Claps hands alright we’re doing this! So I started listening to magnus archives a few months ago and it really did things to my writing ideas, so now I’m gonna round some up and post ‘em. 
I forget where/when I first saw a moth!jon but u know. He’s cute. So here is some moth!jon AU! Corruption Jon :Dc and archivist Sasha! ~1800 words. 
Since he is a corruption avatar in this, there is (as expected) some possibly gross bug imagery, but not a lot of holes. And no worms! :D

The flat is quiet. 
Quieter than Sasha expected, and much neater too than she expected when they connected this one to "Filth." The lights are off and there's a faint dusty, sweet scent in the air as she cracks open the door, torch slicing through the dark. 
It catches on motes of dust. She thinks she hears movement, a susurrus of rustling like fabric faint in the depths of the place but little else. She pushes the door further, feels it catch on the ragged old rug on the floor and watches moths flutter up, batter against her torch in little puffs of dust before they flutter away. 
Part of her worries as she steps inside, as she closes the door behind herself - leaving just a crack in case she needs to get out fast. 
This is too quiet for something of the powers. The flat should be more of a wreck, more… more miserably bloodstained, more disgusting and unnerving, but it looks, honestly, just a bit messy, a bit moth-eaten. The couch sags a bit wrong, but hell, she can't pretend she's never had one like it. There are shelves of books, their edges chewed and pages no doubt holey, there's even a mug left forgotten on the kitchen counter. It's all dim; lit only by what spills around heavy curtain edges and her own torch as she steps further in and - and hears that rustling again from the end of the hallway and heads straight for it. 
More moths flutter up at her steps, and she is wary, she is. But the things just… flutter uselessly at her hands, their wings shedding dust and their fat abdomens plump and full, but hardly a threat before they fly - further inside. 
Towards that faint rustling noise, towards the door at the end of the dim-lit hall that is just open enough to allow the frantic moths to flit inside. Writhing and wriggling at the crack between door and jamb just a moment before they vanish inside, but the movement… it makes Sasha swallow. 
Something about the way the bulbous little things squirm before they pop through sets her stomach on edge. Too many of them; more than she thought, all struggling to squeeze into that door. 
The crack writhes by the time she reaches it. 
She can swear she hears them whine and click and screech in tiny voices above the din of their frantically fluttering wings.
She uses her torch to push the door open. Fast, loosing a cloud of moths from the stuffed crack that fall and flutter and scatter into the dim room before her. 
The rustling has not gone quiet. Neither has the soft, whining song of flapping wings and voices she cannot place as she raises her torch high, fumbling for her pepper spray in her other hand. More of a comfort to herself than any real belief it would accomplish anything against something abnormal, but the room doesn’t… change. Nothing leaps out of the dim shadows, nothing comes ravening towards her with a horrid, dripping maw. 
It’s a bedroom. The bed is really as far as the light peeking around the curtains lights, in thin, dusty stripes across worn rugs and a small pile of abandoned clothes. 
“A-Ah.” 
Sasha whips her torch towards the voice, and stills. 
There is… there is something like a man there. Tucked in the corner, with all the moths frantically fluttering, scuttling towards it. She watches, stomach queasy, as the moths drill between the heavy folds of the blanket? The wrap? It has folded around itself. It reaches a hand out to a particularly fat straggler and cradles it in its palms like a treasure, bringing it up slowly, carefully, and opens thin, paled lips and lets the thing crawl straight into its mouth as Sasha gags. 
It is almost worse then when it looks up. 
Long, straggling hair that was probably rather nice once. Now it is loose and lank, black shot with grey and dust that hangs over… over his shoulders, over the thing he has cocooned himself within. His eyes are dark. Too dark. 
There are no whites, she realizes, and cannot help but feel her fingers twinge around the pepper spray. 
But he isn’t attacking. He is just looking at her, head cocked like a curious animal as the moths burrow back into the shelter he offers. 
She can work with this. She sucks in a breath, wills her stomach to settle as she tells it it could really be so, so much worse, and points the torch further towards the floor. Good manners. Going out on a limb that he’s probably not too fond of bright light. 
“Hello,” she says. The strange man stares at her. Hard enough she swears she can feel the tracks his eyes leave on her skin, but she only makes herself stand taller. He seems to like that. He laughs. Not maliciously. 
It’s soft. Like cotton, like it’s been a long while since he’s used his voice, and the rasp sticks to it as he speaks and Sasha tries not to linger on where exactly that moth went. 
“Hello, Archivist. Doing house calls?” 
He’s smiling. And that’s what gets her. 
His voice is soft and smooth like old silk and his smile stiff like he’s unused to using it, but something about him feels familiar. It’s there, just at the corner of her mind, and she knows she’s frowning deeply as she casts a line and tries to hook just why she feels like she knows this strange man, but then he laughs again and stands. 
He rustles as he does. That… that thing wrapped around him doesn’t move the way it should, not like cloth, but she can’t immediately place that, either. Not until he walks a little closer and her torch light catches on it and it… shimmers. 
Like moth wings. And Sasha sucks in a breath. 
She can see it now. The patterns in the dusty brown, the oranges that circle white to make massive, partly hidden eyespots. The thick, dark veins supporting the overall structure, and she can’t help herself from blurting out, “Can you fly with those?” 
The man shudders, that smile hung unmoving on his face as he brings a hand to his mouth and coughs against the static. 
“Not well,” he answers into his hand, his too-dark eyes sparkling. He lets his hand drop back into the too-layered folds of his wings and shuffles a little closer; his wingtips drag across the floor, like a blanket wrapped around a child too small for it, and she can see now where his long, untied hair turns into something shorter. A ruff of fur at the back of his neck, across the back of his shoulders.
(Can see the moths wriggling down into the fur, settling there, an army of tiny, coal-black eyes staring out at her, glinting green when her torch light catches them.) 
And then he stands still, that faint smile on his face, his dark eyes half-lidded in an expression she cannot place, and waits as that soft, soft distant song hums in the room. 
Sasha exhales. This is more than she dared hope for. He’s talking. He’s non-aggressive.
“I,” she begins, wetting her tongue before plunging back into her words. “I was wondering if I could ask you some questions. About the ‘Filth.’ About you.”
He watches, and she feels emboldened. 
(Her phone begins to ring as she steps closer to him, and she ignores it. It’s Elias. She knows.)
“We don’t have answers. And if you could tell me, tell us what you know? About… about what’s happening.” 
Her phone stops ringing. It starts again. The man smiles wider and reaches out. Sasha can see that his hands are… strange. Plated like chitin, and the desire to grab his hand and investigate each delicately plated joint wars deeply with the uneasy reminder that there are probably moths crawling beneath, of statements that were far, far more explicit about what ‘Filth’ did to a person than this man showed. 
His hand waves in front of her face for a moment and she starts, coming back to herself, as her phone angrily rings again. 
“Your phone?” the man asks, and Sasha doesn’t hesitate for a moment to shut the thing off. 
(Elias. All three calls. If he doesn’t want her here, then she’s not leaving.) 
“Well Archivist,” and she knows she is not missing the strange bitterness that clings to that word this time, knows there is something she is missing about him, “If you have that many questions, we should probably get a little more comfortable. I have a feeling that once I let you start, you’ll keep me well after dusk.” 
And isn’t it bizarre? As he brushes past Sasha - both carefully and clearly telegraphing his movements so she only feels the barest touch of his wings as he heads back out into the hallway - she realizes she doesn’t feel afraid of this one. A little disgusted if she thinks about him too hard, yes, but there’s been no threat. No… no menace, no winding, evasive non-answers, just. Incredibly human remarks. It almost circles right back around from comforting to even worse than something as alien as the thing with the door. Michael. 
But as the rustling moves away from her down the hallway, she can’t help but flash her torch around the bedroom. One last bit of nosiness. 
An old, worn bed, rather like the couch. Shelves with books so moth-eaten they’ve gone to pieces. An open closet, filled with over-large sweaters and… She blinks. And oddly proper button ups, slacks. 
And then… and then she turns her torch in one last semi-circle and catches upon a strange shine beneath the lumpy pillows. 
Like polaroids. 
The itch that there’s something she should know only grows when she spots them; growing from a thing at the edge of her thoughts to an all consuming need that drives her in fast steps across the dusty rug before she even catches herself. She fishes the pictures out with deft fingers and - and she thinks her heart stops in her chest. 
She knows the people in the picture. 
That long, dark hair shot with grey is distinctive - even set on a much more vibrant, lively face, and above a painfully crisp button up. He’s wearing glasses in the picture, and. A name tag. 
She can’t read the name, but she’d recognize that emblem anywhere. Not that she needs to. 
Because beside the stuffy librarian like man, his eyes green instead of black, stands… Tim. Tim, his shirt as loud as ever, his smile boisterous, and an arm slung affectionately around the man who couldn’t possibly be any more his opposite. And the same horrible name tag pinned to a pineapple-strewn lapel. 
The man worked at the Magnus Institute.��
He worked with Tim. 
She knows his name now.

Most Hits
Easily Detours with 160k hits. She has over 4x the hits as the one below her. Detours, for those who don’t know, is my super long pokemon fic that focuses on Ingo, Dawn, and Rei! I’m super proud of it, and out a lot of work into it - not just writing wise, it has specialized page breaks and character guides for every chapter. So I’m glad it got the love it deserves :D
Second Most Kudos
That title goes to Fate Ties Us Together with 3k kudos. Surprisingly popular, it’s an ATLA soulmate au fic, mostly focusing on Zuko having to work up the nerve and find the right time to tell the Gaang he’s their soulmate (it’s more like a platonic over romantic thing). It’s very cute, but also god I could’ve written it better haha.
Third Most Comments
The Archive and the Archivist with 363 comments.this one actually surprised me! It’s a TMA fox where Jon goes back in time to season 1, but with the twist that Sasha from an au where she was the Archivist also goes back in time, and both try to covertly change the future. I had no idea it was so popular comment wise, but I’m happy for it!

I DONT WANT TO BE THIS TYPE OF ANIMAL ANYMORE is here with 42k words.it’s a Disco Elysium fic where Harry has to get through the Hanged Man case with, on top of everything else, being a werewolf. It’s a super fun fic to write, so it checks out it has a lot of words! It’s also hard tho bc the skills are so tricky to write.
Least Words
Maybe He Never Left with 217 words. Oh my god, this is a Voltron fic from 2017, mentioning how I felt like Shiro has some lasting effects from his time captive. And you know what? I can stand by it, really I still am fond of most of my Voltron stuff - it’s all basically season 1 or 2, so it’s from when I had hope for the series.and I loved exploring Shiro as a character.
This is the part where I’m supposed to get people. Uh, @the-east-art, I’m… I can’t think of anyone else who for sure writes fanfic. Well, so it if you want to! I love looking at my stats, I think it’s fascinating.

