it's been 424 days since i started my blog, and here we are.

10 to the power of 3.

that is, in fact, a lot of people.

i can't even begin to understand how 1000 people like my writing. i think that it will still take me a while to feel like a good writer, even though i've just accomplished this milestone of followers.

i feel like a novice all the time, because, well, i've only been writing since january of 2022 (613 days, if i've calculated correctly). this hobby of mine was spontaneous and new and is still something i need to get a lot better at. i never wrote when i was younger apart from academic essays, it just wasn't something i found interesting, but since i've gotten into fanfiction, i've found my place where i can write and be creative.

the sincerest thank you to everyone who likes my writing. whether you were my first follower or my 1000th follower, i love you.

somehow this has started to feel like a well thought out thank you speech for some big occasion, even though it's just funny old tumblr dot com where little zanna reached a milestone. but this feels like an eventful day, but i'm still writing just whatever comes to my mind, none of this post was planned beforehand.

i want to really really thank the people who have been a big part of my life, my tumblr moots and close friends. (more sappiness ahead ew)

@eternalgyu hannie is the entire reason i am even writing on this platform. she was the start to everything, from the very second i created this blog to now, she's been here for all 424 days. and i can't even understand why she has stuck with me for that long, but i love her more than anyone else on this planet. i've dumped all my ideas on her and given her spoilers for fics i was writing. she's given me so many ideas and suggestions that have really helped along the way to create this blog and get it to where it is today. she will always be number 1 for me. she is irreplaceable. hannie, i love you so much.

@blue-jisungs axe :D the first blog i followed, and my first moot. she has been here from before i hit 100 followers. she's read my shitty old writing from when this blog was just starting to form. and i thank her for sticking with me cause my writing back then was not the greatest, let's just say that. axe has always been someone i looked up to, especially when i was first starting. i loved her writing and it inspired a lot of the first fics i wrote for this blog!! she'll always be one of my closest friends, i love her so much.

@hannahsophie0103 thank you for being one of the first people to send in requests, and for continuing to give me ideas. i get a lot of requests now, but when this blog was still a fetus, my inbox sat empty for weeks and weeks. i got so inspired and motivated whenever i got a request, and writing was truly so fun whenever i felt like i was writing for someone.

sorry for lumping you all together, but all my caratblr moots, i love you so much. everyone in the moot circle especially-- who i've talked to on the discord server-- you are some of my closest friends, and i love how we're all here, just writing some silly little fics for seventeen on tumblr. some of you have absolutely incredible writing that i can only hope to achieve one day. when i read some of your fics, it feels like actual art. words strung together so beautifully that i can say with no hesitation that you've created an actual masterpiece. thank you for inspiring me and talking to me daily, i hope you haven't gotten bored of me. you all feel like my close friend group, who i could share anything with and you'd still support and love me. thank you for being friends with me, and i love you.

what's the love sight event, you may ask? well, although i had dozens of ideas for what to do once i reached 1K, i decided that since txt was the start for this blog, i wanted them to be the centre of my event.

love sight will be a multiple part series where each member of txt will get their own fic.

i've put a lot of thought and planning into this event (only the planning though, i have a long way to go for actually writing the fics, but i'll get there eventually). i expect that actually completing this event will take... a very long time. so please bear with me as i write these fics!!

i have some other things planned soon for fics, such as the caratsland song event and some possible collaborations, so if there is a wait between fics for love sight, i'm sorry about that!!

I think you either have been too removed from phanniedom or you're on a really chill side of it, bc that definitely isn't what I've observed. Lbr, most of us are here for those little glimpses behind the curtain. If we weren't, then it wouldn't be the majority of what people talk about. But yeah apparently the latest chapter has everyone shook but at the same time, one of my friends said that it was a good ending and honestly? I think it was. The time mikey and takemitchy broke my heart was when he had turned into bonten's leader and sanzu as well as Haitani brothers were working under him and he had become so broken and depressed and Takemitchy was trying to help him. I was happy when Baji came back cause he was one of my fav characters and the way I was shocked when he died cause of Kazutora... as well as Mitsuya dying as well

the manga was really well made honestly.

Genshin Impact x One Piece

Mostly just what visions I think some characters from One Piece would have if visions existed because I think the theories on why characters received their respective vision types were neat.

Disclaimer: I haven't played genshin in like 1+ year or so, but played from week 2 of launch to like Xiao's first banner and then on and off afterwards, so most of my knowledge from Genshin may be outdated or incorrect now.

