Who of the children of Thranduil is:
The most noble.
most mischievous.
most wise.
most dangerous.
Why do you pick them for that trait?
What an AWESOME question--thank you! I'm not sure if you're new to my blog but if you are, Welcome to the SotWK AU! <3 I love how the qualities you asked about easily falls in perfect and honest assignment, one to each of my OC Princes! I guess it's cool that each Thranduilion is quite distinct from the other.
Superlatives with the Thranduilions
Most Noble: Crown Prince Mirion
Tumblr media
SotWK Fancast: Henry Cavill as Mirion Thranduilion
Mirion was such a paragon of honor and virtue that his own father looked up to him. Thranduil would sometimes even tell people that the Crown Prince would make a better king than him one day. Despite the pressure of such high praise, Mirion worked hard to live up to those expectations, and he found joy in that life of service to his people and his family. His kindness and humility made him beloved by everyone... except for the Necromancer in Dol Guldur, who aimed to see him dead and out of the way. The Necromancer used Mirion's sense of duty against him and tricked the prince into sacrificing himself in an ill-fated attempt to bring down Dol Guldur.
Most Mischievous: Prince Gelir
Tumblr media
SotWK Fancast: Sam Claflin as Gelir Thranduilion
Gelir exhibited the same rebellious, free-spirited personality that Thranduil possessed in his youth, but had to curb when he took on the responsibility of kingship. The fourth-born prince challenged and skirted protocol every chance he got, and often complained about feeling stifled by the rules attached to his royal station. He always enjoyed making jokes and pulling pranks and initiating spontaneous adventures, even when it caused (harmless) trouble and chaos. Fortunately, he was also charming and likeable enough to soothe the nerves of people who might otherwise have taken offense at his shenanigans.
Most Wise: Prince Arvellas
Tumblr media
SotWK Fancast: Rupert Friend as Arvellas Thranduilion
Arvellas's superior intelligence was evident from infancy, and he was the only prince to devote himself almost entirely to academics in lieu of martial arts and other physical pursuits preferred by the Silvans. As a result, Arvellas caused the number of scholars in the realm to rise and rival that of the other great kingdoms in Middle-earth. He became the Woodland Realm's most skilled healer, most accomplished linguist, and best diplomat. He was responsible for the realm's alliances with the Longbeard dwarves who came to live in the Grey Mountains and Erebor, but those friendships were greatly damaged in the tragedy of his death. More than his innate intelligence, Arvellas's wisdom came from his sense of justice and goodness, and his ability to remain calm and act prudently under stress or in dire situations.
Most Dangerous: Prince Turhir
Tumblr media
SotWK Fancast: Sam Heughan as Turhir Thranduilion
If Mirion was hated by the Dark Lord, Turhir was coveted by him. Only his younger age and lesser experience prevented Turhir from completely surpassing Thranduil as the greatest warrior of the realm. He excelled almost supernaturally in all physical challenges, and had flawless combat instincts. Like Thranduil, he never shied away from violence and killing when deemed necessary. Turhir's heart was just as golden as the rest of his family, but a lifetime as a soldier (not properly balanced with other pursuits) took its toll differently on his mind and spirit as the Darkness spread in Mirkwood. He also had the misfortune of being the only one to witness the deaths of his brothers Mirion and Arvellas, and that damaged him in ways that would never heal. From there his emotional state deteriorated so badly that his parents began to fear that he was prone to corruption by the Darkness--which may be what the Necromancer had intended.
But what about Prince Legolas?
As I have mentioned in past headcanon posts, what makes Legolas so impressively multi-faceted (especially as he appears in the movies) is his wide range of skills. He is the jack-of-all traits that carries pieces of his family's best qualities in him. The youngest Thranduilion is naturally gifted on his own right, but his greatest asset (in my HC at least) is his ability to adapt, mimic, and learn. And he had not only both parents, but also four older brothers to help raise him and pass their knowledge onto him. Having older siblings to look up to as role models, to train with and to motivate him to do better, helped Legolas to grow into an incredible warrior and excellent friend and companion to the Fellowship.

Hi Naneth! Do you know and/or play D&D? So...I've recently started playing it and got addicted to the game (surprisingly for someone who's always been a bookworm than a gamer hehe), and now I can't help but be curious what would the Thranduillions (maybe bonus Thranduil and his wife?) be like as D&D characters (or what kind of characters would they create and play as during D&D sessions)? Ooooh, now I wonder what a Thranduillion D&D session would look like XD!
Omg it's amazing that you asked me this question, because literally just this morning I was chatting with my sister about her starting to play tabletop D&D with her old college buddies! I said to her, "Man I'm jealous and I wish I could join in, but I would just be so lost and confused and annoying because I'll need everything explained to me multiple times." XD My sister is also trying to get me to play BG3, and although it's really, really tempting, I'm afraid even venturing into that would take up what little free time I have left!
Anyway, going into your question that I LOVE so much, about what the Thranduilions would be like if they had a D&D session. Using my limited knowledge of the actual gameplay, it would go something like this:
The Royal House of Greenwood Plays Dungeons & Dragons
Characters Chosen
Everyone in the family prefers to play Elves but sometimes may choose a Half-Elf, Human, Dwarf, or Halfling. Legolas may dare to try controversial classes (i.e. dragonborn, half-orc), but only when their parents aren't playing.
Mirion: Barbarian. Values Strength.
Turhir: Paladin. Values Constitution.
Arvellas: Wizard. Values Wisdom.
Gelir: Ranger. Values Dexterity.
Legolas: Druid. Values Wisdom.
Thranduil: Rogue. Values Dexterity.
Maereth: Bard. Values Charisma.
Tumblr media
How They Would Play
The family likes to run the campaign as a group that quests together, rather than individuals, so they work together as a team.
Arvellas is the Dungeon Master mostly because he wrote the guide books and has by far the most organized brain among the brothers. He's also the calmest, most patient, and can keep his brothers in line in case things descend into chaos.
Legolas was the ringleader who initiated the idea to start/play this game in the first place. He begged and helped Arvellas to create the game books, with Arvellas wrangling Legolas's wild enthusiasm and all-over-the-place ideas into brilliant manuals. Legolas also crafted the dice, miniatures, and game boards himself, and he always has the most elaborately detailed character sheets.
Mirion is not much for this sort of game but is absolutely happy to humor Legolas and spend time with his family. Barely knows what is going on and essentially just follows what Legolas tells him he "has" to do. His character is often first to get injured or in trouble, but he laughs it off. Is eating an unholy amount of snacks the entire time.
Turhir is the tactical genius who thinks of creative ways to solve problems and defeat opponents. Mostly does his thing to keep the quest going and everyone alive, but also gives advice regarding combat tactics when asked. Is quietly the MVP of the campaign.
Gelir is just really annoyed by the concept of dice controlling his fate and blames lousy dice rolls a lot. Protests and argues against the "logic" of difficulty checks. Heckles any of his brothers who "mess up" (in his opinion). Chooses courses of action based on what's flashiest instead of what's wise. (He's much more strategic in real life, but this is a GAME. Plus he likes to mess with Legolas.)
Thranduil picks up on the game super quickly despite having the least experience. Frequently leaves the table to attend to crown business (or grab more wine). Assigns Turhir to play for him in his absence because they have the same mindset. Drinks a crazy amount of wine during the course of the game (it helps him relax) but still does not appear drunk, nor is his gameplay affected.
Maereth never gets into trouble (in the game) because literally everyone is half-focused on protecting her. Eventually she gently removes herself from the game so they can play for real without having to consider her. Helped Legolas make the dice, miniatures, and game boards.
I hope you (and all D&D/BG3 readers) enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed writing it! Thank you for this very fun Ask! <3

