thoughts on wash's fighting style and his position in pfl because I can (utc because it's really long lol):
wash is very unique among the freelancers for a variety of reasons, one is that he doesn't specialize in one specific area of anything, he's a jack of all trades who is able to fill in for other freelancers if necessary. for example in s9 when york was supposed to be unavailable for lock picking/infiltration duty, carolina immediately went to wash (and we are ignoring that york is not shown to be good at lock picking!) if she trusted wash to fill in for their specialist in one area, I feel it's not a stretch to imagine that he can do so in other areas as well.
need a snipper but north and wyoming aren't available? wash can cover. need someone to get into the enemies' computer systems in place of ct, south, or york? wash can cover. need someone for stealth or reconnaissance in place of florida? wash can cover. etc etc.
wash's combat style reflects that jack of all trades, master of none thing very well too, as the way that he fights is very grounded and pragmatic when compared to the rest of the freelancers. a lot of people like to portray wash as less skilled than the other freelancers, but in truth I believe that wash being able to keep up and compete with the other freelancers despite his lack of dramatic flare is a show of just how competent and skilled of a soldier he is. wash is so good at doing what he does that he doesn't need all that extra bullshit to get the job done. sure, he might not look as Cool and SexyTM as the others while doing it, but completing the mission and surviving to live another day takes precedence over all else.
another way of looking at it is that wash fights in the same way that the odst's do, that is to say that he fights like a human who cannot plow his way through the battlefield in the same way the spartans can. wash's style of fighting is one that employs careful planning and targeted hit and run tactics—this is most obvious in recovery one and s6 whenever he's fighting against the meta.
I also feel it's important to note that wash is not a cqc fighter, he can handle himself if he gets into a cqc situations but his primary weapon is the battle rifle—which is a mid/long range weapon. if I'm being honest wash's way of fighting makes waaaaaaaaay more sense if you look at him not as someone who is trained to primarily fight against other humans, but as someone who is trained to fight against 8ft 2 ton aliens with plasma weapons that can slice through the hulls of UNSC battle cruisers (ships designed to travel through space!!!) like a hot knife cuts through butter and have the technology to raze entire planets to the ground in a matter of minutes.
I also personally believe that wash has the most military experience out of all the freelancers right behind florida, wyoming, and maine (who I hc as a spartan iii). we know that wash did his basic training in the leonis minoris system (a canonical halo system) and that system had two of the three planets glassed by the covenant in 2537, and wash directly references these events in the washed hands interview in the fan guide and the way he says it implies that he likely completed his basic training that same year. now I have some grievances with the timeline given in the book when it comes to the events depicted in the freelancer saga because it's just kinda weird, but everything prior to that bit is actually fine (though I hate the way that they decide to number the timeline lmao).
now in halo canon the human/covenant war ended in 2552, and according to the timeline in the rvb fan guide that was 1 year after alpha was sent to blood gulch. project freelancer is first cleared for funding 7 years BBG (before blood gulch), and recruits the 50 freelancers 5 years BBG. doing some math we can determine that pfl was cleared for funding in the year 2544, and the freelancers are recruited for pfl in 2546. so assuming wash finished his basic training in 2537 that would mean that he was in the military for 9 years before he joined pfl, and while wash is addressed as a corporal (e-4) in the washed hands interview he was most likely demoted to that after he was court martialed, and he was possibly going to be dishonorably discharged from the military because of his disorderly conduct.
using the current standards used by the us marine corps when it comes to rank progression, wash was most likely a sergeant (e-5) who was very close to being promoted to a staff sergeant (e-6). wash as a sergeant would've essentially been the assistant manager/co-leader of the platoon he was in while his staff sergeant was the manager/leader, and that would explain why he was able to even get into an argument with his CO in the first place. I believe wash held a similar position in pfl, as it's kind of implied that he did some management stuff in pfl (talking with internals/upper brass, him feeling comfortable with openly questioning carolina about whether york should be allowed on the sarcophagus heist, and of course he shows the ability to direct and somewhat lead south in recovery one, and him leading church, caboose, and the reds in s6, and him taking charge of the meta in s8).
even if wash wasn't a sergeant as a corporal he would've been in a position to be the leader of a fire team, so basically wash isn't some rookie who had no clue wtf he was doing as many in the fandom like to characterize him; he is an experienced and battle hardened soldier by the time he joins pfl no matter how you look at it.
to put all of that into context, carolina is born 29 years BBG, which would be 2522. so during pfl she's in the 24-28 range and she wouldn't have joined the military until 2540. I actually personally head canon that wash is the same age as carolina, but that he illegally enlisted at 15 because of a crappy home life, but ignoring my head canon and assuming that he joined the military at 18 instead, he would've been born in 2519.

