Shedding Some Light

Pairing: Nikolai x Cameron

Word Count: 1044

A/N: IM SO SORRY THIS TOOK AO LONG BBYYYY 😭😭😭 It’s be an incredibly hectic holiday at my mother’s and I’m only just getting the time to write this short little gift for you. I hope you enjoy it regardless but!!! Surprise!! I was your Secret Santa! Happy Yuletide @ohworm-writes !!!!

CW: Pagan holiday, exclusive to Cam and Cam only!!!!!, possible tradition inaccuracies ;-;

The spoon clinks with each turn it makes in the rich and warm chocolatey liquid. The smell brings a smile to their face. They’re already looking forward to diving into the treat alongside their lover as they stand here making it. The spoon drips hot cocoa as it is lifted out of the mug and is set inside the sink. The soft and fluffy marshmallows are easily plucked from the bowl that was set aside just before starting the creation of the hot drink. The marshmallows are large, squishing pleasantly in their fingers as they drop three into each mug. The creamy fluff immediately melts on the surface, covering the entirety of the beverage.

“That should be enough marshmallows.” Cameron mutters to themself, lifting one of the two mugs into each of their hands before turning to walk out the kitchen.

But they pause and observe.

The home is beautifully decorated for the solstice. Garland made of evergreen and fresh pine cones topped with a thin layer of fake snow lace the entryways of the home- including the one to the kitchen Cam stood under currently- as well as across the fireplace and a bookshelf that stood in the entryway hall. On those shelves, however, are also a few candles that are placed carefully in the middle of the garland. They gave a warm, dim glow into the comfort of the home the two shared.

A Yule tree is decorated with garland that Cameron and Nikolai spent hours putting together, as well as dried slices of orange and lemon that Cam had put hooks though to hang on the tree’s branches. Nikolai had brought miniature fake candles and sun shaped ornaments to put on the tree too.

A special gift that Nikolai had created by hand was the metal tree topper that was also sunshapped. It was something that the both of them were surprised that it was kept quiet about until the surprise was revealed to Cameron just earlier this week. It did explain a lot to them, though. Why Nikolai was suddenly spending an incredible amount of time in the shop- which, in itself, is saying something, as we all know that Nikolai would gladly spend hours upon hours working on his helicopter- was a big question that occured often. Turns out he had even used scrap metal from his precious helicopter to make it, cutting, bending, engraving, and heating the metal to give it the yellow, shiny appearance it has now. A light shone behind it to make its silhouette glow against the walls around it.

The smell of warm cinnamon lingers in the air and Cameron turns their attention to its source.

Nikolai is sitting at the coffee table putting together the dried sticks of the spice around a glass dish meant to catch the wax of melting candles. His tongue is pressed against the inside of his cheek and his brows are furrowed with concentration. One stick of cinnamon is held in one hand while the other carefully applies the hot glue against the side of the glass with a steady hold on the hot glue gun. The glue gun is set back down on a piece of cardboard- it being used to keep the hot glue from dripping on the glass table and ruining it- and the cinnamon stick he held is pressed carefully on top of the hot glue and beside the already glued down cinnamon. It was gently pushed up with a large finger to make sure it was even before Nikolai picks up another stick from the package to his left and the hot glue gun to his right.

Cameron felt their heart soar a moment more for the man who stole their heart almost a year ago. The effort Nikolai was putting into enjoying the holiday lined with their belief made them feel so much more grateful to have Nikolai in their life once more. They should’ve known that once Nikolai set his heart on celebrating Yuletide, there was no stopping him. He truly went above and beyond, and is still doing so, just for them.

Nikolai sits in jeans and a fluffy, white sweater that matches his love’s, as well as some fluffy socks they just insisted that he wore too. He doesn’t notice Cameron yet, too busy focusing on the mini project he was determined to finish. That was until they placed his mug on the coffee table in front of him, causing him to pause and look up at them.

A large and loving smile easily pulls at his lips, setting both items back into their respective places. “Спасибо, дорогой!” His eyes lit up at them, almost hesitating to look away as he reaches for the hot ceramic mug. Cameron sits beside him, carefully blowing the steam from her own drink.

“Thank you,” Cameron emphasizes, “You didn’t have to do all of this.” A hand gestures to the flurry of decorations around the house as Nikolai takes a sip.

A hum of satisfaction slips past closed lips, visibly relaxing at the warmth the hot cocoa provided for him. The mug is rested carefully against his thigh, one hand holding the cup up. His other hand rests on their thigh, each of them holding a soft and grateful look in their eyes.

