hi I'm sooooo fundamentally obsessed with your party oc lore and i come to you now to ask what the initial forming of the party was like!! what were their initial impressions of each other!! how did they originally form a group of professional adventurers, what was the story there? when did jace meet everyone? what's the early timeline on all the messy relationships and what kicked off the various jace/other party member hookups? did it take aurora a second to develop her grudge against jace and vice versa, or did they have it out for each other on sight? I want all the tea 👀

YAYYYYY IM SO GLAD YOU ASKED omg i literally screamed w joy when i saw this in my inbox last night... preemptively putting this under a cut bc i anticipate it getting long

so to start out i think that jace graduated from aguefort and then went to college. we don’t know a ton about colleges/post-secondary education in spyre aside from a couple of named places in the early eps of FHJY so i took that as permission to just. invent some. jace (in keeping w the idea of sorcery classes as art classes) went to the Arcane Arts Institute which is like, an analog for like. literally any art school in NYC. the student body culture is very nyu tisch (disaffected hipsters and gay people) combined with like, the prestige of parsons or the pratt institute or the school of visual arts. this is jace being like “i’m gonna get out of my shitty hometown and go to the BIG CITY and PROVE myself” 

[also as an aside bc this will likely never make it into a fic. I also made up a school for artificer programs thats called Mordenkainen’s Institute for Technomancy (MIT)]

the only person from his party who’s here is dagbert, who much like ragh is in an athletic program at another university, trying to go pro (he does not, like the majority of college athletes), and he and jace interact briefly in this ficlet, but not much throughout the rest of college. dagbert is busy with his classes and his athletic career, and jace is busy with classes and getting cheated on by guys who play electric bass. 

i think there are like, two other aguefort grads in the party, aurora and peregrine, who are a year and two years ahead of jace respectively, so they didnt interact much but jace does recognize the names. maybe a little unrealistic but like its a small world! two people from my irl high school in florida that had a graduating class of 85 people also moved over 1000 miles away from home to the midwest to work at the same company as i did!! crazy shit!! so there’s a bond there initially from being aguefort grads and growing up in elmville

so like the party is officially Formed by them all working for the council of chosen. like i think theyre all in their early to mid 20s looking for stable work:

jace (22) is like “well it’s this or try to find a fucking wizard to do an unpaid apprenticeship under in fallinel”

dagbert’s (25) athletic career falls through and he needs an alternate plan 

Peregrine (24) and aurora (23) are dating atp, peregrine wants a higher paying job and aurora is looking for a way to travel more for her mission work 

invidia (23) is like an established solo adventurer who’s been looking for a team bc she’s lonely

ysvelde (22) is an out-of-work actor who is about 3 seconds from pulling a patrick bateman style killing spree at the fantasy starbucks she’s working at. she NEEDS to move out of her mother’s house. 

they meet like a few weeks before they get sent out on their first mission as a team for like a “team cohesion” type thing; initially aurora peregrine and jace are like “omg we’re all from aguefort! thats so cool! did you have class with [insert teacher here]?” and jace and dagbert vaguely recall each other, but theyre all trying to be professional atp. but it doesnt take long (like a few days into their first mission) for invidia and jace to become the Party Besties bc theyre like moths to a flame. i think they find out that they like the same bands (in my head. jace and invidia listen to 90s riot grrrl) and hit it off from there. and jace and ysvelde are also bonding super quickly but like. most of that is ysvelde getting way too personal w jace way too quickly bc she finally found someone like her (no sense of identity and desperate to make friends by contorting yourself into whatever you think they’ll like). 

i dont have a suuuuuper solid timeline on the relationship drama bc i wanna keep it open for Extreme Mess potential. HOWEVER. peregrine and aurora’s relationship is SEVERELY strained by having to spend extended time in each others’ proximity without the distraction of anything else they have going on (friends who arent their mutual coworkers, jobs that dont have them working with each other, etc.). and when the relationship drama does start, jace cycles between peregrine (when he’s off-again with aurora) and ysvelde (who is so happy to finally be dating/sleeping with a guy who is actually attracted to women. fun fact about her, every single man she has dated turned out to be gay. the curse of being a straight woman in theater. s/o to kinsey 5 jace, it’s really doing a ton of heavy lifting here) with the occasional one-off thing with dagbert that doesnt involve a lot of emotional investment. 

the whole time jace and peregrine are falling harder for each other but peregrine is also desperate to settle down with someone as he gets older, and views aurora as the only “real” option because could you imagine if he brought jace home?? his parents would kill him! and somewhere in this poor ysvelde is like “jace what if we got married” and maybe in a manic episode threatens to have him eaten by her family of driders if he doesnt go through with it. dont worry it blows over they laugh about it eventually but jace Is afraid for his life briefly. 

