I really hope that Spider gets to visit Neteyam, gets to see his little brother and play in the memories of the good times. the times before their bond faded. before Neteyam pulled away and became crushed beneath the wait of his parents and clans expectations.

maybe Spider is war-torn and grizzled, while his best memories of Neteyam keep him young and naive of the horrors of the world. maybe when he gets to hold his brother again, his hands calloused and skin scarred, while Neteyam's are tiny and soft.

they can play tag and hide and seek and go fishing. they could just be kids. Spider can escape war for mere moments to just. be at peace. and he'd hug him so tight the kids squeaking "I can't breath, stop!" giggling up a storm. and Neteyam doesn't question why his brother is so much bigger than he remembers, cause he makes a much comfier napping spot.

and maybe Spider gets to see his brother's face, older, but not so tired and worn. his eyes have a younger spark in them, his smile is less weighed down and tight at the corners. his shoulders stronger and held high, no longer bearing too heavy a burden. he can hug this brother freely and tell him he loves him and call him 'brother' without agonizing tension and distance. a chasm in his chest filling in slightly.

knowing his brother is free and happy in Eywa brings him peace.

been hearing rumors that the "i'm always straight" lines may have been cut from the GN and IF that is true, I expect everyone will be super mad about that--and ngl i'd mourn the loss of it too because it has become iconic to me

But. i can't believe i'm playing devils advocate for this, BUT it is not entirely unreasonable for an adaptation of this work to decide it does not want to reference Ronan's sexuality yet......coming to terms with his sexuality is (one) part of his arc in the 2nd book. Adam Parrish being ~the 2nd secret he doesn't want to admit to himself~ , Ronan's catholic guilt homoerotic nightmares and the like, all characterize his sexuality as something he might vaguely be aware of but seriously struggles to openly admit. I don't think he even uses the word gay or any other word to describe himself in the whole series? (unless I'm forgetting something?)

So, idk, it's not unreasonable to want the (hypothetical) audience to also not be aware of it until Ronan is forced to directly grapple with his identity next book.

i think this is one of those things that has become very dear to the fandom over time, but if i look at it objectively without my feelings, i just.....i do understand why someone could conceivably decide that this off-handed bitchy "he's gay btw" joke is not of dire importance for the sanctity of the story 😭 in the 'pros don't outweigh the cons' sort of way....

I have been having a lot of trouble with writing my thesis, as I have annoyingly made you all know. I've also been down the path of confession to my advisor and we both agree it's an issue of self sabotage and writer's block and whatnot.

Anyways.

I was teaching my class today, and thinking how much better the class goes when students participate, and by that I don't mean just readings and information -which is very important too, don't get me wrong- but also and first, when they ask questions. How much easier it is for me to present the material to them when I can work from their questions and then their facial expressions, reformulations, and follow up questions. And I thought, "what I need is something like this but for thesis writing", and the tumblrina brain immediately answered:

I tried drawing young mithrun but ended up with an attempt for a kbms lovechild so uh:

MYRTLE (84)

Half-elf/born in Melini

Assigned female at birth/non-binary

Grew in tallman pace until they suddenly stopped growing at 20 years old

Currently working for their uncle (Kerensil Trading Company) in Melini but wants to be an adventurer

Close with their parents as a child but developed a strained relationship with Mithrun and Mithrun's struggles with rying and finding desires (worsened when Kabru died but they're both all good now)

More stuff under the cut:

Myrtle was actually an 'accident' and Mithrun carried them for 4 years (someone shared a HC that elves have a gestation period of 4-5 years so I'm borrowing that lol)

Myrtle spent most of their childhood in the Golden Kingdom and was visited by his uncle (Mithrun's brother) and Milsilril (who they call Auntie but at one point called her 'Grandma'). They are more familiar with Tallman/Golden Kingdom and Utayan culture, but not acquainted with their elven roots (they actually find Western elves intimidating)

Kabru did his very best sharing what he remembers of his hometown; Mithrun had assimilated into the Golden Kingdom way of life at this point and found some (most) of his elven noble ways too cumbersome

Myrtle was a kind child who grew up doted and loved by his parents and relatives. And they love their family with the same ferocity. But growing up, Myrtle was quickly made aware that his father, Mithrun, was 'not normal' - in most days, he was okay; in others, he struggled to get out of bed. In rare days, Mithrun was completely catatonic, and seeing Mithrun unresponsive, staring at the distance, scared Myrtle so much that he became somewhat of a troublemaker child, so that Mithrun always has to act and respond and not have anytime to be lost in his thoughts.

