What sort of pokemon would Knives have in the AU? I was thinking Mimikyu but someone got upset over that idea ajdksksllala

Okay imagine!

Vash is trying to resocialise his brother into the world and Knives is just dragging his feet about it. Knives one day meets a mimikyu. He tries to walk around it but he’s the first human that didn’t react horribly and mimikyu just kinda clings to him.

Knives seed how people perceive mimikyu and relates that not only to how people react to his brother but eventually how people react to him too. They treat them like monsters, who hide under human costumes.

And he starts projecting onto mimikyu, and then seeing himself in mimikyu he lashes out in a “why won’t they just leave me a monster alone!” Kinda way, and mimikyu emotionally convey that being lonely kinda sucks. And it’s not so bad having someone who cares about waiting at home wondering where you are

But also I could almost imagine like 4 Pokémon off the top of my tounge that I think would suit knives, any point of the solosis line, Malamar, roserade, lilligant, like there’s so many different ways and options to work with story and Pokémon wise!

Random Thought: Why does all "90's Anime style" fanart just look like Sailor Moon?

Okay, obviously not all fanart looks like it. But if you were to type in "90s anime style" here on Tumblr or DeviantArt at the time of this post, it at least seems to be the majority stand-in for 90s anime aesthetic, right? Especially in the characters' eyes.

Don't me wrong, this is not a knock against Sailor Moon. It is a great anime, and the collective character designs by Kazuko Tadano, Ikuko Ito, and Mari Tominaga among other staff are iconic. So iconic that Tadano was brought back as the character designer for the latest Sailor Moon movies. That is quite the staying power.

But let's be fair, there are plenty of 90s anime out there that can also be used as inspiration. So, here are the names of 11 character designers alongside some gifs of shows/projects they worked on in that role. Some you may not know but you've seen their work, and others you probably know for their distinct art style or association with a franchise.

Things worth noting: First, the years listed here with some anime may reflect when the artists' work started airing, rather than when the anime itself actually started. Some folks listed here enter their projects mid-production in other roles, while others are in the role from the start. Second, each entry will list 1 or 2 projects aired/released during the 90s, but it will be noted if the artist's role continues beyond that with certain franchises. Lastly, these artists are listed in no particular order, so no "top 11" hierarchy. With that said, here's our examples:

Kyle Gaz Garrick

Big anime fan. Love all the classic anime,  Naruto (sometimes he and Soap will do the Naruto run) Dbz, Inuyash. His  absolute favorite is Yu Yu Hakusho, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, HunterxHunter, Trigun and FullMetal Alchemist

He’s amazing at Ping pong, on the base he’s basically unbeatable.

Hell of a amazing baker. When it’s someone’s birthday he’ll make them a nice cake. And some times will randomly make cookies for the teams. Will literally have to fight Ghost because he almost ate all of the cookies.

Loves all animals, but sadly he’s a allergic bunnies. Breaks his sweet heart. Will almost burst into tears if he sees smol puppy or kitten.

Can do hand stands with easy.

Played every Zelda game ever! Link and Zelda are his mine in super smash. Loves Kingdom hearts and losted his mind when Sora in going in the new smash game.

Johnny Soap MacTavish

Also a anime fan. Love Demon Slayer, Ranking Of Kings and Jujutsu Kaisen.

Huge Mario Fan plays all the game and he and Kyle will have Super Smash Tournaments and Mario Kart Racing. He’s the biggest Pokémon fan boy and knows the lore like the back of his had. Played all the games, as a loads of plusies from from differnets games and anime. His all time faveorte starter is Bulbasaur. Wants a real Pikachu.

Can’t for beans. Kyle to each him how make chocolate chip cookies nearly burned kitchen down. Price still made it a new not to let Johnny too cook or touch the stove. At all.

Great with small childien. Has a nephews and niece helped raise and babysits them before he join the army. Big family man for sure. 

Simon Ghost Riley

Foodie. I mean it this man can eat. He has eaten haft of plate of cookies until Kyle told to save some for the other man than once.

Like anime too. Big I mean BIG DBZ fan. Piccolo is favorite. Has at least tried once I trust become a super Saiyan when he was younger. He watched Ranking Of Kings, by the episode 2 is was almost sobbing. Big Digiman fan.