NOW. jace and aurora’s whole deal. they kind of have friction right away after the initial recognition of having the same hometown wears off because jace is like “oh aurora is from that part of elmville, full of snobby helio-and-sol worshipping humans who think theyre better than everyone and pass judgment on everyone’s ‘lifestyle choices’ while being super hypocritical” and aurora is like “jace is an arrogant, hedonistic, heretical prick who’s way too comfortable making passes at my boyfriend and throws the fact that he gets special treatment from literally everyone we meet because he’s attractive and charismatic in everyone’s faces” and it slowly builds from there. but the buildup is slow, until ofc it’s not (peregrine comes clean about the fact that he’s been sleeping with jace for years during their breaks bc he feels like he cant propose to aurora without telling her about it, he doesnt want to go into a marriage with a guilty conscience)

I sat down and pieced together a first draft version of the “why and how and what” kinda deal explaining, mainly, why Etherivium is the way it is, how it is doing it, just... the general “what’s up” outline of the whole philosophical questions pertaining to the purpose and origin and whatever else is possible to ponder pertaining to not just life, but things existing at all.

Oh, and this is important to consider through this explanation, but the way in which Reality is structured and the way Concepts work and are used... it’s gonna be at times kind of vague when I describe it, due to the fact that I’m trying to explain cosmic forces that work with rules and conclusions and things like “infinity” and... well. It’s designed to be something much, much vaster, more complex, just unlike anything a human is meant to grasp. Just... fundamental laws and forces existing simply so it can be.

So, Etherivium was, at point that can’t be pinpointed in any sort of timeline due to the nature of Etheri’s structure and rules, it was a part of Etheri’s “body”, in a sense. By the nature of Etheri existing in every possible state in uncountable combinations of Concepts that generate finer and finer details, the inward expansion to match the Void’s outward expansion (if the possible amount of “space” is infinite within the theoretical limit of a Domain, the Void can be visualized as being “larger”, and always eroding away the limits of the “smaller” Etheri in that space it has established, while Etheri’s inward expansion matches the destruction of its “limits”, where it meets the Void, and ceases to be... They’re equal matches of creation and destruction.)

Anyway. With that in mind, Etherivium became its own separate entity, through the result of a possibility defying a counterpart to the fact that the Void is the counterpart to Etheri’s collective Concept of Existence. I’ve come to explain how this works by using the logic problem “Schrodinger’s Cat”, a paradox in which two Concepts that should render the other impossible, exist at the same time. Sort of. Life and Death are counterpart Concepts, basically perfect opposites in such a way that by all logic and all the things we’ve figured out and come to understand about the world, these two opposites can not exist at its most basic and fundamental state in a single (for simplicity’s sake) “thing” at the same time, because the presence of Life means that the “thing” is not Dead, while the opposite scenario should also be true, given that we are working in a theoretical “blank space” where there is only one way to define Life, Death, and the existence of the “thing” for which the Concepts apply. Through this logic/law/fact of how Reality should function, Life and Death can not coexist at equivalently opposite states, because this would result in a Paradox. Paradox referring to a logical feedback loop of, as I interpret it, fact and impossibility, so to speak, repeating constantly and creating a “glitch” or “error”. Due to the perfect duo of the concept of Infinity, and Existence, with the fact that Absence of Existence cannot manifest in totality within Etheri (simple summary of another long-ass TED talk on theoretical quantum mechanics of a Reality in which Magic is a factor (which is kind of the crux point for how and why this Reality functions as it does. Butterfly effect times ♾+1.) is that it’s another, different type of Paradox scenario, which works in tandem with the Void, and it’s the exception to the rule of everything existing in all possible and impossible states without collapsing... god I think I just realized what the fuck was going on with pre-calculus and those damn fictional numbers.) the result of the Paradox meeting a Counterconcept equivalent to it means that, indeed, opposites such as Life and Death can exist in the would-be impossible state of equivalent contradiction, without creating a critical error one would expect, because the one impossibility (and I mean a true, Word of God law of fact) that will never come to be throughout the Infinite combination of all things at once within the single, designated space for existence to be as it is (Etheri.) is for the Absence of All Concept to result. Through a separate but equal logical outcome of this, another Paradox can exist, as the law of Infinity -1. It’s Etheri’s crux point ensuring that Existence will never succumb to Absence of Existence, and will always replace that which is “lost” through the eternal expanse of its ultimate Creative force.