Hey so I have had a lot of ideas for TMA fics and I don't write fics,, like ever,, so if anyone wants some inspiration far a kinda crazy fic, here's most of my list:
• Au were martin really was a ghost
• Jonah killed Martin after Jon promised to not look in his head and when they go to fight Elias/Jonah it's revealed (that one's pretty wild and probably wouldn't work but I like it)

 (overlapping, adopting the ‘Archivist’ voice) Statement of Timothy Stoker, regarding the first time he went to Pride with his brother, Danny. June 10th, 2016.
 (cheekily) Statement begins.
 TIM (STATEMENT)
 (in his normal voice) I realized I was into blokes too when I was 15, you know. Think it took me a while because of the whole ace thing, though that took me until I was in uni to really figure out. I was still fine with sex, you know, always enjoyed it when it came up, just… never really wanted it with anyone in particular. So I suppose I’d assumed for a while that the things I was feeling toward other guys weren’t romantic because I never had the sexual parts to go along with them. (with wry humor) Almost ruined a few relationships that way, actually.
 But I’m getting a bit off-topic. Can’t be one of those rambling statement givers Jon hates. God, I can see his face now, that thing he does with his nose—Martin, you know the one, the- the way it looks like he’s just smelled something really, really rank.
 MARTIN
 I thought you said you weren’t going to ramble.
 TIM
 Cheeky, cheeky. Okay, where was I. Right.
 TIM (STATEMENT)
 Mom and Dad weren’t real big on the whole bi thing, so the first time I got the chance to go to Pride was in uni. The first time I got the chance to go with Danny was after he turned 18 and got his first modeling gig. At least, I think he was already modeling back then. Point is, we were both out of the house, and Danny had been dying to go to Pride with me ever since I sent him pictures of me and Sasha eating an entire box of rainbow-colored donuts that first year. I’d figured out I was ace by then, but it had been pretty recent, so when we got there, I found one of the vendors selling those big flags you drape over your shoulders and got an ace one. Felt a bit weird having the ace flag instead of the bi one like the other years, but I had worn that pink, blue, and purple button-down Sasha got me for Christmas once, so overall, it felt all right.
 And Danny—god, he loved it. Pretty sure he ate his weight in fried food that day.
 [HE LAUGHS]
 Almost got the aro flag he’d borrowed from Sasha dirty, actually, when he—
 (quickly changes course) Ah, nothing! Sasha, if you’re listening to this, absolutely nothing happened to your flag, and I definitely did not have it laundered before I returned it to you.
 TIM
 Aaaaand that’s it! Statement ends, I guess.
 See—easy! (a bit more seriously) But really—you don’t have to record one if you don’t want to, Martin.
 MARTIN

 TIM

 (with an audible smile) Statement of, er, Martin Blackwood. Regarding… a crush. No, no, wait—god, that sounds so juvenile. Regarding himself, and a person who- er, someone whom he—
 [HE SIGHS]
 Fine. Regarding a crush. Statement given June 10th, 2016.
 Statement begins.
 MARTIN (STATEMENT)
 I’m always a little embarrassed to tell people that I’ve never dated anyone before? Okay, a- a lot embarrassed, actually. I try not to bring it up, but people will say things like, oh, you know how it is to shop for a partner or meeting her parents is definitely nerve-wracking—which is wrong on, er, two accounts, actually—and then I feel more awkward not telling them that I don’t know, actually, because I’ve never been in a relationship longer than a week or so. Then, they’ll get all sympathetic, like it’s some- some tragedy that I’m not involved with someone, and that’s worse, because then they’ll offer to set me up with people, or say that they don’t understand why I’m single because I’m a catch or whatever, and I have to give them some excuse about not interested at the moment.
 It’s not that, not really. Dates with strangers, they- they just never work out for me.
 I think I fall somewhere on the aromantic spectrum? I didn’t think about it much until Sasha mentioned it once over drinks—I think you were there, Tim, although you were (laughs) very drunk by that point. I told her I hadn’t had a crush on anyone since sixth form, and she threw around a bunch of terms. I- I honestly don’t really remember, it was kind of overwhelming and (laughs) I was also pretty drunk as well. But yeah, it… it sounds about right.
 (hesitantly, as if bracing himself for impact) So… this person. Who I, er. Recently, that is, who I…
 [HE CLEARS HIS THROAT]
 It’s really strange, that’s all. And a- a lot. I—heh—I don’t really know what to do about it.
 MARTIN
 Uh, statement ends? I guess? I, uh, don’t really have anything else to say. (jokingly) It’s not like there’s any, er, follow-up or whatever. (to Tim) Was- was that okay?
 TIM
 (audibly smiling) Yup! Most excellent, Marto. (more seriously) You felt okay, right?
 MARTIN
 (huh) Yeah. Yeah, I- I did. A bit nice, actually. (quickly) As- as long as this stays in the archives, though. It… it is staying in the archives, right?
 TIM
 Oh, definitely. Right next to the section on love potions, I think.
 MARTIN
 Tim!
 TIM
 (laughs) Yes, Martin, it’s staying in the archives. Pinkie promise. Just you, me, Sasha, and Jon. (in the tone of a man who knows a great secret and wants nothing more than to share it) Speaking of Jon—
 MARTIN
 (quickly) Uh, recording ends!
 TIM
 (undeterred) —is he the—?
 [CLICK]

 SASHA
 Right. So, according to Tim, I’m supposed to be recording a statement on, quote, my “most swashbucklingest experience as an esteemed member of the LGBT community.” He left this recorder on my desk and stole my scone. Timothy Stoker, I will not forget that. It was white chocolate raspberry, and I’m stealing the money it cost out of your wallet.

[SHE CLEARS HER THROAT]
 Statement of Sasha James, given 10th June 2016. Subject of statement is… hmm. Let’s say… (laughs) A brief relationship with one Timothy Stoker.
 Statement begins.
 SASHA (STATEMENT)
 Tim, I know you’re listening to this, and I just want to preface this by saying that yes, it was Italian that we had for dinner that night, not Greek. You’re thinking of a different friendship-turned-hookup-turned-awkward-aftermath-turned-friendship.
 [SHE LAUGHS QUIETLY]
 Anyway, I guess the best place to begin with this whole thing is by saying that I’ve known I was aro since I was 16 and that I’ve never been very good at talking about it. I’ve ended plenty of tried and failed relationships with the it’s-not-you-it’s-me talk because I didn’t know how to explain that I just… wasn’t interested in romance.
 I wanted to explain it to you beforehand, Tim, I really, really did. We’ve had this conversation, I know I know—I won’t rehash it over tape.
 [SHE SIGHS]
 But the important thing is that I like you so, so much, and—god, this is stupid—I guess maybe I thought that it wouldn’t matter with you? That you could like me romantically and I could like you platonically and it would be fine. Like I said, stupid, but you asked me out to that Italian place—yes, Italian, for god’s sake, I had the chicken parm and you had some sort of lasagna abomination—and I just… couldn’t say no. And it was nice, really. I had a lot of fun.
 And then we slept together. And… that was really nice. But then, the next morning, the… the guilt set in. Because I felt the same as I always had about you—which is to say that I loved you, just not in the same way you loved me—and I became convinced that I’d gone and ruined the whole thing.
 Ignoring you for a week was probably not the correct response. (quieter) Yeah, definitely not my finest moment. But I’d gotten it in my head that the moment I told you that I didn’t feel that way about you and that I would never feel that way about you—or about anyone—you’d hate me. And you don’t have to say that you’d never hate me—I know you wouldn’t. I think I knew it then, too. But fear is a powerful thing.
 …
 Anyway, you know how it all turned out. You finally dragged me out to coffee and I finally told you why I’d been avoiding you and it was really, really awkward for about a month after that and then it just… wasn’t anymore. (audibly smiling) And you’re still my best friend, Tim. Even if you did steal my scone.
 [THE SOUND OF PAPERS RUSTLING AND A CHAIR ROLLING BACKWARD]

 TIM
 Hey boss! Got a moment?
 ARCHIVIST
 (irritated) Tim, please at least knock when the door to my office is closed. I was just about to record a statement.
 TIM
 (unbothered) So if you were about to, that means you’re not recording one right now, which means you do have a moment.
 ARCHIVIST
 (flatly) Shut the door on your way out, Tim.
 TIM
 (brightly) Right you are, boss! Juuuust going to leave this here on your desk. Bring it back whenever you’re done!
 [PAPERS RUSTLE AS SOMETHING IS PLACED ON THE DESK]

 Before I begin, I would like to make it very clear that this is not an appropriate use of working hours or the tape recorders, which should be used for statements that won’t record digitally as per Elias’s request.

 That being said, I am… not entirely opposed to this project. So, I suppose…

 Statement of Jonathan Sims, Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute, London, regarding… regarding a black ring worn on the middle finger of his right hand. Statement recorded by subject, June 10th, 2016.
 Statement begins.
 ARCHIVIST (STATEMENT)
 I’ve often been told that I am not a very open person. I don’t necessarily intend to be closed-off, but I’ve also never found the need to disclose every aspect of my personal life to everyone I come into contact with. And yes, Tim—because I trust that you and you alone will be listening to this tape—that is a perfectly respectable way to live one’s life. Not everyone needs to know what I ate for breakfast that morning or who my favorite primary school teacher was.
 …
 I… will admit, though, that in certain circumstances, I… could probably stand to be more transparent regarding aspects of my personal life. Perhaps that’s why Georgie bought me the ring.
 It wasn’t a special occasion. She just brought it back from the shop one day, a few weeks after a… particularly illuminating conversation about certain sexual identities, and dropped it atop my copy of Wuthering Heights. Honestly, I had no idea what it was at first. I- (heh) I tried to make a joke about unorthodox proposals, but I- I don’t really think it landed. Georgie just looked at me and said that she’d seen it on one of the online forums, that it was called an ace ring, and that she thought I might like it. I think I was more surprised about the fact that the ring fit perfectly than at the fact that she’d bought me the ring in the first place.
 So I wore it. And it felt… nice. Understand, I don’t keep quiet about my romantic and sexual identities out of shame or embarrassment or indecision; I simply don’t feel the need to announce them at any given moment. So I’ve always been fond of small things—pins and stickers and such—that I can incorporate into my life, insignificant enough that they aren’t readily apparent to anyone but me, as they’re for me more than for anyone else. My ring is one such thing.

On a Tuesday in the middle of November, not long after Gerry's 28th birthday, the three of them eat dinner at Gerry's flat, as they often do these days. Jon cooks for them and after, Martin and Gerry wash the dishes and debate the book they both just finished reading.
Jon has been twitchy all evening, so they leave him to read his own book in peace.
He wanders in at one point, leaning against the counter. "Gerry, do you know what day it is?"
Gerry looks over at him in such a way as to indicate that he really doesn't.
"Our six-month anniversary?" He tries.
"No," Martin pipes up, "That's not for weeks yet."
Jon and Gerry both look at him askance. "What? Your boyfriend starts dating another man, you remember the date. I can't believe you two don't know." Martin says as if that about covers it.
"Nevermind that." Jon snaps, and even with his previous moodiness, the others are taken aback at his blunt words and even harsher tone.
"Something wrong, Jon?" Gerry asks quietly, leaning against the opposite counter to Jon and crossing his arms. His tone suggests what he actually wanted to say was 'Do we have a problem here, bitch?' but he manages to reign the actual words in.
"I want to know why you left without saying goodbye." Jon's words are filled with a multitude of frustrations, none of which are actually conveyed in his limited words.
"Yesterday?" Gerry asks, incredulous. "You were asleep!"
"No! Not yesterday." Jon snaps back. "When we were younger. It's been ten years today since you disappeared off the face of the planet."
"Oh," Gerry responds quietly, his defensive posture dropping. He leans his hands back on the table behind him, bringing his shoulders up around his ears. It’s a rare display of confident, edgy Gerry trying to shrink himself.
"I thought we were, you know. Together. Then one day you were just gone! As if you had never existed. Your mother wouldn't tell me anything at all, just sat there smirking at me, said that you were gone and she didn't know when you were coming back, or if you were ever coming back. Which you never did, actually." Jon has been pacing, his voice rising with each new word until the final words are shouted accusatorily into the space between them.
Gerry knew Jon had wanted to talk about this since the day he walked in the library and back into his life. He had waited, been patient, and Gerry had put it off in the hopes that he would never have to choke the words out. Now, that patience was obviously over, and he knew he owed Jon this explanation.
"We were together Jon. I loved you."
"So why? What did I do so wrong, that I got to wake up one day and find you gone ?" Jon's voice has become desperate, and they can all hear the tears that he is trying to hold back.
"Don't say that. You didn't do anything wrong. We weren't perfect, but we were always so good together. I... I had to get out of there. And I couldn't leave any clues behind, so I couldn't tell you anything, because it wouldn't have been safe for either of us." Gerry reaches towards Jon to soothe him, but he flinches away and Gerry doesn't pursue him.
"I don't understand." The tears have come, and Gerry desperately tries to hold back his own when he sees them.
Martin had up until that point been standing resolutely in the corner, trying not to interfere in their pre-Martin argument. At the advent of tears, Martin moves to stand at Jon's back, gripping his shoulder for comfort. Gerry looks bereft and Martin holds out a hand to get him to come closer as well. They huddle all together, both Jon and Gerry taking comfort in Martin's steadiness.
Gerry leans into Jon, sliding his hand around his neck and pressing their foreheads together. "I'm so sorry, love. I've never forgiven myself for just disappearing on you. I thought about you every day."
"I love you," Jon whispers as Martin rocks them both gently. "But I need to know."
"I love you too." Gerry shuts his eyes and wishes more than ever to erase his shitty legacy of pain and blood.