Works out. lmost daily. Considers it his alone time. He’s alone he likes to flex in front of the mirror. He’s very proud of his physique. (Aaaaand Johnny had seen doing it, took a video with him knowing and sent to Kyle. Both still almost wet themselves laughing at it too this day)

Love all animals. When he retires wants to get a small small house with a farm to raise few chickens and dog.

Is afraid swans. Was attacked by one when he was a child. Hated snakes more afraid of the them than swans. Will have a panic attack if he sees one. (Poor baby)

Captain John Price.

Has 2 cats. A white lazy cat that loves to cuddle and calm and chaotic orange one and dose orange cat things. Out no where he would just zoom around the house and annoy his sister and dad. As a million pictures of his fur babies on his phone. So cat dad.

Smokes high end cigars, trying quit smoking. Snores super loudly could wake up the whole base. Denys it too.

Hates doing paperwork. A bit of a workaholic. The boys found him passed out in his desk sometimes.

Dose not play video games game that much. But has plays the Tall tell’s The walking dead. Cried so hard. Loves anime. Trigun being one his all time favorite. Loves metal music. Linkin Park as a special place in his heart.

Huge Pokémon fan. Plays Pokémon Go. Plays Minecraft to help him relax. Has played with Kyle. The two troll the crap out of each when the play.

Would foster some kittens but the man would fall love and keep all them if he could. Wants to get another cat at some point. Again Cat dad. %100

I'll each give them a team of Six, and try to explain it from there! These are for aesthetic purposes, and no way a good team make up lol and of course this got long.

What Pokemon would Vash, Knives, Wolfwood, Meryl and Roberot have?

Vash: Xerneas, Sylveon, Absol, Breloom, Gogoat, and Lycanroc (Midday form)

Okay if you know me this team is biased as hell lol Lots of parallels to Knives because ya know their like two sides of the same coin.

His first pokemon was Eevee, and it evolved into a Sylveon because he has lots of love to give :)

Xerneas are supposed to represent everlasting life! :)))) I'd imagine Vash is responsible for said pokemon but keeps it hidden.

Absol is known as the disaster pokemon! When one appears a disaster follows after, he probs kept running into the poor thing and adopted it

I like to think Breloom and Gogoat are a pair, and Vash probably has a soft spot for grass pokemon. Breloom is a fighter, and Gogoat is a good way to travel.

Vash deserves a dog, the Midday form is very loyal to its trainer and is a lasting companion!

Knives: Yveltal, Umbreon, Aegislash, Zoroark, Kingambit, and Lycanrock (Midnight form)

The flip side of Xerneas is Yveltal, which absorbs the life of everything around :)) Surely in the hands of Knives nothing can go wrong!

Nai probably received an Eevee as well, his just evolved into an Umbreon

Aegislash and Kingambit are self-explanatory they fit his aesthetic. One is literally a floating sword, and Kingambits are leaders and command other pokemon.

A dog for Knives as well! the Midnight form of Lycanroc is more bloodthirsty than its day counterpart.

Zoroark just seems like an all around good Pokémon for him, it can do his bidding lol

Wolfwood: Silvally, Krookodile, Zebstrika, Darkrai, Banette, Mightyena

:))) Type: Null a pokemon that was experimented on, and has great power! But forced to wear its mask to suppress it :)))) They evolve into Silvally when a solid and unbreakable bond form, just seems like a good pokemon for him! This was probably his first pokemon!

Banette and Darkrai were accidental for sure, Banette's are pokemon with a vengeance and will kill those who wronged them. Darkrai the nightmare pokemon! Seems like it fits the aesthetic of the Punisher.

Straight up I think a Sandile bit him and he couldn't get rid of it lol Krookodile is goofy as hell, he just vibes.

Zebstrika is ill-tempered, but it likes Wolfwood a lot its the equivalent of his motorcycle lol

Deserves a dog as well! And while Mightyena isn't really a wolf, it's close enough.

Meryl: Mareep, Unown, Furret, Pachirisu, Rotom, Bewear

She reminds me of a Mareep I can't explain it lol Probs her first pokemon and can't bring herself to evolve it.

