Coal sector's green initiatives expand India's land cover
Tumblr media
In the fiscal year 2023-24, the Coal Ministry's unwavering commitment to environmental preservation reached new heights as over 51 lakh saplings were planted, effectively bringing more than 2734 hectares of land under a lush green canopy. This achievement surpassed the initial target of 2400 hectares. Additionally, 372 hectares have been rejuvenated with grass cover, stabilising soil, enhancing moisture retention, and preventing erosion on restored land. During the preceding fiscal year 2022-23, coal and lignite Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) under the Ministry of Coal planted around 50 lakh saplings, covering 2370 hectares of land. Over the past five years, coal and lignite PSUs have significantly expanded India's green cover by planting over 233 lakh saplings, reclaiming and greening 10,894 hectares of land. This remarkable endeavour, under the vigilant guidance and supervision of the Coal Ministry, has been realised through annual large-scale plantation initiatives across various areas, including avenue plantations, overburden dumps, residential colonies, riverbanks, and roadsides. Innovative techniques such as miyawaki plantation, seed ball plantation, grassland development, and drone technology for planting in challenging terrains have been embraced. India's coal sector has emerged as a key contributor to the nation's environmental sustainability goals and ecological conservation. Focused on improving the ecological balance and restoring mined-out areas, coal and lignite PSUs have played a pivotal role in augmenting the nation's forest and tree cover. These initiatives align not only with the National Mission for a Green India (GIM), a critical component of the National Action Plan on Climate Change, but also contribute to India's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) commitment to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through increased forest and tree cover by 2030. In addition to afforestation efforts, the coal sector actively promotes the development of eco-parks and mine tourism sites. Fifteen eco-parks and mine tourism sites have been successfully established, with seven integrated into the local tourism circuit. Looking ahead, these PSUs have ambitious plans to create 19 new eco-parks and tourism sites in coal mining areas, fostering sustainable tourism and environmental conservation. The estimated investment for these initiatives is a substantial ₹128 crore. These eco-parks, featuring tree plantations and grasslands, serve as essential components of green landscapes and function as carbon sinks. These accomplishments underscore the dedication and relentless efforts of coal and lignite PSUs in contributing to India's environmental sustainability goals. Read the full article

Scary story for Halloween: early one morning my dad went hunting. He left before dawn because he wanted to be situated in the deer stand before the sun came up. Our family hunted on a little plot of land that belonged to a friend, a 10-minute ride away from our house on the 4 wheeler. He parked the 4 wheeler just inside the gate, and began the long walk to the stand.
As he walked in the dark, he passed under thick treecover and no longer had the moonlight to see by. He turned on his flashlight and saw eyes reflecting back at him from the brush a few feet ahead. Thinking it was a bedded-down deer, he quickly turned the flashlight off.
The eyes stayed lit.
He said the hair on the back of his neck stood up, because this was impossible, and his brain kind of went blank and he yelled "who's there?!" thinking subconsciously that someone was playing a prank on him.
The eyes stared for a moment, rotating as if the thing was cocking it's head back and forth, blinked, and went out.
My dad hi-tailed it to the stand, no longer caring about being quiet. He waited for the sun to come up before leaving. He didn't stay to hunt. He didn't want to be out there anymore.
He did investigate that patch of brush on his way back. He said it looked like something big had been bedded down there.
no that's literally so scary what the fuck

Birds, Watching
Tumblr media
last-second @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt.
(Did a throwaway quip from Penn about 'little bird' sources need to turn into anything? Maybe it didn't, but oh well, it has.)
Sparrows made for terrible sentries. They spent more time squabbling with each other than they did keeping an eye on their surroundings.
Alas, sparrows were what he had to work with, since the crows had turned traitor for nothing more than the promise of food. While they still made more than enough noise to raise an alarm, befriending the target was the last thing he'd wanted them to do. (He'd parted ways with that particular flock after winter struck particularly harshly, frozen ground driving them in search of milder climes. But he stayed. He didn't have anywhere better to go.)