Martin drags them to bed and offers to leave them alone to their talk.
"Please stay," Gerry says, grasping his hand. "You both need to know, and I don't want to have to talk through this twice."
So they all pile into Gerry's bed together, sitting in a vague circle like teenagers at a slumber party.
As Gerry starts to talk, Martin drags him over toward him and begins braiding his dark blue hair. It's both an offer of physical comfort and affection (easily Gerry's main love language) and a simple way of letting him off the hook for eye contact.
With Jon staring at him quite intently, Martin doesn't think he needs any further pressure.
"Jon, you-" He starts and then halts abruptly. Jon reaches over and grasps his hand, attempting to further ground him. "You remember my mother. I know you saw how, how just off she was. Manipulative and controlling. By turns demanding and completely uninterested in me. One day I would be free to run wild for weeks at a time, the next she would have a meltdown if I wasn't exactly where she wanted me, every second of the day and night." Gerry blows a breath out, shuddering at the memory of a particularly bad incident with a vase that had left him needing several stitches over his left eye.
"Well, she wasn't always like that. I remember her being a pretty good mom when I was young, if distant. She was always far more interested in being a wife than a mother, and she loved the way my father adored her.
“When I was 7, my father was blinded in an accident at work. I remember the day the phone call came. She spoke very calmly to the hospital, before hanging up the phone and shattering every picture frame in the house." Martin is finished with Gerry's hair and simply leans into him, offering silent comfort. "He coped okay with his new disability actually, and I liked helping him learn the world again with no sight. My mother never recovered from her initial breakdown though. She was angry and petulant that she needed to help and support him for the first time in their entire relationship and became more and more unhinged over the course of a year.
"One day I came home from school to find a puddle of blood soaked into the floor of the living room. She said there had been an accident and my father wasn't coming back. She hit me for the first time when I cried. She told me that I was a man now, and tears were for useless girls and disgusting… Well, you get the picture."
Gerry pauses and glances between them. A few tears have started to run down his face, but he doesn't seem to even notice them.
"We moved a few days later, and that was all I ever knew about my father's death until I was eighteen, almost ten years later. I'll spare you the horrid details, but as I'm sure you've already guessed, she murdered him. She explained very, very graphically what she had done with the body, and that she would never be caught, no one would ever think to blame her, even if anyone could ever prove that he was dead at all."
The words hang heavy in the air between the three of them. Gerry feels the comfort of their touches, but can hardly stand the affection anymore. He gets up off the bed and goes to look out the bedroom window, arms crossed and posture hard.
"Then she looked me right in the eye. And she told me that was exactly what would happen to Jon if she ever caught me with him again."
Dead, cold silence fills the room.
Gerry turns back around to find them both watching him. "So, I packed whatever I could fit into my duffle bag, and I got the hell out of dodge. I ran. I ran because I couldn't close my eyes at night with seeing your face white and cold and covered in blood and," he breaks off and takes a shuddering breath, covering his eyes and sinking to his knees. "And I couldn't stand that she would hurt you because of me. That all your light and potential would be ripped away from you in blood and pain and nothing I felt for you could make even the risk of that worthwhile."
He lifts his head to look up at them, where they’ve moved to the side of the bed towards him. “And do you want to know what the worst part is, actually? I can’t get over the idea that even though I haven’t seen Mary Keay in 10 years, the ghost of her demons lives inside of me. That I'm really just… Her. That one day my mind will snap and I'll be a danger to you both and I'll be the one hurting you, just like she hurt him. And then I'll just be the same monster who has always haunted my dreams."
Martin and Jon exchange a heavy look. They can scarcely believe that Gerry had endured so much and yet is still… Gerry. Happy, flirtatious, loving Gerry. Gerry, who fills their lives with colour and spontaneity, always showing up when they least expected him, pushing himself into their gravity and asking for space in their lives.
Despite the rather violent nature of Gerry's confession, it doesn't change anything for either of them. Things are not yet settled between them, but they curl around Gerry on the floor and they cry together over shattered innocence and sacrificed futures, and Jon promises himself that he will never let Mary Keay come between him and Gerry ever again.

Cryptid Jon (Blind Eye AU)
An AU where Jon prevents himself from finishing the watcher’s crown. He shut the eye but in doing so kind of resets everything and he gets erased from existence somehow.  
If you wanna do something more with this be my guest btw, write, draw, whatever. Don’t even have to credit i'm just throwing stuff out here.
Things get reset back to episode one basically
Although Jon doesn’t and has never existed there’s no real butterfly effect from this, things are the same but he’s absent.

None of the Fears nor their avatars are aware of him, not even the web or eye.
In fact he’s a blind spot for the eye, at least to Jonah.
He’s still got those good good Archivist powers and can fight avatars, it just doesn’t feed the eye like it used to. Just him. They’re HIS powers now.
He decides he should keep his distance because w h a t  t h e  h e l l  he is NOT rushing into this one. Keeping his card close as he can.
Basically tries to secretly help out the Archivist Crew with as much self control as he can. (LOTS of angst from the shadows about Tim, Sasha, Martin)
Lives in the tunnels and chats  with Leitner some before he gets piped.
“accidentally” Fails to mention to Leitner that there’s a pipe with his name on it.
Meets Michael and they’re kinda buds now(?)
He kind of reveals himself preventing the Jane Prentiss attack.
Manages to stop the Not!Them from taking anyone.
Everyone’s just worried and confused like “oh no there’s another monster and he knows all about us?”
except Elias who is kind of freaking out because he has no idea who that is and he can’t See it either what the fuuuuuuu but files it in the back of his head as some weird Darkness Avatar and maybe it can mark Sasha.
Elias is trying to build the watchers crown with Sasha now btw because he has no idea of what happened before.

Well shit, Basira is looking into him now because he managed to still be blamed for Leitner’s murder.
This wouldn’t be a problem if Daisy (currently unchecked avatar of the Hunt) wasn’t helping her GF.
Jon’s out of the tunnels now because the Archive Crew’s exploring. (Not!Them escaped and is staying away from the Eye’s domain so it’s not trapped there. Preparing for the unknowing probably.)
Jon makes some knew friends! (The other Avatars) They hate him! Very Much!
Jon’s actually become a bit infamous among the things of the fears as this (supposed) Avatar to The Eye that just keeps fucking their stuff up.
Micheal is just loving watching everyone pull their hair about this. He’s still taking people though (Helen…)
Peter complains about it to Elias. Elias has moved him up a few spaces on his his concern list.
Meanwhile Sasha, Tim, and Martin have also shifted their focus to that strange man that helped(?) them, supposedly clocked an old man to death, then vanished.
He shows up in statements sometimes and they’re debating on wether he’s a monster or some kind of monster hunter or maybe just a friendly-ish monster...
Tim think’s he’s good because he killed the worms (and stopped a circus mannequin in one statement), Martin’s cautious because he showed up at his house right before the worms attacked him and Sasha’s torn and undecided.
Sasha and Daisy have a fight like Daisy and Jon did but it gets sorted in a similar way except with less Elias hate.
Elias doesn’t face as much resistance in this au so doesn’t let his mask slip as much but he is being thrown so off by Jon.
Elias gets less hate because everyones focusing more on Jon aka strange library man aka Joe Spooky.
But I cannot stress enough how much worse this is for him than cannon.

Melanie and Georgie are on a date or something when they come home to find a stranger petting the Admiral. Freaking out they jump to fight (Melanie)/call the police (Georgie) but the man stands up apologizing they froze.
Having him look directly at them made them feel like he was looking at every layer of them, from clothes to skin to bone.
It felt like he could riffle through their minds like a file cabinet but (even worse) like he didn’t need too. Like he already knew everything he wanted to about them.
He said they clearly didn’t recognize him, disappointed, like they should have, and that he just needed something familiar to be with for a while (gesturing to the cat).
He then mumbled something about recommending they avoid travel for a while and started to walk briskly (almost… awkwardly?) past them to the door.
He paused halfway out the door and mumbled to “stay away from The Magnus Institute, especially the Archivist. Don’t give them anything and whatever you do-”
He turned, and they could feel him seeing something about themselves even they didn’t know, all apologeticness gone from his character. “Do. Not. Give. A statement.”
They knew- they KNEW- with every fiber of their beings that he meant them no harm but would bring it regardless. In that moment, with every fiber of their beings, they knew.
Then he blinked and hurried out before either of them could snap to their senses.
They filled out a police report and tried to forget it but could constantly swear they caught glimpses of him around their neighborhood after that.

Oh Boy The Web Keeps Trying To Wrap Itself Around Jon But It’s Not Working And It’s Pissing It Off!
The Unknowing happens much earlier
Eventually they go to stop the unknowing (guided by Elias) along with Basira and Daisy.
Nikola actually kidnapped Jon because she was obsessed with this “stranger” and thought he’d be fun for the ritual.
Micheal frees him and Helen shows up but they don’t kill each other. 
Micheal liiiives. 
Instead The Archive Crew finds a door opening up and the strange man from the tunnels assures them that the unknowing will fail whether they do anything or not.
He warns Sasha (and subconsciously Tim) especially to stay away from the stranger.
He lets slip a BUNCH more of way more personal information he knows about them to convince them to stay away.
He also warns them to not trust Elias. After Matin went “but Elias said-“
Sasha want to know what The Stranger means.
Tim does not like this. Neither does Daisy. They end up trying to fight Jon. Jon refuses to fight and let’s slip something about The Hunt controlling Daisy then bolts back into Helen’s door.
The Archivcrew end up being stalled enough that by the time they get there the whole place is aflame. (Thanks Jude….)
Tim and Martin have switched opinions of him. Tim distrusts him now and Martin feels he’s an ally, at least. Sasha has decided that whatever he is he’s information and goes on a search to find him with Daisy (uh oh) and Basira.
They end up going to where a break in was reported, nothing stolen and the description of a short, heavily scarred man with long hair matched their spooky man. (It’s Georgie’s house.)
Georgie and Melanie accidentally end up giving a statement which made for a very awkward moment when they said he said to not give anything to the Archivist and Sasha had to clear her throat and mention that she is the Archivist. Oops.
Meanwhile Elias is going nuts because now this blind spot has actively disrupted his plans. Jon has his full attention.
Elias (…Jonah) is patient. He’s waited so long for this, putting plans on hold to stomp out an unwanted rock in the road is fine.

