This lesson sets up an assessment, assuming that students have already learned the fundamentals of how to construct a clear line graph using provided data.
EQ:
How can graphs be used to persuade the public of important concerns?
Do Now:
Students observe the graph in the original post, as well as a quick explanation of the SYG laws, and answer a few questions about the effectiveness of Florida Stand Your Ground Laws as measured by the graph.
Class Discussion:
Have students debate their responses. If any student groups caught the fuckery, reward them with candy or Class Dojo points or whatever.
Direct Instruction:
Show students how the original data was never altered, because that would be fraud by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Instead, they used tricky tactics to manipulate the presentation of the data. You should show students the data from the FDLE official website that clearly lays out how total firearm deaths jumped from 521 in 2005 to 740 in 2006 (a 42.0% increase).
Higher Order Learning:
Students work individually or in small groups to analyze the data from the official FDLE Florida Statewide Murder by Firearm, 1971 - 2020 (same as cited above) to answer the following question:
Is there any evidence that an increase in non-handgun firearms (such as automatic weapons) leads to an increase in the overall murder rate? Create a graph that presents your findings without any accompanying text except for title and labels.

So can we talk about the absolutely stunning duplicity going on here?

One of my favorite stories to tell about myself from when I was a kid is the story how my grandma’s “Catching Fairies” game was banned because of me
So when I was really little my grandma had this game she made up, she’d give me and all my cousins jars and containers and tell us that in her garden there were fairies but they were smart and tricky so they disguised themselves as caterpillars and butterflies and as grasshoppers and worms.
Whoever caught the most ‘Fairies’ won but we had to set them all free because they tended to the garden
One summer day my brothers were at the age they were dreading ‘girly’ stuff so I was playing alone
At this point I had met all the fairies in the garden and I was getting bored without any competition and with finding the same old fairies
But then just as I was begrudgingly heading back to my grandma with the same fairies as usual I found a new fairy!
I thought she was so beautiful! She was resting on the sparkly thread in the leaves and her black body gleamed in the sunlight, she had long legs and a cool red spot on her back
Excited I coaxed her onto my hand and was so giddy I found a new one! I rushed back to the farm house to show my Grandma and Dad, gently carrying my new friend.
But when my Dad and Grandma turned around to see what fairy I caught I saw the color drain from their faces and both of them freeze, I could tell something was wrong but didn’t understand
My dad congratulated me and asked me if he could see the pretty fairy, I let him but felt a little nervous seeing how terrified he looked as she moved into his hands from mine.
Slowly he walked back towards the door, my grandma clutching my shoulders then my dad LAUNCHED the fairy back into the garden which I thought was rather rude
Then we had a nice long talk about Black Widow spiders

i’ve started babysitting for a VERY christian family which is great because they pay me a lot of money but as someone who was raised almost completely agnostic it’s kind of insane. the 2 year old keeps asking me to read her stories from the bible. (why are we reading david and goliath to a 2 year old????) the 5 year old told me today that he was going to bring his legos to heaven with him. he also has repeatedly told me that the lego spaceships he builds are stronger than jesus. (not sure what to say to that. do i deny it??? are things allowed to be stronger than jesus??) had to stop myself mid sentence today because i almost told them im not going to heaven which would DEFINITELY have caused several meltdowns. they’re also both completely fascinated by my nose ring

it’s crazy how absolutely blatantly luigi’s constitutional rights are being breached and people seem more concerned about his appearance than a real, scary view of the power CEOs and the healthcare industry have over the legal system. like yeah he looks good in those photos i can appreciate that too but can we focus on the fact that the media is absolutely treating him as if he has already been found guilty. this could happen to anyone. anyone could be arrested over the death of a wealthy, influential person and the precedent being set right now is essentially that the prosecution can run wild and create documentaries declaring your guilt. like that’s really serious and scary.

Your first pride story was touching and all but you still married a man.
Yeah, bisexuals do that sometimes.

When I was young my dad offhandedly told me he thought people treated fish with so much casual cruelty because fish can’t scream.
The words branded themselves across my soul.
As an adult I think he may have been joking. He payed no especial attention to any indignities fish suffered in our household but I could never forget. I saw fish in a different light after that.
Fish kept in tiny bowls, breathing their own poisons, dying by inches. Fish kept in cold tanks, casually disposed of. Fish touted as being short lived when they could outlive the better loved family dog if only they could breathe. Fish casually won and discarded in cheap plastic bags, thrown away a week later.
How they would scream, if they could.
