DJ Spen - "Craze at Midnight" Montreal Mix Sessions Vol. 4 by Lafleche Song released in 1999. Mix released in 2000. House

Here's a somewhat overlooked house banger from the one and only DJ Spen, a music legend from the city of Baltimore who's been at this shit for over 40 years and continues to rack up accolades and high placements on Billboard's dance chart while running his own super prolific record label, Quantize Recordings.

Before we get into 1999's "Craze at Midnight," though, let's try to trace the path that led Spen there, because it really is a little bit nuts…

Spen's career began in the mid-80s as a teenaged DJ in a now somewhat fabled hip hop crew called Numarx, who not only had Spen as one of their members, but also had future president of Def Jam Records, Kevin Liles, too. Numarx had a hardcore edge to them, and when acts like LL Cool J and Run-D.M.C. would swing by the Charm City to perform, these guys would be one of the acts who would open.

But despite presenting themselves as tough hip hoppers, the song that would inevitably end up bringing them the most success was their considerably softer "Girl You Know It's True." And yes, it's the very same one that Milli Vanilli would make world-famous in 1988, eventually ensnaring themselves into a very big lip-syncing scandal when it was revealed that the guys who were 'performing' their songs weren't actually the ones who were responsible for singing the words 😨. Numarx's original version of the tune did not fare well at home, but where it did prove popular was in Germany, which is where it's believed that Milli Vanilli producer Frank Farian had first heard it and then hatched the idea that his group should make their own version of it too.

So that's one crazy piece of info about Spen. Another one is that in 1989, he was drawn away from hip hop towards dance music and ended up joining renowned Baltimore production and remix team The Basement Boys, who worked on tracks for people like Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul, Erykah Badu, Ultra Naté, and Crystal Waters, including producing Waters' own biggest hit, the terrifically catchy early 90s club classic, "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)." Not entirely sure that Spen had much to do with that tune specifically, though, as a little 1991 Baltimore Sun profile of the Basement Boys and that song in particular doesn't seem to mention his name at all 🤷‍♂️.

But while remaining a Basement Boy up until 2004, Spen would also launch his own solo career as a producer too. 1995 would see him debut with a 12-inch on Basement Boys Records called "A Feelin'," which presented his gospel-house group, Jasper Street Company. More Jasper Street 12-inches would then follow, but in '99, he would drop his own Disco Dreams Volume 2 without them, on a London-based label called Black Vinyl Records.

And it's on this 12-inch that you'll find Spen's "Craze at Midnight," a terrific instrumental house jam with, really, none of that gospel or soulful flair that would largely end up defining his long career as a dance music producer and remixer. And according to Discogs, this gem only appeared on a small handful of commercial mixes at around the time of its release, including one by Montréal native Lafleche, as part of his Montreal Mix Sessions Vol. 4 on Tiga's Turbo Recordings in 2000.

So, with a small looped-up bit that's been lifted from the very song that lends its own name to this one—1977's "At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up)" by Rufus & Chaka Khan—Spen manages to go effectively wild all over his beat with some very extensive and unpredictably rubbery, nylon-squeaky, and wigged-out synthesizer pizzazz. And while all this keyboard virtuosity is already enough to blissfully journey with, Spen still holds his final card close to the vest, until he builds up enough anticipation for something else to finally drop. And you get the sense that it's gonna be a new and ecstatic wrinkle that continues on this same topsy-turvy path of synthy goodness—because he hasn't used anything else yet—but you actually couldn't be more wrong, because what he chooses to unleash instead is a perfectly placed melody of swingin' jazz horns. Surprise! 📯📯📯

So Spen may have co-written "Girl You Know It's True;" he may have co-crafted some fire remixes and beats for some of the world's biggest pop and R&B stars; his record label may be a fixture of the Billboard dance chart and gotten a Grammy nom too; but in my book, one tune of his that hasn't received anywhere near enough of its deserved shine is this extremely fun and enjoyable turn-of-the-millennium knockout. Given what an entity this guy had already proven himself as, it's a wonder that "Craze at Midnight" didn't end up dotting all those big and ephemeral commercial house mixes with the illustrations or photos of sexy girls on their covers, because damn it, it should have!