My late take on Archivist Sasha
Spoilers for the first 4 seasons. warning, I am keeping the tragedy aspect
Okay to start off I have a pet peeve with other Archivist Sasha aus because everyone assumes that she is the most capable of the s1 crew, but a lot of those people probably just heard Tim say that and ran with it because I'm here to tell you why Sasha is a chaotic neutral
Sasha may not get much character development but what I can get is that she worked with Gertrude for a short while, she's very confident, and had no trouble running headfirst into things without much preparation (take her date with Michael)
So Sasha wasn't originally the archivist. Jon was still choose. But due to a mishap with the Prentiss attack, Jon and Sasha's roles are switched and Elias has to dispose of Jon because he can't have a stranger in charge. Tim and Martin are good candidates for archivist 2, both already marked by separate entities, but Martin is too soft and Tim refuses the position, holding his ground that Sasha's is the most deserving. Elias doesn't like putting Sasha in charge, but he doesn't have much choice. He'll make it work
Sasha is paranoid. Seeing the body of her former mentor and then the disappearance of her boss? There's no way she could remain calm. After some light interrogation, as in breaking into Tim and Martin's house at unreasonable hours, Sasha concludes that Elias has to be the killer. So she kills him. Elias wasn't quick enough to stop her, and so Sasha, out of friends on with blood on her hands, hides away in the tunnels
Meanwhile Basira and Daisy are getting real tired of being called to the institute. Peter takes over, temporarily putting Martin in charge of archive work until he can track down Sasha and continue Elias's work. Meanwhile Sasha has more blood on her hands, having killed Leitner and stolen his book on maneuvering through the tunnels. She hides there for weeks, getting some help from Mike to survive, only coming out when she sees Tim with Daisy and Basira, investigating the tunnels. Due to a bit if the distortion's meddling, they can't quite pin Elias's death to Sasha, and she's put back in charge under Peter
Peter managed to recover Jonah's eyes from Sasha's attack. He sends them off the deal with the stranger while he finds a new body for him. After Sasha and Tim blow up the stranger's ritual, Peter snatches up Tim's body and shoves Jonah in, hoping it won't be too much of a problem
Sasha stays in her coma for a while. Daisy, Basira, and Melanie don't become part of the institute, so when Jared attacks there's basically just Martin and "Tim" there to defend it. Martin gets trapped in the lonely trying to escape them and "Tim" of course has a backup hiding place. Sasha wakes up and tries to rescue Martin, killing Peter in the process. But Sasha wasn't close enough to Martin, and even if she was Martin is too far lost to the lonely to be saved
Finally Sasha confronts "Tim" or as she can easily tell, Jonah. She hasn't been marked enough to complete the ritual and she has to kill the man that looks like her lover and last friend. She delays Jonah's apocalypse, but she's too far gone to the slaughter to go back to being normal, so she resigns herself to being and avatar
To elborate, Melanie doesn't return because she hears about the murder and double disappearance and decided it wasn't worth the risk to return. And Basira and Daisy decide is that after so much shit happening over there that they don't want to be anyway near that place

At least, it would be, if it wasn’t for the fucking Owl.
A freaking. Amazing. Daemon au. Ties the lore of Dust with TMA lore very satisfyingly, but is mostly about Jon navigating what it means to be human, or, in the absence of that, a person, and doesn’t require prior knowledge of His Dark Materials. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Features an original Eye Avatar character who’s a YouTube personality; she is infuriating and inspired and genuinely frightening and I cannot say enough good things.

Oh, this one totally didn’t go the way I expected it to. A study in isolation. Could go into the category above, as the ending is not bleak, but the tone of the whole is somewhat more depressing than most there.

Oh, this one just made me sad. The poor not!them, which is something I never thought I’d say.

In which the Eye is fond of Martin. Perhaps a little too fond for comfort.
Somehow manages to be both sweet and horrifying—the characterisation of the Eye is incredible. ‘The Eye loves Martin’ is a scenario that’s so utterly doomed to failure and yet the writing is packed with so much pathos that I just want them all to be happy. A fantastic use of themes of agency and choice, and the single best use of Beholding as a source of horror I’ve read.

Jon Sims is awake, and has begun preparations for the Rite of the Watcher's Crown. Peter Lukas, who woke him, would be content to rule at his side. Martin is very upset about all of this, and the Lukases aren't thrilled with it either.
I really can’t say anything without spoiling the end and it’s so good. An alternate take on the Watcher’s Crown. Not a pairing that I ever thought would work for me, but this made it work.

Peter Lukas is a lighthouse keeper. One evening, he gets a call from a cryptic overseer tasked with monitoring his work.
This is such a vivid and yet subtle story—from the setting to the emotions portrayed, it creeps up on you slowly. The ending was like the gentlest possible gut-punch. The sequel just completed, and yeah, just as wonderful. This one is very much LonelyEyes but I listed it here because it is just exquisitely painful.

Martin has always liked the idea of love at first sight. It’s such a romantic idea, the whole thing of it. Seeing someone and instantly feeling that strange, twisting feeling deep inside that every single media likes to obsess over. Of knowing you are in love within the day, petals falling from your mouth and warmth filling your chest as love burrows deep, vines twisting through your lungs. He always liked the idea of it. And then Jonathan Sims starts working at the Magnus Institute.
Somehow manages to be lighter and fluffier than most hanahaki fare, despite the setting. I’ve reread this one a lot.

Oh boy. So these are all favourite fics but this one is a favourite amongst favourites. The way Jonah is characterised (i.e. incredibly sensitive to scrutiny) is my favourite depiction of him, and the slow-burn between him and Elias is far sweeter than it has any right to be. Also, it’s hilarious.
The Magnus Records series by ErinsWorks
In a world parallel to that of the Archives and the Institute, a supernatural sanctuary stands against a cruel and uncaring world: A world of bureaucracy and tyranny, of murder and carnage, of loneliness and surveillence, of plague and death. But in this world of fear and misery, 14 entities born of the hopes of the world have emerged. And one of them has made their home here, at The Magnus Sanctuary. Perhaps, the employees within may lead happier lives than their counterparts did in the Archives.
This is just so goddamn pure. The author writes a really imaginative, fleshed-out alternate world and alternate Entities with engaging, well-written short statements. All of the character voices are absolutely on point, and it’s overall absurdly hopeful without ever feeling overly saccharine. I love this series so much, you guys, you don’t even know. I want to print it out and paste it on my wall. I love it.

This manages to hit that perfect sweet spot of satisfying and hilarious. Rosie gets to torment Elias, as she well deserves.

This one’s a little less focused on the world at large and more on JonMartin specifically.

Jonathan Sims reads a book and saves the world; although maybe the real salvation is the friends he makes along the way; (although perhaps the world itself and the darkness that exists behind it isn't quite as out to get everyone as it seems).
More ‘soft revolution’ than ‘soft apocalypse’, but has the same vibe. A time travel fix-it. Incomplete but worth it if this is a mood that appeals to you.

Falls somewhere between ‘Apocalypse’ and ‘Soft Apocalyse’ but I’m putting it here because I feel like it. Also technically a LonelyEyes fic. I found it hard to follow at first but it’s worth sticking with; things will eventually begin to make sense and come together.

I’m going to be honest—I didn’t know where to put this one. But it ended up here because the real standout of this fic for me is the portrayal of Sasha, and especially her portrayal as an aro character. So I’m putting it here. Mind the content warnings with this one!

The City And Its Sorrows by cuttooth
“What makes you think your friend is in Eskew?” David asks. He feels he can risk the scrutiny of the city that far. “I read that this is a place people end up when they get lost,” says the man. “This is a place people end up,” David agrees./The Archivist comes to Eskew.
Contemplative piece, and I love the way it presents David’s relationship with Eskew, the way he finds it horrible and hates it and yet belongs to it, is almost proud in the way he shows to to Jon. Great little vignette of two people oppressed by eldritch powers, intersecting.

This one is far more focused on Jon than David, and is honestly more Eskew-weird than Spiral-weird. In the best way. Told in Eskew episode style, and is very good.

Eskew has a music to it, if you know how to listen. The percussion beat of thousands of footsteps, the melody in the squealing of the trains overhead. Today, the music of Eskew comes in the form of nine musicians, playing outside my office. My name is David Ward, and I am in Eskew.
Not TMA, but since a lot of Mechs fans go here—this one’s a Mechs/Eskew crossover. Short and simple, mostly David Ward centric, just a little well-written one shot I had to mention because I enjoyed it but it doesn’t have much traffic. Nice portrayal of the Mechs from an outsider’s perspective, and how genuinely strange and frightening they’d come across (especially if you’re already being haunted by and eldritch city). If you like Eskew-style storytelling, check it out!