He'd tried others after that, but hawks were too solitary to tolerate his presence. Herons were standoffish and, frankly, rude. Doves, on the other hand, were a lot more sweet-natured -- and helplessly naive. They made for good company if he overlooked their simple natures, but half the time, they didn't even notice the Hylian climbing the cliffside. Revali usually had to scare them off before making his own hasty retreat.
It had been years. Why was that guy still trying to come after him?
The sparrows continued to bicker. The latest pointless turf war over a prime section of shrubbery—what did it matter if someone stood on the branch you'd claimed as your own? did that really warrant several minutes of shouting about it—came to an abrupt stop. One began to pipe a danger call.
Revali came alert at once, scanning the path for whatever the birds had seen as they rose in a fidgeting cloud and scattered into the trees. A threat to sparrows wasn't necessarily a threat to himself, but... Though he scanned every shape and shifting shadow that crept in the undergrowth, there didn't look to have been anything to spark such alarm.
Perhaps he should have looked up. The Hylian crashed through the treecover on a contraption of cloth and wood. Revali scarcely had time to understand what his eyes were seeing before the collision. They went over in a tangle of limbs and feathers. He yelped and kicked and struggled, but the element of surprise gave the Hylian an undue advantage.
"Caught you."
"Get off me—"
"Come home."
This again. Revali didn't have a home. Revali didn't even have a flock. He stopped struggling, and the Hylian let him up. He retreated to the other side of the glade, letting Revali scrape together the shatters of his dignity.
"...Come home, Revali."
That snagged on something he didn't care to think about. What was there to go back to? An empty shelf of rock on the cliffside which hasn't seen an inhabitant in years. At least here he had company, even if the sparrows were vapid and annoying.
"How long are you planning to keep this up?"
"Until you're ready."
At least he didn't say 'remember' like last time.
"And then what?" Revali was tired of this. He was tired of being hounded to remember something that would never come back.
"Home can be people, too."
Link would probably be better at keeping watch than sparrows were, he thought. That, and that alone, led him to say, "...Only if you can keep up."
The Hylian—Link—smiled lopsidedly, as if taking Revali's words to heart. How foolish of him. Revali smirked, grabbed his meagre possessions, and—
The ground shrank away beneath him, and Link shrank with it to a pinprick. Something of the sight tugged on familiarity. For the first time in years, he laughed.
If Link caught up again, then this time he would. ...If not, he could always try to find another flock.
Maybe starlings, this time.

I agree--this is always going to be a pretty nuanced discussion. The important thing is to look at the types of habitats found in your area. Even if you don't know what the location you're trying to replant looked like 200-400 years ago, you can at least figure out whether a tree is an appropriate thing to plant or not.
For example, here in the PNW west of the Cascades, most people's idea of "nature" is a mixed conifer forest. Which is not a bad thing, given that we have plenty of them, especially in the Cascades and Coast Range, and scattered throughout the lower elevations as well. But--both the mountains and the lowlands have historically had localized grasslands and wetlands. While some grasslands may be dotted with Oregon white oaks, and the wetlands often have red alders soaking their roots in the mud, they don't generally have as heavy treecover as a proper forest.
Moreover, many of the people in the U.S. saying "We need to plant more trees!" are in the wooded areas east of the Great Plains. It makes sense to plant trees in a lot of places there because forests are common (though not ubiquitous). However, did you know the American Arbor Day started in Nebraska City, Nebraska? That's in the middle of what was once tallgrass prairie, where oak stands were primarily found in bottomlands, surrounded by endless acres of grassland. Settlers in the Midwest prairies mainly planted non-native trees as windbreaks--the region is full of Siberian elm, for example, because it grows quickly.
I've written about afforestation before, and it always bears mentioning again. Yes, trees are lovely and ecologically important--but not everything needs to be a forest. If you live somewhere that was historically grassland or desert, where trees may be few to nonexistent, you don't want to plant a forest of trees, even if they're native to the region. Instead, look at what the keystone plant species of the area are, which ones may be scarcer than they used to be and could use a population boost, and which ones do well with being planted as opposed to only popping up of their own volition. (Most states have Native Plant Societies you can ask for advice.)