But start off with Luffy. He has Pyro Vision. It was granted to him the moment he was given the straw hat by Shanks. Theoretically, Pyro visions are granted to those with a strong passion towards a goal or extremely motivated and straightforward. Thus, Luffy's goal was cemented, then, on wanting to become the Pirate King. (Pyro is fire typing, for the non genshin Impact players)

Zoro has two Visions. One is a masterless vision that was once owned by Kuina. Originally, all his crewmates thought it was his, which was an anemo vision. Anemo visions were theorized to be granted to those that needed to be freed from their duties or needing freedom in general. In Kuina's case, she wants to be freed from her constraints as a female swordsman. Her vision was granted to her on the night Zoro and Kuina fought their 1000th battle. When she died, Zoro asked to keep her Vision along with her sword as a reminder for his goal. At times, he's inadvertently activated it, but only in times of crisis, like a guardian angel that was watching over him. He cannot activate it at will. (Anemo is wind typing)

His second vision was granted to him during post Thriller Bark. Geo vision. I don't remember what people theorized for geo vision users back then, but looking into the lore on the characters that have one now, it's given to people that reach a sort of realization about their goals or given to ones that have affirmed their goals and beliefs. In this case, Zoro's is the realization that he wanted to support not only his dream, but Luffy's and the rest of the crew's. That his dream will have lost meaning without completing it alongside them. Alternatively, I also thought Hydro, as his pursuit of swordsmanship and upholding his own beliefs and values, regardless of others' opinions or how it affects them, which is a common theme of hydro characters, would also fit, but story wise, geo fits better. (Hydro is water and geo is earth)

Sanji's is undoubtedly Cryo. I debated with myself on whether he'd be anemo or Pyro as well, but in the end, I decided on cryo because Sanji is based on love. Cryo visions are granted to those with a great or strong love for their family or friends or even lovers. His was granted to him on the days of the Baratie, quite randomly waking up to it one day. It was a slow, gradual realization, of how much he truly loved Zeff as his father and and the love he's received from him. I debated on other elements, too. I know anemo fits because he needed to escape from his home for freedom or Pyro because he's known for his passion, but cryo fits the idea of how much Zeff has shaped him and being the reason why his vision is granted to him versus his anemo vision was granted as a byproduct of Germa, so I say he gets a cryo vision. Pyro is passion, but I feel like it's not as nice, story and character setting wise. Funny how cryo is ice, but Sanji mainly uses fire.

Usopp is an electro vision. Given to those that are unique, distinct from their group, and those destined for greatness. Given post enies lobby, moments after being rescued by merry, but before her burial.

Nami is definitely an anemo vision. I can also see electro vision, though. Hers would be during her thieving days, resonating in the pile of treasure she desperately stole.

Robin is dendro vision, which not a single playable character currently has in the game. But from what the dendro archon is based on, it would be those that are incredibly smart? It could also be geo vision, and she could parallel Albedo, but there's also an air of mystery for dendro, which fits her as well. Anemo, again, can fit her, but I feel she mostly needed saving (from herself) than freeing. (Dendro is grass typing)

Jinbe is geo. I don't know why. I just feel he is.

Brook would be cryo, i think. He doesn't receive a vision until after reincarnation. (After activation of his devil fruit) During the days he's stuck in the darkness, hallucinating his friends, the dim light of his vision was a constant reminder of the love he held for his crew and for laboon, further sending him in a desperate spiral of depression.

Chopper and Franky. No idea tbh. Chopper would be electro, maybe? Because he's special, in a sense. Franky can be hydro, with his single handed devotion to his craft, regardless of other people's opinions or using it for deeds that other people would suggest him to or geo, I guess.

Law would be the Diluc of Pyro visions. He's granted his vision early, as he wished to be as great of a doctor as his father. After the Flevance incident, he loses the urge to use his Pyro vision, meaning he lost sight of his passion. Post Corazon (Cora is cryo vision btw), he eventually finds a new goal, which is his revenge plot and picks up his Pyro Vision once more to use. Post dressrosa, he still uses it, for his pursuit in understanding D, as well as in honor for a passion to be alive for Cora.

By this, Kid has to be Pyro. The three worst generation pirates all gotta be Pyro then, because matching. Killer would be Hydro or geo, like Zoro. Alternatively, it could be cryo, since his entire personality is respecting and loving Kid. Lol

By the way, Mihawk would have an electro vision. Doflamingo kept Corazon's vision with him post death and Law steals it back post dressrosa. Doflamingo would be electro or cryo (can sometimes activate cora's cryo), because he loves his family that is useful to him or completely devoted to him

One Piece 1000 Logs Thoughts/Moments of Cherishing - 1000+ word count for a masterpiece

I usually don't post stuff like these BUT One Piece took my heart and made me emotional in many ways after reaching the 1000th episode

The very first time I notice One Piece are from many posts about it, I don't pay attention to any of the posts back then. But, not until a friend of mine he said that I should watch One Piece as it was worth it

