“You need a break.”
The Captain of the Guard turned their head to scan the side-entrance as a ploy to hide their smile. This was not the first time he suggested a break, nor would it be the last.
“If you’ll remember, it was you who assigned me to this post, Your Lordship.” They risked a glance over their shoulder. The Gerudo King held his cheek in his palm, elbow propped against the arm of his throne. A grin stretched across his face. It was so rare for him to display his emotions so openly when at work; they were almost transfixed by the sight. “It is my duty to protect you at all hours of the day, from anyone who should dare to threaten His Majesty.”
A deep chuckle rumbled low in his chest. “The Kingdom went to sleep hours ago.”
“Nighttime is the perfect cover for an assassination.”
“We are surrounded by layers of protection,” he countered, teasing. “A slew of warriors between us and the front gate, all prepared to deal with intruders. If anything did happen, they would raise an alarm.”
“Your Highness has not retired for the night.” They faced forward once more. Their ornate, golden spear glinted in the moonlight pouring through the sandstone windows and open doorways. The only other light came from torches scattered throughout the room, keeping the chill at bay. “I am not permitted to leave my post until my King does so.”
He chuckled, a deep, warm rumble. “And if I choose to remain here all night?”
“Then I shall guard you all night.”
They listened as he stood from the chair, heavy footfalls carrying him closer and jewelry clinking together gently with every motion. His large chest hovered close behind them, radiating heat like the desert sun so close to their skin. His nose pressed lightly against their hair.
“And if I asked you to join me?”
Even after all this time, their heart picked up. They could imagine his smirk as he realized this as well. “If that is what His Majesty wishes.”
He hm’d. Golden eyes watched carefully as he slid a large hand around their waist. As expected of his Captain, they did not flinch away or fall out of formation, even as he brushed against skin left exposed by their armor. Professional to the end of their shift, always. He dropped his head to their shoulder and nuzzled his large nose into their soft neck, pressing against the pulse point just beneath their jaw.
“And if I asked what you wished?” he purred lowly.
They smiled. Finally, their muscles relaxed beneath his touch. It was intoxicating to feel their trust fall implicitly into his hands. They turned around in his arms and carefully undid the elaborate jewelry keeping his hair up.
“I wish to spend the night with my husband.”
Oh, the love in his eyes. His smile rivaled the warmth of the burning sun, and the softness of fine, Gerudo fabrics. For a moment, he rested their foreheads together and lingered, basked in the presence of his beloved. He could not imagine another soul filling the spot reserved in his heart as perfectly as they did, and he did not wish for anyone else to try.
They shared a brief kiss in the moonlight. It was late enough already, there was no point in delaying rest any longer. “As you wish, my love.”

i think the main reason i'm not over-the-top hating on this zelda movie thing is just because. i never expected it to be that great? i mean, even if it was animated in that ghibli style way there's so much fanart of... it might look nice, but would that really make it good?
i feel like no matter what, a zelda movie backed by nintendo will stick to a very safe good vs evil story, with birthright monarchy, vague orientalism and holy maidens. because thats what the games are.
whether animated or live-action, best case scenario, you get a blockbuster with some decent emotional sincerity. totk had moments of that, it was effective at being affective. but as a game, it was still mostly great for its gameplay. aesthetically, the best-case scenario for live action would be something along the lines of lord of the rings or narnia. which, time & budget permitting, we might get.
so yeah. in my eyes, very little is lost. because i'm a story-focused nerd. and story-wise, zelda has never been that exciting. it has a lot of fun lore, it has a lot of potential, but very little story development.