The Season 1 Villain: Mr. Blackwood
Summary [ A time travelling Martin Blackwood accidentally bullies his past counterpart and a young Jonathan Sims into getting together in order to gang-up on him]
 Yesterday Is Here is a time-travel fix-it fic of the Magnus Archives by CirrusGrey found on AO3 that I highly recommend. It helps emotionally cope with the tragedy of the actual series and it’s very well written.
I have my own ideas on what would happen in the fic if the time travel went slightly different and Martin showed up first, which now lives rent-free in my head as an AU to an AU. I’m hoping by writing it down I can free myself of it’s grip over me. If you don’t want spoilers for the fic, or seasons 1-4 of the Magnus Archives, stop here.
 In the fic Jon and Martin from the Archives have been married and survived the apocalypse together. Both use the Helen’s doors to travel back in time to season 1 of the Magnus Archives and prevent most of the tragedies from happening. Jon uses his spooky Archivist Powers to threaten Elias, extorting him for money and preventing the appocolypse. And both Martin and Jon dispose of the main villains of season 1 and 2.
But some shenanigans happened in Helen’s doors that make it so Jon shows up first and Martin doesn’t show up until two months later. Here’s my idea of what would happen if those positons got reversed.
-The Archival Staff call Future Martin Mr. Blackwood to differentiate him from their present-day Martin. I will also be doing so, from here on out.
-Jon is, of course, skeptical, and keeps insisting that this must be some long lost brother of Martin’s who is trying to scam them (Or even his father, despite Mr. Blackwood not looking much older than Martin). Mr. Blackwood proceeds to list small intimate details about each of them (how they take their tea, things that happened their last birthday. Stuff that would be very essentially Martin to know) but also sounds very impatient the entire time. He does not have time for Jon’s feigned skepticism and denial and does not hide it.
-It becomes clear very quickly to the Archival staff that Mr. Blackwood is a lot meaner than Martin. He doesn’t make tea for people unless he’s trying to corner them to talk to them, He’s willing to kill spiders rather than release them. Murder doesn’t seem that out of the question for him. And while both Martin and Blackwood are big people, Matrin Hunches and keeps his voice soft and tries to seem smaller. Blackwood does none of that and will push his way through people and/or loom sometimes.
-As a result Tim starts jokingly referring to him as the Anti-Martin. When Mr. Blackwood starts mentioning that there should be a Mr. Sims showing up, Tim insists on making a list of traits that he bets  Mr. Sims will have based on him being an “Anti-Jon”. The traits include: Wearing only bright colors, not-giving a fig about archive policy, believing all the statements (even the dumb ones), smiling, being nice to Martin, being social and (on a day where Jon was being particularly annoying) being cool.
-A few of them are totally off the mark, but many of them are actually frighteningly close to the truth.
-He ropes Sasha into it too. They decide together that Sims and Blackwood have a one-sided relationship where Sims is absolutely besotted and Blackwood either barely tollerates him or is seducing him for his Head Archivist pay.
(It’s funny because Jon isn’t making much more than any of the Archival Staff)
-Blackwood is fairly nice to Sasha who is reasonable and listens to relevant threats. Tim appreciates him for confirming and advancing the research he’s done on Robert Smirke and the Circus. But Martin and Jon hate him. He bullies them both in different ways.
-Blackwood keeps trying to convince his younger self to grow a spine, make some boundaries. He keeps trying to tell him that he can’t fix things by being nice to everyone. Martin does not appreciate it.
-Mr. Blackwood will occasionally talk like Martin’s Mum and it makes it hurt more. Not exact sentiments or sentiments but familiar phrasing and tones. Blackwood doesn’t know he’s doing it.
-Meanwhile Blackwood takes away all the “real” statements from Jon (the ones that won’t record on the computer) and spreading them out amongst the archive staff. He insists that reading them will turn Jon into an eldritch creature that feeds on human trauma and gives people nightmares. Jon thinks this is a load of absolute bull. (If you must read them, Jon, at least don’t read them outloud. Type them up or something. Don’t be stupid.)
-Jon’s the type of person who needs to know and asks all the uncomfortable questions, so having someone take away the only real information bothers him. Even if Tim, Sasha and Martin have the information it still bothers him to not know.
-Jon is also really insecure about deserving his job, and desperately trying to prove himself. So having a man burst in and tell him how to do his job stings.
-Mr. Blackwood also isn’t delicate when pointing out Jon’s skepticism is dumb. He says all the things Martin thinks but is too polite to say.
(”I’m sure there’s a very natural reason for Carlos Vittery to be wrapped up in spider webs upon his death”
“Are you serious? Jon, if you keep up this ridiculous denial you’re going to walk yourself right into something’s mouth just to prove a point. Or worse, send someone else into it. And you of all people should know supernatural spiders are dangerous.
“What do you mean, I of all people?”
“I think you know what I mean, Jon.”)
-Jon and Martin actually end up hanging out because they bond over their mutual dislike of Mr. Blackwood.
-Jon defends Martin agains Mr. Blackwood and vice-versa.
-The first time it happens, it’s Jon defending Martin and Mr. Blackwood acts surprised.
-(I don’t know why we should trust you. Even if all this supernatural nonsense is true there’s no reason we should take you’re word on how it works! You barge into the archives telling everyone what to do, fear mongering with tales of secret societies trying to cause the apocalypse, you upset Martin all the time “for his own good, you-”
“-wait, wait wait- Martin?” “When did you start caring about Martin?”
“What do you mean? He’s one of my archival assistants, of course I care about him.”
“Jon, you bully him more often than I do.”
“I-No I don’t.”
“You make it very clear what you think of his work and competence, Jon. And you send him to all the worst assignments. He let’s it happen because he knows he’s not the best at research, and he knows you’re under pressure from Elias, and he really tries not to take it personally, but it hurts him Jon. It builds up and it hurts him, even if he never says it does. So yes, forgive me if I think you’re being a bit hypocritical.”)
-Jon apologizes to Martin after that and really tries to be nicer because he does not like the idea that he’s as bad as Mr. Blackwood. He watches what he says around Martin a lot more closely after that, and keeps an eye on Martin’s reactions.
-Jon will tell Martin that he thinks he’s nothing he’s like Mr. Blackwood. He doesn’t see how they could be the same person. Martin is so caring, and helpful, and kind, and warm, and Blackwood isn’t. Jon is so wrapped up in his frustration that he does not know Martin is blushing as he says this. Martin suddenly has to go make a cup of tea. Right then.
-The next time it’s Martin defending Jon against Blackwood. Blackwood is happy that Martin is starting to assert himself but is exasperated that it’s only occuring because of his own failed attempts to get the archive staff to trust him. He suddenly wants his own Jon to come back so badly so he can tell him how ridiculous this entire situation is. So they can laugh together at how Blackwood advanced their younger counterparts’ relationship progress by at least 3 years by accidentally becoming the villain of their story, so Jon can tease him about it.
-The third time it’s Jon once again defending Martin, saying that Blackwood went too far, that he sounds like Martin’s mother and he made him cry. Mr. Blackwood realizes that, yeah he does absolutely sound like his mum and he has to leave and reasses his actions. He hadn’t realized he was picking up her specific way of critisizing-well-himself. It’s just how he talked to himself in his own head- which- well- which wasn’t great.
-Jon is so surprised that he managed to actually get one-up on Mr. Blackwood that he takes everyone out for drinks and insists on paying. Which is a nice distraction for Martin. 
-It also, Blackwood notices, means Jon is getting closer to his archive staff and hanging out with them. It gives him a bittersweet hapiness. He’s so happy that they’re all closer in this timeline, that he managed to force Jon into socializing and Martin and Jon to get close. But he realizes he did it by being the outsider and interloper that they’re defending against, and he’s not quite part of this new group of the archive staff. He’s happy for them, just lonely. Even Sasha and Tim, who he gets along with more than Jon or Martin, are wary to trust him. He’s not telling them everything. He has to fight against Elias without the aid of spooky Eye powers and he’s unsure of when Elias is listening, so he’s not mentioning everything. He’s not telling them who killed Gertrude Robinson. He’s being evasive on the reasons he does not trust Elias, and about what power succeded at causing the apocalypse.
-As the days go by with no sign of His Jon/ Mr. Sim’s coming back his old connection to The Lonely intensifies and he becomes able to turn invisible and go by unnoticed again. The archive staff notice that he becomes spookier and sadder and- slightly less human and it decreases their trust in him.

“What is it?”
Jon levels a suspicious glare down at the fluffy blob comfortably stretched out in the middle of the overstuffed break room couch.
Tim blinks owlishly at him from behind his mug of tea. “A...rabbit?”
“Yes, but are you sure it’s a rabbit?” Jon asks insistently. “Not a—a spirit, or...an animated doll, or a clown in disguise or something?”
Sighing, Tim sets his tea down on the counter. “Look, I get the whole ‘suspicious of us being murderers’ thing—no I don’t, actually, but that’s beside the point—it. is. a rabbit.” For a good measure, he walks over to sit on one side of the rabbit, reaching a hand out to the little guy’s fluffy head. If a rabbit could smile, he suspects this one would be doing so as it leans up into his hand.
“No fleas or ticks...or worms, so it’s not some Jane Prentiss Pet Sematary crossover, I promise—” Tim rolls his eyes, “—the veterinarian confirmed as much when I brought the poor thing in. Out of the mud and the rain of the gutter,” he adds, not even attempting to hide the guilt-trip. He wishes Martin were here, with his ridiculously effective puppy-dog eyes.
Tim knows this is Jon he’s talking to, but surely even he can’t be that cold-hearted. He rather thinks that Jon will enjoy not being alone anymore down here during all his late nights. If he’d let himself, surely Jon would enjoy having company in the form of a teeny tiny creature that can’t and won’t harm him—which, uh, certainly is not why he’s lying about his current flat not permitting pets, no siree.
“...Fine. Whatever.” Jon points an accusing finger at him. “But we’re not keeping it,” he stresses. “The moment you find it a different home, it goes. The moment.”
“Sure thing, boss,” Tim chirps, although as he begins a staring contest with the rabbit’s curious red eyes, he has no intention of actually doing as Jon says.
Martin chooses this moment to walk through the door. His eyes light up. “Aw, is that a rabbit?”
“No, this does not mean you’re allowed to bring in more strays,” Jon snaps.
The light in Martin’s eyes fades. “Okay,” he says mournfully as he crouches to pet the rabbit, sulking.

“So what should we name him?” Tim asks Jon when the Head Archivist comes into the break room the next morning.
“Oh—my—” Jon startles where he stands by the counter, attempting to make himself some toast with the Archive’s horrible fifteen-year-old toaster—toast that now splatters across the floor. Somehow in his sleep-deprived stupor he must’ve missed Tim sitting on the couch with a white rabbit on his head. He never seems to really notice Tim, but at this point it’s fine enough; Tim has accepted that the guy has impossibly poor taste.
The rabbit clambers down from Tim’s shoulders, jumping off of the couch and padding over to investigate the new human(?) and the mess he made.
“How about Thumper?” Tim puzzles aloud, stretching leisurely and acting as if he doesn’t notice Jon frantically scrubbing up raspberry jam and trying to avoid the rabbit’s investigative snuffles all in one. “No, no...that’s too cliché.”
“I really don’t see the point in naming it when it shouldn’t be here more than a few weeks,” Jon comments, shooing the animal in question away before it can try to lick up any jam.
“Maybe Joe?” Tim continues loudly, as if he hadn’t heard the other. When the rabbit ambles back over to him, he scoops them up, pressing their noses together. “Ligma?” He shakes his head at the rabbit. “No, no. We need to have more sophistication as we go about this.”
“You could do with applying that sophistication to your work,” comes the grumbled retort.
“What?”
“Nothing.” Jon abruptly turns to burn another piece of bread in the toaster.

“How about Marshmallow?”
“What on Earth—” Jon shrieks, jumping in his desk chair, and a sheaf of papers is sent flying around the office.
“The rabbit. Should we call him ‘Marshmallow’?” Tim smiles as innocently as he can manage, standing out in the hall with his head peeping into his boss’ office. “Marshie for short?”
“I am in the middle of a statement!” Jon sputters. “Get out!”
“Okay, okay....” Tim fluidly shrugs his shoulders. “What about ‘Bob’?”
“Out!”
But Tim continues to pop into Jon’s office unannounced throughout the day, tossing out name suggestions. He even manages to rope Martin into doing it too, and notes with savage delight that between the two of them and his work, Jon doesn’t get much more than a moment to wallow rest for the remainder of the day.
Between the two of them Tim and Martin manage to compile a surprisingly long list of names:
Snowball,
Posy (Martin is partial to this one because he thinks it’s cute),
Bungen Leitner,
John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt (“is that too American of a reference for a fanfic taking place in the UK?” “what?” “what?”),
the Bunholding,
Michael (Jon is especially averse to that one for some reason),
Cottonball,
Fluffy Bastard (Tim’s own favorite),
Bugs Bunny,
Eldritch Horror (Tim tosses that one in as a joke; no way the rabbit that eats his own shit is some kind of otherworldly being),
Big Bungus (“it’s a play off Big Chungus!” “d’you seriously think anyone else here even knows what memes are”), and
the Vampiric Count Sir Maximillianus-Who-Is-Also-A-Werebun
(Despite badgering Sasha multiple times in an attempt to get her thoughts on the matter, the only name she offers up is “Dinner”, which makes Martin cry, so that one is out.)
None of the names quite seem to fit the little white puffball that has now taken over the realm of their break room, however—so Tim and Martin find themselves going back to the drawing board. They reluctantly leave the Institute at the end of the day, still without having decided upon a name.

“JON JUNIOR!” Martin screeches excitedly the next morning as they’re congregating once more in the break room, zombie-like before their tea and mid-morning snack time (primary schools don’t get all the fun, okay).
Jon and Sasha startle, and for once even Tim himself jumps. The rabbit doesn’t seem to care much where he is, nibbling at some hay in his corner litter box.
“I—what?” Jon asks, flabbergasted, although he manages to not drop his toast this time. Character development.
“We should name him Jon Jr! After you!” Martin explains eagerly.
“Absolutely not,” Jon tries to say, but before he can finish, Tim is jumping in.
“I think that is an excellent idea,” he says, grinning broadly. “Thoughts, Sasha?”
“I’m not emotionally invested in this.” Sasha shrugs, uncaring. “I’m going back to my desk.” She takes her drink and walks out of the room, letting the door slam shut behind her.
“All right, since Sasha doesn’t care, I’ll decide her vote for her,” Tim says, carefully containing his glee. “So that’s three votes for and one against, then. Majority rules.”
“What? No!” John protests, but Tim is too busy looking at the rabbit for confirmation.
“What do you think, little guy?” He walks over, bends down, and lightly boops the rabbit’s nose. “Are you a Jon Jr?”
The rabbit twitches his nose in agreement and poops.
“Well then!” Tim stands, clapping his hands together. “That’s been decided upon.”
No, it hasn’t,” Jon insists, but Tim cares little for his boss’ objections. He’ll accept his fate as Jon Senior eventually.

