the ppl saying veilguard doesn't deserve a bafta nomination for best narrative game... it's a complex story with a compelling cast of characters and a cohesive theme of the power of enduring hope in the face of adversity. the game came out like four months ago and already there are thousands of fics about it, relatively minor characters have huge fan communities. it's a story that has inspired huge swaths of people to take up art and hobbies again after years of hiatus. it's worthy of the nomination regardless of whether or not rook says 'ok' a lot or whatever it is that you're mad about

Reasoning with Age

Dream and Nightmare hadn't paid too close attention to the passage of time until Classic and Neil came along, and when asked, they could only say that they were there before the village itself. Which didn't tell Classic anything about their age, as the village had been established only a few years before Classic met them.

Classic tried to watch how they acted, trying to see if he could spot any of the typical behavior common among those in stripes. There were times Classic felt sure of their age, and others when they acted wiser than Gerson on his best days.

"How do you define age?" Nightmare asked.

"... how old you are?" Classic asked, suddenly doubting himself.

"Yes, but how do you define 'you'?" Nightmare insisted, sighing.

Classic stared, struggling to understand how existentialism could help here. "uh, i'm not sure how to answer that. your- body, i guess?"

"So you are asking when our bodies were created?"

"... yes?"

"Then we are children," Nightmare said definitively, turning back to his book.

"hold on," Classic stammered. "what other way would you define how old you are?"

"You rememeber how Dream and I are spirits, yes? By our coming into existence, we carry a collective experience from our mother. It is how we are able to know about things we have yet to see."

That... made sense. Still confusing, though.

"by that definition, then, how old would you say you are?"

"I would be unable to put an exact number to it."

Classic sat back, thinking it over. Since Classic had met them, years had passed in their world, but the twins remained oddly stagnant. Their personalities lacked the growth most monsters in stripes would experience, yet the two seemed to still be learning how to interact appropriately with others.

Ive had Medic Marshall in my brain sm lately. Think about it.. The most clumsy pup - aka the one most likely to get hurt and accidentally cause physical injuries to others - is the _medic_ . On an emergency/rescue team nonetheless!! The jobs gotta be never ending realistically speaking..... I imagine his frequent bumping into things, stepping on sharp objects and falling on his knees and paws repeatedly is what first taught him basic first aid. Just watching Ryder (or other medical personnel(?)) attend to his minor rashes, cuts, n bruises got him at par with standard procedure - and eventually his interest and knowledge was far built enough to really train up for the role. On an angstier note I bet he felt like he would 'finally be of more use' - i imagine Marshalls fairly insecure about how easy he ends up hurting his close ones with his clutz curse and learning how to atleast take care of the aftermath would make him feel more competent.... even if he does cause an injury - he will do everything he can to take care of them and ensure that they recover just fine.. He'd be so soft hearted, he's really trying his best out here... He cant undo or control his clumsiness but he _can_ do his best to clean up his messes, yeah? Nobody is un-cared for under Marshalls watch... 🥺💕

love and light to everyone but if i see one more post that’s like “the point of asoiaf is that feudalism is BAD” i’m going to rip out my hair and start eating dirt and worms. like yes, it is bad. yes, monarchies are bad. yes so true it’s annoying when people ignore all of that and focus on who they think deserves the throne more. but that’s not the point—that is the premise? it’s the beginning of the exploration and deconstruction. functionally this system is rigid (specifically in terms of gender and class) and horrifically violent: so what it’s really like to live in it? to try to be a hero, a knight, to be a lady in a world where your body belongs to your family, your lord, your order? is it possible to be a good person in a hierarchal world like this, with such vast power imbalances woven throughout it and every relationship and interaction that you have informed by that? how do you navigate that imbalance in order to have meaningful relationships—can you every truly do it? and who decides what is good? how do you know if it’s truly right or it just felt right because it’s what you wanted to do? what about the people who have no name, no family, no order: what happens to them? don’t they matter? what if in a lifetime of looking the other way or actively causing others harm, you do a few things—maybe one thing—that’s objectively good: does it mean anything? does it matter, even if no one ever knows? what if the best thing you ever did broke every vow you made, every law that governs your society? how do you live with that dissonance?

what’s it like to be a ruler, to be a king or queen—is it possible to be a good one in such an unequal system? to wield power justly? who decides what is just? who decides who should rule? at which point does the amount of power someone can have cross the line into too much? is it when you stop trying to figure out how to use it correctly and worry only about how to keep it? if holding onto it costs you everything, your family and all your relationships, is it still worth it? what if having that much power available is necessary to the survival of your people, maybe even your world, but when it’s misused the carnage left behind is beyond articulation—is it still worth it? are the lives it saves worth the lives it took? how do you measure that? who carries the weight of that choice and how? how do you live with it? how do you go on living in a world that can be harsh and cruel and unfair, a world where your good intentions and your personhood seem to matter very little in the face of someone else’s greed or when compared to the yoke of your duty? and the questions never stop and the answers when and if they come are rarely easy, but the point is that you keep asking and keep trying because that’s what it means to be alive lol

I so desperately need to see more folks write abt the inherent dynamic of how Cygate is like. a very much mutual, back-and-forth protective relationship. They protect /eachother/ and I think that thats such an important part of it all. Tailgate gets dumbed down a lot but he’s soooo far from stupid or plainly naive, his naivety comes from his optimistic attitude and lack of experience with more extreme situations. But he’s so fucking smart, and hes a stubborn lil’ shit, and he’s gathered every bit of how Cyclonus works and keeps it all in mind for whenever something happens and the guy /needs/ someone who /gets/ him to step in.

The “See, that wasn’t so difficult.” line speaks soooo many words. He’s so fucking patient man, if there’s one thing he has oodles of experience with it’s the passage of time having to be spent for a Good Outcome. That’s sorta what the whole arc of that development was about, showing what /he/ is willing to do. They are equal in what they give and take. They’re anchors for eachother and I NEED more of that it’s like my favorite thing to see in art and writing of them. They’re going to make me so ill i genuinely teared up writing this wtf

one underrated thing i love about tot is how nobody is american. thank god. like, duh, because it's a chinese game and all the characters have varying amounts of inherent chinese elements in their stories (with marius being the Most irrevocably chinese of them all) (sidenote: very funny how obviously chinese marius and his family is, but their eng surname is fuckin VON HAGEN KSBFJ) and they live in a fictional country also. but like idk it's just such a breath of fresh air to me, who used to be in primarily western fandoms. i hated researching about american places and american high schools. i hated having to learn things about new jersey or seattle. thankfully i dont have to do any of that ridiculousness anymore for tot. theyre not american, im safe....im finally safe......