Okay so it's another LU idea and can someone please adopt it so it will leave me alone? Anyone? I have too many projects already. Someone please save me!
Anyway. This is a "Legend is the last one to join the chain" idea. He was practically raised by Fi after he pulled the Master Sword for the first time (was it @bokettochild who came up with that? I know I've read some really good fics with that but I'm not sure I remember by who correctly. Please correct me if I've mixed people up), and it takes place on Lorule's Death Mountain. Link is a regular at the Treacherous Tower, because it's an easy way to earn money and with the Triforce restored the monsters aren't as mindless as before so he actually befriends them (though I hc the monsters in the T-Tower were the least mindless to begin with (at least the ones in the audience, maybe the ones one fights were caught mindless ones), probably around the level of Blind the Ex-Sage the Thief, and that they just became more "stable" and better att communicating when the Triforce was restored). Anyway when the story takes place, Link is actually filling in for the final boss because the Purple Moldorm is sick and their new Union demands sick time or something.
When the chain appears in Lorule it's fairly near the T-Tower and when they ask the Devilish Girl about the Hero and learn he's the final boss, they realize someone will have to get up there and defeat him for his shift to end. She will only let one of them enter, so Sky, Warriors or Wild traverse the Tower with the Master Sword in hand (and I'd pick one of those three because they're aware of Fi's presence. Wild might be post-TotK Wild).
When Sky/Wars/Wild finally makes it to Legend there's some brief chatting, and when they attempt to attack each other they simultaneously get their hands burned and Legend accidentally hisses an undignified "Mom!" at Fi making the other Hero realise this teen was practically raised by a sword (and yes this is the scene that gives me the urge to write this, please save me). It becomes a sword-less battle, because Legend shift won't end if he's not defeated and his (magical?) contract don't permit him to hold back more than making it non-leathal. Tri-Force Heroes might've taken place before ALBW for this fic so Legend actually can use doppels/doppel medallion/etc so there 3v1 for a bit. Surprising move from Sky/Wars/Wild eventually sees Legend defeated and he meets the rest of the chain. He probably offers to guide them to the Castle to talk with Princess Hilda, if it doesn't turn out they've managed to get the information they want from the monsters on the audience while they watched. Maybe the chain are chatting about different friendly/civil monsters they've met during their adventures while descending the mountain. And/or Sky/Wars/Wild asks Legend why he addressed his sword as mom.
And because I am utterly incapable of keeping a story idea short, I was also considering to make it so Link is stuck in Lorule because the bracelet only had enough power left to send one of them home to Hyrule and both Link and Princess Hilda agreed Princess Zelda should be the one to return. Ravio would in that case likewise be stuck in Hyrule because he didn't have enough magic. He had probably managed to sneak into Hyrule's Sacred Realm trying to go home and met Zelda as she came back so he knew Link had won, though he might've left before Zelda made her wish (or even woke up?) and thinks Lorule and Link is gone. Maybe. It has some sweet juicy angst potential to let Ravio think his home and hero are destroyed. But also including this would for sure make it a longer fic...

I gotta say I really wasn't expecting the latest TotK trailer to validate my stance that irregardless of whatever game/reality/reincarnation cycle Link is in, he absolutely does not ever have a driver's license.
No one who passes the permit driver test would even think to attempt half the amount of bullshit this little feral twink of a gremlin has got cooking in his tiny little blond head. What an icon.

k i know i ask this every few months (and then ignore all the responses i get lol) but i'm looking for a new game to try and these are the ones i'm considering, idek if all of them are available on switch but lemme know if you've played any of em and what your experience was!
in general i like a good balance between story and exploration, i usually like complexity as long as it doesn't impede gameplay, a decent combat system, and good graphics (so prob nothing on the older side bc i have trouble getting past the clunkiness)
i love botw and totk, stardew, and subnautica, currently playing potion permit and replaying botw, and for right now i'm looking for something with an open world that actually feels lived in and has depth. the open world isn't a deal-breaker but i need to have some level of freedom to do what i want lol