3rd Day of Yule: “Three French Hens”
Prince Turhir & Prince Gelir Thranduilion
Third Age 228
Banks of the Forest River, Northwest of Greenwood the Great
“I know he might look it, but he is not scary or mean at all. He is just really tall, you see?”
Gelir pointed in the direction of the wain, where Turhir was helping several men unload the cargo of sacks, baskets, and barrels--all containing food straight from the royal cellars. Alas, the sight of his brother towering over the other adults like an oak among saplings, probably did little to support his case.
The elfling glanced back at the two Lothéod children hiding (badly) behind a woman that cradled a bundled up babe in her arms. Gelir had never seen Men before, whether young or grown, and he wondered how close these were to him in age. Judging by their desperate clinging to their mother's skirts, they could not possibly be older than his seven years. Or was it normal for Edain bairns to be so meek and quivering?
He noticed the smaller of the two children braving a peek out at him, with dry, frost-cracked lips rounded in a pink “O”. When Gelir cracked a grin at her, she smiled back, uncertainly, but enough that he saw the gap where her front teeth should have been. It drove the young Thranduilion’s desire to try again.
“We brought you hens--three of the best, I raised them myself! Do you like eggs?” He pushed on in spite of their persistent quailing. “If you like other things, we brought loads for you to try! You should start with the fig pudding, my mother said you might like that, and on the way here, we even brought down a wild boar! Well, Turhir did with his spear, but I spotted it first! There is plenty of food--you will not have to eat your horse!”
Then the woman made a loud, strange sound that made Gelir stop suddenly. To his dismay, he realized that she was weeping. What had he said wrong? The Lothéod loved their horses best, Turhir had told him, but in the bitterness of a cruel winter, Men would feed even that to their young rather than let them starve.
“They cannot understand you, honeg.” Turhir said gently as he came up next to him. “They speak only Mannish.”
“Oh.” Gelir’s face fell, but only for a moment, until his brother laid a bundle of thick woolen fabric in his arms. He watched as the elder prince approached the woman, who, somehow, did not shrink away from the giant of an elf. Tuhir spoke softly to her, fluent in a tongue that Gelir had only begun to discover in his lessons, and draped a Silvan-woven cloak around her shoulders. But she only dissolved in heavier sobs.
“Þancie, Þancie!” she cried, and threw her arms around the elf-prince.
Gelir took his cue to rush forward and copy his brother’s example. He moved too quickly, and the children were too stunned, and they were soon wrapped in the sumptuous warmth of their new winter cloaks.
And finally, finally--the quivering ceased and when Gelir laughed, so did they.
“Turhir,” the elfling said, turning back to his brother, who was acquainting himself with the little baby. “What is their word for ‘play’?”
“Plega,” Turhir responded, and smiled as the faces of the children lit up in recognition. “But before you do that, let them fill their bellies and regain their strength.” He started to guide the woman back to the snow-covered cottage, windows now lit merrily by the light of a renewed hearth. “Come show them everything we have brought.”
“Yes!” Gelir grabbed the hands of his new friends. “Starting with Ammë’s fig pudding!"

