Hi Naneth! Do you know and/or play D&D? So...I've recently started playing it and got addicted to the game (surprisingly for someone who's always been a bookworm than a gamer hehe), and now I can't help but be curious what would the Thranduillions (maybe bonus Thranduil and his wife?) be like as D&D characters (or what kind of characters would they create and play as during D&D sessions)? Ooooh, now I wonder what a Thranduillion D&D session would look like XD!
Omg it's amazing that you asked me this question, because literally just this morning I was chatting with my sister about her starting to play tabletop D&D with her old college buddies! I said to her, "Man I'm jealous and I wish I could join in, but I would just be so lost and confused and annoying because I'll need everything explained to me multiple times." XD My sister is also trying to get me to play BG3, and although it's really, really tempting, I'm afraid even venturing into that would take up what little free time I have left!
Anyway, going into your question that I LOVE so much, about what the Thranduilions would be like if they had a D&D session. Using my limited knowledge of the actual gameplay, it would go something like this:
The Royal House of Greenwood Plays Dungeons & Dragons
Characters Chosen
Everyone in the family prefers to play Elves but sometimes may choose a Half-Elf, Human, Dwarf, or Halfling. Legolas may dare to try controversial classes (i.e. dragonborn, half-orc), but only when their parents aren't playing.
Mirion: Barbarian. Values Strength.
Turhir: Paladin. Values Constitution.
Arvellas: Wizard. Values Wisdom.
Gelir: Ranger. Values Dexterity.
Legolas: Druid. Values Wisdom.
Thranduil: Rogue. Values Dexterity.
Maereth: Bard. Values Charisma.
Tumblr media
How They Would Play
The family likes to run the campaign as a group that quests together, rather than individuals, so they work together as a team.
Arvellas is the Dungeon Master mostly because he wrote the guide books and has by far the most organized brain among the brothers. He's also the calmest, most patient, and can keep his brothers in line in case things descend into chaos.
Legolas was the ringleader who initiated the idea to start/play this game in the first place. He begged and helped Arvellas to create the game books, with Arvellas wrangling Legolas's wild enthusiasm and all-over-the-place ideas into brilliant manuals. Legolas also crafted the dice, miniatures, and game boards himself, and he always has the most elaborately detailed character sheets.
Mirion is not much for this sort of game but is absolutely happy to humor Legolas and spend time with his family. Barely knows what is going on and essentially just follows what Legolas tells him he "has" to do. His character is often first to get injured or in trouble, but he laughs it off. Is eating an unholy amount of snacks the entire time.
Turhir is the tactical genius who thinks of creative ways to solve problems and defeat opponents. Mostly does his thing to keep the quest going and everyone alive, but also gives advice regarding combat tactics when asked. Is quietly the MVP of the campaign.
Gelir is just really annoyed by the concept of dice controlling his fate and blames lousy dice rolls a lot. Protests and argues against the "logic" of difficulty checks. Heckles any of his brothers who "mess up" (in his opinion). Chooses courses of action based on what's flashiest instead of what's wise. (He's much more strategic in real life, but this is a GAME. Plus he likes to mess with Legolas.)
Thranduil picks up on the game super quickly despite having the least experience. Frequently leaves the table to attend to crown business (or grab more wine). Assigns Turhir to play for him in his absence because they have the same mindset. Drinks a crazy amount of wine during the course of the game (it helps him relax) but still does not appear drunk, nor is his gameplay affected.
Maereth never gets into trouble (in the game) because literally everyone is half-focused on protecting her. Eventually she gently removes herself from the game so they can play for real without having to consider her. Helped Legolas make the dice, miniatures, and game boards.
I hope you (and all D&D/BG3 readers) enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed writing it! Thank you for this very fun Ask! <3

Conrad Leto Headcanons
Tumblr media
If you haven't watched the BC movie then GO WATCH IT ITS SO GOOD, good animation, best fight scenes and smoking hot wizard kings 😳 Available on Netflix worldwide 🙌
Warning: None
Some general & romance headcanons <3
• You two started as friends in the White Serpents (Conrad's magic knight squad) then fell in love and later on you two end up marrying and he became WK
• He didn't care that you were a commoner and he was a noble. Knowing that a lot of people, including his family wouldn't approve his relationship with you, he didn't care he loved you
• Your squad mates were happy for you when you two became public
• Conrad is really gentle when two are alone, he'll show you a side of him that no one knows
• Conrad is very protective. He will always keep you close when you two are at parties or public events
• After he became WK, he got busier than ever before yet he always made time for you like going on little dates or coming home early, taking a bath together *eyebrows eyebrows
• Conrad is not the jealous type but he doesn't like it when you talk too much with other guys from your squad or when a man approaches you. Like Conrad would scare the guy off just with his intimidating gaze
• His kisses are deep, long and passionate
• He is really warm when you two cuddle because of his big chest and muscles it's like you never wanna let him go
• Sometimes Conrad makes fun of you for being shorter than the average girl while he is WAY taller than you
• What he loves about you is your kindness and understanding
• Something that Conrad enjoys is drinking wine with you while watching the sunset

Mirkwood Terrain Inspo
For the wonderful @sotwk, thank you for your suggestions 💚
Again, I couldn't find photos from mostly New Zealand, but I am quite happy with the result! This is a much older, and mature forest, with a hint of darkness it didn't have before.