Episode 1; slightly had made me piqued my interest back then, I never had watch any characters as a pirate or have devil fruits so I was confused by Luffy's body, I even thought that devil fruits are very rare and only Luffy has eaten it XD

Being experienced to Naruto (which I had watched before One Piece), because of the old quality of drawing back then, I was used to the old animations considering it's made <2010's

My first love or the character whom I fell inlove first was Shanks! I just love his funny and comforting personality so much, Actually I had or coincidentally watched Episode 1 of One Piece was when it's Shanks birthday so I was definitely in shocked

As time and episodes goes by, I had always been excited and learning many information's and adventure Luffy are getting, I thought that maybe even if Luffy had only 10 crew members he and his teammates will go stronger. And I was correct

Seeing each of them backstory had made me cried so much on how much pain they experiencing through the past, Especially Sanji's as because on how his father and sibling treated him as such

In Marineford, I always believe in Luffy that he can save Ace, but it shocked me when he was killed. “Not everything will always be accomplished” by anonymous. I was left stunned, wide agaped when hearing Ace's last wishes and words. He can't even see his little brother becoming the King of Pirates

The best arc for me in the whole One Piece for me might be Dressrosa, first off is because of Corazon; even if he and Law aren't biologically or blood related he still treats Law as his son and it warms me up so much—He even protected the poor boy until he died by the hands of his brother, Doflamingo

On this episode, we had discovered so many things about them. They, The Strawhat Pirates and the Whole One Piece character's will always be in my heart. I knew Luffy can beat Kaido and once he do he will be more closer in becoming what he achieved of

But of course, Everything will always come to an end. But hopefully not yet and we can experience once more different feelings with them

I am grateful to Eiichiro Oda for making a masterpiece, Some people are still hesitating if they should watch the anime as because it's long. And I must tell you, you won't regret it at all after you finished the 1000 episodes you would feel like it's not enough. And that's how we feel too as a long time One Piece fan, I'm grateful to had met this amazing one piece community that lies in Tumblr. I'm happy I had met you all and One Piece.

One Piece will always be here with me even when the time comes. Someday, If ever One Piece are finally gone IT won't be gone or vanish forever. It's always will be marked in out minds

I had fallen inlove for many of these characters and their dedication towards something they want to achieve in the future

The rivalry between Kid, Law, and Luffy is something I fancy or like. They despite being enemies they still trust each other and knew after their alliance they would be back becoming an enemy.

[SPOILERS!! I'm worried about Sanji's wellbeing and hoped he will be fine by the end of Onigashima, Despite wanting to be killed and asked that to Zoro for a favor I don't think Zoro will do it—Even if he hates Sanji he's still a nakama and something Luffy doesn't want to happen.]

I laughed many times with them and their good and gold moments.

As I watch the One Piece Episode 1000 I'm happy to able to reach the impossible along with you all and the crew. Everything Luffy did and his crew are just in whole 2 years. I'm excited to know what will he and his crew will do more for the following episode.

When the “We Are” Re animated version play I smiled and sense of great adreline rushed on me. It had been long since I last feel something excitement like this. The opening change a lot

But even if it change there's one thing I noticed about it being played, It's not just about reminding the episodes back then, but to tell us that we will restart. That we are all back to Episode 1 after Luffy had beaten Kaido and more ferocious enemies will come after them especially the new marines

I hope this will last forever but it won't, I'm ready to accept the fact that every episode/chapter we take the closer we are to the end. Thank you once more Luffy snd your crew for bringing me so much memories to always remember. I'm indebt to you forever

And for the last time I love their goals. Luffy wanting to become a Pirate King, Zoro as the greatest swordsman but In order to become one he must defeat Mihawk, Sanji who dream to find the All Blue

My daughter’s past obsession with Taylor Swift’s 1989 album was what led me to realize I love women.

Taylor Swift’s documentary on Netflix is reminding me of what led to my first significant epiphany, which was in the car with my ex-husband, my daughter, and Taylor Swift. I’ve kept this story to myself for the last 3 to 4 years so I appreciate having a place to put this.

In any case, my daughter was 2 at the time and was obsessed with the album 1989, mostly “I Wish You Would - voice memos” from the deluxe version. I think she liked the speaking part and something with the way Taylor sang it raw.

For some reason, one day, when the album went back around to the beginning, I started really paying attention to the lyrics. I finally gave in and admitted to myself that I liked this music and bopped along. We had listened to this album for the 1000th time at this point.

I’m really paying attention to the lyrics for Welcome To New York and there’s the part where she goes “you can love who you want, boys and boys and girls and girls”. I was like ok, I thought Taylor Swift didn’t express opinions on social issues so that was interesting to me, but didn’t think more of it. Then Style came on and I’m bopping along and thinking “this cannot be about Harry Styles.” I’m thinking back to the “boys and boys and girls and girls” line and think “this song cannot be about a man you’ve been dating for a month.” My mind hasn’t gotten all the way there yet, but I go on my phone while my ex is driving and my daughter fell asleep in the back. I Google to find out if Style is about Harry Styles.