Meryls Bewear will beat the shit out of people, the strongest pokemon on her team it vibes check people lol

Rotom is her camera! Very helpful! She probably picked up Unown from college and felt bad leaving it behind so it just follows her around.

Furret is her comfort pokemon, very soft and huggable, she'd also look so cute with a Pachirisu hanging out on her shoulders.

Roberto: Spinda, Klefki, Polteageist, Toucannon, Fletchling, Persian

He likes to drink found the Spinda outside of a bar and straight up stole it.

Doesnt know how he got Klefki just appeared and he can not get rid of it! Was going to use Polteageist as a flask, turned out to be a pokemon! Who knew? Also can not get rid of it

Fletchling and Persian are actually pokemon he's actually wanted and caught. Fletchling lights his cigarette too lazy to evolve it, Persian is a bitch and is good a threatening people.

Him and Toucannon, have the same vibes. But his Toucannon actually likes to fight and will cut a bitch.

Ghostwire: Tokyo - This was a given since practically everything I post on this blog is about the game. I just love it so much!

Pokémon (Ultra Sun, Black, Shield, Legends Arceus, and Scarlet) - Pokémon is my childhood. My COMFORT game. I'm sad? I play a Pokémon game. It just makes me happy. :)

Kingdom Hearts 2 - Fun fact! I didn't have a memory card for my PS2 for a long time. So any game I played? Never was able to save my progress. So long story short, I played KH2 so much, I usually was able to beat it within a day without needing a memory card.

Spyro: Year of The Dragon - Another childhood fav. Stand by this was one of the best Spyro games!

Hi-Fi Rush - It comes from the same creators of Ghostwire: Tokyo. Why wouldn't I love it! Chai's a dork, and I love all the other characters as well!

Blood Blockcade Battlefront - The creator who made Trigun also made this series. It's wild one, to say the least.

The Case Study of Vanitas - It has steampunk/fantasy elements combined into one. Both things I love. Oh, and Vampires too.

Jujutsu Kaisen - Why do I like this? Well, it's because of Yuuji, Sukuna, Gojo, Megumi, oh and EVERY other character! Also, the fights are so cool!

Thoughts on Trigun Stampede

I can see why this new (reboot-retelling-reimagining-prequel?) show may be divisive for fans of the OG ‘98 show. But for me it’s an improvement on the ‘98 version in a lot of ways (not all ways, but many).

The OG anime was the VERY FIRST anime I ever saw besides a few episodes of Sailor Moon or Pokémon that I may have caught while babysitting. I saw it in high school (2003-ish?) after a friend of mine cos-played Vash for an anime convention.

While I really enjoyed the show (specifically Vash’s arc and character), there was LOTS I didn’t like and it informed my hot-and-cold opinions on anime for a long time.

I adored Vash; I loved the world building of the planet and concept of the PLANTS; I really loved the dynamic between the 4 main protagonists. The music was bad ass. The thematic questions of when is it okay to choose who lives and dies (and whether humanity deserves to be saved) were excellently developed, and the Christian imagery was *chefs kiss*

But the show irritated me in a lot of ways too. I hated what I dubbed ‘face-changing’ when the animation style would shift so suddenly from serious to exaggerated. I found the character design of most of the villains (and Milly if I’m being honest-not her character, her design) to be largely ugly. The animation was stilted and the frame rates were sooooo low even in big fight scenes. And Knives I felt was under-utilized as a villain and his conclusion a bit rushed.

I re-watched the OG before I started watching Trigun Stampede and my opinion stayed pretty much the same (with the added exception that I found Vash’s objectification of women- facade or no- early in the show to not fit tonally with his overall character and was a bit squicky).

But now I’m watching the NEW version and….I’m SUPER digging it. Almost ALL of the things that I disliked about the 98 version have been removed or improved upon and MOST of the things I liked have remained or been updated.

The story has less filler overall. One COULD argue that it is ‘rushed’ but with the announcement of a second season, I really don’t feel like things from before have been removed, just delayed until a later part of the story. The show is more tonally consistent throughout, something I found jarring in the OG.

