Found your blog, cool stuff and guides, but getting anxious. I've always wanted to get into Lolita, don't know a whole lot of specifics but admire from afar. But your talks of what the community will or won't accept reminds me that I am naturally unfeminine. My facial hair alone needs shaving every morning because I'm stubby by the afternoon, I don't know how to do makeup and it's sensory hell for me. I've never performed femininity, even for like school dances, because my body precludes me from it, and I guess Lolita became this dream of wearing the stuff I've wanted to all along.

So, I guess what I'm saying is... Should I just drop the idea, at least insofar as taking part in the community? If people are going to judge for things like chokers or types of lace, I don't see how I'd be remotely accepted as someone that can dress fem and still be mistaken for being a guy.

You've got two issues you've brought up here. The first is the way that the lolita community generally treats the "rules" of lolita, or what we do and don't accept in the fashion. The second is about finding acceptance in the lolita community, even if you don't present in a way that's traditionally feminine. Let's look at both of those, starting with the first one.

The vast majority of the lolita community is very aware of the difference between giving concrit like, "you should get a different necklace," and the shitty comments like, "have you tried getting a new face?" We build coordinates the way we build IKEA cabinets or draw a picture of a house. We put them together and then ask, "Does this look right?" or "how can I make this look more real?" On this blog, I make posts to answer questions people might have, or to bring up points that other people might not have seen. All of these things that we get picky about on this blog are elements of things you build or craft or create. You're making an outfit. You're making a thing.

People who are not assholes understand that most people are not building or crafting or tailoring their bodies the way we build/craft/tailor our inanimate objects. We don't pick out what body we start with. Altering our bodies takes a long time, and no one should be obligated to do that just to wear clothing. It's pretty unanimous in the mainstream western lolita community that giving "concrit" (in quotes because it's not really what concrit is) about something someone can't change exists somewhere in the spectrum between rude and bullying.

As a tip to people who follow this blog, if you see someone critiquing someone's body instead of someone's outfit, dropping the comment of, "Wow, that's pretty rude," actually does a whole lot of good for everyone involved. Do that.

I'm not going to say that if you want to participate in the lolita community, you will find universal acceptance. A lot of people who don't look like the models that the big brands use to advertise their new releases will find that there's some parts of the fashion that are more difficult for them. A lot of brands don't specifically cater to people who aren't the standard size they've decided they use. This has gotten better over the years, but size discrimination is still a thing.

You don't actually need to join a lolita community, if you don't want to. For a long time, I made handmade lolita garments and just wore them for a couple of pictures in my selfie hallway. I'd put them on tumblr and get very little notice, but I liked how I looked in those clothes and so I'd make more of them. I had a couple of lolita friends and we'd talk about the fashion online. I posted and got some feedback in a cosplay.com thread, which wasn't a lolita-themed space. I wore it to conventions like a cosplay instead of like a fashion. And the thing about this that made a difference to me was that, when I decided I did want to join a mainstream community, I'd already had some experience what what I could and couldn't make and what I did and didn't like.

By the way, it's actually very common in outfit shots to block your face either with your phone or with a sticker, so if you have facial hair and don't like makeup, you can still participate in the online community without having to change that.

So my advice to you is to look for high-quality lolita pieces made by legitimate lolita brands. You don't need to spend a lot of money, but don't buy from Amazon, don't buy anything labeled with or reminiscent of the term "sissy". Go onto places where people freely post lolita coordinates, like instagram and lookbook, and search tags of brand names. You get much better results when you search #babythestarsshingbright than you do with just a #lolita search. Find a dress that you like, and see how other people coordinated it. Check all the components of their outfits and see if you can put similar components into your coordinate. I've found that people from the lolita community react more positively to a coordinate if the person posting knows the right terms (coordinate/jsk/op/some brand names/etc), and follows the convention of posting their pronouns and then posting what brand the parts of the coordinates are from. If someone who is appropriating lolita fashion terms and styling for fetish reasons tries to join a legitimate lolita community just to get their rocks off, they usually don't do that standard way of interacting with the group, so doing the pronouns+coord rundown shows that you've done some research about how coordinates are usually posted to social media.

You're totally welcome to just wear lolita for your own sake. There's plenty of places to post a look online that aren't lolita-specific, but where lolita fashion is accepted positively by the average viewer. You could even make a separate account on instagram or facebook or twitter or wherever you'd like to, and just post pictures of your coordinates with your face censored. There's a lot of ways to participate in parts of the lolita fashion without diving straight in to very critical groups like BSoLF or Rufflechat or CoF.

Someone in my comm encouraged me to make this list of resources for new lolitas. We were talking about how hard it can be to find information from Google search and there's just so much misinformation out there. I have a list of links that I've bookmarked and read over the past decade for when I finally become a lolita. I organized the list by sections in a specific order. It goes from information about the fashion and then to where to buy it.

To any new lolitas, there is so much information out there about lolita fashion that is still available. Part of the fun for me was researching the fashion, looking at coords, and learning what makes lolita lolita. There's so much information out there for you to immerse yourself in and even more stuff that's not listed in this resource list.

