Memento Moria
Tumblr media
Kiiiii-shi-shi-shi! Happy Halloween! Last time we took the whole month for Victoria Cindry with our #Spooky Sidestory. That was fun, if you don't know Cindry always borrowed from a famous ghost story about a spirit named Okiku. Which means you maybe need to think a little more in hindsight about her being an actress whose story relies on a theme of toxic obligation. We touched on Moria a bit, how he serves as a warning to what lies ahead. But I always wanted to give him his due. He's such a good seed for the yonko; baiting the idea of separating the crew, the zombies as an analogue for infighting, his shadow keeping you from even touching him. How many people did he beat without lifting a finger? This becomes a huge motif by Totland & Wano.
Moria is a great villain, though I'll never fault a younger fan for not quite getting it yet. Other characters share this idea of their dreams dashed by the buzzsaw of the New World, but Moria is the one who really embodies it. He's not just someone who experienced loss, he's defined by it. I mean this in the nicest way possible, you won't truly relate to Moria unless you've had some kind of tangible past success. Laurels to rest on long enough you know how dangerous that can be. I love this "whiteout" panel, how his face looks so bat-like. If you need a refresher on why this pertains to Kiku:
Tumblr media
Kiku's introduction already leans on drawing from One Piece's history, subtly baiting key associations. Bat-Man being one of the first Gifters is certainly a choice, and his extremely shallotesque shape reinforces the reference. For those who don't know, Moria's animal motif isn't a gecko. It's a bat, Gecko Moria. Komori=bat. That in Kiku's intro is worth pointing out alone, much moreso when we get an update on Moria paired with a reflection (Catarina) of what we just highlighted out of the star of the first act. Those two are solid thematically, now add the Ringo ripple.
Does it have to mean anything? No, but theoretically if we wanted to have one of the Akazaya involved somehow there's a certain logic to Kiku the Ringo native being the intuitive choice. It's just like the Shanks/Buggy angle. We have someone so oddly worldly in Wano and yet again a known thread is set up it can easily run through her. I might actually want to see a flashback of Kiku & Moria having a chance encounter over Shanks. If only because I can guess how Shanks would go. You think Moria might make a play at recruiting the demonic prodigy of the Akazaya? Say what you will about his necromancy, which I'd imagine Kiku would abhor, I don't see Moria being the type to care about the trans aspect. Being earnestly good about it like Luffy seems reasonable.
Tumblr media
Moria though, just as a villain he's grown on me. Or really I've grown, lost groups of people I once felt brought out the best in me. Lazily replaced them with shadows, spun my wheels in a position that sounded like a good enough spot to be in. I get Moria, he's kinda over it but hasn't fully given up. Just taking a lazier, safer approach because he's scared of what lies ahead. Shadows Asgard and taking in 1000 shadows is a big example of growing on me. Makes so much more sense when you see how Kaido/Wano builds off of the concept. Moria has the power to be a top contender, he doesn't have the will to control it. Shadow Asgard, false divinity.
Back then, even the Straw Hats see it right away. Luffy turns to the crew and tells them to take care of the rest cause he's gonna get reckless. I love the parallel of Luffy having to take on a taste of Moria's true power and Zoro well, that time when nothing happened. Kuma's getting plenty of focus now but we'll wait until the flashback ends to do him proper. Keeping that strong and famous crew he could count on over more zombie mooks won the day. That under the threat of daybreak is good shit.

Day 5 of reading Beatles RPF
On our way back home by Kathleenishereagain || 5/56
Reading a chapter while my laundry gets dried (and hoping the dryer actually works today XD)
Though, first things first, I feel I should mention that thanks to @indiekidsupremacist and @the-bluebird-you-need, I now know that not only is there one Beatles movie, but multiple! I think I'll need to put time aside to watch them at some point. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. When reading Beatles fanfiction, watch Beatles movies. For research purposes. Obviously.
In the meantime, I did think of something else I could do. A few songs have been mentioned in the fic so far, and it seems a little silly to go on like this without listening to their music. How can you understand why people are fans of a band without hearing what the band's most known for? So, I picked the first one the fic brought up, "I Feel Fine".
youtube
This was so fun. The song itself is great (and catchy. Yeah, that's going to be stuck in my head for a week.) And at one point in the music video, one of them (the comments say it's Ringo) just?? gets on a bike?? and stays on it the rest of the song?????? Brilliant, fantastic, no notes.
Anyway, we're here for fic, and I absolutely have to share this passage that made me look away from my phone for a minute and just absorb it.
He did not have anything to tell him that he actually could say, anyway. Sorry I was an absolute wanker to you. Sorry I didn’t try to talk to you sooner. That I didn’t make more effort to patch things up between us. Sorry you died. I miss you. I have missed you for almost 40 years and I will never stop missing you. Seeing you so young and clueless is more painful than you could ever imagine. Talking to you makes me want to scream. It makes my head turn with happy fireworks and my belly burn with grief. He could not say any of that.
Just. Holy shit. That struck hard and fast, and the rest of the chapter didn't pull any punches either. I'm a huge fan of time travel related angst, so it's like this was tailor-made for me. With every chapter, I'm drawn more and more in.
(I think I mentioned before that I started this blog on a whim, half-joking. Not disrespectful, I should hope, as I didn't want to come into a fandom I'm not a part of and make a mockery of someone's hard work. I'm genuine in my desire to experience this and understand what draws people to it (and I suspect, will become a fan myself in time), but I won't lie and say I didn't come into this with preconceived biases about RPF. Which, to be honest, was a little hypocritical of me. Don't laugh, but my side projects are mostly Supernatural fanfiction, and I can see how easily someone might approach that with the same feelings I did this, whereas I, on the inside and putting my heart into it, take it very seriously. So, solidarity there, I think. We are all weird guys on the internet writing heartfelt love letters to things that matter to us.)
It's still fascinating to me getting little crumbs of knowledge, some of them devastating, chapter by chapter. I expect someone fully immersed in the history of the band and each member would take these in stride, facts they already know well, but some of them really throw me for a loop. The one this chapter was a mention that Paul didn't go to his father's funeral, or couldn't go. It wasn't specified why, and it's a drop in the bucket of this chapter, but it stuck in my mind nonetheless.
Oh, and I have a solid grasp of the distance between London and Liverpool now. The fic said a trip between the two would take about four hours by car, and Google provided me the helpful number of 354 kilometers. (Or, in American, for me, 220 miles.) That's further than the distance I used to go to visit my Grandpa in Mississippi.

do you have any theories about the india trip ?? personally, im not sure what to think about it, but i’d love to hear your thoughts !!
(Sorry its taken me so long to answer this - it just got lost in my drafts cause im an idiot lmao 🤦‍♀️)
Im not entirely certain on what I believe happened in India, if in fact anything did happen at all - but more on that later! I guess though that these are the main theories (though if you have any differing opinions/theories, feel free to discuss them!):
1. Paul rejected John’s advancements
2. John wanted to further their relationship, and Paul wanted to maintain the ‘friends with benefits’ situation they already had
3. Nothing significant happened between the two (yet something still changed in John)
I’ll try to discuss which theories I find the most convincing, compelling and substantiated - as well as offering my own opinions and hypothesis’s ^^ (discussion bellow the cut)
1. Paul rejected John’s advancements
The theory I would say im most drawn to - not the theory that im necessarily most convinced by though - is that John made a move on Paul, after a few years of pining for him, and was subsequently rejected. Its a theory that I tend to be compelled by, but I have to admit that its one I struggle to justify entirely. The problem with this theory, for me, is that this is a conclusion ive drawn based mostly off of what their relationship appeared to look like after India. It seems as though something must have happened between them to have ruptured their relationship as profoundly as it did - and because they were on relatively good terms before India*, combined with certain inferences we could draw from comments John made regarding his feelings towards Paul and their relationship, it feels as though it’s possible that he made an advance on Paul, which was rejected and thus caused the ultimate disintegration of the Lennon/McCartney relationship.
(*I mean, their relationship was always complicated and difficult - but it seems that it was okay-ish prior to India, and then just inexplicably plummeted after the trip)
But nobody (as far as im aware) has confirmed, or even really alluded to, this advancement or rejection ever having happened. And the lack of evidence substantiating the claim is a major draw back for me!
However, I do also feel as though nobody’s really come out about anything that happened in India - all ive heard is that they meditated, wrote songs, John and Cyn fought, and Ringo ate baked beans. But like, more must have happened on the trip, surely? Im not saying the absence of information regarding the trip is proof that there was a big “lovers quarrel” between John and Paul, and that everyone involved in that trip is now just sworn to secrecy or something - but like, id just like to see a biographer really investigate the holiday, and try to conclude what events might have occurred during the trip, because as of right now, with the information we have, it seems to have been, bizarrely, both a lacklustre and uneventful, yet still hugely impactful event. If the narrative of the “India trip” were to be shifted in the future in light of new information, the same way the narrative of “Let It Be/Get Back” is being changed, I wouldn’t be surprised!
2. John wanted more, but Paul didn’t
Another popular theory is that John and Paul were engaged in something of a physical affair, but in India John proposed (or perhaps demanded even) that they take their relationship further, and Paul just wasn’t compelled to do so.
Beliefs vary regarding this, based on how far you personally think their relationship went: some might say they only ever did a little drunken experimenting with one another, and that it was just a fun fling until John suggested they take it further. Others might argue that they were in fact in a committed relationship, and John wanted to go public with it - or at the very least, demanded exclusivity between him and Paul.
In entertaining this theory, im most compelled to believe that John and Paul were engaged in occasional “flings”, and perhaps by ‘68 were even acknowledging that there was some deeper and more sincere between them - but ultimately, I don’t think Paul would have ever been inclined to fully commit to John, because I think he always wanted children and a family. In addition to this, though its clear John and Paul were passionate about one another, it isn’t clear how compatible they were in the long term - and with Paul being the more grounded of the too, I suspect he would have recognised this incompatibility, which John (the idealist) might not have.
Though I admit that John could certainly be unrealistic and irrational, im not convinced that he suggested to Paul they go public with their relationship, because I think John still had a fairly strong sense of his place in popular culture, and would have still been able to recognise that if they were to “come out”, it would probably deeply and irreparably damage both their careers - as well as George and Ringo’s too - at least amongst the general public. They’d still have some ardent fans, but their following overall would have become far more niche, and the “beatlemania” would’ve worn off swiftly. Im not sure if either of them would’ve been willing to take that heat in ‘68, especially not Paul, who as I mentioned earlier, I think might have recognised the futility and incompatibility inherent in their relationship.
Then again though, John was always a little “cocky”* when it came to his sexuality - I think if an interviewer were to genuinely have enquired into his sexuality, straight up asking him “Are you bi? Gay?” I get the sense that he would have told us! Sure he’d probably have dressed the response up with a dozen quick quips and jokes, but ultimately, I think he would have given a sincere response. And so, perhaps he did feel he had the confidence, at least in India, to actually “come out”, but if Paul wasn’t willing to make this official with him, perhaps this confidence dissipated.
(*No pun intended you pervs🤦‍♂️)
Another thing to note about India is that they’d have been relatively secluded, as well as off the drugs/drinks for the most part - and this would have forced them to really reflect upon their relationship. Perhaps John saw that he wasn’t contented with Cynthia, and recognised his desire for more from Paul - and so in such a raw state of mind, I can see how he’d become so shattered if Paul were to have rejected him (that statement could relate both to the first and second theory, I feel). Perhaps John made an advance upon Paul whilst they were both sober for the first time, and that changed their relationship somehow? Just thinking out loud here!
But again, this theory overall has the same problem as the first in that, though it appears to make sense, it still lacks proof; it ultimately isn’t a substantiated claim.
3. Nothing happened between J&P, but something changed
This is probably the theory that everybody is least interested in hearing, but I still think its a pretty valid one, albeit the least dramatic (In my opinion though its still a really interesting perspective to explore though!).
Its possible that nothing of particular significance happened in India, but something still shifted in John, causing him to vilify and reject Paul. The issue with this though, is that it begs the question: why did John undergo such a significant change in India then?
Id argue that perhaps John was making very subtle and slight moves towards Paul, that Paul either ignored or didn't pick up on. Id assume that perhaps John had been hinting at this desire for awhile now, and maybe he got it into his head that in India, where him and Paul would have a lot of time to be alone and intimate, his feelings would finally be reciprocated. But then, Paul never picked up on these hints, and never made any advancements - and this broke something within John. It would fit neatly within the Yoko narrative, because it offers reasoning to the abrupt but intense attachment John formed towards her almost immediately after India - as well as explaining the sudden vilification of Paul. But I suppose that the first two theories also fit pretty neatly within the Yoko narrative, because they all relate to the same basic concept that John wanted more from Paul, and Paul didn’t - and so he tried to replace him with Yoko.
I suppose though, that the this theory overall could also be countered by making the argument that Paul also began to spiral after India, and so some occurrence presumably must have happened to Paul too. I wonder though if its possible that maybe Pauls spiralling was kind of a result of Johns? I get the sense though that Paul would need a change in his life to cause his mental health to seriously deteriorate, but I don’t feel like the same is necessarily true for John - I think John is sort of the type to spiral, irregardless of whether his life undergoes a significant change or not, because I think John was the force driving a lot of the drama and troubles throughout his lifetime. So if Johns mental well-being started seriously deteriorating, I can see this being a cause of panic and anxiety for Paul.
But something that further inclines me to believe that an actual event occurred between John and Paul is this extract from Geoff Emmericks memoir (x)(id recommend reading the entire extract, its interesting!):
‘I glanced in Paul’s direction. He was staring straight ahead, expressionless and weary. He didn’t have much to say about India that day, or any other. I sensed at that moment that something fundamental in them had changed.”’
It just really feels as though there was some confrontation between John and Paul that had to have happened to perpetuate the miscommunication later seen between them. Like if there hadn’t been some kind of confrontation, then I can’t really understand why Paul would be reluctant to speak about India, or harbour any regrets or dismay regarding the journey. Perhaps you could drill it down to the betrayal they appeared to have felt by Maharishi allegedly hitting on girls - but I feel like this was a “betrayal” mostly felt by John, I never really got the sense that Paul was deeply effected by it.
But yeah - those are the main theories I think.
Overall, I think that the third theory is probably the most substantiated claim, but I think it leaves a lot to desired. It just doesn’t feel like it totally fits together, as though theres more to the story - but I guess relationships and peoples psyches aren’t puzzles, and so not everything is always going to piece together perfectly; but I dunno.
Like I said though, the theory im most compelled by is the first. I acknowledge that it lacks evidence, but it just seems to make a lot of sense to me! But really, who knows what the hell happened in India?
If anyone else has an opinion on all this, or wants to expand upon or even suggest a new theory, feel free to! I always like hearing from you guys!