I realize how ridiculous this story is as I’m recollecting it and actually typing it out.

I don’t remember the link trail but I come across something that’s like Style is about this female actress in Glee and my mind is blown. Over the next few days I’m reading about the Taylor Swift is gay conspiracy theory and having to listen to this album every car ride and I’m understanding the world in a whole new way. It doesn’t really matter to me how Taylor identifies. I’m just realizing that the entire celebrity culture is based on a heteronormative standard and it’s very likely that a good percentage of publicly heterosexual couples could actually identify differently in private. HETEROSEXUALITY IS JUST A FRONT BECAUSE THAT IS JUST HOW OUR SOCIETY DICTATES.

I have friends that I grew up with, that I hang out with that are LGBT or work with the LGBT community. As an adult, I’ve only lived in major cities making friends with a diverse group of people. I have gone to gay pride and the whole thing, but it never clicked that my “funny feelings” when I’m watching female sex scenes on screen or when a woman ran her hand down my back: those uneasy feelings are me getting turned the f*ck on. I am attracted to women. Boobs, butts, lips, soft hands, eyes, smile, (not a complete list).

I spent a solid year looking at attractive women as I’m walking down the street and really reconciling with the fact that holy sh*t this is attraction. What I’m feeling when I look at her is attraction. And I keep doing it and I keep recognizing feelings. I’m keeping all this to myself as I’m really grappling with the idea.

My fears aren’t in that my friends or anyone close to me would disown me if I’m gay. My fear is that I’m two+ years in my marriage with a two year old child and this is a life I chose. My ex and I had been emotionally abandoning one another for a long time (we’ve been together for 12 years), so the relationship was on rocky ground despite my revelation.

I spent a year recalling all the moments of doubt with a man. I spent that year really allowing myself to accept that I’m attracted to women. Eyeing this woman and that, like a kid in a candy store. This sounds terribly non-feminist and womanizing, but I’m not outwardly expressing any of this, I’m just really allowing myself to feel and be attuned to what I’m feeling. I’m understanding all the displeasure with sex with my ex (although I quite enjoyed sex with a previous boyfriend). Sex with a man can be enjoyable, but I’m just thinking back to moments with a man where in my mind I’m thinking “nope this is not doing it for me” and picturing a woman while I’m f*cking a guy.

Here I am today. Went through the chaos of separation and divorce. I spent last year falling in love with the most incredible woman who says she only likes dick, but specifically came over to my place to give me a long speech on how we are twin flames except like the friends kind. I am still in love with her and will be in love with her for the rest of my life. I’m going into 2020, moving forward, figuring out how to not fall in love with a straight woman and getting her confused about herself at the same time. There’s a woman at the gym that I’d like to make conversation with. I’m trying out other healthy extracurriculars to meet new people. D+ Rewatch: Blood Moon Ball/Fortune Cookies

Oh boy. I gotta be honest, guys. This rewatch did not turn out the way I thought it would. Hindsight is a bitch.

Blood Moon Ball

I really should like this episode more, but I was having a really hard time getting through it. All I could think about watching the episode was how much I hate Tom and how much everyone else loves Tom. 

And I just don’t get it. 

Tom is a bad person. He did a bad thing. 

Even his introduction pisses me off. He just walks through the school and every girl has to comment on how hot he is. They literally stop and stare. 

Star tells Tom no and he still keeps pushing until he gets his way. And you all like this? You keep posting how much of a fucking ‘good boy’ he is?

At least in season one, he was meant to be an antagonist. One of the titular ‘forces of evil.’ Then someone in the star vs crew had to get a massive boner for him and tried to paint him as the victim.

And whenever I point this out, someone always has to come on to my blog (like this isn’t the 1000th fucking rant on Tom I’ve done) and say, “I disagree with you about Tom.” What’s there to disagree about? Are you saying he didn’t do these things? Because he did. This is it. This is canon. He did do these things. He did try to curse Star to magically force her to love him without her knowledge, will or consent and take away her power to choose for herself. He did decide that forcing her to be his girlfriend was more important than respecting her choice. He did do this. It’s not up for debate. There’s no ambiguity. It’s all right there.

I’m not going to analyze this episode because @seddm​ and @ngame989​ both have already picked apart his episode every way you can. But my final thought is that my hate for Tom almost completely ruins my ability to watch this episode again. Almost. There’s still that sweet ending. Gotta love those kids.

Fortune Cookies

I had a lot more fun watching this episode than I did the previous one, which is weird because I remember back in the day I would watch Blood Moon Ball on repeat and just ditch Fortune Cookies. Plus look how cute Star and Marco are going on their Chinese food lunch date. My babies.