Tumblr media
From Top to Bottom, Left to Right
Twisted trunks by Craig Strahorn
Forest Reflection by Chloé Lam
River to Lake Town by Jeff Hitchcock
Mysterious Glen by Donald Gionnatti
Dried Stream by Mike Blank
Kahikatea Trees by Geoff McKay
Mossy branches by Matthew Smith
I wanna add, for headcanon purposes, that the Beech trees in Rotoroa are covered in black sooty mold that covers even the ferns. It helps the ecosystem (read about it, it's pretty cool!), but it looks a little scary and makes everything smell like vinegar.

Hi Mirra!
Have you written any headcanon, metas, discussions, or fics about your concept of the "Faithful Haradrim"? If so, could you please tell me where to find them? If you haven't yet, would you mind sharing some info of your headcanons (anything at all) about their history and culture?
I'm a big fan of your Harad artwork and concepts (including the Blue Wizards), and it's all clearly founded on a rich, complex world you've created for them in your head. I would definitely love to learn more! :) I do also plan on including more about the Haradrim culture and history in my upcoming fanfics, so I would love to hear an expert's ideas on them.
Thank you for sharing your work with us!
@sotwk Was very happy to discover your message in my ask box!
Thank you for your interest and willingness to include more Haradrim content into your writing, but I'm afraid you might find my views rather... boring 😆
I also must apologise in advance if any of my phrases may not seem polite enough or turn out to be grammatically incorrect - English is not my first language.
Disclaimer! What is written below represents my personal view! It is in no way intended to hurt or discredit anyone’s head canons, views and ideas!
My Chinese calligraphy teacher once told me: "Do you want to assume or to learn? Decide on the approach before you make theories about anything."
And I follow the strategy of "to learn" before I "assume". So, first and foremost, I'm still in search of bits of information about the peoples who inhabited Harad and Rhun (South and East) of Middle-earth.
My goal is not so much to create head cannons as to draw the audience's attention to the canon and the Professor's own vision. Accordingly, in working through his letters, essays, and volumes of the History of Middle-earth, I am trying to draw parallels that someone as educated as Professor Tolkien might have drawn.
I also categorically disagree with the images created in the movies, where the conventional evil is more caricatured than frightening, and the motives and history of the conflict are not shown at all (Faramir’s saying about Haradrim’s fate is at least included, which is great, even if it wasn’t his in books). When my best friend dragged me into the Silmarillion story couple of years ago, I was amazed at how distorted the perception of these regions was in adaptations.
So, thinking about the existence and struggles of Faithful Haradrim, I rely on the history of the region and possible historical patterns. Such a vast region simply cannot have a common culture. It is the idea that can unite them. But, as in our reality, cultural features, symbolism and colours may differ. For example, we know that those who came with Sauron's army, performed under red flags with snakes. Does that mean that the entire vast region walked exclusively in the same colours? It seems unlikely to me.
As for the Blue Wizards, blue in general is a colour very 'inherent' to many cultures in the Global South. I suppose that's why the Professor dressed Alatar and Pallando in those colours. And accordingly, in my opinion, Faithful Haradrim could use these colours in their robes and on their banners, but not necessarily. It is not the colour that reflects the inner essence of a person.
Of course, when thinking about this or that image, I think about where exactly these people live, what the level of metallurgy development is present in different Ages, whether there is a sea or mountains nearby - all this affects how their armour\architecture\symbolism could have developed. In general, I draw parallels with real anthropology and the history of the development of civilisations. Books about the regional patterns, military and weapon history etc are of big help here too.
Sometimes, of course, I make things up. For example, when I first read the lines about the Blue Wizards not returning to Valinor, I didn't take it in a negative light. After all, they could have stayed in Middle-earth willingly, having become attached and imbued with the problems of the region, of the people. After all, Alatar and Curumo were the only ones who were not afraid to volunteer to fight Sauron.
I also like the later version, in which the Blue Wizards arrive in the Second Age. It makes more "sense" given the nightmare that the Númenorians had wrought in the region. But even among them, I'm sure there were some people who sympathised and helped the local population. I don't believe in black and white in principle. But I do believe in post-truth.
So, in essence, I'm a boring canonist who treats the author's writings and views with great respect. And the myth of the Haradrim and Easterlings being bad guys by all accounts is almost as well-established as the supposed lack of religion, holy Dunedain and cute glowing elves. Which is, in my opinion, in no way consistent with Tolkien's own philosophy and stance.
Perhaps what I came up with from scratch was a sign, a Faithful Haradrim symbol, that those could use to identify each other. People need symbols, faith and ideas. Especially in such trying times. That's the way we are.
Tumblr media
Oh, I'm afraid if I go on, it'll be a whole essay. So I think I'll stop here. Thanks again for your question and your interest! I'm sorry if I disappointed you, haha.  Good luck with your writing - I'm so happy there're people out there, who're genuinely interested in the region! ❤
P.S. If everything goes well, I plan to release a zine about Harad at the end of the year. With quotes and the obligatory notes of personal theories not to confuse the reader.

I am absolutely smitten with the way you write fics and headcanons about Éomer, Théodred, all the Rohirrim, and everything Rohan-related, and I just came here to put on official record that you are THE top-tier Rohan Specialist in my book.