And what's more is that with this version of it from Lafleche's Montreal Mix Sessions release, you also get to hear it playing alongside The Hydraulic Dogs' "Shake It for Me," another great house track that I've posted about in the past, which samples some of the Roger Troutman vocoder lines from 2Pac's own "California Love" 😍.

He said something that's interesting to me and really it's scintillating. He said that people will bring their beauty in their mustang GTO their mustang Boss or mustang turbo and mustang with the big cubic inch and the with all sorts of things that I came out with a larger motor and things like that and drop drop it off for the conversion process. Will you look pretty good if we make it mid-engine and he says we have the shop and we have the capabilities and for just a little effort is going to handle twice as well and we'll go three times as fast it's worth it too if you keep it with the rear drive it's really cheesy it's not even independent and you go bounce it off the road is a high in the shop so I think I'll start with the engine and just make a cradle and once they make the cradles the same every time Harry that's pretty fast cuz then you make up the wiring harnesses or you buy new ones and just hook it up and it takes minutes and I know what he's saying it will not take very long once you get it straightened away what you have to do you move the engine and you relocate the accessories and rerun wires and you have it open anyways this would not take long and it needs to redo all the stuff and the motor be out in the open and he said you can almost work on it in the chat in the cradle that's kind of true too because to hook it up and folded up onto a hoist it's kind of a pain in the ass or even a stand you can stick it right in there the transaxle gears would have to go in first and you don't really change anything you just put the motor in and then you take the top end off it's almost like really easy not going to go ahead and try it it sounds like it should be easy it says I guess you could lay on the tire there's a way to do that they have equipment for it

Movies I watched this Week # 145 (Year 3/Week 41):

The Axe, a French thriller by Costa-Gavras, about a laid-off executive at a large paper manufacturing firm, who fruitlessly tries for 2 years to find another new job. Eventually he becomes desperate enough that he starts killing his job competitors. A bit like Walter White, it's a roundabout critique of turbo-capitalism and corporate greed, served under a facade of black humor. 6/10.

Like a benevolent father to his employees, he seems helpful and understanding - as long as it suits his very self-centered needs. Manipulative and Machiavellian, it's hard to take your eyes off him. 9/10.

🍿 Only my 4th Michael Mann movie, the King of LA crime city at night, the terrific thriller Collateral. A west-coast 'Taxi Driver' action thriller, with Tom Cruise as a killing Terminator, that like a bunny, dosen't stop. It starts with a quiet, beautiful prelude at the cab, and ends, after a long action-adventure, with the same couple who survived a long, bloody adventure, walking the streets at dawn, and [like the end of 'Midnight Run'] can't find a cab to take them home. 8/10.

Bekas ("Up and away"), my first Kurdish film from Iraq [actually, it’s a Swedish production, directed by an Iraqi-born Swedish director]. Beautifully set in yellow tint in bare desert landscapes, it's about 2 young brothers, orphans with nobody to care for them. After seeing a Superman movie in the poor village where they live, they decide to travel to America and meet their hero. (Photo Above).

The trailer doesn’t represent its simple mood. 7/10.

The mirror, my 4th unique meta-film by prosecuted Iranian director Jafar Panahi, about a little girl trying to find her way home. Mina is a second grader whose mom didn't pick her up from school, so she takes off on a scary journey through the dangerous, chaotic streets of Tehran (3 accidents are seen in the background).

But in the exact middle of this sweet, empathetic kid-film, the little girl is heard saying 'I don't want to to be in this movie any more', and the second half follows her clandestinely from across the streets, as she's supposedly no longer play-acting. The distinction between reality and make-belief is blurred and kept unexplained.

Haider, an interesting 3 hours Indian adaptation of 'Hamlet', the director's 3rd part of a Shakespeare trilogy (After Macbeth and Othello). Set on the background of the modern day conflict in Kashmir, it's filled with cinematic anachronisms like Kalashnikov battles in snowy graveyards, and queen Gertrude strapping a belt of hand granades and suicide kills herself. Poetic and rich, it uses dozens of beautiful locations to tell the Oedipal story of murder and revenge.

Unfortunately, there are only a couple of song/dance numbers, the gravediggers scene, and the Nightingale Bismil dance.

🍿 My 4th gay drama by Ira Sachs, Passages, his latest and the least enjoyable of them. A love triangle between a married male couple in Paris, one of whom falls in love with Adèle Exarchopoulos. But this small 'unconventional wrinkle' didn't elevate the flat narrative. Especially when the main character was such a flawed, vain and unsympathetic man. 3/10.