So, with that in mind, there should be an infinite generation of new, separate Realities splitting from Etheri, but due to a Paradox pertaining to the Void introducing the Conceptual Rule of Infinity -1 to that which Etheri uniquely cannot defy (there’s a sub-string of another infinite possible “broken” possibilities existing where the Paradox of, as simply as I can put it, another Paradox of a Concept negating the Paradox, in which interacts with itself and forms a chain of events that extend in theorictical contradiction forever... The Infinity -1 Paradox will never create one such broken sub-string, simply due to the nature of it being at a higher load priority than every other Concept, thus why I call it a Paradox. It should not exist and breaks all the rules, but it does anyway, without allowing those rules to be bent by the Infinity Concept as it would with other Paradoxes, and does not break the generation of Etheri’s realities by nature of being a Paradox defined by its preventing the Absence Concept from resulting within Etheri. That’s literally the singular exception to the rule, and as the one (1) exception, this fact of the Infinity -1 Paradox also prevents its existence from being replicated and added to the pool of Concepts that make up Etheri’s Concept of Creation.)

So with all that explained, Etherivium’s creation as a “Space” (the concept of space being used here to mean, a non Void which invokes the Concepts of Existence and Creation, which are similar concepts that are also slightly paradoxical in relation to the six Core Concepts (Energy, Absence of Energy, Life, Death, Chaos, and Order) which I use as the definitive structure for every universe that functions with rules like our own (+Concept of Magic, and all that it envelopes as another sort of subset of Core Concepts I’m considering) meaning that if there is not Void, then Existence is in its place, and if Existence is in place, then Creation is also there, and with the Concept of Creation present, then the Infinity -1 Paradox is invoked in tandem with the Concept of Infinity, meaning that the logical combination of these Concepts as facts prevents the Reality from being deleted by the Void.

However, the nature of Etherivium’s existence coming to be meant that it introduced an equivalent Paradox in which it is both Flawed, but by the presence of the Infinity Concept, and a simulataneous corruption of Fact due to the unstable structure of its rapidly changing Existence, the resulting Paradox string introduced a Sub-Concept of Imperfection to the forming structure of Etherivium’s developing catalogue of available Concepts, further corrupted in Paradoxes that instantly worked its way to the event string involving the Infinity Concept, and thus the structure of Etherivium became... warped, in a sense. Glitched, but functional, as the primordial sort of sentience Etherivium has as an entity was, unlike in the way that Etheri has maintained equilibrium with its clash of infinite possibilities countering and being countered by resulting Paradoxes— which meant that Etheri in a chronological sense we know of, never has had to act with its own Concept of Sentience in a significant event of preservation (It both has, and hasn’t, but all remains at equality due to the Infinity -1 Paradox preventing any conception of the Absence Concept (Void)) Etherivium’s culmination of Paradoxes ever so slightly overcoming the Infinity Concept’s interaction with the Infinity-1 Paradox and the resulting interaction with the Imperfection Concept in itself became both a Paradox that is not a Paradox that is a Paradox— this combination of events resulted in a manual restructure of Conceptual Law and Paradoxical Law in a string that never resulted in Etheri because of the Priority effect on the Infinity -1 Paradox having existed at the same time as the Conception of the Domain, as once the Domain existed, the Concept of Existence was true outside of the limits of Etheri, and thus when Etheri and the Void began, the Infinity -1 Paradox was actually present before the Existence Concept and the Creation Concept, without creating any other paradoxes due to its technical beginning in a vacuum and becoming relevant in the dawn of the Ashen Domain.