Please please please keep doing what you do, and please tag me in all the fics. Please don't keep your genius hidden in your Google Docs and keep sharing with the starving. XD
Here is the official SotWK Éomer chibi (art commissioned from my friend @baek-art) as my weird little thank you. <3
Tumblr media
This is such incredibly generous praise that I almost hesitate to share it but a) I don’t want to deny anyone else a good look at the most adorable-est little Éomer that I’ve ever seen and b) I don’t want to miss my opportunity to publicly thank @sotwk , whose opinion I so truly value and who does SO much for the Tolkien tumblr community by both writing the most amazing stories and incredible HCs and also boosting and cheerleading others along the way. I would never have posted anything here in the first place without inspiration from her, and I know for a fact that’s true for others as well. So if anyone hasn’t been reading Taken (whaaat???) or enjoying the most intricate and compelling and intriguing backstories for the whole royal family of Mirkwood, then…you should fix that now!
In the meantime, I’ll still be here plugging away at my Rohan stuff and aspiring to be worthy of the kind words and thoughts above! ❤️❤️❤️

What tattoo do they have, where and what’s the significance if there is any? - The Hobbit Edition
These are head canons. I let my imagination run wild with this one. Hope you have fun reading it. At least as much as I had writing it ;). Warnings: Mentions of tattoos, weapons, death, swearing too and the usual: this franchise doesn't belong to me.
UNBETA'D: And I'll probably die on that hill.
TAGS: @heilith @sotwk @asgardianhobbit98 @middleearthpixie @glassgulls @evenstaredits @fizzyxcustard
Tumblr media
Note: Headcanon of mine: They have a common tattoo for the whole Company. It would probably be the symbol left on Bilbo's door the first time they all meet. Or an inside joke, at Bilbo's depend I'd wager.
Tumblr media
Bilbo: No. None whatsoever. It never interested him in the first place. (That's what he tells Frodo, but he has the one with the Company, although he did complain the whole time about it. Once finished and satisfied with what it looked like, did not seem to bother him so much. He has it somewhere private, where he would not be showing it on accident to anyone, but somewhere he can also see like his calf or above his heart.)
Tumblr media
Bifur (cousin to Bombur and Bofur): No one besides his kin knows, considering the axe in his head. I would feel a lot relating to battle and the history of his people. For the placement, arms, legs, some part of his torso, back, everywhere really. You have a needle some ink and a good design and he's in.
Tumblr media
Ori (brother to Nori and Dori): The youngest. One. In common with the company. Wants to have more but his brothers are holding him back. He's brave but a little bit daft so they prefer to be sure they all survive before doing any crazy things. (He tried to get one tattooed of a grape of raisin as a bet with Fili and Kili. They stopped him before he could even ask)
Tumblr media
Dori (brother to Ori and Nori): The oldest. He would never admit to it because he has some decorum, but he probably had a few made when he was drunk with his friends a long time ago. On unmentionable places (his left buttcheek for example) of unmentionable designs (wine bottles and/or naked ladies).
Tumblr media
Bombur (cousin of Bifur): Loads of them. Very intricate details, portraits of dwarf-women, drawings he made himself of trees and prairies, very bucolic.
Tumblr media
Gloin (Gimli's father): Not much. His wife's name when he was younger. She gave him grief for it but he never regretted it. A legendary axe along one of his thighs, the details are uncanny.
Tumblr media
Nori (brother of Dori and Ori) : A dragon. He would get a dragon before the fall of Erebor and keep it as a reminder afterwards. He adds tons of coins and jewellery. It’s a whole piece on his back. Impressive work.
Tumblr media
Oin: He is the tattoo artist, I feel. Old enough, some medical knowledge. Chances are he misinterpreted a few ones. He was taught in Erebor so he is not as steady as he used to, but he always manages to get someone's help everytime. He never lets anyone touch his tattoo stuff unless he is present. Himself has a harp and several instruments.
Tumblr media
Fili: He’d have one with his brother, mother and uncle for the Durin line. Maybe behind his ear. I can see a beautiful blade, down the length of his torso from his upper ribcage to his hips.
Tumblr media
Kili: Same for Fili. But he's a romantic so I'd say, on his inner arm or his wrist. He'd go for pieces of poetry, flowers and landscapes of mountains.
Tumblr media
Dwalin : Everywhere. A lot of geometric figures are arranged in patterns he only knows the reason for. Fili and Kili have a theory about an escape he lead with those tattoos. Dwalin never denies nor confirms it, he finds it immensly hilarious to see them try to figure it out.
Tumblr media
Bofur: Names of his lost ones. Pun jokes in drawings, different moustaches. If the chance comes, a portrait of his One on his lower back. Because he is a cheesy, cheesy dwarf.
Tumblr media
Balin: One in common with Thorin, that’s for sure. Something they've been through together. One for the company.
Tumblr media
Thorin: Words of poetry or song he’d adored as a younger dwarf, some symbolic ones like the one for the Durin line, and the one for the company. One of an animal, (I'm influenced by some drawings I saw though), something symbolic with a greater meaning. No decorative ones.
Tumblr media
Bard: I don't think it ever crossed his mind. He'd consider it as a branding of sorts and between his kids, hiding his lineage and the loss of his wife, he has enough issues as it is.
Tumblr media
Thranduil: Has enough scars for a lifetime. But if his lover has some he’d be fascinated. Honestly, repulsed at first because why would you scar your beautiful skin like this, but if they are his love, they have taste so the tattoo design would be one he quite enjoys too.

I just noticed your bio and saw “Thranduil’s legal wife” I love that. I always thought Aemond had Thrandaddy vibes. I obviously have a type lmao! Sometimes I like to think that in a crossover world, Thranduil could’ve been Aemond’s father. 🫢 Thoughts?