🍿 In Zero Fucks Given she brilliantly plays a young stewardess at a low-fare carrier based in the Canary Island. After the death of her mother in a car accident, her life is rudderless, emotionally stunted, hard. Like the cinematic style of the story, episodic, sporadic, without relief. 8/10.

Unfortunately, the story turns into horror when a sadistic psychopath kidnaps a woman and keeps her locked in a pressure chamber. 5/10.

One plus for a dream sequence that replays the baby carriage scene from 'Battleship Potemkin'.

The Burial, a David and Goliath legal drama about a flamboyant Johnnie Cochran-style lawyer who takes a case from small-time funeral home director Tommy Lee Jones, and - Surprise, motherfuckers! - wins big against an evil corporation. Old cliches of black identity, southern graciousness and old racism tropes makes this a shallow and forgettable effort. That that's even before they get into the second half of the movie, which they spend in trial; I can't stand fake courtroom dramatizations. 2/10.

Andrew McLauchlan - "Love Story (Edit)" Turbo Sampler (Vol.2) 2000 Techno

Andrew McLauchlan is more or less a techno one-hit wonder, but boy, oh boy, does that one hit of his fuckin' *bang,* man. Originally from Scotland, McLauchlan moved to London to start a small techno label called Figment in '98, who then released a double 12-inch EP compilation the following year called Chorusline, on which the original version of “Love Story” appears. But that track then got picked up by the larger, Manchester-based Bush Records in 2000, and they ended up spawning a “re-edit” version of "Love Story," which became extremely popular among techno crowds at the time.

And that particular re-edit really has to be one of the greatest techno bangers of the early 2000s, if not all time. McLauchlan basically samples a bunch of bits and pieces off of a dusty Brazilian samba record from the early 70s and re-arranges them all to yield his own wild, modern dancefloor masterpiece, pairing those different sampled parts with four-on-the-floor kickdrums and a hand-clap that forms a backbeat.

But it sounds like it takes some time for all of those samples to really start getting deployed, because pretty early on, McLauchlan actually laces this remarkable techno-samba sweat-fest frolic with a wandering piano line that appears to be one of his very own making. And that unpredictable piano piece has a way of effectively leading us from outside the party venue to the right-smack-dab-middle of its revelrous dancefloor.

Now, you might notice a discrepancy here between the fact that this is a very popular techno tune, but that its YouTube play count is extremely low. That's because this exact edit, as it appears on Turbo Records' Turbo Sampler (Vol.2), is just a shortened version of the full-length re-edit by a couple minutes, and has nowhere near the same amount of plays as some other YouTube uploads of the song. It's actually funny that "Love Story" is even included on a Turbo sampler in the first place, because the label never actually released the song themselves. But within that same year, it was also included on label owner Tiga's Mixed Emotions double-disc mix, and maybe that release helped to raise "Love Story"'s profile in North America, since it was definitely one of the mix's best tracks. And maybe because of that mix, people just naturally associate "Love Story" with Turbo too, which is why it's on their sampler? I'm just guessing here 🤷‍♂️.

But also, be wary of the misinfo that's floating around about this mesmerizing dance bop. Places like WhoSampled credit the song's samples to a track by Zé Catimba and Brasil Ritmo called "Martin Cererê" (sometimes written as "Martim Cererê"), but the website actually supplies the wrong version of the song. This version here, by G.R.E.S. Imperatriz Leopoldinense, a samba school in Rio de Janeiro that Zé Catimba himself co-founded, is the far more likely culprit 👇:

Either way, the two sampled vocal parts that form this tune's "chorus" make for the best parts. They represent subtle, infectious changes to the beat that ultimately lend to this track slapping as hard as it does. Whenever McLauchlan pumps those vocal samples in, the frenetically clanging keys that provide the lead melody throughout most of the track—different from the ones from his own piano piece—drop out, and so does the thumpiness of the kickdrum (though not always). It's a pair of small changes, but they're really vital to making this song as terrific as it is. Each "chorus" generates a small amount of anticipation for the listener as they wait for that kick drum thump and piano to return each time. And by the way, that underlying piano riff might be a looped-up sample of McLauchlan's own as well, since it doesn't sound like it comes from "Martin Cererê" 🤔.