“Do not thank me, дорогая. I’m more than happy to celebrate your traditions with you,” Nikolai says firmly and confidently, “I’ve had a great time enjoying this holiday with you, Cameron.”

They smile back lovingly up at him, eyes moving from his own to his lips. A sudden snort of amusement follows, biting onto their bottom lip as they look back up at him. Nikolai raises a brow at the evolving giggles falling from their lips. “What’s so funny, дорогая?”

Cameron clears their throat, smile still present. Their hand raises and points at the area above their own lip, “You’ve got a little something…” Their voice trails off as Nikolai carefully raises his own hand and wipes the fluffy marshmallow from above his lip with his thumb. There was a moment of silence as he stared at the sugary substance before he too laughed at the sight, Cam’s laughter joining in as they enjoyed the serenity of the moment together.

5. Do you respond to comments? yes! if you are kind enough to read one of my fics and leave a comment, i always do my best to reply, even if it's just a string of heart emojis.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? probably Like Attracts Like - it's a companion piece to my legend of korra mash au sometimes you hear the bullet, and ends with zhu li (the radar of the story) getting word of varrick's plane going down a la henry blake in abyssinia, henry. truthfully, i'm not a big writer of angsty endings. angsty beginnings and middles, definitely, but i prefer all my fics to have a happy ending.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? see basically all of my fics have happy endings, but i think the happiest ending i've written goes to the end of I Know I'm Home, my robisanya au where sam matched with dani on bantr and not rebecca. in the final chapter, all the loose ends get tied up: richmond wins the premier league, roy and keeley get married, and sam and dani have the 'i'm going to marry you someday' talk. nothing but sweetness all around.

8. Do you get hate on fics? the only hate i've ever gotten on a fic was for one of my star wars sequel trilogy rewrites, and that was from some reylos who didn't like the anti-reylo things i was saying on my star wars sideblog, so... nah.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? i do and i have definitely gotten better at it over the years (though i still have a Long way to go lmao). i've only published m/m, but i've written some f/m smut (as you will see when i publish my degas/paris fic next year 😏)

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? indeed i do. craziest (or at least most ambitious) has gotta be there's a raging fire in my heart tonight, my top gun/mcu crossover. (craziest crossover i've ever come up with is the night court / perry mason hbo crossover that @saltyfilmmajor and @bornforastorm have been enabling me to write)

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? yes! when i see your face has been translated into korean and chinese, Lead Me On (To The Other Side) has been translated into korean, and (I Love You) A Bushel and A Pallet and Moving In Slow Motion have both been translated into chinese.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? yes, i wrote baby, baby, i'd get down on my knees for you with @academicgangster and wrote Austin Alone with @lilalbatross

14. What’s your all time favorite ship? i'm picking three for how they have influenced me and my writing: boasami, finnrey, and icemav.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? there are So Many of these....my google drive is essentially a graveyard of unfinished wips

16. What are your writing strengths? dialogue for sure. i've also been told my characterization is great and i have good comedic timing.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? action scenes and smut

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? i've done this before - usually i run it through google translate and then check other translation sites to be sure it's as accurate as possible. i've included the to-english translations in some fics (namely my top gun ones where i've written ice speaking russian) but mostly leave out the to-english translations these days. usually when my characters speak a different language you can pick up what they're saying from context.

19. First fandom you wrote for? the first fandom i wrote for was (i think) icarly, but the first fandom i published fic for was legend of korra.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written? varies depending on the mood i'm in (and also i have written a Lot of fic so it is difficult to choose lmao). right now i'd say Word on the Street - i'm still really proud of how that one came together.

(It's not a secret that oneofthosebells is a burner pseud I created just to write YR fic for Reasons I won't bore you with here, so the below is combined across pseuds.)

What fandoms do you write for?

I tend to be monofannish, so only Young Royals right now! My main fandom for a few years before that was Ballum (an EastEnders pairing), and I've written for various other sources over the last 20 years including several one-off fics in tiny fandoms for Yuletide.

Do you respond to comments?

Usually! I tend to be all or nothing - I try to reply to every comment, but if I'm struggling to keep up, I sometimes end up not replying to any at all for a few weeks and then it feels daft to reply after that long.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

None! I don't like angsty endings, happy endings all the way round here. Probably the only one that even vaguely counts is Say a Little Prayer, which is a missing moment from canon from a very angsty episode - but even though it ends on a sad note, if you know the show you know they get married a few days later so it's still not that angsty.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Hoping that if I can get my writing brain into gear I will soon be able to give several YR fic answers to this question...!