At some point, Myrtle 'disliked' Mithrun for the way that he is, not understanding his situation at all. Myrtle thinks that Mithrun does not love them enough to be better, feels ashamed that they cannot do anything to help Mithrun be better. But Myrtle's feelings on Mithrun comes from a place of love and ignorance - love because they do genuinely love their Father; and ignorance because they were never told why Mithrun was like that (Myrtle heard of what the dungeons were, but Kabru nor Mithrun never bothered to tell of the demon, Mithrun being the dungeon lord, or the full extent of the destruction of Utaya)

Once Myrtle became aware of their parent's pasts, they understood them a lot better.

Also thinking that a point of friction that Myrtle had with his parents was their dream of becoming an adventurer and fighting monsters (which were still rampant, though weaker) and Kabru insisting that they choose any other dream but that. Myrtle in their teenage years found Kabru too strict, too protective, not that Mithrun wasn't. But Mithrun at least was willing to teach them how to fight; Kabru made it clear Myrtle was not allowed near even a walking mushroom. Learning that Kabru was from Utaya, and what exactly happened in Utaya, made Myrtle understand why.

Eventually though Kabru concedes, knowing that Myrtle is much more capable, and surrounded by their own friends and comrades who will support them. I think in the last years of his life, Kabru made sure to prepare everything that will help Myrtle in his adventuring journey if they chose to embark once he is gone - such as speaking with guilds all over the content, ensuring a diplomatic immunity for Myrtle when they're in ally countries, writing an annotated adventure guide just for them, etc.

They work as a Vice-Manager of the Kerensil Trading Company (Mithrun's brother's merchant empire), but that's just a gloried name for the position of intern. Mithrun technically manages the Kerensil Trading Company branch in Melini, and is being pestered by Mithrun's brother to take over the main branch so that Mithrun will move back to the West. Mithrun is unmoved so Mithrun's brother has plans to declare Myrtle as 'heir' of the Kerensil merchant empire, all for the purpose of having his brother and niece move to the West (Mithrun's brother does not see the point of Mithrun and Myrtle staying at the Golden Kingdom any longer after Kabru's death)

(The beauty mark next to Myrtle's right eye is something that they got from Kabru's mother)

Amazing, take some of the side character demons from Evil Bound.

Vincie is a menace to Chuck and Chuck alone so in Hell, Chuck hexes his hand behind his back so that he isn't grabbed as much (and it's harder to pet him). Chuck is like the most irresponsible older sibling ever to demons though so Kelvin recruits him (as an older sibling vibe) to go help him get his ACTUAL older sibling from Earth. Chuck agrees. And then drags Vincie from Hell with them because no one else wants to babysit him and he refuses to unbind the hex just to re-hex when he returns to Hell.

In Hell, Kelvin actually doesn't appear much different than his human form! Like Kronos, the lines under his eyes are red in Hell but black on earth. Chuck however? In Hell he has wolf-ish ears and has a fur lining his neck (note the neck scars in human form). In addition to that he has four eyes in Hell (note the scars under his eyes in human form). Vincie just has horns in Hell. And! In Hell the hex doesn't have a silly looking "tied up" look, it's invisible unless Vincie strains it with movement and then its red text. But it shifts on earth to be visible.

Vincie's biggest agony for the entirety on earth is "dude it's colder here than in Hell I want a jacket to slip my arms into BUT I CANT BECAUSE IM BOUND".

and at the end of ch3, we see the roaring knight in person for the first time

the roaring knight, who is heavily implied to be a lightner. who kris is very much in contact with in ch4. who shows up seemingly out of nowhere. who very likely gave kris the command to create the dark world.

now i'm not saying kris did it deliberately to let the roaring knight into their house and therefore into the dark world they created but the evidence kinda piles up here.

yes man and six met after six's "confrontation" w benny where they were basically like "what if you didnt kill me actually" and benny was like "hmm. fair point. okay" and then ran away lmao . they were searching his suite for clues and then opened a door and got jumpscared by a whole securitron standing there lol. they didn't like him at ALL when they first met, but by the time they'd gotten the chip back and got ym installed in the lucky 38 they were so shaken up by the events of the like, past 2 days lol that they just told ym to get in his securitron body and they left the strip with no real plan. yes man felt like the only person they could trust, and that was half bc they didn't even really see him as a person yet, but their time alone together got them to build trust in each other rly quickly as six regained confidence in themself . its a whole thing lol

six and benny's first meeting was literally benny shooting them in the head lmao but they don't really remember that happening tbf. while they were trying to get to new vegas for the first time benny was kinda an Idea to them more than a person, and they kinda had the impression he had some big master plan or something. but by the time they actually meet him again it quickly became obvious not only that he's kinda a loser and a huge asshole but also that both of them are Very quick to fuck w each other (him flirting w them enough to lead them into a trap, them asking very nicely to not be killed, benny being like "this isnt like me at all but fine", and six was like Oh Im In Your Head Now Fucker) and that's also the moment six knew they were kinda into him a little bit lmao