My thoughts in kinda-headcanon form:
Tumblr media
Thranduil as Aemond's Dad.
He wouldn't let anyone maim his son.
He would've been a better father than Viserys.
I firmly believe that Thranduil is the perfect father (explained better by @sotwk)
Aemond would be jolly and happy, because Thranduil would make sure that he wouldn't have to worry about anything because he is safe around his father. (something that Aemond isn't in the canon universe)
ALSO AEMOND WOULD HAVE BANGING HAIRSTYLES
Thranduil wouldn't cover his scars if Aem was his son.
SINGER!AEMOND
Little downside though - Thranduil would be besties with Vhagar. (Old ppl talking to each other) and Aemond would hate that.
I could see him and Legolas teasing each other 😭
Similarities Between Them
Blind in one eye
Amazing blonde hair
Attitude
Ego

My personal headcanon about why Galadriel ignores the issue with Dol Guldur for literally 2000 years inspired by this post @sotwk reblog commented on!
I've been writing a Thranduil fic for a while now (spoilers for yet unpublished chapters under the cut) and I'm hoping maybe this helps me get back into a writing mood? Idk
In my story, Thranduil's wife dies in Dol Guldur. They try to take it back from the orcs but they underestimate the enemy and she is killed. Galadriel and Celeborn are there too, Thranduil's wife was their daughter.
It is revealed that Galadriel always knew that if their daughter married Thranduil, she would die, but she did nothing to prevent it (but has a good reason for it) which causes Thranduil to completely cut ties with Galadriel. She is not welcome anymore in his forest. No one is.

So... this is a bit of an unusual, self-serving ask, but if you're at all interested in the idea, please go for it! XD
You know all those fanart drawings of child Legolas accidentally shooting Thranduil with an arrow? Well, in SotWK, Gelir is actually the one who teaches Legolas how to shoot. (And SotWK headcanon states Gelir is the greatest archer in the Woodland Realm. Like, he would have saved Helm's Deep from blowing up with his first shot. Bahaha.)
If you're in the mood, maybe a brother crack fic along those lines?
Thank you in advance, if you choose to go for it!
PS. Tauriel is Legolas's age in SotWK too, so you can throw child-her in there if you want.
Honestly @sotwk posting this with your oc's in it feels like going up to Tolkien and showing him my fanfic. ✨anyway✨
EDIT: forgot to mention, I've never tried to write in past tense, so thizs is EXTRA rocky 😅 sorry
Word count: 2968 (got a bit out if hand..)
Legolas let out a cry of joy before wrapping his mother in a hug that nearly knocked her off balance. "Thank you Ammë! Thank you thank you!"
Queen Maereth could do naught else but give her son a smile, for his grin was bright and cheerful as the sun above Greenwood's canopy. "You must always be on your best behavior, my Greenleaf, and the instant you are hurt the lessons will halt. Do you understand?"
His braid bobbed as he nodded his head. "Yes, of course!" Suddenly his face feel into a scowl. "And I have to find some way to convince Gelir to teach me, he is quite particular about how much time he spends with me."
"Gelir is particular about time spent with anyone, Legolas. He far prefer a the company of trees and woodland inhabitants to ourselves." The cool tones of the Elven king promoted a laugh from his beloved, a sound that never failed to bring joy to any around.
Legolas, however, was not amused. Throwing his hands up in the air he exclaimed, "Well that doesn't help me. I can hardly turn myself into a squirl or bird so he may teach me to shoot." A moment's pause, "besides, even if I could, it would be pointless. I could hardly draw a bow if I had paws or talons."
Though Legolas did not understand why his father laughed, he grinned all the same. He liked it when his father was happy. When his father was happy, Ammë was happy, and that usually meant everything was okay.
The young prince hopped to his feet from the spot on the floor to which he'd settled, and addressed his Royal parents in a lofty tone. "I would love to keep you both company, but I must be off. Plans do not shape themselves, and I will need a great one to convince Gelir." Gravely the young prince bowed before exiting the room, deap in thought.
It was a testament to the wills of both Thranduil and Maereth that their expressions remained stotic until Legolas had left.
In the end Legolas, having begged advice from all of his brothers, had landed on a simple plan to entice Gelir's good will; flattery and wide eyes.
Granted he landed on this plan after four failed attempts at others, including an incident with a candle and far to close an escape for the silver-blond of Gelir's lovely hair, had it been longer the escapade would have ended much differantly.
And so Legolas -much to the confusion of poor Gelir- doted upon him for near a week, before finally becomeing so antsy that he starts spending large amounts of time fliped on the grass. (Much to the displeasure of the maid tasked with scrubbing stains from the prince's tunic)
Throughout this period, Tauriel was merciless with both her teasing and no-nonsense advice. Having advised her friend to "just ask him" she set to annoying him into doing so.
Legolas did not appreciate this.
But yet not for nothing is Gelir still heralded as the greatest hunter of Greenwood The Great, and his eyes were sharp as the hawks whos company he kept.
Having become suspicious of his younger brother's attitude, he sharpened his focouse onto Legolas. Yet he found no fault nor prank that the wide eyed Mellon had played to promt his generous disposition.
When a week had passed, Gelir noted a significant change in Legolas' manner, gone was the constant bable and cheer.  And though he was lothe to say so, Gelir noted it's absence with sorrow.
Becoming worried, the fourth prince of the wood aproched his eldest brother with his concern- for although he cared deeply for Legolas, he did not wish to bring worry on Queen Mearath.