So, when Etherivium became as it is, the Infinity -1 Paradox actually occurred at a point in theoretical “time” that caused it to flaw its influence on Etherivium’s Existence Concept, because the birth of Etherivium was in a way it’s own sort of semi-break of rules, so in the introduction of the Existence Concept, there was a burst of possible strings of events that created the Glitch otherwise unavailable to Etheri’s possible outcomes, through the Infinity -1 Paradox removing the Absence Concept. Etherivium did not succumb to Absence’s purest and most literal form, however, as the Imperfection Concept crippled its ability to corrupt Concepts into incomplete forms had more sub-string chains that corrected the collapse of equilibrium between Paradoxes due to the Infinity-1 Paradox occurring, which in itself is a massive Paradox! Now rather than the equilibrium state that Etheri exists in, Etherivium is working on a new overriding set of Laws born from the glitch-chain of errors creating errors, by invoking its Concept of Sentience, which brought upon the “emergency panic button” born from the existence of the Infinity -1 Paradox. It being a Law of Etheri’s perfect state of Existence and Infinity brought upon a sort of theoretical Conceptual set unable to be used in any meaningful way so long as the Paradox remains Law.

the priory of the orange tree by samantha shannon!! yes this book is like 800 pages yes i did read half of it in like a week. i also didnt realize there was gonna be so many gays goin in and boy was i extremely pleasantly surprised

obligatory inclusion of a reading i did for class, but la vida es sueño by calderón de la barca honestly kinda kicks ass, i did a whole paper on one the soliloquies in there and the verse is just good y’all

oh also gender trouble by judith butler which i read a good bit of for my theory class and lives rent free in my brain at this point

and i moved across the country and live in an apartment now! and i have so many plants! and a full size bed! and a desk and a bookshelf!

and i’ve started writing a lot more! not just papers for class and stuff, but also some more fiction which maybe i’ll actually finish one day lmao

General Assembly Software Engineering Immersive

Hello All, instead of posting my normal content relating to cars and/or trucks, I will be taking a deeper dive into my daily life, particularly regarding the software engineering immersive program that I am currently undergoing, which is a technology bootcamp. For a couple of months, I am going to sway away from discussing different sectors within the automotive industry while I focus strictly on technology, but automotive is not going anywhere so stay tuned for big announcements following;)

What Is It?

Currently I’m completing General Assembly’s Software Development Immersive, which is a “12 week award-winning program that has expert instructors and career coaches, and connect graduates with 19k+ hiring partners to get them jobs at A-list companies.” It is slated as your best course for career transformation. The company boats 9,000+ hires, as it states that they are the leader in placing their grads into high-growth, and high-pay tech jobs. Yes, this is all accomplished within 12 weeks. I’m sure you’re asking, “Are these jobs guaranteed?” Of course not, but the company is quite confident. Continue reading as to “why?” after this quick infographic below illustrating what you can expect from this program.

Im currently entering into my 5th week of this program. On our first day, a General Assembly employee bursts in our classroom, after getting another graduate hired, and asked, “Did you guys here about our last cohort?”, which had ended a couple of months prior. We had no clue what she was referring to but then she claims that their last cohort had a 93%+ hire rate. Impressive right. Thats a way to bring some motivation if you had any doubts before. Who knows if this was the truth, but they were all very excited and I have personally heard from some earlier attendees about the jobs that they received after the course and some even during the last week or 2 of the course ending. Before this starts sounding like a fantasy world where you can spend the 3 months and someone else can spend 4-5 years getting a computer science degree and you both end up with the same job (very possible), I’m going to break things down a bit.

Tuition Options?

First, starting with cost, I feel that the tuition share agreement is the best payment option and allows many people who can’t afford it to have a chance at something that can be life changing. It is not yet available in all states, but it’s a great option if you are not trying to pay $14k(approximate tuition cost) out of pocket and upfront(or in a few payments).  Focusing on the $0 upfront income share agreement, it is structured very fair in my opinion. You are only required to pay an upfront $250 deposit until you land a software engineering job (ex: web development, full stack, etc) and depending on your location, entry level is probably hovering around $60k and above.