Listing this just because, Weirdest self-imposed challenge runs I've done for BOTW and TOTK:
1. Main Memories Only (BOTW)
I think this was my first one I ever did; I had the weird niche idea of, do you get the bonus credits scene if you get ONLY the memories in the slate?
This, incidentally, meant that -- after not playing video games for 20 years (eg. N64 era) a Switch was my first ever console I personally owned and BOTW my first game -- I set myself a challenge run in which I had to do the boss gauntlet of BOTW...
...without the Master Sword.
(Incidentally, yes you do get the bonus scene which is really funny bc it definitley implies you freed the DIvine Beasts and I most certainly did NOT.)
[Below: "No Status Effects", "Weaponless", "4 Heart Run"]
2. No Status Effects (BOTW & TOTK)
Status effects here were defined as attack/defence up & weather effects. I also cut out gloom-resistance & sunny foods in TOTK, and banned upgrading the glide set to set-bonus level. Movement effects (which I generally don't use anyways) were fine in TOTK, I don't remember for BOTW. Weapon-and-environment-based weather bonuses were permitted, but the weapon ones only ever give first-level defence.
This was significantly harder in BOTW than in TOTK. In TOTK, Sidon's ability negates entirely the environmental dangers of Death Mountain and Gerudo Desert, with a level-two protection and thirty second duration. The ability to throw items is also helpful: I struggled a lot with trying to drop chu jelly and hit it *before* it turned into a firebomb instead in BOTW.
You also, incidentally, can't use any abilities while actively on fire. This made the drones up Death Mountain in BOTW a serious problem, and I am very glad I had ancient arrows to deal with them because I could NOT magnesis them instead.
In TOTK, the hardest section was the end parts of the Rito quest (level two cold), and cold damage is pretty slow. I don't think I'd bother doing that one again, but I might repeat BOTW for kicks.
3. Weaponless (BOTW & TOTK)
Absolutely the FUCKING best of them all, highly recommend if you really want a challenge. I did NOT do Master Mode in BOTW, because I needed to be able to kill bokoblins and -- guess what you can't get in BOTW if you pick up *no* melee weapons, no bows, and no shields?
That's right. You can't repair the Sheikah Slate. At all. Which means: no camera, no upgrades. It also blocks you from completing the second Kakariko Shrine (you need to finish the great fairy picture quest to start that!) and from getting the snow and sand boots (Bozai doesn't even appear until you get the camera fixed.)
IIRC I could complete 70 shrines or so, and couldn't even pull a few from the ground at all. I also could not complete a single region, because every single one required you to at least have something in your inventory, and I did not do that -- because, if you never picked up a melee weapon, bow, or shield, Link's shirtless model never acquires a baldric which had some... fascinating results LOL.
However, it's been interesting how the game changes between BOTW and TOTK doing the same thing. in BOTW, you have unlimited remote bombs. They're not very strong but they are consistent and endless and fairly safe to use. In TOTK, however, it becomes not just a resource management game but a game of risk and reward. You can't do three of the six dungeons (you need a bow for both Gerudo and Zora quests, and you need to complete all four regions to crack the castle) but you can get Mineru if you permit Zonai device use. (Which I despise using, so that's self-limiting for me.)
The other thing that changes is that the bosses that require serious damage done become a mix of attrition and risk management. If you're willing to acquire the lightning helm and Zant's helmet, you can use sapphires and topaz with impugnity.... but breaking rocks and killing talus are resource intensive tasks in themselves. It took me 15-30 bombs to down a single overworld boss. It took *ten minutes* to kill Marbled Gohma.
And if you use a gemstone and aren't immune, those things take out 20 hearts a pop if you're caught in splash damage.
But I could also complete all but 12 shrines in TOTK without melee weapons, which I think speaks to how broad the problem solving options are. The two games function completely differently because of the different base mechanics, and it was an absolute delight.
4. Four-Heart Run, no Fairies, no Armour Upgrades (BOTW & TOTK [just started])
This was not done as a speedrun, this was a Master Mode, I'm bored let's see how long before I get tired of dying. (I did not.) This is likely to be how tears goes too, although I can be iffy about holding onto fairies or not LOL. I usualy am not very strict, but I enjoy the challenge.
IIRC I left off the BOTW run at being unable to beat Maz Koshia (I'd finidhed everything else, including Calamity Ganon.) I imagine TOTK will be similar, once I decide how to handle the Master Sword and/or Mineru question. I only just finished weaponless, so here's to hoping!

