omg is that a haunting of hill house fic i see!!! do tell do tell i'm dying to know more about it
Yes! Yes you do! Ok, so, I've posted about this AU before-- an excerpt of it can be found over here. And the original post that spawned in 2021 can be found over here. I've been slowly chipping away at this, mostly because I've never written horror this long before. Usually I have one-off ones, like the Cannibalism in Bastogne AU. But I am a firm believer in More Horror Stories In HBO War, because while the horrors of war are fun, I think we need to get a bit more freaky with it, so I will soldier on to get this published!

"Yes, there is a pool. It's where I first learned to swim," Lewis laughs. Looking up, he points at an overhanging balcony, about a story up, that extends, just about a foot away, from the lip of the pool closest to the house. "My sister and I used to jump into it from way up there, every morning."
"You did?" Don gasps, wide-eyed in awe. "Why?"
"So the water could wake us up," Lewis says, chucking his youngest under the chin when he laughs in disbelief. "It's empty, now, but there used to be water, of course."
On his other side, Joe rolls his eyes. But he's smiling, too. Just as intrigued as he always is, when he learns bits and pieces of family lore past their immediate brood. "Of course."
"There's some stuff at the bottom, Papa," Floyd says, suddenly, sitting up on his hunches to point at the broken blue tiles at the bottom. "It's all red."

The Haunting of Creel House is the official name for my thohh stranger things AU and honestly it's a mix of both the TV show and the book and my own little ideas.
The old Creel house stood, uninhabited for years, closed off to the public. Rumours of it being haunted, some say it's a portal to another dimension. Dr. Brenner, a paranormal investigator and scientist, decides to conduct an experiment. How would this house affect regular people. He decides to rent the house for the summer, declaring it open to only a select few, he personally chooses, who he believes, are the candidates for this experiment, because of their experiences with paranormal events.
Steve Harrington, a skeptic ex high school heart throb, whose house is located near the Creel house; Nancy Wheeler, an investigative journalist, who was very adamant about coming to the house; Robin Buckley, an anxious girl who claims she's had multiple paranormal experiences; James Hopper, the chief of police; Joyce Byers, a caretaker of the house, who's a single mother of three, along with two of her kids William Byers and Jane Byers, who have been suspected by the town to have a weird connection to the paranormal occurring in the Creel house.
The Creel house is taken care of by Joyce Byers and Bob Newby, who refuse to stay at the house in the night. Bob tries to talk Joyce out of going through with the experiment, however she refuses, saying it's for the safety of her kids. The seven visitors begin to form friendships as Brenner explains the building's history, which encompasses suicide and other violent deaths.
Throughout the story, the seven visitors experience all kind of paranormal encounters. It starts out small, like tapping on the walls or sounds of walking, though it escalates very quickly to seeing dark figures in the corner of their eyes.
Because of the paranormal, the vistors start forming all kinds relationships both in and out of the group.

