.>” Alma explained, both watching as Leyapay once again began to follow one of the males with a clear… display of intent. “<Do you think she’ll be able to convince him?>”
Vayhìp watched with a grin as Leyapay huffed as the male dodged her. “<She is an eager one. I doubt she will succeed with him.>”
“<As someone who knows… little, do the Pa’li have heat cycles or do they take any opportunity to mate?>”
“<When they feel safe to do so, they’ll take the opportunity. Older Pa’li will mate but are often put off by eager ones with higher sexual drives. Your mare looked to be an adult but most likely never mated and has not conceived before. Since ours are all male, she is most likely feeling the instinctive desire to mate without female competition.. She may only have a chance with your youngest seat.>” he gestured to the smaller of the five, who was curled up and clearly relaxing. Leyapay had not noticed him yet.
“<Should we let it happen or let them get involved?>”
“<They do not mate for life. Pregnancy will last about 10 months but there is no guarantee of success if they do mate.>” Vayhìp didn’t sound concerned so Alma dropped it from there. It would hamper her travels if Leyapay got knocked up but she supposed she’d have to wait and see; a foal wouldn’t hurt in the long run if she was still travelling.
Soon enough, their food was cooked and Alma happily ate through her leftovers in gentle conversation.
“<What news do you have from the Upper Plains?>” Vasat asked curiously, pulling the attention to Alma as she did so. “<It is been six months since our last visit. You travelled through their land. Is all well?>”
Alma winced a little. “<A…a lot has happened. Sky people…>” She didn’t meet their eyes but they understood the implication. Their concern grew and she saw Vayhìp and Kìpe exchange worried looks before she reached for her son’s shoulder who was more occupied with eating than listening. Small blessings.
“<What did they do?>” Wayhe asked next, leaning forwards. “<The clan, are they well?>”
Alma stared into her cup for a moment. “<The clan lives. But… the Sky people brought down the Celebration arches. Many Zeswa were killed.>”
A few shocked gasps echoed in muffled horror. Vasat’s eyes narrowed, jaw tightening in distaste. Po’u’s hissed quietly.
“<The Zeswa, Aranahe, Kame’tire and a human resistance battled the sky people and took out the sky people home there and they have left the lands.>” Alma swiftly added, to stop the group from spiralling from the news. “<The battle was won. The victory was secured. The clans are healing now.>”
Vayhìp inhaled deeply, his eyes on his mate as Kìpe pulled their son into their lap and hugged him closely.
“<The Kame’tire joined the fight?>” There was a scoffed. “<After—>”
“<The Kame’tire are innocent of the believed crime.>” Alma interrupted Po’u who was speaking. She had a sense that the guy didn’t like her. Either because he noticed her extra fingers or just because he thought she was Kame’tire. But it didn’t matter to the why. “<Sky people targeted the Sarentu to take their children. Mokasa told the sky people where they would be and hid the truth and his part in it. He put the blame onto Anufi’s shoulders and she believed it. She is innocent.>” Alma omitted mentioning her own involvement as to them she was just a wanderer; they didn’t need to know. “<Mokasa has since been exiled from the clan. His actions do not reflect the clan as a whole.>” She glared him down a little.
Vayhìp held his hand out as Po’u went to speak, silencing the man’s words, “<Now is not a time for rising ire from another clan needlessly. If what Ul’ma is saying is right, we should not judge. We will hear far from our mother clan when we return to the Circle.>”
Po’u glowered before he begrudgingly nodded.
Alma took a steady breath herself, finishing up her meal and headed away and cleaned down her pot in the river. Nor was she alone for long before she felt another presence coming up behind her first before settling beside her.
“<I apologise for Po’u.>” Vasat’s voice was soft, “<He… has a history with some of your people, Ul’ma. I cannot share details but do not take his words to heart.>”
Alma shook her head. “<I do not care that his words are directed to me, but… I care for Anufi and the people I left behind. She…didn’t deserve that burden.>” And the fact was, despite her own part in it, Anufi did not hold her in the same light as Mokasa. Anufi had been concerned for her; getting her spirit transferred into a new body but cared for at the Hollows. Sending Okul out to check in on her… how could she not defend the Tsahìk’s honour? “<It will take time for the truth to settle.>”
Vasat stared for a moment then nodded. “<I take it you will go to the Spires to the Ke'awa Kame'tire? I heard they left after the clan pulled away, so they left the Hollows altogether. Will you let them know of the truth?>”
Alma remained quiet as night finally closed in, leaving darkness for a moment before the glow of the plants seemed to flow into delicate life.
