cockatrice (part 2)

--
werewolf lore drop ahead!!
although werewolves are classified as a shifter-type monster (same as Horangi or the cockatrice) they're actually unique in a hidden way. Horangi is a hybrid whose lineology originates from the first pureblood haetaes, which had zero human in them. In comparison, werewolves originated AS a human-wolf monster, which results in an interesting relationship between the human and shifted 'full-wolf' form.
While Horangi is the same in his human and haetae form, Soap juggles two souls in one body - one belonging to human side, and the other to his wolf. They are both still implicitly him - the souls run parallel with one another throughout his life - but being a werewolf is very much like maintaining a life-long partnership. Soap and his wolf are a great example of a success story, but some werewolves have difficult relationships with their wolf, resulting in only transforming during full moons when they have to.
In some ways, Soap is perfect in the military's eyes as he has a strong connection with his wolf, and happens to come from a long line of larger-than-average specimens (even though he doesn't care too much about his genealogy, preferring to call himself a mongrel breed). In other ways, he's also a nightmare, because his wolf exemplifies the worst in his rebellious streak, featuring recklessness, fickleness towards authority and an extremely low tolerance for boredom.

Okay, so, I decided to have a little fun and traced one of the collages I made (posted all of them in a different posts) to both relax and practice line thickness, and HOT DAMN do I have more respect for background artists.
Those details CRUSHED me. But also O.O I noticed so many things in the background that I hadn't before. Like the horse mosaic on the wall, the lions jumping through hoops in the background, how the staircase isn't straight, it's curved, and just how many eye shapes there are in the hotel, damn).
I'm probably ALSO going to use this as a reference, because one can never have too many references, and like with my other ones, anyone is free to snatch this one up too if they want. Something about the absence of color and shadow just...help my brain with the shapes, you know?

[ID: digitally drawn fanart of Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. It recreates the scene in which Kipo finds out who her mother is and transforms into the mega-jaguar, along with Nael's poem, "The tiger" modified verses in-between the drawings. The first scene is a close-up of Kipo's eyes, she looks worried and tears are forming in her eyes, text below reads "The jaguar". The second image shows the mega-monkey, Kipo's mother, surrounded by Scarlemagne and other's flamingos, trying to fight them, the text below reads "She destroyed her cage". Third scene shows Kipo's eyes again, this time they're pink and her pupils are sharp like a cat's, she's angry and her tears come out, the text says "Yes"; onto the next drawing, she's on the floor on all fours, her arms have turned into the jaguar's and her tail has come out too, the text says "YES" in all caps. In the next scene she has turned into the mega-jaguar, roaring in anger, the text below reads "The jaguar is out". In the last scene, she's running towards the camera, still angry and roaring. End ID]
Inspired by and based on Nael's poem :>
I had this idea for a while, tried to execute it, failed and gave it a second try because Kipo's a very good show and this is one of my favorite scenes ever
Original poem: The tiger
The tiger
He destroyed his cage
Yes
YES
The tiger is out

– this whole - the dancing, singing, pole...raising. it is all rather ridiculous... 'midsummer'. i fail to... see the point of this human... invention. for once.
arvo's words were slurred, uneven - as if merely letting them past his lips was a great effort... this was, no doubt, influenced by the drink in his hand, resting on his stomach. folke, who had, in fact, brewed the alcohol that they were drinking, giggled - not exactly sober himself.
– i'm... the only human here, arvo. remember...
– no kraksi, or crakam, in sartrill, raises a huge, leafy pole for long summer days, that much i know.
– okay, haha - the pole thing... the pole thing is entirely human, probably. but... gullmar - tomtar, celebrate 'solvarvir' around the same time... trolls celebrate, uh... oh, curses, i'll butcher it... 'rawr - owa'... rawrr - oh wra? rawr... haha!
arvo opened one of his eyes slowly, fighting against some kind of weight that has, somehow, been set upon them - in order to look at the human beside him, still struggling to pronounce the foreign word correctly. a corner of the basilisk's lips twitched upwards.
– hm. nevermind what i said. there is a certain element of entertainment present, i suppose...
