I hate that button layouts have that default diamond formation I'm an old school gamer. My first console was the NES. When using that classic controller it allowed me to hold down the B button, and use the side of the thumb knuckle to press the A button. That and the Turbo Grafix 16 were the only consoles that come to mind in regards to that.I remember shortly after, getting an SNES for Christmas. Playing games like Mega Man, or any other run and gun game was so frustrating since the lay out didn't allow for effectively holding down a button and pressing another. The only way I could accomplish this was to lay the controller down and piano the buttons, which make the L and R buttons impossible to reach.Am I the only that that feels this? Is the diamond formation THAT much better? Is there a technique that I'm not getting? Or perhaps, have games been developed without the need such button sequences? Afternoon. I'm trying to get a feel for the homebrew scene on the Saturn. I was able to grab a copy of the Vandal Hearts English translation. It looks good. My question is, would people mind suggesting the best (in their opinion) homebrew games, hacks, and/or translations? One of the great things about Game BASIC is how easy it makes it to access the Saturn’s peripherals, including the internal backup RAM, external memory cartridges, and even the Saturn Floppy Disk Drive. With a setup like this, you’ll have plenty of space to save your programs and you can use a real keyboard for text entry. You can even start experimenting with different forms of input, like analog controls and light guns! But without access to the tools a PC provides, it will be difficult to make nice-looking sprites, textures, and 3D models. So, this will still limit what you’re capable of. Regardless, this is a great option for the sheer fun factor of “Hey look! I’m programming with my Saturn!” or if you have no ability to connect your Saturn to a PC.

You can even go this route with a Saturn emulator, giving you easy access to improved keyboard, mouse, and storage options. I’ve confirmed that Mednafen successfully emulates Game BASIC and allows for keyboard and mouse pass-through input, meaning you can do a whole lot of Saturn development with very little barrier to entry.