Edd in the Monster High AU. Also, I have him always holding a cola for some reason in the same hand pose whenever I draw him...huh. Anyways, I decided to make him a robot based off of Eddbot (the character made to represent the official EW discord bot.) I based his design off of several other designs for Eddbot, such as this design from Amino by Altyra. Also got the coat from some dude from Atelier (idk who it is, I saw the outfit on an MMD mod thing). And the socks + shoes thing came from the Photoshoot AU design of Edd by DDG11YT which was what MH!Blaze's boots are based off of as well.
Bio, Abilties, Bonus Notes, Version without text and Skullette, and Skullette are down below!.
Bio
Parents
A Roboticist (He was "Built" rather than "Born")
Age
17
Killer Style
Can't say I really have a specific "style", If it's comfortable, I'll wear it. Can't go wrong with a green hoodie or coat though.
Freaky Flaw
Let's just say the things I do for my favorite things are...extreme. I often let them take priority over everything else, including my friends.
Pet
My parents built me a robot cat who I named Ringo. It's so cute when she comes to lay on my lap while I pet her. I'm still waiting for the day they put fur on her though, petting metal isn't the most pleasant experience.
Favorite Activity
Just take one look in my sketchbook and you'll see that I'm a drawing machine (literally so). I almost got sent to detention a few times because I kept doodling during class. Oh, and I love to make puns. One could say my jokes are pretty "pun-derful".
Pet Peeve
Being the team leader and peacemaker, especially with friends such as mine, it's not as easy as you might think. I'll leave it at that.
Favorite Subject
Art, naturally.
Least Favorite Subject
Any class that's boring to me, I don't have any specific class in mind so far.
Favorite Color(s)
Green
Favorite Food(s)
Cola is the number one favorite drink, I'm not joking when I say I can't live without it. Bacon is my favorite food. But you wanna know what's better than both? Having them together, with bacon cola!
Friends
Tom Ridgewood(BFF)
Matt Hargrove (BFF)
Tord Karlsen (BFF)
Blaze Thorburn (BFF)
Katrine DeMew
Laurel Darling
Abilities
Edd was built and programmed with various functions, therefore he has stuff like.
Pain Immunity
According to the Ghoulfriends books, robots can't feel pain.
Voice Changing/Mimicry
Due to his voice being programmed into him in the form of a voicebank in his CPU (his brain), Edd is able to change how his voice sounds by accessing said box. There, he can change to whatever voice he wants, as long as he's heard it before.
Head Liberation
If Edd is ever decapitated, he can still blink, speak, and hear, but really can't to anything else beyond that, as the rest of his body is considered "disconnected" from the CPU.
Scanning
Edd can use his eyes to scan anything and anyone to gather information and data on it/them. When he scans things, his eyes turn completely neon green.
Poison and Disease Immunity
Due to not having a bloodstream (at least not a traditional one), Edd is immune to things such as poisons, venoms (such as Eduardo's), infections, viruses, and illnesses that would effect or even kill most organic beings. The only thing he isn't immune to are computer viruses, and even those are rare.
Bonus Notes
(More to possibly be added in the future)
Edd was made waterproof due to him wanting to drink cola. As he was not originally built for water related purposes.
Edd can still eat and drink despite not needing to.
Like Hex from FNF, he can always tell what time it is thanks to his processor.

Movie Review | Reservoir Dogs (Tarantino, 1992)
Tumblr media
This review contains spoilers.
For the past few years, I didn’t spend a lot of time rewatching movies. Quite frankly, the thrill of discovering something new (and the risk that it might not be all that good) outweighed the pleasures of the familiar ninety-nine times out of a hundred. Yet this year, perhaps because it’s been so miserable on the whole, I’ve spent a bit more time revisiting films I’d already seen. In some cases, it was to relive the joy of seeing something I already liked or loved. But in other cases, perhaps because I’d been easier to please on average, I would go back to things I’d felt somewhat at a distance to in the hopes that I would finally be won over. Full Metal Jacket finally clicked with me (seeing it in a different aspect ratio did the trick) and I’ve warmed up to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 as much as I probably ever will. With that in mind, and prompted by a bizarre dream in which I watched it on Netflix in the wee hours of the morning, I ended up waking up stupid early and giving Reservoir Dogs another viewing. (The dream wasn’t terribly interesting, although it did involve me watching the new Scream, which had magically already been completed and was available on Netflix. There was a lot of yellowish, Fincher-esque lighting and Alison Brie got thrown over a railing at one point. As someone who enjoyed the fourth, I was upset by that turn of events, but dreams can be upsetting. In the words of the Shogun Assassin in Shogun Assassin, “bad dreams are only dreams.”)
I don’t think my opinion changed all that much with this viewing. I still feel that it’s one of Tarantino’s weaker films, lacking the confidence and depth of his next few films. I think Tarantino’s career is generally discussed as being split into his earlier, more story-oriented or reality-grounded films and his later, more indulgent genre pastiches, but I think this one lacks the focus that kind of discourse implies. The characters are barely fleshed out and the directorial touches aren’t as purposeful or effective as they would become in his later work. But at the same time, it’s still a stylish and highly entertaining affair, with a great cast giving some very good performances and delivering some punchy, very funny dialogue. It’s pleasures and limitations are obvious and have been better discussed by those more eloquent than me, so I don’t know how deeply I’ll delve into them. (On a side note, I felt a strange pang of nostalgia revisiting this despite it never having been a favourite of mine. It was very big among the internet crowd I first started discussing film with as I first got into the subject, so it’s hard for me to separate those feelings from the actual movie. I got the same feeling watching Boogie Nights a few weeks ago, despite never having seen that film until now.)
But what I did chew over a bit more this time around is how the movie positions the characters’ morality. We know that Tim Roth’s Mr. Orange is the “good guy”, the undercover cop who kills the psychopathic Mr. Blonde played by Michael Madsen. But at the same time he betrays the trust of Harvey Keitel’s Mr. White. Mr. White is sort of a “good guy” too, but foolishly risks his own fate and those of his associates as he bonds with someone who sets him up. Mr. Blonde is a sadistic psychopath but also extremely loyal, having refused to rat out his friends while serving a tough prison term. Steve Buscemi’s Mr. Pink is entirely business-minded and self-interested, but is that really any less honourable than the intentions of those around him? Chris Penn’s Nice Guy Eddie loves his father, Lawrence Tierney’s Joe Cabot, who is the closest thing to a paternal, authoritative presence in the movie, but both are also extremely ruthless, not to mention racist. Tarantino’s relationship with race is complicated (he’s been criticized for his use of the n-word, particularly in a certain scene in Pulp Fiction, and while I do enjoy his performance in that movie, I’m not sure I can defend a certain line of dialogue), but here the characters’ rampant use of racial slurs seems like a clear indicator of their (lack of) character. (These characters also freely use homophobic slurs, but such language was unfortunately a mainstay of macho dialogue at the time and doesn’t seem as pointed a comment on their natures.) Even when Mr. Orange praises the connection he used to get in with the criminals, another character is quick to point out that the connection is ratting out his friends. There’s some moral relativism in my argument here, but the movie invites that line of thought. Reservoir Dogs is about a bunch of lowlife crooks and despite the extent to which we may identify with them, it never lets us forget that.
In that sense, it’s in clear contrast to some of its influences. Ringo Lam’s City on Fire features the same plot but emphasizes the value of brotherhood between the criminals, so that the betrayal there stings extra hard. Tarantino highlights the meaninglessness of such appeals to solidarity. (Bizarrely, Tarantino has denied having seen that other film despite the hard to ignore story similarities. He even dedicated the screenplay to Chow Yun Fat and pulls the image of a dual wielding gunman in sunglasses from that actor’s oeuvre and has made a brand of pulling from his influences, so I’m baffled why he’d deny this one instance.) Jean-Pierre Melville’s work features gangsters in tailoring adhering to strict codes and conducting themselves with honour in dire situations. Tarantino points out the futility of such codes. His next film handles these dynamics even more elegantly. In Pulp Fiction, John Travolta’s character is a villain in one segment and a hero in another, while Samuel L. Jackson’s character reflects on the dishonourable nature of their work and decides to walk away at the end.
Where I think Pulp Fiction succeeds in handling that theme is that it gives us a sense of Jackson and Travolta contemplating (or failing to do so, respectively) their choices and having something resembling actual worldviews (however limited, as in the case of the latter). The characters in Reservoir Dogs in contrast are drawn in shorthand from gangster cliches so that our identification with them is limited. Mr. Orange should be our audience vantage point, but Tarantino fumbles a key scene in which he relates a made-up story to ingratiate himself with the other criminals. It should be about how Mr. Orange wins their trust, which would help make later speculation on his loyalty more dramatically potent, but in choosing to actually depict the proceedings in the story onscreen, Tarantino makes it about the cuts and shot choices he energetically deploys. It’s not a badly directed scene on its own, but the wrong one for the movie. Yet in other scenes, like the opening in the diner, he’s able to elegantly paint character detail while letting us enjoy the surface pleasure of the dialogue. Mr. Pink refuses to tip as an extension of his business-minded nature. Mr. Blonde volunteers to shoot Mr. White, jokingly revealing his bloodthirst. Mr. White takes things too personally (”You shoot me in a dream, you better wake up and apologize”). Joe Cabot struggles to remember a name, implying that his criminal instincts are slipping. The movie shuffles its timeline in the vein of The Killing to draw out these contrasts between the characters and to build to a tense and memorable climax, yet had more of the individual character moments been as deftly handled as this first scene, the film might have landed with me more strongly. That being said, there’s a nonzero chance I’ll come back to this in a few years, hoping it will finally click.