From my non-YR fics...almost all of them? But let's say Beginner's Luck because of the light-hearted romcom vibes throughout. (Or maybe My Heart Won't Let My Feet Do Things They Should Do, because it's not just happy from a ship pov, but also has a character coming to terms with his hearing loss, taking up dance again for the first time since he was 12 AND standing up to his homophobic, ableist dad.)

Do you get hate on fics?

Not recently, doesn't seem to be much of a thing in YR fandom thank goodness! In the past...yeah. (Soap opera fandom is toxic af.)

Do you write smut?

Yep. Not very well. 😂 I put it in stories that seem to need it, but mostly I tend to go for a M rating rather than E because it's really not in my comfort zone to write the explicit stuff. Never written PWP. (I tried to, once, but it ended up full of feelings and a bit of plot anyway!)

Craziest crossover:

Never written a crossover, never really wanted to. I keep my fandoms separate lol.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Hope not! Not aware of it if so.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, but I'd love to. Me and a friend kicked around an idea a few times, but never came to anything.

All time favourite ship?

Eep. Please don't hate me if I don't say Wilmon! I love them to pieces, I really do, but honestly I hyperfixated on their story and the show as a whole rather than them as a couple if that makes sense (which is probably why I don't really read/write non-royal AUs).

Gun to my head, all time favourite ship: Christian/Syed from EastEnders.

What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

There are many YR WIPs on my hard drive, but honestly I'm still hoping to finish all of them one day! So I'll say Not Giving In, which I do really want to finish but alas canon kind of killed my love for the characters (especially Jay who plays a big part in the last few chapters), so chances are high I never will. Will be the first and probably only fic I'll ever properly abandon, which I feel gutted about. Blegh.

What are your writing strengths?

Oh god, what a horrible question. 💀 Probably dialogue? Keeping a plot moving along? And people usually seem to like my characterisation, I've had comments in previous fandoms along the lines of 'could be an actual episode of the show' (which I'm taking as a compliment rather than a dig at my unoriginality lol).

What are your writing weaknesses?

Beautiful prose. Metaphor, simile, imagery, description, all of that. None of that's in my wheelhouse at all. If I could get away with writing fics that were 95% dialogue and 5% 'shrugs, nods, stands up, sits down' stage directions I absolutely would.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

Eh, I'm not a big fan. With YR fics, I kind of take the view that if you're writing in English, you're essentially translating the entire fic from Swedish into English anyway - so why leave the odd phrase untranslated? It's distracting more than anything else. But it's not a red line or anything, I don't mind it too much in other people's fics.

First fandom you wrote in?

I won't lie: alas, Harry Potter. See above for my feelings on that now.

Favourite fic you've written?

No false modesty here, it's this one: The Picture Thou Hast Made. I wish I'd given it a better title lol as it might have got more attention, but super proud of this fic, probably my best ever attempt at balancing humour, fluff and angst. (Cough, it's an AU that's probably still enjoyable without any canon knowledge, just saying.)

Mind you, one of the YR WIPs currently lurking in my hard drive might just push it into second place... 👀

31. What was the most difficult fic for you to write (but in the end you made it)?

I'm still writing it! It's the damn Top Gun: Maverick spy AU! But if we're talking about one that's actually finished, I'd say it was against the grain of dystopic claims for the same reasons that the spy AU is killing me now. I used to never post WIPs for this very reason - sometimes it flows and then other times you know exactly what you want to do but you just don't feel like writing it for whatever reason or you've outlined it to death and decided BUT WHAT IF I DON'T DO ANY OF THAT? There's a certain freedom if it only exists between you and a word document because you could let it languish for the rest of time without anyone else knowing (hello, so many Ready or Not fics), but if part of it is out there, you feel compelled to finish it, which is both a blessing and a curse.

I also found it difficult to write mirror my malady, a Sicario fic I wrote ages ago, because it was hard to get Kate's voice right (but weirdly, not as hard to get Matt's?) and there was the added pressure of it being for Yuletide so I didn't want it to suck.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

The ones I've written for the most are Our Flag Means Death, Warhammer 40K (mostly the Ciaphas Cain series, my favourite boy), Snowpiercer (the TV show), and Sharpe! But there are quite a few more I've written at least a one-shot for - I get inspired by a lot of different things, and I also love exchanges like Yuletide!

