Hello everyone and hope your week is going well. I’ve just arrived in Inverness after a very cool road trip from Aberdeen so here’s a post I prepared earlier - the #coffeebookchallenge which I saw on @katereadbooks page! Espresso - a book that was hard to get through Betty by Tiffany McDaniel. This is a heartbreaking and horribly sad book with multiple trigger warnings. However it’s also one of my all time favourites 😍 Mocha - an emotional read Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell This won the @womensprize a few years ago and I’ve never cheered so loudly for a book that has won before. Adored this story!! 😍 Latte - a sweet read The House In The Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune Another one of those books I recommend to everyone I meet. I fell in love with every single one of the characters - a real feel-good novel 🥰 Cappuccino - a book that everyone has read but me 🙈 Am I the last person in the world to read The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman? Macchiato - favourite book of the year Brickmakers by Selva Almada I have quite a few books of the year so far, it’s been a great reading year but this is the one that’s jumping out at the moment. Translated by Annie McDermott and available from my new favourite publisher @charcopress this small but mighty novel packs an almighty punch! IL libro migliore del mio 2022. Una fama meritata totalmente, che mi spaventava visto quanti lo avevano adorato. Molto molto forte, ma bellissimo. Resta come un pugno nello stomaco e si crea spazio nel cuore. Ahimè, io sono a dir poco pessima nel fare opinioni sui romanzi che ho amato. Li sento molto di pancia, di cuore, mi faccio trascinare e descrivere cosa sento durante tutto il viaggio è...praticamente impossibile (per me). Ho provato anche sul blog (link in bio). Ne avevo scritto qualche riga tempo fa, mai modificata perché non trovo le parole adatte. Probabilmente sarà uno di quei romanzi che leggerò ancora, per tentare di capire meglio cosa ho amato così tanto e magari quel giorno avrò le parole giuste per raccontarvelo. Ma nel frattempo, sicuramente lo stra-consiglio! Virginie a su qu’elle pouvait me le prêter. Je n’aurais pas aimé, elle m’aurait probablement bannie de sa vie. Nous avons pleuré, pas de concert, mais dans les larmes l’une de l’autre… Sur nos serviettes de plage, au soleil, dans l’eau, en rando… "Betty" était l’objet de nos meilleures conversations, et c’était bien bon. Qu'il est difficile de refermer un livre qui fait écho en nous... Avec Betty, Tiffany McDaniel nous immerge dans le quotidien des Carpenter, inspirés de sa famille maternelle. Un père cherokee, une mère blanche et huit enfants. Parmi eux, Betty. C'est à travers ses yeux que le lecteur prend la mesure du racisme et de la misogynie sévissant dans l'Amérique profonde des années 1960-1970. Des moments très durs côtoient les envolées poétiques apportées par les légendes cherokees. Cela permet à l'autrice d'aborder des sujets difficiles, comme l'inceste, la dépression ou la violence, sans jamais plomber son récit. Elle insiste également sur tout ce qui a pu apporter à Betty la force de grandir et de se construire dans un monde fermé : l'imagination, l'écriture, l'amour de la nature, le lien à son père, et bien sûr la sororité. La relation des trois filles Carpenter, toutes extrêmement différentes, est d'ailleurs l'un des points forts du roman. Un livre très fort, que je vous recommande chaleureusement. 💬 "Non seulement papa avait besoin que l’on croit à ses histoires, mais nous avions tout autant besoin d’y croire aussi… Nous nous raccrochions comme des forcenées à l’espoir que la vie ne se limitait pas à la simple réalité autour de nous. Questo libro è una storia di dolore e speranza, è vero, crudo e fortissimo. Un libro in cui a tratti ci si immedesima e si trova posto nella sgangherata famiglia Lazarus, provenendo da quello stesso Caos che è l’origine di tutto. La mancanza è in qualche modo opportunità; ed è la dimostrazione che le storie che ne nascono tengono viva ogni cosa. Una lettura a tratti sconquassante, davvero, ma da cui non riesci comunque a staccarti. Ti fa piangere (moltissimo), ti fa male, ma la vivi fino in fondo. Come la vita.