I feel like the villains, especially Knives, are legitimately threatening, and in some cases are given sympathetic backstories which made them more fleshed out. I appreciated, for instance, Vash being given a history with Monev/Rollo. It made that fight more meaningful since they had a connection to each-other beyond ‘I’ve been told to kill you’.

I still really enjoy Wolfwood as a character here, and am enjoying seeing more of his past. His relationship with Vash is still extremely gripping/endearing. Love the use of Needle-Noggin again.

I think they’ve done something smart with Meryl by giving her development beyond learning to love Vash. She starts out naive here, which is NOT how she is in the OG, but she’s still as driven. I think by shifting her development over 2 seasons and almost treating this season as her ‘backstory’ she’ll be more interesting and three-dimensional for it by the time the show concludes. Not that I disliked her in the original, I just found her more bland than Vash, Wolfwood, and even Milly, as she was a more static character.

Let’s talk about ANIMATION. As stated above, I have no nostalgia for the animation of the original. I found the face-changing off-putting, the secondary character and villain design outside of the main protagonists to be hard to even look at (I’m not including Vash, Wolfwood, Legato, Knives here as they all have excellent and unique designs) and the actual quality to be cheap and stilted.

While I DO think that the OG hand-drawn animation could be a bit more unique and expressive at times in its shadows and lighting (think Vash and his blue glowing eyes in silhouette), this updated CGI animation has almost everything else in its favour for me. No face-changing or off-model characters! Clean, crisp lines! Dynamic and fast-paced movement! Clear and unique characteristics coming across in weight and mass and angles! Beautiful set dressing! Fantastic colours everywhere! Energetic camera tracking! Jacket!

I will say that one thing I keep going back to as something the OG does slightly better is Vash himself. I think he’s just a tad TOO soft-spoken in this version and his comedic and goofy facade has been lost a bit. He’s still fundamentally the same person as the original and he’s so engaging and sympathetic as a character- that remains the same if not better- but I feel his ‘spark’ may have been lost a bit in the re-telling. I’m glad they kept his original voice actor for the update, and I like his more mature performance here.

I’m of two minds on his redesign as well. Part of me loves the new arm and jacket and fluffy hair, and part of me wishes he had a bit more ‘presence’ on screen. He seems…smaller, somehow? His facial expressions are just right, though! He has that ‘older-than-they-look' softness about him that really comes across in his eyes and voice. I’m excited to see if season two continues to bring back more elements of the original character (sleeker, more inconspicuous arm design, and buttoned up coat, for instance).

Overall I’ve enjoyed revisiting Trigun in general, and I’m happy to have a production that has taken something that I loved but saw as flawed, and polished it up a bit and made it shiny and new.

9/10 would recommend.

I used to roleplay Toph Beifong from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and her adult verse from The Legend Of Korra! She was actually the very first muse I ever brought to Tumblr in 2012. Her original url was rulebreakertoph, which was deleted and then remade. Then, I eventually rebooted her AGAIN, over at @tremorrekt. Unfortunately, I do not remember the email address to get into the blog, so, she is archived forever.

Writing as Toph brought a lot of milestones for me— my first major role in a group plot, my first time doing a face reveal for an RP community— even Grey DeLisle, the voice actress for Azula, followed my original Toph blog! I believe Dante Basco gave our group a shoutout on his Tumblr blog as well. Aaahhh, the early 2010’s of Tumblr, where we allowed celebrities to hang out on this hellsite.

Toph is also how I found my way into a lot of other RPCs. She was very easy to insert into other communities— I stuck my foot into the Pokémon RPC for the first time in 2015 before I officially delved in a year later. I had a complex Trigun Maximum verse with some of the OG Trigun fans here. And I had an awesome DC verse too. Toph was so much fun!

Your right! Absol does know Vash well and it missed him to much to truely stay mad forever, and after spending so much time being spoiled by Milly and Meryl how could it not want to be bombarded with affection from Vash.

However Vash never took absols pokeball back off Meryl after he shot lagato.

And depending on if I followed the manga or the anime would change a lot, if Vash just left it with Meryl again to go fight Knives would it be mad at Meryl for stopping it following? If it saw Vash and Knifes flying away after that whole event would it chase after them both before it could be caught?