The job interviews were very funny. I see you, guy who does the voice of Wander from Wander Over Yonder. We’re also introduced to Toffee but I have nothing new to add, so yeah. Toffee. Enjoy, I guess.

The face that Ferguson showed up without Alfonso fueled my belief that they left Alfonso in Pixtopia. 

I swear to you my brother and I couldn’t stop singing, “This is my house. This is my house, my house,” for months. I still love singing it. 

Star doesn’t get the reference. I guess she never saw the movie. 

Did this guy really think he had a chance with Star?

This episode was a bunch of fun and I loved it. Maybe that’ll happen more often as I continue my rewatch. Here’s hoping.

What are your thoughts about running a Zootopia NFSW Tumblr page?

tl;dr

At first when i started it, i had a lot of fun, cause i was just getting into zootopia and i was also a really honry guy (pre-hrt) but now (post 4 months hrt) im getting bored of it, it doesn’t interest me

below is a rant about this blog and what i want to do with it

 don’t get me wrong i love zootopia and always will, but running the nsfw page doesn’t interest me anymore, i wanna branch off into things i do enjoy now… like anime (the greatest succession) and non nsfw stuff. i just wanna move on and i feel like this blog was a part of my past, something i really don’t want to remember. i still love this blog, but if i stray away from zootopia people lose interest, when i was doing drawings of mod nobody but a select few actually liked them… i wanna be my own thing now and not be so closely associated with zootopia, and i want people to enjoy it… but right now the only audience i have is one of pure focus. i want to draw and i want people to enjoy what i draw, but thats not really going to happen at this current time… thank you tho for all the attention and i find it funny that my 1000th post is one ranting about the blog that got me this far

Everything by Memphis is A+ and I love it so if you haven’t you should check out more stuff by them ( No Ordinary Love is super nice, That’s Just Life is very dear to me and so is Divinity, Speechless is… my otp song for every otp ever tbh) -  Bring Me The Horizon is my fav post-hardcore band and both MMF and Chiodos are that genre so if you don’t know them give them a try! (Blasphemy, Run and Doomed are between my faves out of the latest album, and since you liked Under Your Halo you’re probably gonna like Follow You too) the album right before is amazing too if you’re okay with less melodic stuff, but the further back you go with BMtH the harder to listen to they get, just a heads up - Sleeping With Sirens are on the softer side of post-hardcore lately, Fly, Left Alone, Trouble, Fire and Empire To Ashes are some great ones, between the many, and, uhhhh, at this point I might have recced Nothing More a hundred times but let’s make it a hundred and one, try Funny Little Creatures, Do You Really Want It and Go To War out of the newest album! If you’re into punk and female voices you should check out Tonight Alive too, Jenna has one of my two fav female voices in rock right now (Crack My Heart and Temple are the latest two songs out!) and since I always rec stuff but I never rec anything by my favorite band ever, you ever heard of Alter Bridge? They’re more towards hard-rock/alternative metal, but check out Blackbird, Fortress, I Know It Hurts, Cradle To The Grave and Broken Wings just to make it one for every album I really, really adore this band and everything they ever made

More than headcanons for them I have an incredible amount of scenarios I’d like to see them in! And when they’re compact, complete things I usually draw them, which is what inspires me really haha that, and seeing them interact in the manga! Lately I’ve been really drawn to Bakugou and Kaminari’s friendship, actually, so the romantic stuff has fallen in the background while my mind is preoccupied with thinking about them as platonic good pals ahhhhhhh as soon as I’ll work through it I’ll probably get back to drawing them as romantics, that’s just how my mind works lol

It’s not a stupid question, don’t worry!! But I generally like to leave myself in Horikoshi’s hands for this sort of stuff, since I both enjoy the costumes as they are AND don’t want to be disappointed in case what I hope for doesn’t actually happen - that said, I’ve mentioned before that I’d really like Aoyama to get redirectors for his laser on his palms and for Kaminari to get a close combat weapon, since with the quirk he has anything metal would actually work wonders for him! He mentioned a sword, but I rest my case that tonfas would be cool, I really want him to use tonfas. A “costume” I don’t understand is Hagakure’s, by the way - would be nice if she got an actual costume and also I don’t really get why she’d wear gloves at all?? Mirio’s costume was made using his hair, I really want her to get something similar! That’s about it tho, I haven’t really thought much about anyone else in that sense~

“The Rise of Mash-Up Cinema”

In the opening minutes of Ralph Breaks the Internet, John C. Reilly’s Ralph and Sarah Silverman’s Vanellope Von Schweetz — stars of the film’s 2012 predecessor, Wreck-It Ralph — sit in a sort of Grand Central Terminal for video-game characters and play a round of “I Spy.” “I spy with my little eye, something that is round, yellow, and eats dots,” one of them says to the other. That something is, of course, Pac-Man. There’s a bit of banter about that fact, all of it only funny if you know who Pac-Man is. The bit is predicated on you being at least a little excited by the existence of Pac-Man in this movie, which is not a movie about Pac-Man. He’s making a special guest appearance, one brand hopping into another. That intended frisson of recognition, of wonder that a thing could cross over with another thing, is the foundation upon which the Wreck-It Ralph franchise is built.