5th Day of Yule: “Five Golden Rings”
King Thranduil & Sons
Third Age 491
Bar Lasgalen, Palace of the Elvenking
As the lone rider came into clearer view in his progress up the snowy road to the palace, Thranduil began to descend the steps that led to the main courtyard. He sensed the rushed footsteps of someone coming up behind him, and he took one step lightly to the side to make room.
“Pardon me, Ada!” Legolas called out, while he sailed down the lower half of the steps in a single leap.
Thranduil kept walking at his steady, even pace, but watched as his youngest son barreled all the way across the courtyard. The prince paused only to gather up an armful of snow from the covered ground and hastily pack it into a giant clump. Returning to a full sprint, he drew back his arm and flung the icy projectile--with impressive aim, Thranduil noted--in a straight shot toward the approaching rider.
The rider noticed in time, just barely, and swerved his horse to the right to narrowly avoid having a snowball smash squarely into his face. A bellowing cry rang through the night as the rider leapt off his horse and rushed toward his attacker. Thranduil heard Legolas scream as well, and watched the two figures charge at each other like two stags in rutting season.
In the next minute they were on the ground, only partially visible within the thick blanket of snow as they rolled and thrashed about, grappling until a victor emerged.
“Yield!” Gelir commanded, pulling his arm tighter around Legolas’s neck as he yanked him upright.
“I will not!” Legolas grunted, already red-faced as he strained against the merciless headlock.
“He yields,” Thranduil said sternly, finally coming up to the brothers. “Let him go.” He shook his head at Legolas’s groan. “You can seek a rematch tomorrow. Your mother is waiting.”
“We could have had enough time if this one had the decency not to arrive so late!” Legolas laughed, dusting the snow and dirt off his shoulders. “Or is that the custom in your province, oh Lord of Dant-en-Aras?”
“Oho, you shall see for yourself, mark my words, once you move into your own lands next spring, and you have to travel so many miles just to return home.” Gelir gave him a light shove. “Even then you would not have to cross over half the forest like I do.”
Thranduil cleared his throat, anticipating Legolas’s intent to shove him back and resume their shenanigans. At last Gelir remembered himself and greeted his King with a low bow, and then stepped forward to greet his father with an embrace. Thranduil held his son perhaps a little tighter, and a few seconds longer than usual--his now very busy, son-turned-lord whom he had not seen in almost a whole year.
“You need fresh tunics. Both of you.” Thranduil raised his eyebrow at Legolas, but could not help a smirk. “This will not do for dinner. Not when your Ammë has spent weeks working to make this evening perfect.”
As soon as they entered the palace, Thranduil’s three eldest sons were ready in the foyer to meet them. Loud voices filled the hall to its high ceilings as the brothers happily exchanged greetings, while the Elvenking walked up to the line of servants standing by to attend them. He sent two to collect the things he needed, then went to ask his sons to follow him into a nearby parlor.
“Is Ammë upstairs?” Gelir asked, tugging off his traveling clothes to slip on the formal garb that had been brought in for him.
“Yes, with Itarildë and Aranion,” said Mirion, lingering hesitantly by the doorway. “Shall I fetch them, Ada?”
“In a moment,” Thranduil replied. “First, I wanted a chance alone with you all to give you this.”
A butler stepped forward carrying a large coffer and opened its gilded lid.  Inside were five identical goblets, with bowls and stems made of clear crystal and a thick band of gold circling the rim. Thranduil extracted them from the box and one by one presented them to each of his sons.
“These are for you to toast with at tonight’s dinner, as we mark Legolas’s last Yule as a resident of this palace.” He smiled at their cries of admiration and appreciation for the gift. “Then they are for you to take back to your own houses.”
Arvellas held up the goblet to scrutinize the delicate engraving around the bowl, which sparkled with an inlay of tiny gemstones in green and gold. “I would say this technique looks very similar to something I have seen in Hadhodrond, but the Khazâd never work with crystal in their tableware.”
“It seems your cousin has stumbled upon yet another innovation,” Thranduil said. “And another craft he intends to keep a trade secret for our realm.”
“It is a good size,” Turhir grinned at his father. “Enough to hold twice the usual serving?”
“What better to sample the latest arrival of new vintage from Anórien with?”
“Hear, hear to that!” Legolas exclaimed, as they simultaneously raised their goblets to each other. Empty for the moment, but undoubtedly to later on serve as their instruments for draining the King’s wine cellar of half its stock in a single night--and Thranduil would not have it any other way.

