On Guy Fawkes night of 2022 I was one of the first people to be invited to a harringrove discord server belonging to someone I believed to be a close friend.

This decision led to six months of a group of five people, some more than others, targeting me relentlessly, seemingly just for existing.

I was bullied because I was disabled, because I was trans, because my abuse didn’t “fit in” with their perceptions of what abuse looked like, because I was poor.

Even after I was kicked one day, with no explanation and blocked by both mods, my page continued to be stalked for three months afterwards while my mental health deteriorated significantly and visibly, even through my posts.

When they were finally cornered in the act, the excuses they gave were as weak as citing my politics (I was a bit too left for their tastes) and some was covert antisemitism.

I was never offered an official apology.

Then they went away for a while. Some of them deactivated, some crawled off into the shadows.

But then I heard about a new discord server. One which I never joined but I understood that the ringleader of the group who had tormented me for MONTHS was in. And my close friend was in this server, this person hadn’t changed. Apparently, this person is also selling their harassment of me as a “misunderstanding.”

I cannot mince my words here. This person is in a group of bullies, some of whom I understand were also on that server. Not all of them may have actively participated in the bullying but didn’t exactly do their damndest to stop it. And I know they saw it. They just don’t care. The exact participants of said bullying have changed since my experience over a year ago but the sentiment remains the same.

I don’t want to give any additional stress to any of their other victims so I won’t be naming any names. These people know who they are.

I hope everyone else who were affected by them and their actions are ok.

Chrissy's death serving as Eddie's motive.

Making Karen a child predator (they could've had a scene where Billy apologizes to Lucas, but instead they chose that... hm.)

Making Billy look like he was the "big bad predator" during the pool scene, even though he was the victim and not Karen.

Giving El a boyfriend before she learns about what she likes and doesn't like.

Framing Billy to be worse than the actual villains.

Having Nancy date Jonathan even though he took pictures of her without her consent.

Steve lying to Billy about where Max was.

Having Argyle be the "tracker" while Jonathan, Mike, and Will look at a map.

Patrick's death scene. The camera kept panning to Eddie and Jason instead of staying focused on Patrick. He didn't even get a flashback.

Their inability to write female friendships without including a fight over a boy.

Traumatizing El over and over again.

Killing Barb and Heather.

Choosing which characters for the audience to support, which they do by framing certain characters as bad in order to make other characters look better.

Inconsistencies with their characterization.

Adding new characters just to kill them off and avoid killing any of the main characters.

Reducing characters to stereotypes.

Jesus tap dancing Christ, just read someone in the tags of a shitty anti-Billy post saying that Max would celebrate July 4th as the happy day she got rid of Billy.

Like, mate, did we watch the same show? Did we watch the same scene? Did we hear Max read the same letter to her brother? Did we have to contend with the same musical choice about making a deal with God and so much hate for the ones we love and switching places and not really wanting to hurt each other but still doing it?

Did anything of what happen to Max in season 4 even enter your empty skull, just to twirl around the pneumatic vacuum in a sad dance, and exit from the same hole it entered, leaving nothing behind?!

I’ve not been active as much lately - personal stuff, work stress, my brain just taking a fucking nosedive - and then I come back and there’s fucking fatphobia and dickhead anons in people’s inboxes?!

Honestly, I feel like this is just the latest manifestation of the misogyny that’s sometimes rampant in this fandom, which often comes wrapped up with a nice little side of ageism and - dare I say it - a dash of racism. (Your friendly resident historian reminding you that fatphobia is intrinsically linked to white supremacy and racism. Please see the story of Sara Baartman as the most famous example thereof.)

I write my F!Reader fics with as minimal body description as possible not just to be inclusive in terms of race but also bodies. Imagine the Reader in whatever body you so wish.

In the case of my OFC, Lydia, in Visiting: while there’s few references to her appearance she’s explicitly someone with weight she wishes she didn’t have, stretch marks, the lot. And Ben isn’t in love with her because he “sees past her flaws” or “sees her inner beauty” or “sees her pretty face” or whatever fucking bullshit anyone remotely curvy has been fed in popular culture and their lives. He’s in love with her and he finds her impossibly sexy, full stop. As she is. As she will be. (Because bodies change, as his has done.)

Obviously it’s great to see the outpouring of anger about these idiot anons (seriously: go fuck yourselves) and that more people are going to write for more diverse bodies and readers.

But I want to just ask very nicely that we avoid “plus size reader” or “real body” just becoming a trope in fic, rather than actual, nuanced, representation.

Elowmojo uses AI and 3D presets for their "art." I wouldn't support that.

They don't use AI they're using Cyberpunk 2077 game and model him from there. Their work as tagged as virtual photography. That's an art form in my eyes. People do this and it's very valid and very different than AI. And they have been sharing this art before the AI trend. Their concepts and models are definitely an art form itself.

If you think you're any better maybe you try and make a Billy and I'll decide than.

It's interesting that whenever this fandom goes "he would call you slurs" or just bringing up slurs in general they mention Billy, a character who not only never actually used any but got called one.

Really interesting.

They neglect to mention the characters who actually have used slurs, ya know, like Hopper or Steve.

They also seem to conveniently forgotten about Neil, who called his son a f*gg*t and slapped him.

Oh and how could I forget... they call Billy fans slurs.

God, I am so appalled by what I have been hearing lately. I am part of a Billy Hargrove fan community and people have been describing the verbal abuse they have been receiving on this site. So I have decided to state my views on the matter.

Billy Hargrove did do terrible things. He is also a abuse victim and a minor (for a majority of the series)! Claiming he should have been killed by Steve or a different awful fate because he deserved it, is a awful mentality and blames victims. It is ableist too as Billy is canonically disabled (Bpd). Yes, Billy had his faults and things he needed to be redeemed for. But he never deserved to die or be further abused for it.

Karen Wheeler was a pedo. So were all her pool friends. Billy was a minor and they were attempting to get sex out of him. They also bullied another minor (Heather) simply because she was on before Billy. She limited their behaviour. They are not good people or icons. They are literal pedos.

If you Stan Vecna/Henry but hate Billy. Why is that? Vecna is a grown adult (yes abuse survivor but still a adult). He literally killed people and went on to manipulate and abuse others continually. Including Billy. Billy did wrong and he did not treat Max or the party as he should have. He was not a murderer who attempted literal genocide. But he was a minor who was in constant presence of his abuser, living with a invisible disability which he couldn’t manage.

Most importantly you do not attack and bully people simply for liking a character. You do not know what that person has experienced. You do not know what that person feels. I think people forget that on the internet. I won’t comment on your views if I don’t hold the same ones and you shouldn’t on mine.