I feel like I need to start tagging these types of posts as "Cookie run makes Sug go insane"
Anyway, what is up with the Cookie Timeline. I know they are cookies so they don't human years but for the purposes of this rant/analysis, we will be using them.
So, if Custard Cookie the III is actually related to Pure Vanilla Cookie, then that means that the fall of the Pure Vanilla kingdom happened happened about 1 generation ago (because Custard III's grandfather was already grown and had a baby according to the memories seen in Timeless Kingdom)
Tumblr media
(Picture: Premier Custard Cream Cookie holding Custard Cookie's father as a baby)
A generation is about 20-30 years but i am going to be very lenient and say Custard the III's father was 30 when he had his son and Custard III is 10. This would mean that it had been 40 years since the Vanilla Kingdom collapsed (and less than 40 years since the Dark Flour War ended. Wow.)
That means that the Creme Republic formed and established itself in less than 40 years (assuming they spent as year or two searching for a new home). While this is rather fast, it is technically possible for that to happen.
Except it's not? Kind of? This is where it gets funky.
In Crunchy Dreams, Oyster Cookie looks back on her memories from when she was a child. When her nanny told her about the mermaid and the young sailor. This is obviously about Lord Oyster and White/Black Pearl Cookie but the thing is that they mentioned that this event happened generations ago.
Tumblr media
Assuming Elder just means parent (basing this of Custard and Clotted Cream). That means that Lord Oyster is at the bare minimum Oyster Cookie's great grandfather
Friendly Reminder thats Oyster Cookie is canonically 40-50 years old.
Tumblr media
Okay thanks what the fudge (pun intended)
That's about century. A century.
"But, Sugaaaaaaaar, thats just a one time special event. It's not meant to be taken so seriously, and it's probably not even canon anymore."
Okay, then, I present to you Exhibit B. The most fresh evidence we got. "A Mermaid's Tale."
This is dialgue from Part 2 of the story of "A Mermaid's Tale" titled "Captain Abalone Cookie's Dilemma"
Tumblr media
So, at this point the Republic was not only founded, but well established enough to have Family Houses and all that jazz. While not canon, i believe it's safe to assume that Lord Oyster is meant 20-30 years old because he is old enough to be on voyages but not old enough to be considered an Elder. Considering Oyster is 40-50 and the Republic was founded within 40 years, that means that Lord Oyster is Oyster's father, uncle, or older brother at best.
You se where it gets trippy? Lord Oyster's story is framed as if it was a thing in the past but for all we know this could have happened 2 summers ago or something like that
Nothing clashes with the timeline as much as the Creme Republic does. Dark Flour war ended 40 years ago? Understandable. Hollyberry has 2 young granddaughters, Dark Cacao has one grown son and Pure Vanilla has possibly one very young grandson? A little weird but not uncommon.
Did i miss something? Am i going insane for a game with cookie politics? Find out in the next episode of dragon ballz

Toons aren't usually carbon copies of another pre-existing toon -- that's typically reserved for toons that are created for reboots if the original toon cannot perform or if the company no longer has Copy Right over the original toon 😀🫶🏼✨️