Maigo Hanyuu’s Interview with Natalie Music, “Mashou no Kamatoto” Part 1
I’ve been obsessed with “Mashou no Kamtoto” (or as I would translate it, “The Devilish Faux-Naïf”) for like a month. I hope that this interview sheds some light on the characters, setting, and intentions behind this awesome series! Not only am I in love with the Taisho era, but this series made me think a lot about how I conduct myself as an Utaite fan. If you’re not familiar with the series, be sure to check out the songs available on YouTube: Oni no Inu Ma ni, Aza, and Sekai de Ichiban jyanai Anata wo Aishitara. Also, here’s the link to the original interview.
A Tale “Written by the Times”, Spun from Music and Short Story
Maigo Hanyuu, who has gained popularity from the Vocaloid songs “Aun Beats”, “Sange Mairi”, and “Harehareya”, completed a conceptual album, “Mashou no Kamatoto” distinct from his previous works.
This album combines several creation mediums and music, such as Maigo Hanyuu’s self-written short story and Segawa Awoji’s (TN: This looks like the way his name has been romanized in the English fandom, but I’m like 99% sure it should be written like Segawa Aoji instead) hand-drawn music videos, to construct one story. Set in the Taisho era and early Showa era, this story focuses on a young male artist, a faux-naif (TN: This is the best equivalent for “Kamatoto” I could find in English. A few things to point out though is that Kamatoto is usually only applied to women. Kamatoto’s act naive to make men like them more. But also, I’m gonna keep it as Kamatoto for continuity teehee), and depicts various conceived love stories from Anzu, Machiko, and Ringo about this one man. Here at Natalie Music, we interviewed Maigo Hanyuu who has finished his music and short story. What did Maigo Hanyuu wish to convey through his work, “Mashou no Kamatoto”? We approach with that thought.
Series Introduction
It’s backdrop is set from the Taisho era to the early Showa era. Centered on Port Anemone, trade comes and goes and many types of people pass through this flourishing town. The story focuses on a young male artist, the Kamatoto, and three women: Anzu, who yearns for him, Machiko, and Ringo. In the album, the songs align their three various perspectives and thoughts on the Kamatoto. In addition, the short story that comes with the limited edition CD also contains many thoughts that are not voiced in the lyrics.
Characters
The Kamatoto: A young male artist who owns an atelier in Anemone’s shopping district. There are rumors of him in the port town as an elusive, handsome man.
Anzu: A female student who was taken in as a disciple by the Kamtoto to learn how to draw. She holds special feelings for the Kamatoto.
Machiko: The poster-child for the tobacco shop in the shopping district. Everyone loves her because of her carefree personality.
Ringo: The daughter of a large merchant family that controls the shopping district. She works very hard at taking care of people. She lives with the Kamtoto.
Maigo Hanyuu Interview
It was Necessary to have a Short Story Connect the Gaps Between Songs
── ”Mashou no Kamatoto” isn’t just music, but a conceptual work with various expressions via the short story and illustrations. What brought about this conception?
The existence of my previous work, “Ukiyo Meguri”, is a big one. After finishing making “Ukiyo Meguri”, I felt that it was limiting if I only expressed things with sound and lyrics. Of course, there were things that could be expressed by consolidating songs in the form of an album, but I felt that the work I conceptualized and came after “Ukiyo Meguri”, the work called “Mashou no Kamatoto”, needed to be expressed with more than just sound and lyrics. So “Mashou no Kamatoto” first started with creating a backdrop, like an image board, then I made the music and short story.
── Why did it become a short story?
Being based on an image board, I felt that when the world of “Mashou no Kamatoto” took form, that only one part of it’s world would be able to be scooped out if it was just through music. A song is limited to expressing one human’s single timeline. That’s why amongst the existing songs, I tried writing a short story to act as a way to fill the holes in those gaps this time.
── By the way, have you written short stories before this?
This was my first time. It’s not like I was fixated on having it in the form of a short story, but I feel that it was inevitably born. I guess you could say that with this work, it kept coming to mind that I had to do this piece this way, or that this work called “Mashou no Kamatoto” has “a feeling like it was written”. I simply wanted to try to start writing short stories, so writing this was really fun. Of course, it’s also fun to make songs, but starting to write short stories made me more excited, and so I had a feeling that I discovered a new part of myself.
Searching for Worries that Lead to Modern Times
── In the short story’s afterword, you explain that “Mashou no Kamatoto” takes place from the Taisho era to the Showa era. Why did you choose these eras?
A big reason is that I wanted to incorporate more modern components than the Edo period image I had when I made “Ukiyo Meguri”. The Taisho era is when Japan and the west were mixed together, and I think people’s thoughts were also confused. If I set the story in the Edo period, I wouldn’t be able to express this world view and the depths of humanity, so I thought it would be easier if I set it closer to the modern era.
── In the short story’s afterword, you write “the era’s backdrop from these times also come through in modern times”. In what way do you feel that it is similar to modern times?
If I explain it in context, it largely has to do with Japan before it participated in a large war. I imagine that during the war, people worried about human relations and that there wasn’t a lot of room to think about culture and other people. If that’s the case, I think that even while different senses of values were mingling in the Taisho era, that pleasure and entertainment were more prominent than in previous eras. It’s because there was so much pleasure that there were worries, and I think that’s what has come through (TN: or the same) in modern times.
Darkness Seen for an Instant in the Songs
── A big distinguishing factor in your work this time is that you use one vocalist.
In the stages when I decided on the conception of “Mashou no Kamatoto”, using Vocaloid was out of the question. Vocaloid’s good point is that it sounds cold. A cold Vocaloid voice fits with cold music that is based on programming. Vocaloid fit “Ukiyo Meguri”, but I wanted “Mashou no Kamatoto” to be a work that is raw and deeply digs out human emotions. It’s weird, but I felt like “Mashou no Kamatoto” begged me to “find a vocalist to be the ‘narrator’”.
── The vocalist appointed to the role, Nekoyashiki, is a generally unknown vocalist. What drew you to Nekoyashiki?
From the beginning, it didn’t matter if they thought the songs were good or bad, but it was important to be into the role for “Mashou no Kamatoto”. 3 girls star in this work, but what was critical was whether or not they could navigate the girls’ feelings well. When I first heard Nekoyashiki sing, for a moment in her cute voice, something like the darkness of humanity would appear and disappear. I thought that was really good.
── Were there different difficulties in recording with a vocalist, rather than using Vocaloid?
It was hard. It’s because before singing, I would have to explain everything in the situation, such as things about the world, and the many characters’ personalities and mental state. I thought there were parts where it was easier to apply concepts from real love stories, so while listening to Nekoyashiki’s experiences, there were also times when I would send advice like “remember your feelings from that time when you sing”. It was fresh and fun to talk about each work one by one like that.
──  In “Sekai de Ichiban jyanai Anata wo Aishitara” Sou participates as a vocalist. Why did you choose Sou to be the Kamatoto, bearer of everyone’s sentiments?
Because Sou-kun is super popular.
── I see haha.
Sou is liked by a lot of different people so I think there’s some parts of him that are similar to the Kamatoto character. I said earlier that before Nekoyashiki would sing, I would explain a lot of different things to her, but actually when I talked to Sou about this work, I didn’t tell him about the Kamatoto in detail. Without Sou needing to play a role, him singing just like he always does expressed my image of the Kamatoto. When I said this to him, he said, “I’m not this kind of person!” and it seems like he got mad but… haha. I’m truly grateful to Sou for blowing life into the Kamatoto I imagined.

Aikatsu on Parade! Episode 08
Tumblr media
No idols have been injured in the making of this... oh wait.
So, I'm feeling a little weird about this episode so this may be a shorter post.
The episode itself wasn't bad, I actually really enjoyed it. But it suffered from the few flaws from last week. I think the biggest flaw is since Ichigo's performance on her constellation PR didn't occur last week, having Raki be so excited about it here makes it feel rushed. Now, I get that this probably happened since Ichigo has only one solo song that she sings where she wears the Mermaid Pisces coord and having two repeated performances wouldn't be a good move, but then again this wouldn't be a problem if the rule for this show was just one performance per episode rather than the usual three we've been getting, BUT I'M NOT GONNA COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS ANYMORE (who am I trying to fool? I'm gonna talk about this in every episode probably).
Tumblr media
I think when we get passed this detail the episode start to grow a lot. Something I think it's great is that they kept the lore of the constellation dresses and that Raki didn't just draw the coord and got it, she still needed to be acknowledged by a top designer which is something I missed a lot in Stars. We had a little bit of this in Friends with Chiharu and Noah and I hope this means we can see top designers being back in the future of this franchise, you know? Idols who start their own brands are cool but I really miss this "extra element", I think they bring so much more personality to a lot of the brands and it's always good seeing idols having to work their asses off for new dresses rather than just appearing with them.
Tumblr media
Another thing that is great and that kinda relates to the last point I made is that it is great seeing Raki learning things, I love a protagonist that can learn and Raki got very valuable lessons this episode. She didn't just have an intensive training getting experience direct from probably the most important designer from the entire franchise, but she learned from Ichigo to always look straight up and just keep climbing that you'll eventually reach your goals. And Amahane-san, as amazing as she is, tells Raki that it's okay to get inspiration from other people because when creating something of your own is great to have lots of references, which this entire show is about. Yeah, Ichigo's lesson is a bit unrealistic, and she also said that climbing cliffs without equipment is safe and she and Ringo are probably gonna get an idol killed in the future if they continue to push this agenda and don't tell people about the elevator in Angely Mountain, but it was still a great moment.
Tumblr media
Speaking of it, we finally have the show giving the proper explanation of what Raki's real goal is. This should've been cleared up a lot sooner but, at least now I hope people can stop thrashing on Raki getting a PR so soon which means she had already achieved her goal now since they know that's not her final goal. They should be thrashing about breaking tradition and giver her PR on episode 8 instead of 9, THAT is the real travesty here, people. XD
Tumblr media
Since I'm still on this topic I wanna comment on Raki's PR. If you saw my posts when it was revealed for the game you know that I LOVE THIS THING, Ichigo's Pisces PR was never my favorite and now I'm glad my star sign has the constellation PR we deserved. And the show also did a good job on the CG model because it looked great in the performance. They also updated Raki's aura and I'm glad they did that because the golden ribbon didn't look as good as the red one does, I don't remember who I saw on twitter calling Raki's aura THE shining line and, at least to me, now it really resembles the image of the shining line I have on my mind.
Tumblr media
Before I wrap up there are a few things I want to comment on. We had the first moment where characters that share voice actresses happened, of course, it happened with Ichigo and Coco, and of course, it was very funny, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HIBIKI AND ELZA TALKING NOW. Raki has some very cool designs on her sketchbook, whoever make those drawings deserve to be involved with the team for the games, they need some new inspiration. BTW since the constellation system still works, does that mean the Star Wings system also does and Raki will have to get acknowledge to get her wings as well? How will that work? Also, a little bit of controversy here, in the day the episode aired a lot of Japanese fans I follow on twitter where confused because Raki said she's a Pisces like Ichigo when the official website lists her birthday on December, 7th (hey it's the same as my mom's), now in the subs Mezashite has put as Raki saying she wanted her coord to be a Pisces just as Ichigo's and now I don't know what's the truth. (jk, this doesn't matter I just wanted to point that out)
Tumblr media
We left this episode with the girls arriving at Neo Venus Ark and the promise of lots of Ichigo's broken English next week as well as some good Elza, Mizuki, and WM action which got me very excited. We also had a final scene with Raki's sis sounding very shady as she tells us "the world of Aikatsu has finally started to become one", Sakuya has given us a divination before that kinda relates to this and my curiosity has been piqued, I hope it doesn't take long before we know what Raki's sis goals are, will she become an antagonist? Or is she just a mad scientist? Oh my god, I'm loving this so much.
Tumblr media
These were my thoughts on this week's aikatsu episode, let me know what your impressions are and let's keep on talking. I'll see you folks a next time, bye-bi~

May I request a ship with both The Beatles and Queen? my name's Iris, and I'm Italian. I'm 5'8, very thin and my left hand, left arm, knees and feet are covered with several scars due to glass shards. I have gray eyes, curly light brown hair and straight bangs. I love astronomy, drawing, and rock music. my favourite colors are blue and purple. I'm very shy, quiet, anxious and introverted. I hope it's enough! thanks in advance💙✨
Hi Iris, I love your name! We were studying Italy in Geography last year, I really want to tour all the major cities, especially Verona and I really want to go to Pompeii and climb Vesuvius, you have a very beautiful country.
For Queen, I ship you with my lord and saviour, Brian Harold May.
Brian would LOVE your culture.
As we've seen from some of the songs written by him, Brian is very intrigued by different cultures and yours would be no different.
He would definitely write a song with Italian lyrics.
Just like how I fantasize about Bri writing a song for me with Welsh lyrics.
But this has nothing to do with me.
Carrying on...
Brian would remind you that your scars make you who you are and you should be proud of them no matter where they're from because they show that you've been through some shit and survived.
I believe that any scars are battle scars from your own personal battle and they show that you're a warrior.
You and Dr Brian Harold May talking about the stars and sharing facts.
Ughh it would be amazing.
You two would meet at uni or somewhere space related.
For the Beatles, I ship you with Ringo.
You're giving me Ringo vibes, I don't know why, but you are.
There's no reason for it, but I ship you with Ringo.
On paper, you and George would probably be the perfect match but nope, it's Ringo.
Ringo would also be fascinated with Italy as well.
He would make you take him on holiday.
Take me as well.
Ringo would always be asking questions about space.
He would give major heart eyes when you talk about the things you love.
Debates about rock will take place.
Ringo would most definitely be your muse for you art.
Hope you liked those, feel free to request other things as well!