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

Almost always! I really appreciate nice comments so I make sure at least say thanks :)

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

The first one that came to mind was one of my Sherlock Holmes fics, Some things you do just to see how bad they make you feel, which deals with Holmes's depression and drug use negatively affecting his relationship with Watson. It's a really sad one that I didn't come back to add a happier sequel to until a year later!

But I've written some pretty angsty Our Flag Means Death ones too, particularly I hope it stays dark forever, I hope the worst isn't over and It isn't that much fun, staring down a loaded gun

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I think a lot of my fics are pretty happy! If I'm not writing something fucked-up and sad I'm usually writing a happy couple having good sex and a generally nice time. But if I had to try to pick one, maybe my little trilogy What makes Ed happy?, which gets a sweet Ed/Stede reunion at the end

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I've fortunately avoided that so far! The comments I get are 99% lovely and maybe like 1% something kinda weird that maybe comes across a little bit negative but just makes me shrug my shoulders and say oh well

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Often! If there's any particular kind I gravitate towards it's probably characters slightly awkwardly but excitedly exploring a bit of light BDSM for the first time

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

One of the first fics I posted on Ao3 was a crossover between Death Note and The X-Files called The エクス-Files! (Translator's note: エクス means X) It was a really fun writing experience, and if that idea sounds fun to you at all, you should definitely check it out

But my craziest crossover (and maybe my only other one so far unless I'm forgetting something) is definitely my 2023 Yuletide fic Danger and Dance, in which Remington Steele and Laura Holt investigate a mystery involving DJ Crazy Times of "Planet of the Bass"!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of, is that a thing people do?

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I don't think so but I'd be honoured if someone did!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I have not yet co-written anything that's published anywhere, but a good friend and I once put quite a bit of effort into a story taking place in the universe of The Dark Crystal like a decade ago - now I want to dig that up again and see if it was any good, I remember we had fun with it!

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

Ciaphas Cain/Amberley Vail! The Ciaphas Cain books and Warhammer 40K in general were what really got me into writing fic regularly and participating in fandom more. Part of what made the ship so initially appealing to me, beyond just how much I like the characters, was that they're 100% canon but their relationship isn't the focus of the canon - you just get little hints and references to the fact that they're definitely fucking offscreen while the main thing going on is fighting aliens and shit. So it provides a great opportunity to speculate about what goes on when they're alone together and you don't see it, and how it might tie into their character development and the events of the canon storylines.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I mostly write a lot of shorter fic, so I don't really have any longer WIPs that gradually fizzled out the way I know some other writers struggle with. That being said, I do have plenty of sparse drafts that I started writing or outlining a little bit of and then never sat down and finished because I got distracted by some other idea. One that comes to mind was a Warhammer 40K fic that would have involved Cain and Yarrick meeting and getting involved in a Wild-West-style saloon shootout in space - fun idea but it never really went anywhere

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm pretty good at character voices, especially when I write fic for books I love and I can imitate the style of the narration

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I don't think my description is as good as my dialogue. A lot of my writing experience before I got into fic was in theatre and video games, two mediums where you're much less likely to have a narrator, so I don't have as much practice at it. I find it difficult sometimes to really get across the image in my head in a way that makes sense and flows naturally. But I do think I'm getting better at it all the time!

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I've never really done that beyond the occasional word here and there! If I was going to, I'd want it to be a language I can actually speak, and/or have a friend who speaks it look over it. Maybe one day I'll get to use my French skills in a fic but it hasn't happened yet!

19. First fandom you wrote for?

In the sense of actually deciding "I am going to write fanfic and put it on the internet for other fans," it was the Pathologic games! But in a more general sense, I've been making up stories about my favourite characters since I was a little kid. A while back my mom found something I wrote in high school based on Lord of the Flies that was really cute

20. Favorite fic you've written?

My proudest accomplishment is my OFMD wrestling AU, Tonight on Ring of Revenge!

i wrote this fic for the kate daniels series last year for yuletide. i kept it within canon parameters and therefore there was no way for this pairings ending to be anything but angsty. to this day my fic is the only one in that pairing tag.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

either is forever enough (mentioned above) or put a hold on my heart (e, tgm, rooster x phoenix, currently sitting at about 31k) which i haven't finished posting yet, but like i did finish writing it and let me tell you that ending is some of the sappiest shit i've ever written