Now I'm thinking about Pop Trolls and what happened with them... I love making it clear in my fic that what happened with the Bergens affected them, to various degrees.
Small ramble? I guess? It's not completely cohesive
In Hanahaki, they make peace with the Bergens, but most older Trolls are still anxious around them, and only Bridget and Gristle actually know where the village is and they never go in.
In Different Beat I'm at a bit of limbo, I can see them helping Bridget which would help King Gristle and it dominos into the Bergens being happy, but there won't be a positive relationship between the two species.
In Experiment Pop... well, Bergens are genuinely huge bad guys there, and there's no way the Pop Trolls would ever willingly interact with a Bergen. There's more trauma than just Trollstice, and it affects the newer generations too meaning they can't fully get away from what happened.
I have more aus that I haven't posted but Bergen relations are spotty or bad there too, so... I guess I just think they should have been affected more
So it's all different, which is the joy of aus, but something I don't like is how glossed over the trauma of Trollstice is in the movies and the series. How long were the Pop Trolls captured and eaten? The franchise doesn't give us a definitive answer, but from context clues I would say a decade or two at the bare minimum. The first movie starts with the story where it's shown the city is built around the Troll Tree. They wouldn't get such an established city in so little time, I refuse to believe that. Trollstice was so integral to them, that the adult Bergens in the beginning of the first movie seemed like they had had a Troll their entire lives. I refuse to believe the Bergens showed up between BroZone breaking up and Rosiepuff being eaten
I want to say that realistically, the Pop Trolls were captured for 80-130 years. It may seem like a lot, but it is what makes most sense to me (feel free to debate me on that and provide your own speculated timeline). The timeline just... doesn't work properly? We don't have any set points to look at, except that in the first movie the escape was 20 years ago, and between World Tour and Band Together a month has passed. This makes it so I can fuck around with the timeline as needed, but they could have given me more to work with. So the only timeline I am working with is that at the escape, the Pop Trolls had been stuck with the Bergens for nearly 130 years, the whole Music schism happened almost 200 years ago (and while they were with the Bergens there was a generation or two who didn't even know other Trolls existed), and the Strings were made around 250 years ago? But that also doesn't fully fit with how a society evolves, so might have been even longer between all of this?
Anyway... Back to the Pop Trolls and how the Bergens and Trollstice affected them
I love making jokes in my stories about how desensitized the Pop Trolls are to death and destruction of their home. I love writing other Trolls' reactions to that. It's fun and morbid at the same time. Like the other genres can be as pissy as they want about Pop's attempted takeover so many years ago, but in a cynical way, they got their karma... Other genres had places to be safe, evolve in their own time, no huge threats, but the Pop Trolls lost that, and you can't tell me that wasn't lost for a long time
I firmly believe the Pop Trolls don't have an actual cemetery, but rather a field of flowers planted in remembrance, a Memorial. Flowers planted for the ones lost, but no bodies buried with them. Just a flower representing who they were and what they meant to their loved ones (which brings in my headcanon that flowers and flower language is a big part of Pop Troll culture). It's just in the past 20 years they actually have had bodies to bury, and those are few and far between
...I had a point to this ramble, I think. I think Trollstice and Pop Troll history is my fictional roman empire, it has genuinely gone in and out of my head since the first movie. It just hits hard

metal sonic being so extra in heroes is hysterical like. he didn’t even need to take chocola eggman canonically raises his own chao like he had a personal chao garden in the original sonic adventure you Cannot tell me he doesn’t have a ton of those lil buddies and even outside of that You Can Literally Just Fucking Buy Them. but he had this whole dramatic plan to lure everyone to the right place bc he wanted to be cooler than sonic. i love that for him. heroes metal in general is really funny like if you think about it for five seconds bc he's like. 3 foot tall very angry and also like fourteen fifteen mentally this is why we don’t let teenagers with severe psychotic depression become gods.

one huge inconsistency/plot hole is abigail/rest of the women in camp apparently knowing who mary gillis/linton was and I hate it but honestly it kinda makes arthur x mary 10x funnier. they speak to each other about this heartbreaking life changing love that ultimately failed because they were so young and oh it was so long ago when in reality its been like 5 years and they were in their mid 30s.

one eternally frustrating thing about comics is that sometimes an issue will be really good for fleshing something out about a character you love while at the same time absolutely obliterating an aspect of a different character you love's characterization. and you just have to take this shit lying down

anyway finally finished girls to the front. obviously had a lot of opinions about it. i have a lot more respect for the day-to-day lived realities of riot grrls and the underground community fostered. but like. man. is the music so secondary. my main critique of riot grrl is it took many of those bands growing out of the movement amd growing up to hit something truly, artistically great (music-wise).
#i think about marcus calling dc punk like. musically rigorous (in a way she was implying was 'macho' to a degree)#and how (1) most of the dischord stuff was still very much diy it was just naturally growing more experimental in a posthardcore landscape#but also (2) i dont think thats inherently.... a bad thing???? i guess i just dont see practicing a lot nd being passionate about your craf#as unpunk or some chauvinist methology that keeps girls out#like yes. allowing women the space to be imperfect. important! bc women arent allowed to play annoying shitty juvenile music#but that doesnt mean naturally developing as a musician and valuing tenchique and theory spits in the face of that#also of course sara marcus' perspective is pretty wack its easily the drawback of the book#she makes a lot of snap judgements and incorporates odd grudges that make me not trust her wholeheardly#lots of heroworship too.#the jessica hopper stuff is the most wild bc ive now become invested in hoppers like. career and shit#and even as someone who disagrees woth hopper on a lot i thought the book went Out Of Its Way#to shit on her in a way that kind of directly ruins her reputation as a music critic and such#and its so disheartening bc theres no grace given at all.#like again these were young girls and women- im willing to imagine theyve grown and changed and evolved#but marcus doesnt really care#or at least never interrogates that in the text itself#anyway! still positive experience to have a concise timeline and such#my posts