But Mirion was non-forthcoming, and told him only that Legolas was in perfect health, and his problem was somthing that only Gelir could help.
Resolving to confront his brother on the morrow, he retires to bed, troubled.
The next morning Legolas offered to serve him, as he had been for a time, and Gelir politly declined. Legolas mearly nodded with an air of resignation. After the meal Gelir pulls him to the side, "Legolas, brother, you have nor been yourself this past week, and I have been told that only I can help you, but I know not how."
Legolas fidgeted with his tunic hem before taking a gulp of air at looking up at hus brother, who had never seemed so tall before. "I..." He started, then spoke so quickly that Gelir could liken him to a squirl.
"Ammë said that since I've been doing so well with my lessons I could choose one weapon to start studying, and I really wantd to learn the bow, and everyone knows that you're the best bowman in the last eight-thousand years at least, but you dont like me very much so I tried to think of a plan to make you like me, except that didn't go very well and I nearly set your hair on fire, and Tauriel said I should just ask you, but it's easy for her to say things like that because everyone likes her and-"
"Cease youngling!"
Gelir's mind raced in the breath of silence that passed while Legolas looked down to his boots, an aura of defeat surounding him. Gelir tugged on the short braid behind his left ear, wishing -not for the first time- that he were better with people.
Animals were easy, they didn't stress him out so much as his fellow elves.
But now he was at a loss for what to do, and had to speak. Joy of joys.
As he was want, Gelir considered the situation from all angles, feeling a twinge of guilt that his brother had though he didn't like him. He thought over what Legolas had requested, and though he would never admit it, he felt a touch flattered that the youngest prince had chosen his weapon.
"Has mother suggested the bow for you Legolas?" He asked.
Said prince looked to him in shock. "No! I want to learn the bow, and you are the best." Sadly he looked to thw ground again. "Although, if you will not teach me, Ada says that one of the palace guards will. But they are not so skilled as you."
Gelir shook his head in wonderment, "I only asked, for our older brothers are more renowned for their battle prowess. Most would prefer their instruction come from those with more renowned weapons."
At this Legolas shot him a look that clearly conveyed how intelligent he found this remark. "That, is ridiculous. I think lady Gilith put it quite well when she was talking to her mellon: 'prince Gelir spends much time in the company of animals, indeed far more than with others of his own kind. But still he is quite brave -he must be to spend so much time alone in thise woods without protection- and is more skilled than the entirety of the guard! And quite attractive as well as elegant'."
Legolas said this all in a higher pitch than his usual tone, mocking the Elven lady. "Although," he resumed in his normal voice, "I don't think you're attractive. But they giggled for a while over your eyes. Tauriel says I'll understand someday, but I don't think I want to."
This tirade was rewarded with a laugh from Gelir, a beautiful sound, for he had inherited his mother's chime-like noise. "You chatter like a squirl, dear brother mine. Yes, I think I can clear I bit of time a day to instruct you. So long as you promise to stop being so quiet, waiting on me hand and foot. We get quite enough if that from the servants, no?"
Legolas may have heard the last sentance, but that is not likely. Already was he turning flips with shouts of excitement.
A smile subtle as a cats paw on stone was upon Gelir's face for the remainder of the day, much to the confusion -but pleasure- of his year mate, Darthol.
The next day dawned bright and crips, though not too soon for prince Legolas, who had arisen far before the sun had first peaked her golden glow through the treetops of Greenwood. (Although, it should be said that Ninniel, the prince's usual keeper, did not rise so early, as she had been given the day off to spend as she pleased.)
As soon as breakfast was served, Legolas was bouncing in anticipation, and though relived, Gelir did not think that any of the elves tasked with cleaning up after the meal would apriciate the table being fliped by an excited ellon, Prince or no.
"Legolas, why don't you invite lady Tauriel to come to your training today?"
Just like that, Legolas shit from his seat like the arrow he so wanted to fire, leaving his brothers chuckling in his wake.
When hours later (or so it seemed to the impatient elfling) they finally stood out on the shooting range, Legolas quivered with excitement, near combusting when Gelir handed him a small bow that fit perfectly in his hand.
"Tis the one I learned on, and still is in perfect condition." He said proudly. "And still more, it looks as if it were made for you! And you for it I should say, you're a bowself born little brother."
Legolas did not preen under the words, but only because Tauriel was watching, and ger earlier jab at him about acting like a peacock still stung. Instead he said, "Thank you for trusting me with it Gelir!"
Gelir shifted on his feet, "Right then, first thing I'll teach you is stance, but before that we must go over bow etiquette."
And so did he instruct the attentive blond, and by that did Tauriel benefit as well. Both learned how to store a bow, how properly to carry one, be it over long distantce or mearly a short journy. Also they were taught never to draw a bow without an arrow, Legolas' eyes widening when told that the beautiful weapon would shatter if mishandled.
When the oral instruction was completed, Gelir began showing Legolas the apropriate way to stand. "The stance is important to learn first, if you cannot line your body up for the shot, how can your arriw lone up with your target?"
At this legolas was confused. "But Gelir," he said from his position sideways to the target. "You don't always stand like this, ive watched you shoot for so many other angles, even upside down like a bat!"
Gelir inclines his head, accepting this. "Yes, Legolas, I do. But that is only bevause I spent many years shooting from the base stance, my body is trained to line up automatically for a shot, but only because of practice in a perfect stance."