Hello! I'm not sure if my question will meet the criteria you posted regarding asks/headcannons/fanfics (itz my first time hehe), but I gotta ask 😅: If Thranduil, his wife, and the 5 brothers had lived in the modern times, what would their lives be like (ex. jobs, lifestyles, modern interests, etc.)? Basically a modern au of sorts...? I understand if you do not answer my question if it really didn't meet the criteria, but if you do answer, thanks in advance!
MODERN AU: THE ROYAL FAMILY OF MIRKWOOD
The House of Thranduil
Modern AU set in the United States (this writer is American and doesn't want to embarrass herself speaking of other countries, lol)
Fair Warning: This entire family is ridiculously accomplished in this AU, but this is clearly fictional so just ride along the fantasy with me!
Apologies for the length and infodump style--my mind really ran off with this concept!
Tumblr media
Thranduil, The Patriarch
Tumblr media
Businessman/CEO and 4th generation landowner.
Land ownership currently includes 1 million acres of timberland around the West Coast.
Business holdings include logging, saw mills, wineries, and forest-product manufacturing companies that employs thousands of employees.
Attended Wharton School to study business but dropped out in his third year when his father passed; (reluctantly) took over the company at 21 years old to prevent it from being seized by his father's scheming partners.
Met and fell in love with Maereth, a classmate at Wharton, but she was already in a relationship with someone else.
Continued to pursue her over the course of 10 years until they finally wed right before he turned 30.
His family home is a 2,000-acre ranch in Northwest Oregon, but he travels constantly all over the country.
During the economic downturn, saved the business and his people's livelihood by selling off a third of the family's acreage.
Refuses opportunities to expand in favor of maintaining fair wages for his employees and ethical and environmentally sound practices.
Personal hobbies include breeding and racing horses, outdoor activities, wine-collecting, and travel.
Despite rubbing elbows with powerful, rich businessmen like himself, he despises that crowd and spends only as much time with them as necessary for business.
His closest friends are the folks in his small hometown and the employees who work alongside him.
Tumblr media
Maereth, The Matriarch
Tumblr media
Born to a lower-middle class family from Scranton, Pennsylvania. Father was a construction laborer and mother was a part-time receptionist.
The middle child and only daughter; has 3 brothers.
Only one in her family to attend and finish college.
Practically engaged to her boyfriend at the time she met Thranduil.
Despite her rejecting Thranduil's advances and professions of love because of her existing relationship, she felt attracted to him and could not bring herself to forget him. They maintained a friendship after Thranduil dropped out of Wharton and moved back West.
Once her relationship with her boyfriend ended, Thranduil resumed courting her, but she rejected his marriage proposal out of a desire to pursue a career on her own.
Started her own company and ran it for several years before selling it at a large profit. Used the money to pay off her family's loans and help her parents retire.
Was finally won over by Thranduil's persistence and obvious devotion, and agreed to marry him.
Gave birth to their five sons over the course of a single decade.
Raised her children as a stay-at-home mom until they all reached their teens.
Currently sits on the board of the family's corporation and serves as the Chief HR Officer.
Chairs the family's private foundation that gives millions to charitable causes annually.
Is a talented crafter, craftsman, and builder, more so than her husband and most of her sons (except for Mirion), with enough skill to complete simple remodels on her own. She is the ultimate DIYer who dives eagerly into manual labor, which is one of the things Thranduil admires most in her.
Is also a successful gardener, able to keep flourishing backyard gardens that bear flowers, fruits, and vegetables of different kinds.
Spends most of her free time on endless home improvement projects or traveling as needed to visit her sons.
Tumblr media
Mirion, eldest son - The Heir
Tumblr media
The dutiful son who accepted his role as the eventual heir to the company. Started shadowing his father as a teen.
Married to his high school sweetheart, with whom he has two children (so far the only grandchildren of Thranduil and Maereth).
Lettered in 3 high school sports: baseball, football, and track, but discontinued sports in college to focus on academics.
Holds a degree in materials engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
Upon marrying, settled his family at a ranch house in Oregon to stay close to his parents and majority of their holdings.
Started his own construction company that eventually became a part of the family conglomerate.
Was a stay-at-home dad for several years to allow his physician wife to return to her small town practice.
Attends many high-profile social engagements on behalf of his parents.
The ultimate dad: very involved in his kids' lives and is beloved by their friends; their home is a popular hangout for the neighborhood kids.
Constantly hit on by single moms and dads; unfortunately for them, he is singularly obsessed with his wife.
Had a very brief stint as a commercial model during his college years, and agents often suggest he return to it--but he has zero interest.
Very down-to-earth and a homebody outside of work. Leans towards introversion.
Favorite past times: DIY projects around his house, fixing up old cars, riding his horses, playing with his dogs, and having neighbors over for big backyard BBQs.
The closest thing the family has to a cowboy. The only one of his brothers to reside in a rural area and the only one besides their parents to own and keep horses.
Tumblr media
Turhir, second-born son - The Soldier
Tumblr media
Knew early on that he wanted to travel the world and serve his country as a soldier in the armed forces.
Enlisted in the US Navy straight out high school and became a SEAL.
Joined DEVGRU (Seal Team Six) where he became the officer of an assault squadron.
Has been in back-to-back tours of duty since his first deployment at age 19.
Has a running count of 10 combat tours, which would have been more if not for an entire year sidelined while he recovered from a serious spine injury that almost left him paralyzed.
Is quietly the most decorated Navy SEAL in history, with commendations that include two Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars, five Purple Hearts, the Navy Cross, and the highest honor: the Medal of Honor.
The perpetual nomad/couch surfer and the only brother not to own his own residence.
Was cheated on by his girlfriend while he was away on deployment. Never recovered from the heartbreak and has had no serious relationships since.
Favorite past times: Training for triathlons (running, swimming and biking), spending time with his brothers, reading novels.
Has competed in the Ironman World Championship and Badwater Ultramarathon.
Consumes paperback novels like water; buys them from used book stores and then donates to libraries afterward.
Frequently does hands-on volunteer work for charities like Habitat for Humanity and local food banks.
Suffers from PTSD and depression, which he manages with medication and regular therapy.
Absolutely detests social media and refuses to engage in any of it.
Avoids press attention like a plague. Does not attend big social functions with his family unless begged to by his mother.
Stays so far away from the limelight, the press/media sometimes forgets he is part of Thranduil's famous family.
Tumblr media
Arvellas, middle-born son - The Genius
Tumblr media
A bonafide genius with an IQ of 165, tested when he was only 12 years old; was subsequently accepted into Mensa.
Although he was a clearly gifted child, his mother declined to accelerate his education or place him in a different school from his brothers. She believed it was more important for him to enjoy as normal a childhood as possible.
Started college at Stanford University at the fairly typical age of 17, but completed his premed degree within two years and was a Doctor of Medicine by 26.
Not a practicing physician since he has instead devoted himself to a career in medical research, specifically in developing targeted treatments for aggressive cancers.
In addition to his MD, he holds graduate degrees in biochemistry and biophysics.
Has more trophies and accolades than all his brothers combined, all of them for intellectual achievements in various fields.
Holds over a dozen patents for different scientific devices, processes, and formulas.
A polyglot who speaks 8 foreign languages conversationally, including Spanish, Mandarin, German, Italian, French, Arabic, Hindi, and Japanese. Once he has gained fluency in one language, he immediately starts studying another.
Also speaks at least a couple of constructed languages from sci-fi/fantasy worlds.
On a dare from his younger brothers, took and aced the LSATs and was accepted to several Ivy League law schools, though he never attended.
Stays in athletic shape through biking, swimming, and playing tennis.
Reads (and collects) comics and graphic novels as often as he reads scientific journals.
Goes to at least one comic con a year as his schedule allows.
Wears a coat and tie even more frequently than his father does.
Has been with the same romantic partner for the last 5 years, but has shown no signs of getting married.
Tumblr media
Gelir, fourth-born son - The Adventurer
Tumblr media
A wildlife biologist and rehabilitation specialist with degrees in zoology and veterinary medicine.
Specialty is working with and rehabilitating wild mammals. His favorite animal is the wolverine, which was the first truly wild creature he had rescued and nursed back to health early in his career.
Prefers to do contract work with non-profit organizations, which enables him to continue travelling due to a a less-restrictive schedule.
Also does a lot of short-lived gig work on the side that allows him to engage in his hobbies while earning. Examples are working as a safari guide, a park ranger, or climbing instructor.
An avid (almost obsessive) outdoor adventurer who avoids spending time in cities as much as possible, and likes to explore new remote locations through camping and hiking.
A skilled climber with experience in nearly all types, including free soloing, mountaineering, and ice climbing.
A licensed scuba diver and skilled surfer and rafter. Swims like a fish.
Licensed to pilot private planes, drive motorcycles, and drive boats.
Most widely traveled member of his family, having been to every continent in the world, including Antarctica.
Only one in his family who can speak an African language (Swahili), which he likes to crow to Arvellas about.
Has made a conscious decision to keep/owns no pets, due to his frequent travels making him unable to properly care for one.
The eternal bachelor whose interest rarely goes beyond a few dates; has never been in a serious relationship and understands his restless wandering would make him a terrible boyfriend.
Was previously reluctant to put himself and his work in front of a camera, but realized (through his brother Legolas) that he can make a good amount of money by creating and posting videos on social media--money that would fund his travels and exploits.
Has been approached by major producers to host his own adventure show series, but prefers to work with independent filmmakers on legitimate documentaries.
Tumblr media
Legolas, youngest son - The Celebrity
Tumblr media
Professional footballer. Star striker of the US Men's National Soccer Team and the Seattle Sounders FC.
Career achievements include an Olympic bronze medal, an MLS (Major League Soccer) Cup, and a FIFA World Cup (a US first!).
The most independently wealthy of all the brothers due to multi- million dollar endorsements that include Adidas and Pepsi.
Has his own staff that includes a personal assistant, a publicist/social media manager, a private chef, and very hardworking sports agent.
A social media star with a following of 50 million in Instagram and still climbing, making him by far the most famous one in his family.
Is occasionally able to convince Gelir to do adventure/extreme sports-related videos with him, which always go viral. While Legolas does it for the fun and bonding experience, Gelir agrees to do it mostly for the money. On rarer occasions, he is able to convince Mirion to participate as well, when it has a fundraising aspect.
Diagnosed with both dyslexia and ADHD, which he manages with medication.
Aside from playing soccer and other traditional team sports, his hobbies include extreme/adventure sports such as skiing, snowboarding, windsurfing, mountain biking, skydiving, and paragliding.
Also a talented sketch and comic artist who occasionally shares his works online.
His favorite charitable activity is visiting children's hospitals, (including making sizeable donations), and has been requested several times by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Constantly being romantically linked to celebrities, less than half of which are actually true.
Receives a lot of attention from women and is frequently pursued by them. In all the "noise" on top of being in the public eye, he finds it challenging to find partners to genuinely fall in love with.
Tends to struggle with periods of loneliness, during which he seeks refuge in his family.