What is Lolita Fashion

Fyeah Lolita - This is my favorite blog and I still go back and read it. The last post was made in 2016 and the fashion has changed a lot since then, but it's pretty comprehensive and provides a good base knowledge. Imo, I think these articles (1 2 3 4) are required reading for anyone entering the fashion Lolita Fashion 101 - Bay Area Kei did several videos on lolita fashion during lockdowns. I recommend them for anyone that prefers video format. Raine Dragon's Lolita 101 series - Raine is a lolita that still updates her blog and has a lot of information on the history of lolita fashion. And she has a really great article on Chinese indie brands that should also be required reading for anyone new to using Taobao.

Costs of Lolita Manufacturing - One of the first things you'll notice is that lolita can be expensive. This resource breaks down the costs associated with manufacturing and why brands charge what they charge.

Substyles of Lolita Fashion

Where to get Lolita Fashion

Before even buying anything, you will need a tape measure to take your measurements. You'll need to measure your bust, waist, hips, and shoulder width in centimeters. That's how you will find out which clothes will fit you. Sizing can be different from brand to brand and country to country. I know many are used to buying using letter sizes, but it's best to go by actual measurements. Aim to buy clothes that are 4 - 6cm larger than your actual measurements to allow room for breathing/eating/etc. If you're brand new to the fashion, I highly recommend sticking to the sources listed in the videos below. It's very easy to get scammed if you don't know what to look for and I'd hate for anyone to lose their money on barely wearable clothes from Amazon/Ebay/Aliexpress. Where to Buy Lolita Fashion How to shop for Lolita Fashion online - secondhand is life for lolita fashion and there are so many options. PinkFakeFlowers goes in depth into the many ways to get it. I personally recommend 42lolita for anyone looking to buy from Chinese brands on Taobao.

Plus Size Lolita

Unfortunately, many of the Japanese brands and even some Chinese indie brands are not size inclusive. If you can't fit into the mainstream brands, don't worry there are still options. I always recommend Meta since they have a Plus Size and occasionally a Plus Plus size of their dresses and blouses that goes up to 160cm or even 200cm in some releases. Plus Size Lolita Crash Course Where to Start as a Plus Sized Lolita - This is a wonderful resource listing brands that are size inclusive.

Online Spaces for Lolita Fashion

Lolita fashion is pretty spread out now compared to the EGL (still recommend reading livejournal because its a cool time capsule of the lolita comm) days, but there are still groups on Facebook BSoLF - Great for beginners to ask questions and be helped by others. It's hard to search here but I recommend looking through the group for info. Your Local Comm (if applicable) - most are still on Facebook even if they still have a Discord. You can search for your local one on this list.

More Resources for New Lolitas

Lolita Tips for New Lolitas Three helpful tips for coordinating an outfit Lolita Tips Tumblr - I don't recommend Fanplusfriend anymore, but 42lolita is a good replacement. I've been working on little lolita fashion paper dolls dress up, essentially, for class (there's a presentation to make and a group activity to plan, so I'm presenting on lolita fashion and the activity will be the dress up dolls), the goal being that people who don't wear the fashion can try their hand at putting together a coord. And honestly? I'm pretty happy with it.

Here's an example of one out of 4 dolls and two coords I made from their wardrobe

One of my darlings has dutifully tested each little "capsule wardrobe" and it's been so much fun hearing about their train of thought putting outfits together. They don't wear the fashion themselves, but always welcome me talking about it, so it's a good metric for how people in class will do with it.

Should I post the printable pages here? Would people enjoy that? It's just a matter of cutting out the clothes and glueing together the outfit, pretty much. I'd love to see what people do with it.

Fun fact, the way colors balance in the wheelchair is slightly different from standing. I normally wouldn't coord this with navy, because there's not enough navy in the dress to make it work. And it also doesn't work in the wheelchair, but it's harder to tell, because the foot rests break up the navy tights and hide them.

This is what happens when we pick our coords at 6 am and don't try them on, hide them in the back room at work, and change clothes at the mall before the meet.

In RP-wise its poetic cause the main purpose of Purgatory is to sow discordance, hence why all the couples and pairings are split apart, it's supposed to create drama and make them butt heads

Team BOLAS active members are filled with people who in their own way feel alone. Jaiden always feeling outcast because of how she is very forgiving of cucurucho, slime is obvious, foolish always keeping up that act of nothing bothering him when the loss of his family really weighs on him, Cellbit also obvious, Baghera also feeling out of place without pomme and also the whole experiemnt thing, philza losing his kids and just trying to mend the empty spot, and I think this is carres second time logging on

And now they're together just flat out saying secrets because they're at the end of their rope

Outside of RP, yeah they got along and still had fun despite the imbalance because they spent time together irl and thus formed stronger bonds, but those bonds started in RP first, slime and Baghera bonding during elections, the cucurucho buddies, Phil and Cellbit the archivists, etc. They already have such strong ties in RP despite always feeling like their own respective loners

Now they're in a game that forces them to stick it out for their own selves, play the game and grind and sweat, and what do they do at their breaking point? They don't care. They don't car ewho comes for them, they flat out showed themselves and revealed their coords cause it doesn't matter

Yes some of their kids are on the line but at this point, they're certain blue and green will duke it between themselves and see if they take pity thinking red is the cursed team

I remember sometimes winning a game doesn't mean playing it to win, it's playing it how you want to play, and team BOLAS?!?!?!, once they stopped playing for points and victory, started to just take it easy, they won in their own right

Cleo languorously stretched across the couch, swinging their legs over Bdubs’ lap. His hand wrapped around their ankle, but he didn’t look up from the book he was reading. He was squinting, holding the pages only a few inches from his face.