As of 2012, such crossovers were a rarity. When critics praised the first film, they took note of how potent the idea was. “It’s impossible not to feel a strong sense of nostalgic amusement, if not sheer delight, at the comings and goings of all these characters,” said The Globe and Mail’s Dave McGinn in a characteristic write-up. “I don’t own an MRI machine, but I guarantee that just seeing Sonic the Hedgehog lights up the Gen X amygdala like a house on fire.” Not just Gen X, either: those younger could marvel at the presence of the host of Dance Dance Revolution, those older could giggle when the paddles and ball from Pong popped up. Street Fighter’s Zangief and Chun-Li waved hello, Q*Bert played a memorable role, and so on. It was a shock-and-awe tactic: viewers were supposed to sit back and wonder, How is any of this legal?

The answer is: it’s legal because, really, what corporation wouldn’t want to have its intellectual property appear in a cheery Disney cartoon that’ll be in front of the eyeballs of millions of consumers? All the House of Mouse had to do was ask, pay the licensing fees, and put the characters into situations deemed appropriate by the copyright holders. Everybody wins. The idea makes so much sense that it’s becoming increasingly commonplace. Indeed, it’s not unreasonable to expect that branded mash-ups are on their way to becoming a staple aspect of blockbuster cinema. It’s not necessarily a cheery thought.

The past 17 months will have seen the release of no fewer than four movies that fall into this basket. First came The Emoji Movie, a saga in which anthropomorphized pictograms ventured through an array of popular apps inside a teen’s phone. Then there was Ready Player One, the most infamous of these offenders, derided for relying on the weaponized nostalgia of an array of cultural artifacts from the 1980s and beyond. Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War brought together virtually every strand of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Spider-Man, a character Disney doesn’t own the film rights to but borrows from Sony. These were all hits of one size or another. The market is speaking.

It’s hard to imagine Ralph Breaks the Internet breaking that streak. It’s a decently written kids’ movie with a constant stream of amusing gags and comforting character beats. It offers up the kind of clean whiz-bang CGI visuals that we’ve come to expect in a post-Pixar animation environment. The voice acting is often delightful. But these factors, on their own, can only take the flick so far. What its creators clearly believe is that viewers will be over the moon at the melange of familiar brands that agreed to throw their lot in with Ralph and Vanellope.

There are appearances from game characters, but the real action this time around is in the tech sector. Thanks to a newly installed modem at the arcade in which they dwell, Ralph and Vanellope leave their respective games and embark on a quest inside the internet. The film’s visualization of the world wide web is a gleaming hyper-metropolis of flying vehicles and impossible skyscrapers, something between Tokyo and Coruscant. As our protagonists venture through it, they find all the behemoth brands made manifest: here’s the endless warehouse of Amazon, there’s a tower that Pinterest calls home, watch out that you don’t crash into the Fandango building — and why not make a little pit stop at Snapchat HQ?

“This is the most beautiful miracle I’ve ever seen,” Vanellope declares upon entering the internet, and we are given no reason to disagree. This is the digital utopia that tech CEOs verbally conjure when they attempt to sell us on their agendas, a marketplace of dollars and ideas where everyone’s free to satisfy their desires and escape the disappointments and inefficiencies of fleshy existence. Sure, there’s a brief excursion to the darknet, where viruses and scams lurk, but no brands appear there, and it’s presented as a marginal portion of the landscape. This is not the Internet as it truly is — Ralph encounters no racist Facebook memes, Vanellope never accidentally wanders into Pornhub — but rather as it is sold to us.

The brands are not strictly bits of set-dressing, either. The instigating conceit of the plot is that Vanellope’s arcade game breaks and, in order to save it from being decommissioned, she and Ralph attempt to purchase a replacement part via eBay. The filmmakers could have chosen a generic stand-in auction site, but going with eBay is a win-win for creators and licensors, alike. In this vision of the company’s service, fast-talking, old-timey auctioneers bark at the avatars of potential buyers in a bustling, capacious work space. Ralph and Vanellope don’t have sufficient funds to pay for the part and have to find the cash within a set time period, during which they’re periodically hit with automated reminders that take the anthropomorphized form of a plucky little bellboy (Ralph calls him eBoy). The soullessness of an online transaction is thus replaced by charmingly anachronistic human faces seeking to engage you as a human being. One can imagine an eBay boardroom erupting in delight at an early screening. There would be nothing for them to complain about.