SHEJEKSUEIRU I’m in love with the 5 brothers head-canons! And i was wondering how affectionate do you think each one is, and if any favor like one of his siblings!
<3
Ahhh dear @quickslvxr I am excited by your excitement, and so appreciative of your interest, so I'm gonna ride the roll I'm currently on and answer this quickly. <3
The Affection Between Legolas and His Brothers
Brothers. They could be violently wrestling each other one second and then back to drinking and laughing together in the next. As "sophisticated" and "cultured" as these half-Noldor, half-Sindar Elven princes are, they are definitely... interesting and entertaining when together as a crew.
One thing is for certain and remained the unshakable truth across many centuries: they had deep love for each other, and remained fiercely loyal to their brotherly bonds, to their last breaths. (*small cry*)
For fun, here are the brothers ranked, from the least demonstratively affectionate, to the MOST affectionate.
Tumblr media
Rank #5: TURHIR
The "tough guy" of the family. When it comes to temperament, he takes the most after their father, King Thranduil. He is more likely to punch various parts of his brothers' bodies as a sign of affection than to give them a hug. But he is also the most protective of his family, and is prepared to go to war over even the smallest slights committed against his brothers. He will commit violent (even criminal) acts for his loved ones without batting an eyelash or breaking a sweat.
He is closest to Mirion, whom Turhir respects and admires the most in the world, and to Arvellas, whose gentle and pacifist nature causes Turhir to be extra protective of him.
Rank #4: GELIR
Gelir just has weird, random ways of showing his affection. He is definitely not one to express it in words, but even his actions tend to be confusing and questionable. He enjoys teasing, ribbing, and cracking jokes instead of being upfront with his love for his brothers; humor is his love language. However, he is the one to be counted on to always be there, to always have their backs, no matter the challenge or danger. Even when he thinks his brother is wrong, or being "an idiot", he will support them, keep them safe, and just give them a hard time about it along the way (and for years after).
He is merely two decades older than Legolas, which is nothing in Elf years, so they are closest to each other and were very much partners-in-crime in their younger years.
Rank #3: LEGOLAS
The "baby" of the family carries the burden of being the most closely watched and the recipient of the most well-intentioned advice, wanted or not. However, Legolas has tremendous love and admiration for his elder brothers, and views them all as his idols. He is openly affectionate with them, and refuses to be dissuaded even by the prickly attitudes of Turhir and Gelir. He enjoys spending time with them more than anyone else in the world, and thus learns a great deal from them--resulting in him being equipped with countless abilities.
Legolas is closest to Gelir due to their closeness in age and shared interests. He seems to understand Gelir's odd quirks and tolerate his wild manners better than anyone else in the family.
Rank #2: ARVELLAS
Arvellas is the middle child, and is referred to by his parents as the heart of the brotherhood. He is calm and wise and compassionate and caring--basically so darn nice. However, he is also extremely busy with the many tasks and responsibilities he has taken upon himself, because his life goal is to serve his family and kingdom with his many talents. He would not hesitate to tell his brothers how much he loves them, and although he might not always be immediately available to them (he is usually the one to miss out on random adventures, since his work makes him a bit of a recluse and bound to routines and schedules), he is recognized as the best person to come to for sound advice, even by his parents.
He is not noticeably closest to anyone, and spends time with all his brothers almost equally.
Rank #1: MIRION
Mirion is the hugger of the family and is both the most verbally and physically affectionate. He has very strong paternal instincts, and he cares for his brothers as though they were his own sons. He travels frequently and has many duties as Crown Prince that require his daily attention, but he makes it a point to regularly spend time with each of his brothers individually, imparting as much knowledge and training to them as he can, as their father did with him. He is the "Prince of Princes", an official title and rank that gives him command and responsibility over his brothers; he is literally sworn to protect them and ensure their well-being. He is usually the one who arranges activities and trips for them to come together as a group. Mirion is the top choice of all the princes to turn to for a sympathetic ear.
He is not necessarily closer to any brother over the other, but he spends more time with Turhir and Arvellas because of the nature of their shared work--military duties with Turhir, and diplomatic duties with Arvellas.