Subdued, Legolas nodds. But then his eyes catch sight of Darthol comeing from the woods behind the targets. "Gelir, I think he needs you."
The elder makes a noise of recognition, "Yes I suppose so, Alherion is still ill, I fear he may have gotten worse."
"Oh dear!" Exclaimed Legolas. "Then you must talk to him, Alherion must not be in more pain than we can help." Gelir jerked his head in thanks, and telling both elves to stay, he ran to meet his friend halfway.
After a moment of silence Tauriel spoke. "Are you enjoying learning Legolas?"
He whiped his head in an agreeing motion. "Oh yes! And don't look at me so Tauriel, I enjoy learning when the subject is more interesting."
With a smile Tauriel consieds his point. "Your stance is already near mirrored to prince Gelir, though you musn't be upset when you aim is not perfect at first" she said sagely, "when I had my fist dagger lesson, I couldn't even get the grip right!"
This was altogether to patronizing for Legolas, who'd been evious of Tauriel's early weapon instruction for night on a year, and so a scowl covered his features. "Well that is because you are allthogether a silly Elleth, and my aim is true! I hit a attacking wolf with a stone!"
Insulted by the comment, Tauriel raised an eyebrow. "Didn't it turn out that the Wolf was a friend of his? Thats hardly an impressive feat. You couldn't hit the target is you tried."
"I could so!"
"Hmm, no. I dont think so"
"Well you think wrong then!"
Temper flared Tauriel lashed out, "then do it. I dare you, shoot the target! Then you'll see!"
Suddenly Legolas looked tentive, and not so confidant as he had previously been. "But Gelir said-"
"Hah! You scared."
This was too much for Legolas, and with a huff he takes up the proper position, snatches the arrow, and puts it to the string. It is at this point that he realized that Gelir had not got this far in his instruction, and Legolas was unsure of how properly to follow through.
But silly Tauriel was still watching, so he drew the string back (arrow on the entierly wrong side of the bow) and the arrow swung away from the front of bow. Suprised and startled by Tauriel's laugh, Legolas realised the string and the arrow flew far off target...
And into his brothers leg.
Gelir's knees buckled unded the shock of the pain, and he fell to the ground. Darthol jumped but was imeadiatly at at his yearmates side. Taking in the arrow, his eyes shot to the two young elves, both pale as sheets, though Tauriel looked worse with her crimson hair accenting the lack of blood in her face.
It did not take more than a second to understand what had happened, and Darthol launched into action. "Gelir, I'm going to pick you up, please try not to shout in my ear"
Lip between his teeth, the prince nods in understanding. A hissing sound so close to that of the snakes he was fond of escaped his mouth when he was lifted from the ground.
Darthol barks for Legolas and Tauriel to accompany him, and they both nearly tripped in their haste to comply.
The trip back to the palace was made in silence, Darthol's attention held soley by the task of holding his friend and not jarring the calf with the arrow stuck in it. The two young elves were to frightened to say anything.
The pandemonium that unsued when they reach the gates with a bloody price could be described as comical, but at when they made it to the halls of healing, everything became crisp and efficient.
Not long was the wait before Queen Maereth apeared, dress flowing behind her as she strode swiftly into the hall, walking past both Legolas and Tauriel without a word.
The ten minuets of waiting for his mother to reappear were the longest of Legolas' objectivly short life at that point, and he was in tears within the first five.
Tauriel took no notice, and would nit have teased him if she had. She was in shock, the only sound escaping her was a whispered "I've killed the prince."
Maereth closed the door behind her when she came out, leaving Darthol and the healers with Gelir. When her attention was drawn to the two children her facial expression softened.
Legolas had drawn his knees to his face as he sat huddled on the bench and his shoulders shook with quiet sobs. Maereth had raised enough sons to know that Legolas had been punished already for his follyand so she set to comforting him instead, as well as Tauriel, whom she'd taken under her wing as soon as the orphened child had been delivered to the kingdom.
She drew both into her arms, whispering words of comfort to poor Legolas who said noting but 'I'm so sorry' repeatedly.
When they were calmed, Maereth drew forth the story fighting a smile when Tauriel asked if the prince would live.
"Yes dear, Gelir's calf was only injured, and the arrow did not sink verry far. He will be entirely heald before the week is out." Tauriel wrapped her arms around the Queens neck, apologizing profusely.
Seeing how shaken the girl was, Maereth semr her to the kitchens to beg a cup of calming tea.
When Tauriel was gone, she turned her attention back to Legolas, "why still do you cry my son?"
Focousing his red rimmed eyes on his mother, he choked out; "Because now Gelir will hate me. He already did not like me and now I've shot him!" It took much time for her to console Legolas, and later when she reflected on this moment, she would shake her head a smile on her face.
As promised Gelir, a mear four days later, was creeping through the woods as silently and confidently as ever. And Legolas' instruction continued, the two youngest elves both having learned a lesson. For Legolas, he learned patience and the importance of following instruction, even when dared otherwise.
Tauriel, still had a fiery temper to match her locks, however she began seeking ways to better control it, and sought to be less crule in teasing Legolas.
Gelir, for his part, was reminded not to stand in the middle of a shooting range.
~
Many, many years later an orc falls dead, torch sputtering out in the water. Three arrows stick out of its corpse, two with green fletchs and one, sticking from its neck, with red.
From across the battle field, the red arrows owner calls, "Why did you not shoot his leg? Legolas?"