The same goes for all of these excursions into cinematic corporate symbiosis. The Emoji Movie is a curdled yogurt of perfunctory storytelling and Bible-page-thin characterization, but it sure is nice to its beloved mobile apps. The heroic emojis ride a boat through the “music streams” of Spotify, dance their little yellow butts off in Just Dance, and satisfy their sweet teeth over at Candy Crush — and I’ll be forever haunted by my colleague Emily Yoshida’s description of hearing a child at a screening delightedly bellow, “It’s Instagram!” upon the appearance of the beloved photo app. Ready Player One was a binder stuffed near to bursting with pop-culture love letters: the leads hung out in the world of The Shining, drove around in a Back to the Future DeLorean, and fought a grand video game battle royale alongside the Iron Giant, Voltron, and Spawn, all of which accounts for maybe 1/1000th of all the references in the film. Infinity War was easiest to pull off from a licensing perspective, given that Disney owns the film rights to all the non-Spidey Marvel characters therein, and it is what all of these movies aspire to be: a billion-dollar picture that milks every bit of excitement that can come from having its various pieces of IP hang out together.

It’s long been obvious that studios are trying to ape the Marvel model by building their own cinematic universes in which various characters are established in their own movies and then thrown together for crossover appearances. But crucially, no one has succeeded in their imitation attempts. The DC Extended Universe is moving away from interlinked stories, the Valiant universe is years behind schedule, and only the maddest of scientists would say Universal’s monster-filled Dark Universe has a promising future. All of that leaves the higher-ups with a conundrum: how can you synthesize Marvel’s crossover thrills without going through the trouble of building a shared universe that people give a rat’s ass about?

Brand-synergy movies offer an alternative that’s expensive in dollars but cheap in creative effort. If you can’t build out a pantheon of characters that you convince an audience to become familiar with, why not just rent a bunch of properties they’re already familiar with, duct-tape them together, hoist them aloft before the camera, and declare that movie magic has been made? That way, the viewer gets to feel the thrill of seeing people, places, and things that come from different worlds coexist for a moment in time, but you don’t have to put in the work of establishing these properties.

It’s the next level up from mere cinematic adaptation. We no longer feel any particular elation when it’s announced that someone is making a filmed version of our favorite brand — that’s become de rigueur in the nostalgia economy. If you want to feel that old excitement, now you have to see your favorite brand be adapted in conjunction with another one of your favorite brands, and another, and another, until you have a filmic turducken of corporate interests. The ante has been upped, and as long as the big players in Hollywood can play nice with corporate partners, it will only elevate further.

This trend doesn’t have to be a death knell for creativity in blockbuster cinema. A turducken can be baked and seasoned well by the right cooks. The ne plus ultra of this phenomenon actually predates our present trend by 25 years: Robert Zemeckis’s 1988 Disney flick Who Framed Roger Rabbit? In preparation for Ralph Breaks the Internet, I rewatched Roger Rabbit for the first time since childhood and was amazed by how well it holds up. Sure, it gets its fair share of kicks out of constructing a world inhabited by classic Disney animated characters, their Looney Tunes competition, and a cavalcade of other cartoon stars. But their appearances in this surprisingly daring neo-noir are sparing and clever: Daffy and Donald Duck in an increasingly violent dueling-pianos competition, a black-and-white Betty Boop struggling to prove she’s still got it it in the world of color cartoons, a headline reading, “GOOFY CLEARED OF SPY CHARGES,” and the like.

Roger Rabbit uses these cameos as building blocks for story and world-building, not mere showing-off. Okay, there’s a little bit of showing-off — I mean, how cool is it that Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse signed a truce long enough to appear together for a gag in the third act? — but for the most part, these characters are present to help critique show business. The toons, disrespected by humans and isolated in Toontown, are stand-ins for marginalized groups (particularly black people) whose labor has fueled the entertainment economy while being exploited by greedy white people who exclude them from the highest echelons of the industry. When we see Dumbo literally working for peanuts, it’s not just a joke about elephants’ preferred diet, but also a way to make our hearts break at the injustice of one of our most beloved figures being nickel-and-dimed by a crass studio chief. There’s just so much good storytelling and acting — not to mention still-impressive integration of 2-D animation and live action — that you can’t help but get caught up in the ride. These things can be done well.

But it seems all too likely that they will be done poorly. One struggles to imagine brands being okay with Roger Rabbit–level subversion these days. It’ll all be focus-group-approved portrayals that advance the joint agendas of the creators and the companies, alike. The temptation to take a dull plot and spice it up with branded guest appearances is simply too strong. Such a process can create an illusion of familiarity and comfort that masks mediocre workmanship, and lord knows Hollywood will take any chance to spray a new perfume on a turd. To paraphrase Orwell: If you want a vision of the future, imagine Luke Skywalker and Jean-Luc Picard fighting Voldemort — forever.