Sam Roland Heughan was born on 30 April 1980 in the historic county of Dumfries and Galloway. His parents had been part of a hippie community in London called Gandalf's Garden which was heavily influenced by the works of J. R. R. Tolkien inspiring them to name Heughan and his older brother after characters from The Lord of the Rings. Source: Wikipedia article on Sam Heughan
IMHO, this is reason enough to regularly include Sam Heughan on my Tolkien-centric blog. What a shame the film producers missed out on casting an actor who is not only physically perfect for the role, but would have been personally invested due to his connection to Tolkien! He was named after Samwise Gamgee, while his brother is named Cirdan.
I also found an article that claims (not sure how true it is) that Sam auditioned for "an elf role" that was later given to Liv Tyler... so it's possible he could have been Glorfindel!!
LOOK HOW HANDSOME. He would have made an excellent Glorfindel, or Celeborn, or Finrod, or any Silm elf!!
It's all good though; I'll take him to cast in one of my own OC roles.

Girl!
*slams hands on table*
Hear me out:
Cocoa is probably a crop that exists in Middle-Earth despite this place being created based on Eurasia, because we know corn exists (Lembas bread), and chocolate is a candy that was invented thanks to a method of hydraulic press that squeezes the cocoa butter out of roasted cocoa almonds, allowing the remaining cocoa to be powdered and remixed with the butter to make chocolate, and considering how elves, orcs, dwarves and many other folks had methods of pressing grains, and how Middle-Earth has areas close to deserts which would allow the growth of cocoa...
Does that mean chocolates exist on Middle-Earth, which means Thranduil could have eaten chocolate! Which begs the question:
Did he ever try chocolate? If yes, did he like it? If no, would he have liked it if he did? I ask cuz chocolates are great to eat with wine!
Thank for making a case for chocolate existing in Middle-earth! I agree that it is one of those "exotic" delicacies that would have been discovered (the cocoa bean) and created by one of the Middle-earth races. Personally, I see it as something being innovated by the race of Men, likely the Dunedain or perhaps even Numenor.
Under the rule of Thranduil, the Woodland Realm had a lively trade with the kingdoms of Men in the first millennium of the Third Age, so they absolutely would have imported chocolate (among many other goods), and eventually even developed their own versions of it. In the SotWK AU, the Woodland elves' love for food rivals that of hobbits and dwarves. (See my HC post about Food in the Woodland Realm)
Would Thanduil have liked chocolate, and the other "innovative" sweets you mentioned in your two other Asks? (here comes the SotWK AU opinion:)
Thranduil doesn't have much of a sweet tooth. He prefers savory flavors, and this matches his preference for dry wine over sweet wine.
Chocolate: Thranduil does enjoy it, but only to an extent. He usually only eats it when it is served as part of the dessert course during special occasions. However, chocolates are frequently used as special gifts from the royal family to their friends, including their subjects.
Marshmallow: Likely another invention from Men, I see marshmallows as an ingredient added to cakes, pastries, drinks, and other sweet foods. I don't see it as something Elves would eat on its own, since they consider it much too sweet anyway (like all forms of candy).
Cotton candy/candy floss: I imagine this was something devised by the Hobbits of the Shire, which means the Woodland Realm likely did not encounter it until the latter part of the Third Age. Perhaps even it was Bilbo himself who introduced it to the Elvenking during one of his visits to the Shire! Thranduil's verdict? A rather vile confection, but very amusing!
Bonus SotWK HC: So who did like candy in Thranduil's family? Prince Turhir Thranduilion was well-known for having an adventurous palette; he was willing to eat anything (apart from the obvious "don't eat" animals, of course), and he found enjoyment even in extreme flavors and textures, including sugary treats that most Elves found too sweet. (It's also fun imagining a behemoth, stern-faced elf-lord eating mini marshmallows and tufts of pink candy floss, hanging out with kids.)

Thank you for the Ask, my friend, and for providing all this wonderful food history information!