A caveat to this study: the researchers were primarily looking at insect pollinator biodiversity. Planting a few native wildflowers in your garden will not suddenly cause unusual megafauna from the surrounding hinterlands to crowd onto your porch.
That being said, this study backs up Douglas Tallamy's optimistic vision of Homegrown National Park, which calls for people in communities of all sizes to dedicate some of their yard (or porch or balcony) to native plants. This creates a patchwork of microhabitats that can support more mobile insect life and other small beings, which is particularly crucial in areas where habitat fragmentation is severe. This patchwork can create migration corridors, at least for smaller, very mobile species, between larger areas of habitat that were previously cut off from each other.
It may not seem like much to have a few pots of native flowers on your tiny little balcony compared to someone who can rewild acres of land, but it makes more of a difference than you may realize. You may just be creating a place where a pollinating insect flying by can get some nectar, or lay her eggs. Moreover, by planting native species you're showing your neighbors these plants can be just as beautiful as non-native ornamentals, and they may follow suit.
In a time when habitat loss is the single biggest cause of species endangerment and extinction, every bit of native habitat restored makes a difference.

Moon 0 | Scene 1
The air was heavy with the buzzing of mosquitoes and the dense scent of plant growth. A lean half-elf was trekking through the mud, stopping every so often to free his boots from their sinking prison. He had to keep going; he had just passed Brackenforth, an empty fishing village. Its inhabitants had traveled down the river to get to the trading city for the Earlyear Festival. Even through the thick treecover, Aerick could see the flitting of fireflies and hear cheering.
His focus was redirected to the water when he heard an ominous gurgling sound. He drew his bow, stalking forward as quiet as he could to peek around one of the dark trees. Unable to catch anything, he pulled the branches aside with the end of his bow. On the other side was a tall tiefling, humming softly as he ran his hands along the bark. From his palms came vines, which he strung up in pleasant archways. The tiefling took a few steps back, stumbling in the mud, but satisfied with his work.
Aerick was engrossed by the tiefling’s magic. He was pulled back into reality when he heard a voice. It came from next to the tiefling, and Aerick strained to see who was speaking.
“I’m afraid I’m lost,” a halfling woman said. She seemed concerned, her mouth in a thin, flat line. “I came out to hunt to bring something to the festival. Can you point me in that direction?”
“Of course,” the tiefling answered with a smile. He reached down, his fingertips grazing the water. The pool rippled and a trail of white blossoms emerged, providing a clear path for the woman. “I can walk with you, if that makes you more comfortable.”
The woman’s face contorted at first, before she relaxed into a small smile. “That’s kind of you. What is your name?”
“My companions call me Gander Ghost,” he admitted, his face flushed. “I draw spiritual connections from nature.”
“Gander, hmm? I’m Emerald,” the halfling told him. “I have a spiritual side as well.”
“Hey!” Aerick shouted, deciding to abandon his cover.
Almost immediately, Gander had risen a wall of vines, entangling the half-elf and pushing him up against the willow tree. Emerald drew a peculiar sword from her scabbard, murmuring incantations under her breath.
“Wait! Wait!” Aerick yelled as the vines swung him around. They finally stopped when he was upside-down, hanging from a sturdy branch. “I wasn’t doing anything. I need a guide, too. What’s with you people?”
Gander frowned, but it was quickly replaced with a friendly grin. He released Aerick and watched him fall into the murky water.
“My apologies, young elf. Half-elf,” Gander added when he saw his stubble. “But you did enter by sacred grounds screaming. You could, at the very least, introduce yourself first.”
Aerick pulled himself out of the water, his agility clear as he regained his footing. “My name is Aerick Greenfeather. I’m an archer of an extinct line of half-elves. I’m trying to get to the festival. I didn’t mean to eavesdrop.”
“Uh huh,” Emerald said, raising an eyebrow.
“Please?” Aerick asked.
“Sure. Who am I to deny someone so honest?” Gander replied.
He led the way, wading through the shallow pool toward the reflection of lights. The water barely went past his boots, but he noticed the halfling was struggling. Gander took her hand to help steady her, despite his own clumsy nature. Aerick smirked at them before skipping ahead, leaping onto rocks and roots in order to reach the town first.