To Tim’s utter surprise and fascination, it happens sooner than later.
Jon, Tim quickly realizes, is a lot like the one dad who says “no dog” and then ends up loving the dog more than he loves his own children.
Despite his initial objections, the daft fool ends up getting caught up in Jon Jr’s big, innocent, rabbit-y gaze (worse than even Martin’s puppy-dog eyes, they conclude gravely), and by the end of the day Friday Jon has announced that he supposes the rabbit can stay with him over weekends and holidays.
“We’re still not keeping him,” Jon reminds them all, even as the rabbit gathered in his arms, giving his nose kisses and knocking his glasses askew, says otherwise.
He gets caught trying to sneak the rabbit into his office on more than one occasion, but Martin raises a fuss about it.
(“He’s all of ours! Jon Jr is our department’s mascot now,” Martin protests defiantly. “You can’t take him away from the rest of us.”
“Yeah,” Tim adds, mostly just to stir up drama—he doesn’t particularly care one way or another. “You can’t just swoop him up and file him away like one of your statements.”
“Just don’t let it get out and chew at my electronics,” Sasha says, distractedly typing something on her phone, probably to that weird new boyfriend.)
To stave off the imminent coup, Jon Jr becomes an officially-declared resident of the break room. He slowly amasses chub around his middle and a cardboard kingdom of bunny toys, houses, blankets, and treats. A rabbit could want for nothing more.
And perhaps—perhaps a human could want for nothing more, too, Tim thinks as he looks down at the figure curled up on the sofa, rabbit nestled against his chest.
He doesn’t love the man, not by a long, long shot—doesn’t even particularly like him half the time—but Tim can’t deny that the scene is adorable. And, regardless of his very vocal protests, Jon Jr may very well be what Jon Sr needs to finally process things and move the hell on with life.
Tim smiles grimly. It’s about damn time.
He quietly closes the door to the room and heads back towards the Archives. He’ll leave Jon to wake himself up.
(And to discover for himself that Jon Jr has peed on his pants leg.)

Of course, this is the Archive we’re talking about, so naturally the peace is abruptly shattered, and everything goes horribly, horribly wrong.
Tim isn’t entirely certain what happens or why, but all of a sudden Sasha isn’t really Sasha, and he and Jon have gotten backed up and cornered in the tunnels as this not-really-Sasha stalks towards them, predictably with the intent to kill, just like the rest of the spooks they are so lucky to deal with.
Tim and Jon Sr slowly back away until they hit a dead end. Meanwhile, Jon Jr licks at Tim’s arm—he’d been scooped up as they ran into the tunnels, Tim doesn’t entirely know why—and despite the fact that they are most probably about to, y’know, die, the little kisses almost feel strangely reassuring.
The thing-that-is-not-Sasha cackles, her—their?—its?—voice distorted and echoing throughout the tunnels. It stalks towards them.
All of a sudden, Jon Jr wriggles loose and leaps smoothly down onto the ground. He scampers in front of Tim and Jon, heading towards bitch-give-me-my-Sasha-back.
“No! Get back here!” Tim hisses at the rabbit, even though he knows it’s pointless. He hates to admit it, but he’s becoming rather fond of Jon Jr, even if Tim mostly brought him in to piss off and totally not help Jon. Jon—who, speaking of, seems to be equally fond now, judging by the deflating tire of a terrified squeak he makes, and the adorable immature grabby arms he makes at the little bugger.
“Junior,” Jon calls out, sounding like a toddler who’d just been told Santa wasn’t real (he is, they have the statements to prove it, he is). And Tim wants to laugh, albeit hysterically. The first time he sees his brick wall of a superior cry and it’s over a rabbit, and he’s not even going to have time to gloat over it because they’re about to die. “No! You’re going to—”
Jon Jr stops and sits in front of wholly-absolutely-totally-not-Sasha-what-the-fuck, who looks down at him, bemused through its murderous bloodlust.
The rabbit lifts a dainty paw up to his mouth, and suddenly—suddenly it’s twisting and huge, towering up to the ceiling of the tunnel, its skin hairless and tinted a sickly, glowing gray, with five, six, seven...a whole lot more limbs than a rabbit is supposed to have.
The not-rabbit unhinges its now meters-long jaw and snaps up the creature.
Tim and Jon stare at each other, wide-eyed.
There is a loud gulping sound, then a deafening crack, and suddenly there is a very normal white rabbit sitting in front of them again, carefully cleaning one paw with a very normal pink tongue.
“Wh—” Tim chokes on his own words.
The holy-shit-it-really-is-an-eldritch-horror-after-all stretches, yawns, and flops over in a dead sleep.
“...We’re keeping the rabbit,” Jon says faintly.
“I—yeah.” Tim nods, light-headed. “We’re keeping the rabbit.”

Jon Jr the rabbit-slash-eldritch-abomination gets a very hearty dinner of romaine lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumber peels that night.

Behold. What very well may be the stupidest thing I have ever written. Ahem. Did I say stupidest? I meant most brilliant. Clearly I meant it’s the most brilliant thing I have ever written. Obviously.

<3 This almost made me cry tbh I would LOVE to talk about my AU. So I started out having the idea after listening to Gerry’s statement about how there’s no powers of “love or hope or...indigestion or anything like that” and my brain instantly said But What If There Was? And I figured the Usher Foundation would be as good an institute to explore that as any because 1) I’m American and it’s easier for me to write like an American than it is for me to write about the UK and 2) I could explore things without canon constraints on characters. I have an inspo tag for the AU here.
Basically, I love American urban legends. I love southern and midwest gothic. I thought about how I could apply things like mysteries, creepypastas, urban legends, and cryptids to the 14 Fears Formula and I started planning. There’s blurring of the lines, just like there are with the Fears, and I call them Hopes. (I know it’s cheesy. The whole AU is cheesy. Let me live.) What is a person afraid of and what could help them instead? The easiest example is the Dark. What helps combat fear of the dark? The Light. So I take a statement and I formulate it around a Being that helps save someone from a Fear. And maybe it doesn’t work sometimes, maybe the fears still take and feed on people, the Usher Foundation is a Beholding stronghold after all; but the point of the AU is that there are things that Try To Help. (And yes, I know that a lot of the point of TMA is that through terror we have to be the ones to reach out and help each other I know okay. Let me live.) 
Roanoke Branch: 
Luke Thomas is the first person that you meet. He’s a little bit of season 1 Jon, derisive of the thought of using something as low tech as a tape recorder to transcribe a statement, but he’s also a bit more how I imagine Sasha would have been as head Archivist. Capable, curious, a bit too nosy. He’s not the Head of the Archives or anything fancy, he’s just what I’ve dubbed as Lead Scribe. He’s tasked with transcribing some of the more recent statements as well as checking on the team to make sure everyone has working equipment. He’s basically got as much power as the kid the teacher appoints to look after everyone while they step out to talk to another teacher. 
Then there’s Jenna Higgins. Jenna works with older, more delicate statements. She’s the one that gives Luke the idea to work with tape recorder because she has to use one. Her laptop doesn’t work in the climate controlled room with the older documents. She’s sweet and smart, always quick to give a compliment or advice if needed. She worked in a library before applying to the Usher Foundation and eventually Luke will read her statement. If the Eye is Seeing and Knowing and Not Doing then there has to be a being that Applies Knowledge and that’s what has saved her. She has no fear of secrets being discovered, or of knowing too much, because she knows knowledge exists to be applied to the world. 
Julian Matthews and Samantha Thorn are Journeyman Scribes (researchers). They work with cursed objects and check the validity of statements for the Scribes. Julian has worked for the Foundation for almost 20 years, Samantha has only been there for 1. 
Brent and Michael are assistants that pop in on and off as needed. Brent works in the library and Michael is an office assistant. 
The Roanoke Branch covers a majority of Virginia and north up to Maine. Right now their statements include: a Black Dog that protects a cemetery from the Lonely, a forest of Moth Creatures that worship an orb that looks like the moon, something that is Not A Deer, the Jersey Devil, and a man with a head like a bird.
Dallas Branch:
I live in Texas so y’all know I’m gonna have fun doing urban legends from where I grew up. The Dallas Branch covers part of the South namely Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. 
Savannah James is their head scribe. She grew up in the Panhandle of Texas and was marked by the Vast (and if you’ve ever seen rows and rows of cotton fields with nothing but that and the open empty sky you’d understand), but managed to escape due to something in the field that held her down and kept her from staring at the sky. Something that said “you are part of this Earth and you are not alone”. Her girlfriend’s name is Jocelyn and she stops by sometimes to bring lunch and occasionally comments on a statement.
Matthew Johnson and Monica Perez are two other scribes that work on older statements. Monica is bilingual and will transcribe statements both in Spanish and in English. Some statements are even taken down in Mexico and transferred up to this office.
Sarah Hernandez is a Journeyman Scribe and fairly new to anything paranormal. She’s enormously skeptical to the point of anger until she meets an aspect of the Stranger and manages to survive it. 
Their statements include: The Goatman’s Bridge, a jackalope, a swamp with only a single alligator, The Tall Men, and a cotton harvester that turns on by itself. 
I’ll do my absolute best to keep to actual cryptids and urban legends. I will try to be sensitive and avoid things that may be involved in Native American culture and do my research on things I think are cryptids before writing the statement. I don’t know if I’ll ever finish this project because I work full time and I have a dozen other WIPs that I work on off and on, but they are fun statements to write. Eventually I’d like to have branches and statements for all across the US. I’d love to do a statement over Things In The Corn because god are those always good urban legends. 
(And this is just a fun note: There’s nothing that really stops The End because death comes for us all, but I call its Hope “Absolution” which has to do with freedom from guilt or sin and it my mind it’s the thing that allows you to see death not as something to fear but as something to embrace.)