Hehe I'm curious are any of the 5 brothers musicians? What instruments do they play? Also do any of them paint or do handicrafts?
Eeeee! More questions about the Princes! *hugs Anon fiercely* 🥰 (Thank you thank you!)
Musical and Artistic Skills of the Thranduilion Princes
Answers under the Fancast image:
Tumblr media
(Thranduilion Fancast L-R: Mirion, Turhir, Arvellas, Gelir, Legolas)
All five of the brothers can sing beautifully because communal singing is something that Woodland Elves love to do. The princes grew up within that culture, and throughout their lives they developed skills within the extent of their talents and interests.
MUSICAL SKILLS
MIRION: His vocal range isn't wide, (his voice is quite deep, much like Thranduil's), but when he sings, the quality of his voice makes people fall silent to listen. He is especially good with lullabies that soothe children and put babies to sleep. He plays the violin with great skill, but usually does so when alone as a way to relax.
TURHIR: The least musically inclined in his family, but would willingly sing for community celebrations. Much prefers to listen to music rather than create or play it, and actually has a discerning ear.
ARVELLAS: Doesn't sing very often (usually just in community events), but he is a masterful harpist, which he does recreationally or upon the request of his family.
GELIR: A magnificent singer, and he's not afraid to show it off. He sings to animals as well as people, and this is one of the ways he communicates with them. He is also extremely skilled at making animal sounds, so much that most elves cannot tell the difference. He plays various types of flutes, and always carries one with him when he travels, which he uses to entertain himself and others. He can also play the lute, but not as frequently since it's an extra item he does not want to carry on his frequent travels.
LEGOLAS: The musical "jack of all trades" in his family. He can sing very well, and dabbles in virtually all existing instruments he has encountered. He has a knack for just picking things up, and creating songs at random (like a Hobbit!). He and Gelir are the "performers" of the family.
Tumblr media
When it comes to arts and crafts, the princes all each have extraordinary natural skill for it, because they descend from the House of Finwe on their mother Maereth's side. They all have different passions and interests, but are all very skilled with their hands. (*wink-wink* Had to.)
ARTISTIC/CRAFTING SKILLS
MIRION: He is a blacksmith and metallurgist; next to his family, this is his greatest passion, and would be his full-time profession if he did not have Crown Prince duties. He specializes in designing and crafting armor and weaponry, renowned for their beauty, strength, and unique ("magical") properties. Many of his designs are produced for and used by the soldiers of the realm. His favorite masterpiece is the Elvenking's famous sword, which he gifted to his father early in the Third Age.
TURHIR: His dedication to combat and warfare doesn't give him as much time to devote to the arts, but recreationally, he is a builder and craftsman. He enjoys and is skilled at constructing and making things, usually practical objects such as houses and large furniture. He especially likes woodworking and carpentry, and is a member of the very exclusive guild of woodcutters (felling trees in the Woodland Realm is highly restricted).
ARVELLAS: Where to start with this scholar-genius, Fëanor reborn? He writes in virtually every script existing in Middle-earth, including his own system that he devised for use by his family. He draws, paints, and sculpts in different styles, all with master-level proficiency. He is an inventor, an architect, and an engineer, and he spearheaded the design and construction of the underground halls his family moved into late in the Third Age.
GELIR: He takes the least interest in creating art (much like his father), but he has taken the time to learn to craft things he finds useful for himself. He is a master fletcher and ropemaker, able to make both items either with great speed or great intricacy. He is also skilled at putting together makeshift items as needed during travels, such shelters and camping implements.
LEGOLAS: Has the greatest skill working with paper, fiber, textiles, and ceramics/clay. Creative-minded with very nimble and dexterous fingers, he likes to whittle objects out of leftover/discarded wood, such as small toys. He is known for making elaborate artwork and décor from folded paper and leaves (Elvish origami). He is both an experienced basket-weaver and potter. He is also a talented painter, though he tends to paint more abstract pieces that is less appreciated by conventional tastes. His wide range of skills allowed him to transition to being a shipwright at the end of the Fourth Age.

Turhir has big protective brother energy that truly needs to be seen in action
Oooh, I am always cautious about discussing Turhir, because his fate in the latter part of the Third Age is a story I'm still trying very hard not to spoil. I had to run over to my headcanon post, "SotWK OC Spotlight: Prince Turhir Thranduilion" to make sure I don't say anything I haven't already revealed. But sure enough, I already mentioned it:
Tumblr media
Although the most powerful of the Thranduilions, Turhir had the indescribably excruciating experience of having two of his beloved brothers die in his arms after being unable to rescue them. It reaaaaaaally fucked him up, as you can imagine. I cannot say what happens after that, but let's just say it was fortunate that he was not around when his mother also was killed, because THAT would have ended him for sure.
Anywayyyyyyyy.... back to the "happier times"!
While Mirion became the "official" Protector of the realm as the leader of the armies, Turhir was its greatest warrior. (We're not counting Thranduil here.) The main difference is that Mirion has a gentler, more pacifist nature, while Turhir takes after his father--he will not shy from violence, bloodshed, or righteous anger if it is in the defense of his loved ones. You can see a glimpse of that aspect of his personality in my fic, "A Stab to the Heart".
There would be many, many instances of Turhir shielding his brothers from the dangers and evils of Sauron, and yes--I'm eager to write those in fics eventually!
Thank you again, Anon! ;) It's so nice chatting with you about this!
Insert gratuitous fancast of Sam Heughan as Turhir Thranduilion:

Hi there! I've been reading this blog for a while, and its amazing. Your Thranduillion OCs live in my head rent-free. If I could ask about something, what exactly happened to the other Thranduillion? Mirion dies in battle, but what about the other princes? And does Gelir ever reappear after being banished? Thanks for all your writing :) –Bird
Hello Bird!
I am soooo sorry this got buried in my Asks, but excuses aside, this is inexcusably late! I want to say thank you so much for your kind compliments and I am so happy the Thranduilions have found a place in your head! <3
As for your question re: the BIG ONE--The Fates of the Thranduilions!
We know what happens to Legolas. The SotWK AU does not deviate from his War of the Ring participation and Fourth Age ending at all.
Mirion and Arvellas (sadly, tragically, but heroically) are killed in separate battles centuries before the events of The Hobbit.
Turhir leaves Mirkwood in TA 2601, soon after the death of Arvellas. His whereabouts and status (alive or dead??) become unknown to the rest of his family for centuries. Can't give more detail than that for the moment.
Queen Maereth is killed in Gundabad in TA 2793 during the War of the Dwarves and Orcs.
Gelir is banished and leaves Mirkwood in TA 2800. But unlike Turhir, Thranduil and Legolas know he is alive because they occasionally receive news of sightings of him throughout Middle-earth. Gelir travels widely fighting Sauron's evils, trying to avenge his family, very similar to the way Elladan and Elrohir crusade against orcs with the Rangers. In fact, Gelir joins up with the Dunedain several times and even meets young Estel in Rivendell!
Now for the bigger spoiler!
By the time the War of the Ring ends, Gelir AND Turhir DO reappear and return to Mirkwood to reunite with Thranduil and Legolas! They become a happy (although still incomplete) family once more by the dawn of the Fourth Age and the renewed kingdom of Eryn Lasgalen.
Again, I'm going to avoid going into more detail than that for now, because I have to save some stuff for the actual fics I'm writing. XD
But this is such a lovely Ask, and again, thank you for the interest you give to my beloved OC Princes! <3