Your name, please? Robyn. Are you heartbroken right now? No, my heart’s doing okay. If so, how long have you been heartbroken? Do you like the area you live in? I like that it’s a lot quieter than the metro, but we get everything we could also get in the city nonetheless. Right now it’s just a little unsettling since the Taal Volcano erupted and we have ashfall land all over our house, but otherwise where we live is pretty decent and uneventful for the most part. Do you ever get complimented on your eyes? What color are they? It’s not my strongest feature so no, not really. They’re dark brown/almost black.
What facial feature do you like the best on a person? Everyone has their different strong suits, so. Do you like to be called baby? Only by my parents and my girlfriend, because otherwise that would be creepy. What is your favorite flower? I like roses, sunflowers, and peonies. Idk, my answers to this question changes every time so it’s safe to say they’re only my favorites today. When did you last use the restroom? Five minutes ago. I went before starting this. How long is your hair? Pretty long. I haven’t had it cut since late in 2018; if I throw my head slightly back it already reaches my hips. I plan to keep it long until my graduation shoot, so I won’t be going to the salon for at least another month. Do you have braces? I used to. Do you have any freckles? Nope. What is your favorite Internet meme? There was a local meme going around last week and it involved people making hilarious puns out of celebrity names and pairing them with Photoshopped pictures of the celebrities to match the pun – for example, a local celeb named Rico Blanco was styled as Rico Blanket and a photo of him was shopped so that he’s in bed wrapped in a blanket :(((( OK IT DOESN’T SOUND FUNNY RN but all the entries were hilarioussssss I swear. Unfortunately everyone hopped on the meme train and it died in like a week. How many windows does your room have? Two big windows but each have four tiny window panes in them that can be opened. Do you have a rug in your room? What color is it? No. My dog likes peeing on rugs so we don’t like having them laying around. What is the weirdest animal you've ever held? I don’t think any animal is weird... but the coolest ones I’ve ever held are a snake, an eagle, a sea turtle, and a crocodile. The first three I got to meet in Bali, and the crocodile was from Palawan. Do you get extremely hyper when under the influence of sugar? No. I never really believed in that either. What about caffeine? I get pretty talkative, yes. I also talk like I have built-in exclamation points lol. Have you ever tried any drugs? If so, did you regret it? No, I haven’t. Do you have any pregnant friends? None of my friends are, but I can never be sure anymore when it comes to people I know. I always say no to this question, then sooner or later someone I know gives birth kfdgkdjfhd like a classmate from high school just had her third kid and no one even had any idea she was pregnant again. Guess I’ll just keep answering this question with a shrug. Have you seen anyone lately that you knew but didn't remember from where? Yeah, this was me for a few seconds when I arrived in my history class for our first day last Friday and I saw several people that I knew I know, but I had to recollect my thoughts. I eventually remembered who they were, but for a few seconds I was stumped. When was the last time you toilet papered or egged someones house? I’ve never done this, because you don’t do this in the Philippines. Do you usually dress up for Halloween? Some years I would. When ordering food, what do you usually get as a drink? I always get ala carte because I only drink water (I get full quicker if I have any other drink), and service water is always there. Put your favorite color and favorite animal. EX: Silver walrus Pink dog. When drawing something, do you try to be super precise or do you not care? I don’t care for drawing and am aware of just how bad I am at it, so I barely make any effort when I have to. When was the last time you snapped at someone? Sunday morning. My mom was playing a mobile game where the character will only be able to move if you scream, so she was screaming her ass off at 7 AM and I was worried it would wake the neighbors up. Does it bug you when people clap with their palms? HAHAHAHAHA like Nicole Kidman? Oh man. I’ve never actually seen someone clap the way she did in real life, so I don’t know if it would bug me. I know it’d send me laughing, though. Have you hugged anyone today? Just my dog. Classes have been suspended because of the Taal erupting, so I’m not seeing anyone else today. How many languages do you know how to say 'happy birthday' in? Filipino, English, Spanish, French, and Korean, so make that five. What language would you like to learn that you don't already know? Korean, just because I watch so many Korean shows as it is lmao. Are you able to take this language at your school? Yes, but it’s not required in my curriculum so I’ve never taken a Korean language elective. Have you ever been into a bar? Yes, I’ve always preferred bars to clubs so I’ve gone to a lot of them. What ethnicity are you? Broadly, Austronesian. But specifically, I’m Filipino, and even more specifically, Tagalog. How much makeup do you wear? None. I usually wear makeup only for special events, or if I absolutely had to, like for my graduation shoot. If you could fly, what kind of wings would you have? I’d like pink sparkly ones please hahahaha. Write some lyrics from the song stuck in your head right now. Nothing’s playing in my head at the moment. Do you like that song? Would you describe yourself as 'fiesty'? You mean feisty? I can bring out that side of me if I have to, but I’m not naturally it. How corny is High School Musical in your opinion? Pretty fucking corny. But I love the series and it’ll always be an important part of my childhood, so I’m never going to hate it. Have you actually read Twilight? Yes. I don’t know how I started getting into it though; I just remember it became insanely popular in the fourth grade and all of a sudden I wanted the Twilight boxed set for Christmas. What about Harry Potter? Yes, I read most of the books. My sister got into HP when she was aroundddd 10-11ish and my parents also got her a boxed set, so I borrowed each book after she finished them. Out of the two, which is better? Twilight.
Name a member of the Beatles! Ringo Starr. Who was the name of your first crush? My first real crush was Andi. How long ago was that? Eleven years ago. Do you still know that person? She migrated to New Zealand nine years ago, so we got disconnected for a long time and that’s when we got cut off. We’re Facebook friends now, but it’s never been the same. Happy for her, though. Can you handle your emotions very well? Usually I can, but when I’m at my breaking point then I’m at my breaking point. How often do you read books? Once every five years :(( JK uhhhhh I read loads, just not from books, and particularly not anything fictional. Are you the jealous type? I can be when there’s reason to, yep. Are you the type of person who gets jealous of people's pasts? No. And usually people regret their past, so I don’t feel jealous about that. Have you ever gotten an ear infection from riding an airplane? No. My ears were incredibly uncomfortable during my first plane ride though, and it didn’t help that I was already panicking long before the flight started. Anyway, my ears never fully ~popped and I was like 80% deaf for the entire plane ride. When was the last time you witnessed someone throw up? The last time someone threw up, it was me lol. But if we’re gonna be strict about the question, it wassssss last April I think. When was the last time YOU threw up? Sometime around May last year. Do you know anyone who faints at the sight of blood? ME. I’m anyone who faints at the sight of blood. Maybe not literally faint but I do feel super nauseous and weak and dizzy and I’d sometimes gag too. Hmm. I wonder how those girls have their period. Yeah well it’s not a very fun 3-4 days for me, my dude. Don't you just love the Cottonelle puppy? I don’t know what that is. Can you do any 'magic' tricks? No. Do you know how to play Checkers? I used to as a kid, because we used to have lots of board games. But since it was the game we barely ever played, I eventually forgot the rules. What clubs are you in at school? I’m in one of the two journalism organizations, and I also joined the graduation committee this year so that I get to contribute something for our batch :) What do you fear most in this world? Either falling from a very high place or drowning. And injections. What do your siblings fear most in this world? I know my sister is afraid of big crowds, chaotic situations, and small spaces. I don’t know what my brother fears, nor do I really care. What was the last sentence you heard anyone say? I’m listening to a mukbang ASMR right now and the last thing the girl said was her basically describing what she’s about to eat. Is Taylor more of a boy's name or a girl's name? I know we’re not supposed to care about this anymore, but if I really had to think about this question I see it as a boy’s name. But I also see that it works on girls just as nicely, so. What about Dylan? Boy’s name. But it sounds so badass on girls, and I prefer it as a girl’s name. What colors are the eyes of your family members? Dark brown/black. Filipinos all look the same, dude. Are you related to anyone with red hair? No. Do you know anyone with super super green eyes? Other than celebrities, no. What color was your hair when you were little? It has always been black. What color is it now? ^ Were you a chubby baby? I was a pretty chubby young kid especially from the ages of 3-5, but I was an okay-sized baby/toddler. I’d be surprised if I was chubby considering my mom and dad are both slim. What is your favorite mythical creature? Not a fan of those. Do you know anyone with a mullet? No, I don’t think so. Put down a random word here. Watermelon. What is your favorite fruit? Avocado. Now what is your favorite flavor of lollipop? Chocolate. If you combine your 2 above answers and make a perfume would it smell good? Probably not. They’re so different. Do you always feel like you have to be the best? Yes. That’s why I always take it hard when I end up not being that. Are you looking forward to summer? Yes, because I’ll get to rest. No, because it will be my last summer until I die. Are you wearing socks right now or are you barefoot? I’m barefoot. Socks always feels like they’re there, and I don’t like that feeling. What's on your favorite necklace? I’m not regularly wearing any necklace these days. How many hours of sleep did you get last night? Around seven, which is okay for me. Which is better: gingerbread or butterscotch? Caramel or peanut butter? Nutella or chocolate? Do you own an iPad? We own a family iPad, but no one’s used it in a while. I was the one who used it last as a means to work and communicate, back when I broke my phone and didn’t have a new laptop yet in my first year of college. I honestly hope that iPad never dies on us, since there’s a load of great memories there. Do you watch Glee? No and as someone who hates song covers, I think I’m better off not watching it skksjfdhgfg. How hard is it for you to get out of bed in the morning? When that day would require me to do something I dread, like attend a class I hate, it will be a lot harder for me to get up. But generally I’m pretty okay, as long as I set my alarm 30 minutes to an hour before I actually have to get up so that I have enough time to properly wake up. How many books are in the current room you're in? I’m in the dining room so there are zero books around. Have you ever witnessed an aircraft break the sound barrier? No. I also never really knew what that means, but I know I’ve never seen that. Do you keep a sketchpad in your room? I don’t draw, so I never needed one. Is there anything you do right before you go to sleep? Put water on my dog’s bowl – he likes drinking before we doze off. What color is your favorite purse? I only use one and it’s pink. How much money is currently in your wallet? ₱2,000. Do you get an allowance? Yes. How many songs are on your iPod? Don’t use an iPod these days. Do you usually have sweet dreams or nightmares? My dreams are either weird or nightmares. I never get any sweet ones. How has the weather been lately? It’s a little gloomy and cloudy. I don’t know if it’s an effect of the volcano eruption nearby, or if the weather is just like this. When was the last earthquake you felt? It was either August or September.

My Favorite Albums of 2019
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we bid adieu to a decade and a year that many of us would like to forget, let’s take the time to run through some albums that deserve to stay in our rotations at least until the onset of the imminent apocalypse. It’s a cliche, and we say it every year, but as bad as 2019 might have been in the real world, it was an excellent year for music. I listened to at least 300 albums this year and found at least 150 that I liked! Here’s the stuff that made me think, made me happy, and made me drop my jaw last year.
Some themes I found in my listening--I really like rap music from L.A. and Detroit; A few artists who I admired more than loved in the past came out with albums that I completely adored; the nebulous genre often called “afrobeats” or “afropop” has the highest hit percentage of any international scene since dub/reggae in the 1970s (the African Heat playlist on Spotify might be my actual album of the year); a lot of my favorite albums this year came from people who are clearly the product of music schools; my top four contains two excellent bedroom pop albums, and two excellent treatises on race relations in the USA.
I made a Spotify playlist with highlights from my albums list: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6S9kSm5xG3U1vPxhVyBpQc?si=0PHLV0-XQOyNY3XAVRzzAA
And in case you missed it, here’s my list of the year’s best songs: https://voodoochili.tumblr.com/post/189890284724/my-favorite-songs-of-2019
THE BEST:
10. glass beach - the first glass beach album - the first glass beach album combines chiptune synths, frayed emo vocals, jazz piano, and suite-like song structure into an exhilaratingly chaotic mishmash. Mix it with a strong dose of theater-kid earnestness and the result is the most ambitious debut album of the year and possibly of the decade, providing a peek into an alternate dimension where Los Campesinos! wrote the La La Land soundtrack. It sounds like it shouldn’t work, and it wouldn’t if glass beach didn’t buttress their boundless invention with well-crafted songs, like “classic j dies and goes to hell part 1,” the suitably bonkers intro, the prog-pop opus “bedroom community,” and “cold weather,” which shifts from ska-punk to math rock and back in 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
9. Jenny Lewis - On The Line - Long one of indie’s pre-eminent songsmiths, Jenny Lewis’s On The Line is her most personal album yet, digging deep into her childhood trauma and emerging out the other side with pearls of cheeky wisdom. Jenny’s lived more lives than most, enduring an entire career as an in-demand child star before ever even picking up a guitar; when she reached her teenage years, she learned most of her earnings fed directly into her mother’s heroin habit. Some songs like “Wasted Youth” and “Little White Dove” confront it directly (“Wasted Youth” takes the form of a conversaqtion between Lewis and her sister about their late mother), while other songs like “On The Line” and “Rabbit Hole” are testaments to the strength Lewis gained after fending for herself for so long. Appropriately for an album so focused on the past, Lewis enlists the help of rock legends like Ringo Starr, Don Was, and Benmont Tench, whose organ lends a lush poignancy throughout the album, and transforms opener “Heads Gonna Roll” from a pretty ballad to a genuine tearjerker.
8. Burna Boy - African Giant - West African music continued its quest for global hegemony in 2019, flooding the airwaves with passionate, uptempo party music. Though it was a massive year for artists like Mr Eazi, Zlatan, and do-everything superstar Wizkid, the year belonged to Burna Boy of Nigeria, his sonorous deep voice lending authority to each extravagant boast. Following up last year’s promising Outside, African Giant unleashes Burna’s full potential, drawing a through-line between Africa’s past and present--his use of multilingual lyrics, outspoken politics, and supernatural sense of rhythm updates the famous formula of Afrobeat founding father Fela Kuti for the new era. Aided by frequent collaborator and unheralded genius Kel-P, whose lush and genre-bending beats perfectly complement Burna’s melodic strengths, African Giant was 2019’s most reliable mood booster, presenting standout singles like the irresistible “Anybody,” the ambitious and easygoing “Dangote,” and the romantic club anthem “Secret,” before taking time to explain the history of colonialism in Nigeria on “Another Story.”
7. The Comet Is Coming - Trust In The Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery/The Afterlife - With a long list of collaborators and an even longer list of influences, London-born saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings’ musical ambitions can’t be confined to a single form or style. While his work with Sons of Kemet emphasizes percussion-heavy Caribbean influences and radical spoken word poetry, Hutchings aims squarely for the stratosphere with his The Comet Is Coming project, which continued its progressive jazz odyssey with two worthy albums in 2019. Elevated by the interplay between Hutchings (calling himself King Shabaka), synth wizard Danalogue, and drummer Betamax, Trust In The Lifeforce of Deep Mystery is a mesmerizing cycle of songs. Boasting titles like “The Universe Wakes Up” and “Super Zodiac,” each song searches for (and finds) a trance-like groove, transporting listeners to the far-flung locales of the song titles before reaching an emotional conclusion. A more contemplative, but still ceaselessly propulsive follow-up, The Afterlife is music for the “stargate” sequence from 2001: A Space Odyssey, providing a more optimistic counterpoint to Trust while refining the trio’s unique group dynamic. Together, the two works make an immensely satisfying head trip, offering a thrilling soundtrack for the end of the universe and whatever comes next.
6. Moodymann - Sinner - “I don’t even know what you need, but I’ll provide,” grunts Moodymann on Sinner’s simmering opener “I’ll Provide,” “Cause I got something for all your dirty nasty needs.” Possibly the most singular and beloved figure in a Detroit electronic scene overflowing with singular and beloved figures, Moodymann is known for sublimely tasteful DJ sets and sprawling solo works that fuse house music with elements of R&B, gospel, blues, and funk. By his standards, Sinner is slight, spanning only 7 tracks and 44 minutes, but it benefits from a tight focus, showcasing Moodymann’s effortless creativity. Throughout the project, the artist born Kenny Dixon approaches familiar elements from odd angles: jazzy changes and burbling Fender Rhodes invade an intoxicating two-chord vamp on “Downtown”; fellow Detroiter Amp Fiddler adds soulful auto-tune to the blissful “Got Me Coming Back Right Now.” He even manages to find a fresh way to incorporate Camille Yarbrough’s “Take Yo’ Praise,” most famously sampled by Fatboy Slim, into one of the album’s hardest-charging tracks.
5. Polo G - Die A Legend - Way back in 2011, long before he became rap’s first Pulitzer Prize winner, Kendrick Lamar took a moment to explain his ethos on the outro to his breakthrough Section.80 tape: “I'm not on the outside looking in/I'm not on the inside looking out/I'm in the dead fucking center, looking around.” It was a bold statement, but one that Kendrick’s managed to live up to, and finally we’ve found another artist with the ability to achieve all-seeing perspective on record: Chicago 20-year-old Polo G.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been blown away by a new rapper like I was by Polo G in 2019. He possesses a rare combination of melodic mastery and writerly observation, painting a vivid (if bleak) picture of his life on the South Side. His debut project Die A Legend is packed with unflinching observations about the reality of his situation, he touches on his former pill addiction on “Battle Cry” and he reminisces about talking to his younger sister through a prison phone on “Through Da Storm.” As dark as the subject matter can get, Polo never crumbles under the pressures of poverty or fame, staying afloat with crisp melodies that mix the emotional honesty of Lil Durk with the radio-ready slickness of Wiz Khalifa. He’s already mastered the art of the rap ballad, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
4. Helado Negro - This Is How You Smile - This Is How You Smile overflows with warmth, inspiring a feeling I don’t often get from music. Listening to it feels like a long-awaited return to a physical place of comfort--a childhood bedroom, perhaps, or a reading nook in a favorite library. Our tour guide is Roberto Carlos Lange, an expert sound designer whose plainspoken, pleasantly nasal voice might be the friendliest sound in music today. The album is comforting, yet unpredictable, with songs that range from synth folk to bedroom pop to ambient field recordings, and feature lyrics that vacillate between English and Spanish. Highlights include the bouncy “Seen My Aura,” calling to mind a collaboration between The Brothers Johnson and Ariel Pink, the sweeping and mesmerizing “Running,” combining trap drums and Budd/Eno piano, and my favorite, the devastating acoustic ballad “Todo lo que me falta.
3. Jamila Woods - LEGACY, LEGACY! - Jamila Woods has a gift for expressing complex intellectual and musical ideas in deceptively simple ways. Her melodies are like nursery rhymes, her lyrics are cutting and conversational, and with LEGACY, LEGACY! she delivers a fiery blend of artistry and activism that rivals peak Gil Scott-Heron. These songs are bold and truthful, tackling heavy subject matter with a delicate touch, commenting on cultural appropriation on “MUDDY” (“They can study my fingers/They can mirror my pose/They can talk your good ear off/On what they think they know”), sexual assault in “SONIA” (“I remember saying no to things that happened anyway/ things that happened/I remember feeling low the mirror took my face away”), and the value of protest on “OCTAVIA” (“It used to be the worst crime to write a line/Our great great greats risked their lives, learned letters fireside/Like a seat on a bus, like heel in a march/Like we holdin' a torch, it's our inheritance”). With songs named after her artistic heroes (a convention that has become a bit trendy, as Rapsody and Sons of Kemet have pulled similar tricks for their recent projects), LEGACY! LEGACY! Is Woods’ audacious attempt to establish herself as an heir to that formidable tradition--one that succeeds without reservation.
2. Raphael Saadiq - Jimmy Lee - A force of nature with one of the most underrated back catalogs in the game (he made hits with Toni, Tony, Tone in the 80s, was a major force behind Neosoul in the 90s and 00s, and produced Solange’s A Seat At The Table in 2015), Raphael Saadiq’s latest is his most powerful effort yet, inspired by the tragic tale of his older brother Jimmy Lee, a heroin addict who died of HIV.  Jimmy Lee tries to find the universal through the personal, taking a deep look into how drug addiction can tear a family apart. Throughout the project, Saadiq approaches his brother’s illness with radical empathy, singing from his perspective on the dangerously alluring “Something Keeps Calling,” and the zonked out “I’m Feeling Love.” He uses his personal tragedy as a springboard to talk about larger issues on the twinkling, self-explanatory “This World Is Drunk,” and the seething spiritual “Rikers Island.” The album veers from style to style, connected with a sound effect that mimics a channel changing on an analog TV, encompassing Prince-like grooves, languid quiet storm, simmering funk in the late Sly Stone mold, and taking detours into hip-hop and traditional gospel. Connecting it all is Saadiq’s raw passion, echoing the pain of everyone who’s lost someone to substance abuse, and singing as if his tenor is the only weapon powerful enough to end the epidemic.
1. Yves Jarvis - The Same But By Different Means - There’s a song on The Same But By Different Means called “Constant Change,” in which Jean-Sebastian Audet layers his voice into a cacophonous symphony and repeats the title phrase for 30 seconds til he reaches an abrupt crescendo. In his first project under the name Yves Jarvis (the 22-year Montreal native used to record under the name Un Blonde), “Constant Change” is his animating philosophy, guiding each second of the most surprising masterpiece of the year. A thrilling and unpredictable effort, The Same But By Different Means overflows with sonic and melodic ideas, shifting and beguiling with unexpected shifts and sounds. The album gets its power from this fluidity--sounds burst into the mix and fade away without notice; songs mutate from one genre to another (traces of freak-folk, tropicalía, funk, and a lot more) within the span of 2 or 3 minutes. It’s a hazy, dream-like collage, at times evoking the likes of Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and Nicolas Jaar; the least expected sound-a-like occurs on “That Don’t Make It So,” which could easily be mistaken for an outtake from D’Angelo’s Voodoo. No hour of music in 2019 was more calming, yet more invigorating than this one--an eclectic and restless monument to Audet’s creativity and an addicting, absorbing soundscape. I listened to hundreds of albums this year, but none of them hit me quite like this one.