Historical AU + I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On
Genre: Gothic Drama, 1950’s (if this fic had a soundtrack, it would be headlined by the cover of “Happy Together” by Filter.)
Set in the 1950’s as a The Haunting of Hill House AU, we are introduced to Lena Luthor as a pragmatic scientist investigating a mysterious mansion in Krypton, in which an affluent family suffered an untimely death. The sole survivor, Kara Zor-El—known as Kara Danvers—begrudgingly allowed Lena to conduct her little investigation, so long as Kara was allowed to shadow her.
“No one will admit this house is haunted, doctor,” Kara warned her the first day. “I will not be the first; I will say, however, that it is unsuitable for guests.”
“How so, Ms. Danvers?” Lena probed. “All I see is a house.” And she’d surveyed the scene and found the manor quite unassuming in nature. Its owner, on the other hand, seemed more of a mystery; Kara Danvers wore slacks and a shirt rolled to her forearms like a gardener might wear, and continuously pushed her round-framed glasses up her nose every time she seemed the slightest bit antsy.
The inside of the house was more promising, with winding hallways and endless turns that would find its occupants to emerge in the most unlikely of places. Doors would slam shut without a breeze in the air; fires would light in the fireplace without anyone near; the walls would shake and groan.
Kara did not live in the deserted town of Krypton any longer. She relocated with the Danvers family, who took her in as one of their own; she refused to allow any supernatural anecdotes to be her legacy. Lena respected that, as she had faced generous ridicule of her own right as a woman in her field.
“What notes have you made in your journals, Ms. Luthor?” Kara asked one night, as they lay in front of the fire with a bottle of brandy. This room was supposedly purple in color, but its walls seemed much darker, more sinister. “Has this house exceeded your expectations?”
“Very much,” Lena replied, and she rested her head against her palm and watched as Kara traced a fallen drop of brandy off her wrist with her tongue.
“I would like to clarify,” Kara said all at once, “that my insistence on accompanying you was never to influence your work. So if there is anything damning you might publish, I would not object.”
“Ms. Danvers, I daresay this house is not for the faint of heart, but I have not found proof it is haunted,” Lena said. “I may be the only ghost on its premise, yet.”
And Kara smiled, and unbuttoned the collar of her shirt so as to allow herself to relax, and light from the fire seemed to illuminate her skin. She was an extremely handsome woman, and Lena was drawn to her.
The investigations Lena conducted were simple in nature. She wandered the floors, slept in various rooms, went out to the gardens, visited the tower which she heard was the birthplace of many dark tales of murder and suicide told. She made extensive notes on her observations, and found the house to be much lonelier than she'd imagined.
“My theory,” Lena said, “is that the house might be the catalyst. It is the source of darkness, which entraps anyone who enters. You see—you see?” She traced a jagged cut in the wallpaper giddily, which spelled out welcome home, Lena in blood. “Suppose any tragedy that befalls its victims is the house's doing—”
Kara let her ramble, but her expression was pained, and her gaze hurt. “I thought—perhaps—you were different than the others,” she said. “But this…” And she gazed sadly at the ruined wall, placed her hands in her pockets, and exhaled with a weariness Lena had never witnessed.
“Ms. Danvers,” Lena immediately bristled. “You can't be serious. You believe me to make such jokes all in poor taste? At your expense?”
“I don't know what to believe,” Kara said. “Only that I have been down this road before, and I will not believe in ghosts or demons when a much more reasonable answer is before me.”
“Well,” Lena scoffed. “You've insulted me quite enough. And if you think so little of me, then I shall not remain in your way.”
She could not leave in the dark; no car would come, and she could not admit that she was a bit afraid of driving, herself. So she stayed in her room, and eventually Kara showed up at her door.
“Forgive me,” Kara said quietly. “I believe you, doctor. You are a brilliant woman, and I can freely admit I've been intimidated by your wit. I just couldn't bear the thought of you laughing at me.”
“Laughing at you?” Lena said, and she was dressed only in her nightgown, pressing her hands above her heart to quell its rapid movement. “I would never. You drive me crazy, Ms—” She pauses, then slowly moves closer. “Kara,” she said, and she swallowed thickly. “You don't know what you do to me.”
“To you,” Kara echoed, her gaze wonderous all at once, and she shyly placed her hand upon Lena's waist, only for Lena to trap her hands and clasp them tightly. “I'm sorry if I…overstepped.”
“Oh, I'm sure,” Lena whispered, their mouths just inches apart, and Kara had kissed her before any further conversation could be had.
Later, only after they'd ended up in Lena's bed, Kara had thought to ask if it was alright—if perhaps Lena was unsure. And in response, Lena had simply straddled her, and dragged Kara's hand between her legs, and Kara had apologized for that too in that earnest, crinkled-brow manner; and Lena had gasped for Kara to touch her until, finally, she did.
(All in all, Lena did quite a bit of investigating during her stay after all).

THOHH Role Reversal AU
@hugh---crain and i are writing an AU for the haunting of hill house where hugh is the one to be "sensitive" and affected by the house instead of olivia, and their entire roles are reversed because of this. some things that happen:
- the last night is changed around quite a bit, including hugh trying to kill steve instead of liv trying to kill the twins, hugh being the one to die, and more!
- steve is the one who goes back to the house and "kills himself" instead of nell
- liv always sees hugh's "ghost", who offers her support and keeps her grounded instead of giving advice
- arthur lives!!!!!
- the deaths are different than they are in the show due to the nature of the characters who die
- the story is told in reverse order of the siblings ages, from nell to steven, instead of steven to nell
- hugh designed the forever house
- shirley's character changes a bit, especially in terms of how she relates to the others
- a lot more changes happen with regards to the plot and the characters that we won't reveal at this time (spoilers...) but are very exciting so stay tuned!