Hi! I just read your headcanon post on Prince Turhir and I just wanted to say A) Thank you SO much for giving us some goodies about this super cool character!
And B) [Potential? Spoiler Alert]
Um… did I see the plural form of the word DEATH in that post in reference to two of his brothers?! I feel like my heart is broken and I don’t even know them yet!!!! If possible, can you PLEASE speak to this a bit?! I’m afraid I need some answers!!! (And also if you could potentially give the years when it happens since I’m writing smth that kindaa involves the princes, I would GREATLY appreciate it while sobbing in a corner xD) Thanks so much!
-Mithril Anon
Hi Mithril! I appreciate you and this message so very much! <3
Full disclosure, I still have your other ask regarding the Lindir x OC fic idea simmering in my inbox. I want you to know it's such a lovely message and request that I just need a little more time to respond to. <3 I beg your patience while I deal with my backlog!
I would be honored if any of my Thranduilions can be included in any of your writings, or even just inspire them! I am always happy to learn they are being appreciated and accepted as Tolkien characters in their own right. Thank you thank you thank you!
Now for some bullet points addressing your question:
Which of the Thranduilions die in the SotWK AU?
Tumblr media
SotWK Fancast: Sam Heughan as Prince Turhir Thranduilion
I have made references to the fates of Thranduil's sons in other headcanon posts, but have never been wholly specific on the details.
Truthfully, I don't mind giving spoilers about the deaths, since those are pretty set in stone. (Sorry!) However, I prefer to stay vague about the fates of the sons that live, since those futures are still fluid.
Crown Prince Mirion is the first prince to die. He was killed in direct combat against the Necromancer during a great siege upon Dol Guldur in Third Age 2063. It is largely thanks to him that the Necromancer was forced to retreat from Dol Guldur, resulting in the 400 years of "Watchful Peace". (Canon states it was because Gandalf came to investigate and Sauron got scared but...how boring and dismissive of the Greenwood Elves! This headcanon tweaks and amends that! XD)
Prince Arvellas perished next in Third Age 2589. He was killed by the great Cold-drake that attacked the halls of the Dwarf King Dain I during the War of the Dwarves and Dragons. Arvellas's sacrifice in defense of the Dwarves of the Grey Mountain is the primary reason why Thranduil reneged on aiding the Dwarves of Erebor against Smaug's attack. At that point, with only two sons (Gelir and Legolas) left, the family had already lost too much.
What happened to Turhir, then? I can guarantee only this for now: Turhir doesn't die. But after watching both his brothers die, he began to wish for death. He always took his job as protector of the family very seriously, and he became overwhelmed with grief and self-loathing at this failure to save Mirion and Arvellas as (he believed) he should have. As Sauron increases his power in the Third Age, the darkness that grows within Turhir (which his parents soon suspect was planned by The Enemy) eventually makes him more a liability than an asset... and that's all I will reveal about his future for now!
It's always bittersweet for me to discuss the tragic fates of Thranduil's family. On one hand, it's heartbreaking how much suffering is heaped on such kind souls! But on the other hand, it shows how heroic they all were, and how much Thranduil sacrificed and bore just to defend his kingdom (and really, all of Middle-earth).
I cherish the idea that the Greenwood Elves were never idle bystanders in the endless war against Darkness (*ahem, Tauriel, ahem*), and in fact contributed a LOT to the cause of protecting Good.
Thank you again for your question, and I hope this gives you plenty of inspiration for your writings!
Please don't be TOO sad--there are still plenty of good years and memories in Thranduil's family history to balance out the tragedies. I hope to write more of those stories.

What are some cool facts or events that Turhir has?
Did someone finally ask about Turhir (aka the Most Forgotten Prince of Greenwood)???
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for this question, Cheryl!!! I appreciate any interest in any of my writings, any of my OCs, but most especially regarding the least inquired-about of the group!
In response to your request, I made a whole separate post about Prince Turhir Thranduilion, making him the first of my OC Thranduilions to really get a "Spotlight On" headcanon post. I hope this satisfies your curiosity for him, and encourages more interest from other Readers!
I personally feel Turir is a fascinating character, probably even the most complex of Thranduil's sons, but the onus is really on me to actually write more stuff about him. Hopefully even get a fic out, eventually.
Thank you so much again for your Ask! <3

Which hogwarts house would each of the 5 brothers + thranduil and his wife be in?
Hello Anon! I gotta be honest, I lost interest in the Harry Potter fandom many years ago, before the 7th book even came out, and was never really pulled back in. However, I did dabble very briefly in HP fanfiction back in the day, so I do recall basic knowledge of the Hogwarts Houses. :) Here is my best attempt at sorting Thranduil's family:
Gryffindor: Thranduil, Turhir, Gelir
Hufflepuff: Mirion, Legolas
Ravenclaw: Elvenqueen Maereth, Arvellas
BONUS: Slytherin: Oropher
Thank you for this interesting Ask! <3

go listen to "Elvenlegions" by Elvenking
Oh wow--this definitely brought me back to my Disturbed and Breaking Benjamin "on constant loop" days! Thank you so much for the introduction to a new band with such a cool name!
I don't think this music/song would be quite to Thranduil's taste, but I can totally see my OC Elven Prince Turhir jamming to it (in his head??) while plowing his way through an orc army.
That dude kicks ass literally and figuratively.