It starts a bit before canon and it's basically where events have just been set ahead a couple years
So Jon starts being the Archivist in like 2013 or so
And like Gerry is still alive at that point
But Michael is already part of the Distortion and has been for a little while
And it doesn't make everything earlier, just time that Gertrude dies.
And Jon and Gerry start dating in 2013 because I said so and also they probably met once Jon became Archivist and I don't have to explain myself to you

Michael meets Jon yadda yadda
Michael being the flirt it is flirts with our two best boys
And they all develop romantic feeling for each other

And Jon forces Gerry to go to a doctor for his headaches (I need to look up if brain tumors cause headaches, I would think they do)
And they discover his brain tumor
And boom! Gerry doesn't die at a depressingly young age.
But he does have to a lot of medical hoo-ha
And Michael and Jon take care if him because they are good partners
And both of them respect Jon's boundaries and the fact that he's asexual and if I see another fic where someone either forces Jon to have sex or he chooses to do it even though it's canon that he does not like sex and I know some asexuals do have sex but it was explicitly stated that Jon does not and you can catch these hands
And they use Michael's door to go on adventures
And Jon becomes less human quicker but Michael and Gerry support him and let him take statements from bad people (Which is an idea taken from @bro-im-looking and @shaeydyrllah you two are amazing)
And it's just amazing and the archive staff have no clue about any of this

And it's just super funny when two years after he's been in a committed relationship with two 'people' they find out and are just super surprised and Jon's just like "They've literally both been in my office. Several times. I've told you about my exes. Tim, you've talked to Georgie. There's no way she didn't tell you any stupid stories from uni"

Ignorance - TMA fanfic  [spoilers 161]
Notes: I haven’t written fanfiction in years so my writing has gotten quite rusty. This was just a little thought experiment and is nothing special.
Warning: This story is a the Magnus Archives fanfiction and contains spoilers for episode 161 Dwelling and parts of the episode as a transcript. 
Summary: AU - Sasha is promoted to be head archivist of the magnus institute, gets surprised by her friends and finds a tape by her predecessor Gertrude Robinson
Ignorance
 She was kneeling over some boxes, not sure where to start or what to do next. Her look fell on the desk and not for the first time today Sasha wondered what happened to her predecessor. Elias had only mentioned that she passed away in the line of duty, which was an odd thing to say for a person working in an archive. Gertrude Robinson had been a feisty, little lady. All the more it surprised Sasha that she apparently had just passed away like that.
 She sighed and looked around. Sasha could see rows and rows of shelves filled with files. Next to them there were boxes that were also stuffed to the brim with them. Everything was dusty and disorganized. There didn’t seem to be a proper filing system or any system whatsoever. Sasha sighed again.
 “Where do I start?”, she murmured to herself, picking up a random file from one of the shelves and glancing over it as if it had answers or instructions for how she could do her new job. Obviously that wasn’t the case. Instead it spoke of some supposedly supernatural encounter in Edinburgh.
Sasha had spent hours looking through the room and trying to find anything that helped her figure out Gertrude’s system or what she had been working on last. So far without luck.
 She wasn’t sure why Elias had chosen her to be the next archivist. He had said something along the lines of her familiarity with artifact storage being advantageous to her new position and that she would have an easy time familiarizing herself with the archives due to her expertise. However, it wasn’t as if she had any experience in how to run an archive.
 Having worked in artifact storage for a while maybe helped her because she already knew about some of the supernatural and esoteric stuff that the archives dealt with. Looking at the mountains of statements that had apparently not been filed properly in years - she wasn’t sure how her 3 months of testing supposedly haunted things would come in handy here.  
 Thinking about that conversation with Elias made a shiver run down her spine. Sasha considered herself quite skilled at reading people and something about the head of the Magnus Institute had just been… for a lack of a better word, off. She couldn’t pinpoint what it had been though. Something about his piercing eyes and his posh smile had been unsettling.
 Sasha jumped when the door was ripped open. “How’s is going, boss?”, Tim said grinning teasingly, hand still on the door handle while casually leaning against the frame.
“Tim!”, she retorted exasperated, “you scared me!”
He cackled to himself. “I never knew you were that jumpy, boss.”
She smacked him on the shoulder, her heartbeat starting to normalize again. “Stop calling me that.”
“Is that an order?” He leaned back and managed to dodge out of the way before she could smack him again. He then continued: “Quite dark and musty down here. Jon will feel right at home.”
 He picked up a file from one of the boxes next to him and blew the dust of it. They both coughed a little. “Oh, spooky casefiles, Scully. What exactly do we do with those?”
Sasha sighed. “From what Elias said, I think we’re supposed to organize this?”, she gestured vaguely to the boxes and shelves behind them, “and also investigate any weird things connected to the cases. Maybe.”
 Tim followed her gesture and looked back at her with raised eyebrows. When she shrugged, he returned his attention to the file in his hand, leaned closer to it and squinted slightly. He then flung the file on top of another pile that was in the corner next to them. “Those are handwritten, Sasha. No one will ever come down here and look for information.”
“Well…”, she started and walked back into the room. Sasha picked up her bag and pulled a laptop out of it. “I thought we could digitize the statements.”, she finished with a shrug.
 “Type all of that?”, Tim said with an incredulous look behind himself.
“Actually I thought about recording them. Audios are helpful for accessibility.”
“That’s a lot of work.”
“It pays the rent, Tim.”
They both heard a noise from the corridor and Tim leaned out of the doorframe to look towards the source. The broad smile was back on his face. “It pays the rent but I’m sure the dusty old files can wait until tomorrow.”
 Tim pushed the door further open with his foot before giving her a thumbs up, a smile, and vanishing into the corridor. Sasha then heard muttered voices and she could make out a whispered countdown. “3…2…1… Go…. SURPRISE!”
 Tim reappeared in the door, pushing and pulling Martin as well as Jon with him.
Martin beamed at her. He was holding a plate in his hands, on which Sasha spotted a cake with blue icing. It had Congratulations Sasha written on it in red letters. Behind him Jon looked a little flustered, clutching a bottle of champagne in both hands but he was also smiling  at her. Tim seemed to have magically spawned glasses and plates from behind his back.
 Sasha smiled at her friends and felt all the uncertainties of the past couple of days wash away from her. “You guys… that’s so sweet of you.” She rushed forward and pulled everyone into a hug, even Jon who was always quite reluctant about physical affection. She felt him stiffen but he eventually eased into the embrace.
 “Had to make sure our new boss feels welcome on her first day.”, Tim grinned and shoved Jon playfully. “T’was this grumpy, old man’s idea.”
 “We all came up with it.”, Jon quickly said defensively. Sasha rolled her eyes and laughed.
“Thank you very much, all of you.”
Martin placed the plate on the desk and nudged her. “You have to blow out the candles and make a wish.”
“It’s not her birthday, Martin.”, Jon muttered quietly in a reprimanding voice.
“I.. I know that. I was just thinking that it couldn’t harm, you know… for good luck.”
“It’s also quite ridiculous for an adult to be that superstitious and believe in…”, Jon continued but Sasha quickly interjected: “I think it’s a very lovely thought, Martin. A little extra luck can’t be bad.”
 Looking at her friends and colleagues, it was easy to find something to wish for. Sasha smiled at them and closed her eyes while taking a deep breath. Happiness for all of us, she quietly wished and blew out the candles when they could hear a “Knock, knock”, coming from the open door.
 Elias stood in the frame, looking posh and flawless as always in his three piece suit. “I wondered where I would find everyone. I see you’re already breaking archive regulations by using an open fire source. We don’t want the archives to burn down on our first day, do we?”
 “Ah, double-boss.”, Tim beamed, “no worries. We have everything under control. Jon checked the locations of the fire extinguishers earlier at least three times.” He clapped Jon on the back. “Do you want some cake?”
 Elias smiled charmingly: “I wanted to check how Sasha is settling in. There is nothing more important to me than the happiness of my employees. But since I am here already, I might as well…”
 Martin handed plates to everybody and only nearly dropped Jon’s clumsily. Tim opened the Champaign and filled everyone’s glasses while chatting idly. The atmosphere was nice and Sasha felt very warm inside. She had been worried, that Jon or Tim were jealous of her promotion but so far they seemed honestly supportive of her. They had been good friends for a while now. She was glad that Elias let her chose who she wanted to have as archival assistants for the research involved with her new position. Jon, Tim and Martin would be a great help.
 “To Sasha, the new head archivist of the Magnus Institute.”, Tim offered and raised his glass. The others joined in. “To Sasha!”
“I also know that Jon wanted to invite us all to lunch to celebrate.”, Tim continued and winked at Sasha who tried to hide her laughter.
“What? Tim, I never said… I mean…”, Jon replied in a confused voice, looked back and forth between Tim and Sasha. He sighed and rubbed his temple. “Fine. But you owe me coffee for a week, Tim.”
“Seems hardly fair. You consume coffee like a black hole.”
They started leaving the room all the while Tim and Jon kept bickering with one another.
 Martin looked back. “Are you coming, Sasha?”
“I’ll be there in a minute. I have to put my stuff away still.”
“All right. I’ll catch up with the others and tell them. Shall I order a coffee for you already?”
Sasha nodded: “That would be great, Martin. Thank you.”
“All right. Don’t be too long. You know how Jon and Tim get when they are in a small place together for too long.”
 Sasha remembered the last time they went for lunch together quite well and couldn’t help but laugh at that. “I’ll be quick. I promise.”
 The door fell into the lock behind Martin, when Sasha heard another door being closed right behind her. She whisked around in shock. There was no other door in this room and yet she was sure that she had heard one.
 Out of the corner of her eyes she spotted what looked to be an old tape recorder and a note on her desk. Those hadn’t been there before. A shiver ran down her spine and with rising panic in her stomach, she considered her options shortly. Her curiosity was bigger than her initial fear, so she stepped closer to the desk and carefully took the note.
 It only read: Listen now! He’s busy.
 Sasha didn’t understand the note. Who was busy? Maybe one of the boys had put that tape recorder on the desk without her noticing? Maybe it was a message one of them had recorded and was too shy to give her personally. Oh, she really hoped that none of them had a crush on her. That would make working together so much more complicated.
 Her initial panic and fear had calmed down. It was probably just another surprise by the boys. An old tape recorder and a message - how retro. If she had to guess, the message was probably from Jon.
*click*
Right. If you’re listening to this then it is likely that - no. Let’s not beat around the bush. If you’re listening to this, it means I’m dead and you have been chosen to be my replacement as head archivist. Hopefully this means you, Sasha, but if someone else is hearing this and Elias has made a different choice - for some reason - then these words are still very much intended for you.
 Before I continue, it is very important to be absolutely clear: This is not a joke. Nor is it any sort of prank or game. Your colleagues have not convinced me to record this as an attempt to haze you. This is completely serious and very, very important for you to know. If it is you I am talking to, Sasha, hopefully your background in artifact storage will lend a certain degree of credence to my words. But others may have to take it on trust. All I can do is assure you that I am deadly serious.
 So, the first thing you have to do is to accept that you are in great danger and will be for the rest of your life. There are now things that will actively try to kill you due to your new role as archivist. And Elias has plans for you that are little better. You will also be unable to relinquish the position or quit the institute, finding you are supernaturally compelled to remain. In fact, it occurs to me that attempting to do so is probably the easiest and quickest way to establish the truth of what I am telling you. So I suggest you do so at the earliest possible opportunity.
 Things you need to be aware of: There exist in our world supernatural entities of incredible power that reflect and feed on the fears of all living creatures but most commonly humans. Many consider them gods; and while I believe that is far too simplistic a comparison, for our purposes here it is perhaps the most useful shorthand. They do not rule our world but they do exercise considerable power which they generally manifest in the form of monstrous beings that spread further fear; or incarnations, those humans who have willingly, though not always knowingly, chosen to take on the power of these entities.
 You, unfortunately, have unwittingly made the decision to become one of those incarnations, for the Institute serves a being known variously as The Eye, It knows you, The Beholding, The Ceaseless Watcher. It is the fear of being watched, and judged, and having all your secrets known. The institute serves as a way for it to harvest the fear of the other entities, dragging out the suffering of those who’ve come to give statements, and claiming their terror.
 But… there is another part of being the archivist. These beings - these gods of fear; their followers believe that they have… rituals, grant projects which, if successful, would allow them to enter our world, reshaping it in unthinkable ways, molding it into a dimension where terror is as natural as gravity.
 You are now one such ritual. I do not know the exact details of it but be wary of whatever Elias asks you to do. Oh… yes… on the subject of Elias - trust nothing he says. He was originally known as Jonah Magnus, the founder of this institute, and I have known him also as James Wright, the previous head of the institute. He has certain abilities of clairvoyance, which allow him to perceive out of any eye, real or symbolic. So be wary. Play ignorant as long as you can while you expand your own research.
 I’ve managed to keep the archive in the state of chaos for decades, as I believe his plan would benefit from their organization. But I leave that to your judgement. Certainly, the longer he is ignorant of how much you know the better.
 Above all else, be ready. There are many things out there, loyal to other powers which know your importance to the Eye and will want you dead. You are entering a new world, a place I’ve lived for most of my life. A place…. a place that will often demand a high price from you. Pay it without hesitation because one way or another, the world is now on your shoulders.
 I wish I had more time to explain it to you but time is short and hopefully my actions tonight will assure this tape never needs to see the light of day. But if you are hearing it, then… good luck. Do what you have to do.