“You need glasses,” Cleo remarked.

“I—huh?” Bdubs asked, tearing his attention away from the book. His brow furrowed as his brain caught up. “Excuse me! Do I look like a nerd to you?”

“Hmm,” Cleo said, sinking further into the couch. A warm sea breeze blew in through the open window and tousled their hair. Living in Atlantis sure has some perks. 

Bdubs sniffed, returning back to his book. It was something he had found in Cleo’s library, something about color theory. They couldn’t fault him for reading it but it was awfully… boring.

They wished Etho were here, if only to have someone join them in making fun of Bdubs. But he had left early in the morning to go caving of all things. Like it was some sort of hobby. 

As if summoned, Cleo’s communicator beeped. They dug through their pockets until they found the device and flipped it open. The message that greeted them made them burst out laughing. 

“What?” Bdubs asked. “Let me see!”

Still laughing, Cleo handed the communicator to him. 

Etho was blown up by creeper. 

“Oh, geez,” Bdubs snickered. “What’s he doing down there?”

“Not using his shield, apparently.”

“Does he ever?” 

Grinning, Cleo snatched the communicator out of Bdubs’ hands and began typing.

ZombieCleo: try using that thing on your left arm to block any explosions! 

Etho: thanks, cleo. I never would have known

Cleo snorted. 

“What? What’s he saying?” Bdubs abandoned his book so he could read over Cleo’s shoulder. 

“He must have set spawn over there,” Cleo mused. There were no cries of despair echoing through the castle to indicate that Etho had spawned here. 

“See? He’s still an amazing wonderful genius.”

“Despite all signs to the contrary.”

“Cleo!” Bdubs admonished. But he still stretched out alongside them on the couch, pillowing his head on their chest.  “Naptime?” he asked hopefully.

It was midday, the warm breeze soporific. Despite themselves, Cleo yawned. It wasn’t such a bad idea, taking a nap… it wasn’t like there was much else to do, with the castle almost all decorated and the end of the season drawing near…

Cleo’s communicator dinged. 

Etho was blown up by creeper.

“Again?!” Bdubs squawked. 

Cleo shrieked with laughter. “Oh my god! What’s he doing? Should we go down and rescue him?”

“Oh, no, no, Cleo, this is the Etho we’re talking about. He doesn’t need our help.” 

“Right, of course. And this doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that we’re very, very comfy right now.”

Bdubs’ eyes were already falling closed. “Exactly, Cleo, we’re better friends if we don’t help him.”

Cleo’s communicator dinged.

“Don’t tell me…” Bdubs whined.

Riddle doesn’t seem to be very interested in fashion at all so seeing you at first it might confuse him

Before he overblots he may not understand or even accept the style but after he will be at least interested in it

When figuring what yami kawaii is about he is very intrigued he doesnt understand that most fashion trends/styles have true and nice meanings such as bringing awareness to mental health

He doesnt really understand why someone would dress outwardly “different” but that doesnt mean he doesnt think it looks good

He’ll get you little gifts of accessories, shoes, skirts, dresses, etc on random occasions

Trey Clover

Trey may be a little caught off guard when he first sees the fashion but he doesnt think anything bad about it

He really likes that it promotes mental health awareness but he was super concerned at first without knowing that

He’ll help you dye your hair

Trey doesn’t really see anything wrong with dressing in what makes you happy

If anyone makes fun of you or stares he’ll defend you in any situation

Cater is surprised like everyone else yet he is excited to talk to you about it more

Deuce is super protective in general since you are the first person to just treat him normally so if anyone made fun of your outfit in anyway he’ll confront them

He likes showing you off to his mom in a ton of ways not just for your appearance

Seriously i dont think he cares at all like anyone can wear what they want so why does that stop when you wear something different?

Any time you dress up for a date, for school, or any other event where you can dress up expect him to be teasing you the whole way

Gyaru was started in the early 2000s as a movement against japans beauty standard on women, they instead of staying pale and modest tanned and wore all the less modest and bright clothes they wanted! Styles like mamba and ganguro were started by girls who liked the movement while a style, kogal, was started by rich highschool girls who could do whatever they wanted.

Leona Kingscholar

I know i keep saying this but leona does not give a shit what you wear

He does admire the effort you put into your appearance everyday, plus your a girl so he already has a ton of respect for you

If you are more a extreme style gal he may think its a little bit of an eye sore but he still thinks its good that you can express yourself despite others opinions

If you have a more toned down style then he may not even expect you were a gyaru (if he even knows what that is 💀) probably just thought you were some popular girl but doesnt even say anything
