James Waudby has been in bands for decades, starting in the late 1990s with Salako, which made three records and a Peel Session and toured with Pavement. Pavement drummer Steve West later tapped Waudby for his Marble Bay project and the musician also sings lead in Horse Guard Parade. On the Ballast Miles, however, resembles none of these projects. It’s a spare, lovely 1960s’ influenced folk classic and one of the best albums of 2023 so far. In his Dusted review, Christian Carey observed, “Waubdy’s guitar-playing, in particular, displays an intricacy that belies its dynamic level. Harmonics, pitch bends, dissonant verticals, and drones create an atmosphere that sits astride blues and folk.”

Here’s a list of some of the albums that I continually return to. I suppose they could be filed under good tunes played in an interesting way.

Royal Trux — Cats and Dogs

I used to listen to John Peel’s late-night Radio One show in the early nineties when one night, as I was dozing off, “Spectre” by Royal Trux came on and it totally changed everything. I realized there were no rules and nothing was off limits. You could write a good tune and play it any way you liked.

Townes Van Zandt — S/T

I listen to Townes Van Zandt, and I believe everything he says. Undiluted, raw song craft. Some of the bleakest songs, but also very beautiful. “Waitin' Around to Die” is the classic, but every song on this record is genius.

Shirley Collins and Davy Graham — Folk Roots New Routes

The arrangements on this album are mind blowing. In some songs they fit together effortlessly and in other songs you marvel at how Davy Graham came up with such inventive arrangements. And throughout, Shirley Collins’ voice serenely sings in her own beautiful style. It must have been amazing to hear this album when it first came out.

Matthew J Rolin — S/T

There’s so much great instrumental guitar music coming out at the moment and all the players have their own style, but Matthew J Rolin is always so tuneful. I love all his records, but this one just pips the others as my favorite.

Neil Young — On the Beach

If I could only listen to one artist for the rest of my life it would have to be Neil Young. There’s so much depth in his work, especially the first decade period. I could have chosen any album, live record, or bootleg, but the lyrics on this LP are some of his best. Another week I might have chosen After the Gold Rush. It’s all amazing.

Plush — More You Becomes You

It is so hard to make an album sound this simple and convey so much feeling in such a short selection of piano-led song sketches. Just stunning from start to finish.

Karen Dalton — In My Own Time

This album is perfect. Not sure there is anything else I can say about it.

Toby Hay — New Music for the Twelve String Guitar

New Music For The 12 String Guitar by Toby Hay

A brilliant Welsh guitarist who has been producing some great instrumental records on his own and with Jim Geddes. I think this one works the best as a whole piece of work. The recording envelops you and he has a beautiful guitar.

Robert Wyatt — Ruth is Stranger than Richard

This album should be a multi-million seller. I can’t understand why it is never in the top ten lists of all-time best albums. Robert Wyatt’s body of work will stand the test of time, but this record stands out. Playful, great tunes, insightful lyrics — what more could you want?

Bert Jansch — Jack Orion

The best album ever made? I think so. With similar tunings throughout, and the same guitar riffs reappearing, the album feels like a suite of folk music rather than a collection of songs. Tracks like “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and Jansch’s masterpiece, “Blackwater Side,” stand out, but the sequencing of the songs to create an ebb and flow draws you in so you can’t stop listening until every note has finished.

The Moldy Peaches – Brooklyn Steel – August 10, 2023

The Moldy Peaches rose out of the downtown antifolk scene around the turn of the millennium, becoming a cult band thanks to their live performances and several recorded releases (including some on CDR). They broke into the mainstream when the chart-topping Juno soundtrack came out in 2007. And a year later, the Moldy Peaches were broken up. But you can’t keep a good band down, and after playing three dates in Europe this past spring, the reunited Moldy Peaches put on their first headlining U.S. show in two decades last night at a very welcoming Brooklyn Steel.

Before taking the stage, they put on the Moldy Peaches Talent Show with performances by band members doing two-song sets: Guitarist Toby Goodshank went first, followed by Bass Race (featuring bassist Steven Mertens), then Only Son (guitarist Jack Dishel) and the pop duo Candy Boys (with drummer Brent Cole).

After the talent show, Kimya Dawson’s aunt Patrice Jetter, a disability-rights activist, addressed the audience. Then the Moldy Peaches took the stage in costumes. They played straight through with no encore, Dawson joking that they’d played all 21 of their songs. But for the finale, she and Adam Green performed as a duo, like they first did when they began in the late ’90s.

hmm. I do enjoy the whole aspect of maple being a project safalin genuinely enjoyed working on. To see her creation flourish and grow was all she ever wanted,,, when maple was used for hiyori's purposes, ofc it upset safalin :[ she wasnt in any place to oppose it however so. Oh well.

Theres also the idea that maple saw safalin as her main source of what human life is actually like, often asking her questions abt even the most arbitrary things,,, it was mostly stuff saf deemed silly, but she didn't mind talking abt herself and what her life was before asunaro. It was,, refreshing.

With you being so wild and boisterous, Slender Man made it a habit to save plenty of leftovers for you. He then tucked you away with him in his big office, glad when he sees you finally unwind and enjoy a snack to yourself. He liked having quiet time with you this way

Masky💖

Your cheery and playful nature certainly wasn’t something Masky was used to (besides Toby’s annoying antics). He thought you were adorable though, and wanted to protect you at all costs

Had never moved so fast in his life when you jumped over the table and onto Jeff because he took away your food. Masky was worried you were gonna hurt yourself or get into trouble. So he leapt after you and yanked you off Jeff. You and him were just having fun though, acting like a pair of playful dogs

At the end of the day, Masky was gonna love you no matter how you were. He adored you, as you made his life 100% better and brighter. He also made sure to never take your leftovers

Brian kinda matched your enthusiasm, but he wasn’t as gleeful as you were. He really enjoyed your company, always having plenty to talk about with you. Hoody tried to remain stone cold in front of the others, but your sweet nature always made him melt

Couldn’t believe how protective you were of your frigging food. You and him were chatting at the dinner table, when Masky came over to take your plate. Apparently you weren’t done eating, and shot out of your seat, towards the masked man. Hoody couldn’t help but giggle under his own mask, thinking you were adorably hilarious

He loved having you around. He was never bored when he was with you. Hoody was possessive of you at times, as you were pretty much the light of his life <3

Toby thought you were a riot! The two of you were always getting up to no good. Your energy matched his perfect and that made him crazy. Toby was obsessed; he had never met someone like you

He purposely took your snack away when you weren’t looking, excitedly waiting for you to notice. When you looked down and saw your food was gone, your eyes immediately locked on Toby. You launched yourself at him, playfully tackling him to the kitchen floor. Any creeps that walked in to grab their own snacks immediately walked back out, as they knew your play fighting always turned a bit graphic

Not only was Toby in love with you, you were also his best friend. Wherever you went, he followed. You and him were to paint the world red with your crazy shenanigans

BEN thought you were so fun to be around. He enjoyed your boisterous and playful nature very much. His favourite thing to do with you was play video games. You were a great gaming buddy

Your hyper and cheery nature could be a little too much for Jack at times. He himself was very quiet and broody; your exact opposite. But don’t worry, he also thought you were super cute and sweet too

Jack could kind of get it when you got possessive over your food. Except the fact that what he ate was human organs, and what you ate was, you know… normal