“<I suppose so. My main objective was the Heart of the Plains given I had heard of its beauty and see which clans may accept me in the neighbouring areas but I could detour and see the Ke'awa Kame'tire. They deserve to know.>” She could… stay with the clan if they accepted her. The Kame’tire at the Hollows may not have accepted her, nor did they exile her but there was a chance here. She could ask. If not, then she could move on… see the rest of the world. The heartlands were empty of Na’vi, aside from these wandering traders and Zakru so really, it was a good place to still pass through. Maybe Anufi would appreciate it?
Vasat nodded once. “<We only plan to stay the night here. It is a shame we’re going in opposite directions.>”
“<Will you be going straight off tomorrow?>”
“<Why do you ask?>”
Alma hesitated, pondering about this… opportunity.“<I… I do not know how to hunt with a spear…or a bow for that matter, I barely know how to make a bow. I’m a better gatherer than a hunter. But I will need to know if I am to get meat. My own supplies are low. I need a long-term solution.>”
Vasat stared for a moment, “<You’ve not been trained?>”
“<I can fish with a spear. I would have learned before I left the Clouded forest but I was healing from wounds inflicted by the sky people. I could not stay longer.>” The healing burns were proof of that. They all saw it. “<My body now has the strength to wield a weapon that I didn’t have before.>”
The Zeswa trader eyed her for a long moment. “<Vayhìp is a patient trainer. I can ask him to help you learn the basics with our son’s training bow. Do you have supplies to craft a bow?>”
“<Okul did pack some strings that can be used for a bow but no branch.>” It was tucked away in her saddle bag. Made from Meer Deer tendon, if she wasn’t mistaken. She never thought to use it but it made sense as to why they included it; she’d have access to a string but she still had to make her bow. At least she had her notes on the process but still… trial and error.
“<You can make your own bow out of Scimitar Palm’s branches that grow within the feathered grasslands of the Heart of the Plains. A very pliable wood.>” Vasat noted, “They grow in the feathered grasslands. For high-quality branches, I’d recommend claiming the branches from Stone Landing.>”
“<Okay>” Sounded like a plan.
Vasat nodded once. “<I notice you are spinning a lot of thread. Are you creating something?>”
Alma finished cleaning her pot, “<I have no tent but I know I will need one sooner or later. I figured I could put a start into making one.”
The woman snorted softly. “<Thread and loom fabric is not the way for a whole tent, especially for the sharp winds and weather these regions had.>” She leads the way back towards the camp at a slow pace as she continues. “<Hide of the vekreng is the main material for our tents and easier to get but it does take life to provide you with the materials. If you cannot hunt for enough, then there is a camp in the Heartlands that you can trade for Vekreng hide or even a small tent. You can work with the camp to create something if you have little to trade with. The threads you’ve created could be useful if you’re willing to part with them.>”
“<What’s the camp called?>” That was good information to know; it would be more efficient to aid in this. Frankly, she was willing to make the months’ work to create something but this was far better. Sustainable even.
“<Shaded pool>” Her hand reached out, grasping her shoulder with clear importance to her next words “<There is a southern mountain close by called A Fools Retreat. Do not climb it. Just travel along the Teardrop Lake and its northern river and remain on its left side and you should be fine. The camp resides on an island in the river.>”
Alma’s ears perked up in alarm. “<Palulukan?>” There was little else that could cause this much concern, even in passing. Yet, she was grateful to know that. She didn’t want to die stupidly.
Vasat nodded. “<A mated pair, yes.>” She dropped her hand.
“<Thank you. I do not know the area…>”
Vasat snorted a little. “<We know it well. I will tell you more of what to expect, Kame’tire>”

thoughts as i rewatched mischa on the oc pod
these are mostly the thoughts i sent to my friend in real time lol i cannot help the stream of consciousness when it comes to this podcast episode apparently (here's my original thoughts pre-revelations)
funny how she says 17.5/18 at the top
seems that’s the age range she’s really latched onto, especially as she was 16 when the talks with McG really started and they filmed the pilot not even two months after she turned 17 (aka she's still aging herself up which is... interesting)
i'm reminded of peter gallagher on the podcast saying he was scared for mischa right from the beginning and how they all had a duty to protect her. and rachel saying mischa was "seasoned" because she'd been in movies and knew how to order a latte. and peter was like "she was still 16"
they keep referring to the hermosa party as manhattan beach (unless i’m the one messing up)
i forgot she mentioned josh’s name
“as with everything with like josh and them back then, it was like ‘maybe she should be drunker’” omg??
