What do I miss? Why are they saying that Clarice Starling is a r*cist and a transph*bic that's not in the canon that I remember.

The racist comments always come from the beginning of the Hannibal novel and her dealing with the shooting of Drumgo. Basically because they think she’s a basic white woman who shot and killed a black woman. Ignoring the fact that this person, regardless of race, was shooting at her. Mapp, makes a good point later on because Clarice wants to know how Mapp, her best friend an African American woman, feels about her killing another African American woman. Mapp basically says, she shot first and I’d rather you be alive but I’d also want you to start questioning why you keep putting yourself into these situations.

IDK about the transphobic but I know there are some things that there as some thoughts that can be seen as homophobic towards Margot. When Clarice sees how buff Margot is Clarice thinks she’s really masculine looking and has passing thought about how she must take steroids and wonders if she has to tape her clitoris down. It’s really like “Yes, Clarice you are still the prettiest girl in the room.”  I personally laughed when I read the whole does she tape her clit down thing.

I however like these thoughts because they show just how human Clarice is. Despite working for what is just, Clarice is very arrogant and judgemental. The other thing “woke tumblr” forgets is these novels were written 20-30 years ago. In Hannibal where these events I discussed take place, it was published in 1999 and takes place in 1996-98ish. Views on homosexuality and transgrender were  quite different. Clarice as a character here was a 32 year old white woman; these weren’t the issues CIS white women were allying themselves by the droves with then. For some context 1997 was the year Ellen came out and got so much backlash her show was cancelled.

I personally don’t think Clarice is an intentionally racist or homophobic character and people are taking these things way out of context. She’s a very real and human character and her journey is the struggle of women (albeit white women) against a very rigid old boys club. Her’s is a story of class struggle: she is poor white trash, who works hard and believes hard work and doing the right thing will get you far in life only to learn it doesn’t. Her’s is a story of a woman so beaten down by a system that is designed to work against her but yet she still prevails. And if you cannot find inspiration in that and cannot get past two vague passages and remember them in context, you are not worthy of her.

And most of the time the people who are saying these things about Clarice are the same people praising Fuller for his having so many female characters even though IDK he Fridged so many of them; some of them multiple times. I’m looking at poor Abigail. I once wrote a whole think piece on how many times Abigail was “killed” for male angst.

You are NOT transgrender if you dont have 1. GENDER dysphoria 2. BODY dysphoria.