8. Do you get hate on fics?

i have. both times i deleted the comment with the intention of moving on, the second time the commenter didn't let me do that so i responded with a rocky horror gif

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

i didn't used to but boy howdy those scenes sure do seem to be finding their way into my fics. i have a wip in the works that opens practically right out the gate with two explicit scenes. it took me a bit to get back into m/f smut after writing so much m/m for buddie. (i haven't posted any f/f but i have written it for an original work)

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

yep! only one and it was a cross between the old guard and leverage and it was such a fun time actually

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

if so i don't know about it

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

nope

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

nothing beyond bouncing ideas back and forth with others

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

oh god. i have like. the ones that scratch an itch in my brain and ones that i love writing for. i got new ones this year (icemav and rooster x phoenix) i love writing buck x eddie and i have had a lot of fun writing book of nile.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

i have a couple of ideas that i started and then kind of moved on from those fandoms (i had a couple of hp wips that i was excited about but will now never finish) but really a lot of what i have sitting in my docs that are unfinished are things i would like to come back to someday

16. What are your writing strengths?

dialogue, probably. and humor

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

i've had to spend so much time developing my imagery skills, and describing action. explicit scenes are such a challenge for me, from vocabulary to action. but as i work on them more i find myself developing those. but all of that are still very much weak points for me

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

i won't really do it unless it's just a few words. i did it in a book of nile fic a while back, but i kept it to a few french phrases that i could translate in text.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

the first fandom i ever posted fic for was the librarians. i actually wrote some doctor x rose stuff that never went beyond the privacy of my own docs.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

i'll do three that i'm really proud of (and a bonus one that i can't name because it hasn't been revealed yet) put a hold on my heart (i just am so fond of it and all the little details that i came up with for the story some of which will be expanded on in other fics) words i've never said (it was fun to write a mistaken identity christmas fic for buddie and i really do like how it came out) let's get lost (and let the good times roll) which i wrote as a companion to lover be good to me (mentioned above) and i just really liked getting to explore and expound on another facet of that story and i really liked the character dynamics i created

FRSC nabs nearly 5000 traffic offenders in FCT 

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) took strict action against traffic violations in Abuja, apprehending nearly 5,000 individuals for breaking traffic rules and regulations.

The revelation came from the Sector Commander, Muta’a Chorrie, during an interview on Tuesday. Chorrie confirmed that a total of 4,907 individuals were caught for committing 6,339 traffic offenses as part of the “Operation Zero Tolerance” initiative in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

I wrote the prompts below with canon as expected baseline but anything not in the DNWs is fine as far as AUs go.

Food history. Monster-fancying. Space. Multiverse stuff. Fics that make me feel soft and gooey inside. Fics that have a pointy darkness that I can enjoy when I'm in the mood for that. Crack taken seriously or not at all seriously are both good. I like a good academia AU but I know people who are in RL academia so I tend to notice if something is jarringly wrong. I'm garbage for royalty AUs. Love triangles are broke, polyamory is bespoke. Bring on the queerplatonic throuples or polycules or what-have-you. I like any fic that goes into the details of how something works or general obscure info, "How It's Made" style. Pittsburgh stuff. People wearing long coats or soft sweaters or kilts. Being stuck in an elevator.

NSFW is fine and a G rating is also fine. Aside from DNWs, I'll try to read most things once. Likes I haven't mentioned: hand kink, forearms, praise kink when the person giving the praise enjoys it at least as much as the person being praised.

Things that tend to knock me out of a sex scene: partners calling eachother "alpha" and "omega" instead of their names, someone saying "it's like you were made for me." Especially if the person having that said to them is being penetrated. (I like omegaverse, btw. Including non-trad. Especially non-trad if I'm being honest.)

Crack crossovers are my jam so if you need a character from a canon you like to fill a role go ahead (preferably not in an isekai or portal fantasy kind of way, unless that kind of crackiness or AU is the point). (If you decide to use SPN characters for this, no Sam, Dean, John, or Jack, please.) The appearance of canon characters who aren't specifically mentioned is fine unless they are listed as prompt-specific DNWs.

Exceptions to DNWs may apply if something is explicitly part of the prompt or canon. For example: The Changeover has rape in the background, which is referred to in the prompt. Ethan of Athos has past incest of some form in canon with Ethan/Janos and it might make sense to refer to it. One of the characters I listed in my Swordspoint prompt canonically has a history of being sexually abused as a child.