Playgirl: Paul! (June, 1982)
(Note: I’ve been wondering if I should include more full articles/interviews on the blog, i.e. pieces that are not already available and/or hosted online. This is one of them - more of an overview/feature piece, but worth a read nonetheless. For Paul and Linda’s 1985 interview w/ Playgirl, I typed it up a while ago here. Previous quote posts from both articles: here, here.)
-
by Mark Rowland
He turns 40 this month, and if he is anything like the rest of us, the last 20 must feel as close as yesterday. Was it really so long ago that four working-class chums from a dingy English port town sang and laughed and shook their mop-tops to signal a crumbling of the old order and a hailing of the new? You look for the signs of age in recent photographs, but the changes are so subtle—a slight hollowing of those cherubic cheeks, perhaps a hint of wariness in eyes that used to sparkle with playful coquetry. Yes, time has been a gentle thief.
The lad who stole girls’ hearts all ’round the world is a husband of 13 years standing, and the father of four. The inveterate rock ’n’ roller divides his time between home and studio, now surfacing to promote a new album (Tug of War, Columbia), soon disappearing back into the mists of his Scotland farm. Which is just as it should be. Paul McCartney, handsome and rich and brimming with easy charm—and still the mirror in which we seek the reflection of our own youthful dreams.
“I like Walt Disney cartoons—they sort of live forever.” Paul McCartney
In fact, the last decade has not treated Paul all that kindly. When it becan he was, quite simply, a hero. By its close he’d become the subject of casual ridicule, a turnabout engineered in part by the mocking comments of his former best friend and musical compatriot, John Lennon. Any critical appraisal of his band, Wings, was bound to include unflattering comparisons to the Beatles and/or snide references to the credentials of its keyboard player, who just happened to be Paul’s wife.
And then there was Wings’ disastrous final episode, a triumphant tour of Japan that abruptly terminated when customs officials unearthed a hefty cache of marijuana in Paul’s luggage. Instead of Budokan’s concert stage, McCartney commenced a 10-day engagement “live” in the local jail, regaling his fellow inmates with renditions of “Yesterday” and “Mull of Kintyre”. Then he was deported.
“He certainly received quite a shock,” recalls Michael McCartney, Paul’s brother and the author of an affectionate family history entitled The Macs (Delilah Communications, Ltd.). “But even worse was the way the media deliberately distorted his situation. When I said I was angry at what was happening, for instance, they made it sound like I was angry at Paul. So just at the crucial moment, when the court is weighing judgment, they read the papers and think, ‘My God, even his own family thinks he’s a fool.’ It could have gone to his detriment, you know. He could have been locked up for years.”
Paul’s problem, of course, is that he has always appeared just a tad too sexy, too suave, too eager to please. His equipoise looms like a red flag to critics ready to knock him down a peg, and no matter that his temperament is genuinely affable. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen him in a bad mood,” contends rockabilly great Carl Perkins, a friend of nearly 20 years standing. “I’ve worked with a lot of greats, from Elvis to Dylan, and they could all get pretty moody at times. But Paul’s not like that. I’m sure he has a time and place, but it doesn’t interfere with his outward personality.” Though McCartney is far from invulnerable, it has never been his style to exorcise personal demons in public, a la John Lennon. Instead, he turns inward, to his family and his music. When the Beatles broke apart, Paul did both—he formed a new band with his wife.
“If you want the Beatles, go see Wings.” George Harrison
“I think I’m good. I like me, I’m good. I can dig me. Can you?” Paul McCartney
“He sounds like Englebert Humperdinck.” John Lennon
Wings took flight in 1971, when Paul and Linda joined forces with old pal Denny Laine (from the Moody Blues) and drummer Danny Seiwell. It endured, in various incarnations, for eight more years and eight more albums. Paul first conceived the band as a vehicle for playing small clubs and halls, a return to his rock roots and an emergence from the isolation that, in Paul’s view, had ultimately destroyed the Beatles. As a traveling show, Wings was a hit from the start—who wouldn’t want to hear Paul play the local pub?—but a succession of pop hits soon propelled him back to superstar-sized arenas and concert halls.
Critical acclaim was not so readily forthcoming. Without the Beatles’ special alchemy Paul’s romanticism tended to drift toward pap, lacking the spark of originality that characterized the best McCartney-Lennon collaborations. His most acrid critic, to Paul’s everlasting chagrin, turned out to be Lennon. For years they squabbled like ex’s unable to leave behind a stormy marriage, but when it came to sarcastic repartee John was in a class by himself. Japes like the one about Humperdinck, or the picture of John hoisting a pig by its ears (a wicked sendup of Paul holding up a sheep on the cover of his Ram album) wounded Paul deeply. He still has not entirely recovered; in a recent interview he claimed to draw fresh solace from his conversations with Yoko Ono. “She tells me something very important,” he revealed, “that John still loved me, after all.”
“Of course my brother and John loved each other,” declares Michael McCartney, “same as my brother and I do. Brothers have their feuds—you love ’em and you hate ’em. Oh, it’s easy enough to put all the negative parts under a microscope. I could have written a book called Paulie Dearest, slagged him to death and made millions. But it wouldn’t have been the truth. With Paul and John, though, all the dirty linen was brought out in public.”
Despite, or perhaps because of, such controversy, Paul continued to pour his energy into the music, and by 1976, his faith had been rewarded. Wings toured America that year like conquering heroes. McCartney was hailed on the cover of Time, and the band’s crack performances drew wildly ecstatic crowds and rave reviews. Amidst all the hoopla, however, Paul and Linda remained serene and jocular, causing one associate to marvel that McCartney was the only touring rock star around who knew how to keep a grip on his sanity.
”Groupies, chicks. It was fabulous. I loved it. There was no stopping me after a (Beatles) show. I was the biggest raver out. But I got to thinking, ‘What am I doing with my life? Who am I getting to know? What one chick do I know as a pal?’ And there weren’t any… Mainly, I’d sown enough wild oats. Making love does become a sort of commitment—I love the idea of vows and stuff. To tell the truth, it keeps me kind of straight.” Paul McCartney, 1974
“I’m not sophisticated, a good conversationalist, looking good all the time. I don’t think of myself like Jacqueline Kennedy or Patricia Nixon.” Linda McCartney, 1974
Paul was always the most desirable of the Beatle bachelors, and by the end of the sixties, he was the only one left. Any whiff of serious romance merited close scrutiny by the press. Thus, Linda “no relation to Kodak” Eastman was in for some rough sport, when, after a relatively swift courtship, she and Paul tied the knot in 1969. A rock photographer at the Fillmore East who’d enjoyed acquaintanceships with various rock figures previous to meeting Paul, she was dubbed the “Park Avenue groupie”—a sobriquet that says more about rock’s inbred sexism than Linda’s character. (Years later, Rolling Stone slurred Joni Mitchell in much the same fashion.)
Nonetheless, Paul and Linda took to the life of domestic bliss with remarkable dispatch, a condition rather smugly documented on their first two records together, Ram and Wild Life. Since then, however, they’ve managed to sustain the ideal of traditional marriage and family—no mean feat in this era of celebrity swapstakes. Though rumors of discord surface from time to time, from all indications, their marriage remains solid. Indeed, one of the highlights of the Wings Over America tour was Paul’s impassioned rendition of “My Love”, crooning the hook “my love does it gooood” while a smiling Linda posed before the multitudes, hands on hips, letting no one miss the implications of that particular song.
“Paul would be sort of a Republican.” John Eastman, Paul’s brother-in-law and business manager
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Paul McCartney is “the most honored man in music.” One is naturally inclined to trust Guinness in these matters, and Paul’s statistics do tell an amazing story—over 100 million album sales, 100 million singles sales and, separately, 43 million-selling songs. Since 1970, all 10 of Paul’s records (solo and with Wings) have been certified gold by the Record Industry Association of America. The last five releases have also gone platinum (over a million units sold), and his newest, Tug of War, which features Ringo, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Carl Perkins, is certain to do the same.
During the sixties, however, only a small part of the Beatles’ fabulous success translated into personal wealth. For many years the band relied on a loose network of acquaintances to handle their financial matters—most proved either honest or competent, but rarely both. But under the guidance of John Eastman, Paul has since realized a vast financial empire, with an estimated annual income, mostly from record and publishing royalties, of about $40 million. His publishing house, MPL, originally established for tax purposes, is the largest independent song publisher in the world, holding the rights to scores from Grease, Annie, Hello Dolly, A Chorus Line, Bye Bye Birdie and Mame; standards from “On, Wisconsin” to “Stormy Weather” and “Autumn Leaves”; the entire catalog of Buddy Holly songs, rags by Scott Joplin, songs by Ira Gershwin, even the theme to the Dinah Shore TV show. And in a recent twist of fate, Paul and Yoko are currently negotiating with British mogul Sir Lew Grade to buy back Northern Songs, the catalog of early Beatles hits (including “Yesterday”) that was sold during the sixties. The whimsical Beatle has turned out to be one savvy entrepreneur.
Less publicized, however, are McCartney’s frequent gestures of charity. He’s performed various benefits for UNESCO, and, in 1979,, following a plea from then-Secretary General of the United Nations Kurt Waldheim, he personally organized a giant pop concert to raise the emergency relief aid for Kampuchea. The event and subsequent album, Concerts for the People of Kampuchea (featuring the Who, Queen, the Pretenders and Elvis Costello, among others), has netted UNICEF over $600,000 to date, according to organization officials. A concert movie will also be released around the United States and Europe this summer.
McCartney’s generosity crops up in smaller, more personal encounters. “When I first decided to become a writer, I sent a bunch of stuff to Paul,” recalls Laura Gross, now a radio interviewer at KRLA, the “Beatles station” of Los Angeles. “Then, when he came to L.A., I knocked on the door of his hotel, and he said ‘Oh yes, I’ve read your stuff, you ought to send us what you’re doing. Linda and I are very interested.’ Here I was, a stranger and a nobody, and he took the time to be kind. He gave me encouragement at a time when that was very important to me.”
“He was my boss,” observes Wings guitarist Laurence Juber, “but he was also my teacher. At one point he gave me a fairly substantial budget just so I could develop my own ideas. He’s an extremely benevolent sort of person, but he doesn’t shout about it. He’s aware of his responsibility to other talents, otherwise he wouldn’t be a nice person, and he is a nice person. Of course, he’s always got that element of cockiness about him, because he’s come such a long way. Don’t forget, he was just a kid off the street in Liverpool. That’s all any of them were.”
“Phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust.” The Clash
“I love Paul, he’s my favourite—brown, white, red, blue or green! He is the Beatles.” Little Richard, interviewed by KRLA’s Laura Gross
In 1974, Mark Lapidos decided to put together a kind of giant swap meet and communal gathering for Beatles fans. He called it Beatlefest, rented a hall, and ended up admitting 7,000 people and turning away thousands more. This year, Beatlefest will span 11 days in four different U.S. cities, as interest continues to mount in a group that called it quits more than a decade ago. “We’re not living in the past,” Lapidos insists. “You take surveys now and ask young people their favourite group and what do they say? The Beatles! Their music will not die. It is the cultural phenomenon of the century.”
Lapidos may be right. The past year has evidenced yet another spate of books and articles about the Beatles, along with discoveries of long-dormant radio recordings and master tapes by the Fab Foursome. And if anything, the hideous murder of John Lennon in December 1980 seems to have inspired fans to rekindle the flame of memory. “We simply couldn’t let that act destroy such an important part of our lives,” explains Lapidos. “Actually, we became more like family, pulling closer together after we’d lost our brother.”
The man who knew John Lennon best was devastated by his murder. Paul’s friend, Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains, remembers seeing McCartney looking “stunned. He said it was useless and tragic, (but) I don’t think it had penetrated that John was gone forever. I’m sure it took a few days for that to sink in.” When it did, Paul turned, as he always did in times of crisis, to his closest ally—music. At the suggestion of friend and producer George Martin, he shifted base from London to Martin’s studio on the Caribbean island of Montserrat, away from the obtrusive glare of the media. Once settled in with Linda and the kids, he called up Ringo, Wingsmate Denny Laine, Carl Perkins, Stevie Wonder, and embarked on the most ambitious and painstaking project of his musical career.
“I have never met a more dedicated musician than Paul McCartney. He’ll work all night on a little guitar lick until he gets it just the way he wants it. He’s a perfectionist.” Carl Perkins
The intensity of his commitment on Montserrat became its own kind of therapy. Between sessions the musicians would swim, sun on the beach, or take Jeep rides along the scenic island trails. But after two months, McCartney and Martin returned to London, where they continued to refine the material for another year. The sessions had produced two albums worth of music; the second set was still in its final stages of completion when I phoned Martin’s studio in March. A spokesperson remarked that McCartney was anxiously awaiting its public reception. “I think Paul wants to have a truly ‘musical’ success this time, not just a popular one,” she declared. “He really wants to be recognized for achieving something.”
In the past decade, McCartney’s most trying periods have often fostered his best work—McCartney and Ram, following the Beatles split; Band on the Run in 1973, when Wings was coming apart at the seams, and to a lesser extent, Back to the Egg in 1979, amidst persistent rumors that Paul and Linda’s marriage was on the rocks. But all of those efforts pale, I think, beside Tug of War. Here Paul has finally cast off the aureole of calculated cuteness that marred so much of his seventies music, and penned lyrics that are evocative, unsentimental and deeply personal. At the same time, the album’s sheer range and spunky, let’s-try-it-on spirit recalls the Beatles at their most ambitious, from the daring juxtaposition of rock ’n’ roll rhythm and big band texture that propels “Ballroom Dancing” to the graceful, quirky country swing duet with Perkins, to the hothouse funk of “What’s That”, a six-minute corker with Stevie Wonder that bears favorable comparison to Wonder’s own “Superstition”. Yet the record’s most eloquent moment is its most elemental—a quiet, heartfelt paean to McCartney’s fallen brother, entitled “Here Today.”
And if I said I really knew you well, What would your answer be? Well, knowing you, You’d probably laugh, And say that we were worlds apart If you were here today… here today.
Every era has its myths—from Jesus to Camelot to the Beatles—and every myth exists to fill the special needs of its culture. As Beatle Paul, he will always play the courtly knight, the crooning Lancelot in shining Nehru jacket. But the real Paul McCartney is no more or less than a talented musician with wife and kids, nearing middle age and trying, along with the rest of us, to sort out the various slings and arows of life’s fortune. It is no put-down to say that nothing he ever does, no matter how accomplished, can again approach the majesty of the legend he once helped create, precisely because it is a legend.
“Why should the Beatles give more?” John Lennon once asked, with characteristic bluntness. “Didn’t they give everything on God’s earth for 10 years? Didn’t they give themselves?”
So now Lennon is gone, though his restless, vibrant spirit survives among the living. And now Paul McCartney, unarguably one of the premier artists of his generation, continues with his own life’s work, which is simply to make music for the world to hear and enjoy; perhaps even be touched by.