So if you don’t land a job, you are not at the hands of a huge loan that you cannot afford and most importantly, you’re not out of $14k+ that many pay to take the program. If you have additional experience in UX/UI design, and/or other skills for that matter, your pay can be a lot higher.

Income Share Agreement?

As far as General Assembly not offering the income share agreement not being offered in all states, specifically New York at the moment, I believe that it has to do with the amount of jobs being offered and the amount that are vacant. Here in the Greater Atlanta Area, the tech scene is taking on massive growth along with an abundant amount tech jobs that have yet to be filled. Whether it’s startups, fintech companies, or larger corporations, there is a massive demand for tech jobs in many industries here. I’m not sure of the availability in other cities and states in respective to the amount of tech workers seeking employment.

Adding to the tuition share agreement option, applicants are also subject to a more strict batch of pre course work, along with an evaluation to see if you are prepared and can be successful at this program. My pre course work (estimated to take 40 hours if you have prior knowledge) took me at least 60+ hours, and thats literally. Going through the pre course work, I decided to take notes and continue to reference them even when the program started so that I could truly retain the information, just as I would with another language until I could demonstrate it effortlessly.

Negatives?

The only negative to this income share agreement is that the total amount paid for the course increases to approximately $20,000, instead of the $14,000 that you could sign up for up front after getting accepted. Although this $20,000 will be paid for over a multiple of years (small monthly payments ranging from $300-$800 per month), depending on how much income you are making per year with the lower end being around the $50k end and the upper being $100k+ end.

That is where the trade off comes in, as you decide whether you would want to pay $14k up front or $20k over a multiple of 3-5 years. Simply put, both options come with what some will see as a hefty price but when compared to the average college tuition for 3-5 years, it is significantly less. So is it worth it?  My simple answer: Yes, but its not for everyone and also depends on how much time you willing to dedicate!

What does it take?

Personally, as I’m approaching week 5 in the 12 week program, I would say that it is well worth it. This may not be the same for everyone else. There are so many factors that go into this decision and realizing if it is worth it for you or not. First off, the program is 12 weeks long and runs on a very strict schedule, from Monday – Friday (9am-5pm). All of my cohort(class) had to quit their jobs, and/or whatever else they were doing including school, etc. This IS NOT just a 9-5 job for three months. Ample time is required outside of class for this program to be worth it. You get what you give. Currently, it is very normal for me and my “codemates” to spend another 20-40+hours outside of class per week, on top of our current 9-5 days.

Being Prepared?

Handling this amount of work in such a short period of time is life changing mentally, physically, socially, and financially of course. Savings is required as it’s almost impossible to take on a full time job during this time. Knowing how to handle stress and pressure is also very important, as there will be a lot of ups and downs during the course. Another importance is your family and support. Your time will be very limited during this time, so just be prepared to be a bit disconnected during this time.

For me, personally, I had no real coding experience before starting the pre work for this program, but doing a lot of studying in the year prior to signing up for the program certainly helped with knowing different technologies and frameworks, and what they were used for. Regardless, free time gets pretty scarce during this time of development. It is extremely tough to stay consistent with a certain level of focus each and every day in this program, as it’s basically like learning a new language. So, being prepared is very critical.

The Daily Grind?

Each and every day has a structured schedule that we are given at the beginning of the cohort. The days normally start with lecture, or a quick meeting if it’s project week. Throughout the day, we go through enormous amounts of material, but it’s never just a lecture. Practice, practice, and more practice! Daily learning on how to structure, develop, and implement responsive webpages and applications from the ground up. This is where General Assembly separates itself from just trying to read and learn to code online, or even while pursuing a 4 year computer science degree while spending meaningless time on classes and material that you don’t need or ever use again.

As the saying goes, if you want to learn Chinese, the fastest way is to get dropped directly into the middle of China! This is the exact same. You’re being thrown right into the programming fire everyday, but in a good way. All of the new information learned is always directly followed by practice, as you jump right into the CLI(command line interface) and your IDE(integrated development environment). HTML, and CSS fly by within the first couple of days and then you will be jumping directly into Javascript. After that, you are off and running, and thats when the real challenge starts and the bulk of the course begins.

Is It Really Worth It?