Sasha barely managed to press the button and stop the tape recorder. Her heart was racing, she could feel her pulse hammering in her ears. Her hands were shaking.
 She slowly moved her gaze from the tape recorder on the desk to the wall behind her where she had heard the second door being shut. Was she being watched right now?
 Gertrude was dead. That had been her voice and she had warned her to not trust Elias. And that there are entities of fear that wanted her dead as well. Sasha knew Gertrude a little and knew for a fact that she wouldn’t joke about these things. Or joke about anything.
 Sasha’s eyes were still fixed on the wall but she couldn’t see a secret door or any signs of a passageway. She pressed her hand on her mouth and bit into it. The pain calmed her nerves a little. Sasha didn’t have to try and quit. There had been things in artifact storage that were dark and bad, one of the reasons why she had stopped working there after only three months.
 Still gnawing on her finger she turned back, now facing her desk again. Parts of the cake were still there, as well as the dirty plates and glasses. Panic started to rise in her stomach: she had to tell the others, she had to warn them.
 Maybe if they worked together on this, they could work something out. Jon was smart, Tim had connections, Martin was creative and she…. Sasha considered her options for a second. She thought back to some of her interactions with Gertrude and automatically stood up straighter. She put the tape recorder in her bag, used one of the matches that were still lying on the desk and burnt the note. After that she marched out of the room and closed the door behind her.
 Before leaving the institute she pushed all of the new information, fears and uncertainties in a corner of her brain and put on a big smile while hurrying towards the cafe and greeting her friends and Elias.
 Sasha was ready to kick some ass but first - ignorance…

meta on media consumption as beholding, and the creation of the conservator role, based on conversations with @hdtvtits​. content warning, as always, for addiction, compulsive / obsessive behavior, aggressive hoarding, and implied terminal illness, all of the eldritch variety. also allusions to real-life hollywood dramas, though nothing remotely specific is discussed in this post.
foreword: this is just the first part of a bunch of meta i’ll likely end up posting on why levi is what they are and why their beholding manifests the way it does, because like... for secrets and the underbelly of film production i have a lot to say but a lot to source as well. but there are a few things i want to address in this post, namely: what the eye feeds off of, whether or not levi is feeding the eye in their media consumption ( and how ), and how it ultimately serves the eye’s purposes to have this be levi’s method of feeding. this probably won’t even be my last post on the subject as i keep sort of logicking out the way that beholding works and how it can manifest. it’s important to me though that it exist and function outside of just what happens in the institute ( which is proven in the statements ), mostly because fear entities are global and primal and jonny said that the story really is britain-centric. now, media consumption isn’t particularly groundbreaking; it addresses a more american culture, but that’s still western-centric and sort of ‘typical’ of europe and america, though i will say that european filmmaking as an institution is... different. it has its own history and quirks. hollywood is its own beast. someday i’ll make a post on levi’s judaism and how that interacts with beholding and manifests as more than their aesthetic, because they haven’t even used their ayin hara on this blog yet though it’s a ( minor ) power they possess, but that deserves its own post. ANYWAYS. with that said.
what does the eye feed off of? the eye doesn’t just function based off a primal fear, it has a drive that it imbues its servants with: “it is the manifestation of the fear of being watched, exposed, followed, of having secrets known, but also the drive to know and understand, even if your discoveries might destroy you.” i think that most of the entities function in a similar way, with the things they inspire and feed off of on the one hand, and avatars with a desire to evoke that fear in the other; i.e., avatars create food to feed their entity, and if they don’t, the entity devours them instead. that’s pretty basic knowledge. ( i also have stuff to say about entities consuming themselves because every time claire says autocannibalism i go absolutely hog wild about it but that’s for another day. ) there are, then, multiple ways that an avatar can go about gathering fear for its entity, but what sets the eye apart from others, i believe, is that it doesn’t need to directly cause the fear it consumes -- though i think that it finds the fear of being watched more filling than just watching other people be afraid, it can still ‘survive’ off of that. this is where eye shit starts to get confusing and it’s why these posts are so longwinded and involve me talking myself in circles, because the eye both has a specific fear that it’s linked to and can devour other people’s experiences of fear that it did not cause, yes even before the apocalypse. that’s just how jon feeds for the majority of the series. for a good long while, he’s not going out and getting statements himself; and even when he does, he’s double dipping on both the fear they convey to him about their experiences ( knowledge gained ) and the fear that this man is pulling information out of them ( secrets exposed ). 
but that’s jon and we’re not talking about jon, we’re talking about levi, and my ever-evolving thesis on voyeurism in / and media. 
so what does an eye avatar need to do, exactly, to eat? it needs to accumulate knowledge, that’s the baseline that it can survive off of -- knowledge of the other entities is best, but i don’t know that it’s a requirement... and i don’t know if it’s not! i am going to make the call that eye avatars can survive off of just hoarding information because the eye isn’t super picky and wants to know everything anyways, but not feeding off of fear for a long time is going to leave the avatar really weak. and for an eye avatar to develop its powers and grow, it needs to take statements directly, or else give other people the distinct feeling of being observed against their will. the more people it feeds off of as a result of its own actions, the more powerful it becomes. that said, i don’t think this is common, which is why watchers ( heads of institutes ) have set up these systems where they’re generating food for themselves on two axes simultaneously: fear of people who give statements, and fear of people who have to work at their institutes ( either taking statements or working directly under the eye ). that just sort of accumulates power upwards within eye bureaucracies, though the archivists who take and sort the statements are also going to become remarkably powerful if they lean into their role.
( also side note: these systems work for the english, american, and chinese institutes, but there are ways for beholding avatars to thrive outside of them, and again someday i’m going to post about oral traditions and the ability to craft stories in different regions of beholding that feed the eye. but i need to do research first and we’re talking about levi! )
here’s the thing... levi is not an archivist. levi is not powerful. levi does not have a strong connection to beholding. they worship it, but fanaticism does not equal feeding, sadly, and the role they’ve been given is not one that pushes them to go and gather statements for themselves. they have taken read and statements at afi, because wyatt was raising them into an avatar, but, though conservators and archivists can overlap in the real world, they ( in my word of god for this blog’s canon and the monster i made up ) are two very different things under the eye. essentially, conservators serve archivists ( and watchers ) by witnessing, recording, and playing back statements that archivists can then maneuver through. the more experienced the conservator, the more they can shift the camera, allowing the archivist to comb through statements in detail and pull the knowledge that they want from them. remember that the beholding grants knowledge, not understanding, and while that may be fine for the eye, sometimes its ‘human’ servants need to put the pieces together in order to advance its plans.
the conservator is a relatively new position within beholding, because it does function like a film camera. i think that, in other times, places, and cultures, there were similar avatars who filled a similar role, but it wasn’t the same. the conservator really is a miskatonic / american experiment to help the institute delve into the information it already possessed. for one example of how conservators are useful, consider what happened with sasha: the archivist had his voice recordings of her, because it can’t effect magnetic tape, but jon the person still had her wiped completely from his memory. that wouldn’t happen to a conservator, because all of their memories are converted into (meta)physical tape stock. they are a lockbox that cannot be opened or altered unless you’re a more powerful beholding avatar. ( the limitation here is that they only have so much storage space, they will need to expunge some memories to store more; though those memories can be kept in physical containers, film stock obviously degrades and is a very unstable and extremely flammable medium; their body will also internally decompose to make room for more data and that is a painful process that eventually renders the conservator just a storage without any ability to function beyond sitting still and replaying witnessed / read events. )
we’ve established that levi feeds normally. they take statements, they are present in an archive, they’re hearing the scary stories. finally, finally on to why levi consumes media and how levi consumes media, because the one is intrinsically linked to the other. let me start by saying that just watching television or films does not a beholding avatar make. yes you are watching, but the distinction is in whether you are passively or actively viewing. and the power that is drawn from someone zoning out and being addicted to passively consuming media does not go to the eye. that is neither a fear of being observed ( for the one watching or for the actors / writers, because nobody is going to care about an audience that doesn’t form an opinion at all beyond basic emotional reactions; uncritical consumers are milk and honey to them ) nor a pursuit of knowledge ( passively accepting knowledge is, according to elias, far less effective in raising up eye avatars than letting them learn to ‘see’ on their own ). all that power goes to mx media ( @hdtvtits​ ) or, if you don’t like crossovers, Just Definitely Not the Eye. it’s when you start performing analysis that the eye takes interest -- which is why the eye continues to thrive in academia ( au where i write meta on just how bad that gets, historically, but again there are things we don’t get into until we research thoroughly ). the more you lose yourself in compiling information, to the exclusion of everything else, the more you appeal to beholding. and when you start unveiling secrets, which there are plenty of in film and film production, things kept private from the audience, ‘movie magic’, then feeding can begin.
this may come as a surprise, but levi does not have a response to whether or not they ‘like’ movies. if you ask them, ‘did you enjoy that movie?’ they will not say ‘yes’ or ‘no’, they will just start launching into ripping it apart. levi probably started out enjoying movies recreationally, but at some point, they became not just unwilling to but incapable of watching films without analyzing -- and what separates this from normal people who are conscientious and engaged viewers is that this is a mania that spans hours. their ‘digestion’ of a film is obsessive and has a physical component because it is eldritch in nature. i can’t stress enough that levi isn’t just a pretentious film buff who says ‘oh i can’t consume media for pleasure or uncritically’, though they may have been at some point in their college career! they have a physical and metaphysical makeup that drives them to frenzy over what they watch. the instant they finish a film, they’ll begin a rapid accumulation of knowledge of anything they can dig up: the who, what, when, where, why, how. if they do have an emotional response, it’s incredibly removed, and their way of processing it is to drill into how and why the film made them feel that way. 
if they try to avoid this step in the process -- if they just watch a movie, turn it off, and attempt to go to bed -- they will start to weaken immediately. watching the movie isn’t enough for feeding. if it was, the eye wouldn’t take any interest at all. it’s the genuinely out-of-control driving impulse to keep researching and researching until there is nothing left about a piece of media that isn’t known, shredding through academic papers and script drafts and director’s notes and interviews and everything they can get their hands on, that stems from and feeds beholding. they do not settle for what is put on the screen. they will even cold call creators in a fit and try to get them to talk about the production ( which is, yes, invasive -- beholding is an eldritch entity, it is not healthy or good and does not inspire healthy or good habits! ). 
they may not even be capable of enjoying a piece on its own merits; it’s all about the world it opens up to them, it’s about stuffing themselves with information until they can’t breathe and overstimulate and pass out. then recovery from that can take days as they process what they learned and sort it all out in their mind. they don’t really do much with this information; just knowing it is enough. if an archivist or watcher wants to take action about it, they can ask levi to spit it back up for them. but ultimately, despite the impact that this has on their health, this is still low-level feeding for a low-level avatar. unless it’s a truly gruesome movie or has an exceptionally shady production background, it’s not really the fear that the eye is looking for. levi is feeding one half of beholding, the half that wants them to consume knowledge and secrets. if levi didn’t take / read statements as well, or go out and witness live horrific events, they would probably starve -- their body would eat itself processing knowledge.
and i will talk about the component of parasocial relationships, anxiety that stems from being an actor / director / content creator in general and having your work and your image spiral out of control as it’s ripped apart and dissected by consumers, because that is beholding territory as well. it’s just not actually what levi does, but because it relates to the media-beholding relationship, i’ll have it on this blog.
