I just discovered the ultimate hand drawing technique during class today. I call it, the FOOT METHOD observe,
So first we draw the sole of a foot like this:
Tumblr media
Than we add three circles (like toes)
Tumblr media
Now we add a "flap"
Tumblr media
And a little oval
Tumblr media
And the thumb
Tumblr media
the rest of the fingers:
Tumblr media
the best part of this technique is that it works almost always, like so
Tumblr media
Now I'm leaving a more in depth explanation for this under the cut
alright so the hand is actually two separate pieces, the palm and the thumb.
The palm is kind of foot shaped and the thumb is a triangle
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I figured it would be easier to draw if I were to simplify it into two shapes instead of one it'd be easier to foreshorten.
And I was right!
The "foot" doesn't really move at all so if you want to foreshorten it all you got to do is change the size depending on the pose.
Where as the "flap" often changes completely, but at it's core it's mostly triangle shaped, So keep that in mind.
If you're doing a side view, then if we're looking at it from the thumb side it's usually a triangle and if we're looking at it from the pinky it's usually a rectangle.
Fingers are a whole other ordeal, but the main thing I noticed is that they start out thick, are thinnest in the middle and thick at the tip.
Thumbs are two joints connected to the "flap" opposed to the three joints of the rest of the fingers.
Aaand that all I got! I hope this helps somebody :D

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a while, I noticed that in the last lesson on skin, I did not touch on everything I would like to talk about. My inner perfect did not give me peace. Now I have completed everything and am sharing it with you.
Be sure to keep it so as not to lose it.
Write in the comments what other tutorials you would like.

I want to tell a story to the artists and would-be artists out there.
When I was 19, I made a large oil painting of the nerd I would eventually marry. I poured all my attention and care into this painting. It's the only art I have from back then that still holds up as a work I'm proud of today.
I entered it into a judged show at the local art center. It got an honorable mention. I went to see the show with my beloved model. One of the judges came up to talk to me, and highlighted that all the judges really liked the painting. It would have placed, except, you see, the feet were incorrect. They were too wide and short, and if I just studied a bit more anatomy-
I called over my future wife, and asked her to take off her shoe. Being already very used to humoring me, she did. The judge looked at her very short, very wide little foot. Exactly as I'd lovingly rendered it. I would never edit her appearance in any way.
The judge looked me in the eye, and to his credit, he really looked like he meant it when he said "Oh I'm so sorry."
Anyways the moral of the story is that all of those anatomy books that teach you proportions are either showing you averages, or a very specific idea of an idealized body. Actual bodies are much more varied than that.
So don't forget to draw from observation, and remember that humans aren't mass produced mannequins. Delight in our variation. Because it's supposed to be there.

[ID in alt]
Tutorial on drawing characters/OCs who have some sort of facial paralysis. It doesn't cover all possible variants because I was using mirror as my main reference lawl
Keep in mind that this is an introductory drawing tutorial and has some generalizations in it, so not every “X is Z” statement will be true for Actual People 👍
Consider supporting me on ko-fi if you find this to be helpful.

my recipe for drawing hands!
(small note that this is a shortcut that is more abt style and ease than anatomical accuracy. it helps to take time to really properly study hands, makes it easier to bend the rules a bit like this and have it still look good!!)
(learn rules b4 u break them or whatevah)

ive been wanting to make smth like this for a little while now and i finally finished it up ^_^ hopefully my tricks are helpful
EDITS: since this post is gaining a lot of traction, i want to highlight some of the suggestions and addendums that other people have made. i'm imperfect, which is why i recommend that you use references of real people along with my simple tips!
as many have pointed out, the yellow in the last diagram should cover the entire body, especially around the stomach area. the only parts of the body that are consistently bare are the palms of the hands and the bottoms of the feet
check out this reblog from @proxykiwi for a diagram of the distribution of hair on the back of the body
the texture of the hair can differ between the head and the body-- much of the time body and beard hair is curlier than the hair on the head
like when drawing head hair, its helpful to break up facial hair into descriptive shapes, and add lines for texture as needed. i tried to communicate that in the images, but i think its also useful to write it out
check out this reblog from @jodjuya for a detailed explanation of how beards tend to grow throughout teen-adult years
thank you to everyone who's suggested and added things! i encourage people to look through the replies and reblogs of this post for more information

Hello, friends!
I reworked the ol' "Schweizer Guide to Spotting Tangents" lecture from my comics-teaching days, figured I'd share it here. If you want a free, printable PDF for yourself or to share (especially if you're an educator), you can find it at the bottom of this same lesson on my website.