THE PAUSE BEFORE SAYING BENS NAME LMAO
oh she did notttt wanna complete that thought
“that whole exchange behind……… ben”
this reads so different now
i feel like rachel is so scared to talk in this ep
mischa with the tight lipped smile when rachel says it’s fun to see ben squirm on the ferris wheel
calling herself a baby/fetus in the ferris wheel scene... interesting
i cannot believe the gall of these women to make her watch this scene
the way mindy immediately says the bullshit patrick rush line of they had to cast people way older than her to make it believable on camera bc boys mature later? wtf. i bet she thought that was bullshit too
i love her so much for criticizing the 201 writing
the mount st mary’s thing... i wanna know what she means!!!
i can see mischa dissociating as melinda talks about the model home scene “there was so much that was real”
cannot believe mindy referenced this scene to her face
i’m so in shock how quickly mischa's tears came at the crash scene. quicker than rachel's
her not wanting to see him cry she’s so real
i think she hates seeing his face full stop
thank fucking god mindy tells her and the audience that the ratings went down bc she wasn’t there
i love that that’s on the record
that guy who called in about the 207 bagel scene should be our friend
i think mischa was getting overwhelmed by the time the final calls were coming in
i think a lot of memories good and bad were flooding in

What is the office superfan and the office ladies?
If I tag something “Superfans” it’s a reference to the Office Superfan Episodes on NBC’s streaming platform Peacock. Show Editor Dave Rogers is re-cutting all 9 seasons adding in deleted scenes and some never-before-seen footage. Every Superfan episode is about 4~8 minutes longer than the aired episode with lots of cut B-storylines added back in and some fleshing out of the main storylines. As of now there’s 6 of the 9 seasons up with new seasons being added roughly every 6 months.
Office Ladies Podcast is a rewatch podcast with Jenna Fischer (Pam) and Angela Kinsey (Angela Martin). It started October 2019 and every pod episode covers a single Office episode. They frequently have guests on, pretty much the entire main cast has been on at least once as well as writers and other crew and many of the show's guest stars. They're already to Season 8 but they are supposedly going to continue on after the rewatch is finished. It's not a particularly comprehensive Office pod if you're looking for deep lore or detailed analysis and they famously go off on lengthy tangents (though from what I hear they have better structure and stay on topic more than most celeb rewatch podcasts) but you'll definitely hear some interesting tidbits and learn plenty about things like the history of Carvel ice cream cakes.

Can You Make Evergreen Content on POD Inspired by Current Events or Trends? You Bet!
As common SEO and marketing convention shows, evergreen content on print-on-demand sites is king, compared to seasonal items and those explicitly based on current events. But what if a current event ACTUALLY inspires one to create evergreen items on a POD site?
Some of the items I sell on various Zazzle stores are based on then-current events. One collection series is Lead a Child Outside or to a Bookshelf. Ironically, the inspiration stemmed from articles of youths calling 911 for a bizarre reason on January 19, 2025: TikTok had a brief outage amid the Supreme Court's decision to ban the app that previous night.
They initially decided to uphold the ban due to privacy concerns, as TikTok was owned by Chinese media conglomerate ByteDance. Faced with the inevitable ennui that would result from the ban of the app, kids and teens in chiefly Oregon, Ohio, Minnesota, California, and Alabama took to EMT numbers to voice their distress over it.
The article sparked a memory of me calling 911 out of curiosity when I was 5 or 6, in the mid-90s, and my DM telling me off on it. I was too naive - naturally - to fully comprehend that calling it outside of emergencies would hinder first responders from responding to actual emergencies. My kindergarten teacher replied when I told her all about it the next day at school:
"NO 911."
Another takeaway point I obtained from reading those articles on TikTok-bereft youths calling 911 was knowing that making a POD design that would've simply told people to go outdoors or read more books was too trite. So, I decided to create a design that acknowledged FULLY the struggles of parents who are getting their kids to do either or (optimally) both by simply rewording the old horse-to-water axiom.