With an expression of long suffering, the still youngest elf prince sings an insult in his mother tounge to his brother, that causes Aragorn's eyebrows to shoot up.

The Regencies of the Princes of the Woodland Realm
Tumblr media
Original Map credit to The Encyclopedia of Arda. Edits by @sotwk.
King Thranduil Establishes the Rule of Princes
Thranduil's ascension faced opposition by a handful of powerful Sinda nobles (Oropher's councilors), who schemed to usurp the throne. They sought to turn the Silvans against Thranduil by disparaging his wife, Maereth, as a daughter of Noldor kinslayers. Fortunately, the people's love for Thranduil prevailed, and they embraced Princess Maereth as their Queen. She was eventually crowned almost a century after her husband took the throne.
Some years after the birth of their fifth and last son Legolas, Thranduil passed a royal decree called the "Thain-na-Conin" or "Rule of Princes", which modified the kingdom's feudal system of governance.
This law bestowed governing power on each one of Thranduil's children, granting them lordship over key provinces in the realm. Upon reaching the age of 250, the princes assumed responsibility for the protection and welfare of the citizens dwelling within their assigned lands or "regencies", while still answering to the sovereign authority of their father and King.
This was done not to increase the royal family's power, but to protect the common folk from negligence or abuses of their ruling lords. As the population grew rapidly and hundreds of new communities sprouted all over the vast Greenwood, Thranduil wanted to ensure that all Silvans received the same amount of care and attention from the Crown, no matter how remote their location.

Political Timeline of the Woodland Realm:
SECOND AGE
SA 2054 - King Oropher moves his household out of Amon Lanc and migrates northward, setting up a new domain and capital in the western glens of Emyn Duir.
SA 2022 - Prince Thranduil commences the construction of a new palace separate from his father's, which he intends to make the home of his family. (Despite Maereth rejecting his marriage proposal.) This causes great strife between him and his father, because Thranduil declares he will not pursue anyone else but Maereth for his wife.
SA 2107 - Thranduil's palace is completed and he begins to assemble his household. The palace is named Bar Lasgalen, and is the grandest structure to ever be raised in Greenwood's history.
SA 2110 - Maereth visits Bar Lasgalen for the first time. Thranduil proposes again, but once more she turns him down.
SA 3142 - Thranduil and Oropher reconcile. Oropher finally grants his blessing for Thranduil to marry Maereth.
SA 3262 - Thranduil and Maereth are betrothed at the celebration of the Mereth Nuin Giliath in Greenwood.
SA 3265 -  Thranduil weds Maereth and she comes to live at Bar Lasgalen.
SA 3430 - Crown Prince Mirion is born. After himself being persuaded by Maereth, Thranduil convinces his father to join The Last Alliance of Elves and Men.
SA 3434 - Oropher is slain at the Siege of Barad-dûr.
SA 3441 - The war ends. Thranduil’s reign as Woodland King begins, and Bar Lasgalen becomes the realm's new capital.
Tumblr media
THIRD AGE
TA 37 - Turhir is born.
TA 88 - Maereth is crowned Queen of the Woodland Realm.
TA 89 - Arvellas is born.
TA 221 - Gelir is born.
TA 242 - Legolas is born.
TA 250 - Thranduil passes the "Rule of Princes".
TA 252 - Mirion assumes his regency over Bar Himlaeg (his late grandfather's domicile) and the communities of Emyn Duir.
TA 278 - Mirion marries Itarildë. The Crown Prince's controversial marriage to another "outsider" instead of a Silvan stirs up discontent among Thranduil's political opponents once more.
TA 287 - Turhir assumes his regency over the newly established city of Thangail.
TA 307 - Lord Councilor Silevion is exposed as the leader of a coup attempt against the royal family. He is deposed and stripped of his titles, and exiled from the Woodland Realm.
TA 339 - Arvellas assumes his regency over Cemamath, taking over Silevion's lands.
TA 471 - Gelir assumes his regency over Dant-en-Aras.
TA 492 - Legolas assumes his regency over Galadal.

The Regencies of the Thranduilions
King Oropher's departure from Amon Lanc initiated the gradual migration of the Silvan Elves from the southern parts of Greenwood to the northern half of the great forest. By the start of Thranduil's rule, more than half of the realm's population resided above the Old Forest Road. However, the southern parts of the realm experienced a period of reinvigoration in the early Third Age due to the successful regencies of Prince Gelir and Prince Legolas.
The Woodland Realm enjoyed its most prosperous years between TA 500-1000, with the Thranduilions all working to further their parents' vision for a strong, united kingdom. The five regencies of the princes are:
BAR HIMLAEG, ruled by Crown Prince Mirion. A center for healing (esp. herbal medicine), the best source of Elvish medicine east of the Misty Mountains.
THANGAIL, ruled by Prince Turhir. Main base and training facility of the realm's military forces.
CEMAMATH, ruled by Prince Arvellas. Center of trade and commerce with the Dwarves and Men in the east.
DANT-EN-ARAS, ruled by Prince Gelir. Outpost and headquarters of the realm's best hunters and scouts.
GALADAL, ruled by Prince Legolas. Home of the largest concentration of farmers, who worked the fertile plains and maintained herds in the lands east of the forest borders. (Note: the Bight shown on the map did not exist until TA 1200, after Thranduil's people already left the southern forests.)