just a general question about your headcanon's on the ship. Do you think that maybe, in another life or universe Ganondorf and Rauru could love each other? Like maybe the goddesses don't want them together because they would be too powerful. ☕ I'm really looking forward to read your new fic. You're really talented!
That’s a really interesting question! I’m going to have a hard time answering it because once I’ve got one set of headcanons set up, I have a really hard time looking at alternatives to it because I’ve spent so much time getting all the pieces to fit together (this is why I read very little fic that’s not my own), but let’s give it a try
I think, first of all, that Ganondorf would have to be allowed to be a person in a way that TOTK, frustratingly, avoids. There’s a universe out there somewhere, I want to believe, where Ganondorf and Rauru bond over the solitude inherent in their positions: Ganondorf’s lone male of his culture to Rauru’s one of the last few members of his species. But to get to that, you need a Ganondorf willing to identify and feel his own loneliness, which I don’t think the guy we have in canon is inclined towards.
I wonder if this also requires Rauru to have allied himself not with the Hylians but with the Gerudo. That would be an interesting choice—in canon, allying with the Hylians makes sense because of their shared reverence for Hylia (seen in the existence of our familiar goddess statue not only in the GSI Temple of Time but also on Dragonhead Island). The Gerudo, for contrast, revere the Seven(-to-Eight) Heroines, to the near exclusion of goddess worship at all; in Creating a Champion, it notes that Gerudo Town’s goddess statue is out of the way and nearly forgotten for this reason. So a Zonai is going to be received differently among the Gerudo than they are among the other people of the land.
Rauru is a curious guy, though! Maybe it could happen like this: intrigued most of all by the people with whom the Zonai have historically had little in common—I have additional things to say about that but let’s wait until I have things finalized in my fic before I get into it—he made his descent to the land in the desert rather than in Hylian territory. Of course he was not permitted into town, but what if the Gerudo allowed him to stay in one of their other settlements? Let’s say the Northern Temple (what are now the Northern Ruins) just ’cause. But the prince of the Gerudo—who knows his place in his society, theoretically—by definition, by the uniqueness of his birth he can have only one place in his society—is equally intrigued by this foreign voe. Could he be the first other voe Ganondorf has met? Wait, was he actually, I should keep that in mind for my fic too They get to talking, they grow to know each other on an honest level. I think they could grow to love each other in a story like this. I do think the sex is a little less flavorful in this case tho so what good does it do me? Well, anyway.
And what then? If we trust the Sage of Lightning’s perspective—and we might as well, lacking any other insight on Ganondorf prior to the Gerudo Assault cutscene—it was not until after Ganondorf became chief that his hunger for power really began to develop. So what do we believe caused this? Is this just an inherent flaw in his personality? The curse of Demise rearing its head inevitably? (I should disclaim that I’ve never finished Skyward Sword and am only trying to use these words the way I’ve seen others use them.) In that case, both options—Rauru reviling his lover’s thirst for power and betraying him, or Rauru and the power of the Zonai turned in service to Gerudo conquest—are fascinating.
But if we are looking at Ganondorf as a person who gets to make person choices, then when he ascends to his position as Chief of the Gerudo and there is no neighboring nation consolidating an unearned power over the rest of the continent, what then? Might he be less driven towards conquest?

heyyyy your Zelda au/story thing sounds cool you got any interesting facts
okay SO not sure of any interesting facts so I’m just gonna dump all of the information & stuff that I have written/planned out so be warned of the LONG text under the cut
I’ve dubbed this story The Legend of Zelda: The Daughter of Evil but there’s a chance this may change so be warned
So prettty much Zelda’s mom Sonia (I named her Sonia as a reference to totk) is a sheikah who falls in love with Ganondorf. Over time, however, Sonia starts to get scared by Ganon so after Zelda is born, she flees Gerudo Town and goes back to Hyrule. There, she hides the fact that she’s a sheikah in hopes that Ganon won’t be able to find her or Zelda. Sonia asks Impa for help with everything. Impa helps Sonia and teaches Zelda the ways of the sheikah. Eventually (when Zelda is like 2) Sonia falls in love with king Rhoam (she’s a bad bitch who pulled not one but two kings lol). Sonia, Impa, and Zelda move into the castle. Impa continues to train Zelda & no except Sonia knows of this. Eventually, Sonia dies when Zelda is 11 (sad)
Link lives in a little farm on the outskirts of Castle Town. His dad is a florist and his mom is a knight in the royal guard.
Every three months, a ceremony is held where everyone in the kingdom aged 14 or older must go to the temple of time to try and pull out the master sword.  Years ago, a seer prophesized that the holder of the triforce of power would attack hyrule andbring evil. Only the holder of the triforce of wisdom who had special sealing, light powers alongside the holder of the triforce of courage who carries the master sword can banish this evil.  The master sword was found in the temple of time in the lost woods. The king placed guards on the temple to protect it from evil.  Ceremony is held to find the one who holds the triforce of courage and protect & train them to defeat whoever holds the triforce of power.  Only those there to try to pull out the sword & the royal family are permitted in the sanctum with the sword.  Link pulls the Master Sword out on his 14 birthday on accident.  Monsters show up so without thinking he grabs the sword to defend everyone else at the ceremony.  Ends up being taken to the castle to begin training & to be protected.  Zelda and link become quick friends.  Zelda does not yet know she holds the triforce of wisdom.  They spend some time together goofing around the castle.  After being bored of being trapped in the castle for so long, Link and Zelda sneak out to go explore outside of the castle.  They get attacked by monsters not too far from the castle.  Link tries to protect them with teh Master Sword, but he’s not well trained with it yet (it takes a lot of energy, more than a normal sword).  As he is about to be struck down, Zelda jumps in to save him and unlocks her power from the triforce (think how botw zelda unlocked her powers when saving link from the guardian).  Impa (who was following them) sees this and tells the king.  The King is upset at them sneaking out, but happy that they found the holder of the triforce of wisdom (especially since it’s his kid, lol).  King Rhoam holds a ball to celebrate the finding of Link and Zelda holding pieces of the triforce (and to send a message to any enemies that they are protected by the king of hyrule himself).  Ganondorf sees this and sends monsters and a phantom ganon to attack the ball and kidnap Link & Zelda) .  King Rhoam is killed.  Link & Zelda manage to avoid getting caught or killed but they do get separated.
After the ball, Link wakes up in the temple of time where he first pulled the master sword out. He heads further into the temple and meets the great deku tree. He speaks to the great deku tree and meets Navi as well.
I haven’t figured out what happens after this yet but I do know that I want an evil/puppet Zelda fight before the final fight against Ganondorf like the possessed Zelda in twilight Princess or spirit tracks
sldeowhdgejdbenfidjd anyways sorry this is long and messy and filled with spelling errors but I hope you like hearing about my little story!!!
if you have any questions about anything feel free to ask me!! I know this prolly wasn’t the clearest answer