The Haunting of Hill House AU please
ok so The Haunting of Hill House AU is based of Flannagan's show of the same name and not the original Shirley Jackson novel. Though I love both, the family dynamic in the show is what drew me in. Anyway, it was first spawned in this quick little post back in 2021 and has since become a real monster that I've been struggling to wrangle. It has explicitly trans!Lewis Nixon now! and it grapples with a lot of dysphoria that being trans and pregnant and also haunted by ghosts of dead little sisters and fathers brings!
Excerpt:
It starts with a house.
No. That's not right. For the kids, it starts with the house. Of course it does. They're kids, after all, and what little they understand of the world, they take it in stride. Nevermind that their mother is not really their mother, nevermind that she prefers to be a he. Nevermind that the name by which they know him by is not the name that is on the official papers. They don't mind, of course they don't, not when Papa gives them cuddles and tells them jokes and reads them stories until they sleep. Little by little, as they grow, Lewis finds it in himself to not mind, too. At least, not in front of them. So much of all of it doesn't seem to matter in the eyes of a child, and when all your life is preoccupied with a growing family and a loving husband, the intricacies of your own individual existence to the world you thought you wanted to be a part of washes away, quick, until all that matters is just five little boys with your real name on their lips and stars in their eyes. Until all the understanding you crave rests, safely, in the fragile chest of your husband, who has never seen you as anything but who you are. As his Lewis.
Lewis loves them. God, does he love them.
And for them, it starts with a house.
(It doesn't for Lewis.
For Lewis, it starts with Blanche.)

HILL HOUSE HILL HOUSE!!!
I tagged you to start writing smh Robin!/j
Ok so context: Joyce, Hopper, Steve, Robin, Nancy, Will & El are all in the Creel house! The place is haunted (if you couldn't tell), Alice is one of the ghosts who lives in the house, Alice Creel.
"We choose our house even before birth." Alice spoke suddenly. Everyone turned around, asking whispery questions between one another, while Alice was looking straight in front of her, almost through them. "Someone once said we are like a museum. Paintings and statues the memories of our past, but why must we suffer this way? So open, all our past pain and sorrow put on display. Expected to be beautiful. It needs to be entertaining for others." She was looking directly at them now, betrayal and hurt present on her pale face. "Why must we be museum? Pain is lived in" She smiled melancholy, tears started forming at the corner of her eyes. "Memories are lived in. Pain is a scratch on the wall. Coffee cup stains are the memories we made long ago. Our soul's body is our home...and once we die, we choose another" She started walking, dragging her left hand on the wall of the hallway. "Or it chooses us." She stops walking, takes the hand away and turns to the group. "This house chooses... no, not chooses. Takes..." She looked to the ground. "It takes and it takes and it takes..." "Until there's nothing left."
This is like a wip wip, like I wrote this scene yesterday when I couldn't sleep, it has not been polished or anything lmaooo

i am about half way through the novel of hill house and let me FUCKING tell you. eleanor had better end up getting romanced in this goddamn book rather than being fucking killed. the fact that nelly died in episode one of the show makes me incredibly nervous but that had BETTER be a netflix creation because if eleanor doesn’t get kissed and live happily ever after with theo and/or luke i’m going to riot

House anon- I think my other ask was eaten but you’ve got it spot on, I did in fact write chapters from other characters’ perspectives. However, Ben plays a bigger role in investigating what the House is because it essentially trapped him. Him and Klaus are essential to the story because they are both doorways to other worlds. Something I took from thohh is that young! Ben is haunted by his older, future dead self, which is where the time travel comes in. Five’s also has time travel tho ofc
How did I forget about Ben?! Of course he would be another doorway! (Fair warning, I’m about to go off on some character analysis with this doorway thing; some mind-bending allegory ahead that you in no way signed up for, Anon. Sorry?)  I love fics that compare and contrast the ‘darkness’ within Ben and Klaus, and how it might affect their dynamic: both are caught between the doorway - to continue the metaphor - of life and death, but Klaus has the power to open or close the door where Ben typically does not. But is that the only doorway? I’d suggest Ben is connected to another universe, where his Lovecraftian monster resides, whilst Klaus is the doorway between life and death itself. It’s only by virtue of Klaus that Ben is able to cross that threshold and reside in the world of the living as a ghost. ….Or does Ben crossover at all? Is it the curse of a ghost to just be stood as if at a window, watching the world go on without them?  After all, Reginald of the comics was able to travel multiple universes, but even he could not surmount the ultimate threshold of life and death. But, back to your fic. Ben as Nell? Now there’s a thought. Nell wanted somewhere to belong, wanted a perfect happy family. The Hargreeves were, by no stretch of imagination, a happy family either. So who wants the happy family, Anon? The house? Does it want to take bites out of the Hargreeves and keep them in its belly? Is it Ben? Ben’s monster? Or is it Klaus? Did he hold on so tight to the memory of Ben that Klaus trapped him there, creating a timeline that never should have been? Is the house trying to devour its occupants - devour itself, its shifting doors and rooms - to fix the timeline? And Ben can only bang on the window, the door - the door of his younger self… So. Many. Ideas.Anyway, my brain is just spinning its wheels. Seriously, great job Anon. I’m in awe of your ability to turn these ideas into prose. If you ever want to share your fic, or want to share more plot ideas, I’d love to read them.