My Top Ten Manga:
To go with my top ten anime list.
10. Otaku no Musume-san
Tumblr media
Here we have a manga that is about a girl who's always wanted to meet her father and discovers that he is a shameless otaku. Hijinks and adorable father/daughter affection ensues. There's weird character, cute characters, and a final act that is pretty messed up but this is a manga that I think is good from start to finish. It's a good read. It pulls at the heartstrings while making you laugh and it can even serve as a do/do not guide for all you otaku parents out there. XD
Favorite character: Kannau Yukimura
9. Air Gear
Tumblr media
This beautiful and heavily detailed stylish manga is about a world where skate-like contraptions known as Air Treks are used as a way to fly, get places, and build your own gang to own the skies. The art is gorgeous, the characters all mesh into a kind of gray area although there are some typical good guy/bad guys thrown in, and the series manages to evoke true feeling from the reader with how raw it can get. I highly reccomend. Favorite Character: Ringo Noyamano
8. InuYasha
Tumblr media
The manga that cemented my love for all things anime Inuyasha is the compelling fantasy tale of a half-demon and a young junior high girl. I can't express into words what an impact this manga made on me. The designs of the assortment of demons that are based on Japanese folklore and mythology, the tragic backstories so many of the main characters possess, the out of this world fight scenes, all the way to the incredible chemistry between Inuyasha and Kagome. It's hard to put down once you've started reading. The manga outshines the anime because it doesn't quite feel like it loses its pacing as the anime kept getting dotted with filler. It's interesting, dark in some places but never without a ray of light, and artwork that suits the story well. Favorite Character: Rin
7. Gunsmith Cats
Tumblr media
An oldie but goodie. We've got guns, muscle cars, and hot chicks, all in above average detail. Don't waste time with the anime, the manga is where this story of bounty hunter/police officer Rally Vincent and her partner Minnie-May really shines with explosive fun. Mature and loaded with everything from kidnapping to drugs to high speed car chases I have to say that I make it a point of rereading this series often. I've yet to find another that I enjoy as much as this one for this particular genre. Favorite Character: Rally Vincent.
6. Buso Renkin
Tumblr media
I'm a big fan of manga that doesn't force a simple storyline to be stretched over fifty volumes. Ten volumes was the perfect size for the story of Katsuki Mutou as he is accidently thrown into the world of alchemy and humunculous. This is a complete manga by the creator of Rurouni Kenshin that I think really emphasizes Watsuki's strength as a shounen manga author who can take so many shounen tropes and make them work almost effortlessly. It didn't need to be ground breaking because it wasn't trying to be. It's an honestly good manga from start to finish with one of the most memorable anti-hero's I've ever read. Favorite Character: Papillon
5. My Little Monster
Tumblr media
I'm not the biggest shoujo manga fan like I used to be but I will say that My Little Monster is a great way to change the formula. None of the characters acted the way I expected. They are all weird and extreme in the most interesting of ways while still capturing the uncertainty and naivete that teens suffer from. It's really difficult to dislike any of the characters. They're all so likeable although Natsume will probably make you grind your teeth because that girl is insane. A must read for any shoujo manga fan. Favorite Character: Sohei Sasahara.
4. Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden
Tumblr media
I like shoujo manga that doesn't just focus on romance. Genbu Kaiden is the prequel to Fushigi Yugi and I have to say it's better in every way. It's a lot more balanced, mixing the romance into a beautiful but sad story, unforgettable characters, action scenes that really emphasis the importance of the plot, while all being accomplished with the ridiculously gorgeous Yu Watase art style. Another must read for any shoujo fan. Favorite Character: Takiko Okuda
3. Rurouni Kenshin
Tumblr media
There was no way this manga wasn't going to make the list. Unlike the anime this manga is outstanding from start to finish. For me this is the ultimate in sword fighting. The visuals are exactly what you want from samurai dueling and there's never a dull moment. The cast is one of the best in my opinion and I love that the narrative never bores me even when they're just explaining fighting styles or attacks. Watsuki's distinct shounen style is a favorite of mine. The evolution of Himura Kenshin is the plot and its worth every panel. Read the final arc of you can. It's amazing.. Favorite Character: Kamiya Kaoru
2. Chrono Crusade
Tumblr media
I will make a rant about this manga later because I will fight for this series until the day I die. Do no watch the anime. Even though I bought each dvd and have watched them over twenty times at least, the anime does the manga NO justice. Eight volumes, all inspiring story telling. Chrono Crusade starts in such a way that you think it may be a lighthearted story of a gun-toting 'nun' and her demon sidekick but it quickly evolves into so much more. Rosette and Chrono are a duo the you will root for from page one as they fight demons, friends, and everything else that stands in their way to fix the damage that was done so many years ago. Another series that accomplishes a complete story in ten volumes or less which keeps the plot from being unnecessarily stretched. It evokes so much feeling, making you relate to the characters in such a way while still powering through the story because this is a tale about time. By the end you'll find yourself a little less able to take your time for granted as you cry for these characters that have an ending that you can take as either good or bad. I always put this one at the top of my must read list and it holds a very special place in my otaku heart. I'm disappointed that such an intense manga did not get a proper anime adaption though I do understand why. Favorite Character: Chrono
1. Detective Conan
Tumblr media
Anyone who knows me should have expected this. Lol. Detective Conan for me is the ultimate manga. The award winning mystery series is an ongoing manga that never fails to impress. It's familiar while evolving with us so it has a loyal fanbase made up of twenty year veteran fans to new ones every day and the number just keeps growing. High school detective Kudo Shinichi is the pride of Tokyo Japan before he stumbles across a mysterious transaction involving a pair of men clothed in black. He's discovered and force fed a drug that instead of killing him, reverts his body to that of a seven year old. He retains his adult mind and begins hiding his identity while going by the name Edogawa Conan and solving mysteries through his childhood friend's father's detective agency. The story takes off from there. The series is vast, featuring over 1000 chapters, over 20 movies, over 50 seasons, dozens of OVA's and specials including live action, and being featured in multiple ways throughout Japan. It even has its own museum in Gosho Aoyama's hometown. While not for everyone, especially those thrown off by the sheer amount of content, Detective Conan is a series that is loved by all ages all over the world and has been here since the early 90's for a reason. It has become my reason for living and it will never leave my #1 spot. Favorite Character: Kudo Shinichi (for life!)
As I have said before I gauge a series on its ability to draw me in, keep me attached, and talent for making me come back.