Absol definitely has some of its own demons it fights and sometimes struggles accepting the choices Vash makes on its behalf. But at the end of it all Absol would 9/10 times stand at Vash’s side no matter what (the 1/10 times usually involves the girls and food)

I also like to think the girl’s traveling with Absol becoming a running joke amongst insurance companies that Bernardelli Insurance Society was somehow predicting and manipulating the market of insurance with Absols help

Im still really stuck on remembering what things have influenced my art. Two ppl have told me it recalls old Soviet cartoons, which is super fucking flattering bc that shits so aesthetic, but i didnt learn about it at all until a few years ago and ive been drawing my entire life

All i really have that i know inspired child me is

-the monsters in Dr. Seuss books, i already made a post about Halloween is Grinch Night go watch it its good

-Tony DiTerlizzi’s art on book covers but Most Especially in Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You and im actually considering purchasing a new copy since i lost mine somewhere years and years ago and it was my fuckin bible way back when

-Pokémon. Holy shit Pokémon. Its been such a big part of my entire life and its the only /fandom thing/ im 0% anxious about adoring beyond words

-i used to collect Yu-Gi-Oh cards so that probably had a part in it

-i found @bogleech’s art when i was 10 and its been a pretty massive influence,, too

-The Future is Wild! The cartoon got me into the actual documentaries and i begged my parents for the whole box set and watched the shit out of all of it. Flish.

-in 2010 i think i saw a part of a short with spec bio martians in it and it was low quality and not all that long but i still think about it a lot even if haven’t seen it since and sometimes doubt it existed at all

2010 was also the year my cousin showed me anime, which I’d known about vaugely before, and those were Cowboy Bebop, the first episode of Soul Eater, Death Note (notebook of death), Trigun, a show with Ghost Dogs in Fancy Necklaces that i cannot remember yhe fucking name of at all, Inuyasha, FMA:B, and some other shit probably.

The only ones i kept watching (and yet havent finished bc, i suck,,,) were FMA:B and Soul Eater

I feel like theres a lot more that i just cannot fucking remember at all for some awful reason. My brain sucks and so do i.

More modern(ish) inspirations! A very very very incomplete list:

In 2013(ish) i bought a scifi art magazine with a lot of tips and tutorials of vastly varying quality and somewhere towards th back of the book was a list of tips by Wayne Barlowe and it was the first time i saw his art and name and he’s still my fav

Also from the same bookstore, but a year or so later i found an artbook from Terryl Whitlatch and she’s currently ties with Barlowe in my heart as the absolute fucking best

I don’t really remember if i saw that Rankin Bass movie with the dragons when i was little but its art is wonderful and i just love it sm…

In 2013 (again) i started getting interest in some way-older-than-me things that have inspired me a lot but i was 15 and thats pretty far past Those Formative Years but

-Its when i learned about the aforementioned Russian cartoons, and also stuff like Moomin. Def more but Im bad at lists and having a decent memory oops.

trigun Pokémon thoughts

so more rambling, I’ve been tossing up how Pokémon would fit into trigun without contradicting the world already and the human race taking Pokémon with them made some sense, not all Pokémon but having selected Pokémon or Pokémon genes on the ship in a stasis made some sense. They’d be an organic extension of lost tech kinda 

Knives would see the relationship Pokémon devolved with humans as a similar scenario as humankind creating the plants, these organic living powerhouses capable to shape the world. But Pokémon already proved to be weak and inferior in his eyes because they became ‘subservient’ to humans and seeks to save the plants from repeating the Pokémon's fate. 

But like the plants, humans, relics and lost technology survive as Pokémon. 

Vash found a part of the crashed ship and it just happened to have a functioning pokeball containing absol. how long Vash has had absol is up in the air

Vash also leaves absol with Meryl and Milly in the 5th moon incident. or when they find out Vash is missing they do find absol’s pokeball with a “Do not open 👍” note on it. Though Meryl does feel like the ball almost vibrates in her hand before the explosion goes off. Absol is not pleased when reunited Vash, the grudges a Pokémon can hold can be a long thing.