I’ve been a fountain of funny lately

middle-aged woman friend named Helen: You guys were so perfect for each other, what happened

Husband: Yea, that’s what I thought until she liked and shared for a kid with cancer and not even 10 minutes later for a kid to go to Disney World. I ask her about it, she says she’ll stop. I try to reason with her about it but she ignores me and keeps playing candy crush.

Helen: *literally playing candy crush and listening to him*

Husband: Not even thirty minutes later I see one she shared for a husband who remembered to close the shower curtain ONE TIME without his nagging wife telling him to - he thinks he should get to ‘crack cold onez with dah boyz’ this coming Saturday. What’s next!? He puts the seat down and gets a beach vacation? She won’t even let me grill out in my spanking new New Balance sneakers and give the lawn a fresh cut with my ride-on mower without being on my ass about not spending enough time with her.

Helen, I put the seat down every. damn. time.

Helen: *still doesn’t get it, likes and shares another post on her feed* what about couples therapy? *opens up Snapchat and tries to get him to face swap, he refuses, she decides to take her 1000th puppy ears photo, sends it to literally everyone in her contact list. Goes on Facebook and posts an inspirational quote about sisters and tags her sisters and sister in laws in it*

Husband: *so used to being second place to social media isn’t even phased by this behavior because he has social media Stockholm syndrome so he continues talking*

Anyway, fifteen minutes later, I see that one where the veteran comes home after three years deployed and is crying while hugging and meeting his 3 month old daughter - which was dumb enough as it is - but its a jab at the football players who take a knee disrespecting that veteran. 🙄 I mean honestly, his wife is the only one that is disrespecting him.

Helen: oh I thought that one was so sad, I shared that one too. I can’t believe those football players just taking their freedom for granted. *immediately goes on Facebook and posts a picture of an eagle in front of a flag - one like one prayer for our veterans*

Husband: What’s next? She’s selling body wraps and hair products? We are already in over our heads in debt with her candy crush habit, I just can’t. *he looks like he’s about to lose it*

Helen: *looking up from her phone, showing him a post on her feed* did you see this one about the virgin teenage girl who got pregnant from a flu shot!? Unbelievable! More people should know.

Husband: *realizing that literally no other woman his age will be any better than his wife, decides to stay with his wife. Drives home. Walks through front door*

His wife, Darlene: honey I want a divorce. I just got an email from a prince in India and he wants to give me millions of dollars. I sent him all the information he needs and when he gets back to me I’m leaving

Husband: *walks right back out the front door. Drives off of a fucking cliff because he is trying to watch porn hub while driving*

In the firey wreck his phone dings.

Tara Vanderveer Wins Historic 1000th Game, Joining Only 2 Other Div I Head Coaches

On Friday, Feb 3, 2017, Tara Vanderveer, Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee and the Stanford Women’s Basketball Head Coach of 32 years, won her 1000th game against USC in a home game at Maples Pavilion. She joins only two other Division I Head Coaches in history with more than 1,000 wins, the late Pat Summit, who coached Tennessee Women’s Basketball, and Mike Krzyzewski, Duke University Men’s Basketball Coach.

She admittedly never set out to win 1,000 games, although her approach and the perennial powerhouse she has been able to masterfully create and maintain would say otherwise.

Vanderveer boasts an 81% win percentage, 71% in the NCAA Tournament, 2 NCAA Championships, 4 Big Ten Championships, 24 Pac-12 Championships, named National Coach of the Year 4 times, Regional Coach of the year 5 times, and Conference Coach of the Year 12 times. She’s also groomed many WNBA stars and champions, including myself.

When I think about what to say to honor Tara, on such a momentous occasion, it is hard to be concise, so many thoughts and memories come to mind. Her record speaks for itself, yet I’d like to add the human component to this milestone. She has given so much to the game of basketball, to her players, her competitors. Just imagine, when we first walk onto the Stanford campus our freshman year, we are children, all bright-eyed and green as can be. She is our guide as we traverse into adulthood, learning life’s lessons on the hardwood. And as expected, she has a way of being like “Mr Miyagi” only she always adds a few funny alliterations or other clever quips to illustrate her point.

She was one of my first coaches. She taught me the game of basketball. She was a student of the game and taught her players to be students of the game. She made sure we received not only a Stanford education academically, but that we received one athletically, as well.

And though we are like family, it is in moments like today, that I realize I’ve crossed paths with true greatness, an icon, a legend, someone who will do what few others will ever do. For all of that, more than congratulations and gratitude are in order. I’m guessing a permanent entry in the history books will do!