Fears of loss 2/3
Next Chapter translated!
Part 1
Summery: Easy had an accident, Ringo is confronted with the fear of loosing him, Ringsy Angst & Fluff
You can also read this on AO3. Have fun!
Finally a nurse entered the waiting room, the three look at her hopeful.
"Mr. Beckmann?" the nurse loudly asked.  Ringo leaped to his feet. "That's me! How is Easy... I mean Mr. Winter?" , he immediately asked. "I am not allowed to give you information about his condition, since you are not related. But Mr. Winter wants to see you, then you can ask him yourself." , the nurse answered with a smile. When Ringo realized what the nurse just said, he felt a wave of relief wash over him. "So that means he is awake? I can talk to him?" he asked excited. "Of course. He is in ward 3, room 307," "Thank you." , Ringo said quickly and headed to the elevator. Tobias and Elli followed him.
Ringo couldn't wait to get to his boyfriend. He had to see him, to feel him. He had to make sure he really hadn't lost him. Without knocking he slamed the door of open and rushed into the room. Luckily Easy was alone in the room, sitting upright in the hospital bed. First he startled when he suddenly heard the door slaming, but when he saw his boyfriend his eyes lit up and he smiled.
Easy!" , Ringo sighed in relief. Immediately he rushed to his side and pulled him in a crushing hug. "Ouch... slow down." Easy groaned. "Oh Sorry, I didn't want to hurt you." , Ringo said insecurely and let go of him. "It's okay." , Easy said and pulls his boyfriend closer again, but this time a lot more careful. "I was so worried about you." , Ringo admitted. "When you lied there on the street.... and then fell unconscious.... I thought I'd freak out. The thought of being without you..." Tears welled up in Ringos eyes again.
"Hey." , Easy said softly and took Ringos head in his hands. "Don't cry." , he wiped a tear of Ringos face, caressing his cheek. "I am here, everything is okay." he tried to calm down his boyfriend. "I was so scared about you." , Ringo said with a broken voice. "Come here." Easy pulled his boyfriend in an other hug, stroked his back soothingly. The two seemed to not plan to let go of each other anytime soon, but Tobias and Elli - who were still standing in the door frame, feeling slightly out of place - cleared their throats.
"Guys, I don't want to interrupt you, but I'd really like to know how my best friend is feeling?" , Tobias said. The pair let go of each other. Ringo sat on the edge of the bed and interwined his hand with Easys. "Yeah, how are you? What did the doctor say?" Ringo now also asked. "So far everything is okay, just a few bruises and a mild concussion, what was probably the reason for my unconsciousness. The doctor said I was very lucky the car didn't hit me head-on." , Easy answered.
Elli, Tobias and Ringo were relieved. "And how long will you have to stay here?" , Ringo asked. "The doctor said, when nothing conspicuous will happen tonight and my values will be normal, I can already get out of here tommorrow." , Easy smiled, he was already looking forward to being home in his own bed again, preferably together with Ringo.
"Do you need anything for tonight?" Clothes? Should I go and get a few things for you?" , Elli asked. "Well, a few fresh clothes would be really nice." , Easy responded. "Okay. I'll be right on my way." , Elli said. "Tobias, will you come with me?" , she asked and gave Tobias a suggestive look. "Hmm... Yeah, I'll come with you. I am glad you are okay." Tobias said and huged Easy. "We'll see each other tomorrow, I guess." , he said, before he left the room with Elli, so the couple could have some alone time until Elli comes back with Easys stuff.
After Tobias and Elli left, Ringo snuggled even closer to Easy. No matter how close he'll be to him, today it would never be enough. Easy tenderly strokes his boyfriends hair. "You look totally strung out, almost worse than me and I got hit by a car." , Easy said half jokingly, half worried, when he noticed Ringos paleness and the dark circles under his puffy eyes. "I totally paniced." , Ringo admitted. "Easy I... I never want to loose you." , he said visibly emotional. "You won't. I am here and I'll stay with you. You won't get rid of me so fast." , Easy smiled and kissed his boyfriends forehead.
"I love you." , Ringo said and looked at Easy, all his fear, his relief and his love reflected in his eyes and Easy couldn't think of anything else than drawing his boyfriend closer. "I love you, too." , he responded and carefully placed his lips on Ringos. Ringo kissed Easy back with all he had, putting every emotion in this one kiss. When they let go of each other after a while they were both breathing heavily.
"I'll never let go of you again." , Ringo said and wraped his arms around Easy. "Is that so? Then come here you cuddler." , Easy laughed. He moved over a bit, and lifted the covers, so Ringo could crawl into bed with him. Carefully to not hurt his boyfriend, Ringo rested his head on Easys chest and put an arm around him. "Is this okay?" , he asked. "Perfect." , Easy smiled and snuggled closer to his boyfriend. Ringo sighed in relief, slowly all the tention disappeared, he felt like he finally could breath again. Easy also noticed, that his boyfriend was relaxing a bit and was relieved. After that shock both enjoyed being in each others arms, more than ever.
When Elli came back with a bag for Easy, she had to smile, when she saw the two cuddled up like that. "Hey. I have your clothes." , she broke the silence in the room. "Thank you." , Easy said. Elli placed the bag next to Easys bed and gave him a fresh Shirt. Ringo unwillingly let go of Easy, so he could change.
Shortly after, a nurse entered the room. "I have to ask you to leave. Mr. Winter needs rest and it's late, visiting time is long over. If everything will go as planned, you already can go home again tomorrow." , she said kindly. "Okay, we will be gone in a minute." , Elli answered. Ringo didn't look very pleased, though. "But I want to stay with you." , he said quietly. "I'd like you to stay, too. But I guess we'll get in trouble then." , Easy said. "Besides I'll be out of here very soon." , he tried to sooth his boyfriend.
Ringo sighed and reluctantly said goodbye to his boyfriend. "I love you. See you tomorrow." , he said and kissed Easy, pulled him in an other long embrace. Elli also said goodbye to Easy and eventually pulled Ringo, with the words: "Come on, you'll see him again tomorrow." ,  out of the room.
Easy smiled, when he glanced after them. He found it very cute how Ringo only unwillingly left him alone. For Ringo this night must have been a real shock, while it didn't even occur that bad to Easy. But he didn't have to watch his boyfriend getting hit by a car and falling unconscious, though. He sighed and lied down, he missed Ringo already. But he'll see him tomorrow again and at least the painkillers he got, were making him pretty tired after all. Ringo on his mind, he fell asleep.
Meanwhile Ringo is on his way home with Elli. Elli repeatedly glanced at him with a small smile. "What?" , Ringo asked eventually. "Oh Nothing. I just find it nice how you've changed. I have to admit that I am a little proud of you." , she said. "Hmm" Ringo didn't really know what to say to this.
Later Ringo was lying in his bed, he couldn't sleep and he hated to sleep without Easy. The pictures of the accident came to his mind again and again. Easy, how he got flung on the street. Easy, when he fell uncounscious and he could only helplessly watch. He opened his eyes again and looked at his phone, 12:34 am. Sighing he got up and quickly put on a shirt and sweatpants and sneaked over to the other flatshare. If he couldn't sleep with Easy, he could at least sleep in his bed, at least this way he'll feel a little bit closer to him.
When he entered the apartment, he surprisingly saw that the lights were still on and noticed Tobias, who was sitting on the couch with a beer in his hands. "You can't sleep either, can you?" , Tobias asked with a sigh. Ringo shook his head. "Come on, sit down." , he said. "Do you want a beer?" Ringo shook his head again but sat down on the couch. Both were sitting next to each other in silence for a while. "If you... you know... want to talk about it..." , Tobias offered. Ringo looked at him, thinking about if he'd want to talk, if he could even put his feelings in words.
"God, Tobias I was so fucking scared about him." he finally came out with it. "That was impossible to overlook." , Tobias answered. "But luckly everything has gone well. Easy is okay, he'll be completely fine soon." , he tried to reassure his brother. "Hmm" Again silence between the brothers. Talking openly with each other was still not their strong suit. "Tobias?" , Ringo asked quietly after a while. "Thank you." "No problem, brother." Tobias answered with a smile. He notied that Ringo is probably too exhausted to talk much. "Maybe you should try to sleep now, you look pretty exhausted." he recommended. "Yeah I really am." , Ringo admitted and got up.
Insecurely he looked at the door and then in direction of Easys room. He didn't want to admit in front of his brother, that he'd rather sleep in Easys bed, especially when and because Easy is not around. Richard Beckmann had still an image to loose, even though that image had began to crumble down the past month.
"Oh come on. Go in his room already. That's why you came here in the first place, didn't you?" , Tobias grined. Ringo looked at him surprised, blushing a little, but then without an other word he went to Easys room. He was too tired, to ask his brother how the hell he did know that. He fell on Easys bed, took in the familiar scent of Easy and finally could fall asleep.
I hope you liked it! Part 3 coming soon!

Remembering that this was written during the long, agonizing breakup of the Beatles, it’s not hard to see where it’d fit into the group of songs George used to express his frustration and sorrow. If “Wah-Wah” is the headache the band was giving him and “Run Of the Mill” relates to the arguments they were all having, then it’s possible that “Isn’t It a Pity?” is George talking to Paul.
Isn't it a pity, Now, isn't it a shame How we break each other's hearts And cause each other pain? How we take each other's love Without thinking anymore. Forgetting to give back, Isn't it a pity.
George and Paul had the oldest relationship in the band, going back to before Paul met John. They had never been BEST friends - George had Arthur and Paul had Ivan, then John - but they had bonded over scribbled drawings of guitars so long before The Beatles that neither one could remember exactly how old they were when they did meet.
Paul was, in a sense, taking George’s love through the music they made on the last two albums. We’ve all seen the hushed disagreement they had over the guitar solo in the agonizing “Let it Be” movie, we heard the pain in George’s voice when he told Paul, “I'll play, you know, whatever you want me to play. Or I won't play at all if you don't want me to play, you know. Whatever it is that'll please you, I'll do it.” But Paul was in a world of his own hurt and didn’t hear the plea, didn’t give anything back. Isn’t it a pity?
Some things take so long, But how do I explain When not too many people Can see we're all the same? And because of all their tears Their eyes can't hope to see The beauty that surrounds them. Isn't it a pity?
Not too many people could have understood what it was like to go from post-war Liverpool teenagers to the heights of fame, with all the joys but also the myriad tribulations. Even though Paul had grown his Beard of Sorrow and was mourning the impending loss of his partnership with John, George still recognized him, still knew that underneath it all it was still the same Paul who’d taken hitchhiking trips with him...all those years ago. Paul couldn’t see the good things that stretched before him in his life because he was too focused on what he was losing. Isn’t it a pity?
Then George repeats himself and the song fades out on the same repetition of the title that Paul used in “Hey Jude.” George never did things by accident, so it’s my opinion that he chose the long, chanting fade-out as a reminder to Paul that he could take his sad song and make it better.
I don’t think it was an accident that Clapton put this song in the setlist on the Concert for George and gave it to Billy Preston to sing before either Ringo or Paul was onstage. Billy had been present during the darkest days of the band and he knew what was going on around him. I can only imagine Paul and Ringo backstage and listening to the words, really LISTENING to them.
Now, isn’t it a pity?