All in all, I think it is definitely worth it if you have a passion to work in tech, whether to create your dream company or to work for another. This is the case, but this immersive program is not something that you spend a little time on and make it into a small side gig. If that’s what you’re looking for, then programming may not be ideal for you. It takes intense focus and dedication to be successful in the field. One mistake can crash an entire program, or maybe even delete an entire database and cause the company to crash. What if someone deleted the entire database of Uber drivers because they told the computer an incorrect command? Of course this would not happen, as their infrastructure has too much sophistication for that to happen, but the company would literally be out of operations for who knows how long and this would cause the end of one of the biggest companies that the world has ever seen.

If you’re not passionate about it, and that goes for anything in life, then you shouldn’t waste your time and/or money. It is also only worth it if you have time. This point needs to be emphasized. For example: If you have a family and can’t afford to quit your full time job, this is not a good idea. I’ve found that many who go through these programs don’t have many responsibilities at the moment, or they have wonderful supporters around them who help them throughout the duration. The immersive is very time consuming, and some may find it easier than others, but the amount of time that has to be put in is undeniable.

In a quick rundown, within 5 weeks, I have learned HTML, CSS, Javascript/jQuery, started creating our own servers, learning node, express, mongoDB, certain data structures and science, and so much more underlying information. This is not everything, and has taken massive work outside of class along with in class work and lecture. Just 5 weeks ago, I wouldn’t even know where to start.

Why Would You Put Yourself Through Such a Daunting Task?

For me, taking this leap was about being creative and bringing my ideas to life, as I push to provide immense value to this world for decades to come. My friends have always told me that I have all of the ideas, but to me they meant nothing if I could never bring them to life. I avoided obtaining these skills for the simple reason of believing that they were too time consuming, or that it was too old to start now, or simply because of me believing that I didn’t belong in that time of environment (the common imposture syndrome). Whether you’re a cook, waitress, sales associate, truck driver, garbage truck operator or whatever it may be, you can be successful not only in this program, but in this career field as a whole.

All of these technologies are fairly new, relative to our society, and if you spend 10+ hours a day on something while someone else maybe spends a hour every few days, you will be amazed at how far you can go. If you are thinking of a career change, or simply love the tech field and need this sort of structure to learn, I will highly advise taking General Assembly’s Software Engineering Immersive if time and your situation persists. You will also hear the phrases “Web Developer”, “Full Stack Developer”, etc associated with software engineering as a lot of the knowledge intertwines.

very avg growin up, went to classes and parties jus like everyone else. lived that ideal white picket fence fantasy except without the fence and then she went off to college in washington dc. she changed her major like three times before settling on international affairs with hopes of becoming an ambassador. applied to grad schools around the country to get a masters of public affairs and did all that work to get in and then somehow ??? just mentally crashed ?? three weeks before graduation she just sort of stopped doing her work and keeping up with her activities. she just told herself it was a little slump and when she got a few acceptance letters she just felt even more exhausted and couldn’t even look at them ?? so she tossed them into a corner of her room before moving back home to oakport. 

her parents moved away from oakport and into a nearby city two years after she left for college but they kept the house she grew up in and she pays them rent to stay there. she doesn’t plan on staying for too long but like ??? who knows ukno she already been there nearly two years. she’s confused and absolutely refuses to think about her future and where she sees herself in a few months let alone years 

up until the age of sixteen, she wanted to be a writer and so she wrote a little children’s book about a group of animals in a zoo living their daily lives and her parents helped her publish it. the book went on to sell five copies !! two of which were purchased by her parents and aunt. and then her passion for writing soon died down. 

literally obsessed w memes and u will see her dab unironically to embarrass her friends. has once taken two naps in a day after sleeping for 11 hours at night. too lazy to cook and also afraid of oil splashing and burning her so she tends to eat out a lot which is .,, quite bad for her wallet yikes. is actually a bit of a mess. responsible tho like she'll pay her bills on time and do her laundry but she will also make terrible decisions 

worked as a barista for a few months but quit because she was tired of saying “can you please swipe your card instead of inserting it” and also of not being able to paint her nails and smelling like old coffee constantly and is now a hostess 

she wants to go back to school or find a job that puts her degree into use but her gap year turned into two years and she has made no initiative in doing any of those things