Unfortunately, in TA 1050, the Necromancer (Sauron) captured Amon Lanc, and began to poison the southern woods, with toxins and monsters that caused deaths at an alarming rate. Despite Thranduil and his family's valiant efforts to combat the Darkness, it continued to spread northward over the course of several centuries. Finally, the Elvenking made the difficult decision to prioritize the safety of his people and abandon the lands south of the Emyn Duir. He led his people north-east and reestablished their smaller kingdom in the underground halls.
The strength and prosperity of the Woodland Realm was one of the reasons Sauron chose it as a target for his corruptive influence. He both feared and envied the power of Thranduil and his family and wanted to destroy it, if not deceive or force it into his service.
Up until their last breaths (literally, for some of them), the Princes continued to fight for the defense of their beloved homeland until Dol Guldur was finally cast down at the end of the War of the Ring.

We hardly know anything about Nori and Dori, but since you enjoy drawing them, I was wondering if you have any headcanons that flesh out their personalities, skills, or likes and dislikes? 😊
Tumblr media
What did you ask meeeeeeee!! Thanks to heart @sotwk for asking me to talk about them and how I imagine them, I have a whole huge headcanon in my head about them that I have extensively described in my fics that I can talk about them for days, but here I will write only the essentials!!!
-Nori- Let's start with Nori, my lovely Nori ❤
In my fanfiction "An unlikely friendship, an impossible love" I imagined how dwarf society was structured in the Blue Mountains and how they lived before starting the Quest for Erebor. In this context (which I won't explain here because otherwise too long, but if anyone wants to know more my askbox is always open 👀) Nori fits like a sour note! Nori is a thief who robs fools and drunks, he is very good at what he does and is known and feared in his environment. I like to think of Nori as an unbalanced character, in the sense that he is really skilled as a thief and as a con man but really incapable in social relationships as he hasn't developed any due to his lifestyle, in fact he is very awkward in establishing a relationship even only of friendship with Bofur. In the fic I explain how Nori chose to become a thief to help his brothers find honest work in order to live and then, when he could leave and devote himself to honest work, Nori had difficulty doing it because he was too addicted to the infamous life. I imagine Nori as a person who is extremely aware of his abilities and very arrogant, but also very insecure inside about what he doesn't know and afraid of showing weaknesses to others. Also, he has a good soul and is very kind to the people he cares about, but he can experience very intense feelings such as strong jealousies or great anger. He is a sanguine person who however managed to hide everything behind a mask of cold rationality in order to survive in the harsh world of the street!!
In a beautiful project that I haven't delved into anything yet (I hope sooner or later this project will be born because it's really beautiful), modern AU, Nori is a character who uses a mask of arrogance and confidence to hide a deep suffering and fear caused by the his criminal lifestyle, bringing with him the pain of having lived a very difficult childhood.
-Dori- Instead, I have deepened the character of Dori in two different fics. In the fanfiction "An unlikely friendship, an impossible love", Dori is the older brother who constantly argues with Nori and does not trust him because he is disappointed in his choices, he suffers because he blames himself for the choices made by his brother and tries in every way to protect Ori for fear that he will fail in his role as brother major again. But the best characterization that I have given to Dori is found in the fanficition "A bad temper". Here I imagine Dori as a dwarf with an extremely difficult character, he's whiny, picky, always in a bad mood and serious, he's not really good company. But in reality, it turns out that he's so strict because he feels a deep duty to look after and protect his siblings and he's based his life on that. Because of this, pleasure does not exist for him, only duty exists! But thanks to Balin, Dori slowly begins to melt away and we discover that in reality Dori is a dwarf with very strong maternal feelings, a very delicate dwarf who is easily injured and that is why he has raised an armor around him.
In the project I mentioned above, Dori is an older brother who lived his adolescence badly in a family where in fact he was the point of reference despite his age and who tried to deal with the whole situation with violence, to then mature into a refined and educated adult who likes beautiful things and who is deeply ashamed of his past.
Thank you so much for allowing me to talk about them and how i image them because I really love them and I imagined a lot of headcanon about them!!!

Middle-earth Asks!
✨ evenstar: Who is your favourite middle earth couple?
🏹 and my bow: what is your favourite legolas moment?
Thanks for the ask @sotwk!!
✨ evenstar: Who is your favourite middle earth couple? OOH it's just got to be Éowyn and Faramir. After all they've endured they learn to heal together and their hair streamed out mingling in the air and the shadow departed!! They're just so thematically perfect together. I also have headcanons for Éomer and Lothíriel despite the fact that I agree Éomer probably shouldn't also have ended up with a Gondor nobility type.
🏹 and my bow: what is your favourite legolas moment? In The Two Towers book when the three hunters are on their orc-chasing marathon and Legolas just. Doesn't sleep. He quietly sings to himself and paces and also stands ominously above Aragorn and Gimli and I love how thoroughly weird Tolkien made him. He's just a comedically bizarre guy and I wish the movies included a bit of that.

Hello new friend!
The funny thing about my SotWK AU is, I have literally ZERO headcanons about Oropher's father or his childhood. So if you ever write out your headcanons about your OC and his relationship with his son Oropher, please tag me! I would love to read any character info sheets/bios you make for your OC Orothon as well.
Only if you're comfortable doing so! I promise I'm not going to steal/copy any of your creative works; I just have never thought much about Oropher's background history, and I would love to see what ideas other writers have come up with.
I will definitely be writing more on him soon, since I love the idea of seeing more of the grandfather of the elven king qnd how life was back then in doriath.
I don't mind tagging you at all. ☺️💕✨