In the AU that lives in my brain (and fanfics) the Hero of Twilight isn’t permitted to fight as a Hylian in the Hero of the Wild’s era, only as a wolf—at least during BOTW. Though he does travel as a Hylian sometimes and interact with Wild, but he says his name is Rusl to not reveal his true identity.
As a result of being unable to fight, “Rusl” has a reputation of running from monsters. Kinda strange how a wolf tends to show up and attack them after he leaves…
After the events of TOTK the Light Spirits (who sent him to this era in the first place) allow him to return to Wild’s era again, but this time decide that he can fight in either form… which means that “Rusl’s” cowardly reputation from years before during BOTW kinda gets destroyed.

actually! i dont know how relevant ganon is to gboh (especially because i think this is a bit of a link corruption arc), however. hows he doing. is he still under the castle like in totk, is he just some shadow pig guy with no human form, does it tie into alttp/the downfall timeline in anyway, and i would ask how/if zelda is freed and how everything goes down however thats almost certainly spoilers so. you dont have to answer that snorts. also does he have motives. ganon juice…. i am just a poor victorian child.,.,…….
god you opened a whole can of worms that i'm still honestly trying to think through. you're gonna have to pardon me for stream of consciousness rambling again I really really do not know where I will go with this. talking about it helps me sort out what I want to do though! its just. a lot.
let me start with what I do know is definitely going to happen. zelda getting free and the battle that happens is pretty similar to the canon calamity ganon fight (there isnt a dark beast ganon fight because I do not want to write that); it's only after that when things start getting messy. cracks start appearing everywhere leading down to somewhere deep in the earth, the castle and parts of castle town partially sink into one-- it's still mostly intact, but highly unstable. monsters start behaving really weirdly.
I do really want to have ganon as more than a force of nature, but I'm not sure if the story would really permit that. on one hand, I feel like it would really bolster the themes of gboh to have a proper ganondorf appearance! on the other hand, I really would have to dedicate a lot of time to his character that I'm not sure I have, and I would have to really dig into how much of the calamity was something he was consciously doing and why. I think it would be fun to portray him as someone whose resentment and hubris took over, and attempts to bring people under his sway that cause destruction. picture him if you will asking the divine beasts about going apeshit.
oh wait i got an idea ooopps. I would love to tie it into stuff like oot but I'm just not sure How i'd do that. so ideally i'd be using a very heavily modified version of totk ganondorf bc I think he deserves better + im very very averse to making another "oc that fills the role of ganondorf" as I already have too many (two) and im still struggling with the implications of one. so it would probably be better to include him with his very few personality traits and history then just heavily redesign him and change his history significantly