Tumblr media
The articles of youths phoning 911 over the American TikTok outage gave birth to the Lead a Child Outside or to a Bookshelf stationery and lifestyle item collections.
Hence my highly useful tips - leave out the direct references to the current events or trends. Keep on using relevant - and evergreen - tags for your products, both long and short. Just as with the Lead a Child Outside or to a Bookshelf series, I also put my tips in good use in the Full Contretemps stationery and lifestyle item collections.
youtube
Scroll to 38:43 for the inspo behind the Zazzle merch lines.
The Full Contretemps line stemmed from spates of social media videos of dancers attempting the medium allegro enchainement from the Berlin State Ballet's 2021 company class, streamed on that World Ballet Day, in summer 2023. Tomas Karlborg, who was then its ballet master, affectionately called it the "Pas de Balanchine variation," due to the fact that the combo ends in a grande pas de chat.
Some ballet teachers, when teaching the combo for whichever social media platform, fail to correctly label the steps in between the first 2 temps leves en avant: the full contretemps. It was that ballet term of which the design indirectly alludes to the then-viral medium allegro enchainement.
Tumblr media
"What we recommend is that 80% of your products should be evergreen and 20% seasonal," mother-daughter creator team Jen and Elke Clarke informed, "We recommend this because it has worked for us. With 14 years of experience on Zazzle, we have seen consistent and predictable income by maintaining a product inventory of 80% evergreen products." "If you set yourself up with 80% evergreen products and they start to sell consistently, you will feel more secure and confident because you will be able to predict how much money you’ll make over time as well. This is when you can feel that your Zazzle business is truly a business and not a hobby."
Be them in forms of enduring, perennial lessons learned from current events like reducing screen time for kids or dance steps from a trending ballet enchainement, evergreen content can be profitable by-products if done with SEO in mind.

no wonder lyrics workshopping
formatting is weird bc I took a bong rip and decided i needed to work it out in the youtube comments and then i was like no this goes to tumblr
From the 5/16 show but I'm about to watch the latest one and compare (5/27) and also belasco 3/22
youtube
She seems to still be working on the lyrics... I'm so excited to see what the final version will be. How she plays and adjusts the meter of the lyrics/melody over the harp... especially in II and III
[I]
Take it with me love
To a place it can be loved
Little bird, little [] [] shine
Little light of the undying
And I'll cover with dust, dear
Dig with your hands, dear
Gather our friends, dear
Silence and trust, dear
Stay through the winter
Wait for the splinter (leaving the city reference?)
And the green in the springtime
Queen and her kin[g] time
Eat the sweet fruit all summer
Falls pits like a bummer
And split in the autumn
Pit with no bottom
[II]
And after the fall, out in the country
In the long route with you, honey
And I call, daughter and son
Ours to adore, whatever may come
After our chores end and our money
And our scores are settled and done.
Darling I will stay til the last
Plates are all filled, trays are all passed
Ain't it a thrill, ain't it a gaff
Footed the bill, we feast and fast
At the foot of the hill,
We empty our glasses
And I follow you over
Call out the wonder
Will you follow me under?
Crawl through the shadows
Oh, how I love you,
Time will tell
I'll never tire of you
Just tired of myself, dear.
[II]
And as our days
Waft in a []
Our path is away
Soft as a dream
We laugh and we race
Off and ennui
Capture a stray
Pod in the breeze
Hammer a stake
Mark in our seed
Manage to rake,
Water, and weed
Hundred to one,
Our garden will grow
But wonder or none
I wanna be known
Wanna be stung
Wanna be shown
Want for no one but
You and your warm
Opening arms watching
The storm clouds,
[III]
Sail by our window
And darken the valley
Pale, pocked, and dimpled
Crocodile bellies
We wait all night and
Count the thunder
There is no lightnin'
It is no wonder
[II]
But just before dawn
Water comes streaming
In the dark, every beat
Burns like star blinking to sleep
Burns like a spark
Burrowing deep
Under the lawn
Quiet and green
Rain has begun
Honey come see
Wonder or none
Under the sun
Rising like steam
I wanna be seen
Wanna be eventually
Eventually
Grow through the winter
[I] And summer
Surely and slowly
Please don't shine out, wonder
Home with you, only.