TALKTIMELIVE.COM EXCLUSIVE with YEO: by Daxavier Josiah
37 years game developer Vadim Gilyazetdinov from Moscow, Russia, goes by the name “YEO”, which is a nickname he came up with in his school days while achieving a high score in a racing game. The name also pays homage to his appreciation and fandom for the Japanese culture.
YEO has a passion and ambition to bring his narrative to life in the form of his favorite fandom which is video games. This led YEO (and his team) to create one of the most compelling retro 2D open world games out now for STEAM and recently Nintendo Switch called “The friends of RINGO ISHIKAWA.” which has received much praise by fans and media. I had the opportunity of talking with YEO about the creation of this title and more more.
DAX: Where did your journey begin as a game developer?
YEO: I wanted to be connected with game development since University (I have a master’s degree in chemistry) but I didn’t know how to code and I couldn’t draw (I believed that I was good at writing dialogues though) so I applied to some Russian game development companies for any minor junior role they had but they just ignored me. It was no wonder since I hadn’t any work experience.
I started to work at some government company and in 2006 I was introduced to Game Maker 6.1 by my colleague and close friend with whom we run first Russian Nekketsu fan-site. And I made some beat-em-up action with Kunio-Kun sprites in a week ) And it was like whole new world opened for me )
But I never thought that I could do commercial games. I was just having fun with Nekketsu of Mighty Final Fight sprites. I made some small games with them for my local web friends and for myself and most importantly for the process of doing it. Since I don’t believe in result too much, you could achieve it or not, but the process is what you got anyway, so if it was fun and interesting that’s more than enough.
DAX: How many people did it take to develop this game as well as how long did it take to develop it?
YEO: The Steam made possible for small developers to be introduced to the large audience. And when my fellow developer passed Greenlight and then successfully released a game in 2015 I started to think of doing the same. I had quite good and stable job as a team leader at the Moscow IT Government Department so I could afford to hire an artist at last. I never thought of it before though, that you can just hire somebody.
So, I started to look for an artist. Prototype of the game was ready. All these years I tried different battle mechanics with Nekketsu sprites, and literally honed my skills little by little. You can see how Ringo looked back then:
youtube
I posted some job description on game dev forums and it started (“your game is shit”, “you’re a moron” “you’re paying too low” “you should better be doing some Russian aesthetics”, “it’s a dumb clone”, “nobody could do 60 backgrounds alone”, “you should hire a team”) It really was hard to get by. I read all these insults and recommendations for 2-3 months and then suddenly one man sent me a really beautiful background and I thought “no kidding? It could be a BG for my game?” That’s how we started to work with Artem “Wedmak2” Belov, a man who made my game even possible.
Then I had to recruit a characters artist. And it was another 2 months of hell. And I almost lost hope already. I asked every real live person I knew who could draw a straight line besides web searching and all my friends refused. I even asked my 58 years old father and he opened some image redactor, looked at pixels, closed and said no.
I was walking with my mother one day and she asked about the game, how the things going, and I said “mom, I can’t find an artist, please, talk to dad, he doesn’t work, he has nothing to do, maybe he can try again, it’s not that hard” and she said, “I’ll see what I can do”. I must say that my father is no artist. But he’s very talented in different areas so I believed that he could handle it if he wanted to. And couple of days later I installed him the graphics gale and taught him how to choose colors and place dots. And little by little, step by step, he drew around 1000 frames for Ringo in next 2 years.
Tumblr media
I tried to work with musicians also but we couldn’t get along. First musicians wrote 3 tracks that I love though, and they wrote final theme among then (the best track in the game), the band named “indian&fox”, very talented guys, it’s sad that they couldn’t do whole soundtrack. So, in the end, Royalty Free Tracks saved me. It was really months of listening and choosing tracks and it was really time-consuming (I was doing it at night usually when I was too tired to code) but I’m proud of the result. I also don’t care about them been royalty free. Almost any Tarantino’s soundtrack is Royalty Free.
And it was guys who did translations but it could be too long to tell about them. I want to mention Dmitry Ostrozhskiy above all who did English translation. And also Guillaume Veer, and Indienova team for Chinese localization and Misa Sekiguchi Webb, Ueda M. and Chie Koizumi for Japanese. If I started to name one I can’t forget others.
And, I had 2 web friends who discussed with me everything and gave their opinions and insights all these years. I consider them as a team. stray_stoat and Mr.Chelnoque. They were there for me anytime I needed them. And while they didn’t actually write dialogues or code or something like that’s a core of my team. It’s really hard to go such distance on your own. Only some hardcore guys like Eric Barone is capable of that.
So I was doing Ringo and when I was watching some movies like “La-La Land” or “Joy” or any other dream related stuff I couldn’t look in their eyes cause they asked me “all right you had a dream and you found out what you really love and you’re good at it but have you done everything you could? Did you give it all? Did you risk any?” And I couldn’t say “yes” to any of them. But it’s the life without regrets that give you real freedom.
When I said to my wife that I had to quit the job she wasn’t really happy about it. But she said “Do what you gotta do. We’ll manage somehow.” I didn’t have to quit my job to release the game. I could easily release it while still working; I had a lot of free time there. But I was a casino gambler in my youth days so I knew that you need to bet something if you want to win any. And you better risk high if you want a jackpot). So my career was the only thing I could bet actually.
DAX: The friends of Ringo Ishikawa is a very ambitious and free-thinking experience with no rules and direction. Can you talk about what led to this form of gameplay?
I usually reflect on everything I do so when I reflected on my gaming experience I noticed that I don’t play to win a game. I play to live in a game. I played it like this since ZX Spectrum’s Saboteur for example
I never passed 3 first screens in the game since it was awfully controlled and dogs killed you by touching but you could be a ninja in it. In the first scene a ninja sails on the boat, then he enters some building and then dogs and enemies appear). But I was pretending that I was a wounded ninja who’s going to a suicide mission. And I was sailing in the boat like in a movie. So I was walking fearlessly and dying like a warrior.
And I played almost any game like that. And on NES my favorites was Technos Japan’s Nekketsu series. All of them, but especially Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari (River City Ransom) and Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu. You could live there. It was like early GTA game. Free roam/open city, usual daily activities. You couldn’t die also.
And you had all other Nekketsu games as a part of one big Universe. So you could live in DNM, then switch to Ike Ike and play some hockey, then go fighting in NKD. I wished there was one big Nekketsu game where you could live and participate in different activities without changing cartridges. And I was designing one on the paper when I was at University. Just for fun. Just for “what if I could do a game someday”. And I wrote to notebook “You can smoke by pressing a button”. It was 2002 or 2004.
DAX: This has the definite essence of the classic 8-Bit series RIVER CITY RANSOM. Where there any other games that you were inspired by in the making of this title?
Tumblr media
Beside Technos games I was heavily inspired by Shenmue of course. That was another game of my dream. Martial Arts, Japan, snow flying right in the face.
Another obvious inspiration is Persona games, especially 3rd one. I didn’t like Tartarus part (though JRPG is my favorite genre) but the school part was perfect.
My personal best (is) Final Fantasy 7. I believe it’s a perfect game and it inspires me every time I even think of it. You won’t see exact influences from it, but it’s there. For example, you could buy a villa later in the game (FF7). And by the time you could buy it you actually don’t need it. But it was something special when you just entered (the) menu and it said “Cloud’s Villa” in location’s name. Or you could hit a heavy bag in the basement. It didn’t do anything. You just could hit it. And that’s all.
DAX: Where there any coming of age/gang related movies, anime, or manga that inspired the creation of this game as well or maybe some past experiences growing up?
YEO: I think that everything you have seen and read and played is inspiring you and forming your sense of style and aesthetics. I was a delinquent myself, and a gambler addict, I used to box and kickbox and I’m still training, actually almost all Ringo movements are redrawn (not rotoscoped) by my father from my photos. So I wanted to share some personal feelings with players and I knew what I was talking about hard way. So I wasn’t look up to any manga or a movie actually. But I read and watched a lot, and I gave homage to some of my favorite works, Ringo can read some of my favorite books in the game.
Between youth gang movies my personal best is Korean “Once upon a time in high school”. That’s a real masterpiece, real masculine movie. I was aiming at this level of quality but I didn’t reach it. This movie is on another level. I hope that Ringo can still be compared to it.
DAX: You are obviously a fan of retro games, what were some of your favorites growing up?
YEO: I’m still playing retro games actually. I don’t really like new games and I hadn’t completed a game in 5 or 6 years. Last game that blew my mind was Way of Samurai 3. It’s a really awesome game. I didn’t like 4th game in the series and didn’t play first ones. But this game is something else. I also played a lot of EA Fight Night series, all of them are good and it’s a pity they abandoned the franchise. That’s my favorite “next-gen” games.
I like many PS one games, mostly JRPG: FF7, FF8, Xenogears, Wild Arms etc. There was some interesting CAPCOM beat'em up on PS2 I can recommend: Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance and Shinobido Imashime of course.
For real retro games, I still play first Streets of Rage from time to time, I beat it 3 or 4 times some weeks ago on Switch. My favorite straight beat'em up is Mighty Final Fight on NES though. I really love this game, it’s a gem. Also, I like Bucky O'Hare, Mitsumi ga Tooru, Double Dragon 2, Duck Tales. That’s my favorite on NES. Beside Nekketsu of course.
DAX: There are multiple ways to play “The friends of Ishikawa.” Is there one true way to play this game or did you have the idea of letting the player go to any direction they want and have different results?
Tumblr media
I’m really tired of modern games that take you by the hand. If there’s a mini-map in a game you don’t look at the backgrounds, you play it on the minimap, so any game comes down to some white triangle moves to green circle which activates a cut scene, richly animated and directed, voiced over, cinema-like. Then you gain control over the character again and go to another green circle, sometimes you mash buttons between. I drop games like that in half an hour regardless the quality and graphics and wrinkles on the face when chars do smile.
I also tired of tutorial messages on any action. So I made only the basic ones in my game. So it’s easy to pick up like older games where any tutorials weren’t and there were 2-3 action buttons and you just tried everything. And I think its fun. It’s a kind of exploration. You try different things and see outcome and you investigate and when you discover something you really enjoy it and you feel smart and by doing it you (are) starting to feel connected to a character.
We argued about all this with mr.chelnoque and stray_stoat but I believed in my vision and positive reviews proved my point. I knew that there’d be many players disappointed that the game doesn’t give you any direction and you don’t know what to do etc. But I also knew that some players would love it for the same reason. And that goes for multiple endings as well. I considered different endings of course and at some point, it was even “A friend of Ringo Ishikawa” so you had to generate your character who was Ringo’s best friend from childhood and you could more role-play in the game, it was a date-sim part also. But then I decided to tell this exact story about this exact character with the exact ending. So some things just fell off. It’s not in Ringo’s character to have multiple girlfriends for example, so I gave up on the dating sim. And there were more sacrifices I had to do.
As for the right way to play it, on the contrary, I wanted players to play their own but to stay in a character. That’s why you can’t rob your classmates, for example, and you still have to fight in some scenes cause Ringo is a gang leader, after all, you can’t turn him into a complete nerd.
The whole game came from one final scene and I designed it backwards actually, I wanted players to really feel that very scene. I don’t want to spoil it though for those who didn’t complete the game. So I wanted payers to live in the game and to feel the ending if they care to complete it.
DAX: What’s next for you? Is there any chance we will see a sequel following The Life of RINGO?
Tumblr media
YEO: I’d rather not do it and I have some reasons for it.
First of all, I’ve said what I wanted with this game. I also wanted to make a game with a generated character where you could really do what you want and have different endings (like Way of Samurai for example) but if I expand Ringo’s Universe his story could fade. And I don’t want to sacrifice it.
Secondly, it’s really common to make a sequel to a well-received game. And while it’s easy it could turn into creative chains, I want to be free. That’s why I quit my job also. To do what I want to and not what is best for business or others.
That’s why my second game will be quite short also. I understand that some players have great expectations of my games but it also can drain creativity, fear of failure. So again I decided on what to do next just by listening to myself. "What kind of game you want to do now? What inspires you?” And when I captured setting and gameplay it turned out that I can’t do a long game with it. But gameplay is really good and I have one interesting idea also, and some thoughts I want to share. So I decided on what could be good for this idea to be properly told.
I want to try to stay creatively free for as long as I can.
I almost ready with this game, but Artem Belov (who’s in charge of BG again and he’s doing astounding work again, even better than in Ringo), he got married and got an office job so he (has a) lack of time now, and he draws slowly. And while I’m waiting for him I started to work on another project but it’s a secret for now.
Tumblr media
Thanks to YEO for taking the time to chat with me on such a great game. Be sure to check out “The friends of RINGO ISHIKAWA” available now on STEAM and Nintendo Switch (and Nintendo E-Shop).

Here goes: Love: Pie and Retasu: This is my OTP. I relate a lot to Retasu, and Pie is basically my dream man (personality-wise). It only seems natural for me to ship them. Besides that, I could rant on and on about how they are perfect for each other. XD ... Ryou and Minto: It is underrated, but I have fallen in love with this ship. It is so precious to me! Someone come ship it with me please! ... Masaya and Ringo: It may seem odd, but I think it would be cute for how I view their personalities. It also matches my color-coordinated ships (which are: green and purple, red and blue, green and blue, white and black, black and blue, white and blue, purple and pink, and blue and pink) ... Like: Masaya and Ichigo: I think that in the long run, it might not work out, but, at the moment, it is so cute! The way they fight for each other kills me inside. I love them so much! ... Quiche and Minto: Okay, I admit, it makes sense. Minto is the only girl (besides Ichigo) I let have more than one ship for. The mixture of these two reminds me of Jessie and James lol ... Pie and Minto: Again, makes sense. I like to tease this ship because I headcanon Minto to be really smart (in secret). This is the only other ship I am okay with that interferes with my OTP. ... Tart and Bu-ling: Need I explain? They are too cute! ... Keiichirou and Zakuro: I do like this one a lot, but I usually keep this ship to myself (as in, I do not write fanfiction about them or draw them). ... Tasuku and Raspberry (Berry): They grew on me when I read the manga. Tasuku reminds me of my youngest brother. Raspberry's personality is perfect for Tasuku, honestly. ... Love/Hate: Quiche and Ichigo: I actually adore this couple. I like it a tiny bit more than Masaya and Ichigo. What bothers me is that Quiche gets all the love in the fandom, when he started out a terrible person. He disrespected Ichigo several times, and even tried to kill. Ichigo had made it clear that she liked Masaya, but Quiche didn't listen. That annoys me. I understand that Quiche learned his lesson, but he is not an angel. Okay? However, I think that once Quiche grows up a bit, this ship could really work. Quiche does have redeeming qualities that need to be practiced more often. ... Deep Blue and Ichigo: Haha. I think it's funny, but a little weird. ... Ryou and Raspberry (Berry): I saw the attraction they had for each other in the manga. It was interesting, but, at the same time, a little out of place. I would be curious about a fanfic, though. ... Neutral: Ryou and Ichigo: I never thought it was a lasting thing. ... Masaya and Retasu: They barely have anything in common besides the fact that they are both nice people. ... Keiichirou and Retasu: They are more like siblings, I think. ... Quiche and Zakuro: I actually think she's way more mature, and could not handle him. ... Quiche and Ringo: They could bond over their unrequited love drama, but they are very different. ... Deep Blue and Ringo: I personally think that her brother is truly Deep Blue, so that would be a little awkward. ... Not Sure: ((I have no comments on these)) Keiichirou and Ichigo Masaya and Minto Deep Blue and Minto Ryou and Retasu Ryou and Bu-ling Quiche and Bu-ling Deep Blue and Zakuro ... Dislike: Quiche and Retasu: Um, no. ... Ryou and Zakuro: I think that they would have barely anything to bond over. ... Tart and Zakuro: lol no. ... Tart and Raspberry (Berry): They have pretty good love interests. I do not think anyone could get in the way. ... Tasuku and Ringo: Same as above. ... Hate: Pie and Ichigo: Why would you?? ... Pie and Bu-ling: What even...? ... Pie and Zakuro: Too alike. (Notice that those are all Pie ships lol) Extra ships: Like: Royal Highness and Miwa ... Deep Blue and Moe ... Mashio and Moe ... Neutral: Keiichirou and Miwa ... Ryou and Moe ... Royal Highness and Raspberry (Berry) ... Dislike: Masaya and Miwa ... Masaya and Moe ... Blue Bayou and Retasu (that comes from a headcanon that I may add to a future fanfic) Okay, I am done lol
